The rock mechanics approach to stability problems of steep rock slopes dealt with in this article has particular reference to the concept and methods of analysis developed by the Salzburg, Austria, school of rock mechanics. These theories are based on the principal postulate of the anistropy of the technological properties of in-situ rock masses. The present approach, which is more in line with geological engineering concepts, differs distinctively from the soil mechanics and engineering geological concepts commonly practiced in the United States. PRINCIPAL ENGINEERING APPROACH TO GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS AVAILABLE ENGINEERING CONCEPTS At the present time two different concepts are available for engineering analysis of underground structures and foundations in different earth material: soil mechanics and rock mechanics. Of these two branches, soil mechanics is, after 40 years of initially revolutionary and more recently evolutionary development, well established. Its principal concept of replacing in-situ soils or rock masses by perfectly homogeneous substitues has resulted in many practicable methods of analysis which, if applied with judgement, have resulted in successful applications throughout the world. Conversely, rock mechanics is still in the early stages of revolutionary development. Few, if any, standard concepts or methods of analysis have been established. Opinions vary widely. At present the professional background of an investigator very often determines the engineering concept to be applied to a particular problem, rather than its actual requirements if considered objectively. This paper stresses the rock mechanics or geological engineering point of view advocated by the Salzburg group. A review of the soil mechanics concepts is considered beyond the scope of this paper. A study carried out in the iron basin of Lorraine (North-East of France) highlighted the existence of under-oxygenated and noxious gas emissions (carbon dioxide, radon…) in vast built-up areas related to former mine workings. Site investigations showed that the gas flow was mainly due to natural thermal air circulation between old mines and external atmosphere. The main hazards associated with this flow of gas and its potential accumulation in confined volumes in buildings are asphyxiation and intoxication. A further study is in progress in order to better understand the origin of the gas generation within the old iron mine workings. Following the first hypothesis, the carbon dioxide emission is mainly due to the specific hydro-geo-chemical process associating the pyrite oxidation with the acid dissolution of carbonates. This evaluation of the sulfurous acid process for the production of metallurgical-grade alumina is the first of a series concerning various known methods of extracting alumina from low-grade aluminous materials and was undertaken to permit comparison with other processes. In the process with which this Bureau of Mines report is concerned, calcined clay is leached under pressure with 20 percent sulfurous acid and then filtered to remove a siliceous residue. The aluminum sulfite remaining in the filtrate is precipitated as a monobasic sulfite which, together with iron sulfite, is then decomposed under pressure to form a crude alumina hydrate and iron oxide. This intermediate product is purified in a modified Bayer process to yield alumina suitable for electrolytic reduction to aluminum. A study estimate (16)3 is used for these evaluations. The capital cost, not including land, is estimated at $95,701,600 on a Marshall and Stevens index basis of 240.0 for a plant producing 1,000 tons a day of alumina or 350,000 tons a year. The annual operating cost for this size plant is estimated at $22,831,100 or $65.23 per ton of alumina using clay at $1 per ton. Depreciation and local taxes are included in the estimate, but profit and Federal taxes are not considered.

"Tough economical conditions and high grade but fine-grained ore processing have forced the mining industry to look for more efficient processes. Isa Mill Technology for ultra-fine and fine grinding is one such process employed at several mining operations in Australia including Mount Isa Mines Limited in Australia. Mount Isa Mines is a business unit of MIM Holdings Limited. MIM is an Australian-based international mining and mineral processing company with around 8000 employees worldwide. Major products include copper, gold, zinc-lead-silver, coal and technology sales.The Isa Mill is a horizontal stirred mill with sizes up to 3 m3 chamber net volume and 1 120 kW installed motor. It was jointly invented by Mount Isa Mines of Australia and Netzsch Feinmahltecknik GmbH of Germany for ultra-fine and fine grinding duties in the minerals industry. Isa Mill operations started in 1994 at the Mount Isa Mines Leadzinc Concentrator and then at MIM’s McArthur River Mine in 1995. These Isa Mills have been used to liberate sphalerite and galena at Mount Isa and silica at McArthur River by grinding to less than 7 micron.This paper discusses the Isa Mill Technology and reports on the metallurgical performance of the Isa Mills at Mount Isa Mines, including work done over the last 9 years to improve mill design, process efficiency and maintenance, which has resulted in the current state-of-the-art Isa Mill Technology.INTRODUCTIONThe current leadzinc deposits at Mount Isa Mines (George Fisher, Hilton and Isa) have an average grade of 10.5% zinc, 7.2% lead and 165g/t silver. Fine grinding, in particular in the zinc retreatment circuit requiring a milled product P80 of 7 micron, is essential to treat the ores from the Mount Isa Mines deposits. Every one micron size reduction in the zinc retreatment circuit below a P80 of 10 micron improves the overall plant zinc recovery by 1%, resulting in an increase in revenue of about 1 million dollars per annum."

The overall purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate, in the laboratory, instrumentation and procedures which might allow for the use of physical measurements of earmuff attenuation which would yield results equivalent to those obtained from psychophysical measures of attenuation. The ultimate goal was to evaluate techniques which might subsequently prove feasible for physical measurement of earmuff attenuation in the field. Current instruments were modified to have a response similar to differrences observed in earmuff attenuation as observed in Volume 1 of the current contract. Mining noise spectra were selected and presented to a single subject seated in a diffuse noise field. The subject wore one of the muffs evaluated in the earlier study and was also fitted with two physical sound measurement systems. A linear system measured the "outside" noise level and a linear system plus "correction" filter measured the "in-side" noise level. These measurements indicated that, under the procedures presented in this report, a laboratory method for measuring earmuff attenuation is feasible and yields results comparable to an extensive psycho-physical procedure.

"Potassium is one of the three basic plant nutrients along with nitrogen and phosphorus. There is no substitute for potassium compounds in agriculture; they are essential to maintain and expand food production.Potash is extracted from buried ancient evaporites by underground or solution mining. This accounts for most of the potassium produced. Another important source is brine from landlocked water bodies, such as the Dead Sea, Salar de Atacama or Great Salt Lake.About 95% of potash produced worldwide is used in agriculture. The rest is found in several other industrial uses, including glass manufacturing, soaps, plastics and pharmaceuticals.Currently, three producers: IMC, PCS and Agrium operate 8 conventional and two solution mines in Saskatchewan, five of which run froth flotation circuits, two heavy media-flotation, two run forced crystallization and one natural crystallization.Potash in SaskatchewanPotash was discovered in Saskatchewan in the early 1940’s while drilling for oil. The deposits lie diagonally across the southern plains of Saskatchewan sloping southerly from a 1,000m depth at Saskatoon to more than 1,600 m depth at Belle Plaine and up to 3,000 m in depth in North Dakota. The known deposits are massive, accounting for more than 40% of the world’s known reserves."

The Bureau of Mines is involved in research directed toward the utilization of municipal solid waste. One of the primary objectives is the recycling of the magnetic fraction of municipal solid waste (raw refuse). This is consistent with one of the Bureau's goals, which is to minimize the requirements for mineral commodities by maximizing metals recovery from secondary domestic resources, In this investigation, cupola trials were made using combinations of refuse scrap with shredded automobile scrap under basic and acid slag practices. Furnace operating information and the behavior of alloying and tramp elements was obtained. The research showed that it is possible to utilize up to 60 percent refuse scrap in the cupola under basic practice and 30 percent under acid practice, Aluminum in refuse scrap, present in bimetallic cans, increased the recoveries of silicon and manganese charged to the cupola. Increased use of refuse scrap provided iron of lower sulfur. The alumina resulting from oxidation increased the slag volume. The aluminum and tin contents of the iron increased with increasing levels of refuse scrap in the charge. Lead was not a problem with respect to contamination of the iron. In basic practice, operation of the cupola was satisfactory since all slags were adequately fluid. In acid practice, operation became troublesome above the 45-percent level. Under both practices, the cupola iron melting rate decreased. Particulates in scrubber water and stack condensate samples contained lead, zinc, and tin, and the dust load increased. The tensile and transverse strengths of the iron produced under both practices are reported.

"The Pulp Chemistry Monitor (PCM) has been installed and operated in a number of concentrators in Australasia, and has produced some very interesting results. PCM measures the pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, temperature and oxygen demand of process streams within a concentrator continuously and in real time.In the example presented in the paper the cleaner feed pulp chemistry is measured, and related back to changes in the mineralogy as well as variations in metallurgical response. For example, a decrease in Eh and dissolved oxygen as well as an increase in the oxygen demand. These changes in the pulp chemistry appear to coincide with increases in the feed grades, probably higher pyrite grades. Further, these variations in pulp chemistry and feed mineralogy have a negative impact on the concentrate grade and recovery.The implication is that if the pulp chemistry is monitored it is possible to predict changes in the mineralogy of the system, and from this the metallurgical response. Further, the changes in pulp chemistry can be used in a control system to counter the changes in mineralogy and maintain the metallurgy.IntroductionIt has long been recognized at a fundamental level that the flotation behaviour of sulphide minerals is dependent on the pH and Eh of the system (for example: Tolun and Kitchener, 1964; Woods, 1976). However, measuring pulp chemical parameters within an operating concentrator has had limited attention. Woodcock and Jones (1970a and b) were among the first to actually collect data from operating plants. Jones and Woodcock (1984) identified some of the chemical complexities of flotation pulps, and noted that most concentrators already operate at high levels of metallurgical performance but there was still considerable scope for improvement. These gains would, in part come from more effective chemical control. In the same volume, Healy (1984) discussed metal ion hydrolysis and precipitation, redox chemistry and how the surface chemistry of sulphide minerals can be influence flotation behaviour. The impact of grinding environment on the pulp chemistry and flotation response of a complex polymetallic sulphide ore is discussed by Forssberg and Subrahmanyam (1993). Their work essentially contrasts the pulp chemical and flotation performance of pulps ground with conventional ferrous grinding media to a fully autogenous system. The data suggested that the reduction or removal of iron hydrolysis contamination from the system could have a positive influence on flotation behaviour, and perhaps the first stage of “controlling” the chemistry of the system should be in the grinding circuit. Grano et al (1995) demonstrated that the collection of pulp, solution and surface chemical data could identify weaknesses within a concentrator, and from these data develop, test and implement solutions that improved the process. Greet et al (2006) showed that the pulp chemical trends observed through primary grinding and rougher flotation circuits of most sulphide flotation concentrators are approximately the same. There are differences in the magnitude of various pulp chemical parameters (pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, temperature and oxygen demand) as a result of variations in the feed mineralogy and processes employed. Further, it was noted the Eh shifted to more reducing values of the ten days measurements were collected, and this change could be traced to an increase in the iron sulphide content of the feed. Metallurgically, this resulted in an increase in nickel recovery through the recovery of nickeliferous iron sulphides, and a decrease in nickel concentrate grade."

A glance at the accompanying table reveals that for the first time in many years the industrial minerals field did not post significant gains in production. Gypsum, cement, sand and gravel, and crushed stone production-which are very sensitive to construction industry performance-barely managed to stay even, or in fact, declined slightly. Even barite production, in spite of increased oil and gas drilling, was off 5% in 1979 from 1978. Domestic fluorspar production continued to decline while imports, primarily from Mexico, South Africa, and Spain, rose 11%. Worldwide production of iodine (which is used primarily as a catalyst, animal feed additive, and in ink and colorants, stabilizers, pharmaceuticals, photographic film, and disinfectants) grew about 9% on a worldwide basis-from 10.75 Tg to 11.16 Tg. This does not include US production. The two US producers increased demand as apparent domestic production increased about 5%. Increasing energy costs and the transportation situation have had a prohibitive effect on the industrial minerals field. The critical shortage of railroad cars, according to consultant Neil Johnson, is due to several factors: • High capital investment rind interest rates needed to build new equipment, • Accidents, obsolescence, and failure to repair equipment reduced car availability, •Reduction in some train schedules due to fuel economy, and •Increased turnaround time as a result of new safety regulations. Railroad rates have increased an average of 7% per year for the past 10 years. Last year's increases were about 11.1% due to fuel costs and surcharges. Truck shipments have increased their penetration in certain areas of the southeast because of the shortage of box cars and the producers' demand for quick shipment. Some producers report a 15-20% increase in truck use. In the feldspar-mica area, which formerly made most shipments by rail, trucks are now used for about half the shipments. Marketing prices, as expected, increased due to higher costs for energy, power, labor, and supplies used in production. Estimated average price increases were about 10% which, in many cases, did not cover increased production costs. Hydroblasting is considered a distinct soil improvement technique from explosive compaction, though the blast designs for the two techniques are similar. Hydroblasting is a three step process developed for densifying unsaturated, collapsible soils, especially loess. The required steps are: prewetting the soil to an adequate saturation, placing and detonating the explosive charges, and consolidating the soil (squeezing the water out of the pore spaces between the soil particles under gravity) to a denser state.

Mine sealing programs for the alleviation of acid mine drainage were begun by the Federal Government in the '30's. As part of an acid mine research project to The Ohio State University, a field test was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of mine seals for reducing mine acid. Details of the tests made at the McDaniels mine show the feasibility of air-sealing and flooding an acid-producing drift coal mine. Work by the University continues. The Federal Government undertook in the early thirties an extensive mine sealing program for the alleviation of acid mine drainage. In the states of West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania many general summaries have been made on this program but no critical evaluation with supporting data has been found on the effectiveness of mine seals for reducing mine acid. Because of this it was decided to undertake a field testing program as part of an acid mine research project of the Engineering Experiment Station, The Ohio State University. The objective of this phase of the project was to develop and install a field research laboratory for acid mine drainage studies. Specifications for such a mine laboratory were developed and resulted from the following considerations: 1) Size and preservation—the test mine shou1d be of limited size to permit frequent and detailed examinations; it should be in a reasonably sound condition to permit safe entry. 2) Isolation—the mine should be physically separated from all other mines. 3) Openings—a minimum number would be desirable to reduce the sealing problem. 4) Structure—the mine especially near the openings should be structurally sound. 5) Acid production—the mine should be producing significant quantities of acid. After considerable searching, the McDaniels mine was selected in the Hocking coal field in Vinton County just above Lake Hope State Park in southeastern Ohio. The small drift mine in the middle Kittaning coal consisted of two small rooms with one mine opening about 6 ft above a seasonal stream bed. Before it was finally decided to seal the mine, a short study was made of the acid drainage over several months. Fig. 1 shows a plot of acidity (milligrams per liter), flow (gallons per minute), and acid production (pounds per day) vs time over the sampling period. The Barrick Osborne concentrator has gone through a number of upgrades since commissioning and has increased production from the original 119 t/h design capacity to a milling throughput of 265 t/h in 2008. This was achieved incrementally over several years, by maximising operating efficiencies, in order to minimise capital expenditure, and take advantages of economies of scale; but more importantly it was reached with no measurable loss of recovery. Osborne currently processes a blend of underground and open pit material from the nearby Trekelano deposit. Following primary/secondary crushing, the material is processed through a rod/ball mill grinding circuit ahead of rougher/scavenger flotation that produces a copper concentrate. Osborne was seeking a further increase in plant throughput of the order of 15 per cent, but at more sustainable levels of secondary crusher plant utilisation. In early 2008, Osborne contracted Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) to review the entire process from run-of-mine feed to final copper concentrate. This review would be done concurrently with surveys of both the crushing/grinding and flotation circuits being performed at the same time. The outcome would be a steady-state model of the complete flow sheet allowing the crushing/grinding model to interact with the flotation circuit model, such that overall process optimisation was possible. This was to apply both by exploring the operating limits of the currently installed plant, as well as looking at the logical next stage of capital plant expansions. Surveys of the crushing and grinding circuits were conducted at the Osborne concentrator in May 2008. The main objective of the surveys was to review the potential of increasing grinding throughput whilst maintaining the flotation feed 80 per cent passing size. This would also require improving the efficiency of the crushing circuit which was already operating in excess of 80 per cent of the time. Steady-state simulations were performed using the developed circuit models to identify opportunities to increase throughput and alleviate high circulating loads in both the secondary crushing and grinding circuits. Due to operational changes, the recommendations resulting from this project were considered by Osborne but have as yet only been partially implemented.  This paper covers part A or the crushing and grinding component of the project. A separate paper discussing part B or flotation is also being presented at this conference. The results of interactive simulations between the flotation and grinding circuit models are included in part B of this paper.

"Efficient use of land is constantly requiring more underground construction. Minimized execution time and disturbance to surroundings and nearby structures are essential benefits for all construction techniques. To meet the demands of a modern construction project, suppliers have to be able to provide high-quality and tailor-made products just on time. RD pile wall is a retaining wall based on drilled steel pipe piles which are connected to each other with special interlocking profiles. RD pile wall is a solution which enables penetration of overburden soil, dense fill layers including stones and boulders, and embedding into the bedrock in one single operation. Several test installations and laboratory tests have been made to develop the system and to test and improve the water tightness of the wall. Beside these tests, RD pile wall has also proven its reliability in almost 70 projects. Largest project so far has been Pasila Tripla project in Helsinki, Finland. A permanent retaining wall with surface area of 18,000 m2 (193,750 ft2), excavation depth of 21 m (68 ft) and over 17 m (56 ft) of water pressure was made with 711 mm (28”) and 406.4 mm (16”) pile sizes. Piles were delivered to site in one piece with lengths up to 33.5 m (110 ft).INTRODUCTIONExcavations in cramped city centers and in between of existing buildings and other structures are facing more and more challenges. Installation of sheet pile walls is often problematic or even impossible due to obstacles in ground from old structures and due to demand to extend the excavations to even deeper and harder soil layers. Also installations of secant pile walls are facing difficulties due to cramped construction sites and constantly tightening execution times.On the other hand, an efficient and reliable piling technique suitable for the demanding soil conditions described above, percussion drilling, has been developed since the 1960’s, and especially from the mid- 1990’s, when the concentric drilling method with the ring bit and pilot was introduced. A new retaining wall application, the RD pile wall, was developed by combining that drilling method with the widely used retaining wall solution based on steel pipe piles and welded interlocks (a pipe pile wall normally installed with vibratory or impact hammers).PRINCIPLE AND MAIN BENEFITS OF THE METHODRD pile walls can be used in all soil conditions. Most beneficial the system is in extremely demanding soil conditions where the installation of traditional retaining walls is challenging or even impossible. The RD pile wall is a combination of drilled steel pipe piles and interlocking sections as shown in Fig. 1.Individual RD piles are connected to each other with interlocks welded to the piles on the automated welding line at the workshop. The matching dimensions of the drilling system and interlocking sections allow the installation of RD piles through stones and boulders and even into the bedrock, if necessary, in a single operation. Installation is done by a down-the-hole (DTH) hammer using the centric drilling system and oversized ring bits or a drilling system consisting of a pilot bit and reamer wings shown in Fig. 2."

Uranium in situ leach mining has recently emerged as a viable alternative to conventional miring techniques. The cost implications of in situ mining are therefore of increasing interest to mining paracticioners as well as public officials. This report presents the results of an assessment of uranium in situ leach mining costs through the application of process engineering and discounted cash flow analysis procedures. A computerized wasting technique, termed a cost model, was developed through this effort to facilitate rapid cost analyses. Application of this cost model will generate mine life capital and operating costs as well as solve for economic production cost/lb. U308. Conversely rate of return may be determined subject to a known selling price. The data bases of the cost made! have been designed to reflect variations in Texas vs. Wyoming site applications. The results If applying the model under numerous ore deposit, operating, wellfield and extraction plant conditions for Texas and Wyoming are summarized in the report. Sensitivity analysis of changes in key project parameters have also been tested and reported.

The Palaeo-Proterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa is host to the largest known resources of high-grade hematite ore on the Southern African continent. These ores are currently being exploited at Sishen and Beeshoek. Hematite occurances on the Sishen South exploration project (some 65 km south of Sishen mine), are at present the focus of an intensive investigation. At both the Sishen and Sishen South deposits, mineralisation is found within lithologies belonging to the Transvaal and Oliphantshoek Supergroups. The Transvaal Supergroup comprises a basal, carbonate platform sequence (the Campbell Rand Subgroup) overlain by thick units of banded iron-formation belonging to the Asbestos Hills Subgroup. The Asbestos Hills Subgroup is unconformably overlain by sedimentary rocks of the Gamagara Subgroup. The latter Subgroup has been correlated with the lowermost unit of the Oliphantshoek Supergroup. The Sishen and Sishen South deposits are located close to the western margin of the Kaapvaal craton and have been subjected to intensive, structural deformation. Both localities have undergone folding, faulting and thrusting. Early regional tectonism (2400 - 1700 Ma) played a critical role in the genesis and preservation of the ores from younger erosive events. At both deposits, four similar iron ore occurrences have been recognised. The ores have developed in specific depositional environments and hence display unique physical, chemical and metallurgical properties:The bulk of the high-grade hematite comprises laminated and massive ores, which are found in the upper parts of the Asbestos Hills Subgroup. The laminated and massive ores are best developed in basinal and pseudo-graben structures. Collapse breccia ores of medium- and lower-grade are preserved within deep palaeosinkholes. The sinkholes have developed within the dolomites of the Campbellrand Subgroup. Lower-grade conglomeratic and gritty ores constitute the remainder of the deposits. These ores are found in the overlying clastic succession of conglomerates, shales and quartzites belonging to the Gamagara Subgroup. Although, there are many stratigraphic and lithological similarities between the Sishen and Sishen South deposits, there are also important differences, which will impact on the profitable exploitation of the ores. The most striking contrast between the deposits is their size and geometry. Sishen mine is a single pit operation with an opencast mineable reserve of 895 Mt. The Sishen orebody is thicker, more continous and significantly larger than the Sishen South deposit. The Sishen South deposit has a potential opencast reserve of 228 Mt. It comprises a number of small and narrow, isolated orebodies, spread over an area of ¦64 km2 . There is a significant difference in grade between the deposits. On average the orebodies of the Sishen South deposit have a higher iron content (+0.25 per cent Fe), less potassium (- 0.090 per cent K2O) and less phosphorus (-0.019 per cent P). The Sishen South deposit has less interbedded shale in the laminated and massive ores. The footwall of these high-grade ores is a light-density, intrusive sill, compared to banded iron-formation at Sishen. With a proposed heavy-medium separation plant at Sishen South, the impact of dilution on product grades is expected to be less than that currently experienced at Sishen.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to determine the slur- ry transport and deposition properties of coal waste. A 188.5-ft pipe test loop was constructed with instruments to measure density, flow, and power and discharge, suction, and differential pressures. A 20-ton sample of Western coal waste was crushed and screened to 100 pct minus 1/2 in. Eight loop tests using this graded waste were run at slurry densities ranging from 1.15 (25 wt-pct solids) to 1.46 (60 wt-pct sol- ids). The resultant friction-pressure gradients ranged from 0.06 to 0.24 ft of water per foot of 4-in standard steel pipe. Particle-size degradation was significant. In a typical loop test lasting 25 min, the minus 200-mesh fraction increased from 19 pct to 34 pct. Deposi- tion tests showed that without the use of a flocculant, the slurries would not dewater when left to stand for 1 week. With flocculant, ad- ditional water was released; however, the settled slurries remained thixotropic. Further testing is necessary to determine their suitabil- ity for use as backfill material in active mines.

Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. This interface effectively assigns a master to each specialist data set employed for decision-making and delivers accurate process parameters to the production team within an optimal time frame, resulting in increased potential to improve beneficiation efficiency.CITATION:Nel, H M, Nassis, T and du Toit, T, 2013. Fully aware of these little historical pitfalls, the authors have tried to quote the origin where possible, and also to seek further confirmation when the statement warranted it, but cannot assume responsibility for certain facts and dates.
