(New York Meeting, February, 1912.) By the old method of determining platinum in ores and bullion, the silver-alloy first obtained in the regular course of assay is parted in strong sulphuric acid and the residual metal weighed. This is re-alloyed with silver by a second cupellation and parted in nitric acid, the residual metal being again weighed. Any difference shown between the two weighings is assumed to be, and is called; platinum. Sometimes it is so, and if any considerable amount of platinum be present, there will be a decided difference between the two weighings; but a slight difference is no real evidence whatever of the presence of platinum. On the other hand, the second weight may equal or possibly exceed the first, even when traces of platinum are present. Again, other members of the platinum group may go into solution in nitric acid more or less. If present, these would be called platinum and escape detection. The method does not provide any direct tests whatever as to the presence or absence of platinum. It is often indecisive, and sometimes jives erroneous results. It is, therefore, quite unsatisfactory. Being called upon many times to determine platinum in a wide variety of materials, particularly when present in very small amounts, I have realized the disadvantages and defects of this old method. [The formation of gas hydrates in natural-gas pipe lines depends on temperature and pressure conditions in the lines as well as on the presence of condensed water. The operating pressure in a pipe line may be determined easily and usually is available from the records of operation, but the temperature seldom is known. In cooperation with the American Gas Association, the Bureau of Mines, in its investigation of gas hydrates, conducted a pipe-line-temperature survey and studied underground temperatures at depths at which pipe lines ordinarily are buried and the relationship of these temperatures to prevailing atmospheric conditions. A similar but more limited study of this type was, conducted by engineers of the Bureau of Mines a number of years ago.4/A summary of the earlier findings was included in a general report by the Bureau on the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines.5/ In the present study, data on temperature variations were obtained at several places widely separated geographically. This information should assist pipe-line engineers in designing and operating natural-gas pipe lines. In the pipe-line-temperature survey here resorted, a study was made along a 22-inch natural-gas pipe line: originating near Amarillo, Tex., and extending northwestward through New Mexico into Colorado (fig. 1). A dynamic testing program was performed to evaluate installation procedures, assess capacity of 610-mm (24-inch) diameter open ended steel pipe to evaluate set-up and provide minimum pile tip elevation based on the dynamic testing results. The program was performed for a marine terminal project consisting of a 570-meter (1900-foot) long, overwater railroad trestle. The project location is Santa Marta, Colombia, South America. The subsurface profile generally consisted of 4m (12 ft.) of water and soft to hard silty clays. The piles were installed to an approximate tip elevation of -22 meters (MSL). Three piles were initially dynamically monitored during installation and then later monitored during restrike driving to evaluate pile drivability and bearing capacity including time related capacity increases due to soil "set-up". Knowledge of change in pile capacity with time after end of initial driving is important for design of pile foundations.

Longwall shearers usually suffer from excessive pick and pickholder consumptions and severe wear of the back plate of the clearance ring section of shearer drums. In practice, most of the drums were seen to be withdrawn from the face due to the abovementioned problems, while vane picks and their holders were intact due to the improper lacing design of the clearance ring picks. However, few underground investigations and their results on the effect of lacing arrangement of clearance picks on the service life of shearer drums have been published. Nevertheless, the pick consumption characteristics of shearer drums were not investigated in detail, since these are fewer pick consumptions with shearers when compared to roadheaders. This paper is concerned with the comprehensive in situ trials on the effect of lacing of clearance ring picks on the lifespan of shearer drums, and the pick consumption characteristics of longwall shearers at Cayirhan Coal Mine in Turkey. The lifespan of shearer drums employed with shearers in this mine increased 70 per cent, while the consumption rate of clearance ring picks decreased threefold through using an alternative lacing for clearance picks, indicating the significance of utilizing proper design techniques for clearance ring picks for the service life of shearer drums. Statistical analyses carried out, using the raw pick consumption data, implied that the clearance ring picks experienced much higher loads than vane picks, revealing that special attention must be paid to designing clearance ring picks. An average maximum consumption value of 41 was determined for clearance ring picks, with corner-cutting picks having the most replacements, while it was 35 for vane picks, on three-day based pick replacements.

A large scale blast damage project was carried out over the past two years at INCO Ltd Manitoba Division co-funded by the Canada/Manitoba Mineral Development Agreement. The experiment was conducted at the T-3 Mine in two mining stopes with an experimental drift developed in the hanging-wall for the installation of monitoring instrumentation. The objective was to observe and subsequently to reduce ore dilution by monitoring the performance of blasts, the hanging wall movement, as well as the cavity of the open stopes.

Alluvial gold grades are typically highly erratic. It is very often difficult to establish with confidence the in situ grades of reserve blocks due to the small number of pit or drill hole samples available, and their erratic values. Trends in grade are often obscure. Geostatical methods are inappropriate due to the extreme nugget effect found in alluvial gold field data. Classical statistics appear more suited to such data but require assumptions to be made regarding the nature of the population sampled. Recent developments in computer intensive non-parametric statistical methods provide a new approach to dealing with some of the above problems. These methods avoid making assumptions about the type of population distribution, usually through some kind of re-sampling scheme. The bootstrap procedure involves taking the estimate of interest and synthesising its population of by re-sampling the original data a large number of times (1000+), at random and with replacement. The synthetic population is then used to draw conclusions about the likely behaviour of the true population.

[This Bureau of Mines report presents results of a survey of underground mining equipment and of two demonstration programs showing the feasibility If quieting; a load-haul-dump (LHD) machine and a personnel vehicle. Typical noise levels are presented for the major machine types used in underground mines, along with estimates of the noise overexposure of miners who operate or work near these machines. General principles of noise control are explained, and the application of these principles is illustrated in the description of modifications made to the LHD machine and the personnel vehicle. The noise control package installed On the persona of vehicle lowered its noise level by 14 dBA after 4 months of operation, and inspection of the LHD machine after 2 1/2 years of operation with the modifications showed its noise level 7 dBA lower than that of the unmodified machine. Noise dosimeter measurements indicated that both machines were in compliance with Federal noise regulations for a typical shift.]

This report summarizes all work performed under U.S. Bureau of Mines Contract No. J0395028, "Noise Control of Rubber-Tired Front-End Loaders Used in Surface Mining. " Two loaders, a Caterpillar 988 and an International H-400B, were chosen for this program, and the noise sources and acoustic paths that contribute to the operator's noise exposure were identified. Retrofit noise control treatments were designed and installed on these loaders, and noise reductions of more than 10 dBA at the operator position were achieved on both machines. The retrofit packages are low cost and have been field tested in two mines for more than two years. The results of the program were communicated to the mining industry through a series of noise control workshops and a field manual. The workshops were given in nine states across the U.S. and more than 440 manuals were distributed An audio/visual slide presentation was also developed which the program.

The importance of "good voltage," especially for direct-current systems in coal mines, is not always fully appreciated. From the practical aspect there are three viewpoints from which low voltage may be considered, namely: (a) its effect upon operation of electrical equipment, (b) its effect upon cost of maintenance and power, and (c) its effect upon safety in the mine. The design of electrical motor-driven equipment usually is based upon a given or assumed constant value for the voltage of the system; consequently, when there is an appreciable drop below this value, unsatisfactory operation is likely to follow. In the case of shaker conveyors, for example, one manufacturer has pointed out that these conveyors must be operated at a certain definite speed if maximum output is to be secured. As shunt motors are used in the conveyor drives, either a rise or fall in voltage will produce corresponding changes in speed and thus seriously affect the efficiency of the conveyor. The introduction of automatic control for mine equipment has been greatly retarded because the relays, contactors, and other special devices required have failed to function properly when attempt was made to operate them on systems subject to variable and low-voltage conditions.

Synthesis report on a project carried out under the EC-funded BRITE-EURAM programme. A prototype high-resolution electromagnetic system, based on the theory of controlled-source magnetotellurics, was developed. The electrical source field is fed into the earth by dipoles at preselected frequencies and a multi-channel receiver measures five electric and three orthogonal magnetic fields. Suitable mapping algorithms and spatial filters are applied to the data and a new technique permits calibration during measurement. The system was field tested over a blind orebody, at 250-550 m depth, in the Aguas Tenidas area of the Iberian Pyrite Belt. Ten lines totalling 12 000 m of profile length were completed in seven days and the orebody was identified. Copper-Nickel ores in northeastern Minnesota could establish a new industry in a region where underground mining has not been active. This study reviews geotechnical data relevant to the selection and design of underground mines in this region and by numerical structural analysis evaluates the importance of some geotechnical parameters to mine method selection. Because of the rapid development of computer modeling many new techniques have become available for modeling rock mass behavior in recent years. An overview of these methods is presented and their applicability to mine design reviewed. Methods included in this summary were the differential continuum models, such as finite Pint and finite difference, integral continuum models, such as boundary element, displacement discontinuity and boundary integral equation methods, and discontinuum methods such as the distinct block model. The displacement discontinuity method was used to evaluate the influence of geotechnical parameters on some aspects of mine design. Three problems; room stability, pillar stability on a weak inclined contact and sill pillar thickness influence on sill pillar stability, were analyzed to evaluate the relative importance of insitu stress field and joint properties on design. It was concluded that for stability analysis the initial horizontal stress is of most importance in all aspects of design. The position, orientation, persistence and strength of joints is also of primary concern. In a more general sense, however, it was concluded that detailed geotechnical parameters have much less influence on mine method selection than more general factors such as rock quality, initial stress state, orebody shape and economics.

The Mildred Lake Settling Basin (MLSB) is the largest disposal site for mature fine tailings (MFT) at the Syncrude Canada Ltd oil sands plant. Over the past years (since 1997), there has been a marked change in the consolidation behaviour of MFT in the MLSB, which is attributed to microbial activity. Methane-producing microorganisms, known as methanogens, have become very active, and large amounts of biogas (mainly methane) have been produced. In certain regions within the MLSB, gas bubbles are released to the water surface of the tailings pond. Continued field monitoring of the MLSB has provided convincing evidence of the rapid densification process (rapid water drainage from the tailings). This phenomenon contradicts the consolidation models for MFT developed over the past 20 years. The above phenomenon has also been reported at the oil sands tailings ponds operated by Suncor Energy Ltd. in Fort McMurray. This rapid densification has caused pumping challenges in the transfer of fine tailings from the Mildred Lake Settling Basin for the creation of composite tailings. The rapid densification of the MFT may also have potential positive effects in accelerating the reclamation of the oil sands fine tailings. A field and laboratory research program is underway to study the mechanism leading to the rapid densification phenomenon. Systematic field investigations were performed to determine the distribution and characteristics of the rapidly densified MFT. Gas bubble distribution on the water surface was mapped to determine the zones of different biological activities in the pond. These field investigations provided solid ground for further experimental and theoretical research. A number of small-scale column tests were carried out to observe the gas evolution and to measure the changes of some geotechnical parameters under different microbial activity. Also, a series of gassy MFT densification tests are being conducted to study the mechanism of the rapid densification of the MFT under microbiological activity. A review and discussion of the research program is given and some preliminary research results are presented in the paper.

The mesothermal quartz-scheelite lodes of the Wakamarina valley are one of twelve known mined or prospected gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Recorded production was 556 kg gold, a little silver, and c. 390 t scheelite. 134 m of the 1800 m long Golden Bar reef are accessible in the No 2 level of the Golden Bar mine. The reef is a typical multi-banded mesothermal vein, mostly c. 1.75 m wide, enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. Scheelite is sparsely distributed, and is more common in small veinlets in the hanging wall schist. The country rocks are textural zone I-1m schists of prehnite-pumpellyite to pumpellyite-actinolite metamorphic facies. Their geochemistry suggests they are part of the Caples Terrane, and of calc-alkaline volcanogenic arc origin. The associated Wakamarina Quartzite is strongly recumbent folded, and of the same metamorphic grade, with abundant pumpellyite, stilpnomelane, and garnet, presumably spessartine. Although it has geochemical signatures of a deep sea sediment, it is depleted in Cr and Cu, and greatly enhanced in K and Ti, when compared with a standard chert. It also has trace element characteristics of a calc-alkaline arc-related sediment. However, associated greenschist has MORB-like incompatible element chemistry. The Golden Bar reef lies within a steeply dipping, normal to transtensional dip-slip fault adjacent to a shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone, which, at least on the footwall side, is 040 m wide. The shear foliation has been severely dragged down to nearly parallel the Golden Bar reef within 1 m of the quartz lode. Preliminary structural analysis suggests that the shear zone is extensional. X-ray diffraction analyses of the wall rocks show a progressive depletion of amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite towards the reef, and enhanced illite/muscovite and Kfeldspar adjacent to the lode, along with possible graphitic carbon within 10m. Two zones of intense quartz veining occur, one adjacent to the hanging wall for 12 m and one from 40 m outwards. Quartz vein systems in the country rock are complex and span from pre-schistosity to post-mylonite. They include multiple generations of quartz, actinolite, stilpnomelane, pumpellyite, albite, adularia, chlorites, illite/muscovite, calcite, and scheelite. Metal analyses across the Golden Bar reef showed gold values of 0.13.1 ppm, and low tungsten values, consistent with the observed sporadic scheelite occurrences. As and Sb are at background levels, but enhanced Cr (150 - 430 ppm) relative to the schists (30 - 41 ppm) suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic to ultramafic rocks.

Shales in the Appalachian Region of Kentucky and Tennessee were sampled and tested to determine their use as raw materials for the manufacture of lightweight aggregate by the rotary-kiln method. Nine samples were obtained from eastern Kentucky and 143 samples were obtained from eastern Tennessee. As a result of preliminary testing of these samples, two sources in eastern Kentucky and 11 sources in eastern Tennessee were resampled for rotary-kiln tests. The rotary-kiln tests showed the two sources in Kentucky and seven sources in Tennessee contained shale that would produce satisfactory aggregate. Lightweight aggregate processed from these nine sources was tested in concrete shapes and was found to be suitable for use in structural concrete.

Site being located in intertidal zone had its unique geological characteristics and own set of difficulties during construction.INTRODUCTIONThe Indian subcontinent offers diverse subsoil conditions. With current modern and future trend of long span bridges the substructure design often demands large size foundations. The foundation of theses bridges are usually deep and large in size. The execution of such foundations in maritime environments often involves important temporary works, in order to provide a safe workplace, comply with environmental requirements and achieve high quality standards.Often Pile foundations are preferred solution now a days, but due to various statutory and environmental regulations their construction poses a challenge. With better equipment and corresponding quality control, construction of large diameter pile foundation has emerged as a faster and reliable option.OVER VIEW OF THE PROJECTThe first two lane bridge on NH-8 (Vadodra – Mumbai) known as Sardar Bridge was constructed in 1977, subsequently an additional two lane bridge was constructed in 1999-2000, 29 m downstream of the first. In view of rising volume of traffic and as part of upgradation of NH8, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) proposed to construct 3rd new 4 Lane Bridge 100 m downstream of 2nd Narmada Bridge, based on Central Water and Power research Institute (CWPRS) study and recommendation.The general layout (fig. 1) of the 3rd Narmada bridge has 8 spans of 144 m and 2 spans of 96 m with total length of 1344 m, supported by132 nos. of 1.5 m diameter piles of about 50 m depth. The substructure has leaning “Y” shaped lower pylon of height 30 m together with cast in situ pier diaphragm. The piles are of M40 and superstructure & pylon of M50 grade of concrete."

Geologists in some underground gold mines collect grab samples from broken ore piles or trucks as a method of grade control. It is often known as muck sampling. Generally, the goal of grab sampling is to try and reconcile the mined grade at the ore source to the predicted grade and/or predict the mill feed grade. The mass of the sample collected is limited by health and safety issues, as well as by the capacity of the laboratory to process the samples within a given time frame. In general terms, grab sampling is known to be problematic because samplers tend to oversample the fines, and/or pick out high-grade fragments; surface sampling of piles does not test material within the pile; muck piles in development drives/faces are likely to be zoned due to the blasting sequence; high or low-grade material may preferentially segregate in the pile during mucking; the five per cent mass reject size of the material in muck piles is very large from underground blasting; some correlation usually exists whereby the larger fragments are enriched or depleted in the critical component of value; and the average error made in estimating the true stockpile grade is likely to be high. The method is prone to chronic fundamental sampling, grouping and segregation, delimitation, and extraction errors. Substantial warnings must be given about the use of grab sampling for grade control in gold mines. The method may appear to work sometimes, which can be attributed to a fine gold particle sizing and more disseminated distribution. As with all sampling methods, its appropriateness must be determined by ore characterization and heterogeneity testing to ensure the method suits the ore type.

Abstract - Quartz veins at the Mufferaw gold prospect and Komis gold deposit, northern Saskatchewan, are examples of oblique-extension veins that crystallized in shear and tensile fractures, which propagated and then opened oblique to their walls during a single continuous deformation event. The Mufferaw gold prospect consists of an interlinked mesh of conjugate shear fractures, tensile fractures, and veins. Oblique-extension veins crystallized in conjugate shear fractures, which opened during dilation of intersecting tensile fractures under the same far-field stress system. At the Komis gold mine, tensile and dextral shear fractures cut across granodiorite dikes. The tensile fractures formed perpendicular to the dike margins during stress transfer from the less-competent country rocks to the more-competent dikes. During extension of the dikes oblique to the bulk extension direction in the country rocks, the tensile fractures were reactivated as sinistral shear fractures. The reactivated tensile fractures and dextral shear fractures opened oblique to their walls, parallel to the bulk extension direction, and were sealed by the deposition of oblique-extension veins during the same deformation event.

"Increasing pressure are motivating the gold mining industry to develop a substitute to cyanide for leaching gold. This effort in mainly based on the high toxicity of cyanide and on the lack of efficiency of cyanide in the treatment of mildly refractory gold ores (sulfides and pre-robbing). Consequently, in only a few years, consortia have been created to elucidate and implement a new technology. The most promising lixiviant that has been selected to replace cyanide is thiosulfate. This paper will present a critical analysis on the latest developments in thiosulfate leaching and illustrate the potential and limitations of the technology with experimental data. Finally an assessment of the cost and performance of thiosulfate leaching relative cyanidation will be evaluated.INTRODUCTIONConcerns regarding the toxicity of cyanide and inability of cyanide solution to effectively leach some carbonaceous gold ore or mild refractory gold ores have made the gold mining industry evaluate alternative lixiviants to leach gold. This concern has been heightened recently by the cyanide spill at a mine in Romania, which devastated a 250-mile stretch of the Danube River and its tributaries, and the environmental damage at Ok Tedi mine in Papua New Guinea. Some countries and locations have prohibited the application of cyanidation to recover gold, such as, California and Colorado States, Japan and Turkey etc.There are several potential non-cyanide lixiviants (Sparrow and Woodcock, 1995) for gold extraction, such as thiosulfate, thiourea and halogen. A pilot feasibility test (Marchant and Broughton, 1987) had suggested that thioureation might result in acutely toxic byproducts even after treatment. Scientists of Swedish Academic of Sciences reported that thiourea is a carcinogen. Halogen is also a pollutant to the environment. Thiosulfate leaching appears to have very good potential as an effective and less hazardous procedure for gold and silver extraction from auriferous ores. In addition to being much less toxic and relatively cheap, it forms a stable anionic complex with gold but is less reactive to other metals, for instances, copper and carbonaceous materials, in comparison with cyanide."
