In order to provide an initial approach to the deposits of oil shale, nahcolite, and dawsonite in the central area or the Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado, the U.S.B.M. and associated contractor personnel drilled and cased a 96-inch ID shaft to a depth of 2,371 feet. The shaft was constructed using ?big hole? drilling techniques and succeeded in giving access to previously inaccessible deposits of the above minerals. This report documents the construction from its beginning in January 1977 to its completion in January 1978. Procedures used and problems encountered are discussed in detail.

"Pitting corrosion inhibition of 304 stainless steel (SS) in groundwater with a ternary inhibitor mixture (phosphonic acid + bivalent cation + various surfactants) was studied with different environmental variables such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and chloride ions. Critical pitting potential and corrosion potential were calculated for these test media using electrochemical techniques. Under the tested condition, the localized corrosion resistance of 304 SS was determined and the results are discussed. IntroductionPitting corrosion of metals and alloys is a major cause of failure in chemical processing desalination plants, scrubber for flue gas desulphurization (FGD) plants, water storage tanks and pipelines, petroleum refineries, etc.Heat exchangers and condensers in inland thermal and nuclear powerplants utilize groundwater as a coolant, but materials of construction are generally prone to localized corrosion.Localized corrosion attack can be initiated when the passive film on the metal is disrupted. The presence of certain aggressive anions such as chlorides (Cl-) can migrate to the actively corroding area and stabilize pitting corrosion. Attention has been focussed on improving the resistance of stainless steel against localizedcorrosion in aqueous environments.One of the most accepted methods of avoiding corrosion is by the addition of chemicals (inhibitors). Over the past two decades, some phosphonic acids have been explored due to their good corrosion inhibition efficiency and low toxicity (Fang et al., 1993; Karman et al., 1998; Rajendran et al., 1998; Gopi and Rajeswari, 2000a). Bivalent cations like Zn2+ are often applied as additives to inhibit the metal dissolution (Sekine and Hirakawa, 1986; Aruna Bahadur, 1998)."

The use of discrete element modelling (DEM) is widespread in the materials handling field, and is used for many applications. One of the important limitations in using DEM is the number of particles that can be modelled, with this limitation often resulting in increasing the minimum particle size in the simulation. This restriction on minimum particle size is usually accommodated in the calibration process where the parameters in the simulation are chosen in such a way as to reflect the presence of smaller sized particles, and in typical applications such as transfer chutes this is standard practice. However, in the application of vibrating screens the inclusion of the ‘fines’ is critically important due to their influence on the screening efficiency. In reality, the presence of fines reduces the screening efficiency for a number of reasons; however, the main mechanism that will be addressed in this study is the effect of adhering fines. This is where the fines adhere to the larger particles and are carried over into the lump stream. The approach for this study will be to firstly consider the relatively simple mechanical sieving process used in the determination of particle size distribution, and then this will be expanded to consider the application of vibrating screens.CITATION:Donohue, T J, Chen, W, Katterfeld, A and Reid, S, 2017. The advances in seismic design considering soil-structure interaction or soil-pile-structure interaction are described using a substructure approach. The nonlinearity of soil is considered approximately using a boundary zone model with non-reflective interface, and computer programs are available for practical applications. The validation of model is confirmed with dynamic tests on piles in the field, and the results for a single pile are used to compare with the predictions in this study. The liquefaction for sand soil layer can be accounted for, and a case of liquefaction is discussed. Two practical examples are examined, a vacuum tower structure supported on foundation of steel pile group and a table top structure supported on foundation of concrete pile group. To illustrate the effects of soil-pile-structure interaction on the seismic response of vacuum structure, different base conditions are considered, rigid base, i.e. no deformation of the foundation; linear soil-pile system; and nonlinear soil-pile system. The method introduced can be applied to the design of tall buildings, bridges, industrial structures and offshore platforms with soil-pile-structure interaction under seismic or dynamic loads.

"High intensity conditioning has been demonstrated in a number of cases to enhance fine particle flotation. The improvement could be attributed to the enhanced formation of particle aggregates. However, the understanding of aggregation mechanisms remains rather limited. Recently, an enhanced particle aggregation was observed by the formation of small air bubbles resulting from high intensity agitations (HIA). In this study, a novel visualization system is designed and constructed for characterizing the fine bubbles formed in an HIA cell. The new design allows determination of gas evolution and bubble size distribution. With this system, the effect of dissolved air on fine bubble generation by HIA is investigated. The results show that HIA creates a favorable environment for the formation of gas nuclei and small size bubbles due to hydrodynamic cavitation.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a dominant separation technique employed by mineral industry to recover the valuable mineral particles. However, in general, particles finer than approximately 10 µm are not effectively recovered by conventional froth flotation technique due to their low inertia and high specific surface area (Fuerstenau, 1988). Therefore, the fine particle flotation has been considered as the central challenge of flotation research. Substantial advances have been made for fine particle flotation from both a theoretical and technological point of view (Fuerstenau et al., 1979; Song and Lu, 1990; Subrahmanyam and Forssberg, 1990; Sivamohan, 1990; Sedat and Barry, 1991; Matis, 1995). High intensity agitation (HIA), for example, has found some success to improve fine particle flotation kinetics in laboratory tests (Chen et al., 1999a and 1999b; Valderrama and Rubio, 1998; Rubio and De Brum, 1994).The effect of mechanical agitation on flotation kinetics has been recognized for many years. In mid-1970s, Warren (1975) reported that increasing the shear rate of the pulp could improve the efficiency of ultra fine particle flotation. He attributed this improvement in flotation to the formation of aggregates. This concept of aggregation has been extended by Rubio (1978), and Bulatovic and Salter (1989), who employed high intensity agitation (HIA) method to promote aggregation. They found that HIA with the addition of collectors, frothers and suitable modifiers significantly improved both the flotation recovery and selectivity of ultra fine sulphide minerals. The improvement was explained by warren’s shear flocculation theory. Till now, many studies (Chen et al., 1999a and 1999b; Valderrama and Rubio, 1998) have been undertaken to improve fine particle flotation by HIA. However, most of these studies were focused on the relation between energy input and flotation efficiency. Less information was available for describing how the aggregate formed during HIA process."

Presplit blasting in strip mines is aimed at creating a safer wall to work under during the coaling operations. Good quality presplits are also necessary for effective throw blasting and drainage of the blast block. A less obvious but important function is full coal recovery. Optimum Colliery has been experiencing rock freezing against the presplit highwalls. The rock formed in patches along the highwall and trapped coal beneath it. The material that was &ozen comprised the rock between the back row of holes and the presplit and was often up to 3 m thick (the stand off distance between the back line and the presplit). The cozen rock formed predominantly along the bottom halfor bottom two thirds of the highwall. Along the top portion of the highwall, the presplit crack was usually well formed with visible barrels. This problem, or similar variations of it, is common on many South African strip-mine operations. Investigative work was carried out at Optimum Colliery to correct the problem. This paper presents the information and measurements that were made and discusses the solutions that have been applied to solve the problem. It was found that there were two independent causes for the tiozen material, with each contributing more or less to the frozen rock along the highwall. It was found that the presplit was not forming properly in places, especially closer to the bottom of the highwalls. The reasons and the solutions are presented. The second cause was found to be associated with reduced detonation velocity in the back line holes coupled with low confinement from long delay periods. Emulsion explosive that is sensitised with air bubbles was found to be prone to this phenomenon near the back of high-energy blasts. A change in the explosive formulation in the back-line holes, together with reduced delays in the back line, has resulted in significant improvements. The details are presented in this paper.

Scheelite mineralisation east of the main divide in' the Southern Alps of New Zealand was originally identified by Royden Thompson who is now a geologist with the NZ Geological Survey. This mineralisation was brought to the attention of CRA in 1978. Reconnaissance surveys were carried out in 1979 to delineate the extent of the mineralisation. This was undertaken using ultraviolet light examination of the sediments within the major drainages in the Southern Alps. This defined tentative zones of prospective mineralisation. As a result of this, preliminary reconnaissance, exploration licences were applied for -those areas in which indications of scheelite mineralisation were strongest. A total of 1737 km2 of ground was applied for within four exploration licences. These covered the main Southern Alps mountain chain between the Haast/Wanaka highway and the Mt Cook National Park.

"The Obuasi Mine of AngloGold Ashanti Limited has been operating the world’s largest Biooxidation Plant at its Sulfide Treatment Plant (STP) in Ghana, using the Gencor Biox® technology since February 1994. The Biox® technology was preferred to other alternative methods of treating refractory sulfide ores such as roasting, pressure oxidation and nitric acid leaching due to among other reasons, its lower capital and operating costs, reduced technical risk, relatively benign environmental impact and its ease of operation and maintenance in a remote location.STP has since commissioning succeeded in operating this technology successfully but not without some operational problems. The Plant has seen a number of upgrades and modifications in its circuits which were motivated by cost, operational and throughput constraints.The objective of this paper is therefore to highlight the mine’s experience in the treatment of its complex carbonaceous refractory sulfide gold ores with emphasis on plant operations and improvements such as the Biox® reactors expansion, flotation concentrate upgrade project and neutralization circuit modifications. The Biox® Plant operating cost is also discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Obuasi mine forms part of the AngloGold Ashanti Group of Gold Mines. It is located in the Adansi West District of the Republic of Ghana. The mine is primarily an underground operation, although some surface mining still takes place. Ore is processed by two main treatment plants: the Sulfide Treatment Plant (for underground ore) and the Tailings plant (for tailings reclamation operations). A third plant, the Oxide Plant, is used to batch-treat remnant opencast ore and stockpiles, of which there are adequate tonnages to keep the plant operational until 2008.Though reference is made in this paper to the Tailings and Oxide Treatment Plants, the main focus will be on the Sulfide Treatment Plant."

The successful expansion of crude oil production begun in late 1977, led to promising development of the nonfuel minerals sector. Although actual production of nonfuel minerals was limited both in variety and in percentage of output on a world scale, the potential for expansion with a rapidly developing infrastructure was significant. The energy base was expanding with construction of two new hydroelectric powerplants in addition to the existing plant near Edea. The Song Loulou plant will have a 240-megawatt capacity, and a hydroelectric plant under construction in the northern part of the country by mainland China will have 72 megawatts of installed capacity. Inflation of between 15% and 20% resulted in a real gross domestic product (GDP) of $2.8 billion2 in fiscal year 1980 (July 31 to June 1), up 6% from that of the previous fiscal year. Petroleum became the leading export item in terms of value, surpassing coffee and cocoa exports. Mineral exports as a whole increased eightfold in value, mainly because of oil sales. Oil exports also caused a reduction in the trade deficit by nearly one-third, and the Government expected its 1980-81 budget to be balanced at $1.17 billion. The Port of Douala accounted for about 8 million tons of cargo, or 93% of total maritime traffic for Cameroon. Expansion plans for the port call for an initial increase to 5 million tons, and a cargo handling capacity of 7.5 million tons in 1985 and 10 million tons by 1990. The Port of Victoria will gain importance with the startup of an oil refinery. The country's third seaport at Kribi was used solely for timber shipments, and capacity at the Port was to triple by 1981. The Government operated its own shipping line with six oceangoing freighters. France was the dominant trading partner, accounting for 25%

This paper by Mr Mclvor is yet another contribution to the eternal controversy surrounding the benefits, or otherwise, of high circulating loads in closed circuit grinding. Throughout the paper it is difficult to establish whether the author is referring to effects relating to the mill, classifier, or to the overall circuit. Table 1 is put forward as indicating the advantage of operating at high circulating loads. From the two (it would be interesting to see more) product sizing points provided in each case, the conclusions to be drawn are that cases one and two have very similar size analyses. The third case, however, indicates a much flatter curve, that is to say, higher fines production and a very wide spread of size ranges. If the objective of this circuit is to provide a closely sized product with minimum overground slimes to the downstream process, then it would appear to be the less "efficient" by far. No data is given for product pulp densities either. The term "efficiency" should never be used without a careful and clear definition. In this case, "efficiency" is used to express an apparent percentage reduction in operating work index (Bond) from the measured "standard" at 250% circulat¬ing load operation. Laser surface melting has been conducted on a 304 stainless steel (SS) with the aim of enhancing pitting corrosion resistance of the material. This process involves rapid melting of the material?s surface followed by rapid solidification to refine the microstructure. This includes the dissolution of inclusions such as MnS, FeS, CrxCy, and other minor constituents. The microstructures as a result of laser treatment were observed by means of optical microscope and also confirmed by the XRD. The glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) was utilized for chemical analysis. Changes in hardness were observed by using a Vickers microhardness tester. Pitting corrosion tests on laser treated and untreated samples were conducted according to ASTM G48-92 to evaluate mass loss and pitting morphology. Laser surface melting improved the pitting corrosion resistance of this material in a chloride-containing environment.

Actualmente el geólogo de mina toma información rutinaria, mapea los bancos de la mina, los taladros para voladura y loguea los núcleos de perforación y fragmentos del aire reverso. Para la localización en el campo utiliza un GPS que tiene una estación en tierra que permite triangular en tiempo real. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la importancia de la función del geólogo y las herramientas de campo que utiliza para la exploración y la definición del modelo geológico en la mina Pierina. Así para la digitalización del mapeo geológico utiliza el programa AutoCad, en el caso de mapeo de taladros para voladura emplea un Colector de Datos que posee una hoja de calculo que permite recoger datos del tipo de alteración, porcentaje de arcillas, dureza y tipo de mineralización. Finalmente, la información que genera el geólogo de mina es útil para diferentes usuarios ya que sirve para mejorar el cálculo de reservas, manejar el control eficiente del minado de mineral y desmonte, así como generar el soporte geológico a los geotecnistas responsables del estudio de estabilidad de taludes del tajo abierto, así como desde el punto de vista ambiental es posible definir zonas con potencial de generar drenaje ácido de rocas.

[ ] A period of heavy rains caused the river Adda to flood parts of the Valtellina, one of the Alpine valleys of Northern Italy. The exceptionally high waters put under considerable strain the whole system of embankments and levees controlling the river and protecting the adjacent towns and lands. In some places the water breached and washed away the embankments, submerging large tracts of cultivated land, buildings, roads and railway tracks. The town of Talamona, in the lower Valtellina, was hit particularly hard: in its proximity the river overrun and then washed away 300 m (1,000 ft) of embankment (see vicinity map, fig. 2), depositing large amounts of riverbed debris onto over 400 hectares (1,000 acres) of fertile land.

"Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The relatively low grade and refractory nature of the deposit has been a challenge for efficient processing since the start of mining on the property. Early processing techniques included gravity separation and barrel chlorination. The last operation employed heap leaching in 1985 through 1992. After being closed and reclaimed for over 20 years, the property is poised to re-open and produce once again. In this chapter of the Mine’s legacy, flotation and ultra-fine grinding will be employed to achieve economic extraction of gold and silver from the pyrite. This paper briefly reviews some of the mine’s history, the metallurgical testing, the flowsheet and discusses design considerations.INTRODUCTIONHaile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The last operation employed heap leaching in 1985 through 1992. Since then, the property has been closed and fully reclaimed. Romarco Minerals acquired the property in 2007, and began an exploration program that has delineated over 62 tonnes (+2M ozs.) of gold in reserve at an overall grade of 2 ppm (0.06 opt). This paper provides a brief history of the property, a summary of metallurgical testing, description of the process flowsheet and discusses design considerations.HISTORY1827 – 1837Gold was discovered in creek beds on the Haile property in 1827. The property was owned by Benjamin Haile, and the first few years of production came from placer mining. After gold was discovered in schist beds to the sides of the streams, Haile expanded the operation by leasing 18 meter-square (50 ft.) plots to local planters. These planters used slaves to work the small excavations in the agricultural offseason. The gold ore was taken to arrastras where the free gold was liberated and recovered. The excavations were above the water table, generally less than 18 meters (60 ft.) down, and it was noted then that gold could be found embedded in sulfides and difficult to extract."

"The Sudbury area environment became drastically altered commencing in 1871 with lumbering, repeated fires and early open roasting operations from 1887 to 1929. These combined factors had such a pronounced effect that approximately 24 square miles were totally denuded of any vegetation and 87 square miles were semi-barren to somewhat stressed.The two nickel producing companies in the area have reduced the sulphur dioxide emissions considerably over the years. Falconbridge Limited, alone, reduced sulphur dioxide emissions by 77% from 1971 to 1984.These reductions have resulted in improvements to the air, soil, lake and vegetation quality in the Sudbury area.INTRODUCTIONThe Sudbury area environment became drastically altered commencing in the 1870's with lumbering, repeated fires and early open roasting operations from 1888 to 1929. These combined factors had such a pronounced effect on the Sudbury environment that approximately 24 square miles (64 sq. km.) were totally denuded of any vegetation and 87 square miles (225 sq. km.) were semi-barren.Over the years, the Sudbury area environment has improved considerably. This has been due to emission cutbacks by both Inco Metals and Falconbridge Limited, coupled with industry, government and community reclamation programs. Before the improvements are discussed, a better understanding of the historical degradation is required."

This paper presents and discusses some of the computer models developed and currently used at the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI) of the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). These include the performance models for full and partial face machines. Examples of input and output of these models will be illustrated for typical mining operations by using machines such as Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), Continuous Miners (CM), Marietta borer miners and longwall drum shearers. The general approach to modeling and the available models are discussed and some examples of these models are presented. The comparison between the estimated and achieved performance, as well as the degree of improvement in the performance due to balancing and modification in cutterhead design are also discussed.

"Biotechnological approaches to decommissioning of mine waste management areas are presented in the context of sustainable environmental management. Improved design of waste sites and environmental management paves the way for the application of new technological approaches. Mining wastes are better confined, effluent quantity is reduced and the quality is expected to improve in the future. The biologically mediated treatments focus on the creation of conditions inside the waste management area which lead to the confinement of the contaminants in the inactive tailings ponds and seepage collection ponds, as well as pits or other disturbed areas which were part of the operating conditions.Biogeochemical reactions lead to three fundamental water treatment steps mediated biogeochemically , alterations in chemistry which lead to formation of particles, which then have to flocculate and be assisted to collect in the bottom of the ponds. Microbially active sediments are installed to assist particulate formation and serve as sinks for metals. In deeper sediment strata, stable forms of metals are created. Biological polishing is used to collect the particulates and relegate them to the sediment. Examples will be given of the application of these processes, to waste rock piles, open pits and tailings ponds. This paper attempts to show that, through the integration of applied biotechnological advances and the application of new approaches to decommissioning, reductions of environmental impacts by mining are possible. * Note: this paper has been presented at the 13th Annual Meeting of BIOMINETIntroductionThe role of biotechnology in decommissioning of mining waste management areas should be placed in the context of sustainable development. The Bureau of Mines constructed a fully automated pilot plant facility to study the hydraulic transportation of solids through a lock hopper feeder system. An equation for the energy requirements to transport coarse solids hydraulically proved applicable to this system. Optimum velocities were obtained for limestone, mine refuse, and bituminous coal. The experimental data, calculations, and graphs show the effect of velocity, specific gravity, and solids concentration on head loss and power requirements. Other data were obtained and evaluated to determine the effect of particle size on head loss. Results also are given for (a) tests using friction reducing polymers; (b) tests using seven test sections of steel alloy pipe to determine their wear characteristics; (c) tests to determine spatial segregation of moving particles; and (d) tests to determine the effect of shape, size, and specific gravity on particle velocity in a horizontal pipeline. The lock hopper feeder system was found practical for continuous hydraulic transportation of the material types and size ranges tested.
