INTRODUCTION In any large earth-moving operation, good planning and management are necessary to complete the operational tasks promptly and successfully. When an earth moving operation is complicated by radioactive contaminants, normal earth moving techniques and procedures must be modified. Any planning and management, therefore, must include the radiological aspects of the operation. It was found that the radiological aspects dominated most of the planning and management activities and were extended to all facets of the decontamination work at the former Shiprock uranium millsite. These planning aspects are discussed and their use to develop a work plan is described. The management aspects are discussed and their use to establish a management structure are also presented. PLANNING Some method of procedure, formulated beforehand, was necessary to govern the decontamination work at the former Shiprock uranium millsite. This procedure was expressed in the form of a work plan which served several listed purposes. 1. It defined the work to be done and the sequence it would follow. 2. It was used as a yardstick to measure progress. 3. It was used to assign organizational responsibilities. Several factors were considered to aid in the development of the plan. These factors are discussed below: Goals It was established that radiation exposure was occurring to persons working at the millsite, and in an around the community of Shiprock, from airborne radioactive mill wastes and radon-222 exhaling from the tailings piles. The goal set for the decontamination work was to reduce on-site exposures to levels acceptable for the millsite occupants. The attainment of this goal would also have a substantial impact in reducing off-site exposures. The objectives necessary to achieve the goal were consolidation and containment of the wastes. The former objective implies decontamination of the millsite and environs, and the later implies stabilization of the wastes. In practice, a total and complete decontamination of the millsite and contaminated environs would be very difficult and costly. The costs for decontaminating them could be high enough that an alternative method might be more cost-effective for reducing human exposures (i.e, move the affected people away from the source). The interim guide "Radiological Criteria for the Decontamination of Inactive Uranium Millsites" was used for the decontamination criteria (EPA 74). Briefly, the criteria state that off-pile decontamination should be effective enough to reduce the net above ground exposure rate to less than 10 [u]R/hr for unrestricted use of the affected area. When decontamination cannot readily be achieved, the exposure rate levels could be relaxed to 40 [u]R/hr; however, the affected area has to be restricted. The second objective, waste containment, means isolating the wastes from the biosphere. Since no method of containment was available at the beginning of the millsite decontamination effort, temporary containment (interim stabilzation) became the objective. The tailings pile and decontamination wastes would be covered with clean fill. The interim stabilization should last from 5 to 10 years until the final disposition of the wastes will occur. The goal, therefore, would be achieved by decontaminating the off-pile areas to less than 10 uR/hr where practical. The decontamination wastes would be used to plate the surface of the tailings pile and would be covered with clean fill. Radiological Survey The radiologial survey is the key factor for planning a decontamination activity. The survey should delineate the spread and depth of the contaminants relative to the decontamination criteria. Surface wastes, in general, can be evaluated for spread and depth with reasonable radiation survey equipment. Subsurface wastes on the other hand can be missed entirely, as happened during the radiation survey at the Shiprock site, although numerous exploration holes were bored and dug. The survey results can be used to define areas that may not be amenable to decontamination because of complications or safety reasons. For example, no decontamination of the bluff base was to be attempted because of the possibility the bluff might collapse on the personnel and equipment. Contaminated bottoms of decant ponds on the flood plain were not removed because they would be slurried by ground water. Slurry removal was deemed inefficient because the contaminants would be scattered and no equipment was available for its transport. Recent work to upgrade the ventilation system for the el Mochito lead/zinc mine in central Honduras is discussed. Network modeling and underground measurements were used to evaluate cost-effective alternatives for achieving satisfactory ventilation in a complex and expanding underground operation. Both interim and long-term solutions were implemented to make mining possible under difficult conditions. INTRODUCTION Mining operations at the el Mochito Mine, located in the central highlands of Honduras, Central America, have been virtually continuous since the opening of the mine in 1948. Initially a high-grade silver mine, the mine has expanded along a westward trend of pipe-like orebodies to a distance of roughly one mile from two centrally located shafts. Production of the relatively large San Juan orebody at the western most extension of the mine (Paddock, 1981) led to the introduction of diesel-powered equipment; however, the ventilation infrastructure was insufficient to meet the needs of mechanized mining. A succession of owners/operators in the 1980s allowed the existing ventilation infrastructure to decay to the point that ventilation in the production areas of the mine was very poor. Environmental conditions in some working areas were not conducive to efficient ore extraction because of high dry bulb temperature, high humidity, and diesel emissions. Upon acquiring the mine in 1990, Breakwater Resources of Tucson, Arizona began an aggressive program to refurbish the mine infrastructure to complete extraction of the San Juan orebody and to allow the extension of the mine another 2500 ft to the west for extraction of the Nacional orebody. The program included increasing the capacity of the main ventilation system. This article presents a case history of the process of upgrading the ventilation system in a mine where extensive old workings cause large air leakage. This process has been one of selecting solutions to difficult technical problems that are compatible with the existing mine infrastructure and economic constraints. The initial ventilation system is described in the background section, along with ventilation projections for the mine expansion. Field characterization of the ventilation system for design verification and fan specification is then discussed. The paper describes a series of interim changes to the system to improve ventilation pending completion of new ventilation boreholes. In addition, the temperature/ heat problems in the mine are described. BACKGROUND Initial Condition of Ventilation System The ventilation system is illustrated in Figure 1, which shows the extent of mining with the main ventilation paths superimposed. Early mining around the two shafts opened up vertical connections (stopes and raises) over the entire 2420 ft (737.6 m) of vertical extent, and mining progressed to the west primarily using compressed air and electric-powered equipment. Since ventilation was not a complex problem in the original mining system, the stopes and interconnecting raises were not sealed. The San Juan orebody was much larger than the silver ore zones mined previously, being primarily zinc and other base metals. Its geometry, size, and grade allowed the use of vertical crater retreat (VCR) stoping with diesel mucking and haulage equipment. Its depth, along with the existence of warm groundwater, resulted in a mine climate problem on the lower levels. To establish a complete ventilation circuit, two vertical boreholes (Bonanza Nos. 1 and 2) had been drilled by previous owners from the surface in the vicinity of the San Juan orebody. The system design called for air to be drawn down the intake shafts, across the lower mine levels to the San Juan workings, then up through the San Juan ramps and ore passes to these two exhaust boreholes (see Figure 1). In practice, however, only the Bonanza No. 1 borehole was drawing air through the desired path. Leakage across the old upper levels from the intake shafts, the Caliche tunnel, and from intervening abandoned stopes and raises supplied most of the air flowing to the base of the Bonanza No. 2 borehole. In effect, there were two ventilation circuits in semi-parallel through the mine, of which only one was delivering appreciable air to the San Juan workings.

Introduction Troublesome shales have plagued the petroleum industry for more than 50 years. Unstable boreholes have been experienced when drilled into shale formations; sane have been studied almost at the beginning of rotary drilling. A little progress has been made since then, but much is still to be learned. No simple solution exists so far, but good drilling practices combined with good mud practices have been helpful. It is well known that shales in general have a strong affinity for water, and when water is adsorbed, the stability of the shale section of a well is reduced; cohesive strength will be re- bed, properties will be altered and shale will generally expand and/or crumble. The amount of water a shale will adsorb depends on the characteristics of its clay mineral and the ionic concentration of surrounding fluid. Fluid loss and the resulting hydration of an unstable formation can lead to serious downhole problems. The rate of fluid loss depends greatly on the permeability of the deposited cake. In impermeable formations, however, there is no loss of fluid into the formation. As such, shale, because of its very low porosity and almost no permeability, could be termed impermeable. Yet there is strong evidence that shale surfaces are wetted by an invasion of fluid into the formation through microfractures and jointed planes. It is this wetting that causes the shales to swell and slough into the hole, resulting in problems such as increased mud volume and treating costs, bridges and fill-up, stuck pipe, overgauge hole, poor cement jobs and increased cement requirements, and logging and completion difficulties. Drilling operations have been defeated by severe shale problems, resulting in & hole being plugged and abandoned after several weeks of drilling. Shales are we1l known as being difficult and costly to drill. Numerous fishing jobs have plagued drilling operations, and the cost of reaming tight holes ad weighting up the drilling mud to control shale sloughing has been high. The concept of controlling water loss to stop sloughing was introduced in the 1920's. It was known-then that calcium in fresh water re- strains clay £ran excessive swelling (theory of osmosis) . This reinforced the belief that calcium-based muds such as lime, gypsum and calcium chloride should minimize hydration of clays. Lime muds were then introduced for this purpose and others in the 1930-1940 decade1. They were used for shale inhibition but were not effective. In an attempt to improve them, a special calcium-type mud beam popular during the 1950's. Hole enlargement continued and they too were considered ineffective. During & early 1960qs, papers were published claiming that shale swelling could be prevented by using high concentrations of chemical thinner called Chrane Lignosulfonate1. This began the era of highly treated lignosulfote muds. Unfortunately, the hole enlargement problem continued. During & mid-1960’s, oil based muds were used for the purpose of inhibition of shales. Not until 1966 did Mondshine2 suggest that the water phase be saturated with calcium chloride. The cost of using oil based mud was considered by most operators not worth the additional hole stability. The potassium chloride-polymer muds were also used in many fields in the United States and western Canada. The use of these muds has been claimed to prevent clay swelling by inhibition and encapsulation in sane areas of western Canada. They are also expensive and their ueneral application is still experimental. To reduce filtrate loss when sloughing shale becomes a problem during drilling is a reasonable practice. This study will investigate the use of cationic organic additives to mud to form a protective barrier between the shale - which are primarily composed of clays - and water that will keep water from entering the microfractures and will also prevent them from hydrating. In so doing, an understanding of modern clay chemistry and & dispersive properties of cationic additives in water based systems will be our most valuable tools. This study will also present and solve a mathematical model for simulating cation transport phenomena in fractured shales using the Framdlich equilibrium adsorption isotherm. The studies will analyze wellbore failure and stability as affected by cationic organic material.

This paper, in its first part, compares the profile and economic weight in the extraction of industrial minerals and aggregates to the so called conventional mining activities (metals, coal, gas and oil extraction) in Brazil. In its second part, a descriptive analysis of the present situation of the education in Brazil is made, emphasizing the graduation and post-graduation formation especially in engineering. The curricular structure of the schools that prepare the mining workforce is discussed and the presence of specific subjects in industrial minerals is evaluated. Finally, considerations are made on the actions being taken in the main universities and companies, aiming to improve the formation of the specialized workforce. The Brazilian mining production, comparing 2010 to 2011 showed an expansion of more than 3% (IBGE, 2012). Not bad, but nothing to do with the 13% growth between 2010 and 2009 (influenced by a recovery effect from the 2008 commodities? nightmare). The commodities that had a rising behavior were titanium, gypsum, nickel, graphite, bauxite, phosphate, chrome and chrysotile. All of them were eclipsed by the impressive growth of iron ore production. Some decreases could be noticed, eg. in zinc, kaolin, magnesite and salt production (DNPM, 2012). In fact, the mining activities followed the positive growth of the country these last 5 years. The commercial balance (exports against imports) was not spectacular (positive in US$ 30 billion in 2010). It is important to notice that the mineral commodities balance was US$ 35 billion, representing 27.4% of the total exports and 15.6% of the total imports of Brazil (DNPM, 2012). In this positive environment, the workforce in Brazil showed progress in number of formal jobs and average revenues.

Pumped storage power plants are one of the options to store the fluctuating production of electric energy from renewable sources in a sustainable manner and is able to provide Europe with the opportunity to overcome the effects of climate change. However, due to the extensive land use required when planning the water reservoirs, several projects have been declined after social conflicts raised, even in Germany. Nonetheless, after the flooding and drought periods in northern Germany, the catastrophic floods of July 2021 in south west Germany, the country’s need to decrease its dependency on import of gas and energy supply, and the energy transition goals set for 2030 and 2050, it has become clear that the implementation for water reservoirs must increase in the coming years, whether above ground or underground. Furthermore, not only Germany is interested in the use of underground cavities for water and energy storage, other European countries as Sweden are currently developing studies and solutions to bring this concept soon to reality in Europe. This article introduces the systematic approach for planning and designing large underground cavities for water reservoirs as a sustainable energy transition approach and a climate change response by showcasing the process of selection and results of the “Energy and Water Storage Harz” (EWAZ) research project. Additionally, the results of the evaluation of the effect of implementing the selected underground and surface infrastructure into the current water management system in the region is presented. Finally, the different possibilities evaluated for the underground cavities within the project and the technical challenges involved are be discussed.

As the mining industry begins efforts to examine the feasibility of extraterrestrial resource utilization, the extraction and processing of icy regolith containing water and other volatile materials will be the initial focus for future expansion of capabilities. Pure water is essential for human consumption, and a source of oxygen and hydrogen. The latter, along with the volatile materials, lend themselves to the creation of fuels that may be used for further space exploration at distances not currently feasible. For any extraterrestrial scoping project, the transport of materials to geoscientists remains virtually impossible. Therefore, analysis must be done in-situ, possibly millions of miles away from the nearest human. To address the need for geologic resource estimation in the absence of geoscientists, an infrared framework has been developed for the analysis of water ice content in simulants of permanently shaded lunar regolith. This framework relies on a convolutional neural network model for the rapid analysis of percent water ice content in samples, at which point standard geostatistical methods may be employed.

Many coal seams are associated with soft floor strata and during mine development if coal pillars are not properly designed, floor heave occurs and causes interruption of coal production. In the severe cases, the section or mine is abandoned. One of the methods for controlling floor heave is floor bolting. This paper describes the demonstration of floor bolting methods in a West Virginia coal mine. Three methods were used: (1) vertical full resin bolting, (2) floor truss bolting, and (3) floor truss bolting plus a floor cut at the center of the entry. The design of each method and the experimental results are discussed in detail.

The practice of blasthole mining is typically applied in competent ground conditions, primarily because of the open stope dimensions. At Magma Copper -Superior Mine, a field pilot project was completed examining a variation of blasthole mining in poor ground conditions. With the continued downward pressure on coal selling prices, mine management must make its operations as efficient as possible. The problem is the same one throughout the mineral industries, streamlining operations to maintain competitive mining costs (Born, 1991). There has been a great deal of research into better using production manpower. But the story is different for operations support personnel. Traditionally, planning man-power requirements are done annually, with modifications to the operating plan occurring generally quarterly. On the other hand, the demands on manpower are often dynamic, being responsive to changing productivity levels ,mine conditions (including water influx, bad roof, poor floor)and unanticipated project requirements (responses to machine breakdowns or a new section setup requirement because of a drop in coal quality in another area). Such changes may impact the manpower structure significantly. At times they may cause serious labor relations problems concurrently. Realignments and the generation of instability in the workforce because of active job switching (bidding) are a result. Most responses by coal operators are reactive rather than proactive, a situation that could be mollified by more accurate and detailed planning of predictable manpower requirements. A manpower planning tool is needed that takes into consideration such things as changing productivity levels and conditions as manhour requirements for different work areas are planned, rather than blindly allocated through traditional staffing modes.

Using an agitated column 203 mm (8") diameter by 1829 mm (72") tall with independent agitation units for the gas dispersion zone and the collection zones, respectively, permitted the independent evaluation of the attachment and the detachment mechanisms for the chalcopyrite/ silica system. Three particle size fractions were used in this study, i.e. coarse (+75 µ m), intermediate (-75 µ m + 10 µ m) and fines (-10 µ m). The optimum selection of the two agitation zones for the three particle size fractions were determined as a function of grade, recovery, residence time and air superficial gas velocity.

Inflatable friction rock bolts (IFRBs) are often considered temporary ground support due to their susceptibility to weakening from corrosion. The effective service life of an IFRB can be difficult to estimate due to the multitude of factors that affect the rate of corrosion. Some mine sites have experienced several-year-long service lives of IFRBs without issue, while others experience corrosion-related falls of ground only weeks after installation. The most common industry method of assessing bolt performance is by pull testing the fixture. However, due to the IFRB’s ability to mobilize its full tensile capacity with less than 2 feet of anchored length, corrosion along the bolt at depths greater than 2 feet from the collar cannot be identified using this approach. Alternatively, reinflation testing is a simple and non-destructive method of evaluating the condition of an entire bolt length for breaches in the bolt wall. This can be particularly useful when assessing the extent of corrosive conditions within a particular mining area where instabilities have already occurred and the condition of nearby bolts is unknown, or when re-entering historic mine workings which have not been monitored.

Bacterial populations play an active role in mineral weathering in subsurface and near-surface environments e.g., supergene enrichment of Cu at Morenci, AZ. An in vitro bacterial biofilm model was used to examine the interaction between Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold (which is toxic) or amino acid-gold complexes in gold mobility. The immobilization of ionic gold was between 80-90% for 1 week but as the available, cellular reactive sites became saturated immobilization decreased to 14% within 2 weeks. In the asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization occurred at a high rate (80-90%) throughout the experiment with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae.

Due to disturbance of their traditional roosts, caves and tree hollows, more than half of the 44 bat species found in the United States and Canada now live in abandoned and inactive underground mines. The North American Bats and Mines Project was created two years ago by Bat Conservation International Inc. (BCI) in Austin, TX and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in response to the issue of mine closure and bat habitat. The partnership provides national coordination among government and private agencies and the mining industry to minimize the loss of bats living in mines. It also trains land managers on how to conduct cost-effective mine assessment and closure to protect both bats and people.

There is a misconception that mineral-project economic evaluations in the former Soviet Union are either nonexistent or very limited. This is not the case. In fact, there are at least two basic methods that can be utilized to evaluate the vast mineral resources of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Every ten to 12 years, prices for concentrates and metals were established by the Council of Ministers and remained unchanged until the next reconsideration of prices .

"Feldspar may represent 60% of the earth’s crust, but the mineral does not exist in a pure state. It is generally associated with quartz, iron containing minerals such as mica, and titanium containing minerals such as rutile. Feldspar itself can even exist in different lattices from those containing sodium to various divalent ions. As such, its beneficiation has become a process that is quite complicated, when compared to the beneficiation of other minerals. It is this complexity that has made feldspar beneficiation dependent on tailor made reagents to successfully yield the industry specified feldspar products. This paper reviews the mineralogical variations found from two feldspar mines and the development of collectors to specifically target a Fe+Ti concentration of < 0.05%, while maintaining a feldspar recovery greater than 90%.INTRODUCTION Feldspar is a class of aluminum silicates that represents the most abundant mineral on earth (Vidyadhar, 2002). This class of mineral can further be defined by the types or concentrations of cations present in the crystal lattice, MAlSi3O8 (M = K, orthoclase and microcline; M = Na, Albite; M = Ca, Anorthite) (Heyes, 2012). Feldspar is most commonly mined and processed for either the alumina used in glass making or for the alkalis used in ceramics. The alumina is known to improve product hardness, durability, and resistance to chemical corrosion. The alkalis act as flux, which means they not only lower the melting temperature of the mineral mixture, but also assist in connecting the other components present in ceramics. It was stated in 2009 that the world production of feldspar was in excess of 18.3 million tons produced, with the majority coming from China, Italy, and Turkey. Raw feldspar is typically found with quartz, iron containing minerals such as mica, titanium containing minerals such as rutile, and other feldspar minerals (Celik, 2001). Quartz is stated as having a negative effect on the melting point of the feldspar, whilst the iron and titanium based mineral contaminants are known to have negative effects on color and quality of the product produced; these mineral contaminants must therefore be separated prior to application (Barns, 1997 & Celik, 2001). Mineral flotation and magnetic separation are the most common means of feldspar beneficiation. However, conditions vary greatly from mineral contaminant to mineral contaminant (Table 1). Some literature suggests feldspar can be floated with an amine, but this generally yields lower than acceptable recoveries and often still requires the magnetic separation of iron based minerals to achieve the desired grade (Amarante, 1997 & Heyes, 2012). Feldspar flotation can be further improved with the addition of hydrofluoric acid (HF) as a silica depressant and feldspar surface modifier, but this still requires the removal of some of the other minerals first. Rutile can be floated with an anionic fatty acid collector at a pH range of 7-8 or with a petroleum sulfonate at a pH < 4 (Celik, 2001), while mica can be floated with a petroleum sulfonate or an amine collector at a pH of 3.5."

"INTRODUCTION High sulfate (SO4-2) levels often occur in MIW (mining influenced water) either as the result of oxidation of sulfide minerals exposed by mining activity or by deliberate addition – commonly by sulfuric acid (H2SO4) use in hydrometallurgical leaching activities. Increasing regulation of sulfate discharge is creating new pressure to treat or mitigate sulfate release to prevent its entry into the environment. Current treatments include precipitating as gypsum during lime treatment, filtration separation using membranes such as reverse osmosis and nanofiltration technology, and biological elimination via methods like constructed bioreactors. Blue Planet Strategies (BPS) focuses on improved resource utilization targeting electrolytic treatment and waste conversion into resources and has now demonstrated that its proprietary DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform can also remove sulfate from target streams as a byproduct of its usual primary treatment focus points of metal species elimination and/or pH adjustment.[1-6] This powerful new capability can mitigate sulfate contamination and recover the sulfate in a useful and potentially saleable form as a byproduct of improved primary treatments focused on enhancing production or treating waste. This provides a new treatment opportunity and value proposition for lowering overall sulfate consumption/addition or creating new revenue to defray conventional treatment costs. The DEMET Alternative DEMET utilizes a patented electrolytic technology platform employing proprietary dynamic high surface area electrodes in innovative configurations to achieve a variety of novel selective chemistries. DEMET‘s unique elements can yield higher processing rates at practical efficiencies, lower energy consumption, plus improved processing stability and lower maintenance requirements due to enhanced resistance to cell fouling and shorting; while also thwarting cross stream (catholyte vs. anolyte) contamination. "Cast blasting is the primary means of overburden displacement in a surface coal mine. It serves two purposes; fragmenting the rock and throwing it directly to its spoil pile using explosive energy. Increased throw minimizes costs by reducing the amount of material that needs to be re-handled. Prior studies have shown that by only changing blast hole timing with the same blast design, fragmentation and throw alters. It is necessary in cast blasting to optimize both fragmentation and throw, since larger fragments will require more wasted energy to throw the same distance. In an operating mine in Georgia, an optimum inter-hole delay for fragmentation has been found by studying timings from 0ms to 45ms. Instantaneous timing between holes increased the throw by over 100 ft, but fragmentation was poor. Shock and detonation wave collision is a potential reason for this increased throw. This paper investigates this optimized inter-hole timing while altering top and bottom column primer time to potentially improve throw while maintaining optimum fragmentation. Timings studied are top initiation, bottom initiation, and top and bottom simultaneously. INTRODUCTION Explosives are utilized extensively by the mining industry in order to break rock, as either ore or overburden, for hauling, loading, and crushing. An effective production blast strives to achieve optimum rock fragmentation in order to increase the efficiency and reduce the costs of those downstream operations, while simultaneously meeting environmental regulations. The goal of blasting with respect to fragmentation is, according to Hettinger (2015), “to decrease the average particle size of the fragmented rock without overly increasing fines or, in other words, improve fragmentation.” Additionally, the distance the rock is transported by the explosive energy from the blast, also known as throw, can increase efficiency by reducing the amount of material that is re-handled by mine equipment. The primary situation in which this is desirable is the cast blasting of overburden across the narrow pit of a surface coal mine. A key variable in a blast design pattern that can be manipulated to optimize both fragmentation and throw is delay timing between detonations. The invention and increased utilization of electronic detonators has allowed for precise delay timings to be used between rows, holes, and even multiple primers within the same hole. These recent developments in the blasting community have also provided an opportunity to investigate whether or not the mechanism of shock or detonation wave collisions caused by short timing delays are responsible for any increased fragmentation or throw. This experiment attempts to demonstrate if an increase in throw can be achieved while maintaining optimum fragmentation. This study consisted of 3 full scale bench blasts at a granite quarry in Talbotton, GA. Each blast was characterized by the timing delay between the top and bottom primer in the blast column of each hole; one simultaneous blast with a 0 ms delay, a bottom-initiated blast with a 1 ms delay, and a top-initiated blast with a 1 ms delay. Fragmentation analysis of the resultant muckpiles was performed using a combination of the PortaMetrics handheld point-and-shoot rugged tablet from Motion Metrics and the software WipFrag from WipWare. Throw was measured by placing strategic distance markers on the floor of the bench and then taking overhead photographs of the muckpiles after each blast. High-speed video footage was captured of each blast using an MREL Blaster’s Ranger II camera."
