Introduction Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. (ACMDC) started gold production at its Masbate gold mine early in 1980. This involved an open-pit mine and a 3.5-k/d (3850-stpd) carbon-in-pulp processing facility (Pizzaro and Antonio, 1981). When this operation started, the mine began stockpiling sub-grade milling material averaging 1 g/t (0.029 oz per st) gold. Furthermore, geologists estimated that there were additional low grade reserves within the ultimate pit limits. These amounted to 2.4 Mt (2.6 million st) with an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.03 oz per st) gold. The success of low cost heap leaching prompted an investigation to determine if this tech¬nique would be applicable for the low grade Masbate ore. The findings were favorable and a series of laboratory tests were undertaken. These tests indicated the amenability of this subgrade milling ore to heap leaching. Depending on ore size, gold extractions of more than 60% were obtained. To further define operating parameters for a commercial heap leaching plant, a 400-t (440-st) batch pilot plant was built and operated. These test results were used to design the first commercial heap leaching plant in the Philippines. One design concern was the control of solutions during the rainy season. Due to the material's low grade, every effort was made to minimize capital and operating costs. To this end, surplus mining equipment from the copper operations of ACMDC and used machinery in the crushing circuit were considered. Location: The Masbate gold heap leaching operations are located on the northeastern part of Masbate Island, Philippines. This is about 480 km (300 miles) south-east of Manila. Climate: The climate is moderate with two distinct periods. The dry season runs from January through June, and the rainy season extends from July through December. During the wet season, the rainfall at the mine site averages 300 mm/m (11.8 in. per month) for a total of about 2000 mm/year (78 in. per year). However, heavy downpours in excess of 100 mm/h (4 in. per hour) can occur. Geology: Four distinct rock types have been identified in the pit area. They are tuffaceous agglomerates, andesitic agglomerates, metasedimentary rocks, and hornblende augite andesitic porphyry. The tuffaceous agglomerate occupies the northern and western flanks of the mine. Andesitic agglomerates are localized distinctly in the central portion of the volcanic plug within the mine site. The eastern boundary of the mine is occupied by metasedimentary rocks, whereas, the hornblende augite andesitic porphyry occurs as an intrusive within the andesitic agglomerate and tuffaceous agglomerate. Some areas of the pit contain high proportions of clay minerals, requiring an agglomeration step in the flowsheet. This ensures satisfactory percolation through the heaps. Changing mining conditions, legislative issues, rising costs, and the constrained supply of skills and electricity in South Africa, have been some of the criteria forcing mine operators and engineers to review the traditional use of compressed air to power underground hand-held drilling operations in narrow-stope, hard-rock mines. In answering the question, 'What is the best way to power this mine?', they have resorted to trade-off studies with results of limited usefulness, because they are site-specific, and use only a few comparative parameters, based on a small data set. This paper aims to provide definitive, objective, and quantitative decision-making approaches to evaluating alternative energy-delivery systems for stoping in narrow-reef hard rock mines, based on primary and relevant criteria. These include quantifiable criteria such as capital expenditure, operating costs, resulting financial returns, energy and water usage, production performance, life-of-mine, etc. Other important criteria with qualitative aspects are integrated. These are safety, health, and environmental concerns, legislative requirements, business risk, technology change, etc. The paper begins with a review of decision-making processes available, and proposes the use of the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method as a multiple-criteria decision-making tool and the decision tree based on milestone-driven uncertainties, to validate the selection of the energy delivery system. The results of a multiple-criteria questionnaire completed by a variety of industry experts and professionals, such as production and operation managers, consultants, suppliers, and techno-financial analysts, are discussed. The evaluation indicates the potential for hydropower to be the best solution for narrow-reef hard rock mines, based on current information, mine design layout and production.

Ore-pass hazards are a significant safety problem in US underground metal mines. From 1975 to 1995, nearly 75% of injuries during pulling or freeing of ore-pass chutes were related to falls of broken rock or the use of hand tools. Risk assessment methods are being used to identify the most probable causes of ore-pass failures and analyse the factors that result in malfunctioning or safety reduction. Static and dynamic loads are being measured in the laboratory and by field testing, with data from test ore passes compared with mine data to characterise true system behaviour. Computer modelling using closed-form solutions, finite element analysis and a newly developed particle flow code are being use to predict loads from ore and waste flow and impact. Preliminary results indicate that dynamic impacts may be much less than expected, as a result of damping factors, normal and shear stiffness and mass frictional characteristics

One copper Isasmelt furnace has been operated in Xstrata Copper at Mount Isa in Australia since 1992. A thermodynamic model and computer program, CuModel, has been developed to model the distribution behaviors of Cu, Fe, S, O, Ni, Co, Sn, Pb, Zn, As, Sb, Bi, Au and Ag, copper loss in the slag, and heat balance in copper smelting process, matte converting process and copper continuous smelting process. The thermodynamic model has been used to model the key parameters in the control of the copper Isasmelt furnace. The effects of the process parameters on the control of the copper Isasmelt furnace have been predicted and discussed. These process parameters include SiO2/Fe, matte grade, coal, temperature, spec air of feed, oxygen enrichment, and MgO contents in slag.

Bowen Basin coalmines suffer from hot and humid ambient conditions during the summer period. The ambient conditions combined with high VRTs, increasing depth of working and significant equipment heat loads results in heat issues underground. Coalmines operate under heat stress management plans as required by legislation with associated trigger action response plans (TARPs). Some mines also employ refrigeration as part of their heat management strategy.A recent case study was conducted on a mine producing about 4.5 Mt/a from their longwall and experiences summer surface ambient temperatures of about 23.5ºCwb. The expected virgin rock temperature is 46ºC at 300 m depth. The mine currently introduces a modest amount of surface cooling at the portal using ‘off-the-shelf’ air conditioning units. This system does not effectively manage face temperature primarily due to positional inefficiency.Underground conditions remain hot in summer and work is typically undertaken in accordance with the Heat TARP. This has a direct impact on the productivity of crews, worker comfort and also negatively impacts the workforce morale. The mine commissioned a study to determine a refrigeration strategy aimed at maintaining underground conditions below TARP levels 90 per cent of the time.The ventilation network model was calibrated against actual temperature data to simulate the heat loads including longwall, conveyor system, strata and auxiliary diesel fleet. This model was then used to determine the cooling requirements for bulk surface cooling, bulk underground cooling, surface district cooling and underground district cooling strategies.These estimates were used to undertake a total owning cost trade-off for the different strategies. The study concluded that a chilled air shaft has the lowest technical risk but the highest total owning cost due to shaft development needs. Introducing chilled water to an underground cooler via boreholes offered the lowest total owning cost and was therefore recommended.CITATION:van den Berg, L and Olsen, M, 2017. The New Jersey Zinc Co. successfully holed through a 2 1/2-mile haulage tunnel connecting its new Ivanhoe shaft with the Van Mater Shaft at Austinville, Va. This 8x 10-ft cross-section tunnel was driven from both ends and met at a point approximately a mile from one shaft and a mile and a half from the other. In order to make certain that the faces met accurately on line and grade it was necessary to refine conventional mine surveying practices. The mines that are serviced by these shafts are located in the southwestern part of Virginia approximately midway between Roanoke and Bristol at the west foot of the Blue Ridge. While the presence of lead-zinc sulfide ores has been known in this area for more than 200 years, it was in 1902 that New Jersey Zinc Co. acquired the Austinville property, which has been in constant operation since that time. About ten years ago the company undertook an extensive diamond drilling program at Ivanhoe several miles to the southwest. This program was successful in locating sufficient ore to justify the purchase of a number of the properties in this area and plans were made to develop the new orebodies. The discovery of this ore as well as substantial addi- tional reserves at Austinville resulted in a decision by the company to increase its daily milling capacity to 3000 tons, of which about 1000 tons would be supplied from the Ivanhoe mine. After careful consideration of all possible methods of transporting this volume of ore from Ivanhoe to the mill, it became evident that diesel locomotive haulage through a 2½-mile tunnel between the two mines would best suit prevailing conditions. Since the lowest operating level, known as the 1100 level, of each mine would be at approximately the same elevation, it was obvious that such a tunnel should be driven on this level. Not only would this tunnel facilitate feeding Ivanhoe ore into the underground crusher and skip loading installation at Austinville, but it would also open up a known orebody 5000 ft southwest of the Van Mater shaft. In addition it would provide a valuable diamond drilling base from which a large and a potentially favorable but untested block of ground might be explored. Testwork at Goedehoop Colliery showed that fine coal, essentially?150 microns can be successfully beneficiated using froth flotation. Both conventional and column flotation were tested. It was found that the traditional stirred tank type of flotation machines used in conventional flotation produced the best recovery of fine coal. After extensive testwork it was decided to develop a flotation machine on Goedehoop Colliery that would combine stirred tank and quiescent column technology. It was thought that this design would give the best combination of recovery and selectivity. The Multicell was developed and is producing results acceptable for Witbank coal flotation. Geologists, engineers, technicians and surveyors have successfully utilized technical software in the mining industry for over 30 years. Software for processing survey, geology, mine engineering and planning information make these functions more efficient by automating repetitive tasks and reducing data processing errors. While these systems have been improved incrementally overtime, new systems that represent giant leaps in technology have been introduced to help mining operations increase productivity and reduce costs. However, their widespread use within the industry has left individual companies without a competitive advantage. Additionally, the ability of these applications to provide the productivity improvements required in today’s uncertain market conditions has since peaked. The next wave of technology—integration of independent software applications—is just starting to emerge and will have a significant effect on the productivity of mining operations. To reap the productivity gains required to remain competitive, mining companies must exploit the collective knowledge and experience of every employee in the organization. Integration of independent software application allows companies to leverage information from all activities, enabling staff to make better decisions to improve productivity. This paper outlines the importance of integration as productivity enabler. Key performance indicators, strategic mine planning, resources management and mine-to-mill integration are discussed as processes that enable productivity. The Gemcom Enterprise Mining System (GEMS)is introduced as the industry’s first integrated solution that enables these productive processes. The paper concludes with a comment on the level of change required to realize the benefits of integration.

"The mineral potential of the Nanisivik area was discovered as far back as 1910 when a prospector of the Geological Survey of Canada, on an expedition under Captain J. G.Bernier, recorded a deposit of pyrite with minor sphalerite and galena. An outcrop of the present orebody was discovered by Texas Gulf Company in 1957. Subsequent drilling outlined the orebody consisting of 6,000,000 tonnes of ore containing 13 % Zinc and 1.5 % Lead. The orebody appears to have been formed by the filling of a limestone cavern with sulphides. The sulphide minerals consist of pyrite, sphalerite and galena. The limestone bedrock is mostly dolomite with some calcite and magnesite. A cutoff grade of about 6% Zinc has been calculated.In 1972 Mineral Resources International Limited took an option on the property. Upon completion of the feasibility study by Watts, Griffiths and McOuat, the then new independent project management group of Strathcona Mineral Services Ltd. were engaged to develop the project through the financing, construction and operating phases. Strathcona Mineral Services still manage the project from their head office in Toronto and through the Mine Manager and Department Superintendents at the Mine site. The interest for the project is presently split five ways: Mineral Resources International Ltd. 53.5 %, Government of Canada 18 %, Metallgesellschaft A.G. of Germany 11.25 %, Billiton B. V. of Holland 11.25 % and Texas Gulf Co. 6 %."

The lead-acid battery recycling is a major industrial activity (more than four million tonnes recycled lead per year) that generates large amounts of toxic wastes such as lead slag, mattes and acidic sludge, besides airborne emissions. This is a waste-producer industry that needs a definitive solution to avoid its negative environmental impact and getting a sustainable lead production. That is the principal target of the CLEANLEAD technology, which properly combines both hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical routes aiming to get zero-waste production, reducing the use of energy and resources in all phases of battery reprocessing, and consequently, greatly decreasing the operating cost. There will be no toxic emissions to land, water or air, and obtained products are pure lead metal or pure lead oxide, and commercial gypsum instead of waste sludge.

The paper presents problems resulting from the mobile mining machines functioning and requirements concerning a machine control system, which controls successive operation stages of such machines. The problem is presenting on the example of a mobile hydraulic support to remove residual pillars in copper ore mines. The paper describes an algorithm and a flow chart to be followed when designing a supports control system. Design of control systems to ensure machine function under given circumstances is also presented.

The investigation of the iron-gadolinium phase diagram is part of a project undertaken by the Bureau of Mines and sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission to investigate rare-earth alloys. Data from the investigation of the iron-gadolinium phase diagram revealed a single eutectic system with very limited terminal solubility and three intermediate phases. The eutectic point occurs at about 85 percent gadolinium, and the eutectic isotherm, which occurs at 850° C., extends from the compound Fe2Gd to 99-plus percent gadolinium. Very little solubility of the solid phases in each other was observed. The three intermediate phases, FegGd, Fe3Gd, and FeaGd, melt incongruently at peritectic isotherms at 1,320°, 1,150°, and 1,080° C., respectively. The crystalline systems of the three phases were determined as follows: FegGd, hexagonal; Fe3Gd, hexagonal or rhombohedral; and FeaGd, face-centered cubic. No lowering or raising of the alpha-gamma iron transformation at 910° C., the gamma-delta iron transformation at 1,388° C., or the gadolinium transformation at 1,262° C. was observed. The principal methods used in determining the iron-gadolinium phase diagram were melting-point determinations, thermal analyses, metallographic examination, and X-ray diffraction analyses. Melting, heat treating, and thermal analyses were conducted in a vacuum or under a helium atmosphere because of the avidity with which oxygen combines with gadolinium at elevated temperatures. A few hardness values were determined, but they had no part in the derivation of the phase diagram. No other mechanical properties were determined.

Occupational exposure to hand transmitted vibration (HTV) arises from the hand held powered tools extensively used in the mining and construction industry such as rock drills, chipping hammers, chain saws etc. Regular exposure to HTV is the major cause of a range of permanent injuries to human hands and arms which are commonly referred to as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). In addition to this, the percussive tools generate overall sound power levels in excess of 110dBA in most cases. Such a high sound power level greatly exceeds the maximum permissible exposure limit (PEL) of organizations such as National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Long term occupational exposure to this noise has been diagnosed as the main reason for permanent hearing loss in the operators. It is therefore important to develop an understanding of the mechanisms which lead to these high vibration and sound levels and in order to do this a detailed computational model of a pneumatic chipping hammer has been made. This paper presents a nonlinear computational model of a pneumatic chipping hammer. In order to better understand the dynamics of the chipping hammer, the hammer was subdivided into components that are shown in figure 1 (a) (based on a chipping hammer manufactured by Atlas-Copco). The hammer mainly consisted of a center body, a moving piston and a chisel. Compressed air is used to drive the piston inside of a cylinder and on the downward stroke this piston impacts the chisel to create the hammer effect. The machine has one pneumatic valve and this valve regulates the air supply either to the upper chamber or to the lower chamber. The valve changes according to the relative pressures in the two chambers and the supply pressure. There are also twelve different exhaust ports at two positions along the cylinder labeled upper ports and lower ports. As the piston moves the ports can be closed or open (allowing exhaust). Fundamentally, the computational model was made up of two different sub-models, a fluid model and a structural dynamic model as shown in Figure 3 (a) and (b) respectively. The first sub-model takes into consideration the fluid dynamics of the machine since the hammer is driven by compressed air. Equations for the mass flow rate though bleed orifices (assuming an isentropic process) 1 is used to determine the mass flow into and out of the upper and lower chambers. Fine Gravity Separation in the Reflux Classifier, Exploiting a High Shear Rate, Laminar Flow Mechanism The Reflux Classifier is used in the gravity separation of particles over a broad range of particle sizes. The device consists of a fluidised bed zone, with a system of parallel inclined channels above. The inclined channels provide a significant hydraulic advantage over conventional fluidised beds via the so-called Boycott Effect (Boycott, 1920). This paper describes a new advance in fine gravity separation based on the high shear rate and laminar flow profile that arises when closely spaced inclined channels are deployed. As reported recently (Galvin et al, 2009a), a powerful density based separation mechanism develops from this arrangement, suppressing the effects of particle size. In this paper we focus on two areas, firstly the application of the separator in the laboratory for batch fractionation of particles of varying size and density to determine the grade recovery curve and hence the liberation, and secondly the step change in separation performance achieved on a continuous steady state basis when closely spaced inclined channels are used. The variation in the separation density with particle size decreases significantly, and the Ecarte Probable Error (Ep) remains at low levels over a broad size range.

The development of a sampling instrument for the assessment of an underground coal miner’s exposure to airborne respirable coal mine dust on a continuous and real-time basis has been long identified as essential for timely initiation of control actions. A respirable dust dosimeter (RDD) which operates on the principle of increasing pressure across a filter media with increasing dust mass on the filter has been developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Comparisons of the performance of the RDD with an U.S. approved gravimetric respirable dust sampler (GRD) have shown that the RDD may meet the requirements for measuring miners’ exposures on a cumulative, near real-time basis such as mid-shift and end of shift exposures. Recently, the performances of the RDD and GRD were compared by conducting side-by-side area sampling experiments in a controlled experimental environment in the laboratory and in underground coal mines under normal operating conditions. In this paper, the results from the in-mine study are presented and discussed. The experimental design for the in-mine study included two mines in different coal seams in different geographic coal regions. To ensure a wide range of concentrations, the experiments were conducted in a continuous miner section in Mine 1, and a longwall face in Mine 2. Airborne dust sampling was conducted for four different shifts at each mine. In each shift, two samples of different exposure durations were collected from two different locations. Each sample consisted of the readings of three dosimeters and the exposed filters from the three paired GRD samplers. As a result, a total of 96 comparative samples were obtained, 48 for each mine. The data were analyzed for the precision of the RDD and GRD measurements and for the relationships between the differential pressure of the RDD and the mass of dust on the paired GRD filter. The analyses indicate that, on the average, the RDD and the GRD track the airborne respirable dust concentrations well, exhibiting both a high correlation between the two measurements and a reliable predictive relationship of one from the other. Details of the experimental design, data analyses procedures, results, conclusions and recommendations of the underground experiments are presented in this paper.

The integration of safety-related tasks into the overall structure of entrepreneurial tasks is an inalienable requirement for the sustainable achievement of positive effects. Investments into technical and personnel occupational safety that are tied in a streamlined organizational structure guarantee the improvement of defined indicators. The labor force is of central importance. Its added value ought to be ensured. It is necessary to move away from the employees‘ hazard awareness towards a safety awareness including many other aspects in order to save costs in the long run.

Hydrothermal brines are extracted from significant depths below the surface of the earth and arrive at the surface at elevated pressure and temperature. The exact chemistry and conditions of these brines depends upon the rock formations through which the water travels, but many of the brines are rich in dissolved minerals especially silica which is often saturated in the brine. At pressure and temperature the minerals remain in solution but in order to extract heat from the brines, they need to be cooled and during which many of the minerals precipitate causing problems. Where precipitation is a problem in the downstream processing, the brines are maintained at a high enough temperature and pressure so as to avoid precipitation and injected back into the geothermal formation. This results in a significant loss in potential energy that could be recovered from the geothermal brines. If left to precipitate in an uncontrolled manner, many of the minerals will precipitate as gels, in a high surface area form which is difficult to extract from the liquor and which can causes problems. Precipitation in this manner often builds up on the inside of pipes, reducing the pipe cross-section available for fluid flow and reducing the overall efficiency of the plant. If the brines are seeded at the appropriate time or the precipitation conditions are changed, mineral particles can be grown and separated more easily from the brine. During this precipitation and growth phase the chemistry of the local environment can also be altered to grow more valuable particulates. Some of the specific chemistries will be discussed with reference to known geothermal brines and what needs to be done to precipitate value added products. A theoretical approach to the complete extraction of minerals from geothermal brines is also discussed with the goal of extracting more heat from the brine prior to reinjection into the well.
