The methods used by Newmont Gold Company for deposit modeling are illustrated by examples taken from current operations and advanced projects. These methods vary depending on a number of factors, including geology, mining and processing methods, economic feasibility, and availability of historical information. It is argued that successful modeling requires understanding these factors, knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the various modeling techniques, and being flexible in selecting the appropriate methods.

The transportation of mine products incurs a cost which can have a significant bearing on the competitive position of the product. This statement not only holds true for the transportation of the finished product but certainly as much for the in- plant haulage of the raw materials. Extensive literature is available both in North America and Europe on all aspects 02 these questions and to cite only a few of them: Pipelining of slurries, oil and gas, shipping of minerals and oil from the Arctic by icebreaking tankers, airlifting of metals or concentrates, etc. This paper is concerned with movable crushing plants as opposed to stationary and their influence on the in-plant transportation, that is trucks vs. belts.

Environmental experts face large and rapidly-increasing volumes of raw data obtained from environmental monitoring stations. These professionals must compile and analyze the data in a systematic manner to cost-effectively understand and minimize the impacts of mining. The shift toward desktop computing, combined with the downsizing of company staffs, has now more than ever created a demand for a modern, PC-based application for the storage, retrieval, analysis and presentation of environmental data. This paper discusses the general requirements of such a system, and points out specific ways in which such industry-specific software can provide convenient and useful access to the data. The software used to illustrate these features is the HydroDat program, developed by Western Water Consultants, Inc.

The modern drilling fluids industry is a dynamic, evolutionary environment. It is continuously striving to satisfy and anticipate the ever-changing needs of the oil and gas industry. The predominant driving forces in the industry over the past decade have changed dramatically. Health and environmental issues, coupled with economic and performance requirements, demand innovation and change from the drilling fluids industry. Emerging drilling fluid technologies will demand environmental considerations from mined components with additional emphasis on cost and performance criteria. Drilling fluids providers continue to search for and identify environmentally sensitive components which meet or exceed the performance of their more toxic predecessors. These changes have and will impact the components of drilling fluids that are mined.

Most electric motor predictive maintenance methods have drawbacks that limit their effectiveness in the mining environment. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing an alternative approach to detect winding insulation breakdown in advance of complete motor failure. In order to evaluate the analysis algorithms necessary for this approach, the USBM has designed and installed a system to monitor 120 electric motors in a coal preparation plant. The computer-based experimental system continuously gathers, stores, and analyzes electrical parameters for each motor. The results are then correlated to data from conventional motor-maintenance methods and in-service failures to determine if the analysis algorithms can detect signs of insulation deterioration and impending failure. This paper describes system design and implementation. At this writing, however, installation is still underway, and field data analysis results are not yet available.

One of the highest costs associated with insitu leaching of copper is electric power. The ReGeneration Project addressed this cost issue with a research and development project for BHP Copper. The project involved the installation of a reverse pump/turbine for the removal of excessive fluid pressure and the production of useful electric power. The motivation for the project was that a reverse pump/turbine unit could not only remove the excess hydraulic pressure, but when connected to an induction .generator, would produce electric power, which could be easily connected to the local power gird, thus reducing operating costs. The project was successful in removing excess fluid pressure and producing electricity. The unit is operating today, producing useful 2,300 volt power at a rate of approximately 128 kilowatts.

Compared to coal or many metals industries, talc must be considered a small, specialty market catering to niches and dependent primarily on the physical attributes of the mined and processed mineral rather than the chemical attributes with copper, lead or uranium concentrate, the primary objective is the percent metal that ultimately is refined by the smelter, as opposed to the brightness, particle size distribution, trace impurities or morphology. The latter constitute the important determinants of where, how and why talc and similar industrial minerals are used. This paper addresses the talc market-place: where it is, how much of a market there is, who the producers are, available capacity, market growth, and marketing techniques.

Mining of thin coal seams is both difficult and uneconomical. As a result, most of thin-seam coal reserves in the U. S. are not being mined. It is estimated that nearly 910 Gt (K. Unrug, 1985) of coal reserves exist in 355 to 710 mm thick seams. The Bureau is attempting to develop new techniques for mining 150 to 1065 mm thick coal seams. This paper summarizes the research work on existing thin-seam mining techniques, testing on small and full scale physical models of the Bureau slot mining concept, and computer modeling of the full-scale process.

The development of long term plans and schedules for strip mines now faces many companies, especially those developing large properties in the West. The rule of mining the lowest strip ratios first, while delaying equipment acquisitions and recouping investment the fastest, creates the situation where stripping ratios are too high in the latter years of mining operations. A program concept taking life of mine return on investment into account is developed in this paper to optimize mine scheduling and equipment acquisition. In addition, quality considerations (heat content, ash, sulfur, washability) can be considered by including the appropriate blending constraints to meet contract requirements.

The past decade has seen remarkable progress by the railroads both in equipment and concepts in the handling of dry bulk. materials. While such shipments have always been an important part of the traffic handled by the railroads I little was done to improve the efficiency of handling or toward attempted optimization of equipment design before 1960. Several developments at about that time turned attention to this important segment of railroad traffic. One was the construction of a successful coal slurry pipe-line. Another was the promise of substantial economy in electric power transmission by ultrahigh voltage systems and finally, came the growing technological and economic feasibility of nuclear fuel electric generating plants. Each of these developments was a threat to the coal traffic of the railroads --the most important single commodity they handled in terms of revenue and tonnage. By the mid-1950's I Southern Railway management had become most concerned with its growing investment in freight car equipment and the declining revenue productivity of the capital employed. Additionally I there was substantial concern with the loss of business and potential losses in the area of the railroad's greatest economic advantage --bulk commodity movements. In 1958 a small team was established to study this problem. They arrived at two conclusions. The first conclusion was that within limits of maximum gross allowable weight on rail the lowest unit net capacity cost of investment came at maximum allowable gross weight per car unit. It is said that Thales of Miletus, 600 B.C.,1 was aware of the attraction of lodestone toward iron and highly magnetic minerals. However, the birth of magnetic concentration followed shortly after the invention of the first electromagnet by Sturgeon in 1825. Sturgeon's magnet was described in the annals of electricity.2 The first attempts to concentrate minerals by the use of magnets date back to about 18473 but the first commercial drum-concentrator was apparently invented by R. Cook in 1849. Credit must also be given to the invention of P. Righter's machine in 1867,5 and to the highly successful Wenström separator devised in Sweden in 1883.8 Since the advent of these early separators there have been virtually hundreds of patents granted covering minor modifications of drum-type magnetic separators. The more important advances from a technological viewpoint have been the design of stable power supplies for d.c. magnets, the advent of ceramic permanent magnets which are now replacing electromagnets for the concentration of ferromagnetic minerals, and advances in general magnet and machine configurations.7 One of the problems facing both the designer and the user of magnetic separators is the evaluation of the body forces acting on particles in the magnetic field of the separator. Perhaps the most elegant method of evaluating the body force associated with a drum-type magnetic separator is that recently suggested by W. F. Brown.8 Brown measures the radial component of the field intensity one-half inch from the drum surface and fits a Fourier series in the angle about the drum axis (Figure 1). "In longwall mines, atmospheric or barometric pressure fluctuations can disturb the pressure balance between the gob and the ventilated working area of the mine, resulting in a phenomenon known as “gob breathing”. Gob breathing triggers a gas flow across the gob and the working areas and may result in a condition where a methane accumulation in the gob flows into the face area forming an explosive mixtures. This paper discusses results of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling carried out to analyze this phenomenon and its impact on the explosive mixture development under a bleeder-ventilated longwall gob panel scheme. Modeling results indicate that the gas inflow and outflow across the gob and the formation of Explosive Gas Zones (EGZs) are directly affected by the barometric pressure changes. Methane gas and EGZs in the gob expand out toward the face and bleeder entries during the falling barometric pressure. Where methane zones interface with mine air, EGZ fringes may form along the face and in the bleeder entries. When the atmospheric pressure increases, an ingression of oxygen into the gob is observed that can also increase EGZs in volume. The findings from this study help assess the methane ignition and explosion risks associated with fluctuating atmospheric pressures. INTRODUCTION Methane explosions continue to be a daunting risk for underground coal miners, although the number of related fatalities and injuries in the U.S. coal mining industry has steadily decreased since the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910. Still, the consequences of a methane explosion are often disastrous with multiple fatalities and property damage often leading to permanent shutdown of the mine. Methane is formed during the coalification process and is released from the coal seam to the mine atmosphere when the coalbed is disturbed by mining or natural causes such as earthquakes. If not properly diluted by appropriate mine ventilation, this methane may accumulate in the active mine workings and gob areas. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have developed numerical models showing how and where explosive methane may accumulate in gob areas. Historical mine explosions appear to show a connection between mine explosions and fluctuating barometric pressure as a result of stormy weather. McIntosh (1957), Boyer (1964), and Kissell et al. (1973) studied the influence of barometric drops on major coal mine disasters in the United States prior to 1970. Their statistical analyses found that a majority of these disasters occurred in the fall and winter months when the barometric pressures were influenced by unstable weather conditions and noted increased methane content in the mine workings during times of falling pressure. Studies conducted by Fauconnier (1992) and Hemp (1994) found similar connections between methane explosions and barometric pressure fluctuations in a majority of gas explosions in South African mines. Ten out of twelve major mine explosions with five or more fatalities in the U.S. after 1970 were found to have occurred during the months of November through April when barometric pressure swings were more abrupt and intense (Lolon et al., 2015)."

In general, it cannot be assumed that the strength of coal pillars remains constant over long time periods. Field observations indicate that a coal seam, especially when it contains a parting layer, deteriorates over time, reducing load-bearing capacity of the pillars. This paper discusses a unique approach to determine the time dependent strength of coal pillars in the field. Three coal pillars that were developed 5, 15 and 50 years ago were chosen for the study. Holes were drilled in coal and parting layers in each pillar and the strength profiles were determined for each hole using the Borehole Penetrometer. The strength data were treated statistically to establish time dependent strength equations for different layers. The results can be used to help estimate the loss of pillar capacity over time.

"As part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s $10.5bn East Side Access Project in New York, 3,200 m of tunnel had to be constructed in rock, mix face and soft ground conditions beneath one of the largest passenger railroad junctions in North America, handling over 780 trains per day. The use of risk based decision making tools was essential in developing the bespoke contract framework that was adopted as well as making informed decisions once excavation commenced. This paper will outline the risk management process adopted, discuss the risks and mitigation strategies adopted and comment on the impacts of this approach on the as built Project cost and schedule. In particular, the paper will outline the unique approach used to establish the baseline against which the Contractors performance would be measured as the selection of a Slurry TBM to excavate the tunnels was considered to compromise the effective use of a Geotechnical Baseline Report. BACKGROUND AND CHALLENGES Contract CQ031, Queens bored Tunnels and Structures was awarded in September 2009 to a joint venture of Granite Northeast/Traylor Brothers/Frontier Kemper (GTF JV) for $717.6m following a negotiated procurement process. A robust approach was taken with regard to the management and payment for risks associated with the construction of these tunnels. Risk assessments were carried out during the design phase and a risk register was developed prior to procurement. During the procurement phase close attention was paid to ensuring that the allocation and pricing of known risks, together with mechanisms for managing future risks were clearly defined between the MTA and GTF JV.In comparison to the excavation work in Manhattan, which was performed in competent hard Manhattan schist, the tunnels in Queens were excavated predominantly through soft ground with a high water table and complex environmental conditions. Not only did this require the use of pressurized face TBM technology, a first in New York, but also a re-evaluation of the contractual mechanisms used to manage the hard rock excavation contracts for their appropriateness to the soft ground tunnel work."

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the fundamentals of fatty acid/fuel oil conditioning for improved flotation selectivity. Both conditioning time and intensity can provide optimum flotation selectivity as well as good recovery. Traditional conditioning seeks to optimize conditioning parameters with subsequent recovery of the hydrophobic mineral. In the fatty acid/fuel oil system many silica gangue particles are also rendered hydrophobic by the flotation collector. Fundamental studies have shown that particle-particle collisions transfer the collector reagents selectively to the mineral surfaces with the highest affinity for the reagent. This mechanism deactivates the gangue particles while increasing the collector reagent loading on the selected mineral. The degree of this transformation is directly related to the number of particle-particle collisions which can be controlled through conditioning time or conditioning mixing intensity.

Solvent Extraction (SX) technology has undergone significant refinements including outright process changes to achieve greater copper production rates with lower organic entrainment levels. LIGHTNIN has completed a detailed study aimed at improving on the conventional Holmes & Narver and Davy Power Gas type impeller designs1 by optimizing the mixing through the use of high efficiency pumper turbines instead of making system changes as others are doing. Since each individual installation requires a different design head and flow, LIGHTNIN has developed the R320 "family" of high efficiency, curved blade pumper turbines. These impellers are designed to maximize head and flow while reducing entrainment through lower power consumption, less shear generation and turbulence, elimination of air incorporation, production of the optimum droplet distribution, and lower tip speeds. These improvements also maintain the required mass transfer and copper recovery of the traditional impeller designs. The R320 impeller benefits have been quantified using Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) and proven in multiple domestic and foreign installations at flow rates exceeding 15,000 GPM. Design comparisons of this improved impeller type versus traditional technology impellers in head, flow, power and entrainment are presented for review. In addition, the inherent benefits of axial flow, high efficiency impellers like the A3 1 0 and A6000 in auxiliary mix chambers will be discussed. The high flow, low shear characteristics of these patented impellers provide the necessary dispersion stability for mass transfer while speeding phase disengagement in the settlers due to low power and low shear input.

IIT Research Institute has initiated several multi-sponsored research programs. In this paper the methods for developing four of these programs are discussed. In general, a broad area of investigation must be proposed to interest a spectrum of different industries. The work must not touch upon proprietary data and will probably involve a number of scientific disciplines. Thus, the problem to be solved will attract sponsors who need to know more about the area under study but do not wish, as a single company, to commit the resources required to obtain the necessary know-how for their needs. The paper draws on the background of four IITRI multi-sponsored projects: Size Reduction, a study of grinding of material to reduce their particle size; Melt-Formed Ceramics Research, a method of producing dense, polycrystalline ceramics using glass forming methods; Binders in Ceramic Processing, which addresses the problems associated with the use of organic aids for ceramic processing; and a Study in Air Pollution Technology, a program to review and assess pollution control equipment for current and future applications.

For the pillars, which have been standing long after mining, the stability depends much on the weathering action in the presence of mine moisture. From the field observations, it has been found that this weathering action becomes critical in terms of pillar stability if the coal seam contains partings or binders in it. The weathering action degrades both the partings and coal in terms of their load bearing capacity as the mine moisture penetrates into them. This paper investigates the effect of weathering action on coal and partings in the laboratory. In the field, the strength profile in the coal and the partings and the effect of time (in terms of the pillar age) on them have been studied by using borehole penetrometer. In this paper, an attempt has also been made to establish formulae for time dependent strength of coal and partings.
