AT the fall meeting of the Iron and Steel Division, Oct. 4, 1934, in New York, a symposium was held on Slag Control in the Making of Iron and Steel. The chairman was J. H. Nead and the vice chairman, G. B. Waterhouse. The latter presided at both morning and afternoon sessions. An accurate value of formation water resistivity R, is essential in calculating formation porosity and fluid saturation from electrical well logs. In the cases where R, has not been measured directly, it must be obtained from other data, e.g., the SP curve. This paper deals with another approach: how to calculate R, from the chemical analysis of the formation water. INTRODUCTION It is known that the resistivity of aqueous solutions of pure salts depends on their concentration and on the temperature; the concentrations are given in MPL (mg of solute per liter of solution), or sometimes in ppm (mg of solute per kg of solution): MPL = ppm X specific gravity. Values for different pure salts are available in the literature, but not for solutions of mixtures which are of practical interest. The major component of the dissolved material in almost all formation waters being sodium chloride, it is customary to express the resistivity of formation waters in terms of equivalent sodium chloride concentration, i.e., the concentration of a solution of pure NaCl which has the same resistivity at a given temperature as that of the formation water under consideration. Thus, the problem of calculating R, from the chemical anaylsis can also be stated as how to convert the other constituents of the solute into equivalent NaCl concentration. Salts dissolved in water are at least partly dissociated into ions, and do not conserve their identity. If known amounts of several salts are dissolved in water, the solution does not necessarily contain the same salts in the original proportion, but perhaps some other combination of the ions, along with free ions in solution. This is why the chemical analysis of formation waters is often given in terms of ions, as if all dissolved salts were completely dissociated. Our problem then boils down to how to convert the concentrations of the various ions to equivalent concentrations of Na' and C1-. Dunlap and Hawthorne' have proposed to convert the concentration of all other ions to equivalent Na' and C1-concentrations by means of constant multipliers; e.g., 0.95 for Ca"; 2.0 for Mg"; 0.27 for HCO 3-; 0.5 for SO, -, etc. Their factors were based on measurements made at 68F on 26 formation water samples from the Texas Gulf Coast, ranging in concentration from 1,500 to 75,000 ppm. The Dunlap method is widely used in electric log interpretation, and is often extrapolated beyond its original concentration range. A comparison of R, values calculated by this method and values actually measured on formation water samples has shown large discrepancies, especially at higher concentrations. Therefore, two new methods were developed at Sinclair Oil Corp.'s Tulsa Research Center to calculate equivalent sodium chloride concentration from the chemical analysis of formation water samples. FUNDAMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS The resistivity of a solution, or its reciprocal the conductivity, at a given temperature is determined by the charge, concentration and mobility of the ions actually present. Monovalent ions such as Na' or C1- always carry the same charge. Compounds of polyvalent ions, however. may show incomplete dissociation, e.g., NaSO; + Na' instead of SO,-- + 2Na'. This happens especially in more concentrated solutions. Only very dilute solutions are completely dissociated, as assumed in the chemical analysis report. At higher concentration, the degree of dissociation depends not only on the nature and concentration of the particular salt under consideration but also on the nature and concentrations of the other solutes. Mobility of the ions depends on the viscosity of the solution. It also depends on the degree of hydration of the ions, which in turn is a function of the nature and the charge of the ions and also of the amount of free water available per ion, i.e., the total ionic concentration. The net effect is that the conductivity increases slower than proportional to the concentration, even if a solution contains only one salt such as NaC1, and is different for different salts (Fig. 1). Conductivity can even decline with a further increase in concentration, e.g., if additional salt is little dissociated but ties up some of the free water and/or causes an increase in viscosity. In solutions containing more than one salt, the contribution of one salt to the total conductivity depends not only on the fractional concentration of this same salt, but also on the concentration of all other solutes. A perfect method would give the conductivity or resistivity of a solution as a function of the concentrations of all solutes present. This is so complicated as to be impractical, and a simpler method must be found which is of acceptable accuracy. SOMETIMES the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers appears to be a strictly technical society, and if so my paper should deal with the technical operations of finding and producing gold. But I have not been engaged in practical gold mining since 1910. What I have been doing mainly for the last 25 years is to try to figure out what the income of a mine-gold, or any other-would be worth to an investor. So I have been in contact with gold mining, in one way or another, for some 42 years. I say that with a purpose. In that time the industry has been through one of its cycles. The value of gold mines is very dif¬ferent at different points in one of these cycles. For this reason the cycle of gold mining is a highly practical study. The cycle of gold is a more or less rhythmical change in its value or purchasing power measured in the grand average of other commodities, which is the same thing as its price. Taking the price of gold in 1897 as a stand¬ard, a dollar at that time declined to 55c. in 1913, to 26.8c. in 1920, and since then it has risen to 47.4c. in 1930 and to about 64c. in 1932. It is worth about 21/ times as much now as it was in 1920, but less than two¬thirds as much as in 1897. When this change is applied to the value of a gold mine still greater differences are evident. The cost of producing gold is of course measured in labor and other commodities, and as that cost goes down the margin of profit measured in the gold itself increases. Thus a mine which might make only 10 per cent profit in 1920 on its gross output may easily make 25 per cent now. The stockholder gets 2 ½ times more gold that is worth 2 1/2 times as much in purchasing power, therefore the real value of his holding has risen by the one factor multiplied by the other, giving him 61/4 times as much goods or services as he had in 1920.

Electron microscopical studies were made of the effect of sensitization at 1200oF on a Type-.104 stainless steel with high carbon and low nitrogen and oxygen contents, after solution annealing and after cold working. The loci of the carbide precipitates in the early stages of sensitization were followed in dry stripped plastic replicas. Some observations were made by direct electron transmission on thinned films. Intragranular dislocations showed a high degree of stability through the annealing necessary to produce sensitization. I HE present work was undertaken to determine the effect of sensitization, at 1200°F, for 1/2 hr, on the electron microstructure of a Type-304 stainless steel with high carbon, and low nitrogen and oxygen contents, after solution annealing and after cold working. Many electron microscopical studies of sensitization of 18-8 stainless steels have already been made. Most of them utilized extraction replicas, from which the morphology and composition of the precipitated carbides could be established.'-" ry stripped replicas were seldom used for such studies, although it was demonstrated that they are applicable, in general, to EurveYs of the general microstructure of many alloys' and, in particular, to the observation of precipitated carbides in austenitic stainless steels.3

The New ldria Mining District is in the southern part of the Diablo mountains of the California Coast Range, 140 miles southeast of San Francisco. The district, noted primarily for quicksilver, also has become important recently as a producer of short-fiber chrysotile asbestos. Between 1853 and 1966, the New Idria district produced 568,092 flasks of quicksilver valued at about $55,600,000, 99 per cent of which was recovered from one deposit, the New Idria mine. In 1944, the district was ranked third in all-time production of North American quicksilver districts, and, since that time, the New Idria mine produced an additional 129,045 flasks, placing the district and the New Idria mine second in all-time production. The major structure of the region is the northwest-trending Coalinga anticline consisting of an asymmetric dome of sedimentary beds ranging in age from Jurassic to Quaternary and marked at its northwest end by an oval body of sheared serpentine 14 miles long by 4 miles wide. The serpentine core, rimmed by Franciscan sandstone of probable Jurassic age, was uplifted in stages between Jurassic and Quaternary time and was intruded along a ring of faults into beds of the Panoche Formation of upper Cretaceous age. The core of serpentine and Franciscan rocks is the locus of about 20 quicksilver mines that rim the faultbounded core and lie within the serpentine mass. The host rock of the most productive deposits is altered Panoche shale and sandstone that lies intermittently along the perimeter of the core. Deposits of the New Idria group of mines and those of a few other small mines lie along the northeast contact in the footwall of the New ldria thrust fault, and a few others occur on steep normal faults around the south and southwest. The chief ore mineral in all quicksilver mines is cinnabar, but minor amounts of metacinnabar and native mercury are found in some of the mines. Ore shoots were deposited in fracture zones and stockworks in altered Panoche shale and sandstone and in definite fissure veins in Franciscan sandstone. Rocks made highly amenable to fracturing by hydrothermal alteration were fractured extensively by late faults. The resulting fracture zones, located along the late faults and at changes in strike or dip of the hanging wall or footwall, are the principal controls of most ore shoots. The largest and richest ore shoots are those of the New Idria mine. The major ore bodies occur in fractured shale and sandstone beneath the New ldria thrust fault at its junction with major tear faults.

B RITISH COLUMBIA in its mining activities is going ahead by leaps and bounds both in development and production. Mineral production for 1925 was $61,492,242 in value as compared to $48,704,- 604 in 1924, or an increase of about 26.2 per cent. This is a new record. It is the first time in the history of mining in British Columbia that we have gone over the fifty million mark. But we have got in the habit of making new records. The year 1924, with its mineral production of almost forty-nine million was a new record. And I am confident that when the mining history of 1926 is written it will be found that we have established yet another new record and that we can report another 25 per cent increase over 1925. What is the explanation? It is not only that the world is settling down, and settling up, after the war. It is not only that in the rebuilding, the refashioning in which all nations are busily engaged, the metals that come from our mines are needed. More than anything else, at least as far as we are concerned, it is because British Columbia has the resources and the fact that the province has been fortunate in recent years in finding men with the enterprise and the vision required to push ahead the labor of their development. From the ranks of our own people in Canada we have prospectors who have faith, energy and requisite knowledge. They are combing our hills season after season and they are of the type of manhood that does not know the meaning of the word quit. More and more these men are learning the importance of the guidance furnished by geological reports, and to an ever increasing extent such reports, thanks to the valuable work of the Canadian Geological Survey, covering areas little known to man, are made available to them-but it is recognized that in the opening up of our Province, containing within itself 372,000 square miles, it is essential that we should have the cooperation of our cousins on this side of the line as well as of our fellow citizens of the Dominion and of the Mother Country.

The Oso tunnel is one of three tunnels located on the San Juan-Chama Project in south-central Colorado. The purpose of the tunnel is to carry water from the upper San Juan watershed through the Continental Divide into the Rio Grande watershed. The Oso tunnel contract was awarded by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to a joint venture of Boyles Brothers Drilling Co., Gibbons & Reed Co., and Cimco in February 1966. The Oso tunnel is 26,660 ft long and has a rock section of 10 ft, 2 in. with a lined diameter of 8 ft circular. The main portion of the rock formation was in the Lewis shale. This formation is quite consistent in hardness and texture with exception of localized limestone concretions and sandy siltstone inclusions. The job was bid on the basis of using a James S. Robbins mole of the P221 series. The decision for using a mole was predicated on the geology and the experience of the same joint venture on the adjoining Azotea tunnel where a mole was successfully used. The Robbins P221 series mole is capable of cutting from 9 ft, 11 in. to a 10 ft, 7 in. diam without any major change. It is 40 ft long and weighs 60 tons. The cutting head has 22 disk-type cutters and one center pilot (standard 9 7/8 -in.) tricone bit. The head is powered by four 75 hp electric motors. Gripper pads at about the midway point on each side of the machine are pushed into the tunnel ribs and thrust-cylinders in front of each gripper apply pressure to the face as the head rotates. The regripping cycle is 3 ft and then the grippers are retracted and advanced. Each cutter on the perimeter of the head is followed by a bucket which scoops up the cut material, almost in the same manner as a water wheel, and dumps it into a conveyor situated along the top of the mole. THE occurrence of twins in large ferrite crystals, made by a new process, was reported in a recent note. This paper describes a typical case of such twinning and suggests, on the basis of the observed facts, why smooth slip-planes are rarely observed in this metal. METHOD OF PREPARATION The material In which the crystals here dealt with were grown was made from 1/8 -in. Armco iron welding rod containing C, 0.04; S, 0.037; P, 0.003; Si, 0.008, and Mn, 0.02 per cent. This rod was cold drawn into wire about 1 mm. dia. A piece of this wire was supported vertically and was locally heated in hydrogen at atmospheric pressure to about 1400° C. by an alternating current (60 cycles per sec.) of about 35 amp., passed through it between a pair of travelling contacts about 8 cm. apart. The rate of travel for the case in hand was 12 cm. per hr. After some 30 cm. of the length of the wire had been heated and cooled in this manner the whole wire was immersed for a few seconds in dilute nitric acid, not restrained by alcohol. Etching was continued until, as nearly as could be judged by eye, the original smooth cylindrical surface of the wire was no longer capable of specular reflection.

Following minor slope failures at the commencement of mining the west wall of the Kanmantoo Mine was redesigned from an overall slope between haul roads of 55° to 46°. This decision was based on a probabilistic analysis which indicated that 46° was the optimum economic slope.

IT does not seem practicable to review all the other specialized curricula that have developed in the mineral industries field in so much detail as has been given for petroleum. Nor is it easy to draw a definite line between true curricula, leading to a designated degree in the special subject, and options, which may range from the mere substitution of one or two courses for others ' in the final years to differences so extensive as almost to amount to separate curricula. Even to attempt to catalogue all the options that have been offered at one time or another would , require too much space. The remainder of this discussion, there- fore, will be confined to three topics which seem to be of major importance. Mining and metallurgical curricula will be covered in a later chapter. Geology The first, from the historical view, is geology in its relation to the mineral industries. Previous, chapters have made clear that in the early years of mineral industry instruction in the United States economic geology and mining engineering, so overlapped one another that men who were by training and experience economic geologists were appointed professors of mining, while men who had graduated as mining engineers sometimes developed into professors of geology. Even today men whose basic training was in- geology as a pure science, and who perhaps took a doctor's .degree in that subject, have attained such distinction in the mineral industries as to be universally accepted as "mining men," and their right to be regarded as mining engineers would not be questioned, even though 'they did not .take a degree in engineering. There were two official representatives of Foreign Governments as guests at the Chicago Meeting. One was Frederick Goransson, managing director of the Saudvikens Steel Works, who represented the Jernkonteret, the Iron and Steel In-stitute of Sweden, and who came to this country especially for our meeting. The other distinguished guest was Commander Toublet, who repre-sented the French Embassy. Commander Toublet delivered a most polished address at the Banquet, dealing with the felicitous relations existing between this country and France for the last 150 years. Com-mander Toublet was accompanied by Mrs. Toublet, who won the hearts of all the ladies present, whose guest she was.

THE decades immediately before and after the end of the nineteenth century (1890-1910) were a period of increased activity in mineral industry education. One reason for this, undoubtedly, was the rapid increase in mineral production in the decade 1880-1890; pig iron and copper production tripled; coal, lead, and zinc output more than doubled. Most of the other mineral substances followed the same general trend. Aluminum production began in 1886; petroleum output, which in 1888 was less than it was in 1882, almost doubled in the next three years. Gold alone showed no appreciable change until its discovery at Cripple Creek in 1891, followed by the Klondike in 1896, brought to boiling a public interest in minerals that had been simmering for some years previously. The first cyanide plant in the United States was erected at Bodie in 1892, and the first chlorination plant at Cripple Creek* the next year. Silver- lead smelting had already greatly developed, and the metallurgy of copper was almost transformed. The hearth area and smelting capacity of copper reverberatory furnaces more than quadrupled between 1878 and 1894; matte converters were first erected at Butte in 1884. Copper production of the United States in 1899 was 20 times that of 1872. While it was the increased technology used in mineral production that really made the field attractive for educated young men, undoubtedly they did not realize that, and were impressed mainly by the quantitative increase in output. Another factor was the increased general interest in engineering education; three times as many men took engineering degrees in the United States in 1890 as in 1880; 1892 showed almost a 56 per cent increase over 1890. A review of production in the Eastern District for 1930 is necessarily brief. Drilling operations were curtailed, due to economic conditions, which in turn reduced production. However, in spite of these conditions, there have been a few outstanding developments which surpass any of recent years. The development of a field in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, New York, has been rapid and probably reached its peak of production in 1930. The gas in this field comes from the White Medina Sand (Silurian), at an average depth of 2600 ft. Some of the wells had an open flow of 20,000,000 cu. ft. of gas per day,' with an original rock pressure of 965 pounds2 per square inch. Another area developed during 1930 was the Tyrone field, in Tyrone Township, Schuyler County, New York. This field was discovered 2nd is practically controlled by the Belmont Quadrangle Drilling Corpn. of New York. The production is from the Oriskany Sand (Devonian), which is found at an average depth of 2100 ft. The field covers approximately 2000 acres, and to date has 14 producing gas wells. The largest well had an open flow of 15,000,000 cu. ft. and an original rock pressure of 740 Ib. The gas from this field is impregnated with sulfur, and requires washing before it is marketed. Because little is known of the Oriskany Sand, a brief description may be of interest. This sand outcrops at Oriskany Falls, New York, and has a thickness of 10 to 12 ft. Its texture is coarse grained, it is composed mostly of quartz and is a regularly bedded sandstone. At Yauger's Wood, in Cayuga County, New York, it is exposed and shows a thickness of 26 feet. The discovery of the Tyrone field led to much prospecting in the New York and the northern part of Pennsylvania, and as a result of this search, the Allegany Gas Co. struck a large gas well in Farmington Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, which created considerable excitement through the Eastern District. Monazite has had a Cinderella-like history. Although nearly go per cent pure rare-earth compound (rare-earth phosphate) it was sought at first not for the rare earths but for the sake of a minor constituent—thorium. The thorium, essential for the Welsbach gaslight mantle, was present in only small quantities and the principal constituents, the rare earths, were largely discarded. Gradually, however, the rare earths have developed uses of their own and today have left the thorium far behind in value. Occurrence Monazite was first produced commercially about 1886, in North Carolina, where it was collected in small sluices by farmers who found it in stream beds on their land. The deposits were later exploited on a larger scale, but were mostly abandoned in a few years, when monazite from Brazil came upon the market in far larger quantities. Domestic production ceased entirely in 1906. The Brazilian source is still active, together with Indian, Dutch East Indies, and Australian deposits. Several other localities in the United States have yielded monazite, but none of these has produced commercially as yet. Monazite occurs originally in pegmatite~ and gneisses, through which, unfortunately, it is scattered in highly dispersed form. All commercially useful deposits consist of transported monazite sands liberated by erosion and concentrated by the action of water, which has sluiced away lighter materials and concentrated the heavy (D = 5.0 to 5.2) grains of monazite, together with ilmenite, zircon, garnet, and other dense minerals. The Carolina deposits were in stream beds; most of the other deposits mentioned are on or near the seashore, where the action of the waves has served to concentrate the monazite. In most cases today, the sands are worked to obtain the ilmenite and zircon, as well as monazite. The minerals are separated by means of sluices, dry tables, and magnetic separators, and each is finally obtained nearly pure. No crushing or grinding is necessary. The concentrates are shipped in fiber bags. Monazite has had a Cinderella-like history. Although nearly go per cent pure rare-earth compound (rare-earth phosphate) it was sought at first not for the rare earths but for the sake of a minor constituent—thorium. The thorium, essential for the Welsbach gaslight mantle, was present in only small quantities and the principal constituents, the rare earths, were largely discarded. Gradually, however, the rare earths have developed uses of their own and today have left the thorium far behind in value. Occurrence Monazite was first produced commercially about 1886, in North Carolina, where it was collected in small sluices by farmers who found it in stream beds on their land. The deposits were later exploited on a larger scale, but were mostly abandoned in a few years, when monazite from Brazil came upon the market in far larger quantities. Domestic production ceased entirely in 1906. The Brazilian source is still active, together with Indian, Dutch East Indies, and Australian deposits. Several other localities in the United States have yielded monazite, but none of these has produced commercially as yet. Monazite occurs originally in pegmatite~ and gneisses, through which, unfortunately, it is scattered in highly dispersed form. All commercially useful deposits consist of transported monazite sands liberated by erosion and concentrated by the action of water, which has sluiced away lighter materials and concentrated the heavy (D = 5.0 to 5.2) grains of monazite, together with ilmenite, zircon, garnet, and other dense minerals. The Carolina deposits were in stream beds; most of the other deposits mentioned are on or near the seashore, where the action of the waves has served to concentrate the monazite. In most cases today, the sands are worked to obtain the ilmenite and zircon, as well as monazite. The minerals are separated by means of sluices, dry tables, and magnetic separators, and each is finally obtained nearly pure. No crushing or grinding is necessary. The concentrates are shipped in fiber bags.
