Ground behaviour in the vicinity of a roadway has been investigated using a physical model and in situ tests during a roof fall. It was discovered that behaviour of the ground is governed by irreversible displacements of adjacent rock clusters. The cluster is a short-living sector of a rock mass that moves as a solid body. For the lack of degree of freedom, the rock mass must be divided into clusters that are forced to move one after another in space and in time. These clusters permanently rearrange and reform during irreversible (inelastic) ground deformation. The crowded clusters have to yield to each other and alter their velocity and direction of movement to accommodate their motion into the excavation. Such behaviour involves uneven and irregular vertical deflection and the movement of adjacent rock blocks in the roof, sides and floor of an opening. Such movement destroys the symmetry of horizontal displacements with respect to the centre line of the opening. A set of indicators that a roof fall is imminent has been identified. Horizontal displacements and dilation must be controlled in order to maintain the stability of an underground opening. Such a state retains the self-supporting effect of the roof and contributes to rock bolts bearing capacity.

"SummaryBritish Petroleum plc is developing a new gold recovery process known as coal gold agglomeration (CGA) for the recovery of gold from its ores. Liberated gold grains are recovered with high efficiency by adhering to agglomerates of coal and oil. The process is simple, can recover gold grains down to very fine sizes, avoids the large scale use of cyanide and provides the industry with an important new process option.A technical appraisal of the process has been performed on an extensive range of gold bearing materials. Ore types have been identified from which high gold recoveries can be achieved. A spreadsheet based computer program has been used to estimate the preliminary capital and operating costs of the process. Comparison with established gold production costs shows that the process costs of CGA, on the appropriate ore types, are potentially very attractive, which will enable economic treatment of lower grade ores than is currently possible using conventional cyanidation. Treatment of known placer deposits or gravity concentration plant tailings may be the most rapid means of demonstrating the process at a commercial scale prior to more widespread applications.1. Heap leaching and CIP/CIL operations have been responsible for the major part of new production during the 1970s and 1980s with present overall production costs averaging US$200/oz in Canada, USA and Australia and US$265/oz in South Africa [l]. A great deal of research and process development effort in the 1980s has been towards the treatment of refractory ores. Operating costs for the economic processing of these ore types by currently available routes are around US$300/oz [2]."

Résumé Cent soixante (160) câbles d'ancrage ont été installés au toit de la rampe à la Mine-laboratoire de CANMET à Val-d'Or, Qué bec, Canada, pour prévenir toute dégradation suite à l'élargissement de la voie de roulage dans un secteur tournant à 180 degrés, communément appelé Virage Santa Barbara. Le roc à cet endroit est de nature bloqueuse et stratifiée, et son épaisseur au toit de la rampe est limitée à environ dix (10) mètres, le tout sous une couche de terrain meuble saturée en permanence. Le soutènement mis en place a été conçu pour former une zone de compression et supporter une strate de roc d?environ quatre (4) mètres d'épaisseur. Les critères de conception et les méthodes d'installation sont présentées. Un contrôle de qualité rigoureux a été effectué au moment de la mise en place du support, notamment en ce qui concerne la mise en tension des câbles eux-mêmes et la qualité du béton utilisé lors de l'injection. Des instruments de mesure seront mis en place sous peu pour dépister tout mouvement éventuel au toit de la rampe. Abstract Design and installation of an active mine ground support using tensioned cables at the Experimental Mine, Val-d?Or, Québec, Canada. One hundred sixty (160) cables were installed at the back of the ramp at the CANMET?s Experimental Mine located in Val-d?Or, Québec, Canada, to prevent any degradation of the ground after the enlargement of the roadway in a sector turning at 180 degrees, usually called Virage Santa Barbara. The nature of the rock mass in this area is blocky and stratified, and its thickness above the ramp does not exceed ten (10) metres. Eight (8) metres of soil, mostly saturated, cover the bedrock on top of the ramp. The ground support was designed to form a compression zone at the back, aimed to carry a strata of rock of around four (4) metres thick. The design criteria and the methods of installation of the ground support are described in the paper. A strict control of the quality of the grout used for injection and the tension placed in the cables was carried out during the installation of the support. Ground monitors will be installed soon, to detect any movement that could take place above the ramp.

Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The stability of a ferrosilicon dense medium suspension is one of the most important parameters to keep under control since it determines the density gradient of the medium in the separation zone and thus directly influences separation sharpness. The stability of ferrosilicon suspensions were characterized using settling tests employing a differential pressure method. Particles smaller than 45 µm and especially the ore fines played an important role in the settling behaviour of the solids. "The design, construction and commissioning of Kiena Gold Mines Limited's new mill was completed in 15 months ending in September 1984. Rated at 1250 tonnes per day the mill incorporates the latest innovative technology such as semi-autogenous grinding, carbon in pulp, pressure stripping and induction furnace refining. The mill is housed in a pre-engineered building with the leach tanks and thickeners located outdoors in spite of the intense winter cold. 1.0 INTRODUCTION AND HISTORYThe operations or Kiena Gold Mines Limited are located in Dubw1sson Township, approximately 10 Km west of Val d'Or, in the Abitibi region northwestern Quebec. Comprised of 59 mining claims covering 1214 hectares, a large portion of the mining property is overlain by the waters of Lac de Montigny. Sometime between 1911 and 1914 Barney Parker discovered gold in a shear zone on an island in Lac de Montigny that now bears his name. The first shaft the Parker Shaft, was sunk in 1936 from the island to a depth of 136 meters but owing to the known veins being of limited extent and the onset of the Second World War operations were terminated in 1940. In the early l960 1 s exploration drilling indicated an orebody of 4,500.000 tonnes at 6.3 grams of gold per tonne. A causeway was built to link the island to the mainland in 1963 and a new 3 compartment shaft was sunk to 403 metres. The orebody was further delineated and the ground conditions within the orebody and surrounds were evaluated.At the end of 1965 the property was placed on a care and maintenance basis as a mining operation would be marginal with gold selling at $35 per ounce."

At a regional scale, the Otago Schist has been divided into textural zones, metamorphic zones, structural transposition zones, and terranes and lithologic associations. Each of these subdivisions reveals aspects of the internal structure of the lithologically monotonous Otago Schist but, to date, a map of the schist derived directly from structural data has not been made. In the present study, digitised structural data from the QMAP GIS were used to make a form line map of Schist foliation which, in turn (and using certain non-unique guiding assumptions), was used to construct a provisional foliation thickness map of the Otago Schist. Contours of dominant foliation (Sp) thickness have been drawn from 4 kIn above to 16 km below the reference level of the Caples-Torlesse terrane boundary in the schist structural pile. A recent revision of the Otago Schist textural zone classification has shown that the grain size of metamorphic white micas increases progressively with textural grade. There also appears to be a correlation between schist mica grain size and foliation thickness. Using mica grain size, it may eventually be feasible to establish the vertical structural position of samples in greenschist facies parts of the schist pile to a precision of ¦ 1 km or better, even if they are in inliers or fault-bounded blocks. Foliation thickness and mica grain size are thus potentially useful tools for research and exploration in the Otago Schist in that they assist with structural interpolation and extrapolation. Even at this early stage of application they can be used to provide hitherto unobtainable, semi-quantitative estimates of displacement on Mesozoic and Cenozoic faults and folds.

Selective leaching of phases in charge chrome is used in a variety of industrial processes for the production of chromium chemicals. A mineralogical study was made of a range of local charge chrome samples, at various stages of leaching in sulphuric acid (20g/l at 90°C), using mainly a scanning electron microscope (SEM) together with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy analyzer (EDS), and X-ray diffraction techniques. It was found that the leaching behaviour of the different types of charge chrome depends largely on the nature of the secondary phases, which in turn depends upon whether the silicon content is above or below 4 per cent by mass. The leaching behaviour of high-chromium ferrite is anomalous, and it is postulated that the process is analogous to the corrosion of brass by dezincification. This paper pays tribute to the pioneers in geomechanics, and addresses some of the most pressing issues of our time related to deep mining, and how to mitigate these issues. Solutions developed by our predecessors seem to have reached their limits as mines continue to go deeper. The International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) guidelines for rock mass characterization for excavation design also require re-thinking to reflect current knowledge and experience. Thus, a whole new approach is urgently required to increase mine safety and productivity. The paper will draw on the challenges and experiences in medicine and science that have been overcome through genuine collaboration, advances in technology, and impressive funding, which can be adopted to provide solutions to contemporary geomechanics challenges for increased safety and productivity as mines continue to go deeper.

TEMCO has been producing manganese ferroalloys in submerged arc electric furnaces for over 40 years. The furnace linings all along have been of conventional insulation type until 2001 when a freeze lining of UCAR concept was installed for a 20 MW Furnace. Continuous improvement of furnace lining performance has been a key component in improving the business competitiveness of TEMCO. The expected minimum campaign life of the freeze lining is fifteen years as compared to the ten years of the conventional linings. The success of the freeze lining is very critical to the quanta and direction of heat flow through the lining that control the freeze protection. Under freeze protection can lead to reduced lining life and over freeze protection, on the other hand, can lead to operating difficulties and loss of smelting efficiency. It was, therefore, necessary to develop a computer based system to monitor and control the freeze protection. The computer based monitoring and control system uses the basic principles of heat transfer, activeX object and heat flux from dual thermocouples and that is reviewed.

It has been known that after initial pile driving, pile capacity gain over time (set-up) could constitute a significant portion of the total pile capacity. In the past, there has been very little guidance for incorporating pile set-up capacity in design. This may be due to large uncertainties involved in predicting the pile set-up. A comprehensive statistical database is developed to describe the increase of pile axial capacity with time, known as set-up, when piles are driven into sand. Based on the collected pile testing data, pile set-up is significant and continues to develop for a long time after pile installation. The statistical database shows that a lognormal distribution can be used to describe the probabilistic characteristics of the predicted set-up capacity using Skov and Denver?s equation. The main objective of this paper is to incorporate the set-up effect into a reliability-based Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) of driven piles in sand. A First Order Reliability Method (FORM) is used to derive separate resistance factors that would account for different degrees of uncertainties associated with the measured short-term capacity and the predicted set-up capacity from the proposed semi-empirical equations. The incorporation of set-up effects in the LRFD helps improve the prediction of the total capacity of driven piles, resulting in more economical design. A practical design procedure within LRFD framework to incorporate the pile set-up effect is outlined at the end of the paper.

Gold is one of the most widely used substrate materials for self-assembly. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) prepared from alkanethiols and their derivatives on gold are the most reliable and well-studied systems to date, which have attracted much attention because of interest in two-dimensional molecular assemblies, and of their potential applications in molecular devices, sensors, and functionalized interfaces. Gold electrodes are also very important in microelectronics and electroanalytical chemistry. This work reports the characterization of a new type of gold substrates for self-assembly. The gold substrates are constructed from recordable compact disks (R-CDs) with simple and straightforward wet-chemical treatment, and can be made at desired sizes and shapes that satisfy different experimental needs. In particular, an easy, inexpensive, and reproducible method to prepare self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on CD-R gold substrates after removing the protective polymer films with concentrated nitric acid was described.

Para ello, se evalúa el sistema de información para planeamiento de minas y el sistema de información para el modelo matemático de minas Casapalca, concluyendo que este último sistema se encuentra implementado y permite suministrar los datos al Modelo Matemático de Planeamiento Minas. Asimismo es usado también para elaborar y reajustar el planeamiento mensual de producción que efectúa la supervisión de minas, constituyéndose en una herramienta valiosa para la toma de decisiones en el área de operaciones.

With both unit costs per meter and average depth of drilling constantly increasing, there is a strong incentive to maximize the information acquired from drill holes, and then to make this information accessible to the geological staff. The larger the drilling project, the more advantageous computerization of data is over manual methods. The conversion to computer-readable form and the verification of large amounts of drill-hole data can be a substantial data processing task, but once accomplished, the benefits in increased accuracy and speed of interpretation will compensate for the time and effort spent in the work. For an exploration project progressing towards a preliminary feasibility study, about half of both the time and costs for all computer work of the entire feasibility study are devoted to drill-hole data base organization, and maintenance. Once drill-hole results are quantified and verified to be correct, they are immediately accessible and are not subject to further transcription or reinterpretation of errors. To obtain maximum benefits from computer utilization in this area, the drill-hole data base should be set up along with availability of the first data. For some companies, this may initially comprise a large number of purely speculative drill holes on a spacing of perhaps 1 or 2 km. Although few of these drill holes may encounter economic material, thought should be given, at this time, to the variables which will be logged when such material is found. In this way, it should be possible to set up a consistent format into which all future drill-hole information will readily be accommodated. This format may even be carried over into the data base requirements for an operating property.

This report describes the development and underground operation of a semi-automatic, raise climber, Man and Supply Hoist System designed for stope access in underground metal and nonmetal mines. Demonstrated capabilities of the system include a 4000-lb payload capacity, control from the traveling cage and from up to five remote stations, operating in vertical or inclined raises 5 ft in diameter and up to 300 ft in length and a travel speed of 50 ft/min. The 'system has the capability of operating in crooked raises because the conveyance climbs two stationary wire ropes suspended down the raise. The drive unit is electrically powered with power and control signals supplied to the drive unit through an armored cable also suspended down the raise. The system has been designed for portability, ease of installation and minimum raise development. The system can be installed by two men in five shifts. The hoist has been demonstrated successfully in two underground applications. The first demonstration was in a 5-ft diam, 60 deg inclined raise over a 2-month period. The second demonstration utilized a vertical 5-ft diam borehole to access a blast-hole stoping area. The system successfully provided two shift-a-day service over a 7-month duration demonstration. This report provides a detailed description of the hoist design and its demonstrated performance in two mine applications.

In 2005, El Teniente mine began preconditioning the primary rock mass by hydraulic fracturing (HF). The major perceived benefits of this process are a decrease in the magnitude of the expected maximum seismic event and improved cave propagation. In addition, HF has resulted in new information on the propagation pressures of each fracture. Previous studies have attempted to relate propagation pressure to minor principal stress or confining stress.Considering the spatial continuity of propagation pressure and the significant quantity of collected data since the incorporation of the HF technique, minimum requirements for geostatistical modelling have been reached, permitting robust estimates inside the representative volume with acceptable errors (Cornejo, Muñoz and Rojas, 2012; Cornejo and Landeros, 2013). These results are then used to identify zones with higher magnitudes, which are mostly related to more complex geotechnical zones (intrusive and major faults) and caving singularities, making it possible to estimate the spatial extension of these zones.Finally, these results are integrated with other geomechanics aspects to support risk analysis of the mining plan.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Landeros, P, Benado, D, Caviedes, C and Pinochet, A, 2016. "The importance of the oxygen content of sulphide mineral pulps in determining which reactions occur, and their subsequent influence on flotation behaviour is grossly underestimated in most operating concentrators. While pH is routinely monitored, Eh and dissolved oxygen measurements are obtained infrequently. However, dissolved oxygen measurements in conjunction with other pulp chemical parameters (i.e. pH, Eh, and EDTA extractable metal ion analysis), can provide valuable insight into where and what type of reactions are occurring within a circuit. Unfortunately, these readings yield “instantaneous” measurements of the pulp chemical parameters.What is needed is a means of establishing how reactive a pulp is, and how this reactivity changes as components of the system are manipulated. Oxygen demand provides an opportunity to do this. Several attempts at measuring the oxygen demand of a pulp have been made in the past with varying degrees of success. Most notable among these are Noranda and BOC Gases.Learning from these experiences, Magotteaux have developed the MagO2 ® demand vessel to measure the oxygen demand of mineral pulps. This paper described the apparatus, and through a case study on Broken Hill lead/zinc ore demonstrates how the MagO2 ® demand vessel is used.INTRODUCTIONThe role of oxygen in flotation is complex. While a considerable body of work exists demonstrating the strong involvement of oxygen in the interactions between sulphide minerals and collector (Gaudin and Finkelstein, 1965; Gaudin, 1974; Woods, 1984; Laajalehto, Nowak and Suoninen, 1993), the presence of oxygen can also affect the oxidation state of sulphide and non-sulphide minerals, which can impact on their flotation behaviour. Further, sulphide mineral oxidation is related to their oxygen demand (Spira and Rosenblum, 1994)."

"Concentration of dense mineral phases (s.g. greater than 7) for characterisation of individual particles and mineral grains by electron microscopy is a well established technique for the detection and characterisation of valuable mineral phases. This presentation describes the type of data that can be generated when both the concentration and characterisation steps are carried to higher levels than typical. The concentration step is the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) protocol that has been used for over 100 ore samples. This protocol yields three concentrates that represent three progressive degrees of grinding and liberation. Three ore samples were subjected to the GRG protocol and three size classes of each concentrate were characterised using the mineral liberation analyser (MLA), an automated, EDX-based tool. This presentation briefly presents GRG and MLA technology, and then focuses on the results obtained: photos, images and databank, the latter used to evaluate the extent of particle liberation and particle shape.INTRODUCTIONThe practice of gravity concentration prior to characterization of mineral samples using electron beam microscopy is solidly established. Typically, a dense liquid such as tetrabromoethane (density: 2.97 g/cm3) is used to reject the light phase, typically carbonates and silicates. The heavy phase, mostly sulphides, oxides and precious metals, is then mounted in a polymer matrix and examined using beam microscopy.Both the pre-concentration and the sample preparation/examination steps have seen significant advances over the past ten years, but are not without problems. A major issue of preconcentration is that most dense liquids used are toxic, tetrabromoethane being a prime example. More recently, a dense liquid with little or no toxicity (sodium polytungstate, distributed by Sometu Inc.) has become commercially available, but its use is limited to relatively low s.g. splits around 3 g/cm3. Dense liquids are viscous, and their use is limited to particles coarser than 37 µm, although centrifuge separation can probably lower this limit to around 10 µm. Magnetogravimetric separators can achieve much higher specific density cuts, but upgrading below 100 µm or in the presence of magnetic minerals remains a problem. The use of centrifuge separators such as the 3-in Knelson Concentrator (KC MD3) or the Falcon 4-in SB (SB4) is particularly attractive since these units can easily process large masses (by laboratory standards) and achieve a cut density well above those of dense liquids."

Filtration is an important solid liquid separation technology employed widely in the mineral processing industries. The effectiveness of the filtration operation can be influenced by numerous variables, related to the particulate phase, the slurry rheology and the equipment. The classical approach for analysis is based on Darcy's law. Knowledge of the cake poremicro structure and its correlation to macroscopic cake properties is required to model the filtration operation from a fundamental point of view. Since cake formation seems to occur randomly, a 3D Monte Carlo method was used to simulate cake formation. The configuration for simulation was a space with width of 500 m, length of 500 m and height of 4000 m. Size distributions of five different industrial products whose particle size distributions follow the Rosin Rammler distribution function were used. The particle shape was assumed to be spherical. The simulated cake structures were described in terms of volume porosity (volume of pore space per unit volume of cake) and surface porosity (area of pore space per unit area of a cross section). The results indicate: 1) it is possible to simulate 3D packing, which mimics cake structure, using the Monte Carlo method,2) segregation phenomena occurs during simulated cake formation, 3) the values of calculated porosity for simulated samples B, C, D, and E were lower than those determined for corresponding industrial products Br, Cr, Dr, and Er, and 4)some structures of simulated samples seem to correlate with laboratory leaf test data obtained for different products from plant operations.
