This Bureau of Mines report and its companion report (Information Circular 9142) have been prepared to assist in the preparation of prefeasibility type estimates for capital and operating costs of beneficiation of various types of mineral occurrences using current technology. The handbook provides a convenient costing procedure based on the summation of the costs for the unit processes required in any particular mining or mineral processing operation. The costing handbook consists of a series of costing sections, each corresponding to a specific mineral processing unit process. Contained within each section is the methodology to estimate either the capital or operating cost for that unit process. The unit process sections may be used to generate, in January 1984 dollars, costs through the use of either costing curves or formulae representing the prevailing technology. The mineral processing handbook includes individual cost estimation sections for unit operations associated with comminution, beneficiation, solid-liquid separation, hydrometallurgy, and special applications as well as infrastructure and plant general and administrative costs. When using this system for estimating cost data for a mineral processing facility or for checking or verifying processing costs from an existing facility, a minimum amount of background information is necessary.

The ore, as sent to the sulphide mill, is a mixture, in varying proportions, of oxidized ore from above the 450-ft. level and sulphide ore from above and below (to date mainly from above) that level. The oxidized ore consists essentially of quartz, with varying amounts of kaolin and clayey material which passes into the slime and, in excess, creates a serious problem in settling. Pyrite may be present in small amounts. The gold is free and extremely fine.The ore, classed as sulphide, consists of pyritic material in a quartz gangue. The sulphides have been exposed to weathering, leaching by descending solutions and attack by ascending gases and actual burning. The alteration products occur in widely varying proportions and this variation adds to the difficulties in settling and control of grinding and flotation.Copper Minerals.-Chalcopyrite is the principal copperbearing mineral with smaller and varying amounts of covellite, which is sometimes associated with chalcocite, both these minerals being apparently of secondary origin.Examination of tailing by Dr. Stillwell has revealed all stages between clean chalcopyrite, chalcopyrite tinged with covellite, covellite with residual cores of chalcopyrite and clean covellite.The chalcopyrite is free floating, very few particles of clean chalcopyrite being observed in the tailing from granular flotation. "The development of stirred milling technology has proven to be an enabling technology in fine grained metallic deposits. The increased grinding efficiency allows for the economic size reduction required to produce saleable concentrates. This improvement has opened the door to retreatment projects such as reprocessing of historic gold mine tailings. Recently a VXP2500 stirred mill was installed at Casmyn Mining Zimbabwe Turk mine to allow the reprocessing of historic mine tailings. After commissioning, an extensive joint research project between Casmyn and FLSmidth Minerals was conducted to optimize the performance of the mill. This paper outlines the challenges encountered in the optimization program and the outcomes from the joint research project.INTRODUCTION The development of stirred mills has opened up many new opportunities to recover valuable minerals from refractory ores. Stirred mills have already been reported as an enabling technology for the processing of fine grained ores in lead/zinc applications (Pease, Young and Curry, 2005). Historically, conventional ball mills were unable to economically grind material fine enough to produce the required recovery or concentrate grade. This often resulted in the loss of valuable materials to the final plant tailings. The advent of stirred milling has now provided an opportunity which has both economic and environmental benefits, the reprocessing of historic mine tailings. Many tailings stockpiles now contain economic concentrations of gold because of the ability of stirred mills to efficiently and economically grind the tailings to liberation sizes. The primary advantage of reprocessing historic tailings is very low cost processing. Recovering the tailings is usually as simple as pumping the material into the reprocessing circuit. The disadvantage of reprocessing tailings is the low feed grade and greater difficulty in recovery valuable minerals at the same size distribution. The material has already been previously processed so fresh surface area or an increase in metal exposure is required. These are both provided by regrinding the tailings material."

In blasting large tonnages of ore or material, the economy of the operation 'depends mainly on the mine manager's judgment in placing the holes to the best possible advantage and in determining the most effective size of hole to suit the conditions and requirements.The placing of holes is often looked upon as a problem involving so many uncertain factors that the application of simple mathematics is impossible. The uncertain factors arise when dealing with strata of different character, in hardness toughness and resistance to shearing.A study of the practice at many mines where all types of strata from hard ore to relatively soft overburden, and even coal, is being mined, suggests that the problem is not as complex as generally believed. There is, without doubt, some uniformity in the amount of burden given to holes of equivalent dimensions, regardless of the material being mined. The reason is simple. With too great a burden hard rock will not break out and soft rock will "bull". The nature of the strata is taken care of by the strength, quantity and distribution of the explosive charge and, to some extent, the spacing of the holes.It is because burdens are uniform in all classes of strata met with in mining, that a formula can be used to design blast hole layouts.The formula introduced in this paper is empirical as it is based on prevailing practice. It has been tested and proved remarkably accurate against every example available to the writer. Many thousands of blast holes, at many different mines, are represented by the examples given in the attached tables; to give further examples would only mean, unnecessary repetition. The paper point out the Galvanox process developed at the University of British to leach concentrates containing copper sulfide mixtures, mainly chalcopyrite. This patented process is based primarily on the galvanic interaction between chalcopyrite and pyrite, which allows chalcopyrite to be leached preferentially over pyrite. Under the correct process conditions, near-complete extraction of copper can be reached typically within twelve hours. This study will also show that this process is suitable to treat low grade copper concentrates (bulk concentrates) taking advantage of the selectively of chalcopyrite over pyrite, and the use of pyrite as a catalyst.

A micro-scale investigation was carried out by applying atomic force microscopy (AFM) to study in situ the adsorption of various collectors, i.e., oleic acid, octanohydroxamic acid (HA), and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), on bastnaesite in aqueous solutions. The obtained AFM images show that the surface morphology of bastnaesite changes greatly after it comes into contact with the solutions of the collectors, suggesting that all these collectors can effectively adsorb onto bastnaesite. Increasing temperature can facilitate the adsorption of oleic acid onto bastnaesite. Results from attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) also show that all of these collectors adsorb strongly onto bastnaesite, with strong absorbance spectra being detected. The ATR-FTIR results confirm those obtained by AFM. In general, hydroxamic acid collectors (HA and SHA) adsorb onto bastnaesite mainly in the form of insoluble metal hydroxamate. This specific adsorption mechanism explains that a high selectivity with a moderate collectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of bastnaesite.

The Bureau of Mines investigated extraction of aluminum from aluminum-silicon alloys as a means of utilizing domestic aluminum silicate ores for aluminum production. Aluminum was extracted from aluminum-silicon alloys by electrolysis in molten electrolytes of NaCl-KCI-AIC13 and NaCl-KCI-AIF3 in a laboratory-scale cell. Six alloys with aluminum contents ranging from 20 to 87 percent aluminum were tested, and aluminum products of primary grade or better were obtained. More than 80 percent of the aluminum was recovered with current efficiencies as high as 91 percent. Recovery of a metallurgical-grade silicon product from the anode residue by an acid leaching procedure was possible with the 50-50 and 65-35 Al-Si alloys.

NIOSH researchers conducted a study to compare seat designs on underground coal mine haulage vehicles. The objective of the study was to support prior findings that NIOSH-designed seats, which incorporated ergonomic design features (e.g., viscoelastic foam padding and low-back support), are improved designs. Based on measured levels of vehicle jarring/jolting and perceived discomfort, researchers evaluated four different designs - two in-use and two NIOSH-developed, ergonomic designs. Researchers collected data using a short questionnaire, a linear, visual analog scale, and accelerometers with a data recorder. Results showed that vehicle operators favored the NIOSH seats with added adjustability, low-back support, and improved seat padding over the existing seats. In addition, the measurements indicated all NIOSH seats performed better than the existing seat, under the no-load (worse of two) conditions, in reducing peak acceleration, crest factor, and RMS acceleration. The authors summarize the data collected and operator preferences for seat designs and different foam padding arrangements.

"This paper describes how to make advanced control choices when difficult processes need improvement. The decision-making process involves choosing between a rules-based approach and a model-based approach as well as weighing benefits and drawbacks, complexity and simplicity, investment and results. This paper will present briefly each solution: basic control, advanced regulatory control, model predictive control, and expert systems such as fuzzy logic controllers and neural networks. The article then proposes a decision tree for selecting the most appropriate approach. A table will compare usage, development, commissioning, maintenance and lifecycle costs for each approach. Finally, conclusions and suggestions will summarize the methodology.INTRODUCTION Advanced process control (APC) is a popular topic. How can one decide whether advanced control should be added to an existing system? Advanced control is used to improve performance, stabilize production, handle constraints, protect equipment and manage grade changes. Most plants use feedback controllers, usually PID (proportional, integral, derivative) controllers. It is common to develop special control schemes to handle more complex processes. In classic PID process control, a controller brings a single value close to a set point using a single manipulated variable. On the other hand, APC brings several values close to optimal targets simultaneously using several manipulated variables. APC's four main strategies are advanced regulatory control, model predictive control (MPC), fuzzy logic and neural networks. Simple solutions are always preferred. Complexity will be increased if performances (production, quality, etc.) are below par. Profitability analyses should be conducted to validate project viability. Needs—not trends—should dictate choices! Before increasing complexity, it is important to define needs, goals, technical support, budget, etc. All these approaches entail strengths and weaknesses. Building a project based on technology rather than needs spells trouble."

Wattle Gully Gold Mines N.L. of Chewton, Victoria, has decided to replace its present battery plant by a new mill to treat a free milling gold ore, after fine grinding, by concentrating coarse gold in a jig concentrate for amalgamation, and fine free gold and auriferous sulphides in a flotation concentrate for cyanidation. This paper outlines the economic justification and advantages of this step. In a review of the present position at the mine, a history of the company is followed by a description of the ore and its occurrence.Present treatment practice in two separate battery plants is described. Treatment tailings assay 1 dwt/ton gold and a substantial part of this gold is finer than 200 mesh.Experimental work showing how recovery may be improved is discussed and alternative methods of concentrating coarse gold mentioned. It is decided that the most suitable method for recovering gold from the ore is by jig concentration plus flotation.The merits of various flowsheets incorporating these techniques in the existing plant and in a new plant are assessed. It is concluded that there is no advantage in extending or converting the existing two battery plants, and it would be more economical and satisfactory to build a new plant.An economic study shows that for a capital expenditure of £120,000 a new plant could be erected to treat 70,000 tons p.a., working a 5-day week, and return an additional 14.2/- per ton, or £50,000 p.a., in revenue over the existing plant. It is estimated the plant cost can therefore be recouped out of savings inside three years. Longwall recovery under weak roof conditions could have considerable delay if the immediate roof is weak and deteriorates during screening. A pre-driven longwall recovery room is a feasible solution to minimize the impact of longwall move on production. In this longwall recovery project, a 16-ft recovery room was pre-driven to cover screening, and the shearer cut another 16 ft outby to reach the final recovery line. The pre-driven recovery room was carefully monitored as the face was approaching it. The longwall face operated very well as it cut into the recovery room. The recovery process took about 13 days, and considerable time was saved compared with the previous panel. The support in pre-driven recovery room was designed to handle both front abutment pressure and weak immediate roof conditions. Pumpable standing support was used to support the cantilevered roof as the fender pillar narrowed and collapsed when the face cut into the recovery room. To ensure the stability of the recovery room, 3-D computer modeling was used to evaluate the support system. Abutment pressure, critical fender pillar width, bolting system, pumpable cribs and shield support were considered in the model. The recovery room was carefully monitored during longwall recovery. Roof-to-floor convergence and crib convergence were recorded every shift as the longwall face was approaching the recovery room. Roof, floor and pillar activities and crib performance were also observed as the face cut into the recovery room. This paper presents the support design for the recovery room, evaluation of the support system through computer modeling, and details of the monitoring results.

"The Canadian mining industry faces the prospects of a severe shortage of graduate mining engineers over the next decade. This arises from three factors: first, a growth in industrial activity; second, the average age of company engineering and management staff; and third, the reduced number of students in engineering faculties around the world. This paper aims to identify the critical factors underlying the trend of inadequate recruitment into higher education for mining and to examine means of alleviating the problem.This paper is based upon surveys of potential and current students and graduate mining engineers from four mining schools. BHP's two million tonne per annum nominal capacity Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant at Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia is based on FINMET¦¦ direct reduction technology. The FINMET¦¦ process produces direct reduced iron (DRI) by reacting fine iron ore with reformed natural gas in a series of fluid bed reactors and then hot briquetting this DRI into dense, high quality iron briquettes. The Port Hedland HBI project represents a major investment in the chemical processing of Australian minerals to higher value products prior to export to Asian markets. This paper describes the FINMET" process and technical aspects of the high-quality HBI product, and provides an update of the current status of the project.

Arizona construction aggregate industry remains in the crosshairs of public debate, caught between the need for aggregate-based building materials and alternative, high-value land-uses. To better manage lands and improve land-use decisions, the Arizona State Land Department has need for a system to assess potential aggregate resources on State Trust lands, and assign dollar values accordingly. Thereafter aggregate values can be compared to residential, commercial, agricultural, recreational, and habitat values -- in a determination of highest and best land-use.

The Bosphorus Rail Tunnel Project, located in Istanbul, Turkey, aims to provide a Euro-Asian rail link, via an immersed tube tunnel crossing the Bosphorus Strait, along which will run all commuter, freight and intercity passenger trains of Turkish State Railways (TCDD), as well as the future extension to the European rail network. The total length of upgrading and new railway construction will be approximately 76 km. The main structures include the immersed tube tunnel; mechanised shield tunnels; new Austrian tunnelling method (NATM) tunnels; cut-and-cover, at-grade and retained-cut/fill structures; and some service structures. This paper discusses Phase 1 implementation of the project, one of the major transportation infrastructure projects in the world today, whose varied structures present stimulating engineering and construction challenges.

This paper summarises work undertaken to date as part of an investigation into the mineral resources of the proposedNorth West South Island National Park. The area covered by the proposed national park is underlain by many rock types that have undergone a long and complex history of evolution which has endowed it with some of the best potential for a wide range of different minerals in New Zealand. Many of these minerals occur only in this area or in Fiordland National Park.   The first gold-rush in the area occurred in 1856 and followed the discovery of payable gold at Lightbands Gully, south of Collingwood. The miners first focused on the alluvial deposits but soon shifted attention to lode potential. The total historical gold production for the area may be over 400 000 oz (NZ$250 - NZ$295.6 M at 1993 prices).   In addition to gold, a wide range of other minerals have been reported from the area including molybdenum, copper, nickel, zinc, silver, bismuth, stibnite, lead and antimony. The Onekaka iron-ore deposits have produced small tonnages of ochre and iron-ore at various times. Tungsten, platinoids and other metals have been. given only minor attention. The diverse geology of the Northwest Nelson has resulted in the occurrence of many industrial minerals which have been exploited in generally small-scale operations. Aggregate, chrysotile asbestos, clay, dolomite, marble, limestone, dimension stone, rip-rap, talc-magnesite and wollastonite have all been produced.

Mining steeply dipping coal seams is a difficult task in the mining industry. Prior to 1996, fully mechanized longwall mining methods along the seam strike direction were tried in China and other countries. Due to its larger coal reserve in steep seams, China made more but still limited progresses on mining in such seams than the other major coal-mining countries. In the last two decades, accelerated research efforts have been made to improve the mining technology in steeply dipping coal seams. Based on these works, a dynamic model of ?R-S-F? system under asymmetrical constrains in mining steep seam is established and the theory of strata control and hazard prevention begin to be formed. The key technologies for mining steep coal seams include: global and regional strata control methods in longwall face, methods for the longwall face machines to sustain static and dynamic loads, and flexible protection technology. These theory and technologies have been successfully applied to mining of steep coal seams of varying thickness and hardness, with hard and soft roof and floor, and with high potential of spontaneous combustion in China. In the recent years, the technology has been introduced to Russia, India, Uzbekistan and other countries where steep coal seams are mined.
