"IntroductionHydraulics has been considered a science for thousands of years. Applications included water wheels, dam; and slice gates but today the term ""hydraulics"" commonly refers to ""power hydraulics"" in which fluid is used under controlled pressure to do work. The mining industry employee’s hydraulics in practically every aspect of its operations, on such equipment as trucks, front end loaders, LHD units, crushers and hydrostroke feeders. The many benefits of hydraulic drives such as ease of variable speed control, high power: weight ratio low envelope size of hydraulic actuators and ease of maintenance have been extensively developed in the pulp and paper, chemical, steel, and other basic industries, but until quite recently, concentrator operators have not taken advantage of the versatile methods of power transmission offered by hydraulic systems.After some preliminary testing at the Lynn Lake concentrator Sherritt Cordon Mines Limited installed several hydraulic system; at their Fox Mine concentrator to drive slurry pumps and conveyors. The systems used at Fox and the systems which will be installed at the Ruttan concentrator are briefly described in this paper. Since acceptance is based mainly on understanding a few basic principles of hydraulics system; including pumps, motors, circuitry and central methods are also presented in the paper.PRINCIPLES OF POWER HYDRAULICSBasicsHydraulic systems provide an uncomplicated, versatile means of power transmission. Gold-silver mineralised veins at Favona, represent a new low-sulfidation epithermal vein discovery that occurs less than 1 km southeast of the world-class Waihi deposit. The Favona vein is hosted in Late Miocene andesitic lava flows and local dacitic tuffs that are intensely altered to quartz, adularia, chlorite, illite or interstratified illite-smectite (with ten to 70 per cent smectite) and pyrite. Adularia is widespread and envelops the veins, whereas chlorite and illite are mostly restricted to the footwall, and illite-smectite is confined to the hanging wall of the Favona vein. At shallow levels, kaolinite, cristobalite and rare alunite overprint the above minerals. A polymict hydrothermal breccia also occurs above and in the hanging wall of the Favona vein and contains clasts of altered andesite and various quartz vein fragments. Fluid inclusions in quartz veins sampled over a 300 m vertical interval have a homogenisation temperature range of 175¦ to 266¦C and dilute apparent salinities of 220¦C and grading into illite-smectite and local smectite which formed at 2. In contrast, late kaolinite, cristobalite and alunite formed from descending steam-heated acid-sulfate waters. Overall, the Favona and Waihi deposits are interpreted to have formed at similar levels in a single low relief hydrothermal system, with each deposit representing a distinct zone of fluid upflow.

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993 (original title: Knowledge-based condition monitoring of cone crushers). A large proportion of the electricity used by the quarrying industry is consumed in the comminution and sizing process. In most cases aggregate processing plants operate with minimum control features resulting in limited operational efficiency. Improved control is required to increase operational efficiency with concomitant savings associated with reduction in re-circulating load and improved resource utilisation. Development work has suggested that a combination of adaptive control and process condition monitoring could improve control of comminution plants. Many commercial process control and condition monitoring systems are available, but none were deemed suitable due to the domain specific characteristics of the application. An assessment of the particular characteristics of cone crushing concluded that the application was best suited to the use of small domain specific process control combined with bespoke condition monitoring. The processing power of the control system for the project is a function not of the academic requirement, but rather the economic and practical constraints imposed by the application. As a result of the constraints a high-end PC system has been designed in preference to a workstation. Within the research project work packages are sub-divided into novel wear sensor development, knowledge based control/condition monitoring and the investigation and mathematical modelling of the wear mechanisms inherent in cone crushing. Numerous strategies were considered to implement the control system outlined. The system currently under development is a modular design which utilises intelligent novel sensors to provide a variety of data inputs

The SnO2/CdS/CdTe thin film solar cells were fabricated on glass substrates by using the spray pyrolysis (SP) technique for the deposition of the SnO2 and CdS layers and vacuum evaporation for the CdTe layer. The transmittance curves were used to investigate the interdiffusion in the two interfacial regions SnO2/CdS and CdS/CdTe by taking the first derivative of the absorbance as a function of wavelength. The appearance of new bandgaps around the bandgaps of SnO2:F, CdS:In and CdTe layers is a strong evidence on the interdiffusion in the two interfacial regions and/or the formation of quantum dots.

"SynopsisThe Kanichee open pit mine and milling complex is situated approximately four air miles north-west of Ternagami, Northern Ontario, in Strathy Township. Mining and milling production commenced in January 1974.Milling throughput currently is at a rated capacity of 500 tons per day, seven days per week. A bulk nickel-copper sulphide concentrate is produced, and is trucked daily to the smelter at Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, Falconbridge, Ontario, some 120 road miles from Kanichee. Concentrate grades produced are in the order of 4.0% Ni and 8.0% Cu, with corresponding recoveries of 68-70% nickel and 86-90% copper. Stage additions of 100% guar-gurn solution reagent to the flotation cells for depression of talcose minerals, proved to be the major break-through for optimizing metallurgical performance.2. HistoryThe present Kanichee Mining property is known to old-timers in the Temagami area as the former Cuniptau Mine. Several attempts were made in the mid '30's and 40's to extract the ore at a profit, but each effort resulted in failure.In 1933-36, Cuniptau Mines Development Co. Limited, later called Cuniptau Mines Limited, sank a 245-foot vertical shaft and completed 2,200 feet of lateral work on the 100-140 and the 225 foot levels. Fifteen tons of ore were sent for testwork to the Mines Branch, Ottawa, Ontario.Cuniptau Mines Limited, in 1936, milled some 3,000 tons, and the resulting concentrate was put through a pilot smelter situated on the present mine site. Metallurgically, the smelting results were not encouraging, primarily due to the high melting point of the talcose minerals in the concentrate. From the period 1937-48, minor exploration work was done by Ontario Mining Corporation, Ontario Nickel Mines Limited, and Trebor Mines Limited. During the period 1948-49, 128 diamond drill holes, totalling 40,900 feet were evaluated by Trebor Mines Limited. In 1961, the name was changed to Ajax Minerals Limited, during 1968, five diamond drill holes were sunk, totalling 1,700 feet. Since that period the property has remained idle."

Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Anglo Base Metals Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa. The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. The smelting process comprises the carbonaceous reduction of ilmenite to produce titania slag with a TiO2 content of 86%, and iron with a carbon content of 2.5%. The Namakwa Sands smelter, situated near the Saldanha Bay harbour, commenced smelting operations in 1994, when a 25 MW DC-arc furnace was commissioned. The smelting operations were expanded in 1999, with the commissioning of a second 35 MW DC-arc furnace. Despite the fact that ilmenite smelting poses a technical challenge in terms of the high temperatures required, the physical characteristics of the slag, the constraints placed on the feedstock, and the tight product specifications, Namakwa Sands has continually increased slag production since 1995. High furnace feed-on utilization and furnace stability, complemented by continuous improvement drives, will be thevehicle to drive performance in the short-term, with longer-term performance enhancements due to strategic process development. Column flotation has been successfully implemented on a production scale in the Athabasca oil sands. In this application, bitumen is recovered and mineral matter is simultaneously rejected from a middling stream originating from a primary separation vessel. Exploiting the natural hydrophobicity of bitumen, the middlings streams have traditionally been processed utilizing conventional, mechanical flotation cells. Although these cells offer adequate bitumen recovery and mineral rejection rates, operating costs are high due to the required maintenance of the wetted mechanical components. In comparison, column flotation provides superior metallurgical performance while offering a lower maintenance demand. Both metallurgical and mechanical characteristics of column flotation are discussed to demonstrate the benefits of this technology for the recovery of bitumen from oil sands.

Investigations were undertaken to assess the suitability of CSIROflotation methods for improving the efficiency of separation of heavyminerals in the monazite circuit at the Westralian Sands Limitedoperations at Capel, Western Australia. Flotation work was conducted on two plant samples. The first was a high-titanium product containing considerable amounts of zircon and silica as quartz and aluminosilicates, and the second was a low monazite/zircon material containing high levels of silica. A three-stage process including reverse flotation was developed totreat the first sample. In this process monazite, zircon, quartz, andaluminosilicates were selectively concentrated by flotation and screening to produce a titanium-rich product. In the first stage, an acid amine float, monazite, zircon, and some non-zircon silica were recovered and in the second stage, an alkaline amine float using a fluoride activator, more quartz and staurolite were floated. The titanium minerals were thus concentrated in the unfloated fraction. In the third stage, the titanium-rich flotation tail was screened at 250 ¦m to remove the remaining coarse aluminosilicates. In a single pass, the three-stage process yielded a TiO2 recovery of 64.0 per cent with the titanium-rich product assaying 70.3 per cent TiO2.

Slat-band chains, currently manufactured from Type 430 ferritic stainless steel, are used as conveyors in various industries. A process to strengthen these chains?with the aim of prolonging the lifetime of the conveyors?was developed recently. The process entails heat treating the cold-worked chain at 475°C,strengthening the material by precipitation of the Cr-rich phase a? at relatively long periods of aging. In the present work, it was found that increasing the interstitial content by solution heat treatments (at 880°C or 930°C) prior to cold rolling and aging, causes an increase in strength at shorter aging times as a result of the precipitation of chromium-rich carbides and nitrides. The solution treatments can introduce martensite into the microstructure if carried out at a sufficiently high temperature. This, along with the deformation caused by cold work, also increases the strength. Corrosion resistance is not affected by the treatments, but ductility is lowered. However, calculated critical crack lengths indicate that solution treatment at a temperature below the Ac1allows for a larger critical flaw size, and that the lifetime of the chains will probably be determined by fatigue. Although the duration of the service of the chains are reportedly controlled by wear, with these treatments the tensile strength of the material is increased to within acceptable limits for conveyor chains. The tensile strength is an indication of the wear or abrasion resistance of a material. It is expected that after the treatments, the wear resistance will be improved, but since embrittlement occurs, the fatigue resistance is lowered. It is concluded that the preferred processing route for the chains would be solution treatment at 880°C, fast quenching to trap the interstitial atoms, cold rolling and then aging at 475°C for 8 minutes.

Strainbursts are common in overstressed brittle rock around deep mine openings. Such failures are characterized by a biaxial state of stress in the plane of the opening boundary. A zone of compressive stresses imposes initial failures near or at the surface of the opening that results in spalling of thin slabs of rock roughly parallel to the free face. While the failure of rock under biaxial loading conditions is increasingly common in deep underground mines, only a few representative laboratory studies have been reported in the literature, without emphasis on rockbursting aspects, and none in the last decade. This paper presents the results of a testing program on a granite rock type. Biaxial testing, conducted on 100 mm cubic samples, was carried out to examine the influence of lateral confinement and loading rate on the rock’s ultimate strength. The paper reports the test results in terms of normalized biaxial failure envelope s1/sc-s2/sc. A discussion of the failure mechanisms observed is presented. De telles ruptures sont caractérisées par un état de contraintes biaxiales dans le plan de la périphérie de l’ouverture. Une zone de contraintes compressives impose des ruptures initiales à ou près de la surface de l’ouverture, qui produit des relâchements de minces plaques de roc plus ou moins parallel à la surface. Bien que les ruptures de roc sous des conditions biaxiales sont de plus en plus communes dans les mines à grandes profondeurs, il n’y a eu que quelques études représentatives en laboratoire de publiées, sans emphase sur des aspects de coups de terrains, et aucunes publiées depuis la dernière décennie. L’article présente les résultats d’une campagne d’essais appliquée à un type de granit. La campagne d’essais biaxiaux, sur des échantillons cubiques de 100 mm, avait pour objectif d’examiner l’influence du confinement latéral et le taux de chargement sur la résistance ultime du roc. Cet article fait part des résultats en terme de l’enveloppe de rupture biaxiale normalisée s1/sc-s2/sc. Une discussion sur les mécanismes de ruptures observés est présentée. Dehnungsbrüche findet man häufig in übergespannten spröden Felsen um die Öffnung von tiefen Minen. Solche Brüche sind von einer zweiachsigen Spannung in der Ebene der Grenze der Öffnung charakterisiert. Eine Zone von Druckspannungen verursacht initiale Brüche, entweder an der Öberflache der Öffnung oder in der Nähe. Davon scheiden sich dünne Felsplatten mehr oder weniger parallele mit der freien Wand. Obwohl Felsbrüche unter zweiachsiger Beanspruchung immer mehr häufig in tiefen Minen beobachtet sind, hat man über nur einige repräsentative Laborversuche in der Literatur berichtet. Diese Studien diskutieren das Thema ohne Betonung auf Felsbrüchen, und keine sind in den letzten zehn Jahren erschienen. Die vorliegene Arbeit gibt die Ergebnisse eines Testprogramms auf einem Typ von Granitfels. Durch zweiachsige Prüfungen von kubischen Proben mit Seitenlangen von 100 mm sollte man den Einfluss von seitlicher Ermittlung und der Beanspruchungsrate auf die Bruchfestigkeit des Felsen studieren. Man findet auch die Prüfergebnisse in bezug auf das normalisierte, zweiachsige Bruchkriterium s1/sc-s2/sc. Die beobachteten Bruchmechanismen sind auch diskutiert.

A large number of brittleness concepts have been used in very different studies in the literature. One of them is the B1brittleness concept. In this study, the objective is to criticize the B1 brittleness concept on rotary blast hole drills. The B1 brittleness concept, the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength (sc) to tensile strength (sT), are widely used as a rock brittleness concept in the literature (Inyangand Pitt, 1990; Verhoef, P.N.W. 1993; Neil, D.M. et al.1994;Becker, et al.1984; Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Göktan, R.M.1992; Kahraman, S. 2001; Yamaguchi, U. 1970; Verhoef, P.N.W. et al.1996; Bilgin, 1982; Howarth and Rowlands,1987; Howarth, D.F. et al. 1986). So, it was used as a rock brittleness concept in this article. The value of the B1brittleness concept is equal to the tangent of ß angle in the following graph. It was seen that more meaningful relationships could be obtained with the B2 brittleness, the under ?Area?(= 1/2(scxsT) = B2) under the curve, instead of tangent ß, (=B1), of the curve.

"The size of mills driven by ring-gear or by a gearless solution has significantly increased in the last years. This has created additional challenges for the driven equipment. The requirements for the mechanical devices and the power grid have become more demanding. Controlled soft starting and operation, especially in dual pinion mills, as well as the protection of the equipment has gained importance. The selection of the drive solution for the mill therefore becomes more critical. Besides the classical criteria such as performance, efficiency and capital costs other factors come in the evaluation of the system such as flexibility and optimization of operation, reliability and the ageing of the grinding equipment.Variable speed solutions offer significant advantages over conventional fixed speed drives due to their application specific features and process optimization capabilities, even for ball mills where these are not seen yet as a must.The initial capital costs are higher than some of the direct on-line solutions however the benefits for the operation during the lifetime of the mill generated by the use of converter solutions justify the additional higher investment.INTRODUCTIONThe method of powering mills such as AG, SAG and Ball has a long and technically interesting history. It can be said; almost every decade in the last half century had its own trend. The trend was dominated by the market demand, by the process development and requirement of the mechanical and the electrical technology but mostly by the price of the applied technology.All has started about 50 years ago with mill diameters less than 20 feet driven by fix speed synchronous or wound rotor motors with the power of about 2 MW. Around 10 years later, the mill sizes increased, but the necessary torque could not be transmitted by one pinion therefore dual pinion solutions were developed to power the mills. However, realization of the dual pinion solution was only possible when load could be evenly shared between the two pinions."

The Camp Dresser & McKee (CDM)/Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) joint venture has been engaged by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) to provide engineering ser-vices in connection with the replacement of two existing siphons which cross New York Harbor between Staten Island and Brooklyn. The project involves the construction of a 72-inch diameter pipeline within a 12-foot diameter tunnel beneath the New York Harbor. The tunnel will be constructed using either slurry or an earth pressure balanced (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM). This paper presents the results of an extensive geotechnical field and laboratory testing program including advanced frozen soil tests (uniaxial compressive strength tests, triaxial tests, and uniaxial creep tests), in-situ vane shear and pressure meter testing, and a marine geophysical survey (seismic reflection technique) to ascertain the complex subsurface conditions along the tunnel alignment and shaft locations. The paper will also discuss the design and construction aspects and the challenges associated with each component of this project.

The dewatering of stable phosphatic clay suspensions generated from phosphate beneficiation in the central Florida is an issue of practical and theoretical importance. Because of its tiny particle size and surface charge, the phosphatic clay takes up to 20-30 years to settle in water and causes environmental, aesthetic, economic, and handling problems. An efficient and cost-effective dewatering/consolidation process for phosphatic clay is of great interest to the phosphate industry in Florida. In this paper, the consolidation and dewatering behavior of phosphatic clay was studied by use of anionic flocculants with and without sand addition. The effects of pH, initial polymer concentration, polymer dosage, polymer addition steps, and metal cations (K+, Ca2+, and Al3+) on the flocculation of phosphatic clay have been studied. Experimental results indicated that clay suspensions were well flocculated at pH 10.5 by DPW-1-1355 and Magnafloc 5250 flocculants acquired from Ciba Specialty Chemicals. Sand particles from phosphate flotation added to the clay slurry promoted flocculation and increased clay consolidation. K+ showed good performance to improve the flocculation characteristics by neutralizing clay surface charge. The adsorption mechanisms of flocculants on clay particles were also discussed in this paper.

ABSTRACT: In this paper, the stability evaluation and bifurcation criteria are presented for the Jinping arch dam structure. The bifurcation models in failure status of the arch dam are derived from the uniqueness of the controlling equation of dam behaviours, and the relative phenomena between positive definition of dam structural tangent stiffness and bifurcation are given in the paper. Then the structural collapse criteria for arch dam are discussed based on the energy mode. A stability criterion of dam based on the connection of yield zones is proposed according to the implementation of elasto-plastic FEM (finite element method) numerical analysis. In accordance with this judging method, nonlinear FEM analysis is used for Jinping arch dam. The failure process of the Jinping dam was simulated and yield zones were found under the overloading condition. In der Vorliegenden Arbeit wird eine dreidimensionale finite element analyse fuer die seitlichen. Gestein sauflager mittels dem Bruchmodell Vorgestellt, da fuer Jiniping Bogenstaumauer angewandet wird. Ein Bruch mechanismus model einschliesslich der statistischen parameter der Gesteinfes tigkeit wird entauckeit. Multiple seam interactions are a major ground control hazard in many U.S. underground coal mines. The two most common types are: ? Undermining, where stress concentrations caused by previous full extraction in an overlying seam is the primary concern, and; ? Overmining, where previous full extraction in an underlying seam can result in stress concentrations and rock damage from subsidence. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has completed a major study aimed at helping to identify the location and likely severity of these interactions. In the course of field visits to mines throughout the U.S., more than 300 multiple seam case histories were assembled into the largest data base of multiple seam case histories ever collected. These data were analyzed with the multivariate statistical technique of logistic regression. The study also employed LaM2D to estimate the multiple seam stresses, ALPS and ARMPS to determine pillar stability factors, and the CMRR to measure roof quality. The study resulted in the development of a computer program, called Analysis of Multiple Seam Stability (AMSS), which can help mine planners to evaluate each potential interaction and take steps to reduce the risk of ground control failure. AMSS first evaluates pillar design by calculating the single seam Stability Factor (SFSS) using ALPS or ARMPS. It also automatically generates a LaM2D analysis that provides the additional multiple seam stress so that the final, multiple seam SFMS can be determined. The second part of the AMSS procedure builds upon the statistical findings that overmining is much more difficult than undermining, isolated remnant pillars cause more problems than gob-solid boundaries, and weaker roof significantly increases the risk of multiple seam interactions. AMSS quantifies these effects and predicts the outcome in terms of three levels of risk: GREEN (where a major multiple seam interaction is considered unlikely), YELLOW (where adding a pattern of cable bolts or other equivalent supplemental support could greatly reduce the probability of a major interaction.), or RED (a major interaction should be considered likely, and it may be desirable to avoid the area entirely).

Through 1996 and 1997, CANMET and the Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) conducted a project to study the Phalen Mine’s 7 East longwall ventilation network to help determine methane emission patterns that were having a negative impact on coal production. Increased methane emissions were primarily related to mining depth and were also affected by the influence of a large sandstone body located above the worked seam. The research included the installation of tube bundle systems to monitor waste (gob) methane and pressure differentials. The focus of this paper is on the novel use of tracer gas techniques that helped shed light on the performance of the ventilation system and in determining the methane migration paths in the waste.
