Many factors influence the results of hydraulic fracturing to stimulate well productivity. Most of these factors have been studied and their effects discussed in the literature. However, the movement of sand through the crack during fracturing has received little consideration. Exactly where the sand goes in the fracture, how it gets there, and how this might influence results have not been studied, judging from published reports. To get an answer to some of these questions we have studied sand movement through a simulated crack segment in the laboratory. Although the work is preliminary, we have answered some questions about sand movement in a semiquantitative sense. We are reporting our results at this time in the hope of stimulating interest and further study in this important aspect of fracturing. LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of equipment used in this study. A segment of a vertical crack 0.25-in. wide was formed between two Plexiglas plates, and movement of sand in fluid through the crack was observed under various conditions. Sand and fluid were injected into the crack at constant rates. The top and bottom of the crack were closed so that the fluid flowed horizontally. Because of gravity most of the sand settled to the bottom before moving very far through the crack. If the fluid velocity exceeded a certain critical value, then all the sand injected was washed on through the crack even though it had settled to the bottom. When the fluid velocity was less than this value when sand injection was started, most of the sand which settled in the crack remained in place until enough of the area open to fluid flow was blocked by the settled sand to increase the fluid velocity to the critical value.. At this point all injected sand moved on through the crack even though it settled to the lower portion of the moving fluid section. All sand previously settled remained in place. When fluid velocity was increased at this paint by increasing fluid injection rate (without also increasing sand injection rate), some of the previously settled sand was washed out until enough area was open to flow that the velocity dropped to the critical value. Conversely, when the fluid velocity was decreased by decreasing the fluid injection rate (without changing the rate of sand injection), additional sand would settle until the critical velocity was again attained. In short, the critical velocity is an equilibrium value which the system will automatically seek, if possible. The equilibrium (or critical) velocity was measured under several conditions. The results of these measurements are shown in Pig. 2 where the equilibrium velocity is shown as a function of the amount of sand injected per minute. The points falling in the shaded band shown in Fig. 2 were obtained with water. The higher viscosities were obtained by adding CMC (carboxymethylcellu-lose). Data indicate that the equilibrium velocity is not very sensitive to sand size or transport fluid viscosity, or to sand injection rate (except at very low rates). Points connected by the solid CUrve in Fig. 2 were obtained with water and 20- to 40-mesh steel shot. The equilibrium velocity is apparently fairly sensitive to difference in density between particle and fluid. Only one run was made with a gelled fluid and that was gelled water at zero sand injection rate as shown in Fig. 2. "Three models to predict the effect of bubble size (Db) on metallurgical response were tested in a pilot-scale flotation column at Teck Highland Valley Copper mine. The column was fed with slurry collected from the Cu/Mo separation circuit. The first model was the one developed by Gorain et al. (1997), which assumes that the collection zone rate constant (kc) is inversely proportional to Db. The second model was the one proposed by Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010), which considers kc as an inverse square function of Db. The third model was the one developed by Yoon and Luttrell (1989) which provides expressions to describe the efficiency of particle collection (E) based on first principles. The results showed a significant bias between experimental and predicted data using the model of Gorain et al. (1997), possibly reflecting the model’s inability to explain the impact of bubble size, bubble rise velocity and flow regime on E. The model of Hernandez-Aguilar et al. (2010) well described the experimental evidence. The model of Yoon and Luttrell gave accurate and unbiased predictions. However, Yoon and Luttrell’s approach calls for a criterion to determine whether the flow regime is potential or intermediate, a subject that requires more fundamental research.INTRODUCTIONParticle collection, i.e., bubble-particle collision followed by attachment, is the basis of flotation. In a quiescent environment (such as the one observed in a column, or away from the impeller in a mechanical cell), a collision event can take place as long as the “degree of turbulence” caused by the rising bubble does not prevent particle and bubble to flow in close proximity. Upon collision, the particle slides on the bubble surface for a period of time. If the particle is hydrophobic, attachment occurs when the “sliding time” is longer than the “induction time”, which is the time required to thin and rupture the intervening liquid (usually water) film forming a three-phase contact angle. While the induction time is largely influenced by the degree of hydrophobicity of the particle, the degree of turbulence is governed by the bubble size. Generally, direct control of bubble size is not exercised by most mineral processing practitioners, in spite of its obvious importance. Studies to model the effect of bubble size on particle collection using fundamental approaches have been conducted (e.g., Anfruns and Kitchener, 1977; Webber and Paddock, 1983; Yoon and Luttrell, 1989; Dai et al., 1999). However, these models have been validated under highly idealized laboratory conditions (micro-scale experiments using single minerals and uni-sized bubbles), far from resembling those existing in practical industrial applications. Fundamental studies to interpret the effect of bubble size on particle collection in industrial environments are largely absent in the literature. Partly because of this lack of practical knowledge, many mineral processing practitioners perceive laboratory “bubble size” studies to be valuable academic exercises, but not something that can be directly applied to daily production issues."

A complete chemical analysis of the waste showed that it contains 15.64% P2O5; X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that it is composed mainly of francolite, calcite, pyrite, quartz and dolomite. The phosphate values were recovered and the settling rate of the wastes enhanced by the use of hydrocyclone and flocculation techniques. The hydrocyclone produced an underflow enriched in phosphate and an overflow enriched in clays. The former represented 39.8% by weight of the phosphatic clay waste and assayed 26% P2O5 at a recovery of 66.36%. The results of flocculation of the phosphatic clay waste showed that both the degree and rate of settling were increased and that the process water could be recycled. The settling rate was 37 times greater when anionic polyacrylamide A130 was used

A moderately scaled apparatus was developed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the fire resistance characteristics of mine conveyor belts and similar type materials. The design of the apparatus was based upon data obtained in full-scale fire tests and features a radiant panel to preheat the belt and a methane-oxygen ribbon burner to ignite the sample under ventilating condi¬tions in a rectangular duct. The test method overcomes the limitations of existing laboratory-scale methods and provides a measure of both ignitability and flammability in quantitative terms. Flame propagation depended upon such variables as air velocity, ignitor heat flux, and belt width and height in the test chamber. Data are presented for nine belt materials and fire resistance ratings are proposed in terms of the flame spread rate, heat release rate, and the critical ignitor heat flux. The ratings discriminate between the fire hazard posed by different fire-resistant belts and tend to be in reasonable agreement with those obtained in full-scale fire tests.

The deep level gold mining environment is characterized by high stresses that give rise to intense mining induced fracturing of the rock mass surrounding the stopes. In a geologically disturbed region where the intensity of mining induced stress fracturing is high, the degree of faulting and/or the frequency of other geological features such as joints may pose serious strata control problems. Unfavourable intersection of these discontinuities namely, faults, joints and mining induced stress fractures tend to divide the immediate hangingwall into unstable keyblocks which, if not supported, may result in extensive falls of ground. Effective support strategies therefore demand detailed investigation of the predominant inclinations and orientations of these discontinuities. The orientations and inclinations of these discontinuities surrounding a deep level stope have been measured. The results are projected onto the lower hemisphere of a stereographic net to determine the factors that contribute to the falls of ground in the stope. The analyses reveal that unfavourable intersection of these discontinuities divides the immediate hangingwall into unstable wedges that may become dislodged between support units.

The aim of the present study is to determine on a gram per gram basis the toxic products of the thermal oxidative degradations of selected compositions. Four families of materials were investigated under the subject contract namely polyvinyl chloride and neoprene compositions, rigid urethane foams I and woods. Three methods were employed to conduct the thermal oxidative degradations: a sealed system (quiescent environment) I a stagnation burner arrangement (dynamic environment) I and a flow-through apparatus (dynamic I but less severe than stagnation burner conditions). The majority of tests were conducted using the first two systems; only limited experiments were carried out employing the third decomposition procedure. All decomposition was done at temperatures of 370 -4000C I the higher temperature being used in the stagnation burner. It has to be stressed that the nature of the products and the relative product concentration are temperature dependent. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses were performed to supplement and extend the above delineated studies and to explore the feasibility of using these analyses as a method for material differentiation.

The Michigan Dept. of State Highways makes extensive use of geophysics for subsurface surveying which would be applicable for uses in other fields. Examples of resistivity surveys are given which include a proposed large-volume excavation with suggestions for land use after excavation, subsurface evaluation for engineering design, and a subsurface survey for land appraisal. An example of a combined refraction seismic and resistivity survey is shown where the resistivity is used for outlining the unconsolidated soils, while the seismic method is used to outline bedrock and to evaluate it for rippability. A refraction seismic survey at the bottom of bridge caissons for evaluation of bedrock uniformity and a rehtive aid in assessing rock strength is reported. These past several years have been a period of unprecendented construction and commercial expansion. Vast private manufacturing complexes and government road, power, and office projects are being built or are in planning stages. Nearly everywhere, municipalities are expanding outward and upward. Many towns are developing into cities and many cities are displaying new skylines, and the building boom shows little sign of slowing down.

The Bureau of Mines developed and evaluated a detecting and sorting device to separate the copper-bearing portion from the barren portion of Michigan native copper ore in the minus 4- plus 1-inch size range. Small-scale sorting tests were also conducted on minus 1- plus 1/2-inch material from the Centennial No. 6 mine, using a previously developed system that was modified to increase sensitivity. Results showed that, with the added sensitivity, 85 to 90 pct of the copper in the minus 1- plus 1/2-inch material could be recovered in about 50 to 60 pct of the fraction. Sorting tests on minus 4- plus 2-inch and minus 2- plus 1-inch fractions from the Centennial mine were conducted with the large sorting system. Results showed that 86 to 93 pct of the copper was recovered in 43 to 64 wt-pct of the sorted fractions. Combining of concentrates from the two fractions resulted in a recovery of 90 pct of the Popper in 55 pct of the weight. The composite concentrate contained 2.40 pct copper, and the tailing analyzed 0.33 pct Cu; the head sample assayed 1.46 pct Cu.

This report describes a research and development program sponsored by the United State s Bureau of Mines. The purpose of the program was to develop reusable explosion-proof bulkheads for a cross-cut emergency shelter, and to study the implementation of such bulk-heads, and the resulting shelters, as part of an emergency escape plan in a normal coal mining environment. The first part of this report reveals a number of significant conclusions regarding the application of emergency shelters. A study of the cause s of, and the conditions prevailing during a mine emergency indicate s that ideal placement of the shelter s would be midway along developing entries, and at the inter section of butt and main entries. The proper spacing of shelters is based on the travel capability of trapped miners, which is in turn dependent on the height of coal. The life of a given emergency shelter, based on an analysis of the above information, will be anywhere from 6 months to 10 years. Consequently, some shelters are regarded as "temporary?, while others "permanent?.

To help maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines developed a mathematical model that describes acidic ferric sulfate leaching of copper from sulfide ores. The leaching model can aid in maximizing minerals and metals recovery from primary sources by giving operators and management a better understanding of the copper leaching process. This will aid in improving dump leaching operations. The model is based on a steady-state approximation of the continuity equation for diffusion of ferric ions in the rock pores and the intrinsic leaching kinetics of the various sulfide mineral particles. Ore characteristics included in the model were ore particle-size distribution, particle shape, grade, mineral content, mineral particle size, porosity, and tortuosity. The continuity equation was used with ferric ion concentration gradients and a fixed value for the diffusion coefficient. Except for effective diffusivity, each of these factors was either measured experimentally or estimated from theoretical considerations. The effective diffusivities were determined by fitting calculated leaching curves with experimental leaching data. Vertical variations in leach solution composition and temperature within a dump are not considered in this model. The model accurately predicted copper extractions for several large-scale tests during nearly 500 days of leaching.

When the United States entered the World War governmental agencies found little definite knowledge available as to the exact capacity of each sulphuric acid plant in the United States to manufacture acid under the stress of a great emergency. It is true that on account of the demand for acid for the manufacture of munitions for the Allies, prior to the entrance of this country into the war, most of the acid plants near industrial centers in the Eastern and Northern States were running at or nearly their maximum capacity, but, . for various reasons, many plants in these States and plants in other districts were not. For a number of years statistics as to the production of acid by the plants of the country were compiled by the United States Geological Survey, but obviously such figures did not give information as to the maximum capacities that might be available for meeting the he.a vy war ·requirements, or as to the steps that would have to be taken to bt-ing these capacities into use. During the summer and early fall of 1917 various attempts were made to obtain the desired information, but no satisfactory or complete data were obtained. Late in 1917, under the authority granted to the Bureau of Mines by the explosives act, the Director of the Bureau of Mines directed A. E. Wells, metallurgist of the bureau, to uiake a complete survey of the situation. Mr. Wells personally conferred with officials of the acid companies and visited most of the acid plants in the North that are east of the Mississippi River. The information obtained through this personal survey, together with that obtained through the ready cooperation of the subcommittee on ncids, and the subcommittee on fertilizers of the Committee on Chemicals of the Council of National Defense, enabled the preparation of a report containing the desired data concerning the sulphuric acid industry. This report was made immediately available to the War Industries Board and to those offices in the War and Navy Depart- ments that were most directly concerned in planning the explosives program and in obtaining the necessary supplies to produce the explosives. Beginning with this survey and report, the sulphuric acid section of the war minerals investigations of the Bureau of Mines took an active part in all matters pertaining to the sulphuric acid industry during the remainder of the war. Mr. Wells, the chief of the section, was appointed an associate chief of the sulphur, pyrite, and sulphuric acid sections of the War Industries Board. .Also, by this direct contact with the War Industries Board, the data obtained by Messrs. R. R. Hornor, H. A. Buehler, a.nd 0. Lindstrom, who were in charge, for the bureau, of the investigations concerning the supplies of pyrite and sulphur, were constantly made available to all interested Government agencies. D. E. Fogg, of New York City, was appointed chemical engineer to the sulphuric acid section to make special investigations relating to the acid industry, especially the possible utilization, in an emergency, of those sources of raw material.not then being used. Mr. E. E. Corbett, of Brooklyn, N. Y., was appointed chemical engineer to make investigations concerned primarily ,vith the conservation of acid. Direct and intimate contact with the industry was had through the close cooperation with the committee on acids of the Chemical Alliance, this committee during the greater part of 1918 occupying rooms with the acid section of the bureau. With the ending of the war and the close o:f the active work of the acid section of the bureau, the suggestion was made by many interested parties that a bulletin be prepared giving some qf the fun. damental and most important facts regarding the sulphuric acid industry, including a discussion of the technical :features of the manufacture of acid. During the war the bureau received -a vast number of inquiries in regard to various phases of the industry, a.nd this fact also made such a bulletin seem desirable. Therefore, the present bulletin was prepared to cover the main facts in regard to the industry in this country, including a discussion of the supplies of sulphur-bearing raw materials, the situation of the acid plants, the principal points in regard to manufacturing processes, and the uses of the acid. No attempt has been ma.de to discuss at length the manufacturing processes, as details differ more or less at the different plants and in general are carefully guarded by the acid ·companies. A great deal of the data given in this bulletin may be found in various pub]ications, but this is the first publication in which such data have been assembled and made readily available. Most of the data were obtained directly from observation and from cooperating acid companies or from individuals who had been or are now engaged in acid manufacturing and were liberal and generous in making their information available for publication. Care has been exercised to publish no data that were obtained as confidential by the bureau's representatives. The average acid manufacturer may be already more or less acquainted with most of the information presented in this bulletin, yet it is believed that the bulletin will be of value to those who wish to obtain a. general review of the present condition, both the economic and technical, of the sulphuric acid industry in the United States.

"The South Bay Division of Selco Mining is located fifty-four miles northeast of Ear Falls Ontario on Confederation Lake. The concentrator operates five days a week and processes six hundred tons per day of copper zinc silver sulphide ore. The concentrator is comprised of crushing, grinding, differential flotation, thickening and drying circuits. The major constituents of the concentrator feed are: chalcopyrite 7%, sphalerite 20%, pyrrhotite 3%, pyrite 25 - 30% and felsitic volcanics 40 - 50%. The mine went into production in March 1971 with an anticipated three year life and is now scheduled for closure in the summer of 1981. Recent mine production has been limited to three cut and fill stopes which have widely varying ore grades, therefore mill feeds vary from 0.25 to 4% copper, 3.5 to 27% zinc, 0 to 0.4% lead and 15 to 30% iron.In mid 1977 Selco negotiated a six month rental purchase agreement with Outokumpu Instruments Canada Limited for a five stream analyser system. The Minexan 202 probes were the first Outokumpu probe type analysers installed in Canada although Outokumpus' Courier systems are well known. Installation of the system took place in April 1978 and after numerous hardware faults the six month evaluation began in August. By December it was obvious that the Minexan 202 probes with proportional detectors did not have adequate resolution to determine low copper values in either of the tailings streams. Outokumpu offered to replace the tailings analysers with a new prototype solid state detector probe the following summer. The evaluation on the five Minexan 202 probes continued until August 1979 when the new solid probe was installed. The Minexan S (solid state) probe was evaluated with the three remaining Minexan 202 probes until December 1979 when Selco elected to purchase the system."

The vertical travel lead, referred to as "VTL" system, was first developed and patented by C.W. Bermingham in the 1970's. This lead system was developed in response to the fundamental limitations of either a fixed lead or hanging lead system. The fixed lead system is well suited to level job sites with few obstructions and has the advantage of faster positioning of the lead, the hanging lead is very adaptable to different elevations and batter piles but takes much longer to position. Therefore the Vertical Travel Lead was developed to combine the advantages of fixed leads, fast and accurate positioning, with the ability to adjust the height of the lead base up or down. The VTL lead is connected to the boom by a sliding connection which allows the lead to be elevated or lowered below grade. The advantages of the VTL system were recognized by many foundation specialists and they have become the Industry standard in Canada , US Railway Construction , and many parts of the USA.

Optimum conditions are given for chloridizing pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, stibnite, and covellite with chlorine gas. The formation of metal chlorides is affected by the time and temperature of chloridizing, and by particle size of the sample. Chloridizing data also are given for chemically precipitated antimony (III) sulfide and copper (II) sulfide.

I.H. 635 (LBJ Freeway) was constructed as a loop freeway around the city of Dallas in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a design capacity of 160,000 vehicles per day (vpd). Today’s facility is carrying over 270,000 vpd. To help mitigate community concerns with regard to right-of-way issues, noise, safety, and traffic disruption, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning a number of significant improvements. The West Section improvements include the construction of managed HOV/Toll lanes. Within this 8-mile section, TxDOT is planning two mined tunnels(1.5 and 1.9 miles long) beneath the LBJ Freeway. The mined tunnels will connect to cut-and-cover box sections in both the east and west directions. This paper presents an overview of the project development from the design schematic, through the geotechnical investigations, into the current design stage. The project is being planned for implementation by use of a Comprehensive Development Agreement.

A research programme has been undertaken to evaluate and predict the effect of total extraction of coal by underground methods on the superimposed strata, aquifer systems and ground surface in the Collie Basin. Western Australia. The research work has integrated comprehensive field monitoring of surface and subsurface subsidence with empirical, analytical and physical modelling in an effort to develop an effective predictive tool which can be used in all mining scenarios. Early results indicate that although each method has certain limitations, this approach has enabled the researchers to develop a very good understanding of the subsidence mechanisms from the mine panel through to the surface in the weak, water saturated sediments in the Collie Basin. Given that both subsurface and surface subsidence characteristics have tied in well, greater confidence can be held for predictions made by representative models.

This report describes the tunneling at the Leadville drainage tunnel, which was resumed in September 1950 with funds made available in the 1950 appropriation of the Department of the Interior. It brings up to date the account of the first project, carried on from December 1943 to August 1945, published by the Bureau of Mines which supervised both the first and second projects. In this report Leadville mining history, particularly related to drainage efforts, and the possibilities for future mine drainage are discussed briefly. An account of the second project, including a description of the operating cycle, exploratory drilling done as a safety measure, surveying procedures, geology, cost data, and other pertinent information, completes the report.
