This paper describes the specifications and capabilities of a 6 ft (1.83 m) diameter laboratory rotary cutting machine which was designed and fabricated under a Bureau of Mines (USBM) contract awarded to the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). The machine will be used for carrying out research and development programs aimed toward improving the design and operation of mechanical tunnel, raise and shaft boring equipment.

INTRODUCTION AND SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES An area in the midwest overlying abandoned room-and-pillar mine workings at, shallow depth has been experiencing subsidence movements with associated damage to surface structures. Other coal companies in the area have also been having similar experience. A 16 - month cooperative study between a mining company and the Department of Mining Engineering at SIUC was developed with the following objectives. 1) Determine the extent to which surface and subsurface movements were complete in the area, 2) Identify the mechanism(s) of subsidence in the area, 3) Determine the influence of geology and hydrology of the area on subsidence movements, 4) Observe the conditions of abandoned underground workings with a borehole TV camera, 5) Characterize the extent of damage and monitor possible progressive damage to selected surface structures, and 6) Make recommendations to a) minimize further damage to surface structures in the area, b) identify future areas that may be affected by these movements and c) modify mining systems to minimize these movements.

"The purpose of this paper are (1) to present a broad picture of the recognized methods of measuring the various forms of atmospheric pollution; (2) to evaluate the significance of such measurements; and (3) to suggest suitable methods for obtaining comparative information on the concentration of contaminants in city air.The atmosphere (the gaseous envelope surrounding the earth) consists of a mixture of gases. These gases and their usual proportions are:4/The volume of water vapor in the atmosphere ranges from almost zero (in very cold weather) to about 5 percent arid averages about 1.2 percent.Strictly speaking, any other substance in the atmosphere or an excess of any of the substances mentioned (with the possible exception of water) is a contaminant. Needless to say, there are many contaminants in the atmosphere.In accordance with their physical state, contaminants may be classified as gaseous or particulate, and the latter may be classified as solid or liquid matter. Particulate matter, especially when dispersed in some medium such as air or some other gas, sometimes is referred to as dispersoid, and the complete system of gas and dispersoid is referred to as aerosol.All substances on the earth are potential sources of atmospheric contaminants. Combustible materials (particularly fuel for heating and power), sea water, earth or soil, metals, and animals (including man) are some of the important sources of contaminants.Ordinarily gases are produced by chemical processes, whereas dispersoids are produced by both chemical and physical processes. There are two general dispersoid-producing processes: (1) Condensation, in which molecules join to form larger units or particles, and (2) disintegration, in which large units are reduced to the particulate range (which for the purpose of this article may be considered to be from 100 microns, or 1/254 inch, down to molecular size) by such processes as crushing, grinding, abrading, and atomizing.“Condensoid"" is a convenient term for dispersoids formed by condensation, and ""disintegrasoid"" for those formed by disintegration. "The Cigar Lake project will develop the world’s second largest high grade uranium deposit. The Cigar Lake Phase 1 orebody contains approximately 226 million pounds U3O8 at an average grade of 20.7% U3O8. The mine, to be operated by Cameco Corporation, will use a unique water jet boring mining method to cut previously frozen ore. A distinctive ore handling design is required to handle the high grade ore slurry exiting the mining machines. The ore will be crushed and ground underground, with the ore slurry then pumped to surface. Loaded into purpose-designed containers on tractor-trailer units, the ore slurry will be trucked to Cogema Resources Incorporated’s McClean Lake mill. McClean Lake will leach all of the ore. Forty-three percent of the resulting uranium solution will remain at McClean Lake for processing into yellowcake. The other 57% of the uranium solution will be shipped to Cameco’s Rabbit Lake mill for processing into yellowcake there. Detailed design for the Cigar Lake project is now underway. Barring regulatory or market delays, production could start up as soon as early 2005.INTRODUCTIONThe Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan hosts a number of large uranium mining and milling operations, including Cluff Lake, Key Lake, McArthur River, McClean Lake and Rabbit Lake. Underhand mining with cemented mill tailings for backfill has proven to be a safe and effective alternative to conventional overhand mining for rockburst prone mines. The ability of the cemented sandfill to survive a rockburst shock wave without failing has been observed at mines in the Coeur d?Alene Mining District many times in the last twenty years. To better understand the dynamic loading of this commonly used support material the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed laboratory experiments using a split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) to quantify the maximum stress and energy absorption of cemented mill tailings from the Galena mine. Cylindrically shaped cemented backfill specimens aged 28 days were placed in the split Hopkinson pressure bar testing apparatus and a dynamic load was applied. The measured peak dynamic compressive strength of the cemented sandfill was 10.6 MPa (1540 psi) and is approximately twice the static unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 5.5 MPa (800 psi). These test data showed about 95% of the initial energy was reflected away from the backfill and only 5% of the energy was absorbed. This may help to explain why backfilled stopes could withstand seismic events up to 3.5 Richter magnitude (Ml). When a compressive rockburst wave impacts a stope a large amount of the stress and energy is reflected away. The reflected wave is a tensile wave which creates tensile cracks and spalling in the entire wall of the stope. The backfill supports the damaged wall rock and holds it in place. Some of the stress and energy of the rockburst is transmitted into the backfill and because the backfill is being dynamically loaded it has a strength that is twice its static value and absorbs a substantial amount of rockburst energy. Although mining in deep underground mines is an extremely hazardous occupation, the use of underhand mining with cemented backfill for static and dynamic ground control increases the safety of the workers.

With increasing environmental constraints on the levels of disturbance induced by blasting operations upon nearby residents, there is an increasing need to be able to design cautious blasting with greater precision. Therefore, determination of maximum amount of explosive per delay for a certain distance especially in large blasts is of great importance for the elimination of these environmental problems. Although too many research studies had been carried out in the past in order to eliminate environmental issues produced from blasting unfortunately a general approach or formula has not been established yet because of the complexity of the matter. In addition to the wave and ground motion characteristics, the complexity of blasting parameters and site factors restrict the developing a general criterion. So experimental site-specific studies should be still done in order to predict and control blasting effects. This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out in Espey Open-Pit Boron (Colemanite) Mine located on the west side of the central Anatolia near Kütahya province in Turkey. Within the scope of this study, ground vibration components were measured for 13 shots during bench blast optimisation studies in order to predict peak particle velocity level for this site. In blasting operations; ANFO and Powergel Magnum 600 (blasting agent), Powergel Magnum (priming) and delay electric detonators (firing) were used as explosives. Parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the source and the station) were recorded carefully and the ground vibration components were measured for all blast events using 4 different types vibration monitors (3 White Mini-Seis and 1 Instantel Minimate Plus Models). Then, the data pairs of scaled distance and particle velocity obtained from the 38 record events were analysed statistically. At the end of statistical evaluation of the data pairs, an empirical relation which gives average line at 95% confidence level and upper bound 95% prediction line with a reasonable correlation coefficient was established between peak particle velocity and scaled distance.

Four friction pile load test programs, including 23 tension tests and 9 compression tests, have been performed as part of the Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston, Massachusetts. The tests, performed on both precast, prestressed concrete (PPC) piles and steel piles, yielded the following adhesion values: [Soil Type Clay Clay Glacial Till Interbedded Sand and Clay Interbedded Sand and Clay Pile Type PPC Steel Steel Steel PPC Adhesion (psf) 610 to 1,200 230 to 900 220 to 550 680 1,280 ] The adhesion appears to be affected by differences in pile material type, with PPC piles having higher adhesion than steel piles. However, part of the apparent difference for the clay may be due to differences in time between driving and testing. The significant range of test data means that the need for site specific testing to determine or verify design values of adhesion should be considered during design. Creep rates at loads near failure ranged from about 0.02 to 0.18 inches per log cycle of time, with most values in the range of about 0.04 to 0.08 inches per log cycle of time.

A recent Evening Post Headline read 'Officialdoms Inertia Risking Millions in Growth Strategy'. The article beneath that headline outlined the difficulties encountered by the Government's growth strategy projects and included the paragraph 'public efforts by Government to brush up communication of the widespread nature of its growth strategy is believed to have been matched by efforts in private by some ministers to overcome their frustration at the constant delay while reports and paper work are moved between departments and through the system'. The article went on to point out that these delays could cost New Zealand millions of dollars in lost overseas exchange savings. We as responsible citizens should be appalled or at least concerned that such costly delays should or even could occur. But those on the outside of the system who spend much of their working life prodding, reminding, pleading, cajoling, even begging, the bureaucracy should be excused a smirk or a smile or even a good belly laugh. The Minister is usually a part of the bureaucracy passing judgment on someone else's proposals. This time the Government has plans of its own. Plans which it wishes to see implemented as rapidly as possible and even with the assistance of the precautionary National Development Act with its 'fast track' provisions those plans have got bogged down in the bureaucratic machine which this Government has done as much as any other to create. In the circumstances, the thought of Her Majesty's Ministers frustrated at the constant delay while reports and paper work are moved between departments and through the system is not unpleasing.

"Plant 2 at the Kinross Paracatu gold operation in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, was commissioned in late 2008. Designed to be the largest tonnage, lowest grade gold milling operation in the world, Plant 2’s throughput has steadily increased towards its design capacity of 5087 tons per hour.The plant employs a gold-specific flotation scheme to recover the majority of gold, which is present as discrete free gold particles. Additional gold is recovered by jigs in the grinding circuit, and the jig concentrates are reground, upgraded and subjected to intensive cyanide leaching. The flotation cleaner concentrate is reground and leached using a conventional CIL circuit.One year after start-up, with the plant stabilizing operationally, plant circuit surveys were completed by a joint team from Kinross Paracatu and Blue Coast Metallurgy Ltd. The surveys audited the flotation and concentrate treatment circuits to investigate the metallurgical performance.This paper describes the Plant 2 operation and how the surveys were designed and executed. Some of the quality control systems that were employed to provide meaningful data from such a low grade gold ore are described and findings and actions taken to improve metallurgy as a consequence of the surveys are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Paracatu mine is located two kilometres north of the city of Paracatu, in the north western portion of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, 230 km southeast of the national capital Brasília (shown in Figure 1). The present day Paracatu mining operation, fully owned by Kinross Gold, through its Brazilian subsidiary Rio Paracatu Mineração (RPM) is designed to be the largest tonnage, lowest grade free milling gold operation in the world.The deposit currently hosts some 1.2 billion tonnes of ore at a grade of ~0.41 g/t gold, hence contains a total gold reserve of over 20 million ounces. At a designed plant throughput rate of 61 Mt/year the mine life goes beyond 2030."

To increase the capability to predict the effectiveness of a flame arrester in the cooling of hot combustion gases expelled through a flame arrester, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an equilibrium. model and one-and three-dimensional transient thermal models of a flame arrester, which were used to predict the temperature evolution within the arrester and the maximum temperature at the external surface of the arrester. The models account for convective and conductive heat transport within the arrester and radiative losses at the exit surface. The gas flow through the arrester is established from an empirically derived relationship between the gas velocity and the pressure gradient across the arrester. Lateral heat loss from the arrester to the enclosure wall is accounted for in the three-dimensional model. The model calculations for maximum outside surface temperature of the arrester showed an approximate agreement with measured values for vent-area-to-enclosure-volume ratios between 12 and 28 in2?ft-3.

As part of the PHX Sky TrainTM project at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, Arizona, the existing traffic lanes at the 44th Street underpass below the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Bridge will be shifted to accommodate the people mover guideway. The proposed reconfiguration and reconstruction of 44th Street required the utilization of micropiles and permeation grouting to resist the lateral forces induced by cutting into the slope below the existing bridge abutment footing. This paper discusses the evaluation of the existing bridge abutment, including analysis of the original foundation system, and design, installation and testing of a new micropile-supported retaining wall to support the cut slope below the existing bridge abutment foundation. A monitoring program was implemented during construction to evaluate the short- and long-term performance of the bridge abutment. Instrumentation included survey monitoring points, inclinometers, tiltmeters and crack gauges. A micropile load testing program was conducted to verify design assumptions concerning micropile axial and lateral loading. Numerical analyses (using PLAXIS software) were performed to predict the short- and long-term behavior of both the abutment wall and the bridge foundations. Movement data collected from the monitoring program indicate that the wall and bridge foundations are performing satisfactorily and within the general bounds of predicted movements. The results from the numerical modeling using PLAXIS software showed that the proposed solution is deemed adequate to provide the needed global stability with an acceptable factor of safety, along with acceptable deformation.

This report describes a method for designing and constructing ground beds that has been developed under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Mines. The procedures for designing and constructing a driven-rod ground bed with a resistance of 5 ohms or less are given. Some of the theory of soil resistivity and fall-of-potential resistance measurements is included. Results of a bed constructed at the Bureau of Mines mine car roadway are presented.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 269 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during, calendar year 1979 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. Field reconnaissance and laboratory tests on clay from South Windsor, Hartford County, Conn., indicate that the clay is suitable for lightweight aggregate raw material. Exploration of the deposit supports the conclusion that the reserves of clay are sufficient for economical mining operations to produce lightweight aggregate. Preliminary tests indicated that the clay has a short bloating range. Initial expansion occurred at 2,000° F, and at 2,100° F the clay was slightly overfired and sticky. Rotary kiln tests verified the preliminary data, and these tests showed that the clay would make a good lightweight aggregate if the processing temperature and the kiln feed sizes were closely controlled. Lightweight concrete made from the processed aggregate had properties comparable to those of concrete made from a commercial clay aggregate.

The Getchell Mine, near Winnemucca, NR, was discovered in the 1930s and was initially mined to recover gold from oxide ores. During the 1940s and 1950s, gold was recovered from the highly refractory arsenic sulfide ores using horizontal kilns to roast the ores. During the 1960s, fluid bed roasters were used to oxidize the ore and recover the gold. The mine was shut down from 1968 through 1985. In 1985, heap leaching was started on the low-grade oxide ores that were available. In 1989, a pressure oxidation circuit was started to recover gold from the higher grade sulfide ores. Flowsheet The basic plant flowsheet of the Getchell Mine are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The plant was designed to process a nominal 2.7 kt/d (3000 stpd) of ore with about an 85% onstream availability and a gold production of 15.5 kg/d (500 oz/ day). Run-of-mine (ROM) ore is fed directly to a wet semiautogenuous grinding (SAG) mill after the +457-µm (+18in.) rock is removed on a stationary grizzly. From the SAG mill, the ore goes to a ball mill where it is ground to 80% -75 µm (-200 mesh) and is then sent to a thickener. The SAG and ball mill operate in closed circuit using cyclones.

These investigations were undertaken as part of the Bureau of Mines program for the development and evaluation of high temperature nonmetallic materials. This report consists of thermal expansion and phase inversion measurements by high-temperature X-ray diffractometry on the principal oxides of beryllium (BeO), calcium (CaO), titanium (TiO2 ), zirconium (ZrO2 ), hafnium (HfO2), and thorium (ThO2); all were high-purity commercially available oxides. Thermal expansion values were calculated from unit cell dimensions measured at selected temperatures. Expansion was determined parallel to each major crystallographic axis for the anisotropic oxides: BeO, TOi2, ZrC2, and HfO2. Combined random and systematic errors in the thermal expansion values are considered to be less than 3 percent of the total expansion at 500° C. and approximately 2 percent at 1,000° C. No hysteresis in the expansion curves was noted between heating and cooling cycles. The Bureau's values were compared with published expansion measurements obtained by X-ray diffraction, dilatometric, interferometric, and telemicroscopic techniques. For anisotropic oxides, average linear expansion values were calculated from the volume expansion.

Loveday (National Institute for Metallurgy, Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa) - The paper and subsequent technical note' describing a method of determining the parameters of the three-parameter size-distribution equation developed in the paper were read with much interest. This equation was also used at National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) to describe size distributions in grinding tests, because it was necessary to have a single equation to describe the size distribution at any time during a test. A graphical method also was used to determine the three parameters, and the use of this method as an alternative to Professor Harris's latest method is discussed here. This report describes exploration, development, and exploitation methods, and summarizes costs at the Stormy Day mine, which was discovered in 1941. Several shipments of tungsten ore were made in 1944 to the Metals Reserve Company, Salt Lake City, Utah. The purchase of tungsten by the Federal Government, which began in 1951, stimulated interest in tungsten, and a successful program of exploration with participation of the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration (DMEA) indicated enough ore to warrant development of the property. Development work comprised drifting, crosscutting, and raising. Shrinkage stoping was used for mining the ore. Operations were suspended in October 1956, when the Federal Government terminated its purchase program. Total production of the mine was approximately 20,000 tons of tungsten ore. INTRODUCTION This information circular is one of a series, prepared in cooperation with various mining companies and published by the Bureau of Mines, relating to methods and costs of equipping and developing mining properties in the United States.

This manual provides instructions for installing, operating, and maintaining a protective canopy on the Galis Mfg. Co. face drill. The instructions are based upon an actual installation made in the mine on face drill model 460-S. The parts list and engineering drawings for the protective canopy are included at the end of the manual. And a discussion of some alternative design concepts is also included. The manual can also be used for retrofitting other face drills with similar protective canopies. Skilled mechanics can determine if the instructions herein would be applicable to the other face drills and can determine any necessary modifications if they are not.

Three complete connector assemblies and ten separate contacts were submitted to a series of tests to establish the connector permissibility and compliance with the Bureau of Mines' research Contract H 0110423. Test Procedure TPC-0100 was coordinated, and the test plan approved by the Bureau as fully complying with the intent of the contract for the low voltage, medium voltage and high voltage A.C. connectors. The components and connector assemblies have been demonstrated in testing that they meet or exceed all the requirements of the test procedure.
