A series of five signature holes were blasted at the Highvale Mine and the resultant seismic data was analyzed to make recommendations on how best to address neighbour complaints regarding blast vibrations. From an analysis of peak vibration levels measured at the closest neighbour for blasting during 2016, it was determined that the blast vibration intensity varied between 1.4 to 4.3 mm/sec (0.06-0.17 ins./sec.), well below the level of concern for the onset of minor damage to residential structures, however, the frequency of the blast vibrations was between 2.2 and 9.7 Hz, which is within the range of the natural resonant frequency for a single story home. This was determined to be the cause of the neighbour complaints, as the home would be responding to the blast vibrations.

The status of sampling practices in the gold mining industry in Africa was determined as an initial step in a process to standardize sampling practices in the mining industry. Twenty-one gold mines, twenty metallurgical plants, and thirteen laboratories were rated for the potential influence of the relevant sampling errors on each component of the particular sampling system. The findings of the study on the status of equipment, standards, procedures, and management principles were presented in a dissertation (Spangenberg, 20121) and are now used by AngloGold Ashanti?s mines in the quest for correct sampling practices. The information is also used to compile a guideline on leading practice procedures for sampling methods in gold mining. THE Australian States and New Zealand have for many years provided instruction in mining, metallurgy, geology, and their allied subjects through their Universities and Schools of Mines. Though such education has been provided at considerable expenditure, there is no legal recognition whatever given to the holders of degrees, diplomas, or certificates granted by the authorities controlling these educational institutions. Certain of the, Australian States and New Zealand require, however, that mine managers and other officials employed by the mining industry shall 'hold' certificates granted by their respective Mines Departments.The position at present is that each educational institution is practically a law unto itself, and therefore in many ways there is a want of uniformity amongst institutions all aiming at the same result the training of mining men. Ground movements can arise from a large number of sources and can have a significant effect on nearby piles and deep foundations. The loading of the piles by ground movements is a different mechanism to that arising from direct applied loading to the pile head, and consequently it is not generally possible to adequately analyze the effects of ground movements simply by applying some type of equivalent loading to the pile head. The main effects of ground movements are the development of additional movements, axial forces and bending moments in the piles, and thus the key design aspects are related to movements and to the structural integrity of the pile. However, the ultimate geotechnical load carrying capacity is generally not affected by the ground movements themselves. This paper will describe an approach to the analysis of ground movement effects on piles, considering axial and lateral movements separately. Some of the main features of pile response will be discussed for three specific problems involving ground movements: piles near and within embankments, piles near an excavation for a pile cap, and piles subjected to seismic ground motions.

The Batu Hijau porphyry Cu-Au deposit in south-western Sumbawa, Indonesia is an ideal natural laboratory to study the fractionation of iron isotopes in magmatic rocks that range in composition from basaltic andesite to tonalite. Intrusive rocks are associated with a porphyry system that contains well-preserved early hypogene copper mineralisation. We analysed pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation igneous intrusive rocks. We also separated magnetite, chalcopyrite and bornite from hypogene porphyry-style quartz veins, and measured the Fe-isotope ratios of samples by solution multi-collector ICP-MS. Iron isotopic composition of samples from the magmatic suite show an increasing d57Fe with increasing SiO2, supporting geochemical and textural evidence that the Batu Hijau Tonalites underwent closed system fractionation. Equilibrium and co-existing mineral textures allow the calculation of the following preliminary empirical mineral-mineral fractionation factors at 500°C for certain mineral pairs.Iron isotopes have the potential to provide geothermometric data to complement fluid inclusion data, especially where heating stages have operational limitations and where fluid boiling results in a wide variety of inclusion types that may make analysis difficult.CITATION:Wawryk, C M, Foden, J D and Garwin, S L, 2015. The use of electronic detonators to improve fragmentation is becoming universally accepted. However their use in limiting peak particle vibrations levels is still in its infancy. Most of which is anecdotal, in that few actual scientific studies have been carried and published. This paper details the research work carried out at a limestone quarry in the County of North Yorkshire in Northern England. Here a series of blasts were carried out some used non-electric detonators whilst others used electronic detonators. The majority of blasts were carried out at the same burden, spacing and deck charge weight loadings. Initially, the key variable was the difference in detonator type and then leading on to using the electronic detonators at specific exact different detonator timing intervals. Later the study was extended to include double row as well as single row blasts.

The World Trade Center (WTC) is located on the west side of Manhattan in New York City, approximately 0.5 miles north of Wall Street, and is owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PA). As part of the WTC site redevelopment the New York City Transit Authority?s No. 1 subway line which runs through the site below grade, was underpinned so that the soil beneath it could be removed along with the rest of the new east basement excavation. Consequently a scheme comprising micropile installation through and around the existing subway box was designed. The subway had to remain in use throughout save for planned weekend outages to allow a portion of the underpinning to be fitted through or on to the existing structure. At times this involved accessing and drilling from within the subway tunnel under short General Order (GO) Subway shutdown periods. At either end of the subway passage through the WTC site jet grout underpinning was designed to provide support and to complete the excavation and construction of the east basement wall in the areas beneath the subway where it was impossible to install a slurry wall. The jet grout blocks thus formed had to be largely installed around the clock during 53 hour long GO weekend outages and had to overcome severe logistical constraints in and over the tunnel. The jet grout blocks had to provide strengths of at least 500 psi at 3 days and 700 psi at 28 days. The jet grouted soil mass also had to have a level of permeability less than 0.03 feet/day (1 x 10-7 m/s). After an extensive trial program and then production testing it was concluded that the glacial till above the rock proved to be a particularly difficult soil strata to collect test data from and hence the level of observational monitoring was increased to progress the excavation works. Throughout the installation of micropiles and jet grout columns extensive monitoring was in place and prompted a variety of working method changes. Many countries, provinces, territories and states in the European Union, Australia, Canada, the United States and elsewhere have begun implementing sustainability programs. Most of those programs, however, stop short of sustainable management of aggregate resources. Sustainable practices do not always have to be conducted under the title of sustainability. This case study describes how Lafarge implemented the principles of sustainability even though there was an absence of existing local government policies or procedures addressing sustainable resource management. Jefferson County is one of three counties in the six-county Denver, CO, region that has potentially available sources of crushed stone. Crushed stone comprises 30percent of the aggregate produced in the area. And it plays a major role in regional aggregate resource needs. Jefferson County is home to four of the five crushed stone operations in the Denver region. Lafarge operates one of those four quarries.

Underwater exploration for marine resources using camera-equipped devices (OFOS, ROV, AUV) is receiving growing attention. This development is creating a continuously growing pile of digital underwater images leading to a serious bottleneck in the analysis. However, any harvesting strategy must be coupled to an efficient and effective assessment of the biodiversity in the area of interest and in nearby control areas. To integrate manual image and computational image interpretation on different levels (i.e. regarding geology and environmental sciences and taxonomy), sophisticated software support is required, which is not yet offered explicitly, neither by commercial software companies nor by academic or other publicly founded institutions. Here, we present the first version of a new digital asset management system that offers functionalities for easy data management, sharing, manual annotation and integration of computational modules for image enhancement/pre-processing and interpretation. The functionality is demonstrated with data from the CCZ provided by the BGR Hannover.

In the manufacture of steel by any process the refining period involves the partial elimination of the metalloids carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and silicon, by virtue of their reactions with ferrous oxide. At the end of this refining stage the metal consists chiefly of iron in which small amounts of these materials are dissolved. Unless some deoxidizer is added to the steel at this time, the reaction between carbon and ferrous oxide will continue with such force that it is impossible to form sound steal in the ingot molds. Instead, the product will exhibit a marked porosity due to the formation and trapping of carbon monoxide-the product of the reaction mentioned. However, if deoxidizers are added, steel may be obtained which is dense and free from gas bubbles. At the same time the deoxidation products will remain in the steal as impurities. For example, silicon additions form Si02 or combinations of Si02 and FeO. Additions of manganese form deoxidation products consisting of various proportions of MnO and FeO. It is also quite obvious that simultaneous additions of manganese and silicon will form oxide combinations either in the binary system MnO-SiO2 or in the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. Work at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Advisory Board, involved the study of such deoxidizing reactions and their products. In this connection considerable information is necessary concerning FeO, MeO, Si02, and Al 203, and their various combinations. Some of the most needed data are the melting points of all of these materials. At the outset of this work ordinary methods of melting point determinations were found to be inadequate for various reasons, and the procedure finally selected involved the use of the micropyrometer with occasional corroboration by quenching methods, The reasons for this selection, together with a description of the apparatus, are given in the following pages.

A glance at the following chart reveals that because of the continued poor economy, the slump in industrial mineral production continued into 1980. Gypsum was down 17% from 1979; cement down 9%, sand and gravel, 17%, and crushed stone, 11%. All these downward trends reflect the high interest rates and high costs that slowed construction starts. Domestic fluorspar was down 21% and imports off 14% due to the steel iudustry slump. However, potash production was up 8% and phosphate, 5%. Increased drilling activity spurred au increase in barite production of 25%. Most other industrial minerals posted losses with only a few insignificant increases. As expected, prices were higher, reflecting increases due to high costs for labor, supplies, and above all, energy. Increasing energy and transportation costs also had their effect on industrial mineral production. Railroad freight rates increased 16-22% including fuel surcharge; truck rates increased 11-14%a; and ocean freight rates increased 20% for finished goods. The 1979 shortage of boa and hopper cars did not continue into 1980-most likely due to low production of many of the hulk industrial mineral commodities. All in all, 1980 was not a good Year for industrial minerals.

Indian tribes own a substantial portion of the West's minerals. More importantly, Indian reservations contain coal, oil and gas, uranium, and oil shale reserves in unusually large and unencumbered blocks. Many tribes are now prepared to intensify development of their large reserves knowing that they can offer energy partners the unique opportunity to develop major energy facilities free of overlapping local, state, and federal permitting authorities. The tribes, therefore, can offer mineral developers both substantial reserves and an unusual degree of freedom from a multiplicity of government regulation. In the past, Indians and energy companies enjoyed only partial success as business partners. Indian tribes lacked the resources and know-how to act as equal partners with large oil and gas and mining operators. The tribes relied on the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) to initiate and execute reservation energy projects, and as a result the tribes never developed adequate tribal structures and the expertise to responsibly manage their energy resources. At the same time industry made little effort to understand and learn the laws, customs, and institutions existing on Indian reservations. To the contrary, industry found it easier to bypass the tribes and deal with BIA officials. But the situation has changed. In 1975 the tribes organized an effective coalition, the Council of Energy Resources Tribes (CERT), which recently acquired substantial federal assistance to bring the tribes a level of technical and business expertise that begins to equal that of industry. Because the tribes have changed the rules of the game, industry must now change and learn to work directly with tribal governments. A working knowledge of Indian law, practices, customs, and policies must be acquired by energy companies before beginning negotiations with tribal governments for development of reservation energy resources.

El presente trabajo describe el plan de minado del yacimiento de Cuajone a través de las leyes de corte variable y stock dinámicos con el fin de maximizar el valor presente neto a largo plazo. La estrategia de leyes de corte variables consiste en seleccionar material desde una ley superior a la ley de corte de equilibrio del plan. Luego, el material de alta ley es llevado directamente a la planta, que al ser extraído anticipadamente, genera un mayor valor para el negocio, al tiempo que aprovecha el costo de oportunidad. De otro lado, el mineral restante que haya sido extraído es llevado a depósitos de almacenamiento (stocks dinámicos). Como consecuencia, esta estrategia permite realizar una mejor toma de decisiones que se ajuste más a la realidad de cada periodo, logrando aprovechar al máximo los periodos de alza de precio de los metales, así como poder incrementar la producción de concentrado en periodo de depresión de los precios.

Historically in Australia and the United States many coal mines deposited raw wash plant fines into large slurry impoundments. At the time the technology and market economics did not exist to make it viable to recover coal from these tailings. Today better technology exist to dredge and clean the tailings and there are circumstances where government regulations and market forces have come together to make coal recovery from these old tailings impoundments economically viable. This paper discusses the processes and equipment being used in tailings impoundment reclamation operations in Australia and the United States, and discusses the economic forces driving these operations.

As ligas de alumínio, em particular, apresentam certas restrições quando submetidas ao processo de união por soldagem. Isto se deve, principalmente, por apresentarem elevada condutividade térmica, elevada contração na solidificação e elevada solubilidade de hidrogênio. Levando em conta estes aspectos, o processo de soldagem FSW apresenta grande potencial para esta aplicação, visto que, é autógena, realizada sem fusão do material e sem utilização de escórias ou gases de proteção. A partir deste conceito, o objetivo do presente trabalho é avaliar a união de chapas finas de alumínio da liga 3105 H26, com espessura de 0,7mm. Para realização dos testes, foram analisados fatores como: penetração da ferramenta nas chapas processadas, ângulo de ataque, tipo de ferramenta e modo de controle de penetração (posição ou força). Os resultados indicaram que o modo de controle por força se mostrou o mais indicado para chapas finas, e que o regime transiente no início de soldagem foi a parte mais crítica para controle da qualidade da junta soldada.

Copper, sulphur, nickel, cobalt, palladium, silver, and gold can be recovered from the copper sulphide precipitated from the "copper boil" of the Sherritt-Gordon nickel process used at Western Mining Corporation's Kwinana nickel <refinery. The method is based on an oxidative ammonia leach of copper, nickel, and the precious metals at temperatures below 40°C to produce, in part, elemental sulphur, in the residue. This is followed by heating to decompose thiosulphate and remove some ammonia with precipitation of some of the copper, palladium, gold, and silver. Addition of sulphur dioxide to pregnant liquor precipitates copper, as either Chevreul's salt or copper(I) ammonium sulphite, together with the remaining gold and silver. Less than 10 per cent of the dissolved palladium and less than 1 per cent of nickel and cobalt precipitate to this stage.In one option, the Chevreul's salt is dissolved in a solution of copper(II) sulphate, acetonitrile, and water to generate a solution of copper(I) sulphate. Gold and silver do not dissolve. The solution of copper(I) sulphate is thermally disproportionated by distilling acetonitrile to give exceptionally pure copper powder, with desirable characteristics for powder metallUrgy. Nickel, cobalt, and ammonium sulphate are recovered from the motherliquor of the Chevreul's salt precipitation by return to the Sherritt-Gordon process, where recovery procedures already exist. Palladium is recycled for eventual removal as a sulphide with the gold and silver.In the other option, solid copper(I) ammonium-sulphite is <thermally disproportionated in water at 150°C to copper powder.

Very few of those occupied in pursuits other than mining have any conception of the extent of boring operations that have been carried out on the gold and coal fields of Victoria, or of the valuable and definite knowledge obtainable by such means. The subject comprises various branches, which it will be necessary to describe in detail. The three main divisions are The Administrative, which includes all financial work and general management. The Professional, dealing with topographical and geological work necessary before any scheme of boring can be laid out, the preparation of plans, the inspection of cores obtained from bore holes, the examination of diamonds, etc. The Mechanical Branch, dealing with the drilling machinery, setting of diamonds, maintenance of stores, etc. In 1877, the Goverpment of Victoria decided to assist in prospecting the mineral resources of the colony by the aid of diamond drill boring, and for that purpose, a vote of £5,000 was passed, with which were purchased three diamond dulls, an American type being adopted.
