In order to optimize carbon injection into oxidizing slags, in terms of carbon and iron yield, we must have a detailed understanding of the kinetics of the reactions involved. The current study measures the rate of carbon oxidation during injection at steelmaking temperature by means of injections of coal into EAF slags. The compositions of analysed outgoing gas were used to calculate gas flow rate and hence the gasification rate of carbon. A fundamental equation to predict residual carbon in slags was developed. The predictions using this model at moderate injection rates are in good agreement with experimental data. The reaction rate of EAF slag with carbon is under mixed control by the slag gas and the gas carbon reactions. The relative importance of each step depends mainly on the v-ratio of slags. A relative reactivity parameter ? has been defined and it is found to be important to carbon-slag reaction kinetics and slag foaming. Key words: carbon-slag reaction, kinetics, slag foaming.

This report describes the initial feasibility, the development and the field demonstration of a system for shaft sinking employing a high energy mechanical impact rock breaker and a compatible muck disposal system. The increased shaft sinking rates, decreased costs and improved safety conditions obtainable by the elimination of the less efficient conventional drill-blast-muck cycles are discussed. Four shaft sinking concepts utilizing the impact rock breaker in various shaft configurations are developed and the field demonstration in a rectangular shaft is described. The progress achieved, the problems and their remedies and the proposed modifications to improve the machine are described.

Established metallurgical plants operate in a complex environment of interdependent drivers including technology change, operating and maintenance practice, evolving markets, HSEC requirements, statutory and plant requirements, personnel turnover, ore supply, and financial conditions, to name a few. A successful optimisation program should comprehend these factors and drive towards not only lower operating costs, but also higher rates of return for a given level of investment. Optimisation programs have the potential for very high rates of return on capital that Greenfield projects rarely have. This paper presents a robust strategy and methodology for plant optimisation initiatives as well as a case study of how it was implemented at the QNI Yabulu refinery in Queensland, Australia by an integrated team of researchers, engineers and operators. The methodology is premised on the fact that nobody knows the production asset as well as the current operating team. It covers the optimisation process from ideas generation, various stages of selection against the agreed criteria, development, including testwork, funding approval and implementation. It highlights the benefits in the use of integrated teams, the establishment of a sound project basis, and a diligent, phased approach.

The rapid evolution of computer and field sensor technology is now providing the ability to integrate mine and office operations. Digital maps and mine plans as well as CAD and GIS can be transferred to ruggedized field computers for development of real-time mine surveys and real-time GPS machine navigation and monitoring. Surveyors can insure that their surveys are accurate before returning to the office. Engineers and surveyors are also able to upload field computer-based surveys to mine planning software and directly to mine equipment including shovels, drills, and dozers providing the operator of the equipment with a real-time view of their work space. Production information can be transmitted through dispatch and/or centralized mine servers to update mine plans with mining progress and production data. Static mine models then become a dynamic element of operations, providing greater use of information that emphasizes the spatial aspects of the mine by providing real-time maps, productivity charts, and graphs. This information can be disseminated through various mine communication systems to provide operators and management with real-time feedback as well as daily and weekly reports. Integrated systems now being used in extensive trials are reporting productivity increases of 4 -7% or more thereby providing rapid payback to the mine.

The economic interest of oceanic ferromanganese crusts and nodules is determined by high grades of major, rare and earth rare elements in these types of marine minerals [1]. Modern oceanic ferromanganese deposits have a global distribution with the largest fields in the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic Ocean still remains a poorly explored region. The first ferromanganese deposits from the deep part of the Arctic Ocean were recovered almost at the same time in 2012 both in US and Russian cruises to the Chukchi Borderland (1) and Mendeleev Ridge (2). Preliminary results of mineral deposits from the first area were reported at UMI-2012 by James Hein et al. [2]. We present here the data of ferromanganese deposits from the Mendeleev Ridge.

The deposits were formed from low-temperature alteration of pyroclastic rocks. Properties investigated include their cation exchange capacity, swelling capacity, pH, rheological properties, the green and dry compressive strengths, shatter index, wet tensile strength, compactability and permeability. It was found that deposits with abundant opal-CT have poor physical properties. The rheological and swelling properties were found to be influenced by the bentonite grade (smectite content) and the degree of disaggregation of the smectite quasi-crystals. The only deposits of high grade which had good foundry properties were those with no opal-CT. Hydrothermal alteration was detrimental to the physical and chemical properties of bentonites in that it decreased the smectite content and the pH and changed the smectite layer charge and the lattice dimensions

"In the adaptation of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) to hard-rock mining applications, circuit development has mainly focused on placing HPGRs in the role of tertiary crusher in the preparation of ball mill feed. In order to take advantage of the potential energy benefits associated with HPGR and stirred mill grinding technologies, work was done to investigate the potential of and resultant energy benefits of placing the HPGR in series with a high speed stirred mill in replacement of the conventional cone crusher / ball mill arrangement. The proposed circuit was designed to operate with two stages of HPGR grinding followed by high speed stirred milling.Using a pilot-scale HPGR unit inline with a 20 liter stirred mill, the design criteria, circuit arrangement and consequent comminution energy requirements for a circuit processing copper sulphide ore from Teck Resources’s Mesaba Copper project were determined. These results were then compared to two other circuits, an HPGR / ball mill circuit and a conventional crusher / ball mill circuit processing the same ore.The testwork indicated at a proof-of-concept level that the HPGR / stirred mill circuit could potentially be appropriate for this duty and further work on the concept is merited. While the results indicate that the HPGR component of the circuit was more energy efficient than conventional cone crushing, the energy efficiency of the stirred mill was found to be lower than that of a comparable ball mill undertaking the same duty. However, increased energy efficiency of the stirred mill portion of the circuit is possible with further optimization and further work on the concept is indicated."

Accurate evaluation of stress and geological conditions is critical to ground control design in underground openings. For a slope entry, the problem is more difficult because a slope will transverse through many different types of strata. Over the past three years, Keystone Mining Services, LLC, an affiliate company of Jennmar Corporation, has developed a new methodology designated the ?Stress, Geologic, and Support Design System (SGSsm)?. This patent pending method analyzes the stress, geology, and support design for a mine slope. It has been successfully applied in various new slopes across the United States. This paper will detail the main concepts of the methodology including: (1) Analysis of stress and geology and identification of strong, fair and weak zones along the slope; (2) Primary and supplemental support design; (3) Long term support design in the form of steel square sets or arches, and (4) Validation of the support design utilizing advanced finite element computer modeling.

Much new data on the flow of gases have been discovered by recent experiments by the United States Bureau of Mines and others. Although additional investigation is still desirable, the information now collected seems sufficient to attempt a tentative coördination of the friction factors. This study is confined entirely to fluid friction when the density throughout the duct is so nearly constant that it may be so considered. It has been noted in recent years that the pillars in some bord-and-pillar workings scale or spall. In due course this process may result in the collapse of the affected panels. This paper presents a methodology for assessing the long-term behaviour of such workings, employing a simple model of pillar deterioration by scaling. It is assumed that scaling causes a gradual reduction in pillar width, hence the safety factor of pillars reduces in time. It is also postulated that the process of scaling will be arrested if the coal rubble around the pillar reaches a critical height. The probability that the pillars will survive for a certain period of time, or indefinitely, can be estimated. This can be accomplished by using the log-normal distribution proposed by Salamon and Munro4todescribe the distribution of the apparent safety factor values at failure. If an estimate of the rate of scaling is known, it is also possible to quantify, using a Monte Carlo technique, the expected life of the pillars. The method also facilitates pillar design by specifying a probability of survival for a given number of years or, alternatively, for an indefinite period. Using the limited pool of available data, analyses show that the proposed model does not appear to be inconsistent with observed behaviour of pillars in the Vaal Basin. The crucial parameter is the rate of scaling. Back calculations from eleven cases suggest that the rate of spalling in the Vaal Basin is about 0.2 m/year. It is noteworthy that two further cases in the same area give significantly higher rates (0.85 m/year). Some underground observations in the Witbank area indicate considerably lower rates in the order of 0.02?0.04 m/year. Further areas for study are recommended. These include a study of old workings to determine the extent and rate of scaling in the various coal fields, an investigation into the possible relationship between scaling and the chemical composition of the coal. In addition, model studies will be required to assess the practical impact of the research findings.

The ore milled from the Lead Lode of The Zinc Corporation leases consists of a fairly granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, mangan-hedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, mangal1o-calcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite, and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only. Other metallic and gangue minerals are also present in this complex mineralogical association, but do not influence the milling operations. Fortunately, the silver minerals favour the galena and chalcopyrite as their host minerals, thus facilitating the recovery of both copper and silver in the lead concentrate. The ore from the Lead Lode assays from 14-18% lead; 3·0-4·5 oz. silver per ton, and 9·5-12·0% zinc.A parallel lode, known as the Zinc Lode, is well developed in The Zinc Corporation leases. This lode assays from 6-8% lead, 1·5 oz. silver per ton, 18-25% zinc with a siliceous gangue. The common Lead Lode gangue minerals-ealcite, rhodonite, bustamite-are very rare in present underground exposures. No metallurgical work was done on this ore during the pilot plant operations.The aim in the milling process is to produce: 1. A lead concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of lead, silver, gold, copper and antimony, and minimum zinc content.2. A zinc conc,entrate with the maximum economic recovery of zinc, cadmium, and cobalt, and minimum iron, arsenic and fluorine content.3. A waste residue containing sufficient granular material to be utilized as underground fill.In considering the economics of the milling practice the above three requirements plus consideration of the tariffs submitted by the purchasers of concentrates were the deciding factors in the evolution of the present milling practice.Towards the end of 1924 The Zinc Corporation Limited added to and adapted the old zinc tailings plant for the treatment of 5,000 tons of crude ore per week. This plant, which operated until January, 1936, was in general principles similar to the standard Broken Hill methods of ore concentration, whereby the galena was recovered by the gravity concentration methods of Hgging and tabling with selective flotation concentration of the residual galena and marmatite. One important difference from other Broken Hill plants was that the primary grinding of the jig tailing was performed with flint-loaded mills operating in closed circuit with revolving screens. Ore at the Congress gold property, located near Goldbridge, British Columbia, is extremely refractory with most of the gold disseminated in fine-grained arsenopyrite. Metallurgical testwork conducted by Giant Bay Biotech Inc. indicated that biooxidation pretreatment was capable of increasing cyanide gold recovery from the ore to greater than 90%. To determine if the bioleach process could be successfully scaled up, a 225m' (7950-cu ft) commercial size bioleach reactor was built and tested at the mine site in 1989. At that time, the tank was the largest bioleach reactor ever operated. The objectives of the program were: • to ascertain if the biooxidation rates obtained in lab and pilot-scale reactors could be duplicated in a commercial scale tank; • to identify agitation conditions under which the process will function optimally; and • to demonstrate the bioleach process on a scale sufficient to satisfy the owners and potential investors.

Soft laminated iron ore (SLO) having a higher hematite content and Martite goethite iron ore (MGO) having a higher goethite content were subjected to detailed characterization and beneficiation. The present research was designed to investigate if these abundant, low-grade ores can be enriched adequately using standard industry techniques. No significant enrichment of the ores using jigging operation on the coarse (-3,200 +595 mm) size fraction could be achieved. Good liberation was only attained in the 150 to 300 mm particle size range in both cases. Desliming enriches the ground ores significantly. The effect of the feed size on the separation efficiencies of the ground ores were studied using flowing-film concentration on a Wilfley table. Better enrichment is obtained in the case of 150-mm sized feed by tabling. The grade of SLO is improved from 56.14% to 66.51% Fe, while the Fe content of MGO is enriched from 55.16% to 65.83%. Substantial rejection of alumina and silica is also achieved. Due to the friable nature of MGO and the higher goethite content in it, the loss of Fe in the form of ultrafines is greater in this case compared to that of SLO.

Portland, Oregon’s $370 million West Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project has completed the final phase of construction and commissioning. The construction contract, which began in September 2002, was a reimbursable cost plus fixed fee contract that followed a qualifications-based contractor procurement process and apre-construction planning phase. This paper addresses the final results of the contracting method and provides a lessons-learned case history. Specific items addressed include the benefits realized from the contracting method, areas of improvement, final costs compared to the original contract estimates, design changes and schedule impacts, and subcontract management issues.

Optimized mixer settler designs will now handle total flows of over 6,000 m3/hr.Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a timely and predictable tool for design development. Lightnin has the capability of using numerical analysis methodology to evaluate flow patterns and phase separation. CFD can show performance differences between changes, in mix tanks, in settler geometry, and in liquid depth, against variable flow rates. Understanding the differences allows the development of optimized designs. This paper focuses on the major design components of the mixer settler and how technological advances will lead to further improvements, when designing for today’s largest flow plants.

An economic, real-time probe drill monitoring system was developed for Metropolitan Water District’s Arrowhead Tunnels project to quantitatively evaluate ground conditions ahead of a TBM. This system digitally records hydraulic feed, rotation, and percussion pressures and calculates drill advance rates during drilling. These data are computer synthesized to develop a digital representation of the ground ahead, and the resulting “picture” of the ground is distributed to the project team to assist with tunnel construction decisions (i.e., targeting grout holes, optimizing mine-cycle lengths, and avoiding becoming stuck). The analysis and interpretation procedure has now been calibrated and refined using over 5,000 m (3 miles) of geologic face mapping data.

Gypsum and gypsite, used in the manufacture of plaster and plaster products, have been mined from deposits near Acme, Hardeman County, Tex., for more than 30 years. The Certain-toed Products Corp., 120 East Lancaster St., Ardmore, Pa., operates the Acme, Tex., mine. Underground hauling was done with storage-battery and Diesel-electric-powered shuttle cars. Many mining companies and individuals have manifested interest in all types of equipment powered by Diesel or Diesel-electric units, as attested by the recent increase in use of Diesel-powered equipment in underground metal and nonmetal mines. The purpose of this paper is to describe the manner in which a storage battery-powered Joy Model 60D2 shuttle car was converted to Diesel-electric power. The conversion was made, at the instance of the operating company, by Stewart & Stevens on Services, 4801 Lemon Ave., Dallas, Tex. This is believed to be the only such converted shuttle car in use.
