Two samples of the Lower Hartshorne (Spadra) bed were collected: A sample of the raw coal with the machine cuttings excluded, and a sample of the machine cuttings exclusively. Analysis of the 5-inch by 200-mesh size fraction of the raw coal, excluding machine cuttings, showed that a product meeting minimum quality specifications could be produced by washing at 1.60 specific gravity, yielding a theoretical 93.7 percent of clean coal. A negligible amount of near-gravity material at the separation gravity indicated an easy washing problem. The sample of machine cuttings had a maximum size of 2 inches and contained about 50 percent ash. Washability tests of the 2-inch by 200-mesh size fraction indicated that a theoretical yield of 30.0 percent of specification-grade coal could be achieved by washing at 1.49 specific gravity. As the machine cuttings represent an estimated 10 percent of the total coal mined, their inclusion in the mine output would increase the theoretical net yield of salable coal by only 3.7 percent. Because the machine cuttings contained a high percentage of sink 1.80 specific-gravity material, they had neither an effect on the separating gravity required to clean the raw coal nor on the difficulty of separation. Gabbing underground versus transporting the cut-tings to the surface for disposal or washing either separately or combined with the raw coal involves a number of practical, economic; and intangible factors; hence, no specific recommendations could be made. Portable communications equipment is becoming increasingly important in underground mining. Proper selection of microphones and hearing devices to be part of these communication systems is essential if the messages are to be transmitted intelligibly. In this program a thorough study of the requirements for these transducers was made with respect to intelligibility, mechanical configuration, human factors and safety. A computer analysis was made to predict how several combinations of transducers would perform at typical mining noise levels. A survey has been made of those microphones and hearing devices on the market today that might be applicable to the miner communication system. Several systems are proposed and evaluated.

A leaching column technique that produces effluent similar in quality to coal mine drainage in the Eastern Interior Basin has been developed. The columns are charged with 1000 grams of crushed overburden and cycled through the leaching process once a week for twelve weeks. Inter-relationships among the important chemical constituents are very similar to those present in actual mine drainage waters, but the overall concentrations of ion are more dilute in the leachates. Multiplying the leachate concentrations by a factor of 4.5 gives values similar to mine waters. Available data suggests that each of the leaching cycles represents about three years of natural weathering, so that the leaching technique can predict the evolution of the mire drainage water over a time span of nearly 40 years. Use of the leaching technique with drill core samples should provide a method of approximating mine drainage quality in advance of mining and should be quite useful in identifying potentially toxic units in the overburden. However, the results should he considered to be a 'worst case' situation because the technique' does not consider the effects of reclamation.

Heat-dried municipal sludge was applied to a barren burned anthracite refuse bank in 1974. Sludge was applied at rates of 0, 40, 75, and 150 dry metric tons per hectare" Ten species of trees were planted and five species of grasses and legumes were seeded for evaluation. One plot was also irrigated with sewage effluent. The 150 t/ha sludge application rate produced the best overall herbaceous vegetation growth response. The 40 and 75 t/ha sludge application rates produced the best tree seedling growth response. Foliar analyses for trace metals indicated no phytotoxity problems. Analyses of leachate water at the three-foot soil depth indicated that the sludge applications did not impair water quality. Results of the study indicate that treated municipal sludge can be used to revegetate land disturbed by mining activities without adverse effects on the vegetation or water quality.

Several underground coal mines currently operating in the Beckley District of West Virginia are experiencing serious roof and floor problems. A significant portion of the estimated two billion tons of coal resources may be lost as a result of these ground control problems. Preliminary studies by the Bureau of Mines indicated that these problems are due in part to a high horizontal stress field. During this contract study, a field program was conducted to quantify the horizontal in situ stress. A total of 14 overcoring sites (using the Bureau of Mines strain-relief overcoring technique) in five mines were drilled producing 53 data sets. Analysis of the data was done to provide in situ horizontal stresses for each of the five mine, and for the district as a whole. Stress data indicate horizontal stresses far in excess of that predicted by theory and in some cases, up to six times the estimated vertical stress. In addition to the field testing, a detailed computer modeling study was conducted using finite element and boundary integral (displacement discontinuity) methods. Verification of in situ stresses was obtained by the models and analysis of various development geometries, mining methods and remedial techniques were conducted. Recommendations for reducing ground control problems and future studies are presented.

An electrically powered methane sampling system for application on mining machines was designed, fabricated and laboratory tested. The system will sequentially draw sample air at a controlled rate from up to three machine positions across the mine face and deliver the air to either an approved methane monitor, methanometer or flame safety lamp. The prime considerations in the design were to provide an intrinsically safe, water and dust resistant control box and an explosion-proof power box capable of being operated from the various mining power sources. The power box contains an internal battery that provides operating power prior to mining machine start-up and alter machine shut-down. The internal battery is recharged automatically when mining machine power is available.

The paper examines the role of chain pillars in longwall mining layouts as used in several countries. The application of chain pillars in relation to their expected design role is discussed. An important feature is the specification of the pillar design to meet strata loading conditions as imposed by the mining and geological setting. The paper relates longwall width and chain pillar configurations to pillar size to satisfy anticipated loading and strength expectations. Laboratory work is referred to which examines criteria for pillar stability. Comments are made regarding the application of the findings presented in the paper, to different situations involving the use of chain pillars in longwall and shortwall mining systems.

The Bureau of Mines investigated hot-rolling and forging characteristics of experimental ductile iron castings, both sand and permanent-mold, made with charges containing up to 70 pct foundry pig iron and 95 pct steelmaking pig iron. Between 1,550° and 1,950° F, most castings could be rolled to 90-pct reduction or forged to 70-pct reduction without serious cracking. Charge and composition have less bearing on workability than on subsequent properties. Permanent mold castings could be worked as readily as sand castings at 1,750° and 1,950° F. Plasticity improved with temperature. Small billets were also forged cold to 50-pct reduction without cracking. With equivalent nodularity, composition affects properties of wrought materials by altering matrix structure and strength. Properties vary with reduction and improve with increasing working temperature. Rolled material has high strength and anisotropy, and low ductility, particularly in the trans-verse direction. Annealing reduces strength and improves ductility, but anisotropy persists. At 70-pct reduction, impact resistance in the longitudinal direction is about twice that in the transverse. Annealing roughly doubles impact resistance. Deformation enhances damping capacity. The feasibility of die-forging and bar-rolling of ductile iron was evaluated in trial tests conducted under a Bureau contract. Although workability and ductility of ductile iron are inferior to those of steel, more advantage could be taken of ductile iron's plasticity to work rough shapes to final dimensions.

Neste trabalho foi avaliada a desnitrogenação ao longo do tratamento no Desgaseificador a vácuo – RH2 da Usiminas, a partir da amostragem de 10 corridas de aço estrutural para chapa grossa de classe de resistência mecânica de 50 kgf/mm2 microligado com nióbio e titânio, de composição química e em condições de processo similares. Foram retiradas amostras de aço nos tempos 0, 5, 10, 15 e 20 minutos de cada corrida. Os dados foram tratados em dois grupos baseado no teor inicial de nitrogênio. Para o grupo de corridas com o teor menor que 39 ppm, não se verificou redução nos valores de nitrogênio após o tratamento no RH. No grupo de corridas com teor de nitrogênio acima de 39 ppm, evidenciou-se uma redução média de 17% do teor de nitrogênio. Além disso, o teor médio final de nitrogênio em ambos os grupos ficaram com diferença de apenas 2 ppm, evidenciando que o desgaseificador a vácuo RH foi eficiente na redução de nitrogênio para teores acima de 39 ppm.

Surface and underground mining operations require equipment with high power output ratings. Haul trucks, loaders, dozers, and other equipment need increasing horse-power to meet production demands. To get more horsepower out of the engines driving the equipment, most manufacturers use turbocharging. Detroit Diesel puts the number at about 90% turbocharged, while Caterpillar estimates 75% to 80% of all its equipment is turbocharged. Turbocharging increases the power output and overall engine efficiency. But it presents some maintenance and operational problems that were not factors when only naturally aspirated engines (nonturbocharged) dominated the scene. A turbocharger is an exhaust-driven air compressor. Using the waste energy in the engine exhaust, a turbine wheel is driven. This wheel is connected by a common shaft to a compressor wheel. The shaft is supported by two plain bearings, or bushings. As the turbine wheel is rotated, the compressor wheel continually compresses the intake air to the cylinders. Compressing the intake air means that more air can be put into the cylinder to burn more fuel. The more fuel the engine can completely burn or combust, the more horsepower the engine can produce. Even though the turbocharger is a relatively simple device, it is a sensitive engine component. It requires special consideration at engine start-up and shutdown. Being freewheeling and exhaust driven, turbochargers can experience temperatures of 540°C 1000°F) and rotational speeds of more than 100,000 rpm. Due to those temperatures and speeds, lubrication is critical to the operation and life of a turbocharger. The turbo is located high on the engine, with the oil supply running through an external line from the sump. The recommended practice is to start the engine and allow it to idle for a few minutes before any revving or loading. This allows the oil to reach the turbo and properly lubricate the bearings before high rotational speeds are seen. Turbo oil supply lines can be as long as 1.5 m (5 ft). Depending on ambient temperatures and oil viscosity, it can take as long as 30 seconds for oil to reach the spinning turbo. However, as little as five seconds without oil can damage the turbo's bearings, reducing its life and overall efficiency. Lubrication problems seen at shut-down can also significantly affect turbo life and efficiency. Manufacturers recommend an idling period of five to seven minutes before engine shutdown. This allows the turbo to slow down and cool off somewhat to help prevent oil coking and bearing damage. When the engine stops, so does the oil supply. There is very little oil left on the bearing surfaces and in the turbo oil supply passages. The immediate heat transfer from the turbine wheel to shaft, bearings, and turbo body literally cooks what is left. This high heat without oil flow can cause bearing deformation by actually melting some of the bearing material. The rapid oil oxidation and coking will restrict oil passages, damage bearings and shaft. Besides heat soaking, there is another problem. If the turbo is spinning at high speeds when the engine is shutdown, the turbo must spin-down to a stop without oil flow. With the large size of turbos used on mining equipment, this spindown time without oil can be for as long as 10 to 20 seconds. Fortunately, lack of lubrication at start-up and shutdown and the subsequent bearing damage can be prevented by oil injection devices. These devices hold a reservoir of engine oil. The oil is injected to the turbocharger bearings immediately on start-up and for several minutes after shutdown. Oil injection devices are spring loaded, hydraulic accumulators. They are actuated at start-up by a solenoid wired to the starter motor. Engine oil pressure charges the accumulator during normal operation. Upon shut-down and loss of oil pressure, the device provides oil to the turbo for about two or three minutes. With an oil injection device, the engine can be started and immediately driven without fear of turbo damage. Also, an abrupt shutdown will not damage the turbocharger since the device will continue to lubricate for two or three minutes. A word of caution. Be sure the oil injection device provides positive oil displacement (pressurized oil flow). Do not use a gravity-flow device. Unless it is a true accumulator, the device could starve the turbo for oil on start-up, Ask for start-up and shut-down pressures and delivery times before considering installation. Keep the oil clean, and follow the manufacturer's recommended oil change intervals. These intervals are usually shorter than with naturally aspirated engines. Use oil with a CD rating designed for diesel applications. A multiviscosity oil is preferable. Use a synthetic engine oil, such as Mobil's Delvac 1, Gulf's Super Duty II, or Chevron's Sub-zero Fluid. Synthetics have much better flow properties at low temperatures. They also have greater oxidation stability (they can take the high heat of turbo-bearing lubrication. And they produce fewer deposits because they are more thermally stable. But synthetic oils do cost more - two or three times more. One additional point - maintain the air intake system. Since all mining is usually in a dusty environment, air filters should be changed regularly and intake systems should be checked for leaks. All intake air passes through the turbo. Any dirt or abrasives entering the turbo will damage the unit and shorten its life. While mining is a heavy duty business with severe operating conditions, you can get the life from your turbocharger that you expect by following a few simple steps: • equip the turbo with an oil-injection device to provide lubrication on start-up and shutdown; • change the oil and filters regularly; and • use the proper oil-synthetic, if possible.

The 24th annual survey of the peat industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 76 producers in 20 States reported commercial production of peat in 1957. In addition to the States that reported production in 1956, Colorado, Idaho, and Wisconsin produced peat in 1957 Forty-four producers reported humus production; 21, reed-sedge peat; and 22, moss peat production. This total exceeds the number of active plants but several producers recovered more than one type of peat. Fifty percent of the total production was reported as reed-sedge peat, 36 percent as humus, and 14 percent as moss peat. About one-sixth of the total production was raw peat, with no preparation other than being air-dried. The remainder consisted of processed peat prepared for use by cultivation, shredding, and/or kiln drying.

This report summarizes the work performed under USBM Contract No. H0155155, "Demonstrating the Noise Control of a Coal Preparation Plant." A Consolidation Coal Company coal preparation plant (the Georgetown Plant) was selected for demonstration of various noise control techniques and materials in a commercially operating plant. At the start of the project, the 1650 tons per hour (tph) plant was surveyed to document the existing sound levels and worker noise exposures. On the basis of the survey, individual noise sources were characterized and assigned priorities for treatment. Four categories of noise control treatments were installed in this plant: ? Resilient impact pads ? Curtains ? Chute liners ? Resilient screen decks. Currently (1977) available resilient impact pads and curtains were found to be suit-able for general use in coal preparation plants; in the Georgetown Plant, they provided significant noise reduction [6 to 10 dB(A)]. The overall performance of the chute liners which also provided useful noise reduction, was strongly dependent on the specific installation. Although the resilient screen decks have the potential for 7 to 9 dB(A) of coal/screen impact noise reduction, blinding and delamination (in composite decks) en-countered at the Georgetown Plant represented major design problems for these products. This program achieved noise reductions of up to 10 dB in various areas of the Georgetown Plant (within the restrictions imposed by the plant's operation) resulting in significant reduction in worker noise exposures.

An overall summary and the individual reports of eight workshops to determine research and development needs in western mining ore presented. Problem areas are identified, and recommendations regarding priorities, funding sources, and prime movers are made. The objective of this contract was to identify research and development needs for advancing mining technology as well as health and safety measures for western U.S. Surface and underground mining. This was accomplished by convening a series of workshops where problems could be thrashed out by producers of trona, uranium, open pit copper, underground salt (from the Midwest and New York), underground metal and nonmetal, etc. In addition to problems, future priorities, funding, and the desicion as to who should be the prime mover on R & D were discussed.

INTRODUCTION The principal means for transporting men, supplies, and mined material in an underground or surface mine are rail systems, conveyor belt systems, or a combination of the two. Typically, large underground mines use rail haulage from the mining sections to the hoist, with conveyor belts being used within the sections. Small mines use conveyor belts in the mains and sub- mains as well as in the panels. The size and layout of surface mines also contribute to variations in the way these haulage systems are applied. The following sections address the typical problems confronting mining engineers in designing these haul- age systems. For rail, these include rail selection and turnout design, locomotive tractive-effort calculation, and motor sizing. Belt haulage calculations include belt width and speed specifications, tension and take- up requirements, idler spacings, and motor sizing. TRACK LAYOUTS Introduction The adequacy of mine track layouts is dependent upon such factors as rail weight (Table l), suitable ties, a well-drained roadbed, and properly designed curves, grades, and track alignment. As long as the installation conforms to the manufacturer's recommendations, good service can be expected from the rail system. Typically, mining-engineering calculations for rack layouts have dealt almost exclusively with the design of turnouts. As such, the following section provides the necessary information for computing the theoretically correct dimensions of turnouts. Turnout Design Fig. 1 shows a typical turnout with an identification of the component parts. Fig. 2 identifies the variables that are used to determine the turnout dimensions. The Bureau of Mines has developed rock noise source location techniques that may be used to obtain precise and practical source locations from micro-seismic field data. These techniques enable one to monitor all or any part of a rock structure and map progressive stress buildup or rock movement. Thus, the microseismic method of determining instability in rock structures is becoming an invaluable engineering tool for the mining or civil engineer engaged in rock excavation and construction.
