The Bathurst mining district is located near the town of Bathurst on the north shore of the province of New Brunswick in eastern Canada. This region is the northeasterly extension of the Appalachian mountain system. The area is heavily forested and covered with a fairly uniform layer of glacial gravels and boulder clay. The relief is low, increasing to a few hundred feet in the north west and several hundred feet in the extreme southwest. Thus, rock outcrops are scarce and occur mostly along streams and ridges. These factors made conventional prospecting difficult and resulted in the district becoming an excellent place for the application of regional geological studies, air photo techniques, airborne and gound geophysical methods and soil sampling. Late in 1952, The Brunswick Mining and Smelting Company discovered a very large base metal sulphide body presently known as their No. 6 orebody. Early in 1953, another and even larger sulphide body was discovered and is known as the No. 12 ore body. Mining exploration was very active thoughout 1953 and in 1954, The American Metal Company discovered the orebodies which have been developed into The Heath Steele 'Mines. The location of these deposits is shown on figure one. In the latter part of 1954, The Anaconda Company became interested in the district and decided to make a geological study of this new and promising base rrietal area. The following paper presents the story of the application of modern geological and geophysical techniques, leading to the discovery of a large sul-nhidp liodv. The Bathurst district is generally underlain by the Tetagouche group of Middle Ordovician rocks.

Over the last four years, an international initiative, championed by Vehicle Projects LLC, the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute and Natural Resources Canada, has been active in carrying out research projects to prove out the concept of applying fuelcell technology to underground mining vehicles. These have been carried out by a consortium consisting of mining companies, equipment manufacturers, technology developers, national laboratories and consultants, with the participation of Canadian and U.S. mine regulatory agencies. This clean technology, which produces only water and electricity, would allow several advantages to be obtained, in the health area (by eliminating diesel emissions and reducing noise generation), in lowering production costs (such as reducing ventilation required) and lowering green house gas emissions. This article outlines the results obtained in several key areas, such as the operation of fuelcells in underground conditions, risk issues related to underground and surface operation of hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen production and delivery systems, and the design and mining performance of the world?s first hydrogen mining vehicle, a mine production locomotive. The work to date on the fuelcell loader, designing the power plant and power transmission systems, operational requirements, and operating cost reductions, is also presented. There is also an evaluation of the overall mining applications and advantages this technology can bring to underground mining, including the facilitation of automation and tele-remote operation.

"A young private R & D organization, COREM celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2009. Managed by a consortium of nine mining and metallurgical companies, COREM has the mandate of increasing the competitiveness of its member companies through the development and transfer of mineral processing innovations. Typical technologies developed by COREM include alternative mineral processing techniques, novel operating strategies, innovative sensors and process simulation software. Many of them were developed in partnership with universities and selected research organizations.Because the COREM membership base is broad (from ferrous to base, to precious metal industries), its R & D program must deliver technologies with applications within a wide spectrum of mineral processes. Comminution, physical (gravity and magnetic) separation, flotation, cyanidation, pelletizing and thermal processes are the main topics of the R & D program. A number of new technologies have been developed and transferred to the plants of member companies. These examples of transferable technologies demonstrate the capability of COREM to impact the bottom-line of its member companies.INTRODUCTIONCOREM is a private mineral-processing R & D organization that operates from its own laboratories and pilot-plant with its own staff of professionals and technicians (about 95 persons). It is managed and financially supported by a consortium of nine mining and metallurgical companies and three provincial and federal ministries. The very ‘down-to-earth’ mission statement of COREM is to increase the competitiveness of the mineral processing plants of its members. The eighteen plants upon which the COREM technology development program is currently based can be found in Québec, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, the Netherlands and Botswana."

The refractory nature of residual gold in Kalgoorlie calcines is caused by occlusion in dense pyrrhotite formed by fusion within pyrite grains during decomposition. Fusion of pyrite increases as the rate of heating exceeds the rate of sulphur expulsion. By controlling these rates in relation to each other in a fluidised system fusion is limited and an expanded structure is formed. The increased area presented to cyanide solution, and the decreased diffusion distance, makes gold more accessible for extraction. Gold extraction from expanded pyrrhotite, before oxidation for porosity, is comparable with extraction from fully oxidised calcines from Edwards roasters. A method is suggested for standardised comparison of cyanidation residues.

These proceedings consist of papers presented at two Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminars for the purpose of disseminating recent advances in mining technology related to coal mine fire and explosion prevention. Primary, although not exclusive, emphasis is placed on underground coal mining. The papers address research accomplishments ranging from methods for detecting mine fires to remote sealing systems for extinguishing coal mine fires. Each paper represents the current state-of-the-art in the respective research categories. Presentations include research occurring from both Bureau in-house and contract efforts.

A shortage of technical skills in all areas of the mining industry is being experienced worldwide. This has significant consequences for design, operations, productivity and safety and, therefore, needs to be seriously addressed, both in the short and longer term. It is therefore both a strategic and a tactical issue. Importantly, however, since mining is a long-term business, the shortage of skills must be dealt with from a strategic point of view to ensure the supply of the necessary skills for future mining. This paper will deal specifically with the provision of high level technical skills, that is, university graduates in mining engineering, and the outlook for the institutions that are currently producing such graduates.

The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents. Basically, the suggested integration is essential for sampling trace constituents in the environment, in food, in chemicals and in the pharmaceutical industries.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2017. The goal of this program was to produce a set of baseline health and safety training materials that could be used by the metal/nonmetal mining industry to reduce injuries and to comply with federal training requirements. The materials developed are arranged in a two level outline format. The first level provides the title, course goals, background and topical outline while the second level provides a detailed outline of the course content. Visuals, designed to portray miners in a positive, attractive fashion, were done in simple line drawing so they would reproduce for handouts without loss of quality. Each of the required units in the Baseline Guides have one or more self-checks. These are designed to be suggestive of evaluation techniques the users can develop for themselves. An instructors guide and a mining terms glossary are included. In a second phase the program developed performance based training guides for Annual Retraining and Experienced New Hires in the Underground Salt Industry.

Owing to ongoing development of new orebodies and changes to existing mining operations, new ore types with distinct mineralogy, porosity and textures are generated as feed for iron and steelmaking. Moreover, further product differentiation occurs as fine ores are increasingly beneficiated to achieve grade. A study was necessary to characterise a suite of iron ore fines in terms of their propensity for formation of quasi-particles and green bed permeability prior to sintering. In this study, two Marra Mamba bedded iron deposit (BID) samples, one Pisolitic channel iron deposit (CID) samples, two dense hematite samples (coarse and fine grained microplaty hematite), one hematite-goethite BID samples and one hematite-goethite bedded/detrital iron deposit (BID-DID) composite sample were investigated. Both Marra Mamba fines and Pisolitic fines exhibit the highest green bed permeability followed closely by hematite-goethite fines, fine microplaty hematite fines, hematite-goethite BID-DID composite fines and coarse microplaty hematite fines at a moderate sintering bed depth of 500 mm. While porous fines generally form better quasi-particles upon granulation than dense fines, the amount of moisture addition increased due to the moisture saturation of the porous fines. As sinter strands become ever larger and deeper, it was necessary to examine the granulation performance of these ore types at a range of bed depths ranging from 300 to 900 mm. On average, the green bed permeability achieved by different ore types, decreased by approximately 7.5 - 9 Japanese Permeability Unit (JPU) as the bed height was increased from 500 mm to 900 mm. In order mitigate the effect of lower bed permeability of the deeper beds, small additions of hydrated lime were investigated as a binding agent to facilitate the formation of strong micro-pellets. With the addition of three per cent hydrated lime, equivalent to approximately 2.3 per cent burnt lime, the majority of fines achieved adequate permeability for deeper bed sintering, with the exception of coarse microplaty hematite fines. In simulated coastal steelmaking sinter blends, it was found that the overall granulation performance of the blend is contributed to by individual fines constituting the blend. Therefore fines possessing favourable granulating properties impart better granulation to the blend as a whole.CITATION:Ooi, T C and Lu, L, 2013. High resolution seismic refraction tomography has proved to be a useful tool to effectively estimate depth of blast induced damage in a mine face. Excavation blast damage can be as shallow as 1 to 2m and requires resolution at a fraction of a meter for effective imaging. We used an accelerometer with flat frequency response to 1000Hz to record data at spacings of approximately 0.25 to 0.5m along mine walls. First arrival times from the seismic data were used to produce P-wave velocity tomograms. The tomograms show transition from low velocity zones to velocity associated with competent rock. We interpret the low velocity zones to indicate residual fracturing from blasting. Experiments on a concrete test block and at two underground mine locations give results that are consistent with fractured rock transitioning to competent rock. Our method can be applied efficiently in an underground environment to provide continuous velocity information with depth into a mine wall over a span of approximately 10m.

Smelting or converting of sulphide concentrates and mattes in a batch operation presents a challenge when directing the off- gas to a conventional acid plant. The Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (a division of the Vedanta Group of companies) Chanderia Lead Zinc smelter was presented with such a challenge that was met with the adoption of the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System. The Ausmelt top submerged lance technology used at Hindustan Zinc generates a furnace gas stream that containsbetween 0.1 vol% and 12 vol% SO2 during the three stages of batch smelting. Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing Technology captures the SO2 to ensure that treated flue gas exits the facility at a concentration below 100 ppmv SO2 and it releases SO2 in a controlled fashion, to more closely match the needs of the existing acid plant. The application of a regenerable scrubbing system to capture SO2 from a batch-operated furnace and convert it to acid in a conventional acid plant was a first of its kind in the world. This paper provides an update on the design and operation of the Hindustan Zinc SO2 recovery system and suggests two improvements to the basic flow sheet that optimize the cost of SO2 scrubbing further.

In panel caving in underground mines, it is essential to characterise and monitor the stress and stability state of production level pillars to ensure the extraction of the mineralised ore column and the safety of workers. Pilar Norte is a sector in the El Teniente mine that forms a pillar between the undercut fronts of the adjacent Esmeralda and Reservas Norte sectors. It exists in a high-stress environment, which may induce damage to the rock mass production pillars. Generally, numerical models are calibrated using observed damage in galleries. This procedure does not discriminate between the structural condition and/or the blasting damage effects. This paper proposes a technique that uses borehole cameras to measure stress-induced damage. This has the advantage of being at the intact rock scale, meaning that the effect of geological structures is negligible and the blasting damage factor is eliminated. Comprehensive geotechnical characterisation and tomography monitoring has been undertaken at Pilar Norte to describe and determine the rock mass behaviour of the production pillars. By combining analytical, empirical and numerical models, a correlation between the measured overbreak recorded by the borehole cameras and the stress level of the pillar was developed. In September 1985 we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. By Dec. 10, our cutoff date, we had 430 responses, representing about 1.5% of the 28,238 people who received the September issue of ME. In the data that follow the tabulation and percentages are based on the number of individuals who responded to the particular question. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded told us something positive - you look at or read the magazine. Of the 430 respondents, 428 or 99.5% indicated that they had read or looked through the July and/or August issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 207 or 48.5%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 193 or 45.2%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 27 or 6.3%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? Simulation continues to hold the spotlight among the Operations Research applications in the operational side of mining. One reason for this is the need to solve the many waiting line and storage problems common to the industry. A second reason for using simulation is the central requirement of retrospect testing. Acceptance of a model by management is more likely to depend on its tested performance rather than on the underlying validity aspects of the model itself. Mathematics have not been and may not be developed that will allow all desired system elements to be considered simultaneously. It is in this realm that simulation bridges the gap between theory and useful design procedures. One of the earliest published accounts of simulation at work in the coal industry is demonstrated by the application cf Monte Carlo methods to explore changes in future operating policies for an existing track system (Manula, 1963). By modifying certain control parameters, revision in design changes were evaluated in the computer rather than in the actual production section. A second application which has found wide use in practice is the VFI-OCR Face Simulator (Prelaz et al., 1968). The model developed here has the purpose of allowing the comparison of methods for room-and-pillar face operations end observing their effect on mining prior to actual installation. Proposed changes are tried in the model and the best of these are selected as a guide for better mire management: IBM's own simulation package, the System 360 General Purpose Simulator, has experienced heavy use in solving similar problems and other steady-state situations.

Have you ever had a neighbor complain about a blast one day, but says the next day’s blast was better, even though the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) increased? How about neighbors that complain about a small trimming shot, but don’t complain about a big production shot? Have you ever reduced the pounds/delay and gotten more complaints ? Mine operators are often bewildered when trying to correlate blast design parameters to homeowner complaints. When complaints come, standard practice is to set up a seismograph in the neighbor’s yard to monitor the blast. Immediately after the blast, the neighbor usually reappears from the house wanting to know the seismograph reading. When told that the PPV was 0.1 in/set, well below damage levels, the homeowner explodes saying “Your machine is wrong”. Perhaps he is right. Understanding why people complain about blasting is not about PPV, it’s all about structural response. People could care less about how much the ground vibrates; they only care about how much their house vibrates. In this paper we will examine the primary factors that control structural response. Through the use of a large array of digital seismographs, the effects of two production blasts on a community surrounding a quarry are studied. The predicted structural response resulting from each blast is calculated at 175 seismograph locations. The predicted response is then correlated to previous research on human perceptibility to vibrations. The results of this analysis and correlation give a better understanding of what the residents actually feel in their homes. The detonations of two single-hole signature blasts are also recorded by the array of seismographs revealing the dynamic characteristics of the geology ‘surrounding the quarry. Once the influence of the geology was understood, blasts were configured to disrupt the natural rhythm of the site through the use of millisecond delays.

The Palabora open pit is scheduled to cease operations in 2002. While the ore body continues below the bottom of the final pit shell, the stripping ratio precludes further economic open pit mining. Palabora Mining Company has investigated various means of continuing copper production, and has determined that an underground mine is the best solution. Board approval to commence construction of the mine has been granted and shaft sinking is underway. First production is planned for the year 2000 and full production of 30 000 t/d will be achieved by the end of the year 2002. [ ] Mechanised block caving will be the mining method employed at Palabora. The cave will be initiated by excavating a thin horizontal slice known as the undercut. Removal of the undercut will induce stresses which cause the rockmass overhead to fracture. Fractured rock will gravitate through drawbells to drawpoints on the production level, and be loaded by LHDs for transport to crushers.

The electrochemical reduction of AlC13 was investigated as a process for the production of aluminum. An externally heated, single-compartment cell with a rammed refractory lining was used with molten KCl-NaCl-AlC13 electrolyte. Aluminum was deposited qt 700° to 760° C with a current of 100 to 200 amperes on a molten aluminum cathode. Chlorine was evolved at a graphite anode and collected and measured to provide a quantitative evaluation of the AlC13 reduction. Aluminum was removed from the cell by siphoning or ladling. Granular AlC13 was added periodically to replenish that depleted from the electrolyte. Concentrations of 7.5 to 17.5 percent AlC13 in the electrolyte were optimum for operation. Anode current efficiencies of 83 to 85 percent were attained, using anode current densities of 5.9 amperes per square inch and an anode-cathode distance of 4 inches. The chemically bonded, alumina liner was resistant to attack by aluminum and chlorine but susceptible to erosion at the surface of the electrolyte. Titanium diboride proved suitable for the electrical connection to the molten aluminum cathode. Aluminum of a purity equal to or better than 1100 series metal was electrowon continuously from commercial AlC13 for a period of 4-1/2 months.
