En los últimos años la minería peruana aportó más del 50% en el ingreso de divisas en nuestro país. Sin embargo, este aporte puede aumentar a través de nuevas inversiones o re-inversiones y generar mayor producción, superando la crisis económica en nuestro país. En ese sentido, el presente trabajo revisa las normas que rigen la minería, dictando las necesarías para crear una política minera que a un largo plazo mejore las espectativas de inversión en el país. Cabe agregar que la cantidad de inversiones de la minería es un factor determinante para el nivel de explotación de las reservas minerales. Por tanto, es necesario analizar los problemas y eliminar el riesgo de inversión que pueda generar dicha inversión frente a cualquier a otro tipo de financiación.

Every mineral project or mine is based on a geologic entity-an ore (mineral) deposit. A well-defined mineral deposit and its associated geologic characteristics are the only aspects of a project that cannot be altered. Mine plans can be modified to exploit the deposit using alternative approaches and yielding similar results. A variety of processing methods also are often available producing generally comparable results. Major modifications can be made to other aspects of the project without substantially changing project economics. However, all engineering and metallurgical aspects of a mine must be accommodated to the spe¬cific location and geologic characteristics of the deposit. Geologic data and interpretations form the foundation for both mine evaluation and mine production by providing esti¬mates of reserves and essential information for mine planning and process design or control. Proper geologic work requires a keen awareness of and an ability to anticipate the technical requirements of geotechnical engineers, hydrologists, mining engineers, metallurgists, and other specialists. The petrographer engaged in examining the products resulting from the beneficiation of ores, and rock minerals is constantly required to develop new means acid methods of assaying microscopically the results of such operations. From time to time investigators have published descriptions of apparatus that have aided in solving problems in processes of physical separation. Thus, in 1919, Coghill and Bonardi 3/ published a paper covering the application of the binocular microscope and camera lucida to the microscopic analysis of pulverized ores. Similar work has been published by Schneiderhohn 4/ Schwartz 5/, and Head and his associates 6/, 7/, 8/. The present paper goes further and considers application of the polarizing comparison-microscope to problems directly concerned with mineral dressing where it is desirable to compare analogous products, and in addition it suggests new uses in various related fields. This work was conducted under the cooperative agreements of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama.

A mineral resource survey of the 940-square-mile (2,434 km2) Hells Canyon study area, which includes Hells Canyon Wilderness, Snake and Rapid Wild and Scenic River's, and adjoining roadless lands in Oregon and Idaho, indicates the area is highly mineralized. Thirty-four lode deposits within the study area have resources totaling about 31 million tons (28 million t) containing copper, silver, zinc, gold, and lead; another 42 lodes, not sufficiently exposed to allow resource estimates, are believed to have mineral potential. The most important deposits are copper-, silver-, zinc-, gold-, and lead-bearing volcanogenic occurrences, followed by silver-and copper-bearing contact replacement (tactite) deposits; other lode occurrences are relatively unimportant. The most important placer deposits occur at Dry Diggins; placers along the Snake River are small and scattered. The study area has extensive deposits of limestone and sand and gravel; it has little potential for energy resources.

A Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to determine the effect of specimen volume on the apparent tensile strength of disks of St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Lithonia granite, and Rockville granite. The investigation used a technique developed by the Bureau to determine apparent tensile strength. Because the test specimens were selected without macroscopic defects, that is, cracks, joints, and planes of weakness, the strength variations are solely due to microscopic features. Several replications of each test were performed. Data for each set of specimens were fitted to a power law of the form y = axb, where y = apparent tensile strength, x = specimen volume, and a and b are constants. This power law is essentially a form of Weibull's theory. The average coefficients of correlation for St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Lithonia granite, and Rockville granite were 0.85, 0.53, and 0.78, respecitvely. In all cases a decrease in strength with increasing volume was noted; in the extreme case, a decrease of 40 pct was noted with an elevenfold increase in volume. The decrease in strength with increasing specimen volume is explained in terms of Weibull's theory.

The closing of the gap in the European waterway- net is one of the big and challenging traffic projects following the German reunification. The water canals in the North German plain connect the Rhine river, the border between Germany and France, with the Oder, the German border river to Poland. As early as in the 30's of the 19th century the planning and construction of a ship- lift and a canal bridge started, in order to close this last big gap in the system between the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe- Havel Canal near Magdeburg. This main waterway connects the West of Germany, known for its coal mines and steel mills, with the capital Berlin, and from there it goes on into Poland. The building activities started in 1934 but came to a complete stop in 1942 because of the war. The communist government in East Germany was not interested in continuing this huge project, including the ship lock Rothensee, the canal bridge crossing the river Elbe, the former border river between West and East Germany, and the lock Hohenwarthe due to lack of political backing along with low construction capacity.

A new concept of roof support by "sonic pin-setting" is introduced. Initial experiments indicate that this method could introduce tremendous benefits for the coal mining industry by making roof-bolting a faster, safer, and more economical operation. A theoretical model is presented for describing the process and an experimental machine was built. The present testing results are included.

IN crushing and grinding the larger particles are more exposed to the work input. They absorb most of the work and protect the smaller neighboring particles from destructive contact with the crushing surfaces or grinding media. The importance of this exposure differential upon the reduction efficiency and product size distribution has long been recognized. Unfortunately, there has heretofore been no direct method of evaluating it, and such indirect methods as observing the slope of the plotted product size distribution line have been used as an indication. In this presentation the Third Theory of Comminution' has been used, together with the exponential formula for size distribution, to evaluate the ex- posure ratio and exposure constant and to illustrate examples of their utility in crushing and grinding applications. The exposure ratio Er varies from zero to unity. It is zero when the product particles are all of one size, and it is unity when the work input has been equally distributed among all particle sizes. It can readily be found from screen analyses plotted according to the Third Theory. The exposure constant K is derived from the reciprocal of the exposure ratio Er. It permits more consistent predictions of size distributions and evaluation of many factors concerned in size reduction operations. The Third Theory1 states that the specific work input required for size reduction is inversely proportional to the square root of the product size less the work required to form the feed. La Oroya zinc ferrite (19.5% Zn, 26.6% Fe, 0.052% Ga, 0.075% In) was roasted with coal under conditions more oxidizing than normally used in a Waelz kiln, and the roasted residues were leached with 200 g/L H2SO4. Overall zinc recoveries of up to 97% were achieved, with 35% of the zinc reporting to the fume after roasting at 1,100°C with a bituminous coal addition of 20%. Under these conditions, 93.2% of the Cd, 13.4% of the Cu, 33% of the Ga, 61% of the In and 18.2% of the Pb were recovered either in the fume or in the leach solution. At 2006 metal prices, the value of the recovered metals is comparable to that obtained from commercial Waelz kiln processing of this residue. Zinc in the franklinite (ZnFe2O4) mineral is reduced to zinc vapor, and, after oxidation, some of the zinc is found as ZnO or as Zn2SiO4 in the roasted residue. Iron reacts to form either hematite (Fe2O3) or magnetite (Fe3O4), with no metallic iron detected in the roasted residue, and less than 2% of the iron is solubilized during leaching. The residue produced after roasting and leaching is, therefore, much more stable than the residue from Waelz kiln processing and should be suitable for disposal in a landfill.

Certain roof shales in coal mines deteriorate upon exposure to the atmosphere, causing difficulties in the mining operations and adding to the cost. This report presents the results of both field investigations, in a West Virginia mine, and laboratory studies on the effects of atmospheric moisture on roof shales. Based on these observations a conceptual procedure is presented on how shale deterioration might be predicted during exploration, and guidelines are given as to how air tempering or conditioning chambers may be designed to reduce moisture effects. Recommendations for further studies are included. An annotated bibliography of the literature constitutes the second volume.

This document presents the explosion-proof enclosures used severity of certification tests solutions to linear transient thermal and stress analyses of in underground mines. The results were used to assess the for enclosure windows relative to possible loads occurring in the actual mine environment. Cast iron electric light enclosures with polycarbonate and glass windows were analyzed under steady state thermal conditions (light burning) and for thermal shocks corresponding to an internal explosion (ignition of volatile mine gas) or external quenching (mine water spray system). Thermal shocks to the enclosure, caused by ignited gases or water spray, were applied via a series of load steps in the transient analysis. The temperature dependence of material I properties and of the film heat transfer coefficients were included in the model. The work demonstrates that thermally induced stresses are strongly influenced by the way the window is mounted in the enclosure. It also shows that the MSHA Thermal Shock Test, if performed on an unsupported lens (or window), produces lower stresses than the lens (or window) may experience in the mine environment.

During the initial portion of the contract several alternative designs were considered, as set out step by step in the monthly reports. The conclusions reached during this period were - to use on INTERDATA Model 70 as the system minicomputer - to drop the idea of multiplexing and digitizing the inclinometer outputs downhole due to the greater complexity and cost that that alternative would imply - to use a multitasking software monitor to enable synchronization of the several tasks that the system would have to perform simultaneously - to use a common controller for all I/0 devices except those which were available off the shelf from Interdata - to use a sheave counter to meter off equal increments of probe travel, but to supplement this information with the use of an encoder on the winch drum in order to be able to measure total probe travel unambiguously. - to place all I10 device interfaces in a bin connected to the common controller. During this period considerable attention was dedicated to the design of the mechanical components contemplated it the original contract. Of these, only those required for vertical probe was complete at the time that it was decided to forego the mechanical subsystem and concentrate on developing the necessary electronics and software to interface with the probes being developed by the Bureau of Mines.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to investigate methods for desilicating sodium aluminate solution derived from leaching a limestone-anorthosite sinter with 10-pct Na2C03 solution. Desilication tests were made at atmospheric pressure to determine the effects of time and additions of lime and desilication residues. A two-stage, countercurrent desilication procedure was developed to reduce the Si02 content sufficiently to meet specifications for cell-grade A1203. Both stages were conducted at boiling temperatures at atmospheric pressure. Reagent lime was charged as desilication seed to the partially desilicated solution in the second stage, and a product (desilication residue) precipitated by the lime addition was charged to the freshly leached solution in the first stage. Average A1203 loss in the desilication circuit was 5.8 pct, and the product solution contained less than 0.04 g/l Si02. Complete precipitation of A1203 by carbonation resulted in a hydrate containing less than 0.01 pct Si02. Calcination of this hydrate would produce A1203 meeting the 0.015 pct Si02 specification for cell-grade material.

Unverified reports of rare earth element (REE) concentrations in gold placers and radioactive mineral prospects in the Zane Hills were investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as part of the Alaska critical minerals program. REE is reported to occur in dredge concentrates at the Hogatza mine and up to 1.2 pct REE was previously analyzed in alkalic syenite (bostonite) dikes marginal to the pluton. In addition, numerous thorium-rich veins, explored for their uranium content but unevaluated for REE, occur on the western margin of the Zane Hills. The Bureau mapped and sampled all of the reported or suspected REE occurrences. Dredge concentrates contain abundant uranothorianite, a mineral species which incorporates cerium subgroup REE. Bostonite dikes occur in conjunction with a multi-phased zoned alkalic intrusion, however, no significant REE concentrations were found. Thorium-rich veins contain nil to 0.5 pct Y but resource potential is limited by this relatively low grade, the ultimate low tonnage potential, and the lack of uranium as a major economic element. The Zane Hills exhibit attractive exploration targets for uranium deposits, primarily in a sedimentary form. Gold may be found peripheral to the pluton in both placer and lode deposits. Resource potential of REE, however, appears limited to a placer by-product of REE-Zr-Ti that is recoverable only during large scale gold placer mining. Placer exploration of the lower Wheeler and Dakli Creeks is suggested.

This makes blasting a dirty word to most geologists, particularly in narrow vein gold mines. A 1% increase in gold recovery may be worth $1 M extra revenue to a large mine.

La explotación del yacimiento aurífero de San Antonio de Poto se realiza a través del uso de equipos pesados en el movimiento de tierra y plantas portátiles y gravimétricas en la concentración, así como los canales de refinería y petróleo. En este sentido, el presente trabajo señala los métodos de minado utilizados en la explotación de la mina San Antonio como son el método artesanal, semi-mecanizado y mecanizado. Para la remoción del mineral de cada método de minado, se utiliza la perforación y voladura. En cuanto a la evacuación del mineral grueso de los métodos de minado semi-mecanizado y mecanizado, se utiliza la locomotora con vagón. Finalmente, el empleo e equipos pesados y plantas móviles establece la necesidad de optimizar el empleo para justificar su inversión.

A lightweight compressed oxygen rescue breathing apparatus (RBA) for rescue and recovery missions has been developed by Mine Safety Appliances Company under contract to the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus is a positive pressure, closed circuit system of 4 hours duration. The weight of the complete apparatus, including an optional cooler, is slightly over 30 pounds. Weight reduction over currently available RBAs is achieved through the use of lithium hydroxide for scrubbing C02 in place of conventional chemicals and the use of a composite glass fiber/ aluminum shell cylinder for oxygen storage in place of steel cylinders. Positive pressure is maintained in the breathing circuit at all times by applying a constant spring force to the breathing bag. The harness has been designed to reduce the work of the wearer by redistributing the weight of the apparatus to the wearer's hips.
