"The Expert System implemented at the East-Malartic mill controls a copper flotation circuit while taking into account the profitability of the operation. Treating a copper gold ore, the flow sheet integrates a flotation step followed by cyanide leach circuit. The Expert System calculates the actual net smelter revenue of the flotation circuit, accounts for the operating cost of the cyanidation circuit and defines optimal metallurgical operating targets to optimize the overall economics. To be realistic, probability factors and circuit diagnostic analysis are integrated in the operating target selection. The Expert System has proved to be successful, robust and flexible. It resulted in a copper concentrate grade increase of 1% while maintaining recovery. The use of the expert system also gives plant personnel good training procedures and promotes interaction with mill operator.INTRODUCTIONThe East-Malartic mill is located close to the town of Malartic in North Western Quebec, Canada. The mill was first commissioned in 1938. The flowsheet at that time was a straight cyanidation circuit. The original mill operated in that mode up to the discovery of the Bousquet 2 orebody in 1989 which consisted of a massive copper sulphide ore averaging 0.7% copper and 7 g/mt of gold. Bousquet 2 ore processing required a mill retrofit. Grinding capacity, gravity and copper flotation circuits were inserted prior to the cyanidation circuit in order to achieve 3,200 mtpd capacity at expected recoveries.In 1993, control of the flotation circuit was deemed critical in order to maintain the flotation performance and to reduce cyanide consumption since the copper sulphide contained in the Bousquet 2 ore is a high cyanide consumer (50% bornite). (McMullen, 1999) As a result, the implementation of advanced control strategies in order to increase the metallurgical profitability of the plant and to reduce the operating variability between operators was the most rational alternative. In 1994, Corem was chosen to perform the plant audit and to write the first set of rules. The on-line control strategy was started up in 1995. In 1996 and 1997 the Expert System was shutdown because of an extreme change in the ore coming from the milling of Bousquet #1 ore and the departure of the projects engineer. In 1998, the system was restarted and the results were impressive. Furthermore in May of 2001 a patent was issued for the control strategy. (Breau, 2001)"

To insure domestic production of aluminium for, essential civilian and defense uses, the Government, under authority of the Defense Production Act of 1950, programed and promoted an aluminum-expansion program that will more than double the primary production capacity that existed in 1949. In view of this vastly increased production, the raw materials, with respect to both quantity and sources, are reviewed. The raw-material consumption pattern, the requirements during an expansion period when excess quantities of materials for starting up new facilities are consumed, and the probable requirements for production of 1.7 million tons per year of primary aluminum are discussed. The raw materials that presented the most difficult supply problems were bauxite, electrical power, and fluoride salts, and the supply pattern for these materials probably will undergo changes. A major part of the electrical energy for the increased capacity was to come from thermal generation, Jamaica-was to become a major source of bauxite, and synthetic fluoride salts were replacing natural cryolite in increasing quantities. Other raw-material requirements discussed are: Soda ash; lime, and limestone; starch; filter cloth; fuel; alumina; the carbonaceous materials, green and calcined petroleum coke, high-and low-temperature pitch and coke or anthracite; cryolite; aluminum fluoride; the materials going into production of synthetic fluorides, acid-grade fluorspar, and sulfuric acid; and labor. INTRODUCTION The raw materials for the aluminum industry that have received the most publicity are bauxite, the ore that supplies elemental aluminum, and electrical energy, the means by which aluminum oxide is reduced to metal. A number of other important materials are, however, required in large quantities in the production of primary aluminum metal.

In addition to fractures and joints, compositional factors and bedding influence the strength of clastic sedimentary rocks. Rock mass rating schemes must therefore consider all of these factors. In this paper, a rating scheme for clastic sediments based on geophysical measurements is described. Geo-physical logging allows an approximation of rock com-position to be obtained and an assessment of bedding frequency and laminations. Velocity measurements incorporate the effects of fracturing. The rating requires scores for the intact rock, bedding/cohesion, and defects. These are combined to yield a Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR). Determination of the GSR is objective and repeatable. GSR values are typically between 20 and 80 and can be related to the Coal Mine Roof Rating.

This paper reviews the main research themes over the quarter-century from 1980 to 2005, as well as some of the industrial developments that have shaped the research approach. The main topics have been the use of electrochemical sensors for equilibrium measurements, ilmenite smelting, steel processing, and reduction.

"The development of on-stream analyzers (OSA), such as those based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF), has been key to improve metallurgical performance of flotation processes. However, since these analyzers are shared between several streams, they typically provide grade measurements every about 10-15 minutes. In general, this frequency is too long compared to process dynamics and so, implementing an efficient feedback control strategy based on OSA can be difficult. In addition, due to the limited capacity of OSA systems, several important intermediate streams are not analysed, but could provide relevant information about the state of a flotation circuit.To overcome this problem, vision systems have been developed in the past to predict concentrate grade based on froth color – this could be very useful to control flotation performance between OSA measurements. However, applications reported in the literature typically use univariate summary statistics of the full red, blue, and green color distribution of froth images, while RGB images are truly multivariate. Although, in some cases, grade prediction was achieved with reasonable accuracy, one may, by using only summary statistics, miss important information about the state of the flotation process.This paper investigates the application of Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) concepts to flotation froth images. These techniques are based on multivariate statistical methods such as PCA and PLS, which have the ability to analyze large databases (such as digital images) and summarize the relevant information content of the data into a small number of latent variables, capturing the most important features of the images for concentrate grade prediction. The potential of application of these methods in the mineral processing industry is illustrated using a few industrial case studies."

"Today it is more important than ever to get the maximum possible return on capital invested in the processing industry. To this end the plant is often operated continuously and the choice of equipment is, consequently, extremely important.Screening spans a wide range of particle sizes and there are many different types of screening elements. The following types are common:1. Cloths and elements of rubber.2. Wire mesh screens with round wires.3. Wire mesh screens with profiled wires.4. Perforated steel plates.5. Elements of plastic.6. Gratings of steel beams.7. Gratings of iron rods.We would like to deal with two of these types namely rubber and briefly on plastics.We first introduced rubber screens to the Canadian Mining Industry in November, 1963. This stemmed from a conversation with the superintendant of one of Canada's largest screening plants containing 48 vibrating screens, with an average wire cloth life of 10 to 12 days. We contacted the manufacturer of rubber screen cloths who had supplied rubber screens to a mine in Northern Sweden for a 50,000 ton per day plant in 1951."

The majority of the tailings dam operations in South Africa will be required to comply with the new Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) within the next one to three years, depending on the dam classification and the requirements of the respective investors and insurers. With up to 72 auditable requirements, the implementation of the Standard needs careful planning and prioritization. This paper focuses on the practical steps to GISTM compliance for tailings facilities in operation in South Africa. The discussions are based on current practices, South African regulations, and industry standards requirements. The possible changes in dam classifications and the associated requirements are presented.

MinerSIM is an augmented reality system with integrated hypermedia that is suitable for training underground miners in the basics of using a jackleg drill to install rock bolts. While statistical evidence shows that rock bolting with such a drill has an inherent level of risk, it is conjectured that this can be mediated with adequate safety training outside of the actual mine environment using a variety of educational media including interactive three-dimensional images, games, animations, and videos to describe the mechanics of rock bolting and its principles. Ultimately, trainees will install rock bolts in an immersive environment mixed with real and virtual images generated via a gaming graphics engine. This paper will discuss considerations, implementation issues, and evaluation methodologies of the MinerSIM system.

Granulation of iron ore fines into robust granules is critical to successful sintering and blast furnace operations in iron and steelmaking. Iron and steelmakers desire iron ore granules with high strength, uniform size distribution and low fuel consumption to enhance efficient sintering operation. Unlike hematite ore, magnetite concentrates do not granulate easily at low binder dosage to yield coarser granules due to the absence of nucleus particles. This motivates the present study to harness the complementary properties of hematite ore to enhance granulation of magnetite concentrates via blending. The current state-of-the-art in hematite and magnetite blend granulation is reviewed, along with granule property limitations. The mining industry in Colorado faces the same problems the industry faces throughout the United States and the world — record low commodity prices and increasing regulatory and environmental restrictions that seemed designed to curtail mining activities. Despite those obstacles, the mining industry in Colorado still contributes about $8 billion annually to the state’s economy in the form of base and precious metals, industrial minerals, coal and associated service businesses and jobs. So the 300 attendees at the102nd National Western Mining Conference felt reason-ably positive about the industry in their state. The meeting is the Colorado Mining Association’s annual conference and was held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs in November. The theme was “Mining in the New Millennium — Achievement + Innovation = Survival.” Experts from Colorado’s mining industry and abroad discussed the challenges faced by the mining industry as it enters the new millennium. They offered insights into how the industry will operate during the early years of the 21st century and how it will survive low prices and increased regulatory restrictions.

North of Antwerp central train station, two single-track tunnels for the high-speed train line between Brussels and Amsterdam were constructed. At the same time, the central train station was modified to a through station. Both 1.23 km tunnels are situated in the Antwerp sands and were constructed using a slurry shield machine. Due to the inner city location, the tunnels run over their entire length underneath structures, in some cases with only minimal clearance. The paper deals with these challenging situations. In addition, the tunnel boring machine, the tunnel lining and measures to limit settlements will be introduced.

IN dealing with this subject the intention is not to write a detailed description of the various methods in vogue on the Kalgoorlie field, but rather to give a brief outline of three of the methods which are most universally in force, and from which, ultimately, a few comparisons may be drawn. The three methods which the writer proposes embodying in this article are known as "The Rill," "The Flatback," and "The Shrinkage." For comparative purposes each method will be applied to a block of ore 500 feet in length, and opened up by levels 200 feet apart."The Rin" System. It is necessary in this system, for facilitating mullocking, to make connections between levels by rising and winzing at about every 100 feet or 150 feet along the orebody. After the leading stope is beaten off for the full length ofthe drive, the level is timbered. Single stulls are put in up to a width of fourteen feet. If the span is too great for stulls, set timbers or saddleback stuUs are used. Stulls are lagged over with 4-in gimlet poles, and wooden chutes are built at intervals of 50-feet. Ore passes are cribbed up through the filling directly above each chute, and are constructed of 7-in. round timber or 9 in x 3 in square timber, the passes measuring 4 ft x 4 ft in the clear.Occasionally a double pass may be carried up, one side serving as a travelling way. Stoping is commenced off the winzes, and rills are gradually formed, one on either end of each winze. The rills are generally at an angle of 37° off the horizontal, this allowing for the boring...

A case study is presented of the mechanical behaviour of fractures in the Westphalian A and B siliciclastic succession of mud-, silt- and sandstones with intercalating coal layers in the Campine basin of northeast Belgium. Mining ceased in the area in 1992 and a pilot well was drilled to assess the feasibility of methane extraction by hydraulic fracturing. Work was carried out to study the influence of types of cement fill in fractures on the shear behaviour of the rocks by comparison with that of the coal seams. X-ray computerised tomography was used for visual appraisal and selection of jointed rocks before destructive shear testing was carried out. Two major type of veins were found to be present, one cemented with carbonate and the other with kaolinite or kaolinite/carbonate. Uniaxial compressive strength and shear tests showed that differentiation of the two types of veins was vital in evaluating the strength of the sandstones, as cementing of the fractures by rigid carbonate minerals can reinstate the strength of the rock masses to that of the intact material. "This paper describes mineral processing test work on drill core samples from an ilmenite deposit in Terrebonne County just north of Montreal.Mineralogical examination showed that the intimate associa¬tion between ilmenite and hematite precluded their separation. The maximum concentrate grade was therefore limited to 22.9% Ti. Liberation of gangue from the hemo-ilmenite grains occurred around 400 µm, a size which proved to be too coarse for recovery by flotation.Other physical separation techniques, such as elec¬trodynamic, magnetic and jigging, were tried in order to take advantage of the relatively coarse liberation size. An all-flotation procedure and a combination of jigging and flotation yielded similar separations.IntroductionInco Metals Company, through its subsidiary Canico, optioned an ilmenite deposit in Terrebonne County, just north of Montreal, and conducted a drilling campaign to confirm previous geological assessments of the deposit and to provide core samples for mineralogical study. Parts of these core samples were used for mineral processing studies, which will be described in this report. Recent data indicate a marginal decline in overall growth in world economic output from 3.1% in 1985 to 2.9% in 1986 (table 1),2, 3 Many nations experienced slower economic growth because of the huge trade imbalances existing between the United [ ] States and Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany, the U.S. budget deficit, and the growing Third World debt. Some developing nations, however, experienced booming growth. Declining prices for energy and nonenergy commodities and the fall of the dollar against the currencies of major industrial countries benefited several developing countries--energy importers and exporters of manufactured goods with currencies tied to the U.S. dollar, which were able to expand markets in the industrialized nations. The drop in commodity prices increased demand in industrial countries and depressed it in developing countries. Lower demand in the developing countries contributed to a decline in the real net exports from industrial countries. As a result, output growth in industrial countries declined from 3.0% in 1985 to 2.4% in 1986, despite growing internal demand, Average output growth of developing countries increased from 3.296 to 3.596 during the same period, however, primarily because of the low prices of their products and the strength of demand in industrial countries for those products. Developed country output growth was extremely uneven, however. For example, the economic output of nonfuel exporters grew 5.4% in 1986, while that of fuel exporters dropped 0.7%.

"Cobre Las Cruces mine extracts copper minerals from a VMS deposit located in the well-known Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB). As an open pit, it is distinguished geologically from other IPB mines by the presence of around 150 m of Tertiary soft marls, known locally as the Guadalquivir Blue Marls, followed by a regionally important aquifer. Below the marls and aquifer the mineralization is hosted by rocks typical of the Palaeozoic within the IPB, comprising gossan, tuffs, slates, and sulphides.This combination of a substantially soft rock and more competent, older (but still occasionally problematic) Palaeozoic lithologies constitutes a unique geological framework and presents substantial challenges in maintenance of slope stability, and therefore operational safety, at the mine site. This paper describes the fundamental design, excavation, and monitoring measures implemented at the mine to maintain safe production, and the lessons learnt during the mine development. IntroductionAs a modern Spanish mine, Las Cruces is committed to the use of best available technology and practices with the aim of guaranteeing the production of ore in a safe environment. From a practical perspective, this implies the realization of a high quality pit design, ongoing geotechnical mapping of exposed slopes to ensure conformity with design, and use of leading geotechnical surveillance technology to complement visual observations. The focus of this article is to illustrate how, at a mine site with potentially problematic soil/rock conditions, multiple advanced techniques employed from design stage analysis through to final pit configuration and vigilance, were combined to achieve an overall control of the ground conditions. "Since presenting a technical paper regarding their unique capabilities in Forged Steel Mill Gearing at the SAG-2006 Conference, Australian heavy engineering company Hofmann Engineering has pioneered a number of new manufacturing processes and design concepts for components of large comminution equipment. These include: 1. Novel design improvements for HPGR Rolls with forged steel tyres and a unique patented tungsten carbide insert designed to improve wear life, enhance autogenous layer build-up, and to reduce breakage & chipping under load. 2. Development of forged fabricated Mill Heads using rolled & welded high-tensile steel plate as alternatives to cast conical mill heads. 3. Insitu Girth Gear measurements for profile and wear via portable 6-axis CMM. 4. Gear and Pinion designs to AGMA-6114 for SAG mills of 38’-40’ diameter to 24MW and for Ball Mills of 26’ diameter to 18MW. The paper presents case studies from the Australian heavy manufacturing facilities of Hofmann Engineering, combined with news of their new gear manufacturing and gearbox overhaul facility in Canada."

Densely populated areas face the challenge to provide efficient traffic infrastructure, such as a modern public transportation system. At the same time, the maintenance and modernization of supply and disposal structures for water, sewage, energy and communication are also essential. Additionally, supra-regional transportation routes such as long distance water diversion schemes are the challenges for the future. All these projects are as demanding as they are characterized by a tight time schedule.

Stratabound copper ore bodies in thick Proterozoic metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks at the Tong Kuang Yu Mine in southern Shanxi Province of China were considered as possibly being amenable to block cave mining. Initial evaluation of caving characteristics was based upon old calyx drilling records, limited underground mining experience and geological mapping, a few diamond drill holes and measurements in surface subsidence features. Classification and mapping distribution of rock quality types aided in mine design, prediction of fragment sizing and explosive requirements, cave assist and ground support requirements. Comparison is made between early feasibility predictions and actual mine experience.
