"Giant Yellowknife Mines Limited (Giant) has been producing gold since 1948. Located at Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, see Figure 1, the mine processes approximately 1,200 short tons per day of 0.23 ounce gold per ton of ore.The majority of the gold in the ore is sub-microscopic and associated within the mineral arsenopyrite. This association complicates the extraction method since straight cyanidation will only recover 30% of the gold. The operations at Giant involve four essential steps, with an overall recovery of 87%. The steps shown in Figure 2 are crushing and grinding, flotation, roasting and cyanidation. These processes result in a number of effluent waste streams characterized in Table 1. These streams are combined and sent to a tailings storage pond for subsequent treatment prior to discharge to the environment.Giant is located just north of the 62nd parallel where winter temperatures drop to -40°C for extended periods. This entails storing effluent in dams over the seven month winter period for treatment during the relatively short summer season.The treatment method currently employed at Giant is an ""alkaline chlorination-arsenic precipitation-flocculation"" process. The pond water is subjected to three phases of treatment prior to being discharged to the environment as shown in Figure 3."

Experiments with various industrial cathodes ranging from 35 wt.% to 100 wt.% graphitic and fully graphitized carbons were carried out in a laboratory aluminum electrolysis cell. Sodium and cryolite bath penetration into the cathode samples was measured by XRD and SEM-EDS analysis. For a higher cryolite ratio in the bath, the cathodes with lower graphitic carbons exhibited more sodium penetration than the fully graphitized. The increased graphitization in the cathode materials can reduce Na, NaF and Na3AlF6 penetration. SEM-EDS inspection reveals that the sodium and fluorides penetration within the cathode samples has different patterns for varying graphitization of the carbon materials. XRD quantitative analysis indicates that there is a large percentage of Na3AlF6 in the penetrated bath. The results can provide useful information for quality evaluation of the industrial cathode products.

"Coarse ore sorting is here defined as the physical separation of a mixture of coarse (+3/8 inch) ore particles into two or more separate groups of total value greater than that of the unsorted ore. An ore will probably be sortable if the geology of the orebody and the mining practices employed meet conditions outlined in this paper.The paper points out how sorting can substantially reduce tonnage variable operating costs because sorting can double the mill head grade of amenable ores by rejecting waste rock from the mine output. The effect of sorting on ore reserves is outlined. It is also suggested that sorting is a low cost alternative to conventional expansion.The mode of operation of the Ore Sorters Kadel 13 Photometric and MK VI A Radiometric sorters is detailed. The report concludes with detailed descriptions of the photometric sorting plant operated by the Doornfontein Gold Mining Company is South Africa and the Radiometric Sorting Plant presently under construction at the Schwartzwalder mine of Cotter Corporation in Colorado."

This paper deals with the large iron ore concentrating plant owned by the Iron Ore Company of Canada. The plant is part of the Carol Project, which is being developed in the Wabush area of western Labrador. The mining and milling operations were officially opened in July of this year. The handling of fine material has always been considered a serious operational problem. The crushing, grinding and sizing of 50,000 tons of iron ore per day, in a dry state, could present sizeable problems in maintenance and orderliness. The operation, as a whole, embraces many recent developments in the iron ore industry. Mining operations include the latest techniques of jet piercing and blasting. Primary crushing involves a single crusher, which handles the complete production. Grinding of the ore includes the latest concepts of dry autogenous grinding in air-swept mills. The actual concentration of the ore is per-formed, in the wet state, by the use of spiral concentrators, with provision for possible flotation or magnetic separation, if required. The upgraded concentrates are either stored or pelletized, prior to shipment by rail to Seven Islands.

The monthly summary of the climatological record for the demonstration mine is presented in Table 1. Tear normal temperatures occurred throughout the growing season. From May to October precipitation was more than normal except in June when it was 2.55 inches below normal. Corn and soybean plantings were delayed until June 2-7 because of wet field conditions. This is about one month later than normal for corn planting. Insect infestations were much less than those encountered in previous years. Cutworm activity was not noticed and alfalfa weevil infestation were small and patchy. Stalk rot in corn was a significant problem at harvest and resulted in much Milk lodging. The wet and generally overcast conditions of July, August and September were bend 10 beneficial al to certain plant disease organisms. For example, pumpkins planted in a small garden area at the demonstration mine did not ripen because of a powdery mildew resulting from overcast, wet conditions. Field operations and row crop plantings were greatly delayed by wet field conditions. It was difficult to plant by conventional tillage because the soil remained soft and sticky where the moldboard plow had been used. "An AG/SAG mill was commissioned at the Brunswick Mine concentrator in October 1998. This paper discusses the original liner design for the bi-directional AG/SAG mill, observed liner wear, subsequent liner design modifications, and benefits. The mill liners consist of steel top hat shell liners, steel end liners, rubber grates and rubber lined pulp lifters.Lifter profile and plate thickness measurements were made on monthly shop days. Trends of wear rates were used to project when liners required replacement. Wear profile information was also used to determine where liner re-design would improve wear life or minimize scrap loss. Charge motion simulation modeling was used as a tool to assist liner design modifications.INTRODUCTIONThe Noranda Inc. Brunswick Mine, located near Bathurst, New Brunswick, is a large underground lead/zinc mine with a nominal production rate of 10,000 tonnes per day. The Brunswick concentrator commenced operation in 1964 with conventional surface crushing followed by rod and ball milling to reduce run of mine ore to the required size to feed two parallel flotation circuits. In 1998 the AG (autogenous grinding) mill was commissioned for a nominal production rate of 9,000 tonnes per day replacing two surface crushing plants, three rod mills and three primary ball mills. In May of 1999 the mining rate was increased and the service of the AG mill was changed to a SAG (semi-autogenous grinding) mill with the addition of 4 inch steel balls (4% volume). The mill operates in closed circuit with 0.66 meter horizontal cyclones to produce a ground product of 90 micron nominal size (K80).The AG/SAG mill liners are steel (Norsteel, chrome-moly steel) with rubber grates and rubber lined pulp lifters.The original liner design was based on studying other AG/SAG mills and recommendations by the liner supplier, Norcast. Design factors taken into account were total cost of lining (including material and labour), protection of mill shell and impact on operating performance."

Ore from Henderson’s 7700 Southwest panel cave is transported between the production and truck haulage levels through a series of orepasses. A typical orepass complex consolidates dump points from four production drifts into two long bored raises feeding into a single truckloading chute. The system typically covers a vertical extent of 200 m and a lateral extent of 90 m. In the process of commissioning several initial orepass complexes, challenges with preferential draw in the long bored raises were observed. Preferential draw occurs when one long orepass mobilises much sooner and/or flows significantly faster than the other orepass. This has negative implications for orepass availability in the production drifts. As future mining at Henderson relies on the construction and use of such orepass systems, the development of appropriate design criteria and practical solutions to existing flow problems was necessary.A series of PFC3D numerical models were developed to assist in identifying the factors influencing preferential draw and possible corrective measures. The models helped to identify two primary factors that caused the preferential effect: the relative elevation of the brow at the bottom of each long bored raise, and the location of the bin used to funnel fragmented rock from both raises into the chute. This paper covers the initial design of the orepass complexes at Henderson, results of the numerical models, mitigation work done to date on existing orepass complexes, and design criteria for future construction.CITATION:Gresham, J and Turichshev, A, 2016. The ‘Metallurgical Operations’ Department of Grinaker-LTA Process Engineering (GLTA) currently undertakes then primary mining as well as the re-deposition of tailings forTicor South Africa (Ticor) at their Hillendale mine near Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The mining plant, which was designed by GLTA on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis, is capable of mining 780 000 tons per month of ROM material which is then pumped to the Primary Wet Plant for treatment by Ticor. Hydraulic mining via high pressure water cannons and subsequent transfer of the heavy mineral slurry at an RD of between 1.35 and 1.48, has never before been undertaken successfully at this level of production on an in situ reserve. The presentation will take the form of a case study in which the unique site operating conditions will be detailed and discussed, as will the innovative process and engineering solutions employed by GLTA to overcome the engineering and production challenges encountered. In order to protect the intellectual property involved in this operation, this paper is fairly general in nature, and attempts merely to provide the reader with a broad perspective understanding of the operation, and some of the difficulties encountered during the early stages of production.

This work presents and discusses the influence of the surface tension (gLV) of methanol/water mixtures on the flotation response of apatite versus gangue minerals conditioned with flotation reagents (75 g/t cornstarch and 100 g/t Berol 867) at pH 10.6. Berol 867 is a collector composed of sodium alkyl sarcosinate plus nonionic surfactant. The highest Schulz efficiency of separation (recovery of apatite minus recovery of gangue) was achieved at ?51.0 mN/m. The critical surface tension of wettability (gC) of apatite was found to occur at 34.7 mN/m when determined by means of gamma flotation experiments, and it was 33.9 mN/m when determined by Zisman?s approach.

Unlike molecular high explosives, commercial explosives based on ammonium nitrate do not detonate ideally according to the theoretical model for steady state, one-dimensional detonation. One of the reasons for this deviation from ideal detonation is the slower chemical reaction, due to less intimate contact between the oxidiser and fuel components. It is well known that the inclusion of gas pockets, such as microballoons, in the formulation of ammonium nitrate based emulsions and watergels enhances the performance of these explosives. Various different interpretations of the “hot spot” theory have been proposed to explain this phenomenon.

The application of aluminum matrix composites, due to their unique properties, is significantly growing in the variety of industries such as aerospace and automobile. In comparison to other light metals, such as magnesium and titanium, aluminum is lower in price. These are the advantages that this metal dominates the others. In this research, first by applying the lost foam casting method, the SiCp/A356 composite was cast in the bottom and side gate conditions with 690°C and volume fraction of 10%. Furthermore, the effects of reinforcement particles (60 µm, 75 µm) were examined. The results present the particles distribution in the side gate methods is more homogeneous than the bottom gate casting method. Also, by increasing the particles sizes, the fading rate in the side gate are reduced from 22% to 19%, as well as from 26.4% to 25.4% in the bottom gate. The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

Reliable estimation of in situ stress is a major step in the analysis and design of underground excavations in rock, particularly for evaluating the stability of underground structures to prevent failure or collapse. In the last ten years, the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) has studied and developed an AE stress measurement technique using orientated core named the WASM AE method. It allows the determination of a representative and detailed knowledge of the in situ stress field during the early stages of a project (such as mine feasibility studies), even in areas where development access is not yet available. The method has been used for in situ stress measurement at more than 80 mine sites worldwide with over 200 individual stress measurements carried out to date. This paper describes the sample collection, sample testing and reconciliation of results for very deep measurements carried out at the Craig-Onaping mine complex in Sudbury Canada. The results constitute the deepest measurements undertaken to date at the WA School of Mines and indicate that the main principal stress is horizontal and oriented parallel to a common regional sub trend in a NE/SW direction.

Cerâmicas argilosas foram processadas com adição de até 30% em peso de resíduos de pedra ornamental e queimadas a 900, 950, 1000 e 1050°C. Esta adição contribuiu para ajustar a plasticidade do corpo da argila e aumentar a densidade seca aparente, que ocasiona um empacotamento mais elevado das partículas. A cerâmica adicionada diminuiu sua retração linear com a quantidade de resíduos e evita assim alterações dimensionais excessivas nos produtos finais. Outra vantagem foi a diminuição na absorção de água com resíduos adicionados. As resistências à flexão e à compressão sofreram uma diminuição associada à adição de resíduos. Isto foi atribuído à grande quantidade de quartzo nos resíduos, que gera rachaduras e enfraquece o produto final. No entanto, até 30% em peso de adição a resistência mecânica, de acordo com a norma ASTM, é ainda satisfatória para utilização como cerâmica de pavimentação.

The results of precious metal exploration carried out by Amoco Minerals New Zealand Limited over EL 33-137 in the Longwood Range, Southland, are described. Widespread gold and platinum in alluvial deposits on the perimeter of the range and anomalous gold in stream sediments on its southern and south western flanks indicates that the precious metals were probably derived from erosion of the mafic rocks of the Longwood Complex.

In recent years, tellurium has been extensively used in the manufacture of semiconductor materials. For this type of application, high-purity tellurium is required. Selenium, lead and silicon are usually the main impurities in tellurium. During the electrolytic refining of copper, tellurium gold and silver are collected in the anode slimes. A pyrometallurgical treatment is used to recover gold and silver from the decopperized anode slimes whereas tellurium is oxidized and skimmed off from the refining furnace as a Na2CO3-based slag. In the slag, tellurium is present as sodium tellurite (Na2TeO3), which is further water-leached from the slag. The first step in the conventional process for tellurium recovery consists of the precipitation of the tellurium contained in the leaching solution as tellurium dioxide (TeO2). The solid TeO2 is then dissolved under acidic conditions for its further reduction with sulfur dioxide gas (SO2). In this paper, an alternative route for tellurium production is presented in which a sodium tellurate [Na2TeO4] intermediate is obtained by oxidation of the sodium tellurite in an alkaline solution following the water leaching step. Sodium tellurate is then dissolved in acid media and high-purity tellurium is obtained by reduction with SO2 gas. Experimental tests under laboratory conditions indicate that the novel process yields higher precipitation selectivity for tellurium than the conventional process. A comparison of its efficiency concerning impurities co-precipitation with respect to the conventional process is discussed.

The U. S. Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 placed limits on the permissible concentration of airborne respirable coal mine dust. Evidence exists which suggests that the effects on health of respirable coal mine dust may depend on both host factors and dust properties other than concentration. Dust particle size, shape, density, specific surface area and chemical composition are among the dust parameters of interest in an epidemiological investigation of coal workers' pneumoconiosis and coal miner exposure to mine dust. The purpose of this investigation was to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of techniques to determine selected properties of respirable coal mine dust. An approved underground horizontal elutriator which samples air at 36 cfm was designed, fabricated and utilized in this study to collect respirable coal mine dust in three mines representing the Pittsburgh, Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning coal seams. Analytical procedures for measurement of respirable dust sample particle size, density, random projected area, total surface area and chemical composition are presented. Results of analyses of three samples collected in each mine are presented. Up to five full work shifts of sampling were required to accumulate approximately five grams of respirable coal mine dust in each sample. Statistical tests were applied to determine the significance of differences between properties of dust samples collected in the same mine and between arithmetic mean values of dust properties representing three samples collected in each mine. This international case study focuses on the rigorous geotechnical interaction and results of a soil improvement program utilized to mitigate consolidation settlements of over 1.5 m [5.0 ft]. The extreme settlement results from very deep, nearly normally consolidated clay and the required high floor loading of a new Logistics Park near Bogota, Colombia. The general subsurface conditions consist of very soft clay extending to depths beyond the 50 m [164.0 ft] explored. A required 1.2 m [3.9 ft] thick fill combined with high floor loads resulted in an applied areal load of approximately 7 ton/m2 [1300 psf] (equivalent to about 4.5m [15.0 ft] of fill). Langan recommended performing a test section to validate the initial consolidation settlement calculations and evaluate possible optimization of the prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) spacing and length. The test section sizing was designed to accurately represent the stresses at depth of the future structures. Extreme settlements of over 1.5 m [5.0 ft] in the center and large differential settlements of over 0.6 m [2.0 ft] were measured between the center and corners of the test section over a relatively short test time. Discussion on the methodology, instrumentation, measured results and future optimization are presented. The recommended soil improvement varied from the standard approaches typically utilized in the area. PROJECT LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION The project site is immediately north-northwest of the city of Bogota in the Bogota Valley. The site is bordered with, and has historically been, farming land bordered to the south by the El Rosal-Bogotá highway. The overall site encompasses about 570,000 m2 [141.0 acres] of gross area and about 484,000 m2 [119.6 acres] of net buildable area. The warehouse complex will consist of 10 very large warehouses with footprints ranging from about 15,000 m2 [3.7 acres] to 30,000 m2 [7.4 acres]. The total building area is about 210,000 m2 [51.9 acres] with most of the remaining areas being paved principal drives, truck parking or administrative parking. The topography of the site is relatively flat and close to final grade in roadway areas. However, the warehouse floors will be raised about 1.2 m [3.9 ft] (equivalent to about 2 t/m2 [370 psf] considering engineered fill) to allow for truck docking. In addition, the design floor loads are heavy and estimated to be up to 5 t/m2 [930 psf] and equivalent to about 2.5m [8.2 ft] of fill. Geotechnical conditions at the site are very weak at depths of 50 meters [165 ft] or more, with soft compressible clays comprising the majority of the soil profile. The Bogota Valley is composed in some areas of very deep alluvial deposits. These deposits have been classified as an important challenge and limitation to the development of high/heavy structures such as the project in question for many years (Orozco, 2006). Soft clay deposits have been encountered even beyond depths of 100 meters [328 ft] in some regions of the Bogota Valley (Sanz, 1994). Extreme settlements can be expected if extensive and high permanent loads (above preconsolidation stress levels) are supported in these thick alluvial deposits.
