At New Zealand Steel MiningÆs Waikato North Head operation a Bucket Wheel Excavator û shiftable conveyor mining system is used to excavate titanomagnetite bearing sand and clay. The system utilises two Bucket Wheel Excavators and two Beltwagons with a two shiftable bench conveyors and two common trunk conveyors to deliver material to a processing plant. The original system was commissioned in 1984 as a high capacity, low cost method of excavating. In 1996 a second Beltwagon was purchased, increasing the flexibility of the mining system.

Laboratory and field tests during the past five years indicated considerable variation in the penetrating power of commercially available gun perforators. Many of the guns which achieved inadequate penetration in these tests have since been improved. However, recent productivity tests indicated the possibility of inadequate penetration or, at least, ineffective penetration in some wells. Laboratory experiments under simulated well conditions have demonstrated considerable plugging of the perforations, apparently as a result of factors associated with the shooting process and/or the drilling mud in the well at the time of perforating. The restrictions to flow per unit of hole depth caused by this plugging appears to be greater for jet perforators than for bullet guns of comparable diameter; however, because of the greater depth of penetration obtained with the jet guns, the total flow rates appear to he approximately equal. Limited testing with an experimental shaped charge suggests that less shot hole restriction and greater flow rates may result from larger-diameter perforations or other factors related to charge design. INTRODUCTION Gun perforating has been accepted for a number of years as a routine well completion method which is often preferred since it permits more selective operation of producing zones. Nevertheless, questions have continued to arise as to the effectiveness of the communication paths established between the productive formation and the interior of the casing. The basis for these questions has generally been failure to obtain anticipated fluid production rates through gun perforated completions in specific wells. These low productivities, together with the frequent recovery of bullets from well bores, were considered strong evidence of inadequate penetration. Laboratory investigations of the penetration performance of many of the bullet guns available as late as 1948 gave support to these indications. Subsequent electrical analog studiesl,2,3 indicated that the depth of penetration required to provide productivities equivalent to open hole was beyond the capacity of most bullet perforators evaluated in the early laboratory penetration tests. These results, together with the advent of the shaped charge in the field of oil well perforating, stimulated the interest of both oil operators and service companies in gun development. Improvements in gun design resulted in jet and bullet guns which appeared to be capable of providing sufficient penetration for most perforating jobs. However, some wells failed to yield satisfactory fluid production even after being perforated with the more powerful guns, again raising the question as to the effectiveness of the perforating operation. This fact, together with preliminary shooting into targets prepared with formation cores, indicated that factors associated with the perforating process and/or the fluids in the well bore at the time of shooting may reduce effective formation penetration and thereby decrease well productivity. These laboratory and field data prompted another phase in the investigation of the effectiveness of gun perforating: a program to determine the extent and seriousness of perforation plugging under simulated well conditions.

The South African mining industry continues to be a major source of employment at a time when at least 25 per cent of the working age population is unemployed. At the same time the industry faces a skills shortage in many of the disciplines necessary for its future health. The University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg, and University of South Africa have historically produced mining graduates for the South African mining industry with any shortfall being met by the recruitment of overseas graduates. More recently, the global shortage of engineers and other mining industry professionals has seen a reversal of this trend and a very significant emigration of well-educated and highly skilled personnel. The traditional career path for mining graduates is in production and mine management. However, there is the parallel (and possibly more pressing) need for specialized skills in such fields as ventilation, rock engineering, mine planning, mineral resource evaluation, and mineral asset valuation. Chronic shortages in these essential areas continue to hamper the development of the industry and may well frustrate its ambitions to be safe, healthy, and profitable into the future. The permeability of skills across sectorial boundaries within the mining industry requires that skills shortages in the platinum sector are not looked at in isolation, but within the context of the entire industry. This paper reviews the efforts being made by the universities, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to meet the needs of the South African mining industry in terms of the required numbers and the range of specialized skills.

A research project was commissioned by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) to improve the understanding of tailgate strata mechanics and to provide a more rigorous engineering basis for tailgate support design. A deformation mechanism termed æskew roofÆ was defined which relates the regional influence of differential horizontal strata movement (shear) about longwall extraction to gateroads. Confirmation of the mechanism was achieved by field investigations which included measurement of the shear displacement along weak interfaces. Under geological and mining conditions where the skew roof mechanism operated, strata units were found to move progressively further towards the goaf with height into the roof. 3D numerical modelling was used to assess the major geotechnical factors controlling the mechanism and to determine appropriate support strategies within a æskew roofÆ environment including the role of cables versus standing supports. The skew mechanism is considered relevant to; all roadways in the vicinity of longwall extraction including the faceline itself, chain pillar design, and support design.

Currently, the Bear Canyon Mine is facing the challenge of excessively high coal and rock temperatures in one of its headings. In Mine No.3, the air temperature at the 6th Right panel reached 36.4ºC and the coal 83.9 ºC. Due to these severe work conditions, the mining plan has been altered by changing the mine direction to avoid the high temperatures. To investigate the problem, drill holes were developed from the entries and the rock temperatures monitored using K-type thermocouples. The measurements confirmed the existence of localized “hot spots” in the mine. This paper presents a summary of ventilation surveys that were conducted in this mine. It includes the results of coal and rock temperature measurements from drill holes, interpretation of results using a heat flow simulator and the identification of hot spot areas. It also includes a summary of methods that were developed to reduce the hazard and control the problem.

"The results and methodology for the optimisation of the zinc flotation circuit at the Matagami Mill using the 6-Sigma methodology are shown in detail while only the base line and final results are presented for the copper circuit. As a result of the six sigma project, the zinc concentrate grade was improved by 2% and the zinc recovery by 3%, with reduced dosage of reagents while the copper concentrate was improved by 2.4%. The process variation in the zinc concentrate grade and recovery was also reduced by over 50%. The main factors contributing to the project success were identified to be improvement in the plant measurement systems, an internal benchmarking exercise and statistically designed laboratory and in plant tests to guide the process improvement. The annual value to Noranda resulting from this project has been estimated at approximately $5 million.INTRODUCTIONThe Matagami concentrator started ore processing from the new Bell- Allard deposit in July 1999. Concentrator performance (grade and recovery of zinc and copper concentrates) was highly variable and work was ongoing to fix the sources of variation. In the mean time, Noranda embarked on its 6-Sigma initiative across the company. The 6-Sigma DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control) methodology was used in the two flotation circuits to reduce variation and improve performance. The statistical 6-Sigma methodology moves towards identifying and controlling critical process operating variables (the X' s) to achieve customerspecified performance (the Y's). The goal of the methodology is to describe a process in a numerical equation known as the transfer function, given as Y = f (XI, X2, X3.. .), where Y could be concentrate grade or recovery and examples of X's are reagent dosage, particle size, etc. With the transfer function, optimal operating conditions and control tolerances are established for the key X's to ensure the desired Y performance is obtained.Each phase of the 6-Sigma methodology is explained below with examples from the Matagami project."

This paper is based on a project conducted at Khomanani 2 shaft, Anglo American Platinum Limited. The main objective was to find an alternative support element in stopes to address the falls of ground (FOG) problem experienced at this shaft. Literature review was the major method used in the investigations. Resin bolts or any 1.5 m in-stope roofbolts were considered. The shaft was making use of 0.9 m long friction bolts, and these could not prevent the FOG experienced. Observations indicated that the FOG resulted in fall-out thicknesses averaging to 1.1 m, which is greater than the supported length of the friction bolts. The implementation of 1.5 m long bolts was recommended as a result of the project. These bolts will be able to address the fall-out thickness and provide sufficient support resistance to mitigate FOG. The chosen support element will result in a relatively small increase in support costs.

Rock engineering research and technology development in South Africa only received serious attention in reaction to the Coalbrook disaster in 1960. At the time, a number of gaps in knowledge of rock related matters were identified and in the ensuing years, these were progressively attended to. The paper describes the events that led up to the Coalbrook disaster and reviews the developments that took place afterwards. The effectiveness of the research outcomes are tested by referring back to the disaster. It is concluded that tremendous advances were made but that not all the unknowns were attended to at the same level. The strength of nominally square internal pillars is the one issue that received the most attention, but the strength of barrier pillars, overburden behaviour and loading systems are still largely unknown. Due to the complexity of the remaining unknowns, they can and should be addressed by the application of back calibrated numerical models. There are no readily available simple analytical solutions. The state of mining rock engineering research in South Africa borders on an emergency. More than a 1000 years of aggregate research experience has been lost in the last three years and funding is under severe pressure. There are disturbing parallels between the current positioning of the industry as a whole and the Coalbrook mine in the years preceding the disaster.

Risk management is an established loss-control methodology that has been applied successfully in many industries. Recently, interest in this structured approach has grown in the mining industry. The main objective of this research was to develop a risk-assessment process, which is a part of risk management, that can be used by the U.S. mining industry to more thoroughly characterize risks associated with haul truck-related fatalities. The assessment is based on historical data obtained from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) investigation reports, which includes 113 fatal incidents that occurred from 1995 through 2006. The risk-assessment process used in this research involves the following basic steps: identification of the risks, risk analysis and risk evaluation. The preliminary hazard assessment (PHA) method is used in identifying and quantifying risks. Risk levels are then developed using a pre-established risk matrix that ranks them according to probability and severity. The resulting assigned risk value can then be used to prioritize control strategies. This paper is a part of a detailed study on risk assessment for equipment-related fatalities in mining sponsored by the Western U.S. Mining Safety and Health Training and Translation Center.

In experiments for the production of steel the principal problem has always been the introduction into, or removal from, the iron of a definite quantity of carbon. Although the solution of this problem had engaged a more or less blindly and empirically directed effort for a long time, it was only with the development of analytical chemistry that the rôle which carbon plays in the constitution of steel was disclosed in its full significance, and that many of the problems confronting the steel-maker were thereby more clearly defined than before. For a long time, and to a certain extent even to this day, the percentage of carbon in steel has been the controlling means of deter mining its quality and hardness. In many cases the percentage of carbon alone has been relied on for judging large consignments, such as the large deliveries of wire-billets and blooms to America during the past twenty years; and though to-day the influences of the other constituents are recognized and many other considerations are taken into account, and though, moreover, some special steels, such as the Hadfield manganese steel, apparently dispense to a certain extent with the assistance of the carbon, yet fix our Bessemer, Thomas, Siemens and crucible steel the carbon still remains one of the most important constituents, and I venture to say it is indispensable. In order to produce in the Bessemer converter a steel of a certain required percentage of carbon, two methods, as is well known, present themselves. Problem statement: One of the most challenging safety problems in room-and-pillar coalmines is controlling roof falls during retreat mining. Roof falls not only cause both fatal and non-fatal injuries to miners, stoppages in mining operations, and equipment breakdowns, but also results in the inefficient recovery of coal reserves. Approach: Sufficient awareness of effective parameters related to roof falls is an important factor in roof control. In this study, the major contributing parameters on roof falls during retreat mining are introduced based upon experience and judgment acquired from extensive retreat mining case histories and a review of relevant literature. Key findings: The main roof fall parameters in retreat mining can be divided into three categories: geological, design, and operational. Key conclusions: The design and operational parameters can be controlled by the engineer and/or operator. By the appropriate selection of these parameters in the design and implementation stages of retreat mining, the roof fall risk can be decreased to an acceptable extent.

The advent of low-quality export coal demand has brought a new range of possibilities to the South African coal industry. Products that traditionally were only of value to the domestic or combustion industry sectors now have the potential to be exported, with only minor amounts of upgrading required through beneficiation. Comparatively high steam-coal export prices can be obtained for lowquality export coal, which enhances the economic feasibility of expanding low-quality thermal coal exports. There are, however, increasing concerns about the feasibility of lower quality thermal coal exports and the broader implications. These concerns relate to the environmental impact of low-quality thermal coal production for export and the inherent threat to the security of domestic thermal coal supply in South Africa. Against this background, this paper serves to explain the extended value chain in the production of export coal. The technical and economic advantages and disadvantages of low-grade exports versus coal production for domestic use are evaluated. The value chain estimation is calculated by the beneficiation modelling and characterization of two coals. Based on the value estimation, the lowgrade export production scenario, and finally the modelling of potential pollutant distribution, are described. The oxidation of structural materials at high temperatures in gas-cooled systems can be greatly retarded by the addition of small amounts of hydrogen to the inert coolant. In experimental equipment for gasifying coal with heat transferred by helium, the oxidation of graphite and metals (molybdenum, tungsten, and certain stainless steels) by trace impurities in the coolant helium was virtually eliminated by adding 0.1 to 1.0 percent hydrogen. The reaction of hydrogen with praphite does not preclude its use to retard oxidation; at 2,400° F. only 0.2 pound of graphite per square foot per year is lost for each percent of hydrogen in the helium. The addition of hydrogen appeared to prevent the mass transfer of carbon often associated with oxidation of graphite, without causing noticeable embrittlement of stainless steels and molybdenum or other damaging effects. This method has been tested in precision gas-recycle systems and applied successfully for more than a year in a pilot-scale unit operating at 250 pounds per square inch gage and 2,400° F. It is now used routinely and can be applied to many gas-cooled systems operating at high temperatures.

"A graphical method to assess the size reduction by grinding is presented and illustrated with data collected from laboratory grinding tests and industrial grinding circuits. The method lies between the graphical comparison of size distributions and the population balance model. The method is easy to apply and provides a quick way to compare grinding mill performances under various operating conditions and processed ores. The application of the method to industrial mills shows that a grinding mill operation could present an invariant behaviour that can be exploited for simulation purposes.INTRODUCTIONThe size reduction of particles by grinding has been studied for decades and several books were published on the subject. Most of the recent studies focus on the modelling of the ball, semiautogenous and autogenous grinding mills operation (Napier-Munn et al., 1996) because accurate simulators can be used for design, optimization and control. Although the development of realistic simulators is progressing, the trial and error method is still used by many operators to identify optimum operating conditions for a grinding machine.Laboratory tests allow the characterization of the material submitted to grinding and the analysis of various operating conditions, such as ball size or shape, mill speed and slurry concentration of solids, on particle size reduction. Similar tests can be conducted in a plant, but results are often difficult to analyze due to errors associated with sampling and sensor accuracy. This paper presents a graphical method to assess the degree of size reduction carried out by a grinding machine. The paper consists of three sections. The first section describes the method and the following sections illustrate the method with data taken from laboratory and industrial grinding machines."
