"Microflotation, laboratory batch, and in-plant minicell continuous tests were conducted to determine if copper ions not only activate sphalerite but also depress pyrite when the minerals are together. Microflotation tests showed that pyrite recovery increased with addition of copper ions in the pH range of 5-10 when alone, but decreased when sphalerite was also present. Batch flotation tests (Red Dog ore) showed that upon addition of copper, pyrite recovery decreased significantly. The continuous tests (Louvicourt Mine) confirmed this and indicated that with excess copper pyrite recovery can increase. The results suggest there is competition for copper and xanthate in favour of sphalerite. To take advantage of this competition it may be necessary to control the sequence and rate of copper, collector, and lime addition. INTRODUCTIONFlotation, in common with all physical separations, is an imperfect process that results in misplacement of minerals. One source of this imperfection is accidental activation by contaminating metal ions. An important practical example is the misplacement of pyrite to zinc concentrates. Flotation of sphalerite generally requires activation by copper ions, added as copper sulphate. Copper ions are also used to activate pyrite [l] hence there is the suspicion that accidental activation contributes to the recovery of pyrite (Py) with the sphalerite (Sp). However, recent literature has shown that copper ions may make Py less floatable if Sp is also present. Xu et al. [2] conducted continuous minicell tests in-plant at Kidd Creek Operations (division of Falconbridge Ltd.) and showed that while the addition of copper sulphate improved zinc/iron selectivity, it did so as much by reducing the recovery of pyrite as increasing zinc recovery (Figure 1)."

Even though there is always a feeling of anticipation before a blast is detonated, most blasts are part of a day’s work. Once in a while there is an event that impresses even the most jaded blaster. Few blasts have had the impact of the Kingdome implosion in March of this year. Fortunately for both the Seattle area and the explosives community, the “impact” of the implosion was far less than many local residents had feared. This outcome, of course, was not by chance, but the result of careful planning and design. An urban implosion requires a mix of engineering, logistics, and public relations. Unique challenges on this project tested the resourcefulness of the entire team.

Os estudos foram suportados pelas análises da recristalização da ferrita, da fração volumétrica de austenita formada e sua evolução composicional/estrutural em função da temperatura de encharque no intervalo do campo intercrítico durante o encharque no tratamento térmico proposto com resfriamento em salmoura – a fim de simular o encharque no recozimento contínuo. As caracterizações microestruturais e mecânicas foram avaliadas por Microscopia Ótica, Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), Dilatometria e ensaios de dureza Vickers, e confrontadas com estudos prévios via Espectroscopia de Raios-X de Dispersão de Energia (EDS).

The prime objective of geometallurgy is to improve the profitability of mines through the use of spatial models of rock properties that have a significant impact on value. Although a key property is the grade of the component of interest, because it directly influences the revenue from saleable material, increasingly attention is being focused on other attributes. These 'non-grade' variables may have a less direct, but equally profound impact on value, either by reducing potential revenue (eg lowering recovery, deleterious elements, etc) or increasing mining or treatment costs (eg comminution, grindability, throughput, reagent use, etc). Collectively, these variables have been described as 'geometallurgical'. There are three main areas of activity required to realise the value of geometallurgy: 1. acquisition of appropriate data through sampling and measurement, 2. building spatial models of geometallurgical variables, and 3. using these models to optimise value. Each of these is built on the foundation of the preceding step. In building reliable spatial models, it is critical that the amount of error introduced to data by the sampling and measurement processes is understood and quantified, in order that the inherent variability of the component of interest can also be properly understood. Management of the quality of grade variables is now applied (with different levels of diligence and success) across nearly all sectors of the mining industry, not least because of the necessity to adhere to Codes of practice (eg JORC, 2004). The necessity for quality management and at least the broad framework of what to do in practice is reasonably understood by many relevant professionals. There are also a number of tools, including software products, statistical analyses and presentation formats, available for those managing grade data. It is also abundantly clear, that in many cases people have little understanding of why they are doing particular quality control activities, or how to sensibly interpret the results. The same is not true for many geometallurgical variables. In almost all instances the authors have seen, the magnitude of sampling and analytical/measurement error variance embedded in geometallurgical test data is untested and unknown. This is partly because until relatively recently, metallurgical data has mainly been collected for the purpose of process and mill design, with few, expensive tests carried out on 'average' samples of the orebody. Increasingly however, there is a move towards collection of much larger data sets from spatially distributed sampling, and thus a growing necessity to understand the errors inherent in both sampling and analysis of these types of variables, and how to manage them. In order to understand how the quality management practices applied to grade variables can be extended to geometallurgical variables, it is essential to understand the theoretical foundation that supports these practices. This requires an analysis of the concepts that underpin the 'principles of additivity' (Matheron, 1963), the 'theory of sampling' (Gy, 1982, Pitard, 1993), and 'statistical process control' (Shewhart, 1930). Relevant concepts are then integrated to form a foundation to develop methods to improve the quality management of geometallurgical variables. Application of this framework will significantly increase the integrity of geometallurgical data, the reliability of geometallurgical models and ultimately the value derived from implementing geometallurgy. What do all iron ore mines have in common? Perfect production days! Yes, those harmonious 24-hour periods when the stars align and the daily output number rockets past the long-term average to hit new heights. While perfect days are always welcome, the focusing question iswas that just a ‘flash in the pan’ (due to a special cause) or an indication of the process’s capability (with clues to the common causes) which, if addressed, could make every day perfect? In the context of today’s operating environment, with the need to maximise productivity at minimum cost, it’s an important question.Investigations reveal that the throughput difference between a perfect production day and the average is often in the order of 40 per cent, and that bulk solids handling (BSH) system deficiencies are the largest (>50 per cent) class of lost opportunity. Root causes for underperformance of elements in BSH systems can often be traced back to the detailed design and even study-stage oversights. Essentially baked into the fabricated plant, operations are effectively forced to accept them at the point of practical completion and then deal with the consequences for the life of the mine. Subsequent normalisation of these defects in the planning process reduces visibility and hence the impetus for long-term solutions in favour of lower targets and quick fixes to keep the show on the road. On an industry wide basis the design processes and assumptions responsible for BSH system underperformance become enshrined as common practice and hence repeated across sites and organisations.In addition to making the case for action, practical steps that can be taken to help realise the significant productivity prize and avoid the problems in first place are provided.CITATION:Wellwood, G A, 2017. Whenever misfired holes or portions of misfired holes remain after a blast is fired, a hazardous situation exists until the unfired explosive materials have been disposed of properly. Yet, there are so many factors that can contribute to misfires that it is impossible to give blanket instructions on how to handle them. To complicate matters, misfires today are rare due to reliable blasting products. As such, it isn’t very surprising that many blasters have never had to deal with a misf i re condition. While the likelihood of a misfire occurrence is minimal, you should always be pre p a red to handle a misfire should you be involved in such an event. To begin, every blaster and blasting org a n i z a t i o n should develop a misfire policy which contains the company’s safe operating pro c e d u res, emergency contact list, as well as any regulatory compliance re q u i re m e n t s . Tailgate and/or company-wide safety meetings should communicate the company’s contingent misfire pro c ed u res and any special site-specific precautions BEFORE the start of any project.

"To improve the economic and environmental performance of underground mining operations, it is common practice to return the metallurgical waste material underground as backfill. This is called hydraulic backfill and is used to fill the mined-out areas not exposed to further mining. To provide mechanical support for underground mining a cemented backfill is normally used. Since its introduction, cemented backfill has allowed mining companies to increase their ore extraction and improve working and environmental conditions. However, cemented backfill represents up to 50% to 85% of the mine’s operating cost compared with 5% to 10% for hydraulic backfill.These economic pressures have led mining companies to carry out research into the partial or total replacement of cement using a variety of alternative materials. The materials are generally site-specific materials, readily available, and cost-effective relative to cement. Such investigations have led to reduced cost of many backfill mixes while maintaining, and in some cases improving, the physical properties of cemented backfill. However, in most cases, cement still remains an integral part of any binder combination. This can be attributed to the alternative binders investigated being either non-binding materials or capable of generating only low-strength backfills, except when used in conjunction with cement.This paper provides a historical review of backfilling binder materials and their characteristics. In particular, it reviews the many alternative materials that have been proposed to either partially or fully replace Portland cement as the main binder."

Este trabalho avalia o processamento por moagem de alta energia bola em TiB2 no efeito da inoculação de alumínio puro. O pó TiB2 comercial foi processado no moinho de alta energia do tipo SPEX e misturado com alumínio em pó de alta pureza. A mistura foi conformada em pastilhas e sinterizadas em atmosfera inerte. As pastilhas foram introduzidas em alumínio puro fundido em teores de 0,15 e 0,30% em peso de TiB2 e solidificado por resfriamento natural. A análise macrografica mostrou um grande aumento no refino de grão por inoculação com TiB2 processado do que em comparação com o material como recebido.

The mercury, gold, silver, copper, lead and zinc values of soils over altered and mineralised rock were determined to establish the potential use of mercury as an indicator element in geochemical prospecting. The results are presented to show that mercury can be used successfully in prospecting for precious metal mineralization in the Thames-Waihi area.

Tracey Khanna, Assistant Editor of UK?s Mining Magazine discusses some of the new and important environmental challenges, physical and social, that are facing mining companies. The tide of public opinion has turned strongly against those companies which are unable to show that they are practising responsible environmental stewardship. This is, no doubt, in part due to the recent focus of the international media on environmental issues and constantly improving means of communications, which has brought the whole subject of mining and the environment to those who, in the past, had only a limited awareness of the industry. Mining companies today face new and important challenges with regard to the environment, both physical and social. New technology and a greater understanding of waste management techniques has helped to bring about improved handling and disposal of mines wastes, so reducing some of the impacts. However, improved technology has also brought about the economic viability of exploiting increasingly lower-grade ore from open pits, resulting in a greater visual impact.

The Olallie RARE II study area has volcanic cinder deposits with a sow potential for development. No mining claims or prospects are known within the study area, and except for common construction materials such as volcanic cinders and stone, no mineral deposits were identified. An evaluation of the geology indicates that metallic mineral deposits are unlikely to exist. No significant metallic concentrations were reported in samples from the area. The only resources in the study area are about 30 million cu yds (23 million cu m) of cinders in three cones. The cinder deposits in the study area cannot compete economically with enormous deposits of similar material in more accesible areas closer to markets. At the present rate of consumption, resources outside the area are adequate far into the future. The geothermal potential of the study area is being evaluated by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Billiton Process Research has carried out extensive research over the past four years to develop new process technology using bioleaching for extraction of copper and nickel from their sulphide concentrates. Continuous pilot scale and laboratory batch testwork has been carried out with adapted mesophile bacterial cultures at40°C?45°C, moderate thermophile cultures at 50°C?55°C and thermophile cultures at 65°C?85°C. Pilot scale work has demonstrated the commercial viability of mesophile cultures for bioleaching of secondary copper sulphide and nickel sulphide concentrates. Moderate thermophiles offer benefits in terms of reduced cooling requirements for commercial reactors and, in the case of bioleaching of nickel concentrates, some selectivity over bioleaching of pyrite. Continuous pilot scale testwork has shown that thermophiles achieve efficient bioleaching of primary copper sulphide and nickel sulphide concentrates, giving much higher recoveries than achieved by bioleaching with a mesophile or moderate thermophile culture.

"Ecological Engineering, a biotechnological approach to the decommissioning of base metal mining wastes, is being tested on two pits (Gloryholes) in Newfoundland, Canada. Pit #2 has an average pH of 3.5 and flows into Pit #1 where, through additional ground water contribution, the pH is circumneutral, ranging between 5.5 to 7.The AMD in Pit #2 originates from underground workings and exposed massive sulphide on the pit walls. The overflow from Pit #1 averages about 10 L/s with less than 0.2 mg/L of Cu and 40 mg/L of Zn.Ecological Engineering utilizes organic substrate as a source of carbon and nutrients for microbial populations which can generate alkalinity and reduce metals. In 1989, limnocorrals (enclosures of 4 m diameter and approx 3 m depth) were placed in both pits to test the most suitable organic amendment (peat and sawdust). Microbial alkalinitygeneration was evident 95 days after placement of the amendment on July 4, 1989. The pH had increased after 120 days from 3.5 to 4.5 and by day 480 the pH was 7 in limnocorrals in Pit #2. Zinc concentrations in the limnocorrals in Pit #2, dropped from an average of 35 mg/L to about 2 mg/L or less, by day 480.A scaled-up experiment has been under way since August 25, 1990, where 390 m3 are treated in pit #2 and 750 m3 in Pit #1. One hundred eighty days after placement of the amendment, zinc was reduced in the acid Pit #2 from 40 mg/L to 15 mg/L. Research is underway to determine those factors which limit microbial activity."

A modified approach to the implementation of Gy?s sampling theory is discussed and used to design a procedure for sampling crushed gold ore feed to metallurgical process plants. The approach involves calibration of certain ore-specific parameters. These parameters were calibrated for two different crushed gold ores en route to grinding mills in process plants. The model predictions were compared with the predictions from Gy?s original model. Far smaller masses of samples are required by the modified model than by Gy?s model at the same relative variance. The representativeness of the sampling procedure if normally distributed errors are assumed was also calculated. These procedures and evaluations lead to significant savings on cost of handling and preparation of the samples and to a quantifiable degree of confidence in the analytical results for the process plant.

Para satisfacer estos requerimientos el rango de variación de los minerales constituyentes del cemento debe ser muy ajustado. En ese sentido, el presente texto plantea una solución integrada para el control de la calidad basada en un profundo conocimiento geológico de la cantera de caliza, lo que permite programar las mezclas de materias primas de acuerdo a los requerimientos de la planta.

In the condition that drilling and blasting technique is inevitable depending on the rock mass and material characteristics on mining activities, the fragmentation rate and particle size distribution of the muckpile after blasting has important influences on the performance of subsequent mining activities such as loading, hauling, crushing, grinding etc. and the total costs of that mine. Drilling and blasting is an important step in this process chain and it's results such as fragmentation, muckpile shape and looseness, dilution, damage and rock softening effect the efficiency of downstream processes. There is an increasing body of blasting research indicating significant impacts in these downstream processes.

I have spent most of the past 35 years working as an economic geologist in the area of exploration and development of base and precious metals. Most of this period has been as an employee of Trans-National-Corporations (TNC's). I presently act as a consulting geologist to a joint venture company, bringing together two such TNC's: Anglo American Corporation and affiliated companies De Beers (Diamonds) and Minorco (Metals mining outside of Southern Africa), and Normandy Mining Limited ofAustralia. Normandy is presently through its gold arm PosGold, Australia's largest gold miner and Anglo American can claim to be the world's largest gold company producing over 280 tonnes of gold a year, more than twice its nearest rival Gold Fields of South Africa. In addressing this topic, the role that Government can, and should play in mineral development, I will be drawing heavily on some examples from these and other TNC's experience in recent offshore mining investment.
