In the operation of the coal mines in Utah few adverse conditions confront us. Physical conditions for the economical extraction of the coal are as near perfect as it is possible for them to be. Still several obstacles are encountered to keep up our interest and prevent us from getting in a rut. Of these I shall speak only of Burning, Wants, and Sluffing of Ribs. Should one travel the outcrop from Ivy Creek in Emery county to the Utah-Colorado line, there would be one outstanding feature indelible impressed upon one's mind. That feature is the omnipresent indications of burning in place. Viewing the eastern escarpment of the Wasatch Plateau from a distance, many splotches of dark red are plainly seen always lying above the coal floor. This stratum is a felspathic sandstone, appearing as a white line running the full length of the above escarpment and about midway between the floor of the valley and the top of the plateau. The coal bearing complex consists of shales, sandstones and coal. This complex varies from two hundred to eleven hundred feet in thickness. The number of coal seams are exceedingly variable. As a rule the argilutites form the bulk of this complex. This material is baked by the burning of the coal and the iron present is oxidized to the ferric state, coloring the shale to a dark red. This baked material forms a shingle tales that in places cover the entire complex. It is natural to expect that the most extensive burning is in the canyons facing to the south and east and on the south slopes of the ridges running to the east or west. Such, indeed, is the case. Still in this arid region many crop fires have existed upon the north slopes, especially in those canyons that face to the east. In fact today, instances are not rare where grassy north slopes, heavily timbered with balsam and fir that have attained a diameter of 14 to 24 inches, are found growing upon the disintegrated baked shingle and later development proves that the coal has been burned at least 500 feet back from the outcrop. Still these conditions are not normal. In this arid climate the south and east exposures are steep and barren, except for the scrub pine, cedar, mahogany and kindred semixerophytes. Bunch grass is also a lover of such exposures. There is very little soil found in such places; it is either blown away as fast as formed or washed away by the rare torrential rains, or the rapidly melting snow. Thus we see that the physical conditions are favorable for the starting and maintainence of outcrop fires. This brings us to the probable origin of this phenomenon. The Brattice Window Method was used to measure the leakage rates of a total of 42 ventilation stoppings in 8 hardrock mines. Various types of stopping construction were evaluated. The following types are listed in order of decreasing effectiveness: 1) Cinder block, 2) Timber and mortar, 3) Timber and polyurethane foam, and 4) Timber and brattice material. There are slight differences in the effectiveness of the first three types, while the timber and brattice type is substantially inferior to the others. The repeatability of the Brattice Window Method was found to vary with physical conditions in the mine such as stopping location with respect to intersections, regularity of drift cross section, and the presence of hardware such as air and water pipes, timber sets and wire mesh. The Brattice Window Method is viewed primarily as a tool for estimating and comparing stopping leakages for the purpose of determining where repair efforts should be concentrated. A laboratory test program resulted in the derivation of several "rules of thumb" for employing the Brattice Window Method, which will aid in securing accurate and repeatable data.

Although the occurrence of deposits of titanium minerals on Kenya’s present day beaches and adjacent dune systems has been well documented, the potential for older formations to host economically viable deposits had not been recognised until recently. The Magarini sands formation in Kenya has been found to contain deposits of ilmenite, rutile and zircon in quantities and grades that have the potential to be commercially exploited. Since 1995, Tiomin Resources Inc. has explored these deposits and has identified one deposit, the Kwale project, as being able to support the development of a mine producing some 300,000 tpa ilmenite, 75,000 tpa rutile and 37,000 tpa zircon. Tiomin plans to start production by late 2002. Construction of a US$137 million operation is set to commence in the first half of 2001.

A cone penetrometer has been used to assess the level of stress existing in hydraulically placed mine backill. The test apparatus was fabricated at the mine and consisted of a steel cone, connector rods and a hydraulic jack. Testing was carried out from a manway passing through the centre of the stope. The cone was pushed horizontally into the fill, both at right angles and parallel to the orientation of the stope walls, and the resistance to penetration was measured. Corrections were made to allow for friction along the rods. In a cohesionless sand, such as mine fill, the point resistance should be directly related to the in situ stress. The stresses in mine backfill are due to o the self weight of the fill o convergence of the footwall and hangingwall of the stope. Silo theory was used to estimate that component of the in situ stress due to the self weight of the fill. The difference between the stress predicted by silo theory and the stress estimated from the cone resistance was assumed to be due to convergence of the stope walls.

This work has as its objective to characterize ceramic bodies for vitrified tiles elaborated with the mixture of nepheline-syenite flux and kaolinitic clay. Formulations were prepared with 0, 30 and 50 wt.% of nepheline-syenite incorporated in a kaolinitic clay. To determine the physical and mechanical properties such as dry bulk density, linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength, specimens were prepared by 30 MPa uniaxial pressure-molding and then fired in a laboratory furnace at 1150oC. The microstructure of the fired ceramics was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the nepheline-syenite improved the evaluated properties of the clay and attended the specifications of vitrified ceramic tiles.

Introduction The impact of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, or Superfund, as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and their state counterparts underscore the intention of the nation's lawmakers to reduce the risk from hazardous substance to American society. The promises and requirements embodied in these laws, together with their prospects for liability, will continue to have a very substantial impact on decision making in the mining industry. These laws present the prospects for staggering liabilities, often of an unquantifiable nature in terms of time and amount. It is therefore necessary to keep them in clear focus. This is particularly true in light of President Reagan's signing into law the Superfund amendments on Oct. 17, 1986, and in light of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) major policy pronouncement of July 3, 1986, regarding solid wastes from extraction of ores and minerals. This article examines the general trends as well as the specific provisions of these laws in an effort to assess the prospects of liability for the mining industry of releases of hazardous substances into the environment. Hazardous substances vs. hazardous wastes The distinction between the terms "hazardous substances" and "hazardous wastes" is important to appreciate for the purposes of assessing the potential for liability for a mining operation. Hazardous substance is a term that appears in and is defined in the Superfund Act. In Superfund, it is defined by reference to other substances that have been declared to be hazardous under other federal environmental statutes, such as RCRA, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act. Hazardous waste is a term that is less all-encompassing than hazardous substance, as that term is defined by RCRA. Hazardous substances do not need to be wastes to be considered hazardous for the purpose of Superfund liability. A "release" of a hazardous substance into the environment can bring about potential liability under Superfund. Many mining wastes, even though they are not considered hazardous wastes by EPA under RCRA, have been determined by that agency to be capable of bringing about liability under Superfund if they contain chemical substances, such as the heavy metals copper, lead, mercury, zinc, silver, and others. Therefore, it is not sufficient for the mining industry to be able to answer whether one has hazardous waste at a mining site. That question only goes partway in addressing the potential for liability. The next question is, do one's solid or liquid mining wastes contain hazardous substances that could bring about liability under Superfund? Superfund 1980 law: A review Some provisions of Superfund as it existed before its recent amendments must be considered. The law provides that the owners and operators of mining sites, together with those who transport hazardous substances to such sites, can be held jointly and severally liable for the cost of cleaning up the site. The concept of joint and several liability means that one party, as among many, can be held totally responsible for the costs of cleanup. Recent events demonstrate that civil and government facilities and structures face an ever-increasing need to be designed for protection against malevolent explosions. Modification of existing public structures and especially design of new ones increasingly includes provisions for explosive protection. ISEE members endorse and promote responsible application of explosives to benefit mankind and deplore any other use. However, our knowledge of explosive behavior and our ability to predict the results of explosive events puts us in a unique position to give guidance to designers of civil and public structures. Recent advances in computational methods have resulted in new computer codes with ALE (arbitrary lagrangian eulerian) simulation capabilities. Historically, lagrangian computational methods have been used for modeling solids because the mesh or discretization moves with the material. Rock breakage resulting from explosively induced shock-waves has been successfully modeled with lagrangian codes. Explosive detonation has traditionally been modeled with eulerian techniques. Eulerian methods have been used to model gases and fluids, tracking the material as it moves through the computational grid. ALE computational technology couples the two methods together in a manner never before possible. An ALE simulation can accurately treat the explosive detonation, interaction of explosive gases with air, and the impact of explosive event on nearby solid structures. ALEGRA (Budge et al. 1997 a & b) is an ALE code developed at Sandia National Laboratories. ALEGRA simulations accurately predict the explosively induced impulse on the structure to be protected. It has been applied to the analysis and design of blastwalls to protect structures and people from explosive events. The impulse calculated can be used by structural engineers to design a blastwall. ALEGRA has also been applied to predict the effect of a blastwall on explosion overpressure some distance behind the blastwall to assess the effect on people present during the event.

Asimismo, este no requiere de un pretratamiento condicional, no afecta la recuperación del zinc, mejora el grado del concentrado y la concentración de iones cromatos después del tratamiento está por debajo del límite permisible establecido por el Reglamento de la Ley General de Aguas.

The origins of mine closure practice have influenced the way in which it is implemented by companies and regulators. Mine closure practices essentially started developing in the 1970s in countries with advanced economies and mature mining industries. In these settings, the emphasis was justifiably placed on restoration of the landscape and an attempt was made to return to the ?natural? pre-mining land cover. These practices continued to evolve and incorporated socio-economic and cultural aspects, especially after the Brundtland Report in 1987 and the subsequent Earth Summit in 1992. Today mining is increasingly occurring in remote parts of developing countries where there may be significant need for infrastructure such as roads, clinics, and schools. The costs of returning land to low (economic) value pre-mining use may be far greater than establishing a viable postmining land use that could potentially add value to the community and take pressure off sites for greenfield development elsewhere. Furthermore, natural resource limitations (such as topsoil availability) may limit the degree to which the historical land cover can be re-established. Establishing post-mining land uses may aid in mitigating the loss of employment that is inevitable when mines close. Stakeholder participation in establishing post-mining land cover and land use options is critical for long-term success. Similarly, third parties must be identified to support the development of the post-mining land use This paper draws on the experience of the authors in several developing countries and presents a case for maximizing re-use of mining infrastructure. The paper does not advocate the adoption of poor rehabilitation standards, nor or the wholesale destruction of land capability, but rather leaving key infrastructure in place for post-mining use that may support sustainable development.

During the past 30 years, the research arena has changed significantly in all fields, mining included. The relative representation of the topics of research, how the research is performed and who has performed the research have all changed. Although there are a lot of subjective ideas and anecdotal "analyses" concerning these changes, there has been no actual study of these trends to verify the facts. This study was divided into six five-¬year periods for the purposes of comparison. Some of the trends analyzed are co-authorship, research areas, research sponsors and cooperative efforts. In today's research arena, 30 years is a long time. Technology has advanced more rapidly than in any time previously and that pace continues to increase. There are more researchers, more tools for research and an increasing number of companies, agencies and institutions engaged in research. The pace of change and its impact is often discussed and debated at professional meetings and in institutions that engage in research. These conversations will often influence the research decisions of the participants in directions to take or subjects to pursue.

Since 1974, a large amount of data has been developed concerning the physical properties and stability characteristics of waste generated by the mining and preparation of bituminous coal. However, very little information has been developed on the properties and characteristics of anthracite waste. During this Bureau of Mines research project, coarse anthracite breaker refuse from five sites in eastern Pennsylvania was sampled and the physical properties, which indicate stability characteristics, were determined in the laboratory. Coarse anthracite breaker refuse is quite similar to coarse bituminous refuse in chemical and mineralogical composition. However, the physical properties of the anthracite waste materials tested are different from those of coarse bituminous refuse. For the coarse anthracite breaker refuse tested, the average maximum laboratory density is 113.2 lb/ft3, the average angle of internal friction (direct shear) and average cohesion are 30.2° and 2.6 psi, respectively, and the average permeability (four sites) is 1.24 x 10-2 cm/sec. Stability analyses were conducted on six theoretical anthracite waste embankments. These analyses show the effects on minimum safety factors of geometry, phreatic surface level, and physical properties.

The main role of slag in oxygen converter processes is to absorb the non-volatile oxidation products of hot metal impurities, Si, P, Mn, Ti, V, etc. The importance of converter slag as deP and de Smedia has ceased with implementation of special pre- and post-converter treatments. The transfer from top blowing (LD) to combined blowing converters has decreased the amount of slagged iron that, together with the tendency towards lower silicon and manganese contents, has decreased slag to steel ratio. Still the control of slag forming and behaviour during the blow is of great importance. In this paper the thermodynamics of the slag forming reactions, the role of slag in the modern oxygen converter process for impurity elimination, splashing, lining wear, dust formation and post combustion are discussed on the basis of common knowledge and experience of Finnish steel plants.

Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993 (original title: Rock engineering system performance monitoring using neural networks.) Synthetic and analytical approaches to objective-based design of rock engineering projects are discussed. Rock masses are considered as complex dynamic systems with components that concurrently interact with each other and their environment. The existence of a rock engineering system canon (i.e. a set of systems governing rules) is proposed. Its possible components are highlighted and an application is demonstrated using a "rock mass automaton" designed to simulate dynamic heat distribution in rock. In the example given, the canon implements the basic result from probability theory applied to the thermodynamics of solids. Rock engineering system performance is reduced to the mapping of the output of a rockmass to varying input (design) options, within the state space of the systems model. The Kohonen Self-Organising Map provides an extremely useful analytical tool to reduce the hyper-dimensionality of rock engineering system behaviour. Further, the hyper-dimensional state vector is mapped "quasiconformally" such that the neural map tends to spatially organise similar input state vectors, facilitating interpretation of rock engineering system behaviour (performance monitoring). Work is reported on the development and validation of the automation as a basis for an internal representation of the rock mass bahaviour. The results are reported of simulations compensating for the uncertainty of the exact mechanisms operating within the rock mass, using additive noise with the input state vector in the training stages of the self-organising map implementation. Initial work on adopting Grossberg's Adaptive Resonance Theory neural network architecture for classification of rock engineering systems behaviour is also presented
