The Bureau of Mines constructed a process research unit (PRU) to demonstrate new technology for extracting zinc from sphalerite concentrates. Up to 9 kg/hr of sphalerite (ZnS) concentrate was reacted at ambient pressure in the PRU with 80 pct sulfuric acid at 160° to 180° C to produce zinc sulfate and elemental sulfur. The PRU consisted of a three-stage glass reactor system: a 4-liter premix stage in which feed was slurried with 78 to 82 pct H2S04, a 40-liter stirred reactor, and a ISO-liter settling stage in which high reaction conversions were effected and excess H2S04 for recycle was separated from insoluble ZnS04 and sulfur. Evolution of sulfur-containing gases was minimized by sub-surface addition of acid feed slurry to the stirred reactor and by exclusion of air from the reactor to prevent the oxidation of elemental sulfur. Conversion of zinc to zinc sulfate averaged over 99 pct at the optimum acid concentration of 80 pct. Total sulfur losses (primarily S02) were less than 2 pct of the sulfur in the sphalerite. Elemental sulfur remained in the insoluble portion of the settled reactor product after leaching with simulated spent zinc electrolyte containing sulfuric acid. The sulfur residue contained 75 to 89 pct sulfur. Neutral zinc sulfate, required for zinc electrowinning processes, was separated from the sulfuric acid leach solution by crystallization at -15° C as zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnS04?7H20). The crystallization operation simultaneously effected a partial concentration of the recycled electrolyte solution by removing water.

INTRODUCTION Gwinnett County, Georgia, is a part of the rapidly expanding metropolitan Atlanta Georgia area. Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of Atlanta, Gwinnett County has a current population in excess of 600,000 and is projected to reach a population of 1,200,000 by 2025. As a part of the County’s master plan to supply drinking water for the expanding population and to increase system reliability, the Gwinnett County Public Utilities Department undertook the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project. Figure 1 shows a vicinity map for the project. Prior to construction of the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project the County had a single raw water intake to feed water from Lake Sidney Lanier (Lake Lanier) into a filter plant for processing into potable water. This project together with a newly constructed water filter plant provides Gwinnett County additional capacity and system redundancy to prevent interruptions to the drinking water supply. Lake Lanier is a man made reservoir with over 800 km (500 miles) of shoreline and was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s for hydro electric power generation, flood control, and navigation benefits for the Chattahoochee River. Over time, Lake Lanier has become an increasingly important source of drinking water for the metropolitan Atlanta area. This paper focuses on the primary underground construction and lake tap components of the project including a 42.7 m (140 ft) deep pump station shaft 24.4 m(80 ft) in finished diameter transitioning to a 6.1 m (20 ft) finished diameter shaft, a3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter by 19.8 m (65 ft) deep intake shaft constructed in an average of 21.3 m (70 ft) of water, and a 190.5 m (625 ft) by 3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter modified horseshoe tunnel connecting the two shafts. This raw water intake system, in conjunction with the incorporated pump station with 8 pumps and dual1,829 mm (72 inch) pipelines, provides a system capacity of 1,091,062 m3/day(240 MGD) to two water filter plants and is expandable by the addition of pumps to1,500,210 m3/day (330 MGD). Parsons provided design and construction management services for the project. The $29.6 million contract to construct the project was awarded to W.L. Hailey &Company. Notice to proceed was given August 6, 2001 and substantial completion was achieved on January 20, 2004. Value engineering changes adopted for the project contributed to completing the project at a final cost of $28.8 million.

The correlation of power consumed by a tumbling mill with the dimensions, speed, and load has been attempted by three principal methods. One of these, the torque formula, has been reviewed critically elsewhere.' This approach, while analytical, disregards the individual motion and speed of the tumbling bodies and assumes that the gross geometry of the entire load is sufficient to establish the power requirement. A more general approach, using dimensional analysis, has been applied in this laboratory by the present authors1'1, and more recently by Rose.3 This disregards the internal conditions within the mill entirely and in effect is an empirical procedure for correlating data. Finally, the complete analysis of tumbling mill dynamics as first made by Davis' attempts to develop the power requirement from individual ball and rod paths and velocities. Although Davis' result is applicable only at a single speed for a given size and load it could be useful, since his optimum speed is at the upper limits of conventional tumbling mill practice. Where power values predicted by the Davis equation were compared with actual mill requirements, they were found too low for small mills and much too high for the largest mills. This suggested that the agreement with actual intermediate range requirements might be fortuitous, and the development of the equation was examined critically. The probable source of error was found to lie in an erroneous assumption made by Davis in converting the energy of ball or rod motion to power. With the same approach, but with different assumptions, a modified equation has been obtained which predicts results that are usually consistently high. This is to be expected, since it is assumed that there is no slip between load and shell and no interference among tumbling bodies. Both these effects should account for the difference. Development of Equation: When a cylindrical shell charged with a substantial weight of rods or balls is slowly rotated about a horizontal axis, the load surface first assumes an inclination that gradually increases to a maximum. Continued rotation results in failure within the load, characterized by a sliding of the top layers down the slope and a reduction in the angle of inclination. Further rotation again increases the angle, and the cycle repeats. If the speed is increased, there is continuous load failure and build-up and a continuous stream of rods or balls descends over the upcoming mass, which moves in circular arcs. The seawalls that surround Ellis Island were constructed in the early 1900s and now show varying degrees of deterioration. An innovative approach to the structural repair of the seawalls was developed, which consisted of the use of micropiles for stabilization of vertical and horizontal seawall movements. The micropiles were installed through the existing seawalls and penetrated through a thick overburden, consisting of soft alluvial deposits and relatively hard glacial till, and were bonded into Manhattan Schist. Drilling of the micropiles often encountered timber and other obstructions. The selection of micropiles for stabilization of the seawalls offered significant advantages over other foundation systems and over alternative soil improvement techniques. They allowed drilling through a variety of materials without the need for significant retooling or changes to the drilling procedure. This reduced the impact of foundation construction on the sensitive historical landscape and structures, and prevented the need for significant foundation work from the water side of the seawalls. In addition, micropiles offered relatively high installation rates and flexibility to adapt to the varying conditions along the seawalls.

The Porgera gold deposit is an epithermal gold base-metal deposit located in the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold-silver-sphalerite-galena-pyrite mineralisation is related to stocks and dykes of dioritic composition which have intruded a series of folded marine sediments, mainly shales and siltstones, often with calcareous and carbonaceous horizons, of middle Jurassic to middle Eocene age. The most intensely mineralised zone is at Waruwari Hill, where the mineralisation occurs predominantly as massive mixed sulphide veins, and less frequently as quartz-chlorite veins and as disseminations. Mineralisation occurs in all rock types and several phases of mineralisation have been recognised.

The upgrading project for two hydropower plants in Slovenia, Europe, requires two new pressure tunnels: Plave II (5.9 km Flysch) and Doblar II (3.6 km Limestone). It is the worldwide largest application of the Double-Shield TBM technology combined with an extremely thin-walled monoshell honeycomb lining system. The first drive has been completed by end of June 2000 achieving best performances of 50m/d and almost 1,100m/mth. In September 2000 the TBM started the second tunnel without any required adjustments due to geological or other reasons. Another 52m/d have been bored already within one production day of two 8 h shifts achieving a maximum penetration rate of more than 6m/h. The completion of the Doblar drive can be expected by February 2001.

"Commissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Québec, Canada. The CDS plant treats the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements. This installation enables the existing facility to reduce their sulphur emissions by over 90%.Proper planning of the different commissioning stages and staffing an integrated team are the most important factors required for a successful plant start-up. A strong Operational Readiness plan must be in place as early as the start of construction in order to ensure a smooth transition from commissioning to operations. Plant performance can meet or exceed performance criteria within the required timeframe if the proper group dynamic and good communication is established between construction, commissioning and operations teams.The road blocks encountered are often from systems that one assumes will operate without trouble such as air-conditioning, or design assumptions that were taken years earlier in feasibility process stages, namely the capacity of existing systems that will connect the new plant to the existing facilities. The challenges associated with rectifying these issues in addition to the requirements to properly start-up and operate a new plant without impacting production are great, and it is imperative to have the necessary resources to react quickly to any problems.IntroductionCommissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Québec, Canada. The combined, de-dusted off-gas from multiple kilns is sent to the CDS, which acts as an entrained fluid bed, where the gas is contacted with a water mist, re-circulated solids and hydrated lime. The SO2 from the gas stream and the available calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) from the hydrated lime dissolve in the water and react to ultimately form calcium sulphites and gypsum. The solid residue (referred to as CDS residue), is the primary by-product of the process."

Abandoned underground coal mine areas must either be sealed or ventilated to comply with federal mine regulations. Ventilation of these abandoned areas is often impractical due to roof falls and inadequate primary mine ventilation. If the area is sealed, a very complex ventilation system is set up. In which the gob "breathes" in and out due to barometric pressure fluctuations. The Gob Assistant is a computer program (for use on IBM compatible personal computers) which allows the prediction of air flows into and out of a sealed mine area. Gas flows with applicable control techniques are also modeled. This information is presented to the user who will decide which control technique, or combination of techniques will ultimately be applied. The Gob Assistant is an intelligent gob simulator that can reduce the guesswork involved in predicting the effects of sealing and control techniques before they are applied. This paper provides the fundamental principles upon which the Gob Assistant is based, verification of these principles, and an explanation of how these principles were integrated into the Gob Assistant.

"The recovery of gold by gravity from grinding circuits differs from virtually all other gravity recovery approaches in that stage (or unit) recoveries are low, typically 1 to 5%, but overall recoveries are generally in the 25 to 60% range, because individual gold particles are presented many times to the primary recovery unit. Full-scale recovery is difficult to predict from benchscale tests. Further, maximizing metallurgical recovery is generally not the primary objective, because of the more efficient downstream recovery circuit (flotation or cyanidation). In this paper, a new concept, the gravity recovery effort, is presented to assist in the design and optimization of gold gravity circuits. It is defined as the product of the circulating load treated by the primary gravity unit, the recovery of this unit, and the gold room recovery. Predicted gold recovery is linked to the recovery effort, the size distribution of gravity recoverable gold (GRG), the dimensionless retention time in the mill and the partition curve of GRG. A case study of economic optimization of the gravity recovery effort is presented. INTRODUCTIONPredicting gold gravity recovery from grinding circuits has always been a hit-and-miss exercise. The problem can be traced to the highly variable gravity recoverable gold (GRG) content of ores, high GRG circulating load, fraction of the circulating load treated, and performance of primary gravity recovery and gold room. Optimum selection of consumables will be discussed with regard to the facility to meet tentative toughness requirements in weldments. Finally, the development of welding procedure specifications will be considered in relation to the prevention of hot or cold cracking and lamellar tearing.Welding RequirementsGeneralThe exploitation of Canadian frontier oil and gas reserves will require a fleet of various types of offshore structures. These will include fixed jacket types and semi-submersibles for the East Coast with huge man-made islands and icebreakers for the Arctic regions. Both these regions will also require supply and drill ships plus subsea pipelines and cargo tankers for transportation. Clearly the welding of these items will plays large part in the over-all integrity and safety of exploration and production operations.The required development in structural steels and pressure vessel steels, for current and future offshore structures, to improve properties, particularly toughness for lower temperature service, has also prompted welding researchers to develop process and consumable combinations to match the parent plate specifications. This development has had to consider particular aspects of weldability such as a low susceptibility to cold cracking and preventing low HAZ toughness. Current research has centred on attempts to increase HAZ toughness with higher heat input welding of newly developed structural steels.The installation of Arctic region pipelines has provided a sound base for future, more complex fabrications in the most severe service temperatures in the Canadian frontier although few of the installations have been designed to the lowest possible exposed temperature of -62°C."

Continued market pressure on the US coal industry was the overriding factor affecting developments in underground mining in 1986. An oversupply of coal in the spot market kept prices low throughout the year and caused a number of operations to close their doors. Operators stepped up their efforts to improve productivity at existing operations. They made technology advances and improved their relations with employees. A continuing market-related development during 1986 was the divesting of coal properties and operations by major oil companies, which were faced with economic pressures in both the oil and coal industries. Further increases in contract mining production resulted as some larger operators were unable to compete in a tough economic environment. Longwall mining is still seen by many as the technology that will provide the necessary productivity to remain cost-effective. But the number of active faces in the US declined in 1986, as reserves were depleted and economics forced some closures. At the first Longwall USA meeting in June, much attention was placed on improved technology, as electro-hydraulic controls for roof supports gained acceptance. Other recent developments include shearer initiation of roof supports, automatic horizon control for shearer drums, and collection and storage of machine data for predicting maintenance requirements. The government and academic communities continued their research on dust control at longwall faces. Jankowski, Kissel, and Daniel, (October 1986, Mining Engineering), gave an overview of progress in longwall dust control. And Mukherjee, Singh and Jayarman (November 1986, Mining Engineering), recommended design guidelines for improving water spray systems for dust control. Surface subsidence Increasing attention is being given to surface subsidence. This is primarily because of longwall mining and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Improved methods of prediction of surface subsidence, especially computerized methods, are being continually developed. Mining engineering faculty at major universities such as Virginia are helping develop public policy and regulations concerning subsidence. As part of this effort, Unrug and Johnson identified major subsidence areas of Western Kentucky. Peng and Chen (February 1986, Mining Engineering), gave an overview of history and research of surface subsidence. And Elifrits and Aughenbaugh, (February 1986, Mining Engineering), discussed effects of moisture variations and overburden on subsidence. This research culminated in a Symposium on Surface Subsi¬dence at the SME 1986 Fall Meeting in St. Louis and the 2nd Workshop on Surface Subsidence at West Virginia University. Ground control in coal mining continued to be an item of major research interest. Some 30 papers were presented at the 5th International Conference on Ground Control in Mining at West Virginia University. And six sessions were related to coal mining at the 27th US Symposium on Rock Mechanics at the University of Alabama. At the 4th Annual Workshop, Generic Mineral Technology Center, Mine Systems Design and Ground Control emphasized efforts of the participating universities to improve ground control. Peng and Chiang summarized results of studying support capacity and roof behavior with longwall shield supports. And Unrug, Johnson, and Nandy analyzed the process of deterioration of shale roof in a case study of a room-and-pillar coal mine. The importance of geologic conditions in determining mining productivity is receiving increased attention in coal mine design in the US. Mullenex related, through case studies, the benefits to be derived through analyzing the depositional system of coalbeds as an integral part of mine design. Improved technology in this area was related by Lloyd, Semborski, and Stolarczyk. They discussed a case study of using radio imaging to indicate coal-seam discontinuities in advance of mining. Improved coal mining technology in general is being researched more heavily, to help improve US coal competitiveness. However, much of this research and development process has yet to be widely implemented. Equipment manufacturers are devoting more resources to development of continuous-haulage systems, mobile roof-supports, mine-monitoring systems, and predictive-maintenance systems using computers to extract machine data.

The use of micropiles is increasing for new construction and to retrofit distressed foundations in expansive soils. Typical micropiles in expansive soils have a lower section where the micropile grout is embedded in direct contact with the soil, and an upper section that is cased with rigid PVC pipe or other material to reduce the friction between the micropile and the surrounding expansive soil. In the upper cased section, the micropile grout is in direct contact with the inside of the casing. During construction, grout can flow upward into the annular space between the soil and the outside of the casing as the grout is tremied into the micropile. Thus, various interfaces may exist in a typical micropile, including soil-to-grout, grout-to-PVC, and soil-to-PVC. As the surrounding soil heaves, shear stresses are mobilized along the interfaces. The frictional characteristics of the interfaces are design variables that must be evaluated. For this study, an experimental program was conducted to evaluate the shear strength of the three interfaces listed above. Conventional direct shear testing was performed at a commercial testing laboratory. In addition, specialized testing was performed at Colorado State University (CSU). For the CSU testing, an interface testing protocol was designed using a modified triaxial cell to allow evaluation of the interface characteristics between rigid PVC and cylindrical specimens of grout or clay soil. It is shown that the shear strength of the soil-to-PVC and grout-to-PVC interfaces are similar, both of which are significantly lower than the shear strength of the soil-to-grout interface. This indicates that the use of a PVC casing in the upper portion of a micropile has a positive effect in reducing friction and the shear stresses resulting from expansive soil.

This publication describes a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines of devices and methods used for testing and splicing 4,160-volt and 440-volt cables and for providing ground-fault protection for 440-volt circuits, as developed and used by the electrical staff of the Tecumseh coal mine, an open-pit operation at Boonville, Ind. The testing and ground-fault devices described should find ready application in other open-pit mines, and, with suitable modifications for voltages involved, in underground mining. The devices and testing methods are based on sound engineering principles and are time-tested and economically feasible, Four devices are used: A high-voltage tester, and a low-voltage high- current tester, both for testing 4,160-volt cables; a tester for 440-volt cables; and, electronic ground-fault protective device for 440-volt cable circuits. All the cable testers and the grounding device were designed and built at the mine from standard parts. They are inexpensive, dependable, and job tested, An attempt has been made here to describe them in enough detail so that interested persons can assemble duplicate units.

The uphole bench extraction strategy at EKJV Management Pty Ltd?s Raleigh Mine, requires simultaneous horizontal and vertical exposure of paste filled stopes. In order to prevent excessive ore dilution, the paste fill must be of sufficient strength to prevent failure during exposure. A numerical modelling methodology has been developed to accurately simulate the initial stress distribution within paste filled stopes, together with the strain-softening loading response of paste fill material. Due to the narrow orebody width and high deformation behaviour of the host rock mass, high closure strains are likely to cause a stiff, brittle fill material to undergo crushing failure upon exposure. The stability of paste fill exposures at the Raleigh Mine was determined by conducting a series of three-dimensional numerical models that incorporate the extraction, filling and exposure sequence of paste filled stopes. Stability charts for 2.5 m and 3.5 m wide simultaneous horizontal and vertical exposures have been derived based upon the numerical modelling results. Implementation of the stability charts has proved successful in limiting the amount of ore dilution from paste fill and provides a basis to optimize paste fill cementation and stability throughout the life of the mine.

Volume II The purpose of this study is to explain reasons for the productivity differences in mining crews. The literature on group productivity is examined. Then a new approach to estimating productivity differences is proposed and estimated across seven different mines. The results indicate a fairly robust model in terms of explanatory power. Recommendations on how the model can be used as a managerial tool are presented.

The article illustrates the Hydromill technology, as applied in urban sites, and its advantages in terms of quality of the end product, mitigation of the construction impact, and optimization of the logistics at the site. Also highlighted are the main features of the excavation equipment and slurry treatment plant. Two recent urban applications of this technology in Europe are briefly described, together with the forthcoming application to the Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston. Introduction The Hydromill technology has been used extensively in Europe in the last decade for slurry wall construction in urban environments. In Italy, this technology has been applied by Ing. Giovanni Rodio & C., Impresa Costruzioni Speciali S.p.A. in two large projects. The first project is the construction of Stations Darsena and San Giorgio of the first metro line in Genova. The second project is the "Cut-and Cover" tunnel for the railway link in Torino. Hydromill technology will be used for the construction of the Soldier Pile Tremie Concrete walls of the Boston Central Artery Tunnel Project, contract C14C2, Utility Relocation at Fulton Street.

The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1931 was 30, a decrease of 20 fatalities or 40 per cent from the number killed in 1930. As a result of the decrease in the number of fatalities for 1931, the fatality curve of tie California petroleum industry reached its lowest point in nine years. Although reductions in personnel--which permitted the retention of a select and experienced class of workmen, decreased active field-development work, and curtailed production--undoubtedly have had a marked effect on reducing the number of fatalities in 1931, the decrease also has resulted from continued accident-prevention efforts. Statistics show that a direct relationship exists between development activity and the number of men accidentally killed in the drilling and producing division of the California petroleum industry. For example, when the average number of drilling wells in 1930 was 29 per cent less than in 1929, the number of men accidentally killed at drilling wells dropped 48 per cent; and when the average number of drilling wells in 1931 decreased 52 per cent from 1930, the number of fatalities at drilling wells decreased 58 per cent. The relationship between field-development work and fatality frequency is significant because each year at least 50 per cent of all the fatalities in the California petroleum industry occur in the drilling and producing division. This relationship should serve to guide the accident-prevention efforts of the industry, especially in the drilling and producing division, toward checking an increase in fatal accidents when development activity again takes an upward trend.

Reduction kinetics from slags containing CuO(0.5), ZnO, PbO, NiO and SnO into a Cu-based metal phase were subjected to computer simulation using a previously developed model for the kinetics of metal-slag-gas reactions that assumes mass-transfer control in all phases. The effects were examined of changing bulk Fe oxide activity, gas reducing potential, temperature, Fe content of the Cu phase and metal/slag ratio. The results permit practical conclusions to be drawn about industrial slag-cleaning practice, but the model is still limited in terms of thermodynamic inputs and the idealisation of reaction conditions
