Effective strata control is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient mining operation. If the strata in the vicinity of an opening are not controlled effectively, it is impossible to perform a safe, efficient and economical operation. In this paper, the reasons and outcome of instability problems observed in roadways opened in clay and marl at the Bolu Colliery of Yeni Çeltek Establishment are investigated. Roadways under examination were located in a syncline causing high residual tectonic stresses. Factors affecting the instability have been studied thoroughly by examining geology and tectonics of the area, establishing convergence measuring stations to understand in situ behaviour of supports and laboratory tests to determine engineering properties of samples taken from nearby convergence measurement stations. As a conclusion, a new production strategy and a new support system are recommended to maintain stability.

The ferroalloys industry has generated historically substantial solid waste. The accumulated waste causes serious problems to the environment. However, it is possible to transform the solid waste into an environment-friendly resource to serve the human being. Consequently, the construction of plants that are ?environment-friendly? and that accommodate ?recycling? has become a target of most ferroalloy producers in the world to ensure sustainable development. This paper introduces the practice of Shanxi Jiaocheng Yiwang Ferroalloys Works, the biggest manganese metal producer in China, in the development of an ?environment-friendly and recycling? process. The process includes power generation using coal gangue, waste from local coal mines; hollow bricks manufacture using slag and fly ash from the power station; cement production using slag from ferroalloy smelting; recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous elements in the dust from the furnace gas cleaning system; application of silica dust in construction and so on. The final objective of the plant is to realize zero discharge of solid waste. The profit of the ?environment-friendly and recycling? process compensates in part for the operational expense of the environment facilities.

Two comprehensive surveys, which focus upon backfill practices and the economics of backfilling in underground mines in Canada, have been conducted. The two surveys were designed to assess operational practices and costs associated with the wide scope of filling operations that must be met by individual mines, ranging from raw material feed to the preparation plant, through underground backfill transportation, to in-stope product placement. This paper presents the current state of backfill usage in Canada, identifies trends in minefill practices and provides mine operators with an updated database of information upon which they might compare their own practices and costs with present trends throughout the industry.

Extensive site investigations revealed that abandoned shallow mine workings exist under a site planned for construction of a major new facility. Since the mine voids were susceptible to collapse, they were stabilized by grouting. After completion of the mine remediation, three types of deep foundations (micro-piles, auger-cast piles, and drilled piers) were considered for this site. Micro-piles spread the load via the bond between the pile and the bedrock. Without significant length socketed in rock, the axial load of auger-cast piles and drilled piers has to be concentrated on end bearing. Although spreading the load is preferable in this environment, economic consideration dictated the choice of drilled piers for construction.

A mathematical model for bioleaching at the agglomerate scale is developed. The agglomerate is defined as a unit volume of a heap which contains a solid phase (a size distribution of ore particles), a liquid phase (stagnant and flowing leaching solution) and a gas phase (flowing air and air pockets). Leaching at the level of an ore particle is modelled using a diffusion-reaction equation, and oxidation by attached and detached microbes is treated separately. With the aid of the mathematical model, the effect of particle size distribution on the bioleaching of an ore containing a mixture of chalcocite and pyrite, and a culture of iron oxidizers, is investigated.

"The Thompson Mill processes ores from the Thompson and Birchtree Mines. While the Thompson ore has very little magnesium containing gangue, the Birchtree orebody consists of veins of massive sulphide in a rock matrix that contains a high proportion of magnesium silicate minerals. A significant fraction of the magnesium is floatable, which lead to MgO levels varying from 3-11 wt% in the Birchtree concentrate. The magnesium in the concentrate causes a higher operating temperature in the smelter, reducing furnace life.Birchtree ore represented 20-30% of the mill ore receipts prior to October 2003. Since then the fraction of Birchtree ore has increased to 50%. A reduction of the MgO in concentrate to less than 3% in the total mill concentrate was required to allow safe and economic smelter operation.In October of 2002 a miniplant was set up to simulate the Birchtree plant circuit. Several flow sheet modifications were tested that led to a proposal for a circuit having increased cleaning capacity for the scavenger concentrate and a recleaner on this concentrate. Addition of CMC in rougher cleaner feed was also found to be required. The solution was confirmed through pilot plant testing in the mill in December of 2002. A full-scale installation was designed, engineered, and installed between February and September of 2003 with commissioning in September and October of 2003. Target metallurgy was achieved one week after start-up on slurry to coincide with the Birchtree Mine tonnage increase. This paper highlights the development, design and commissioning stages of the project.The new MgO rejection circuit has successfully allowed the processing of Birchtree ores producing concentrate consistently below 3% MgO. In addition, the new circuit increased overall nickel recovery in the mill.INTRODUCTIONThe Thompson Nickel Belt located approximately 700km north of Winnipeg was discovered in the early 1950’s. Inco first produced nickel from the area in 1960. Over the years the mill has processed several ores from different ore bodies in the area. Currently the Thompson Mill processes two significantly different ores from two mines, Thompson and Birchtree. The Thompson ore is a massive sulphide orebody hosted in schist, containing feldspars, quartz and biotite. Thompson Ore is characterized by high nickel recoveries and clean, low MgO containing concentrates (<2.5% MgO). The Birchtree ore is ultramafic and contains a high percentage of Mg-silicates such as serpentine, chlorite, biotite, amphiboles and talc. Some of these Mg-silicates report to the nickel concentrate and prior to commissioning of the MgO rejection circuit the Birchtree nickel concentrate typically contained 5-8% MgO"

"SynopsisOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. Often mine owners will choose the contractor option without fully understanding the consequences of undertaking this option. Traditionally, contract mining has come at a cost premium of about 15% to 20% compared to an owner mining scenario. However, due to the large number of junior mining companies entering the mining arena in South Africa contract mining rates have increased, with cost premiums as high as 50% being reported. This paper looks at the merits of owner mining versus contract mining and describes under what conditions it may be favourable to select the one option over the other. In addition, the methodology of entering into contract negotiations with the objective of establishing a fair and sustainable relationship is discussed.IntroductionOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. The cohesive zone in the blast furnace is largely affected by the softening and melting behaviour of ferrous burden because of its vital role in the blast furnace process. The Visual High Temperature Methodology (VHTM) has been given to study the softening and melting behaviour of sinter, two kinds of lump ores and acid pellet intuitively. Before softening, both two kinds of lump ore swelled and more serious for lump ore B because of its denser structure than lump ore A. The softening and melting temperature intervals are different from one another and this phenomenon contributed to the gas permeability of ore layer in the cohesive zone since the ‘ore window’ has formed. Besides, the softening and melting behaviour of mixed burdens have been studied, where it has been found that the softening and melting characteristics of mixed burden A (consisting of sinter and lump ore A) is better than mixed burden B (consisting of sinter and lump ore B) and mixed burden C (consisting of sinter and acid pellet) despite the poorest characteristics of lump ore A. The reason is that the high temperature interactivity between lump ore A and sinter is much better than lump ore B and acid pellet. The high temperature interactivity is mainly influenced by the chemical compositions, porosity and contact condition. Tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits are under-represented in Australia’s inventory of known resources of this deposit type, relative to regions globally with comparable geology. To support discovery of major new deposits, a continental scale analysis of Australia’s potential for tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits is being undertaken. The analysis applies a mineral systems approach to map the four essential components of the ore-forming systems:1. sources of ore constituents2. crustal and mantle lithospheric architecture3. energy sources or drivers of the ore-forming systems4. gradients in ore depositional physico-chemical parameters.The results reveal several regions of Australia with potential for discovery of large tholeiitic intrusion-hosted nickel (PGE-Cu) sulfide deposits, mostly around the margins of Archean and Proterozoic lithospheric blocks. Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the &apos;fine&apos; and &apos;coarse&apos; size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: > Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery > Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery > Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for fine, and &apos;coarse&apos; particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

"The Montcalm concentrator operation was successfully commissioned in fall of 2004 at the Xstrata Copper’s Kidd Creek Metallurgical Site, Timmins. The start-up met or exceeded the Type 1 profile as defined by McNulty. Since the life-of-mine was estimated at seven years, concentrator optimisation endeavours had to be fast-tracked. These joint endeavours between the Kidd Creek Metallurgical Site staff and Xstrata Process Support were focussed on increasing ore treatment capacity and metallurgical performance. This paper reviews these endeavours. A flotation circuit survey, together with appropriate Process Mineralogy measurements, identified recovery opportunities in both locked and overground pentlandite in final tailings. The bypassing of first rougher concentrate directly to final concentrate was also recommended, given the composition of that stream. A subsequent grinding circuit survey identified a low circulating load due to poor classification performance. Modelling of these data suggested a change to the cyclone nest and pumping arrangements in the grinding circuit. Implementation of these recommendations has led to a 25% gain in milling circuit capacity as well as improved flotation circuit performance. These improvements amount to nickel and copper recovery gains of 2.57 and 1.83% respectively.INTRODUCTIONHistoryThe Montcalm Ni/Cu Ore is processed in a spare division of the Xstrata Copper’s Kidd Creek concentrator, located near Timmins in Northern Ontario. The flowsheet had been specified by earlier work, and the project fast-tracked so as to commission production operations into a time of rising nickel and copper prices. The Montcalm flow sheet starts with on-site ore crushing to - 19 mm. The crushed ore is trucked to the concentrator. This off-site crushing minimizes contamination with the Kidd Creek Cu/Zn ore. In the concentrator, rod and ball mill grinding to a target p80 of 39 µm produces the Rougher Flotation Feed. Flotation to Bulk Concentrate follows as Cu/Ni roughing and two stages of cleaning. Bulk concentrate is subjected to Cu/Ni separation using conventional column cells. Xanthate is the collector and MIBC is used as frother. Depramin C, a CMC (Carboxy Methyl Cellulose) is added to depress ferromagnesian silicates in the flotation process."

9K medium was used to isolate iron-oxidizing bacteria from 27 sump water samples collected from Dexing Cop-per Mine, Chengmen Mountain Mine and Yin Mountain Mine, Jiangxi Province, China. Lead acetate and silver nitrate were used to enrich metal-resistant iron-oxidizing bacteria from the above water samples. Isolate 16 was isolated from the sample taken at Dexing Copper Mine. Growth experiments indicated that when incubated under lead acetate (3,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation, while isolate H1, a less resistant strain taken at Yin Mountain Mine, had a tolerance level of only 400 mg/L. When assayed with other metals, i.e., Ag+ (240 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.9 mg/L), Cu2+ (32,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (22,500 mg/L), isolate 16 still carried out ferrous ion oxidation while, on the other hand, isolate H1 exhibited much lower tolerance levels, i.e., Ag+ (60 mg/L), Hg2+ (0.1 mg/L), Cu2+ (19,000 mg/L) and Mg2+ (13,500 mg/L). Based on 16S rDNA sequence data, isolate 16 and H1 were both identified as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans.

This paper describes operating gains resulting from standardizing operating and maintenance practices to improve the performance of the pebble crushing circuit at he Empire Concentrator. Past efforts have led to improved operating time but no additional throughput gains. New Operating standards and checklists were developed and introduced. The content and frequency of the review process indicators was then changed to take advantage of the new practices resulting in an increased feed rate and availability through the pebble crushing circuit.

The kinetics of the dissolution of colloidal silver in aerated cyanide solutions has been investigated with the aim of developing a relatively rapid and convenient method for monitoring the ?leaching power? of solutions typically used in the cyanidation process. Experimental results obtained are consistent with an electro-chemical model, in which the mixed potential is set up in the active region of the polarization curve for the anodic dissolution of silver, giving rise to a rate of dissolution which is controlled by the rate of mass transport of either cyanide or oxygen to the surface of the silver. The rate of dissolution of colloidal silver was found to respond to variations in the reactant concentrations in a similar manner to gold (and silver) in a typical free-milling ore. The use of this technique for the monitoring and control of the cyanide leach process is discussed.

"Due to depletion of the existing ore deposits the content of non-ferrous metals in produced ores has an inevitable tendency to decrease. Processing of low-grade ores is associated with production of low-grade selective concentrates and poses serious problems for the non-ferrous industry relating to increasing losses and expenses for waste treatment and disposal.The main component contaminating selective concentrates is iron sulphides.Copper-nickel, copper-zinc and polymetallic ores have been discussed as most important types of ores requiring removal of iron sulphides.One of the promising directions for development of selective flotation technology is the use of lowmolecular organic depressors. An advantage of organic compounds is in the possibility of multi-variant structure of organic molecules, which permits selection of a most efficient reagent for the given conditions. Another way for improving the grades of concentrates is concentration of valuable constituents associated with iron sulphides in an intermediate product and upgrading of the latter by chemical and metallurgical techniques.In order to remove iron from nickel concentrates, specific process conditions have been developed for selective flotation of pentlandite with the use of an organic depressor for pyrrhotite. The use of a depressor for flotation of high-grade copper-nickel ores ensures an increase in the nickel content up to 14% in the nickel concentrate produced as compared with 7% when using conventional process conditions, along with a nickel recovery improved by 2-3%."

Study on Desulfurisation and Deashing for Medium-High Sulfur Coal Using Shaking Table As important coal resources, medium- high sulfur accounts for a significant part of the coal reserve in China. The environmental regulations and fuel standard requires sulfur and ash to be removed before it is used, so as to save energy and decrease the emission. Therefore, the effective desulfurisation and deashing technologies are urgent needed. However, due to the local characteristics of the coal, specific technology with optimum operation parameters is required to develop for different local&nbsp;coal. Qinglong is a district of Guizhou Province, which has large medium to high sulfur contained coal reserve. In this paper, medium-high sulfur coal is sampled from Qinglong, Guizhou province. Some basic characteristics such as the mineralogical composition of the coal rock, the monomer existing state and the granulometric composition are determined by X-ray diffraction quantitative analysis and polarisation microscope analysis respectively. Adopting the classified feed method, shaking table tests show that the feed pulp concentration is 20 per cent, the stroke is 13mm, the frequency of the stroke is 380 per min, the cross slope is 3¦ and the volume of wash water is 5.2 L per min. Under such condition, aggregate processed coal yield is 72.87 per cent and sulfur content decrease to 1.31 per&nbsp;cent With shaking table technology of &apos;First stage rough and intermediate further fine benefication&apos;, the yield of concentrate coal increased from 72.87 per cent to 81.21 per cent, while the sulfur content reduced to 1.35 per cent.
