This article first explains the mechanism of forming strength in the Jet grouting reinforced foundation, and points out the function of cement hydrates and clay minerals in clayey soil, the reinforced body with the character of long-term growth of strength. Secondly, regarding the strength and the deformation characteristics of compound foundation, the article points out that the stress-strain curve of the jet grouting pile is approximate to hyperbolic curve. Finally, the article cites three examples of application in the construction of the metallurgical industry.

It is with considerable trepidation that I set out to defend "litigation" to Design Professionals (DPs), as a better method of resolving disputes than arbitration, in the light of my personal feeling that an increasing amount of America's productive process is being squandered in litigation. Newer methods of dispute resolution, particularly arbitration, are fashionable, and opponents of these schemes risk being viewed as cynical or self-serving. My quandary is heightened since for some smaller disputes, arbitration seems clearly the better choice. I must concede, for example, that when the cost of dispute resolution--i.e., the cost of the process (such as arbitrators fees, attorneys fees, etc.), plus the cost impact of the non-productivity of involved employees--approximates the amount of the dispute, controlling that cost may be as important as a correct resolution. This principle is particularly true for small disputes arising during the progress of a project; it is probably more cost-effective for all parties to resolve their disputes quickly than permitting the dispute to drag out.

Implementation of the joint Federal-State control program established in 1955 to cope with the mine water problem in the Pennsylvania anthracite region is described in this report. The increasing severity of the water problem in the anthracite mines has necessitated major adjustments as this continuing program has progressed. Since 1941 the Federal Government has recognized the mine water problem as an important factor in the worsening economic condition of the anthracite region by initiating scientific and technologic investigations and establishing the Anthracite Flood-Prevention Section in the Bureau of Mines in 1948. On the basis of comprehensive investigations and studies, the results of which were published in numerous reports and bulletins, the Anthracite Mine Drainage Commission of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania formulated a plan that served as a background for legislative action in 1955, resulting in Public Law 162, 84th Congress (Act of July 15, 1955 (69 Stat. 352; 30 U.S.C. 571-576)), for the Federal Government, and Act No. 82 of the General Assembly, July 7, 1955, for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The report covers 29 mine flood control projects approved and executed in implementing the aforementioned legislative acts. Essential engineering and cost details for each project are given, together with an evaluation of the effect that the installed facilities have on alleviating the mine water problem as it concerns individual mines and the anthracite industry as a whole.

The Galore Creek Mine project is one of the newest major mining projects under development in Canada. The project is located in a very remote area of northwestern British Columbia and is being developed by NovaGold Resources and Teck-Cominco of Vancouver. The mine project comprises one of the largest and highest grade undeveloped porphyry-related gold-silver-copper deposits in North America. In order to access the mine site a new 120 km road is required including a 4.4 km mine access road tunnel. Glaciers with heavy snow pack cover approximately two-thirds of the tunnel alignment with a maximum cover of 1200 m. The size of the access road tunnel is about 50 m2 and has been designed as a large single lane road tunnel to accommodate the transport of large size mining equipment for mine start up and ongoing operations. The rock conditions along the tunnel alignment comprise very strong volcanic rocks. Key services for mining operations will be incorporated into the tunnel comprising diesel and power as well as the concentrate pipe-line. Structural portal canopies and portal houses have been incorporated into the tunnel design due to the risk of rockfalls and avalanches in the portal areas. The mine access road tunnel is a significant and critical-path component to the overall project to provide vehicular access to allow construction of the mine site. In order to meet the expected mine start up date the construction of the tunnel works have commenced prior to any other works at the mine site and will be constructed entirely by helicopter support. The tunnel works commenced in the summer of 2006 with the advanced excavation of the overburden materials at the portals. Tunnel construction from the North portal commenced in the spring of 2007. When completed, the mine access tunnel will be the longest private road tunnel in North America. The key design and constructability issues for the mine access road tunnel project are presented and discussed along with a construction status update as of late 2007.

A demonstration project investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of two management interventions, Management Training and Organization Development, for improving productivity and safety in metal/non-metal mines. The management training intervention was conducted at Texasgulf Company's trona mine, using three nearby trona mines as controls. The Organization Development intervention took place in Hecla Mining Company's Lucky Friday mine, using the highly similar Star Mine as control. The two management interventions seemed about equally effective in reducing accidents and injuries, as well as MSHA citations, and the management intervention at the Texasgulf mine also appeared to have led to substantial improvement in mine productivity.

Due to limited available level ground, Nkomati Nickel Mine cut a weathered rock slope at the base of a mountain spur in order to create a platform for construction of the primary crusher plant and run-of-mine stockpiles. As space is limited around the mining area, ore processing at Nkomati is based on a high reliability of flow of material through the crusher plant, with minimal usage of other and larger designed stockpiles. Evidently, any crusher plant shutdown will render the mine as a whole unproductive and put excessive strain on the medium- to long-term large ore stockpiles, the deposition rates for which are restricted by founding material consolidation requirements. At the onset of the 2012 rainy season, movement was identified on the slope monitoring system and cracks developed on the slope. After a minor failure on the crusher slope an assessment of the slope stability was conducted and a slope management plan recommended, which included deployment of real-time monitoring. An evaluation of the conditions leading to instability was conducted and the likely causes for the failure identified. A full evaluation of the slope monitoring, rainfall, and mining conditions was undertaken and movement triggers were determined. This paper describes the events leading to the development of the failure and the evaluation of the monitoring data to determine a management plan for the failure that allowed for minimal shutdowns of the primary crusher.

"Each and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. Several factors including ore heterogeneity and harsh production environment affect the reproducibility of the reported data. Best practices of metal accounting thus prescribe that production reports be accompanied by measurement quality reports quantifying the reproducibility (a data quality metric often expressed as a relative standard deviation) of each data reported. Ignoring the irreproducibility of measurements may lead to the perception that random errors have been totally eliminated through statistical data reconciliation, which is wrong. This paper aims at explaining the full lifecycle management of reproducibility estimation from the outset at the measurement process to its reporting after having been through the statistical data reconciliation process. Indeed, the reproducibility of reported data can be obtained by performing a sensitivity analysis. Necessary conditions for obtaining a truly representative assessment of measurement reproducibility are stated. Typical levels of measurement reproducibility found in operating flotation plants are also reported. These numbers can be used as benchmarks for reproducibility levels that can be realistically expected.IntroductionEach and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. The duly recurrence of this task combined with an insufficient level of automation has somehow contributed to the misleading perception that it is mainly a clerical work. Acknowledging that the content of production reports indubitably origin from raw measurements has important implications for how both the reports and MAS should be monitored."

In 1992, a detailed inspection of the Southfield Sewer revealed a reach of approximately 0.8 kilometers in length, located directly below the freeway lanes, which was severely distressed. Failure of this section of the sewer would result in the closing of the busiest roadway in the state as well as the potential backup of sewage into homes and spilling into nearby surface waters. As such, repair of the distressed section required development of a procedure that would not jeopardize the conveyance of flow through the existing sewer nor impede travel on the overlying freeway. Based on these constraints, the DWSD and NTH team developed a repair concept that entailed the mining of a new, 3.05-meter (10-foot) diameter bypass away from the traffic lanes. The new bypass section was connected to the existing sewer, up stream and down stream of the distressed area, using a “top down” construction approach, that required only minimal freeway closures during weekend periods. This paper, prepared jointly by the Owner, Consultant and Contractor will describe existing conditions, design considerations and construction methods.

"Twin Metals Minnesota LLC, (TMM) has recently completed a prefeasibility study evaluating the development and operation of an underground copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and gold (Au) mining project on the Maturi deposit in northeastern Minnesota.The Maturi deposit is a magmatic Cu-Ni-sulphide deposit occurring along the basal contact of the South Kawishiwi intrusion, comprised of heterogeneous troctolites to gabbros forming a tabular body designated the BMZ (basal mineralized zone). These rocks provide the major gangue mineralogy (plagioclase, olivine, and clinopyroxene) with local, minor rock-forming orthopyroxene, biotite, magnetite, and ilmenite. Altered silicates exist within local fracture and/or alteration zones, which are commonly associated with minor faults in the regional area. The Maturi deposit is comprised of four main mineralized zones within the BMZ, referred to as Stage 1, Stage 2 (S2), Stage 3 (S3), and Upper Heterogeneous. Chalcopyrite, cubanite, pentlandite, and pyrrhotite are mainly hosted within the S2 and S3 units, with talnakhite frequently occurring within the S3 unit.A cross-discipline approach combining geology, geochemistry, metallurgy, QEMSCAN™ mineralogy, and mine planning has been implemented to develop a preliminary geometallurgical model and life of mine metallurgical performance forecast. This paper provides an overview of the methods that were used to develop the model and forecast, and discusses the advantages of such a model in project development and evaluation.INTRODUCTIONThe TMM Project proposes mining a copper-nickel-palladium-platinum-gold-silver (Cu-Ni-PGM) magmatic sulphide deposit situated in the Duluth Complex of northeastern Minnesota, USA. The prefeasibility study proposes a 45,000 million tonnes per day mine and concentrator facility to produce two saleable concentrates. The mine will access two separate deposits, Maturi and Maturi Southwest. Saleable concentrates are the final products of the sequential flotation plant where a high grade Cu concentrate is produced followed by a Ni concentrate."

Vibratory driver/extractors do more than drive and extract sheet piles. I would say more than sixty percent (60%) of the time, vibratory pile driver/extractors are engaged in work that has nothing to do with sheet piles. This is the main reason I refer to this tool as a "driver/extractor", and omit the word "pile". I have spent the last twenty years applying the technology of the vibratory driver/ extractor to all areas of foundation construction. As you will see, the only limits are humankind's ingenuity.

This report describes the development, design, fabrication and testing of a port-able, battery-operated, light scattering monitor (henceforth to be designated as ILSDM) for the rapid measurement of the concentration of respirable dust in mining environments. This instrument incorporates state-of-the-art design characteristics and makes use of advanced solid-state components both for light emission as well as for its detection. The use of a pulsed light source combined with synchronous signal detection minimizes drift problems and optimizes the sensitivity of the measurement. Simplicity of operation, reliability and ruggedness, light weight as well as improved performance were salient objectives of this instrument development program. Continuous clean-air flow screening of all critical optical surfaces, and optimized optical detection and electronic signal processing design resulted in about a hundred-fold decrease of noise and drift with respect to precursor instruments. Equivalent mass concentration measurements 88 low as 10 micrograms per cubic meter can be routinely performed with time constants of about 2 second.

Mining is a long-term business, and the choices made typically have large investments attached to them, long payback periods, and significant socio-economic consequences. In today’s uncertain world, it is important to make the right choices. The mining industry in South Africa finds itself in a difficult situation. Operating conditions are tough, the socio-political environment is complex, and financial performance is under pressure. The choices made by all the stakeholders in this industry in the short term will shape the future of the industry. This paper characterizes some of the big, difficult decisions faced by the mining industry in the South African context, and discusses how these decisions could be approached in a fact-based and robust way.

The paper point out the testwork has been carried out with real process solutions from the Chambishi cobalt plant in Zambia, showing that the ISEP® continuous ion exchange system can effectively remove nickel from cobalt sulphate electrolyte. Laboratory testing confirmed published data, and was subsequently verified on site at Chambishi in a pilot test program. Based on the testwork data, a commercial unit is being installed at Chambishi.

Distinct-element modelling has been used to study the mechanisms associated with observed deformation of the western face of the quarry. A complex failure mechanism involving distinct planar surfaces that was proposed for a slope failure in 1967 has been modelled and shown to be plausible. In addition, deep-seated flexural toppling may contribute to the slope instability. Modelling has confirmed the detrimental influence of a raised water-table on the stability of the slope and also indicates that the observed cyclic opening and closing of tension cracks may be attributed to seasonal rise and fall of the groundwater level

The objectives of this study were firstly to characterize and quantify the inorganic material in the Secunda gasification feedstock. Secondly, the effect of washing on coal properties and sulphur content was investigated. Coal from a single source and a coal blend from 6 different mines were tested. Composite samples were visually sorted by a geologist in the groups containing roof, floor, C-shale, pyrite, carbonates and siltstone material. Inorganic mineral types from the single source and coal blends were characterized separately. Characterization results indicate that the average mineral matter distribution (mass %) of the coal tested was as follows: carbonates (6%), carbon-shale (19%), pyrite (12%), roof (18%), floor (46%) and siltstone (22%). The roof, floor, pyrite, carbon-shale, carbonates and siltstone in the single source and coal blend have similar chemical properties and characteristics, except for the ash melting temperatures of pyrite and kaolinite in the siltstone. By implementing selective mining and increasing mining management practices, the percentage discard in the run of mine coal can be significantly reduced, by up to 45%, if the mining of roof and floor material can be avoided. No significant impact of mining practices on sulphur content is expected in this case due to the low concentrations of sulphur in the roof and floor material. In summary, selective mining practices will probably result in almost45% decrease in the discard content in the run of mine to gasification, an increase in the carbon content from 55.0% to 58% (air dry basis) and a decrease in sulphur content from 1.1% to 0.9% (air dry basis). It is clear from this study that the main source of sulphur is not in the high ash-content mineral types (e.g. floor and roof), but in situ in the coal structure. The Leeville underground mine has been in operation since 2006 and currently produces 3,500 tons of ore per day with an average gold grade of 0.34 opt. The mine has a large horizontal extent of 2,500 feet by 500 feet and a vertical extent of 20 to 200 feet. Based on the characteristics of the ore bodies, a long-hole stope and cut-and-fill mining methods are used at the deposits which are divided into several mining zones. Cemented rock fill (CRF) is used as the backfill in the open stope. CRF design includes the aggregate design, the ratio of cement and fly ash design, and strengths for the long-hole stope and cut-and-fill. In the aggregate design, the particle size distribution is one of the most influential aggregate characteristics in determining how it will perform as a basic backfill material. Gradation helps determine durability, porosity, cement and water requirements, strength, and shrinkage. To cut the backfill cost, fly ash usually is added into the binder to replace some part of cement. However, adding fly ash can affect the strength of the backfill. The reasonable percentage of fly ash is also important for making a good and low cost backfill. Based on the different mining method, the different backfill with different strength is designed. A systematic quality control procedure for aggregate and backfill is followed. After four yeas application, CRF system in Leeville achieved very good results.

An accurate knowledge of the chemical, mineralogical and physical characteristics of ores and mineral products that are mined, processed and traded is crucial to effective resource utilisation, plant design, process optimisation and finally quality control to ensure that contract specifications are met. However, all too often the responsibility for sampling is entrusted to managers and personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of collecting representative samples for analysis, and everyone seems satisfied as long as some material is collected and returned to the laboratory for analysis. Furthermore, sample stations incorporated into the design of new plants are often the first casualties when cost cutting exercises commence. This needs to change, because there is little point in accurately analysing samples if they are not representative in the first place. The resultant analyses can be next to meaningless and the effort taken to analyse such samples is to a large extent a waste of time and resources.Ultimately, a poor knowledge of the characteristics of ores and mineral products limits the ability of mining companies to optimise the life of ore resources and plant performance, and failure to meet final product specifications can have disastrous consequences, including price penalties and more seriously loss of sales contracts. "The Strathcona Concentrator operations, the application of control systems in the crushing, flotation and tailing fill sections, and current and future computer control concepts are described in this paper.The computer has been used for reporting and monitoring roles and operating the on-stream analyzer since start up of the mill in 1968, while over the past twenty months, it has been used for process control. The systems which have been developed include:1. The blending of pentlandite concentrate with pyrrhotite concentrate to produce a special product of constant nickel analysis.2. The blending of cement with tailing fill to produce backfill of consistent cement content.3. The supervisory control of xanthate, frother and pH to the flotation circuits to maintain the nickel copper concentrate grade within narrow limits.IntroductionThe Strathcona Concentrator is currently treating 7,200 tons per day of an ore which contains nickel associated with the minerals pentlandite (28 -32% Ni) and pyrrhotite (0.3 -1.0% Ni). The ratio of the nickel minerals varies from 4 to 15 parts of pyrrhotite to 1 part of pentlandite over the orebody. The production of a high grade concentrate re4uires the separation of this small quantity of .oentlandite from the much greater proportion of pyrrhotite and gangue and is complicated by the presence of two pyrrhotite minerals differing in nickel content, floatability and magnetic susceptibility."

"In February, 1975, the President of Georgia Iron Works Company, Mr. Tom Hagler decided to build a new hydraulic laboratory to water performance test all of the companies' centrifugal slurry pumps.Equipment procurement started in March, 1975, by ordering of a mini computer data acquisition system.Work commenced on the lab in July, 1976, by erection of a Butler Building and the laying down of a 20,000 gallon concrete sump.By late October, a facility compromising two water test loops of 8"" and 18"" pipe diameter was in operation carrying out head quantity and suction performance tests on pumps up to 16"" in size.In August of the following year, an 8"" diameter pipe slurry loop was installed to enable pipe friction and deposition velocity of a slurry to be measured in an 8"" inside diameter pipe.With the encouragement of Reserve Mining in Minnesota and IMCC in Florida, this was followed in March, 1978, by the addition of over 300 feet of 18"" diameter pipe to make up an 18"" diameter pipe slurry system complete with head loss and deposition velocity observation sections.The office and shop areas of the lab were again expanded in April, 1978, to provide further expansion to the test sections and staff facilities."

Copper and nickel sulfides occurring in the Duluth Complex of northern Minnesota were examined at the Bureau of Mines, A microscopic study was undertaken to determine the mineralogy and paragenesis of the ore minerals. Eighty-two samples were taken from one deep diamond drill core located near Babbitt, Minn. Modal analyses are presented for the Duluth Complex rocks and for the are minerals in the major mineralized zone. The major sulfide minerals are chalcopyrite, cubanite, pyrrhotite, troilite, and pentlandite. Results of this investigation suggest that the mineralization is related to the structural features of the enclosing rocks: pores, open fractures, and cavities. The pyrrhotite-troilite-pentlandite assemblage is believed to have formed from an immiscible sulfide melt, probably associated with the troctolitic rocks. Most of it settled to the very porous base of the Duluth Complex, and to the other porous zones near xenoliths; small portions were trapped higher in the section. A later introduction of a copper-rich sulfide melt replaced some of the pyrrhotite-troilite and oxides, and filled in the remaining open spaces and fractures in the Duluth Complex and those of the adjacent footwall rock.
