Draglines are massive machines extensively utilized in opencast mines for overburden stripping. The demanding working environment induces fractures, wear and tear, and fatigue failures in dragline components and eventuates in extended maintenance, lengthy downtimes, and loss of production. The bucket is the main source of external loads on the machinery, since interactions with ground materials take place in this region. This study aims to develop a generic finite element model of the stress on an operating bucket. This entails (i) three-dimensional modelling of a dragline bucket, (ii) analytical estimation of resistive forces in the bucket movement, (iii) three-dimensional simulation of the moving bucket using finite element analysis (FEA), and (iv) sensitivity analysis to examine the effect of formation characteristics on stress variation. Simulation results imply that the drag hitch and digging teeth are the elements of the bucket that are most prone to failure. In addition, sensitivity analysis indicates that internal friction angle of the formation is the dominant parameter leading fluctuations in stress values. Changes in stress level are least influenced by formation density.

Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. FOR many years past it has been the practice at the Bairnsdale School of Mines to treat any parcels of auriferous concentrates sent in from the surrounding district by roasting them in a handworked reverberatory, and then chlorinating or cyaniding the product. According to Donald CIark, who has done a large amount of work on these ores, the results obtained were fairly satisfactory extractions of over 90 per cent being claimed. With some modifications, the method has been very generally adopted, not only in Gippsland but throughout Victoria. It is, however, difficult to get exact information as to the extractions actually obtained, and unfortunately no records of working results have been kept at the Bairnsdale School of Mines.Having treated several lots of ore by this method during 1907 and 1908 with unsatisfactory results, the writers thought it desirable to make a detailed investigation on some particular ore, both in the laboratory and on a working scale. The ore selectedwas a parcel of low-grade concentrates from Stirling, a small mining field situated about forty miles to the east of Bairnsdale. This ore was chosen chiefly on account of the heavy and inexplicable volatilization loss which took place even on roasting with the greatest care; the loss amounting to between 10 and 15 per cent. The production of metallic titanium and titanium-rich alloys in forms useful to the engineer involves the use of certain techniques not usually necessary in fabricating the commoner metals and alloys. However, not all stages in the handling and shaping of titanium-base materials require the application of unfamiliar methods. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate where the well-known techniques are applicable as well as to outline the unusual operations which are necessitated by certain chemical characteristics of titanium.In brief, the characteristics just mentioned are manifestations of the very great reactivity of titanium, especially at elevated temperatures. Liquid titanium burns vigorously when brought into contact with air. It also reacts with practically all refractories, causing damage to the latter as well as undesirable contamination of the metal. Even solid titanium undergoes serious superficial contamination when heated above 800°C. in air for more than a few minutes. In addition to an oxide skin being formed, oxygen enters into solid solution in the surface of the metal causing the latter to become hardened and eventually embrittled.Up to date, titanium has been made only on a pilot plant scale by methods which produce a spongy or powdered product. Refractory problems have prevented the development of chemical reduction methods for making titanium in the form of a liquid pool from which ingots of useful size could be cast. At the Orieco mine quartz veins carrying sulphides were localized in parts of an extensive fault zone in the Mathinna Beds during late Middle Palaeozoic mineralization.These deposits were subsequently exposed, and oxidation of the sulphides by percolating groundwaters resulted in the formation of gossans at the surface, and replacement close to the permanent water table of the more soluble sulphides by copper sulphides (chalcocite, coveIlite). A restricted zone containing copper oxides (cuprite, tenorite), copper carbonates (malachite, azurite), iron arsenates (scorodite, pharmacosiderite) and possibly rare copper sulphates occurred above the water table.The renewed oxidation of these deposits following mine development has been facilitated by the ready circulation of air and water combined with the formation of large free surfaces ideal for evaporation of aqueous solutions. Under these new conditions of high initial sulphate concentration, low pH, and relatively high Eh, the previously formed mineral assemblage is unstable and numerous Cu (Fe,Zn)-sulphates and Fe (Cu,Pb)-arsenates are presently forming in fractures in the fault zone and on the adit and stope surfaces for some considerable distance from the Sulphide-rich ore shoots. The observed spatial sequence of the major sulphates with respect to the sulphide-rich zones (Le. chalcanthite-antleritebrochantite and langite) is consistent with decreasing sulphate concentration and increasing pH away from the oxidizing sulphides.

Electrochemical, chemical, and image analysis techniques were utilized together with statistical analysis methods to determine the effect of various anode impurities on copper electrorefining performance. Results indicate that arsenic is a beneficial anode impurity. Anode lead and sulfur are shown to decrease electrorefining performance. Specific emphasis is given to the influence of individual elements on current efficiency, slime particle generation, and cell voltage parameters.

"Antiscalants were evaluated for control of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in gold processing applications. Under severely supersaturated conditions, 100 percent inhibition was achieved with 30 ppm antiscalant. Laboratory and field testing established that an antiscalant could both inhibit scale buildup and remove an estimated 0.5 kg/m2 per annum of pre-existing scale. A program was developed to control CaCO3 at a gold mill experiencing severe scale buildup. Annual accumulation of as much as 3 cm of scale in process piping was reduced to unmeasureable levels when 10 ppm antiscalant was applied. No scale-related upsets in mill operation occurred during a five-month trial period.INTRODUCTION Inorganic mineral scale is a crystalline deposit that forms when dissolved mineral constituents exceed the solubility of the respective mineral phase. Formation of mineral scale adversely affects a wide range of industries and is of particular interest in mining and metals processing. Scale affects numerous stages of metal extraction processes. Restricted flow in piping, nozzles, valves, screens, pumps and other components used to transport mineral slurries, metal concentrates, and tailings as well as scale in millwater and thickener overflow circuits are primary concerns (Alfano & Boffardi, 1994). Heap leaching, comminuation, flotation, vat leaching, carbon adsorption, and heat exchangers as well as oxidation steps used in processing sulfidic ores are among key unit operations that may be adversely affected (Simmons & Gathje, 2003). Antiscalant chemicals are designed to prevent formation and growth of mineral scales such as CaCO3. These chemicals, which include two primary classes – phosphonates and anionic carboxylate polymers and copolymers - are added to the gold processing stream at low parts-per-million (ppm) concentrations to interfere with nucleation and growth of scale forming crystals and to disperse fine particulate material. Application points may be located throughout the gold extraction process. Evaluation of the performance of antiscalants plays a critical role in determining the best product for a specific application. Performance evaluations include laboratory testing, pilot scale studies, in-plant trials, and ongoing performance monitoring during mill operation."

"Campbell mines has been in operation since 1948. Part of the process consists of roasting of a flotation concentrate which contains arsenopyrite.At present operation level the milling rate averages about 850 t.p.d. and about 48 t.p.d. of concentrate is roasted. The gas emissions at present contain between 3 and 3.5 t.p.d. of arsenic trioxide, about2 - 2.5 t.p.d. of particulate matter and between 19 - 25 t.p.d. of sulphur dioxide. The particulate is extremely fine calcine dust and it assays about 4 oz. Of gold per ton.Until 1974 the gas was discharged untreated through a 125' stack.UntreatedThe decision was made in 1972 to erect a gas treatment plant, construction ran through 1973 and operation began in 1974. The cost of the installation was about 1.3 million dollars.On investigation the process technology, it was apparent that the plant operated by giant Yellowknife for the same purpose was the model we should study. I would like to acknowledge the fine cooperation we had from giant, the plant that emerged is very similar to theirs and incorporates some improvements suggested by them and based on their operating experience.The plant is designed to remove arsenic and solid dust and it has no provisions to remove sulphur dioxide.We depend upon the 125' stack to assure adequate dilution. Because of the nearby airport the stack cannot exceed 125'. A stack burner is provided that can ""y used to heat the stack gas and carry it higher into the atmosphere when there is an inversion condition.The removal of arsenic from hot gas is fairly simple. The sublimation point is about 425°f, a few degrees above this point the arsenic is a gas and a few degrees below it condenses into a solid form. The arsenic could have been removed by simply dropping the temperature below the condensation point and collecting all the solids in a baghouse. This would have removed the possibility of recovering the gold in the calcine dust and would have produced an impure and more bulky arsenic material to be placed in safe storage. The decision was made to collect the solid dust in a hot electrostatic precipitator operating above the sublimation point and subsequently lower the temperature below the condensation point and collect the arsenic in a baghouse."

This paper presents the result of the analysis of strain-dependent concrete modulus from full-scale static axial compression load tests conducted on more than 200 instrumented cast-in-place barrettes and bored piles over the past 12 years, covering commonly adopted grades of concrete for heavy foundation construction in Malaysia and Singapore. The concrete modulus values, Ec, analysed were directly back-calculated from the material of the instrumented test piles by means of placing a layer of vibrating wire strain gauges near the pile head region. The best fit curve for back-calculated concrete secant modulus versus measured axial strain follows non-linear behaviour for both categories of test pile samples analysed. The result of the analysis seems to suggest that using average constant modulus value would generally lead to a significant error in load distribution computation, particularly at high stresses region.

The suggested new method for control of geomechanical state of undermined rock mass ensures, as a safety measure for the earth surface protection, the decrease of deformations by 2,5 - 10 times in mining the single seam, and by 1,5 - 5 times - in mining bed series, i. e. approximately within the seam ranges as in the application of full packing with various compressive properties or partial extraction of resources over the area with different coefficients of extraction. It should be noted that this new method has the following advantages o\w rhr. conventional methods: a) the decrease of the packing area and packing works volume by 2 - 4 fold including the operating and productive expenses; b) the elimination of mineral losses due to the increase of extraction coefficient up to 100 5%; c) rock utilization from workings drivage by its placing in the mined - out space. Introduction The Fortitude deposit is located in Nevada's Battle Mountain mining district in the central Great Basin region of the Basin and Range province of the western US. The deposit is at Copper Canyon in the southernmost portion of the district, about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain (Fig. 1). Mining activity in the district began in 1866 (Roberts and Arnold, 1965). Base and precious metals were mined by underground methods intermittently until 1955. Placer gold was first discovered at Copper Canyon in 1912. Moderate scale dredging of alluvial gravel at the mouth of Copper Canyon was conducted by the Natomas Co. from 1944 to 1955 (Johnson, 1973). In 1967, Duval Corp. began large scale open-pit copper mining. (Sayers, Tippett, and Fields, 1968). Copper prices decreased and precious metals prices increased in the mid-1970s so Duval's exploration efforts at Copper Canyon shifted to precious metals. These exploration efforts resulted in the discovery of the Tomboy-Minnie deposits and shortly afterward, the Northeast Extension deposit at Copper Canyon (Blake, Wotruba, and Theodore, 1984; Fig. 2). The Fortitude deposit was discovered in late 1980, after Duval had proceeded with precious metals production at Copper Canyon. Converting the existing plant facilities at Copper Canyon to a precious metals recovery system was completed in 1978 (Jackson, 1982). Production from the Tomboy-Minnie deposits began in early 1979. Precious metals production moved to the Northeast Extension deposit in 1982. In late 1984, after three years of preproduction stripping and mining of the Upper Fortitude ore zone, production from the higher grade Lower Fortitude ore zone began. Currently, Battle Mountain Gold Co. operates the Fortitude deposit. Production from the Battle Mountain mining district before 1967 included 4.6 t (150,000 oz) of gold, 65.3 t (2.1 million oz) of silver, 13.6 kt (15,000 st) of copper, 4.5 kt (5,000 st) of lead, and 13.6 kt (15,000 st) of zinc (Roberts and Arnold, 1965). At the time of Duval's 1967 start-up, ore reserves at Copper Canyon included 12.6 Mt (14 million st) in the East ore body and another 3.6 Mt (4 million st) in the West ore body. Both had average grades of 0.79% copper, 16.1 g/t (0.47 oz per st) silver and 0.86 g/t (0.025 oz per st) gold (Blake et al., 1984). The Tomboy-Minnie deposits collectively contained 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st) of ore grading 3.09 g/t (0.09 oz per st) gold and 9.6 g/t (0.28 oz per st) silver. The Northeast Extension reserves were identified as 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of ore with an average grade of 2.9 g/t (0.085 oz per st) gold and 5.1 g/t (0.15 oz per st) silver. Initial total reserve estimates for the Fortitude deposit were 14.5 Mt (16 million st) grading 5.14 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold and 29.8 g/t (0.87 oz per st) silver (Jackson, 1982). Therefore, before large scale mining, the Copper Canyon area contained a minimum of 102.6 t (3.3 million oz) of gold and 541 t (17.4 million oz) of silver as mineable reserves. The Fortitude deposit reserves as of Jan. 1, 1985 were 10.6 Mt (11 million st) grading at 5.28 g/t (0.154 oz per st) gold and 28.5 g/t (0.83 oz per st) silver. Faults under high rock cover represent some of the most severe ground conditions a Tunneler can encounter. High ground water pressures and flows are usually associated with mountain faults. Ground behavior can range from blocky ground to flowing sands and squeezing clays. Sticking a IBM within a fault zone for many weeks, with the disastrous financial consequences, is still a common occurrence. Interpreting the geology and detecting the location of a fault prior to penetrating it is a fundamental step to successful tunneling. Ground water control through predraining or pre-grouting is the second fundamental step. This paper discusses techniques applied for detecting and crossing mountainous fault zones through the use of case histories across the globe.

Based upon the previous work of Norman & Loeb, a method was used to assess the comparative wearing properties of ten different alloys being used, or being considered for use, as mill liners and grinding media at Mount Isa, The materials to be tested were obtained in the form of large diameter balls, and were run, along with the regular ball charge, in a large ball mill operating under normal grinding conditions. At selected intervals, the test balls were removed from the mill, weighed and identified, and their relative wear rates determined.INTRODUCTIONInformation in metallurgical journals, from local iron and steel foundries, and from various metal promotional organizations has suggested that the various alloy compositions available should be examined and assessed for possible use as milllfners and grinding media.Previous attempts at evaluation of recommended materials for these applications elsewhere, have usually involved the purchase of large quantities of grinding balls or complete mill liner sets, requiring running periods of up to two years or more. As well as being both a costly and lengthy procedure, the information obtained may be of little significance, due to changes in milling practice, and ore characteristics during the period of operation.To overcome these difficuities, a method was adopted based on the short time wear rate test recommended by Norman & Loeb (1949) and Norman (1957) in which all the materialsunder consideration are ·subjected·concurrently to the conditions of service.Previous calculations of wear rates have been dependent1. Eminent domain overview Eminent domain is the power of the Government or a municipality to take property for public use without the consent or acceptance of the owner. Typically, the agency taking the prop¬erty will make an offer, hoping the owner will immediately accept and allow work to begin. If a mutual resolution regard¬ing its value cannot be reached, how¬ever, the municipality will institute a condemnation action in court seeking possion of the property. This is when the problems begin. The power of the Government to take the subject property is limited by Federal and state constitu¬tional requirements to pay "just com¬pensation" for the property. The exact nature of an owner's prop¬erty has been the subject of much debate and discussion. It is generally under¬stood, though, that property is consid¬ered to be "every kind of right or inter¬est, capable of being enjoyed and recog¬nized as such, upon which it is practi¬cable to place a money value" (US vs. 53 114 Acres of Land). A taking, for condemnation purposes, is considered to occur whenever there is a substantial interference with the free use and enjoyment of the property. Rarely is the necessity for the taking ever challenged and more rarely is the taking ever successfully challenged. When a taking occurs, it is not only the fee owner who is entitled to compen¬sation. Every person holding an interest in the subject property will be recog¬nized. Thus, all persons who at the time of taking have a compensable interest in the property will be made parties to the case (Swanson vs. US). Minerals, like all other interests in land, are recognized as property rights, giving the owner the power to dispose of them as he or she sees fit. Thus, the only remaining considera¬tion is only "just compensation." Ex¬actly what "just compensation" is has been difficult to define. Generally, it is that amount of money that will "put the person in as good a position as the per¬son would have been in had the taking not occurred." The owner must not be forced to sacrifice or suffer by receiving less than full and fair value for the prop¬erty. Every element that effects the value of the land and that would influence a purchaser must be evaluated. Courts have employed a variety of techniques to determine just compensa¬tion but have generally relied on market value as the standard for measuring compensation to the owner. The deter¬mination of market value is based on sales, income, costs, and use. These factors have been employed in various ways but can be summed up as: -The highest estimated monetary price the property will bring if exposed for sale in the open market with a reason¬able amount of time allowed to find a purchaser who is buying with knowl¬edge of all the uses and purposes to which it is adapted and for which it is capable of being used. • The amount the property would bring if it were offered for sale by one who desired, but was not obliged, to sell, and was bought by one who was willing, but not obliged to buy. • What the property would bring in the hands of a prudent seller, at liberty to fix the time and conditions of sale. • What the property would sell for in negotiations resulting in sale between an owner willing, but not obliged to sell, and a buyer willing, but not obliged to buy. • What the property would be rea¬sonably worth on the market for a cash price, allowing a reasonable time to affect a sale. (Michigan Standard Jury Instructions). Special consideration regarding mar¬ket value is given when the taking is only partial, rather than complete. An example of this partial taking is when a state highway cuts across the northern half of a parcel of property, leaving the rest behind for the owner. A variety of problems can be immediately seen. In a partial taking, the owner is permitted to recover not only for the property taken, but also for any loss in the value of the remaining property. The measure of compensation for partial taking purposes is generally the difference between the market value of the entire parcel before the taking, and the market value of what is left of the parcel after the taking (Michigan Stan¬dard Jury Instructions). Determining the partial taking value for mineral bear¬ing lands is the difficult issue.

Anomalous geologic or stress-induced conditions can create a hazardous working environment for underground miners. Seismic attenuation tomography provides a valuable tool for understanding static and dynamic conditions induced by mining. As a longwall shearer cuts coal, it generates seismic energy. As this energy travels through the rock mass it is attenuated in a manner proportional to the degree of fracturing of the rock mass. By calculating this attenuation at specific locations underground, the degree of fracturing of the rock mass, and hence the relative stress state or material properties can be inferred. The goal of this work has been to create a tool which can be easily used by the mining industry to obtain information about the distribution of stress concentrations or material properties across a broad area in advance of mining.

Stratiform lead-zinc mineralization at the Pegmont prospect occurs as a 4-6 m thick body interbedded within arkose, schist, amphibolite, and pegmatite of the Kuridala Formation in the Eastern Belt of the Lower Proterozoic of northwest Queensland.The overall structure of the body is that of a strongly crumpled east-dipping sheet. In detail it is subjected to complex and irregular deformation.Gossaneous outcrops of the mineralised body are anomalous in Pb-Zn-Ag content and have been traced, discontinuously, over about 36 km2 in a NNE-trending belt.Below the zone of oxidation, which reaches 25-40 m below the surface, the primary sulphides are galena, sphalerite, and pyrite.Drilling on a 2 km2 area near the discovery outcrops indicates fairly uniform grades of lead and zinc.Changes in thickness of the mineralised body are gradual.

Support design in jointed or blocky rock masses is often approached by the use of either 'rules of thumb', rock mass classification systems such as the Q-system (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) or RMR (Bieniawski, 1973) or conventional wedge analysis. Generally, this requires that a number of key simplifying assumptions are made and the support system is designed to cater for either a mean, most likely, or worst case scenario depending on the risk tolerance. The design block size is often a major uncertainty and often a worst case block size based on excavation span is used. Thompson and Windsor (2007) state that it is inappropriate to base support designs on the excavation size as these size blocks rarely occur if discontinuity trace lengths are considered. Probabilistic keyblock methods can be used to determine the most likely design block sizes. A methodology is presented whereby JBlock software (Estherhuizen, 1996) is used to estimate potential block sizes as part of the support design process. Using information such as the spacing, orientation and length of discontinuities, it is possible to simulate blocks in the walls of an excavation (Esterhuizen and Streuders, 1998). Keyblock analysis methods (Goodman and Shi, 1985) are used to evaluate whether blocks are removable and whether the chosen support will be sufficient to ensure stability. Data from two mines is used to demonstrate how probabilistic keyblock analyses can be used in support design. Discontinuity data was used to generate 10 000 removable blocks and the design block size statistics were determined. For one mine this information was used to scale blocks in a conventional. Unwedge analysis whilst for the other mine, the point estimate method (Harr, 1987) was applied. The choice of appropriate design acceptance criteria in terms of factor of safety and probability of failure is also considered.

The following paper deals with a method for the" Proximate Analysis" of Chloridized Ores, which are free from arsenic, antimony and lime. When these are present the analysis is rendered far more complicated, and many of the methods which I am about to describe could not be applied. Sufficient scope is therefore offered for discussing the analysis, when these metals are present, in a separate paper, which I hope to contribute at a future date.I am fully aware that this method is far from being perfect. No doubt many, modifications and improvements will suggest themselves to my readers, and I trust that this paper will be the means of giving a certain impetus to the study of Proximate Analysis which at the present time is practically dormant. For the benefit of my readers who are not initiated into the details of ordinary estimations, I have briefly described well known methods, which, however, will be found fully described in most text-books of analysis.
