In this article, Beth Robinson, a graduate student at Colorado School of Mines, describes trip organizers, participants, and some of the unique events occurring during the two-week excursion. Next month, part two of the series will highlight various Mexican mines and plants.

Shear-flow coupling tests are conducted using an original apparatus, and a shear-flow coupling model using Geographic Information System (GIS) is developed in order to evaluate shear-flow coupling properties of a rock joint. Shear-flow coupling tests indicate that the hydraulic conductivity of joint once decreases, and then rapidly increases at the shear displacement near the peak shear stress. The proposed model simulates the test results relatively well. However it indicates that it is difficult to apply the local ‘cubic law’ model in the initial shear stage, in which the change of selective flow path is remarkable. Scher-Fliess-Kopplungsversuche werden mit einem neuartigen Versuchsgerät durchgeführt und mithilfe von Geo-Informationssystemen (GIS) gedeutet, um so ein Modell für die Scher-Fliess-Kopplung in Gebirgstrennflächen zu entwickeln. Die Versuche zeigen, dass die hydraulische Leitfähigkeit zuerst abnimmt, dann aber schnell wieder zunimmt sobald die maximale Scherfestigkeit erreicht ist. Das vorgestellte Modell bildet die Testergebnisse relativ gut nach. Es zeigt auch, dass es schwierig ist, das lokale Cubic Law im Initialstadium der Scherbeanspruchung anzuwenden, in dem die Variationen selektiver Fliesswege gross ist. Les essaies hydro-mécaniques couplés en cisaillement sont réalisés grâce à un appareil éxperimental prototype et un modèle de couplage hydro-mécanique utilisant le S.I.G (systeme d'information géographique) développé dans le but d'évaluer les propriétés hydro-mécaniques des joint rocheux. Les résultats indiquent que la conductivité hydraulique des joints décroit puis augmente rapidement en se rapprochant du pic de cisaillement. Le modèle proposé simule relativement bien les résultats expérimentaux ; mais indique également qu’il est difficile d’appliquer localement la loi cubique au début du cisaillement où, les changements d’orientation dans le réseau d'écoulement sont considerables.

In surface mining operations, ultra-heavy trucks operate on haul road networks which are typically from 10?40 km in length. These road networks are often not optimally designed and maintained and as a result, identifying and remediating road functional defects is problematic. Most surface mine operators agree good roads are desirable, but find it difficult to translate this into an effective road maintenance system. This paper presents a haul road maintenance management system which utilizes an assessment of rolling resistance based on a functional performance evaluation of a haul road, together with mine haul truck operating cost models to derive the optimal frequency of road maintenance. A typical application is presented which illustrates the potential of the technique to manage maintenance as and where needed with resultant reduction in total road user costs and an improvement in service provided for the road user. A mathematical model to represent the expansion and fragmentation of copper matte particles oxidized under flash converting conditions is presented. The model assumes that the particles are initially nonporous, have a constant mass prior to fragmentation and travel at a constant velocity throughout the reaction chamber. The model requires the specification of the following five parameters: the particle expansion rate, a fragmentation diameter factor, a fragmentation size distribution parameter and the fractions of the finest and the coarsest particles in the feed that undergo fragmentation. The model predictions show good agreement with the experimental data collected in a laboratory furnace over a wide range of experimental conditions. The evolution of the size distribution of the particles along the reactor length was computed, and the model parameters were correlated with the experimental operating variables. Model predictions indicate that particle residence time is an important factor in the generation of dust. The presence of two maxima in the particle density function may be attributed to turbulent conditions prevailing in the furnace, which cause particles to follow different trajectories within the furnace even if they are injected at the same location.

"Sheet piles remain an economic solution to many shoring problems. However, installation of sheet piling suffers high noise and vibration with conventional impact or vibratory methods or low production and high expense with push techniques. Many projects simply will not allow sheet piling due to vibration concerns.Installing sheet piles with a tunable, high frequency Resonant vibrator provides high production with imperceptible ground vibrations. Recent projects in Canada have proven the technique on production projects where vibration sensitive structures are present immediately adjacent to the sheet piling. A project in Whitehorse, Yukon required a Waterloo style impervious sheet pile barrier be driven immediately adjacent to a sensitive, large diameter sewer line. The 1800 m2 Waterloo barrier was driven to prevent hydrocarbon leachate from entering the Yukon River. Proposed driving of the sheet raised concerned as the sewer serviced downtown Whitehorse. Monitoring of the sewer during Resonant driving proved the ground vibrations to be imperceptible. Use of the Resonant Driver prevented all concern over ground borne vibration of the sewer and allowed the contractor to progress at conventional, high production while maintaining low cost to the owner.Subsequent projects continue to prove that Resonant driving of sheet piles achieves high production while eliminating ground vibration.IntroductionA complex environmental clean-up problem required a unique solution. A historic oil and fuel transfer station in Whitehorse, Yukon is located on the Yukon River. The facility has been in use since the Second World War and witnessed much careless activity. The sand and gravel site provided ease of transmission of hydrocarbon leachates directly into the Yukon River. Continued use of the site required a barrier wall be constructed to prevent hydrocarbon from leaching into the Yukon River. A short construction season and restrictive fisheries window made for a compressed schedule. Along the shoreline of the property and within the required clean up zone a large diameter sanitary sewer collector line was present that serviced the majority of downtown Whitehorse. The design called for a barrier wall to be constructed along the waterfront adjacent to the sewer with cofferdams constructed out into the Yukon River to recover contaminated riverbed soils. The coarse sands and gravels meant high hydraulic conductivity into any kind of excavation, including slurried or drilled shafts that may have been used to construct a low vibration shoring system. Conventional hammer or vibrator technology would result in high ground vibrations that risked damaging the sewer. The Resonant Driver method was selected for its ability to drive sheet piles with high production and zero ground borne vibrations."

Les nombreux incidents survenus au cours des dernières années à travers le monde montrent toutefois que la stabilité de ces ouvrages reste encore problématique. Les cas de rupture les plus courants sont reliés aux glissements le long des pentes, à la liquéfaction des rejets, au débordement des bassins, ainsi qu?à l'érosion régressive et de surface. Après avoir rappelé la nature et l?importance des certains incidents récents, l?origine de ces problèmes est brièvement présentée. On aborde ensuite le lien entre les critères à adopter pour la conception des ouvrages et les risques associés à leur rupture. De nouvelles avenues pour aider à contrôler certains problèmes sont enfin discutées, en mettant l?emphase sur la codisposition des roches stériles dans le parc à résidus miniers.

THE transportation of solids in pipe lines is a matter of deep concern in many fields of engineering. Much experimental and theoretical work has been done in an effort to devise means of designing pipe lines that will satisfactorily transport given solid loads, but there remain many unanswered questions in this field. The present discussion will be confined to a rather narrow portion of this field and will endeavor to point out certain factors that may well be considered when comparing the relative economy of various installations. The data have been presented previously but a new interpretation was prompted by a suggestion in a paper by Professor O'Brien,1 of the University of California, that the friction work per pound of dry material should be considered in determining the relative efficiency of various installations. This method of considering relative economy in various pipe lines leads to some rather unexpected conclusions, especially with reference to the economy of large pipe sizes. A previous suggestion by the writer3 concerning the economy of a rather peculiar type of installation is strengthened. It is not believed that the considerations set forth herein apply directly in the case of dredge lines, where economy is largely a matter of a high rate of pumping in order to reduce the unit overhead charge. However, it is believed that some value may be gained from these considerations in cases involving the disposal of a fixed amount of solids per unit time with a minimum expenditure of energy and at a low cost for replacement of worn pipes. Such situations are not uncommon in the disposal of mill tailings and the disposal of solids deposited from irrigation waters. It was found that data leading to general conclusions for various pipe sizes were not available but certain definite trends are indicated and methods of analyzing available data are presented in the hope that they may be of assistance in preparing engineering estimates on designs of pipe lines of the type described above. REQUIREMENTS Carrying out the idea contained in Professor O'Brien's paper concerning the method of computing energy required to transport solids, the following analysis leads to some rather interesting conclusions. "Two 35 foot diameter enviro clear thickeners were tested in series as CCD units from June until October, 1978. Up to shutdown in July, we ran with automatic bed level control via the level probes and underflow pinch valves. Despite extensive efforts, we were unable to eliminate the surges created between the units by the opening and closing of the pinch valves. Early in July, the best rake speed and gap setting were determined. After shutdown, the enviro clears were run by manually controlling the pinch valves. These efforts were successful.A few mechanical problems were encountered while operating the thickeners. New units should incorporate more support for the drive coupling and a rubber feed seal. A few modifications of the instrumentation control scheme will be required before the units can be fully automated. A less sophisticated automatic flocculant addition system will accomplish the desired results. Control of the underflow withdrawal via the pinch valve should be investigated further. Our best results were obtained by keeping the feed volume to the No. 1 enviro clear constant. Surges were controlled by opening or closing both underflow valves proportionately.Capacity of the enviro clears is dependent of many variables. The ore treated during the test program was much finer than that reported on in R & D Project Report 76-02. Conditions were never steady enough to determine best flocculant dosage or addition point(s). The lowest soluble losses were obtained at very high wash rates. The underflow densities drop but the soluble losses also drop. Regression equations were developed in order to assess the effect of the various parameters. Within the range studied, these equations will predict the performance of enviro clear thickeners as CCD units on Elliot Lake ores. Our results show that the enviro clear thickeners are a viable alternative to the conventional CCD thickener."

Discharge vessels of advanced light sources are made of translucent polycrystalline Al2O3(PCA).These tubes contain salt mixtures, which essentially consist of metal halides. The salt mixture is present as a melt at the coldest spot of the vessel under operating conditions and vaporizes partly. The temperatures of the coldest spot range between 1200 K and 1300 K, depending on the lamp performance. The maximum wall temperatures range up to 1500 K and for special purposes up to1700 K. Important constituents of the melt are alkali halides AX (A = Na, Cs, X= Br, I) and rare earth metal halides LnX3(Ln = Dy, Ho, Tm). Severe corrosion attack on the wall material is observed in the PCA discharge vessels. The aim of this work is to elucidate the corrosion mechanism. Annealing experiments under well defined temperatures were carried out in order to understand the complex chemical corrosion processes. Two different annealing vessels were used, one for experiments under isothermal conditions with a temperature of 1473 K and one for experiments with a linear temperature gradient from 1450 K to 1600 K. The vessels were filled with salt mixtures of different compositions and annealed for 1000 h. The corrosion attack was characterised by XRD, analytical electron microscopy, high temperature mass spectrometry, and chemical analysis of the salt melts. The results of our investigations show that the corrosion attack is caused by vapour species and by the salt melt. The most severe corrosion is observed in vessels filled with mixtures of alkali halides and rare earth metal halides. No corrosion of the alumina is practically observed if pure alkali halides or pure rare earth metal halides are present in the annealing vessel. "Ecological Engineering and Biological Polishing technology is a decommissioning approach for inactive coal, uranium and base metal operations. To improve acid mine drainage water some fundamental aspects of wetland ecology and sediment microbiology are combined, to provide conditions to allow for biomineralization of the contaminants.This paper summarizes the first records of microbial alkalinity generation in acid mine drainage through the utilisation of the ARUM process. The process requires that the seepage is at pH 4.5 where sulphate reducers utilize sulphate to produce hydrogen sulphide, which in turn precipitates with metals. The pH increase is brought about by alkalinity generating microbes.The ARUM process has been successful in increasing the pH from 2.5 to 7.0. Flow through reactors operated in the laboratory continuously for more than 60 days have removed Ni from 13 mg/L to < 0.01 mg/L. Design parameters are being developed for low flow rates of 5 L/min in a test system receiving seepage from a tailings.1.0 INTRODUCTIONAcid mine drainage associated with mining wastes poses a significant environmental problem. Conventional means to treat acid mine drainage (AMD) use chemical treatment system. Ecological Engineering technology uses natural biological means to curtail and ameliorate AMD during mine operations and at the time of decommissioning. The premise underlying Ecological Engineering technology is that AMD is the result of a natural process enhanced by mining activities. Therefore, in nature, a process providing a natural balance to AMD has to exist, which, when assisted through appropriate means, can counteract the detrimental effects of AMD on the environment. This process is microbial alkalinity generation which is known to occur in wetlands, lake and ocean sediments (Baas Becling et al, 1960)."

The leaching behaviour of nickel?copper matte in an acidic?copper sulphate solution during the repulping stage at Impala Platinum Refineries has been studied. The base metal recovery process consists of a matte repulping stage prior to a series of pressure leach stages. Therefore, the repulping stage is basically an atmospheric leach stage in which the matte containing mostly Niand Cu is leached in copper-spent electrolyte from the tank house, resulting in dissolution of nickel and precipitation of almost all the copper. To understand the nature of the leaching process during this stage of the operation, the effects of temperature stirring rate and matte particle size on the rate and extent of base metal dissolution and copper rejection from the solution have been investigated. The leaching mechanism of the matte in the investigated system is alsoproposed.

The coal pillars in room-and-pillar mining method are subjected to vertical stress due to overburden rock mass and horizontal stress relieve due to entries excavation around them. Some coal mining companies are applying rock bolts and steel straps to improve the pillar strength, consequently to reducing the pillar size and increasing coal recovery. This kind of approach deserves some discussion, whether it is pillar reinforcement or just rib support. The efficiency of pillar reinforcement (or rib support) is directly related to the initial load capacity of coal pillar, the type of excavation, and the width to high ratio of the pillar. The objective of this paper is to understand the mechanism of pillar reinforcement (or rib support) using rock bolts and steel straps on pillar ribs. Numerical simulation taking into account the relations listed above. The results showed that the increase of coal pillar strength is very short, and there is no influence on improvement of load capacity of pillar. However, the rib support avoids block falling, rib failure, and displacement, reducing the pillar failure propagation into the pillar center. Keywords: coal, pillar reinforcement, room and pillar.

While many question "sustainability" as an intellectual field on the grounds that it is too broad and "undisciplined," we are able to achieve a good balance between breadth of coverage and depth of inquiry in our team-taught seminar "The Grand Challenges: Sustainable Development for the 21st Century" offered to first year students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. We strike this balance between breadth and depth by a) problematizing key sustainability issues in class discussions; b) by explicitly exploring the lenses of different disciplines (the historical context, the scientific facts, the engineering interventions and the philosophical foundations of unsustainable behaviors); and c) by offering our students opportunities to pursue a targeted project on specific sustainability issues (vertical gardening, metals recycling on college campus) through which they gain depth of understanding as well as practical exposure to all components of the problem, which puts them on the path of seeking effective solutions.

The legislation for the disposal of heavy metals contaminated substances is still going to be tightened up in the future. The main criteria for the utilization or deposition of these residues are the content and the water solubility of these metals. Through this, the use of slags from the lead-and zinc-industry in road building may become limited or even not possible at all. From an economic point of view this would lead to Pb/Zn losses and costs for safe dumping. This paper investigates the feeding of the reducing agent via hollow electrode DC smelting and the yield of metal reduction. After carrying out thermodynamic calculations, the process window conditions for electric-arc furnace tests were determined. Doing this, the zinc could be reduced, evaporated and recovered as an oxidic intermediate product flue dust, while the lead was present either in flue dust or in metallic form. The zinc content in the final slag could be reduced by up to 90%. The slag product has undergone an eluation test which allows it to be used as building materials. The use of column flotation cells for recovery of phosphate is becoming more common practice in certain parts of the world (Brazil, Russia) where igneous phosphate ores are processed. Igneous phosphates are generally finer grained (&lt; 200µm) than some of the traditional sedimentary phosphates (&lt;400µm). Australian phosphate from the Georgina basin is sedimentary, but has a much finer grain size (typically &lt; 106µm) than similar deposits in North Africa and the USA.In 2013, Arianne Phosphate completed a bankable feasibility study for the development of their igneous phosphate deposit at the Lac a Paul site in Quebec. Initially, lab test work and bench scale piloting indicated that using traditional mechanical flotation would be able to produce adequate concentrate grade and an economic level of recovery, but would necessitate the installation of a complex and operationally challenging flotation circuit. Later pilot plant testing using column cells resulted in a significant reduction in process complexity and facilitated the processing of the -20µm ore fraction which resulted in a 10% increase in P2O5 recovery and a 5% increase in concentrate grade %P2O5.Flotation column testing achieved a concentrate grade of 38.6% P2O5 at a P2O5 recovery of 90%. Using a mechanical flotation cell circuit, the concentrate grade was 36.4% P2O5 with a P2O5 recovery of only 78.8%. A noticeable feature of the testing was the simplicity of the column flotation circuit configuration (Rougher + 2 stages of cleaning + Cleaner Scavenger) compared to the mechanical flotation cell circuit (Rougher + Scavenger + 3 stages of cleaning).The financial benefit for this case study was estimated using a sales price of US$ 195/t FOB for a 38.6% P2O5 product, and an assumed cost of production of US$ 95/t, the netback price is calculated at US$100/t. For a daily milling rate of 55,000t/d, the improved flotation performance provides additional concentrate production of 1,203t/d. Using the netback price calculated above, this calculates to additional gross profit of US$ 120,260/d.Annualised, this equals US$ 40.7 million in additional revenue for a similar or reduced CAPEX.The use of column flotation on fine grained phosphate ore types often requires fine grinding and desliming to liberate the phosphate value, such as the Australian sedimentary phosphate ores. This may enable the development of deposits previously regarded as uneconomic.This paper discusses the potential benefits available to operators, and developers of new projects, for the use of column flotation cells in their metallurgical circuits as assessed by an engineering company.CITATION:Wingate, E, Kelahan, M, David, J-S and Bartsch, L, 2015. Monotonous flood planes flanked either side of the road as we drove in the embassy car from the airport to downtown Seoul. We crossed the brown waters of the Hann River, meandering over mud flats. A great, gnarled tree bore beautiful fall colors of gold. "That is a Ginko Tree, the oldest living fossil, probably a hundred million years old;" said Jean W. Pressler. Compared to other cities of the Far East, the traffic in and around Seoul was sedate. Few motorcycles or bicycles, and little superfluous horn tooting. "This is the best season in Korea. We have long beautiful springs and falls," said Pressler, chief of the mining branch of USAID, and he continued with a briefing on the country.

"The Aurora North mine has been operating for more than ten years, and is the source of over half of Syncrude’s bitumen production. The slurry systems at Aurora experience high rates of wear, and mission lengths on current slurry pumps are nominally 1500-2000 hours. Recent work has enabled a better understanding of the significant adverse effect of large particle impingement damage to impeller vane leading edges - which is the known life determining issue for Aurora hydrotransport pumps. A new pump design has been developed with a larger diameter impeller and increased vane lengths, and is expected to triple Aurora’s mission length for hydrotransport pumps.INTRODUCTIONSlurry Pumps are Critical Equipment at SyncrudeSlurry pumps are a critical component in Syncrude’s operations. In a typical Aurora application, each pump stage helps move over 8000 dry tonnes per hour of oil sand, plus an equal volume of process water that has been added to create the slurry. The average impeller life in oil sand hydrotransport service at Aurora has been nominally 1500-2000 hours, or 12-16 million tonnes of oil sand pumped. Generally, the slurry pump application at Aurora has proven very difficult to improve due to the unique combination of high sand abrasivity, 125 mm (5”) large particle top size (lumps), and high flow rate relative to basic pump size; a factor that results in higher than optimal impeller vane speeds for the service conditions.PROJECT BASISSlurry Pumps are the Reliability Bottleneck at AuroraSlurry pumps are currently the shortest-lived components that determine the overall system run length at Aurora, in Hydrotransport, Extraction and Tailings. Vibrating screens and piping had been previous bottlenecks, but their reliability has been improved through upgrades in equipment design and wear materials. Both vibrating screens and piping can now achieve 4000 hour mission lengths."

Bolting solutions traditionally offered only wet drilling or dry drilling options; each with advantages and disadvantages. Joy Mining Machinery has developed a Mist Drilling System that incorporates the best of both types of drilling. Compared to wet drilling, mist drilling offers as much as a 90% reduction in water use. As a result, floor and roof conditions are tremendously improved. This offers a safer and more comfortable work environment for operators. Mist drilling can offer a significant reduction in noise levels compared to dry drilling and in recent trials, bit life has been greatly improved. Holes are cleaner and operators experience less exposure to respirable dust.

Before beginning any site development or mineral extraction activity, it has been well documented that it is first prudent to gain an understanding of the prevailing geologic conditions.Whether it’s identifying the depth to type of bedrock, or determining the quality and quantity of the in place mineral deposit, these factors should always be considered in a project’s fatal flaw analysis. In situations where there is limited subsurface information, geologic models have been proven to be one of the most valuable and cost-effective tools used by the developer and/or his consultant.
