Ever since the use of the cone penetration test (CPT) in geotechnical practice, attempts have been made to correlate CPT parameters with pile capacity components of unit end bearing (qb) and unit shaft resistance (fp), thus deriving multiple CPT-based pile design methods. These methods focus on "capacity" only without consideration to complete axial pile load-displacement (Q-w) response. Estimated capacities from these methods also exhibit considerable scatter without any consensus on their consistency. In addition, load-displacement curves obtained from axial load tests on highly expensive and extensively instrumented piles can exhibit different shapes. Nevertheless, a single value from the curve so obtained dictates the design capacity. Currently, there are at least 42 different criteria defining capacity with considerable variation in the values obtained thereof. The Randolph elastic solution, which provides a framework for analytical evaluation of pile load-displacement response, requires the profiles of soil stiffness. The fundamental soil stiffness defined by the small-strain shear modulus (Gmax) can be obtained from shear wave velocity (Vs) readings via seismic piezocone tests (SCPTu). The secant stiffness (G), which softens from Gmax corresponding to operational load levels, can be obtained by generating stiffness reduction curves from back analysis of load tests. Then, using appropriate G values, the Q-w curve can be defined for conditions similar to the database from the pseudo strain (w/d). Thus, a complete framework for optimal integration of SCPTu data, Randolph elastic solution and back-analysis of field operational stiffness can be established for complete axial pile foundation analysis.

MINE models have three distinct uses: 1. As exhibits in expositions and museums. 2. As exhibits in law suits. 3. As illustrations in teaching mining engineering. All three uses are in a sense educational. The third, or distinctively teaching function, has not been extensively developed in America as it has been abroad, chiefly because of the cost of the models and the scarcity of model makers. In connection with expositions, such as the Columbian, the Louisiana Purchase, and the Panama-Pacific, a number of very good mine and metallurgical models were prepared with funds furnished by State commissions, by mining organizations or mining companies. At the close of these, expositions, some of these models have been deposited in National or State museums or in educational institutions, but too many of them have been lost, or have been stored, away in some mining company's office or in the basement of some State building, where they have been lost sight of and have gradually fallen to pieces. A visitor to a German mining school is impressed by two facts: 1. The mining laboratories are in general inferior to those in America. 2. The mining museums are infinitely superior -to ours, particularly in models exhibited. One may reply to this comparison by saying that a museum is necessarily a work of time. From the historical standpoint this is, of course, true, but it is not necessarily true in connection with a working museum intended to illustrate current practice. For instance, the oldest mining school in Germany, that at Freiberg, has much excellent historical material, but very little on modern practice, while Berlin, one of the youngest German mining schools, has a most extensive and valuable collection of modern appliances and models. This is true in spite of the fact that one of the best-known model shops is at Freiberg, from which many of, the models to be seen in America have come. The Territory of Afars and Issas is to receive its independence from France on June 27, 1977. The Territory's economic income was based on entrepôt trade through the port of Djibouti and trans-shipment of goods on the Chemin de Fer Franco-Ethiopian (CFE) railroad. The Territorial budget was scheduled to in- crease from $32.6 million3 in 1976 to $36 million in 1977, despite severe shortfalls in 1976 stemming from inflation and a persistent balance-of-trade deficit. Subsidies from France continued to sustain the economy, and the French pledged to provide approximately $140 million in aid annually after independence. In 1976, financial agreements were concluded with a number of Arab oil-producing countries, including Saudi Arabia which granted $10 million toward development projects. The new Republic of Djibouti is scheduled to become the 49th member State of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the 21st member of the Arab League, and to receive aid from their financial institutions. With the dawning of a new century came the beginning of a new era in the coal industry. Instead of the traditional practice of only buying and selling produced coal in the United States, a coal futures market was established. The New York Mercantile Exchange began trading coal futures in July 2001. But, even in this new era, many of the old is-sues that have beset the coal industry still remain, as was evident in2001. Coal production increased to are cord level during 2001, according to preliminary data from the US Energy Information Administration(EIA). Production in 2001 rose by4% to 1.01 Gt (1.12 billion st), compared with 2000 (Table 1). This barely surpassed the previous record level of 1 Gt (1.11 billion st)set in 1998. Coal consumption remained unchanged. The additional production was used to replenish the depleted stockpiles that had resulted after two years of declining coal production and increasing coal consumption.

The extraction of copper(II) from sulphate solution was investigated using LIX®984N in kerosene. The parameters that could affect the extraction, such as equilibrium pH, extractant concentration, salt concentration, various diluents, and temperature, were separately investigated. On the basis of slope analysis, the complex formed in the organic phase is proposed to be CuR2, where R is the anionic part of LIX®984N. The extraction equilibrium constant and Gibbs free energy ( G) of the extraction process were determined. The positive value of H obtained from temperature variation studies showed that the extraction process is endothermic. The extraction of copper was lowest when chloroform was used as the diluent. Separation and recovery of copper from a synthetic copper-nickel solution containing 6.35 g/L Cu(II) and 0.58 g/L Ni(II) was carried out using 20%(v/v) LIX® 984N. The separation factor ( = DCu/DNi) was found to be pH-dependent. A two-stage batch countercurrent extraction was carried out at an O:A ratio of 3:4 at equilibrium pH 1.05 for extraction of copper from copper-nickel solution, followed by copper stripping from the loaded organic phase with 15% H2SO4 at an O:A ratio of 3:1.

Abstract The design of deep excavation pits in rock mass is dependent as well on the mechanical properties of the rock mass as for example the orientation and the type of discontinuities like bedding planes, joints and fissures, the length of the discontinuities (persistence), the grade of weathering, the strength of rock mass, and the shear strength in the discontinuities, etc., and also on the respective boundary conditions specific for the project, and here especially the geometrical boundary conditions. The basic mutual influences and interactions between these boundary conditions are explained and exemplary presented at an excavation pit with a depth of 18,5 m, situated at a slope with a surface near groundwater table. Résumé La planification des excavations profondes dépend aussi bien de la qualité mécanique du roc, par exemple la location de la texture de la surface de moindre résistance, le degré de rupture, le degré de décomposition, la dureté du roc et la résistance limitée au cisaillement de la texture de la surface de moindre résistance que des conditions limitées spécifiques pour le projet, ici en particulier des conditions limitées géométriques. Les influences et interactions essentielles et mutuelles entre les conditions limitées isolées seront expliquées et présentées à l’aide d’une excavation 18,5 m de profondeur, située sur une pente où le niveau des eaux souterraines est près de la surface. THE following notes were accumulated during the years 1905 to 1911, when the writer was employed at Stannary Hills. The writer's duty took him over the underground workings daily. In odd moments the geology of the surrounding country was worked out. As the time for this purpose was limited, many interesting points had to be left, untouched. The faulting system in the mines was of such a puzzling character that it seemed as if the geology of the surrounding district might throw some light on it. Dr Jack, in 1907, reported on these mines for the shareholders, but came to no definite conclusions. Unfortunately, the writer has not had access to this report for many years. At the time of his visit the larger develbpments in the Ivanhoe and, Kitchenen orebodies (see Fig 1, B2) were only being opened up. Mr. H. Herman mentions Stannary Hills on p 320, Proceedings Aust Inst ME, new series, No 14, and on p 326 expresses the opinion that the pipe or joint-veins (as at Irvine bank and Stannary Hills) were more valuable to follow than lodes in the granite in that district.GEOLOGY OF DISTRICTThe main feature of the area mapped is a band of altered sedimentary rocks which carry no fossils. It is a mile wide, and consists of a hard band of greywackes 200 ·t ·300 yds. wide, flanked on both sides by contorted shales which become more micaceous as the granite-area to the east is approached. The strata have a general strike of N. 30° W., with a steep westerly dip. A large area of acid intrusive rocks occurs to the west of this band. I would like to share some observations about the mining business and place the ongoing discussion in the context of our changed world. The mining industry practices its trade in a universe defined by prices, laws and governments. Prices, as in what the industry is paid for what it produces, and the costs of goods and services. Laws that have to be transparent and fair. And governments that the industry prefers to be stable and supportive of the industry, and certainly not corrupt. However, the day-to-day realities of the mining business in 2000 are not what they were 10 years ago. Several events have occurred that have resulted in a less populated workplace that is obliged to work much smarter and faster. These include real declining prices for most mineral commodities; low and diminishing returns to company shareholders; massive restructuring of the industry through mergers, partnerships and alliances; gold’s changed role from reserve currency to just another commodity; the growing importance of native title and the startling imperatives of “sustainable development.” In addition, the “borderless world” now means that resource companies will need to pass the test of being responsible corporate guests who respect and enhance the social, moral and societal values of their host countries.

[The theory of fractional "eduction" of oil from oil shale has been used by several inventors as the basis for the design of retorts for the production of oil f roan the oil shales of the United States. The term fractional "eduction" gives expression to the rather common belief that when an oil shale is he-test et produces light, low-boiling oils at to temperatures, and increasingly heavier, higher-boiling oils as the temperature of retorting rites. The theory evidently had its is origin in the fact that crude petroleum may be fractionally distilled, yielding light oils at low distillation temperatures, and heavier oils as the distillation temperature increases. Thus, gasoline is produced from petroleum at relatively log: temperatures, kerosene at a higher temperature, and heavier products such as gas-oil and lubricating distillates at still higher temepratures, The writers have examined several oil-shale retorts designed to take advantage of the belief that crude, and en some cases refined, gasoline can be recovered from the shale at low temperatures; kerosene at higher temperatures, and so on. Such retorts are usually designed to operate continuously, and. have several vapor-pipes lending from them at differing intervals and passing to separate condensers. Designers of such retorts expect that the distillate from the low-temperature parts of the retort will be gasoline, and that as the shale basses to zones of increasingly higher temperatures, the vapor lines leading from these zones will remove increasingly heavier products such as kerosene, gas-oil, etc.]

Recent data contributions to New Zealand Mesozoic terrane geology confirm the consensus interpretation thatNew Zealand grew by the progressive addition of material by plutonic and accretionary processes along the Gondwana margin. The data also: 1. emphasise the discontinuous but inter-related nature of these processes of continental growth, 2. better establish a direct Gondwana correlation of the Western Province and probable Gondwana provenance of at least some of the Eastern Province, 3. suggest specific times and places when passive or strike-slip rather than subduction regimes are recorded along the south Gondwana margin, and 4. potentially lead to interpretations emphasising parautochthonous rather than far travelled relationships between many New Zealand terranes.

Hard times continued to plague the industry when the calendar rolled over to 2000. During 1999, the United States economy had grown vigorously, capping the longest economic expansion in United States history. However, the mining industry was not so fortunate. Commodity prices remained in a slump in the “new-economy” that was fueled by excitement and speculation about the power of the Internet during the infancy of the Information Age. Much of the investment money that once went to mining and exploration was now headed to the world of virtual gold mines. SME President Donald E. Ranta implemented new technology into his plans for SME. His two major goals were new membership growth and to foster the establishment of the comprehensive Internet presence for the Society’s technical information. His strategic priorities included enhancing the quality and quantity of publications, programs, meetings and short courses. “The Internet is the vehicle that will advance the priorities,” he said.

The principle of personal safety is as old as the human race. The application of this principle to industry is of much more recent origin, and may be said to be almost exclusively the product of the twentieth century. The enormous strides in technique and production mode prior to the turn of the century had been achieved without any real regard for the crippled human by-products of that expansive era. It was accepted that. accidents were inevitable and formed part of the price that must be paid for production. It was not until 1885 that the first Workmen's Compensation Act was passed in Germany making the employer financially liable for injuries suffered on his plant.With awakening social conscience came the first organised efforts to reduce accidents in industry. Early 19th century literature dealing with the development of powerdriven machinery and the growth of industry in Europe contains many references to the unsafe and unhealthy working conditions that accompanied the change-over from the home workshop to the industrial plant. By the year 1900, there were in Germany - and a little later in England governmental regulations dealing with the guarding of hazardous machinery. American industry, now the acknowledged leader in industrial safety, admits freely that when an organised safety movement commenced in that country, there was already a considerable amount of information available to them from European experience. The combustible volatile matter in coal mine roadway dusts (CVM) has been determined using x-ray backscatter techniques. The correlation between x-ray and chemical techniques is reasonably good for the 92 samples from collieries on the Bulli seam, and the maximum error expected at the maximum level of 11· 5 weight per cent CVM permitted in the N.S.W. Coal Mines Regulation Act, 1912, as amended, is about ± 2·5 weight per cent. This x-ray technique can be used only when the combustible volatile content of the coal matter (cvm) varies within a limited range, and a separate calibration is required for each coal seam.Portable equipment based on a radioisotope x-ray source ahd digital ratemeter makes possible simple and rapid analysis, and with adaptation to use in coal mines should lead to much more comprehensive testing- ofroadways and hence improved overall prevention of coal dust explosions.

The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge is a 6.92 kilometer (4.3 mile) long major toll bridge span that crosses the northern San Francisco Bay in a highly seismically active region. Tutor-Saliba / Koch / Tidewater JV was contracted by Caltrans to conduct a comprehensive seismic retrofit. The JV provided geotechnical planning and quality control services as described herein, under normal oversight by Caltrans. Part of the robust foundation retrofit design included the installation of 26 new, large diameter piles, including eleven 3.81 m (12.5 ft) diameter, cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) marine piles that were drilled 9.15 m (30 ft) into the bedrock beneath the Bay, where the water depth ranged up to about 21.3 m (70 ft). These reinforced concrete-filled composite piles have a steel shell permanent casing from the bridge substructure pile cap through the water column and 30.5 to 39.6 meters (100 ft to 130 ft) of marine sediments to the top of rock. This paper discusses construction, inspection (ranging from the QA employed in the planning of the CIDH pile installation methods and equipment to the actual construction inspection required for the routine installation of the shafts), problems that were encountered during construction, and the solutions that were developed and implemented. Inspection, particularly with the usual difficulties in the marine environment, coupled with the difficult and complex bedrock conditions was particularly challenging, and ranged from non-destructive testing to "in-water, inshell" diver inspection. Similarly, the complexities of dealing with both the steel casing "riser" and the associated drilled shaft (rock socket) portion of these composite foundation elements created some unusual issues. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC), has conducted research to improve electrical fault detection on coal mine direct current (dc) trolley systems. Present circuit breaker protection systems are current-magnitude-based and cannot discern between normal traffic and high resistance electrical faults. Tests were conducted at cooperating mines to assist in developing a neural-network-based detection algorithm for distinguishing between electrical faults and normal operation. The Fast Fourier Transform of the trolley rectifier current signature served as baseline data for the neural network. During field tests, the algorithm performed with greater than 90% accuracy.

The Getchell Mine is located on the east flank of the Osgood Mountain Range in the Potosi Mining District, Humboldt County, NV. Mining in the area first began in 1883 for copper, lead and silver in skarn-related deposits. Tungsten was discovered in the skarns in 1916 and was mined sporadically until 1957. The first major discovery was made in 1933 when two Winnemucca prospectors, Edward Knight and Emmett Chase, found gold at the present site of the Getchell gold mine. In 1934, after a small amount of preliminary prospecting, the claims were purchased by Noble H. Getchell of Midas, NV. The Getchell Mine Inc. was organized and exploration and development work began on a broad scale. Major funding was provided by George Wingfield and investors he assembled. Laxalt described Wingfield’s immediate history prior to his financing of Getchell as follows.

Education in Australia now has to respond to a very wide political and policy agenda. The political emphasis is upon increasing participation and retention rates with a view to greater graduation rates in `high-tech' disciplines. There is an implied linkage between `education' and `economic well-being'. Our argument is that equalitarianism in education tends towards mediocrity. In this context many Geoscience educators view the future with pessimism. The argument is that science has been `sold short' and needs revitalising. We contend that Geoscience coursework should be a feature of both secondary and tertiary education in Australia. To this end we propose six policy initiatives to increase the content of Geoscience in education programmes.
