"This paper reviews flowsheets generally used in gold rooms to upgrade primary gravity concentrates particularly those of Knelsons. It is concluded that even for small operations, which treat between 250 and lo00 kg of concentrates per day, there is a strong economic incentive to include in the flowsheet magnetic removal of tramp iron, at least two shaking tables, screening of either table feed or table tails at 150-212 um, and scavenging of table tails with a small centrifuge. Headroom, rather than floor space, is often inadequate in most gold room designs, and limits gravity flow and flowsheet flexibility. Experimental data are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of a small Knelson Concentrator to scavenge significant amounts of gold (up to 91 %) from fine table tails.RésuméCet article examine les schémas d’évolution généralement utilisés pour traiter les concentres gravimétriques d‘or, en particulier ceux produits par concentrateur Knelson. Nous en venons à la conclusion que même pour un petit circuit d’une capacité de 250 A 1000 kg/jour pourrait bénéficier des opérations unitaires suivantes : concentrateur magnétique pour extraire la feraille, au moins deux tables A secousses, criblage de l’alimentation ou du rejet d’une ou des tables i une maille de 150-212 um, et épuisages des rejets fins de table avec un centrifuge de petite capacité. C’est l’espace vertical du lieu où se fait cette concentration qui représente la contrainte la plus importante, plutôt que sa surface, puisqu’il faut maximiser l’écoulement par gravite des pulpes et s’offrir une certaine flexibilité quant à l’agencement final des opérations unitaires. El presente trabajo describe el sistema experto por circuito de molienda desarrollado en la Concentradora Toquepala, donde se aplica la tecnología del control experto-basada en conjuntos difusos y modelos matemáticos. Las ventajas que presenta la aplicación de los sistemas expertos comprenden el aumento de la capacidad de tratamiento, la disminución del costo de operación y del porcentaje del producto que no cumple las especificaciones. Asímismo, el sistema experto se integra al sistema de control para asistir al operador en la detección de los casos, donde las operaciones se puedan descontrolar, aunque ésta no sea realmente su principal función. Si se le configura y sintoniza correctamente, el sistema experto detecta, diagnostica en forma continua los problemas de operación y aplica modelos matemáticos y estadísticos de optimización, interactúando con un sistema de control DCS o PLC.

This paper describes the Contractor’s value engineering design and the construction of the Interstate I-90 highway tunnel sections under the South Station railroad yard in Boston, MA for the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, using tunnel jacking and ground freezing techniques. Three tunnel box sections were constructed and installed, with typical cross-sectional dimensions of 11.6 m x 23.8 m, and respective lengths of 50.9 m, 78.7 m and 115.6 m. A 12-compartment concrete shield was built as part of the front of each multi-sectional tunnel box structure. The jacking systems employed consisted of rear and intermediate jacking stations and up to 87 individual jacks, providing a maximum total thrust capacity of 42,300 t. The tunnel alignments pass through a geologic profile consisting of historic fill, which contains remnants of old waterfront structures, building foundations and a forest of 19th century vintage timber piles, underlain by organic sediments and marine clay. Ground cover over the tunnels is in the range of 1.8–7.6 m. The groundwater table is at depths of 1.5–3 m below surface grade. The paper discusses the techniques developed and equipment used to successfully build and install these tunnel box structures with minimal impact on the commuter and long distance railroad operations directly above the tunnel alignments. Figure 1 shows the track area at the I-90 EB and WB tunnels.

Abstract - The essential aims of additional borehole drilling are to improve the reliability of grade and tonnage estimates in each reserve class and to increase ore tonnages. The "GET" function presented in this paper considers strategies for achieving both of these goals simultaneously, and therefore is advantageous for selecting sites for additional boreholes. The "GET" function is either a linear or a non-linear product of three variables G, E, and T: f(G,E,T,) = G??E??T??where the values of any or all of the exponents ?, ?, and ??may differ from unity at the discretion of the user. G and E are the average estimated block grade and the average estimation error for ore blocks in one vertical column, and T is the compounded ore thickness within the column. To illustrate its utility, the GET function has been used for determination of the most advantageous sites for additional drilling in the Shah-Kuh Pb-Zn deposit in west central Iran.

"The Detour Lake mine is located 200 km northeast of Timmins, Ontario, Canada.The mill processes a free milling gold ore using both a gravity circuit and leaching with a state-of-the-art carbon-in-pulp circuit. The grinding circuit is a conventional SABC circuit with a tonnage of 55,000 tpd at 95 microns with the addition of pre-crushing upstream of the SAG mill.The Detour Lake mine has one of the largest gyratory crusher in the world (60"" x 113"") and over the years, many improvements have been made to this crusher with the result of improving plant throughput. This paper will present how choke feeding the gyratory crusher has been found to be one of the main influences on crusher product particle size and plant throughput. It will explain how the effect of choke feeding the gyratory was measured and from that, the various changes made to improve choke feeding of the gyratory crusher.IntroductionOre is hauled from the open pit mine and dumped directly into a single 60"" x 113"" primary gyratory crusher. The live capacity of both the feed and discharge hoppers of the gyratory crusher are designed for two (2) truck loads each, assuming a nominal payload of 300 tonnes per truck. The surge bin under the primary crusher feeds an apron feeder that controls the ore feed rate at approximately 4,200 tph onto a 227 metres long x 1.52 metres wide belt conveyor with a nominal capacity of 4,200 tph.The primary crusher is operated at an open side setting of 172 millimetres to produce a F80 feed to the secondary crushing circuit of 135 millimetres."

It is difficult to remove cadmium from raw indium using only electrolytic refining because their standard potentials are similar. In this paper, physical and chemical methods were used to remove Cd from raw indium. Indium metal is vacuum refined for two hours at 400°C with a vacuum pressure of 20 Pa. In this process, 99.70% of the Cd can be removed. The removal rate of Cd reaches 90% to 95% when indium is further smelted for 10 minutes in a 20% glycerin solution of KI and I2 at 180°C. When pre-indium is electrolytic refined in an In2(SO4)3-H2SO4 system, in which the indium content is 80 to 100 g/L, the pH is 2.0-3.0 and the current density is 80 to 100 A/m2, the contents of the impurities decrease and the purity of the indium product reaches 99.99%.

For many decades control strategies have been based upon samples taken from liquid steel, molten slag and gas phase as well as from solid products. Because of recent developments in the areas of dynamic control models, artificial intelligence and expert systems, there is an increasing incentive to develop diagnostic sensors, which permit in-situ rapid determinations of concentrations of various elements in molten steel. In this paper, an overview is given on recent developments in the areas of sensors for use in ferroalloy and steel production. Particular emphasis will be given on (i) innovative application of sensors for on-line determinations of dissolved elements, Si, P, N, H and Cr in molten iron and ferroalloys, (ii) evaluation of inclusions in liquid metal and (iii) rapid determinations of slag compositions.

Requirements for minerals are on the increase globally and the deep sea offers a potential source of essential materials. Extracting these minerals from what is considered an environmentally sensitive area, and one about which little is still known, is a challenging activity, which needs careful consideration and an appropriate environmental impact assessment to be carried out. Extraction of material from the deep sea beds can cause disturbance or damage to benthic communities; impact on mobile marine species such as fish, mammals and reptiles; cause increases in suspended sediment and sediment deposition onto potentially sensitive areas or potentially release contaminants which were previously bound to the sediment. This paper discusses the potential environmental issues surrounding extraction of deep-sea deposits using aggregate dredging techniques and how those issues can be appropriately assessed. In particular issues of suspended sediments, plume transport, water and sediment quality and underwater noise impacts on potentially sensitive species and habitats will be explored.

Load behaviour in an industrial mill has been measured directly by inserting probes through liner bolts. The data from conductivity probes have indicated the presence of premature centrifuging during manipulation of the load mass. Overloading conditions were also encountered. Overloading and premature centrifuging both reduce the power drawn by the mill. These effects have been successfully modelled.

The paper reports on a vacation work project conducted at Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft, Anglo Platinum, where there was a need to optimize the transport of personnel to level 15 and below. Approximately 900 men per hour need to travel between the shaft and the start of the current chairlift system. Time studies were used as the major indicator of the extent of the current problem, and it is recommended that a new chairlift system be installed to cover the distance from the vertical shaft station at level 15 to the chairlift decline station on level 15. A capital cost of approximately R10 million is necessary to carry out the proposed recommendation. Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft has the capacity to wind 1070 people per hour, and the current labour complement going to the level 15 shaft station stands at 1570 employees; thus at optimum efficiency the proposed chairlift system could transport the entire shift to the start of the current chairlift system in only 1 hour and 45 minutes. Reducing the distance walked at the start of the shift may also have an impact on productivity.

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT The Big Walnut Augmentation Rickenbacker Interceptor project began in 1995with the preparation of the Scope of Services for the design of the Rickenbacker Interceptor, with service to and around the Rickenbacker Air Force base. The air base was soon to be placed under civilian control through a Port Authority, with an expected influx of businesses and services, requiring increased sanitary service capability. Due to political differences regarding annexation and other issues, the project was placed on hold. In mid 1996 the Scope of Services was rewritten with more emphasis on a tunneling option, but still only addressing the air base and surrounding tributary are a sanitary service requirements. The consultant selection process began in late 1996 with the Request for Statements of Qualifications issued in December. Three firms were selected to furnish proposals based on the revised Scope of Services that now included requirements for hydraulic modeling of the service areas and the Big Walnut Outfall (BWO) and an expanded soil investigation requirement. All three firms were requested to make presentations to the selection committee, with the committee selecting URS Greiner for further consideration and negotiation. A contract was entered into in August of 1997with URS Greiner. The major sub-consultants were Lachel and Associates, Inc., H.R.Gray and Associates and Solar Testing Laboratories, Inc. The project began with geological investigations, preliminary soil borings, well investigations, tributary area evaluations, hydraulic modeling of the BWO system and research into other projects planned for the Rickenbacker airport and surrounding area. The hydraulic modeling of the BWO and the proposed Rickenbacker Interceptor confirmed that the BWO suffered wet weather surcharging and would require augmentation to properly convey the future flows to the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant(SWWTP). The project scope expanded to include evaluation of both the Rickenbacker Interceptor and the Big Walnut Augmentation projects. Both projects previously identified in the Capital Improvements Program. The work on the expanded scope for the Big Walnut Augmentation and the Rickenbacker Interceptor began with the evaluation of a parallel 2.75 meter (108") diameter augmentation sewer from SWWTP to S.R. 317and Parsons Avenue, then continuing east along S.R. 317 as the Rickenbacker Interceptor. In 1950, about a third of the world?s population lived in cities. That figure has steadily risen throughout the following decades. Now it is believed that about 60 percent of the estimated 8.1 billion people in 2030 will be living in urban areas. The strain on infrastructure in cities in the developed world is already showing. And the rapid growth in developing nations today is adding to the shortage of materials, equipment and labor needed to keep up with this growth. So, while materials and labor may be in short supply, there is no shortage of work for the underground tunneling and space industry. In June, 718 of those professionals from around the world were in San Francisco, CA for the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, put on by the Underground Construction Association (UCA) of SME. The attendees spent the three days of technical sessions listening to international authors discuss the state of the industry, new technologies that have become available and updates on major tunneling projects throughout the world. The accompanying exhibit attracted 79 vendors, who displayed the latest in tunneling and underground space equipment and services. In addition to the technical sessions and the exhibit, the NAT featured three short courses ? ?DRB Process Update Workshop,? ?Soft Ground Tunneling Technologies? and ?Underground Blasting Technology and Risk Management.? And the post-meeting field trip to the Devils Slide tunneling project near San Francisco was sold out.

With the proving of a mineable orebody at Orlando in May 1961, Peko Mines N.L. was faced with the decision of whether to mill the ore on site or to haul it 25 miles to central facilities at Peko. Orlando was a relatively small orebody, so that it was decided to haul, although no reliable assessment of possible ore haulage costs was available.The necessity for a good haul road was recognised from the beginning and a 17 mile, 12 ft wide, single seal bitumen road was constructed, to link the mine to the Stuart Highway and Peko. The initial selection of 20 ton capacity diesel-powered end-tipping ore carts was made, with the best information available at the time.Since then some 130,000 tons of ore have been carted over a period of 3 years, and this paper presents the experiences of this haulage operation and the lessons learned.A second mine has just been brought into operation at Ivanhoe, 19 miles from Peko. For this haul it was decided to use an ore haulage vehicle of the side tipping road train type, which would cart some 70 tons, or more than three times the load of the vehicles initially selected.Only about 5,000 tons had been hauled at the date of this paper, but preliminary figures indicate a cost 01 1· 65d./ton-mile as against 2·47d. for the smaller vehicles.It would appear that the road haulage of ore from small outlying mines to a central plant can be highly economical, if certain basic rules concerning haul roads and vehicle selection are followed. This paper does not try to determine the maximum tonnages and haul distances which would finally make road hauling uneconomical...

The case study has identified and characterised additional subsidence arising from longwall mining above or under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that the magnitude, mechanisms and prediction methods for such additional subsidence are different between the two mining configurations. This paper presents a proposed method to predict maximum vertical subsidence due to longwall mining under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that, unless different results from further new cases become available, the findings presented in this article, including the aforementioned prediction method, be applicable to the majority of sites in New South Wales, where multi-seam longwall mining is to take place. This article also presents an important concept of 'overburden modification' due to multi-seam mining. A causal relationship between the above-mentioned additional subsidence and 'overburden modification' has been identified as a result of the case studies. Further investigations into the physical processes that cause such overburden modification will be fundamental to the understanding and management of multi-seam subsidence.

Prospecting is certainly the world's biggest and best gambling business. It is a game where the chips cost many thousands and where many millions, even billions, can be won. An attractive feature of this gamble is the fact that the players are free to rig the odds as favorably as possible. Only the limited bounty of nature, the restrictions of the laws of the land, the competition from other players, the limited sagacity of the player himself— only these, and other factors, restrict the possibilities for large winnings. Today probably about half the land surface of the earth remains to be searched for signs of ore visible at the surface. It is fortunate that so much land still remains for exploration by relatively economical methods. Looking to the future, it is a good guess that the costs of finding ore will increase in response to increasing technical difficulties. To continue to achieve profits from prospecting, it will become necessary to analyze the business more skillfully, in a more and more sophisticated manner. Whenever feasible, qualitative concepts must be replaced by their quantitative equivalents, improvements, and extensions. THE GAMBLE The fact that prospecting is a gambling business reminds us at once of the elementary rule known as the law of gambler's ruin. I hesitate to mention so simple a rule in this company of experts. This rule expresses the rather serious chance of going broke when the odds for success are small, merely by a normal run of bad luck regardless of the long-run expectations of gain. The only sure way of avoiding this special risk of gambler's ruin is to have enough capital, and the will, to continue the play many times and thus ride out the inevitable runs of bad luck. For example, if the probability of success is one in ten for each venture, there is a 35 pct chance that ten successive ventures will fail in a row. But if one has the capital to continue the play through a run of 100 failures, then the chance of gambler's ruin is only 5 in 100,000. Almost any management, I suppose, would be under terrific pressure to cease the play during a long run of bad luck. To continue to prospect under such circumstances requires great confidence in the premises, and a firm conviction in the long-term expectation of profit. There is evidence which I shall mention that in the future even the strongest companies may not have the necessary capital to prospect on the ideal scale. Metal removal kinetics and metal ion selectivity in ion flotation were studied from a thermodynamic perspective. Surface tension data could be used with the Gibbs adsorption equation to quantitatively predict the metal ion removal kinetics in alkylsulfate-Cu systems. However, surface tensions predicted cation selectivity coefficients in the sodium dodecyl-sulfate (SDS)-Cu-Ca and SDS-Cu-Pb systems rather poorly, although the predicted order of the selectivity (Cu2+<Ca2+<Pb2+) was correct. Another thermodynamic selectivity model, which used the Grahame adsorption equation and a geometrical analysis, predicted cation selectivity coefficients that agreed very well with experimentally measured values.
