In Kansas, almost every oil well drilled into a limestone formation is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion. This is done to increase the potential capacity of the well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production (see p. 9), to shorten the time required to produce the recoverable oil, and to increase the quantity of oil recovered ultimately from the reservoir. The porosity and. permeability of limestone formations seldom are uniform throughout the proved area, consequently the production capacities of completed wells vary considerably. Constraints on pore water evolution in the aquifers of a sedimentary basin may be realised through stable isotope analyses of present day waters, and their comparison with water compositions calculated to have been in isotope equilibrium with the products of diagenesis during burial. Integrated with detailed petrographic observations, and thermal, structural and stratigraphic analyses, fluid migration patterns at various stages in a basin's history can be identified. This has important implications for modelling basin hydrology, hydrocarbon distribution, and reservoir quality in the Latrobe Group, Gippsland Basin, and oil-prone successions Elsewhere.

An assessment of methods currently available for the accurate determination of low concentrations of platinum in ores and mineral concentrates indicated that prior treatment of the sample by fire assay procedures is necessary. To enable rapid determinations to be carried out, instrumental methods applied to the metallic bead produced from the fire assay treatment have been evaluated, considering maximum flexibility for concentration variations, minimum chemical operations, and adequate sensitivity.Atomic absorption spectrometry proved suitable, giving solution determination limits of 0·4 p.p.m. Pt, 0·1 p.p.m. Pt, or 0·06 p.p.m. Pt under various extraction conditions using aqueous and organic agents. Thesedetermination limits related to 1 assay ton of sample (32·67 g) produced easily readable and accurate readings within the range of platinum contents (0·03-2·0 p.p.m.) of economic interest in deposit evaluation and prospecting. The technique shows promise of also being suitable for determination of palladium and gold.

A gold mine in north-eastern Africa has expanded throughput from 5 to 10 Mt/y in recent years. The original carbon regeneration kiln was incapable of achieving required throughput or meeting process conditions to reactivate the carbon due to heavy fouling by high molecular weight frothers and collectors. A new high temperature kiln was required.The design criteria for the carbon reactivation kiln and associated equipment were revised, then implemented in close cooperation with a kiln vender who had previously supplied kilns operating successfully on highly fouled carbon. The result is a whole facility, holistically designed to achieve the technical criteria.The new carbon reactivation facility has been operating since 1 July 2014. What have we learned? What has performed to expectations? What could be done better?This paper presents lessons learnt regarding the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of the Ausenco Carbon Reactivation Kiln. ‘Lessons’ are associated with threats and opportunities (risks) that have that have been realised. The resolution with which the different categories of resources are forecast for Witwatersrand gold reefs should ideally tie in with block sizes that are optimal in terms of the variability structures of the reefs. A tool, called the ?variancegram?, is proposed as a basis for block size choice. A variancegram is intrinsic to the particular reef and mine concerned. A further requirement is the ability to attach global confidence limits to weighted average estimates built up from combinations of local kriged estimates. Approximations to derive global kriging variances based on variables derived from local kriging deliver hugely inflated results if ordinary kriging is used, and markedly better, but not accurate, values if simple kriging is used. These approximations improve as the number of samples used in kriging each block is increased. It is shown that the behaviour of the different components of the global kriging variance with increasing number of samples, all differs, but they all link to the variancegram for the particular reef. The variancegram can thus be used to correct the different components to the values they would have had if all samples were used in kriging each block, and so deliver the ?correct? global kriging variance, even though only a limited number of samples were used in kriging each block. The desirability of having very stable solutions implemented in production systems is taken into account in the proposals. It is anticipated that the same variancegram findings will also hold for other densely sampled deposits, but this remains to be investigated.

THE object of the present paper is to give a brief description of the metallurgical process followed by the Grand Junction Co, and the results obtained therefrom. All figures quoted are from the actual working of the plant over a period of six months from January to June, 1910. The short ton of 2000 lb. is used by the company. Its gold is valued at 84s. per oz. fine, silver at 2s. per oz. fine. The ore consists essentially of a gangue of quartz and calcite, with 8 to 10%sulphide-pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and traces of arsenic and antimony. The colmtry-rock is a highlyaltered dacite. Small stringers of highly-mineralized ore penetrate the footwall of some of the lodes, forming a valuable stockwerk up to 3 ft. in thickness. In stoping, this is mined with the well defined lode, thus bringing into the mill at times a considerable quantity of hard country-rock. The gold exists in an exceedingly fine state of division, consequently rendering it necessary to grind very fine to obtain a satisfactory extraction.

The Santa Rita copper deposit first served as a source of native copper for Indian implements and weapons. In 1801 Santa Rita copper, trans- ported by mule train to Chihuahua, began to be used commercially for making coins. It was a small- scale operation made difficult by Indian raids, transportation costs and depletion of the higher grade ores. There was, moreover, no known method for economically extracting copper from the under- lying low grade sulfide ores. Originally, copper and copper oxide ores were mined by underground methods, but there was virtually no development of the deposit-which became United States territory after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848-for almost a hundred years. A number of small underground mines had been started during that time, but it was not until 1873 that all the principal claims were consolidated under one control.

Different ore types result from the irregular spatial distribution of the associated alkaline/carbonatite rocks and the zoned alteration profile within which apatite may have undergone reprecipitation. Different flotation responses are caused by their mineralogy, iron oxide impregnation and grain-size characteristics. Samples from seven deposits were crushed, screened and separated before being studied by chemical analysis, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy. Two main apatite varieties with peculiar crystal morphology were identified: hydroxy-fluorapatite as the primary phase and carbonate-fluorapatite as the reprecipitated phase. The former occurs as prismatic or ovoid grains and the latter as polycrystalline aggregates or crusts on the primary grains; both are associated with iron oxide coatings (primary) or intergrowths (secondary). Microflotation tests showed variations in flotability for particular apatite associations as well as intensity of iron oxide coatings. The differences in flotation behaviour can be related to morphological properties and chemical substitution in the apatite structure

A theoretical model for gas outbursts in underground coal mines is as follows. An outburst is the structural failure ofcoal due to excess stress resulting from body forces caused by gas pressure gradients. These body forces influence the stability of a mine face in the same manner that gravitational body forces affect the stability of the roof of a mine. The magnitude ofthese body forces can be appreciated when it is realized that for an average density coal, the gravitational body force is equal in magnitude to the force from a gas flow with a pressure gradient of 14 kPa m-I. Gas pressure gradients and the resultant stresses within a seam can be calculated with numerical methods. Thus, providing the necessary parameters can be measured or estimated, in principle the theory can be applied to compare the outburst risk of various mining arrangements.

Production of Ferro-alloys through submerged electric arc furnace involves use of electric power as one of the major inputs. Hence the production by this power intensive process can be made economically more competitive if the specific power requirement for smelting each ton of the product is brought down. This becomes all the more necessary where the power cost is comparatively high, like in India. Since the day FACOR started production of Ferro Chrome in 1968, briquetted chromite fines along with lumpy ores were used as feed. Subsequently the increase in the proportion of briquettes and reduction in lumpy ore helped in increasing the use of chromite fines and also brought down the specific power requirement. Meantime FACOR had been closely watching the technical development of use of sintered pellets in Outokumpu and SRC Processes which need still lower specific power. But the high capital requirement for a pelletisation plant kept FACOR from introducing pellets feed to their Ferro chrome furnaces. So this was postponed to be adopted in future. In February 2004 in the ?1st Ferro-Alloys India?, a paper [1] was presented by Dr. Amit Chatterjee. In the questions period after the presentation of the paper there came up a discussion in which it was revealed that with the Indian high grade chrome ores it was not possible to make sufficiently strong pellets, unless a larger percentage of bentonite is used as binder. This is because the Indian high grade Chrome ores have different mineralogy of gangue content compared to low grade ores in Finland and South Africa. Higher usage of bentonite gives rise to higher slag volume and this would result in increased specific power. Since FACOR had plans to go in future for sintered pellets feed, this gave rise to a doubt on success of pelletisation for Indian high-grade chrome ores. This prompted FACOR to take up experimental production of sintered chromite pellets and use of the same in one of their existing furnaces for production of high carbon Ferro chrome. The results are encouraging and are summarized in the paper.

In this paper a numerical formulation is presented for determination of the axial load along a cable bolt for a prescribed distribution of rock mass displacement. Results using the program CABLE indicate that during excavation, the load distribution that develops along an untensioned fully grouted cable bolt depends on three main factors: (i) the properties of the cable itself, (ii) the shear force that develops due to bond at the cable-grout interface (i.e. bond stiffness), and (iii) the distribution of rock mass displacement along the cable bolt length. In general, the effect of low modulus rock and mining induced stress decreases in reducing bond strength as determined from short embedment length tests, is reflected in the development of axial loads significantly less than the ultimate tensile capacity even for long cable bolts. However, the load distribution is also dependent on the deformation distribution in the reinforced rock mass. Higher cable bolt loads will be developed for a rock mass that behaves as a discontinuum with deformation concentrated on a few fractures, than for one which behaves as a continuum, either due to a total lack of fractures or a very high fracture density. This result suggests that the stiffness of a fully grouted cable bolt is not simply a characteristic of the bolt and grout used, but also of the deformation behavior of the ground. In other words, the same combination of bolt and grout will be stiffer if the rock behaves as a discontinuum than if it behaves as a continuum. This paper also explains the laboratory test programme used to determine the constitutive behavior of the Garford bulb and Nutcase cables bolts. Details of the test setup as well as the obtained results are summarized and discussed.

"HudBay’s Constancia project is a copper molybdenum concentrator located in southern Peru. In 2010 Ausenco was contracted to perform a feasibility study optimization review which resulted in an improved design with significantly increased throughput capacity at a minimal increase in capital cost. Construction began in 2012 with commercial operation commencing in May 2015. This paper outlines the process plant design as well as describing the plant’s major equipment selections, start-up and early operations experiences.IntroductionHudBay Mineral’s Constancia project is located at 4200 meters above sea level (masl) in southern Peru, approximately 630 km south-east of Lima, Peru. The property can be accessed by road from Cusco, Peru, (approximately 110 km to the north), or from Arequipa, Peru (approximately 215 km to the south). Matarani, accessed via Arequipa, is the closest port.Constancia is located within the Yauri-Andahuaylas metallogenic belt. The region contains several large copper-gold-molybdenum porphyry deposits such as Antapaccay (by Glencore) and Los Chancas (by Grupo Mexico), and copper skarn deposits such as Tintaya (by Glencore) and Las Bambas (by MMG). Constancia’s ore reserves contain copper and molybdenum with trace amounts of gold and silver.Ore is mined by an open-pit operation. The process plant recovers copper and molybdenum concentrates, storing tailings in a conventional tailings management facility. Infrastructure at the site includes a grid power supply (via a 70 km overhead transmission line from Tintaya), water supply, workshops and an accommodation camp. Mine life is 22 years.Site construction works began in 2012 with first copper concentrate produced in late 2014. The project was executed for approximately 1.75B$USD.Ausenco’s design approach focussed on developing a capital efficient copper molybdenum concentrator. Conventional methods designate a factor of safety, a deterministic number, to indicate the stability of a mine excavation. However, this deterministic description of excavation stability is frequently insufficient or inaccurate and, sometimes, misleading. Employing the probabilistic analysis to determine the likelihood of mine excavation failures will lead to a better understanding of ground control problems and result in more rigorous designs of the excavations. Based on the theory of probability, two approaches are taken in this study for the probabilistic analysis of excavation stability. The first one utilizes direct integrations for the estimation of failure probabilities of mine excavations. Due to the complexity of the integration, this approach can only be applied to solve relatively simple problems. In order to overcome the limitation of the direct integration method, the second approach employs the first-order second-moment approximation of the failure probabilities for more complex ground control problems. The probabilistic analysis offers a deeper insight into the uncertainty associated with the stability of mine excavations. The study indicates that the distributions of parameter values play a significant role in the mine excavation stability, which can not be disclosed by the conventional methods of stability analysis. Greater dispersiveness of the parameter values will lead to a different probability of failure, although the factor of safety estimated by conventional methods stays the same if the mean values of the parameters are constant. By taking consideration of the probabilistic distributions of the parameters, the probability model can provide more reliable designs of mine excavations.

Fifteen shots of three explosives with charge weights of 0.52, 1.1, 3.1, and 5.1 kilograms were fired in a pond to study the seismic effects of detonating explosives in water. Shock pressures and bubble periods were measured with pressure transducers in the water. Vibrations were measured on land in three orthogonal directions with particle velocity gages. Statistical tests indicated that a charge weight exponent of 0.43 best scaled the data. While shock pressures and bubble periods showed considerable differences in explosive performances, the amplitudes of ground vibrations showed less difference, and one prediction equation was therefore derived to estimate vibration amplitudes from all the explosives.

This article focuses on the appropriate application of subsurface investigation methods for transmission structures, which are typically designed to resist lateral rather than vertical loads. Currently, the three methods used most often for the subsurface investigation of transmission structures in the field are the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), the Cone Penetration Test (CPT), and the Flat Dilatometer Test (DMT). Each of these methods has advantages and disadvantages, and each is more applicable to some scenarios than to others. To gain a better understanding of these test methods and the implications of using them for various kinds of applications, a comparison study was conducted in the field in Maryland, for three boring locations. Each boring location was explored using each of the three tests as stated. The results of the tests and lessons learned are presented and compared, and these comparisons show that the three test methods agree on the majority of the findings. The results from each test method were also used to derive key parameters such as the soil friction angle for given foundation designs considered in order to establish a clear basis for comparison. Recommendations for performing transmission structure subsurface investigations are made in order to optimize the use of each method and thereby optimizing subsequent foundation designs. INTRODUCTION For overhead transmission structures, the most important structural requirement for determining the foundation design differs from the requirement for other structures such as buildings and bridges in accord with the conditions the transmission structures will need to withstand. In addition to the ability to bear a given vertical load consistent with its use, the foundation must bear lateral loads arising from wind and other weather conditions. The foundation types used most often for overhead transmission monopole structures include concrete drilled pier, vibratory caisson, and direct embedment. In order to determine an appropriate and even an optimum foundation design for any given set of conditions, an appropriate subsurface investigation method or approach is needed. Currently, the standard penetration test (SPT), the cone penetration test (CPT), and the flat dilatometer test (DMT) are the three most commonly used subsurface investigation methods.

An effective electrowinning process in hydrometallurgical industry requires fluoride levels in the base metal solution to be less than 10 mg/l. Selective removal of the fluoride ions from base solution is thus desired, if fluoride was added to control calcium and magnesium in the circuit. Consequently, adsorption of fluoride onto activated alumina was studied in a batch and a column set-up. The effects of base metal solution pH, temperature, initial concentration and flow rate on activated alumina performance were investigated in either a batch or column configuration. A two-level factorial experimental design was implemented in studying column dynamics. Results demonstrate that activated alumina is an effective adsorbent for selective removal of fluoride from base solution. In the batch operation, fluoride was removed to values below the maximum allowable concentration (10 mg/[l]) when pH was = 8. In the column adsorption step at 55°C and 600mg/[l] initial concentration, up to 16 bed volumes were processed before breakthrough level was reached. Desorption step using 1% sodium hydroxide solution achieved an elution of 8 bed volumes. The activated alumina (AA) had a capacity of 8.65 gF/[l]AA at the 10mgF/[l] fluoride breakthrough level during the column adsorption test. WITH the exception of the deposits of the Milburn Cement Co near Dunedin, Wilson's Portland Cement Co., on the Mahurangi River (a short distance north of Auckland), and those of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co., at Limestone Island, the cement. Tesources of New Zealand remain practically undeveloped. The Milburn Company utilizes a mixture of limestone and mud for the manufacture of cement, while Wilson's and the New Zealand Portland Cement companies both have the advantage of a natural cement stock which requires but small additions of highgrade limestone to give the mixture required. The plant and deposits of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co are located in Whangarei Harbour, some six miles from thetownship of Whangarei. The works and dwelling-houses are situated on Limestone Island, which, with an area of 92 acres, and rising to a height of 212 ft., supplies the bulk of the raw material required. In addition to the island, the company possesses a high-grade limestone area of, roughly, four acres, situated on the mainland, 11 miles to the south.
