Ore at the Congress gold property, located near Goldbridge, British Columbia, is extremely refractory with most of the gold disseminated in fine-grained arsenopyrite. Metallurgical testwork conducted by Giant Bay Biotech Inc. indicated that biooxidation pretreatment was capable of increasing cyanide gold recovery from the ore to greater than 90%. To determine if the bioleach process could be successfully scaled up, a 225m' (7950-cu ft) commercial size bioleach reactor was built and tested at the mine site in 1989. At that time, the tank was the largest bioleach reactor ever operated. The objectives of the program were: • to ascertain if the biooxidation rates obtained in lab and pilot-scale reactors could be duplicated in a commercial scale tank; • to identify agitation conditions under which the process will function optimally; and • to demonstrate the bioleach process on a scale sufficient to satisfy the owners and potential investors.

Soft laminated iron ore (SLO) having a higher hematite content and Martite goethite iron ore (MGO) having a higher goethite content were subjected to detailed characterization and beneficiation. The present research was designed to investigate if these abundant, low-grade ores can be enriched adequately using standard industry techniques. No significant enrichment of the ores using jigging operation on the coarse (-3,200 +595 mm) size fraction could be achieved. Good liberation was only attained in the 150 to 300 mm particle size range in both cases. Desliming enriches the ground ores significantly. The effect of the feed size on the separation efficiencies of the ground ores were studied using flowing-film concentration on a Wilfley table. Better enrichment is obtained in the case of 150-mm sized feed by tabling. The grade of SLO is improved from 56.14% to 66.51% Fe, while the Fe content of MGO is enriched from 55.16% to 65.83%. Substantial rejection of alumina and silica is also achieved. Due to the friable nature of MGO and the higher goethite content in it, the loss of Fe in the form of ultrafines is greater in this case compared to that of SLO.

Portland, Oregon’s $370 million West Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project has completed the final phase of construction and commissioning. The construction contract, which began in September 2002, was a reimbursable cost plus fixed fee contract that followed a qualifications-based contractor procurement process and apre-construction planning phase. This paper addresses the final results of the contracting method and provides a lessons-learned case history. Specific items addressed include the benefits realized from the contracting method, areas of improvement, final costs compared to the original contract estimates, design changes and schedule impacts, and subcontract management issues.

Optimized mixer settler designs will now handle total flows of over 6,000 m3/hr.Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a timely and predictable tool for design development. Lightnin has the capability of using numerical analysis methodology to evaluate flow patterns and phase separation. CFD can show performance differences between changes, in mix tanks, in settler geometry, and in liquid depth, against variable flow rates. Understanding the differences allows the development of optimized designs. This paper focuses on the major design components of the mixer settler and how technological advances will lead to further improvements, when designing for today’s largest flow plants.

An economic, real-time probe drill monitoring system was developed for Metropolitan Water District’s Arrowhead Tunnels project to quantitatively evaluate ground conditions ahead of a TBM. This system digitally records hydraulic feed, rotation, and percussion pressures and calculates drill advance rates during drilling. These data are computer synthesized to develop a digital representation of the ground ahead, and the resulting “picture” of the ground is distributed to the project team to assist with tunnel construction decisions (i.e., targeting grout holes, optimizing mine-cycle lengths, and avoiding becoming stuck). The analysis and interpretation procedure has now been calibrated and refined using over 5,000 m (3 miles) of geologic face mapping data.

Crosstown Interceptor Phase IA is the first deep tunnel element of the Milwaukee Inline Project. The tunnel contract includes 6,492 meters (m) of 9.1-m-diameter tunnel, two access shafts, and partial lining for structural purposes. The work also includes grouting to be performed as directed by the engineer to provide groundwater infiltration control in lined and unlined reaches of the tunnel. This paper summarizes infiltration observations, progress of the grouting work, and its potential application to the remainder of the Milwaukee project.

Introduction Despite perennial economic turbulence, Argentina continues to push ahead with efforts to develop its fledgling hardrock mining industry. The country lacks the infrastructure and mining history of neighboring Chile, but contains vast areas of great resource potential. The eastern slope of the Andean Cordillera in west-northwest Argentina is a relatively little-explored region offering geology highly conducive to the occurrence of base and precious metals deposits. Past exploration has concentrated on locating and evaluating porphyry copper-molybdenum (Cu-Mo) type occurrences. Comparatively little attention has been given to precious metals potential. An interesting and important group of base and precious metals prospects in northwestern Argentina occurs within and adjacent to the Upper Miocene Farallon Negro volcanic complex in Catamarca province. The volcanic complex contains numerous base and precious metals vein occurrences, high gold porphyry copper prospects, and possible disseminated gold targets that have attracted relatively minor attention in the past. Various geologic aspects of the region have been reported by several workers (Llambias, 1970, 1972; Caelles et al, 1971; and Sillitoe, 1973). Regional geology The Farallon Negro volcanic complex is located within the Sierras Pampeanas morphostructural province about 200 km (125 miles) east of the main Andean Cordillera (Fig. 1). The Sierras Pampeanas is characterized by north-south-trending basin and range topography that developed during the Miocene and Pliocene. Uplifted blocks are composed mainly of lower Paleozoic metasediments and granitoid plutonic rocks unconformably overlain by Tertiary redbeds and minor carbonates. A consistent landward migration of volcanic and intrusive ac¬tivity occurred in this region of the Andes from the early Mesozoic through the mid-Tertiary. Most tunnels built in Sydney encounter similar ground situations; they penetrate either the Hawkesbury Sandstone or the shales that lie beneath the city. Tunnels in these materials are generally sup-ported by rock bolts in combination with a shotcrete lining. A method of analysis is presented to improve our understanding of the long term behaviour of fiber reinforced shotcrete (FRS) materials and the tunnel support systems. A finite element method SAFEA (Semi-analytical FE Analysis) is developed to model the combined creep behaviour of a shotcrete lining and the Hawkesbury Sandstone. To model the time-dependent creep behaviour, the bulk modulus and shear modulus of the materials are represented by logarithmic functions in time. A Laplace transform is then applied to these functions of time and the solution of the problem found from a finite element analysis. Tablot?s method is then used to invert the transformed values and find the solution in real time. The time dependent creep deflection of the numerical tunnel models reflects the interaction of the shotcrete lining and rock which have different creep parameters.

The Florida Department of Transportation District 6 (FDOT D6) began a study in 1987 for a master plan to improve the traffic circulation and congestions between the Port of Miami (POM) and downtown Miami, FL. This study included a tunnel connection between two man-made islands, the Watson and the Dodge islands. Though a finding of no significant impact (FONSI) was completed in 1992, the project remained on hold for about 10 years. In 2002, Florida Turnpike took over this project, re-evaluated its benefits to the lo-cal communities, determined its feasibility (specifically the tunnel options) and established a probable cost. In 2005, the FDOT D6 regained its charge over the project and concluded that a bored tunnel under Biscayne Bay is feasible. Its primary components are: ? Widening of the MacArthur Causeway Bridge, to accommodate truck traffic to the Port of Miami. ? A tunnel connection between Watson Island and Dodge Island, where the POM is located. ? Connections to the POM roadway system, either for the traffic from the city of Miami or for the truck traffic from I-395 to the POM. The project will improve access to and from the POM and provide a dedicated roadway connector linking the POM with the MacArthur Causeway (State Route 41/1) and I-395, specifically for the trucks in and out of the POM without going through downtown Miami. As identified in the project information memorandum (PIM), its primary objectives are to: ? Improve access to the POM, helping to keep it competitive and ensuring its ability to handle projected growth in its cruise and cargo operations. [ ] ? Improve traffic safety in downtown Miami by removing POM traffic, trucks and buses from the congested downtown street network and, in doing so, facilitate ongoing and future development plans in and around downtown Miami.

The need for anti-corrosion coatings has existed for many years in the ground support industry, but the application requirements have made coating selection limited. Varying groundwater and chemical conditions continually challenge long term coating performance. Traditionally the industry coating preference has been hot-dip galvanizing due to its performance characteristics in highly corrosive environments and low cost nature. However, the galvanized coating has application limitations. This paper highlights some of these limitations and provides selection criteria for a new organic coating developed for one such difficult application, DSI?s Omega BoltPTM Pwhich is an expandable ground support. The Galatia Mine is a dual-seam underground coal mine located in Saline County, IL. In 1984, it became the first coal mine to be permitted by the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals to operate diesel equipment underground. And it is one of the larger underground coal mines in the nation to use diesel equipment. From the beginning, Kerr-McGee determined that diesel equipment offered the best approach to the safe and productive development and operation of the Galatia Mine. The flexibility of this equipment and its ability to promptly respond to changing conditions and mining locations made its use desirable for building this large dual-seam coal mine. The mine had a planned nominal annual capacity of 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) and would employ more than 500 people. Galatia's current reserves are estimated at 231 Mt (255 million st) of recoverable coal from two seams of high-quality, high-volatile bituminous coal. The Harrisburg No. 5 seam is shipped primarily as a low-sulfur steam coal or as a metallurgical blend stock. It is also used in the pulverized coal injection (PCI) process for steel making. The Herrin No. 6 seam is a medium-sulfur coal. Annual production is shown in Fig. 1. A good indicator of a mine's success is employee productivity improvement. For many reasons - the proper use of diesel equipment, the introduction of longwalls and increased employee ex¬perience - Galatia employees have achieved a steady growth in annual productivity (Fig. 1) while maintaining an exceptional safety record.

EPA NRMRL Mine Waste Technology Program and Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting an in-situ technology demonstration at the Anchor Hill Pit Lake, Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site. The goal is to develop in-situ treatment cost/performance data for potential application in long-term water treatment/management at Gilt Edge and similar sites. The pit contained 77,000,000 gallons of pH 3water with elevated metals, sulfate, and nitrate. The Green World Science® patented process for in situ treatment was implemented to isolate and sequester metals; create stable long-term water quality and restore a sustainable ecosystem. COCs have decreased more than 99%, and dissolved discharge standards were attained.

Sustaining the region?s mobility needs, achieving projected economic growth, and maintain Midtown Manhattan as a center of regional, national and global importance has led to continued investment in commuter rail and transit infrastructure in New York City and resulted in design and construction of large underground caverns. The current plans for stations in Manhattan include New York Penn Station Expansion (NYPSE) caverns for Trans Hudson Express (THE) Tunnel Project for New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Long Island Railroad (MTACC/LIRR) twin caverns for East Side Access (ESA) Project, and station caverns of the No. 7 Line Subway Extension Project and Second Avenue Subway Project for Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction/New York City Transit (MTACC/NYCT). This paper provides a general overview of these large caverns now in design or construction in Manhattan, the area?s geologic setting, the geotechnical factors considered and approaches commonly applied for cavern design.

Ultra fine grinding is becoming increasingly used in the mining industry over recent years. The development of large-scale units for high volume grinding of low value materials and concentrates has opened up new areas of economical metal extraction. The ability of stirred vertical mills to produce very fine particles with high surface areas, is providing mine operators with novel extraction possibilities within gold concentrate regrind for Biox or leach feed, Activox autoclave feed preparation and lime slaking operations. The paper will review design, operational and maintenance aspects of ANI-Metprotech stirred vertical mills, comparing these to tower mills, horizontal bead mills and attrition mills.

The construction of the La Joya hydropower plant (Costa Rica) was awarded by the Spanish power company, Union Fenosa, to the Italian Joint Venture formed by the companies SELI SpA and Ghella SpA. The project, located in a mountainous region of central Costa Rica, includes a 7.9-km-long head race tunnel having an excavation diameter of 6.18 m. A double-shielded TBM was selected to perform the tunnel excavation, which involved mainly volcanic rocks in variable but generally very weak conditions. The tunnel crossed long and continuous sections in completely weathered rock masses with no residual cohesion and with high water inflows. The paper describes and analyzes: The special methods adopted to overcome these sections with the TBM includ-ing face stabilization by chemical grout and foams as well small by-pass tunnels in the crown combined with TBM advance/support The grouting design and the grouting method that was implemented to meet the waterproof design specifications and restore the original groundwater level in the mountain The additional geological investigations performed to improve the knowledge of the rock mass in front of the TBM and the outcomes of these investigations The performance of the TBM in different ground conditions and on average along the entire tunnel Finally, the author’s comment about the possibility of implementing and improving the technologies experimented with in this project in future similar applications.

Clay minerals play an important role in the gravitational stability of man-made rock piles by affecting geotechnical and hydrological characteristics of the material. The Goathill North rock pile at the Questa Mine in northern New Mexico has been the focus of a multi-disciplinary study to determine the effect of weathering on rock pile stability and in particular to determine if clay minerals are forming in the rock pile due to surface weathering. The results of x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses indicate the clay minerals found within the fine-grained soil matrix of the rock pile are of hydrothermal origins and did not detect any neoformation of clay minerals. The foremost mechanism for an increase in clay minerals within the rock pile is the physical break down of hydrothermally altered rock fragments to release hydrothermal clay minerals. The hydrothermal clay minerals within the rock pile show evidence of weathering by the dehydration of smectite from 2-water to 1-water interlayers within the clay mineral structure. This dehydration is most likely due to higher temperatures and low relative humidities in the Goathill north rock pile during surface exposure.

Mine seals are used in underground coal mines throughout the United States to isolate abandoned mining areas from the active mine workings. The objective of adding inert gas to a sealed mine area is to quickly reduce the oxygen concentration in the sealed area to a level that will not support combustion. In the US, this process is typically conducted from the ground surface and because surface-to-mine access is constrained by so many variables, it is very difficult to provide a source of inert gas to the place where it is needed underground. To alleviate this problem On Site Gas Systems, under a NIOSH contract, built a nitrogen (N2) generation plant that operates in the underground environment. The purpose of this work was to create a reliable in-mine mobile plant that would extract N2 gas from the mine atmosphere and use the gas to create and maintain a safe sealed mine area. The plant is based on a novel design using pressure swing adsorption technology and is sized to fit on a standard shield car or mine dolly for easy transport in and around an underground coal mine. The plant is capable of producing about 900 scf/min of N2 gas at ambient mine conditions. After an exhaustive series of laboratory tests, the plant was field tested at the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) where a portion of the mine was sealed and rendered inert. During the test, the movement of the injected gas was monitored at several underground points to observe the progress and extent of the inerting process. This paper describes the plant design and the results of the field test at the SRCM. Barrick Gold plans to have four new gold mines in production by 2006. Together, the mines would increase the company’s output by 40 percent. The projects include Veladero in Argentina, Alto Chicama in Peru, Cowal in Australia and Tulawaka in Tanzania. All of them are scheduled to begin production between the first quarter of 2005 and the first quarter of 2006. They are expected to drive Barrick Gold’s growth profile to a target of 211.5 to 217.7 t (6.8 million to 7 mil-lion oz) of gold production in 2007. The company’s projected output for 2004 is 152.4 to 155.5 t (4.9 million to 5million oz) in 2004. Overall, higher production and lower costs are expected in the early years from the new mines.

In recent years, U.S. regulatory agencies have placed emphasis on identifying and regulating asbestos dust exposures in the mining environment, with a particular focus upon industrial mineral deposits in which asbestos occurs as an accessory mineral. Because asbestos minerals form in specific geologic environments, only certain predictable types of industrial mineral deposits can potentially host asbestos mineralization. By applying a basic knowledge of asbestos geology, the costly and time consuming efforts of asbestos monitoring and analyses can be directed towards those mineral deposit types most likely to contain asbestos mineralogy, while saving efforts on the mineral deposits that are unlikely to contain asbestos. While the vast majority of industrial mineral deposits in the Western United States are asbestos-free, there are several types that can, in some instances, host asbestos mineralization, or be closely associated with it. These industrial mineral deposits include a few types of aggregate, dimension, and decorative stone, and some deposits of chromite-nickel, magnesite, nepheline syenite, olivine, rare earth elements, talc, vermiculite, and wollastonite.

The extension of the commuter railway system (S-Bahn) in Leipzig, Germany willrequire the construction of an underground line crossing the downtown area of thecity to tie the Bavarian Station in the South to the Main-Station in the North. The City-Tunnel-Leipzig is currently one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. This system extension will have a length of approximately five kilometers. 3.9 kilometers of that length are currently being constructed using either cut & cover construction or tunnelingmethods. The design and construction of this project currently is and will continue facing very significant challenging urban and demanding geotechnical conditions.
