In underground metal/nonmetal mines, repeated localized short-term exposure to high levels of airborne contaminants can become a serious health issue. Currently, there are no common mechanisms to control or mitigate these short-term high exposures to contaminants. To improve miners’ health and safety, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is developing a smart monitoring and control (SMAC) system for the real-time monitoring of mine air quality, with integrated countermeasures to reduce high concentrations of airborne contaminants in localized sections of mines. To develop and test a SMAC system capable of being implemented in an underground mine, SMRD researchers built a test apparatus incorporating a fan, louver, ducting and sensors combined with atmospheric monitoring and control software. This system will institute effective countermeasures to reduce contaminant levels, improving miner safety and health.

The practice of impounding mine water and liquid fine waste in underground mines is increasing. Often these underground impoundments are created by constructing seals or bulkheads designed to withstand the expected hydraulic pressures. Occasionally seals are built for another purpose, usually to act as explosion-resistant ventilation barriers. Due to factors such as clogged drain pipes or unexpectedly high inflow rates, these explosion-resistant seals sometimes become subjected to hydraulic pressures. The incidence of seal failures due to inadequate design and/or construction is also on the increase. Fortunately, to date, no lives have been lost by water seal failures, but a clearer understanding of the design and construction considerations specific to water seals is vital to keep this from occurring in the future. This paper presents technical considerations for the design and construction of seals which will specifically be required to withstand hydraulic pressures in underground mines.

Based on the findings within their report to Congress, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it had decided not to regulate mining wastes under the hazardous waste regulatory program. However, they found that some mining wastes are hazardous and may be causing environmental damage. Cyanide wastes from heap leach operations were included in this group. In evaluating the effects of cyanide use in mining one finds a significant lack of information on the fate of cyanide in soils. Cyanide attenuation and degradation of soils is important, because ground water is a major potential pathway for cyanide contamination. There is a strong potential for cyanide to be removed from solutions as it migrates through soils· by volatilization, chemical reaction, adsorption, oxidation and biological processes, but no definitive investigation has defined these mechanisms adequately to be able to predict the fate of cyanide in soils.

5.1 TECHNOLOGY FOR INJECTING GROUT INTO BOREHOLES The grouting of fractured rock aquifers is carried out in separate stopes' whose size is determined by the hydro¬stratigraphy and the hydrogeologic properties of the rocks. The number of grouting stopes required depends on the number of intervals in the hydrogeological section. Each grouting stope can include one or several aquifers. Com¬bining several water-producing strata into one stope is pos¬sible only when the values of their permeability coefficients are very similar. In order to achieve efficiency, as many aquifers as possible are included in each stope. In practice, the length of a grouting stope in a borehole usually ranges within 10 to 40 m, but occasionally up to 100 m or more. When conducting grouting operations through boreholes drilled from the face of underground workings, the stope's size can be determined by the thick¬ness of each fractured zone (fault) or by the length of the hole if the entire rock is fractured. Injecting grout into separate intervals of fractured rock can be done from the bottom to the top with ascending stopes or from the top to the bottom with descending stopes. Injection from bottom to top is always preferred. Injection also can be accomplished in separate fractured permeable horizons in the section. The STG integrated grouting method is based on the use of packer and injection equipment and technological schemes that facilitate injection in highly isolated fractured aquifers. For this purpose STG has developed a standard series of packers. 5.1.1 INJECTING GROUT THROUGH BOREHOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Grout can be injected according to one of four techno¬logical schemes depending on the depth of the fractured aquifers, their hydrogeologic properties and the availability of grout injection equipment if the area is remote (Fig. 43). In the first and most preferred technological scheme (1), the grout is injected from the bottom up with ascending stopes. When this scheme is employed, grouting holes are drilled to the entire projected depth based on the field investigations injection tubes is installed above the top of the first hydrostratigraphic unit to be grouted. This scheme al¬lows the grout to be injected only into the permeable stra¬tum or strata isolated by the packer near the bottom of the hole; it precludes the need to clean or redrill the hole before injecting grout into the next overlying stope. This ascending stope scheme is preferred because of its simplicity and ef¬ficiency. It is used in most of the grouting of saturated fractured rock for the purpose of isolating aquifers while excavating deep mine shafts in the USSR. The second technological scheme (II in Fig. 43) injects the grout in sequence from top to bottom with descending stopes. Injection under this scheme is accomplished through the hermetically-sealed mouth of the hole. It is most advis¬able to grout with descending stopes in saturated fractured rock wherein the aquifers constitute thick networks of frac¬tures. Under these conditions it is practically impossible to drill a grout hole to the entire depth of the underground workings due to the large production rate of ground water. In conducting isolation operations with descending stopes, additional work (relative to ascending stopes) is necessary to drill out the grout in order to create and inject the next stope. As a result, the total amount of drilling required to drill out grout can even exceed the volume of drilling of original rock. Consequently it is advisable to use this inefficient scheme only for injecting grout into holes that contain prolific frac¬tured aquifers at depths less than 150 to 200 m. The third and fourth technological schemes (III and IV in Fig. 43) are used in the selective grouting of separate aquifers. For example, these methods would be applied when a grout hole is drilled to its entire depth, wherein grouting of the upper aquifers must be done first so that the sinking of the first shaft can begin prior to deeper grouting. The third technological scheme is used for the selective injection of grout into an aquifer with a thickness of up to 5 m. For this work the DAU-1-2 removable dual packer is installed. It is lowered into the borehole on an injection pipeline. For aquifers with thicknesses of more then 5 m, the selective injection of the grout is carried out according to the fourth technological scheme; a combination of the DAU-2 hydrodynamic plug and the DAU-1 packing device is used. In order to implement this injection scheme, the DAU-2 hydro-dynamic plug is installed at the bottom of the fractured aquifer and the DAU-1 packer is installed at the top of the aquifer.

The requirement for large diesel equipment to be certified for operation in potential gassy mine conditions in western oil shale mines motivated a design engineering project to develop a dry exhaust conditioner system to replace traditional wet scrubber technology. A dry exhaust conditioner for a 600 hp diesel engine was designed and fabricated for retrofitting into a 600 hp underground haul truck. The engine conditioner package was taken through a simulated certification process at the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Approval and Certification Center to refine test procedures and to uncover any flaws in the dry exhaust conditioner technology. The engine/exhaust system was then installed in an underground haul truck to demonstrate mine-worthiness of the system. No inherent features were discovered that would prevent the system from meeting test requirements. However, the tests did point out several deficiencies in the prototype design.

There are close to two million tons of Industrial Minerals processed and sold in North America wherein the processor/marketer has no affiliation with the source mine. The largest quantity, about 800,000 tons, is barium sulfate, which is sourced in lump ore form mainly from China and India. The Alumina Trihydrate Industry sources several hundred thousand tons from various alumina refineries. Substantial quantities of bauxite, zircon, magnesite, and fluorspar arrive in North American ports each month. There are also rapidly growing quantities of offshore talcs and calcium carbonate ores being processed in U.S. plants. These feedstocks are usually quite pure, have unique properties, and enjoy bulk rail or waterborne freight economies that allow successful competition with locally sourced raw materials. With increasing restrictions on mining activities, and the increasing need for sophisticated functional minerals, the importation of minerals will continue to grow.

Producing a sound plant design for a major project requires hundreds of engineers and many drawings. Economical accomplishment of this task is based upon careful and orderly organization of the design team so that at all times there is a complete and workable staff but at no time a surplus of costly talent. This paper will describe the various stages in the development of plant design which normally follow the laboratory and pilot plant investigations discussed in other papers today. An outline of the procedures used in the assembling of a project design group, within an established engineering organization will be presented. Actual procedures may vary according to the size and character of the plant, the special requirements of the owner, and the make-up of the engineering organization performing the design, but most of the points covered will be found to be basic to any plant design project.

For some time a need had existed in the minerals processing field for a relatively efficient separator that would treat high tonnages of particles in the intermediate size range, i.e., those particles too large for froth flotation and too small for conventional gravity-type separa¬tors. Among those devices developed to meet this need are the centrifu¬gal specific gravity separators. These devices employ centrifugal acceleration to assist gravitational acceleration in separating light¬density minerals from heavy-density minerals. In the category of centrifugal specific gravity separators are the heavy-media centrifugal separator and the water-only cyclone. The two major centrifugal heavy-media separators, i.e., the heavy-media cyclone and the DynaWhirlpool, as well as the water-only cyclone, are discussed in terms of: design features, operating variables, operat¬ing data, and flowsheet design criteria. Examples of plant applications are given in the field of coal processing as well as the processing of other minerals such as iron ores, potash, and tin. Finally, the subject of the staging of centrifugal separators and their use in combination with other separators is discussed. PRINCIPLES For coarse sizes of minerals, efficient specific gravity separations have been possible for many years with open-bath vessels using the natural settling velocity or buoyancy of the particles. These bath ves¬sels process ore by utilizing micron-size solid particles suspended in the slurry fed to the separator. The inclusion of these particles in the slurry increases the effective density of the separating fluid to allow particle separations to be made at densities greater than that of water. However, if vessel size is to remain within economical limits, the particles processed in the bath vessel must have high settling rates in a IG gravitational field. Because of this requirement, heavy¬medium bath vessels are usually restricted to processing +V4-in. sizes. To extend efficient specific gravity separation to smaller sizes, the gravitational acceleration of particles is replaced by centrifugal acceleration. The settling of a small particle in a fluid in a centrifugal force field is similar to that found in a static bath except that the acceleration due to gravity, g, is replaced by a centrifugal acceleration where v, is the tangential velocity at radius r: V=kdm(P-P,), V'. (J) µ In more practical terms where the particles settle in a suspension of finer particles comprising the heavy media and with an effective suspension density p" V = kdm' (P P ) . v'. (2) U r To date the most effective use of this principle has been obtained with devices that rotate a liquid or suspension within a stationary enclosure in order to create centrifugal force. Cyclones are the most common devices used for this purpose, because they generate centrifu¬gal forces far greater than the force of gravity and therefore not only have high capacities but can treat finer sizes than bath-type vessels can. The two main types of cyclones used by industry are the heavy-media cyclone and the water-only cyclone. Also quite widely used is the DynaWhirlpool, which, though based on the same princi¬ple, differs in design from the conventional cyclone. HEAVY-MEDIA CENTRIFUGAL SEPARATORS Like the bath vessels, the heavy-media centrifugal separators em¬ploy media composed of micron-size particles suspended in water. However, the centrifugal force generated in these separators accentu¬ates the difference in settling rate between particles of different density and thus makes possible separations of finer size particles than can be treated in bath vessels. The two most common heavy-media centri¬fugal separators are the heavy-media cyclone and the DynaWhirlpool. Heavy-Media Cyclone Although cyclones were originally developed for use as classifiers or thickeners, it was later found that they could also effectively serve as heavy-media separators.63. 64, Design Features Fig. I I is a schematic of a typical cyclone developed to serve for any one of the following purposes: as a classifier, thickener, or specific gravity separator. The cyclone consists of a cylindrical section joined to a conical section, usually having an included angle of between 14° and 25°. Feed enters the cyclone tangentially through an orifice attached to the cylindrical section. The overflow orifice is located in the base plate of the cylindrical section. The vortex finder, a tube attached to the overflow orifice, extends into the cyclone from the base plate of the cylindrical section. The underflow orifice is located at the apex of the conical section. As some medium together with mineral particles is fed through the feed orifice, a vortex with a hollow air core extending from the overflow to the underflow orifice forms in the cyclone while hollow spray discharges form at each of these orifices. Under the influence of the centrifugal force, high specific-gravity particles move through the medium to the wall of the cyclone and descend in a spiral flow pattern to the underflow orifice. Those particles in the feed stream, lower in specific gravity than the feed medium, follow the major portion of the flow to the center of the core where they are caught in the high-velocity upward central current and are carried out through the overflow orifice. Fig. 12 shows a family of curves that illustrates how materials of varying specific gravity are recovered by a cyclone. Since the specific gravity of the medium is 1.40, the particles of 1.40 sp gr actually act as part of the medium and, regardless of the particle size, split between the underflow and overflow of the cyclone in proportion to the volume split of the medium. Particles higher in specific gravity than 1.40 are recovered in the underflow of the cyclone at increasing rates as the difference in specific gravity increases and the particle size increases. Particles lower than 1.40 in specific gravity are dis¬charged through the overflow orifice at increasing rates as the specific¬gravity difference increases and the particle size increases. However, all the curves originate at the fluid-flow ratio point for the finest particles of any gravity. The adsorption of silver on activated carbon from cyanide solutions was studied as a function of concentration, ionic strength and pH. In cyanide solutions, silver exists mainly as the linear Ag(CN)2 complex and adsorbs on activated carbon following the Freundlich isotherm. The uptake and rate of adsorption increase with the addition of KC1 and KNO3 but changes only slightly with pH. In contrast, the adsorption of Cu(I), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) shows marked changes with pH, closely following the predominance profiles of their neutral and singly-charged cyano complexes. Clearly, multicharged negative complexes are repelled by the negatively-charged carbon surface. This sensitivity of activated carbon to the charge of the adsorbing species indicates that silver adsorbs as an anion, not chemically bound to the co-adsorbing counterions. For the same reason, activated carbon is selective to metals that form neutral and Singly-charged cyano complexes, namely gold and silver.

One of the most important considerations in the efficient operation of an under¬ground mine is the haulage system. Often the determining factor between profit or loss is the quick removal of ore and waste from the working places to secondary and main-line haulage areas, and so on to the outside. Important, too, is moving supplies from the surface to the working faces so that the loading process can continue with little interruption. Men must he transported in a rapid but safe manner. It has been through the efficient use and generally the combination of mine cars, track, belt conveyors and rubber-tired haulage equipment that underground operations have been able to compete with the more popular strip or surface mining. As near-surface ore bodies are exhausted, underground haulage will play an expanding part in economically furnishing the world's needs for all types of minerals. The choice of underground haulage equipment, wherever possible, should be one that will give the smallest overall cost of ore removal during the life of the mine while meeting necessary safety requirements. The reader is referred to Sec. 12 for equipment such as scrapers and load-dump-¬haul units that perform loading as well as haulage duties. 14.1-MINE CARS AND TRACK NILES E. GROSVENOR Main-Line and Secondary Haulage-Many mines today use a combination of belt and rail haulage. Even if a- belt system is used to carry the product from the face to the surface, track is used to transport workmen and supplies. A track system, when properly installed, will provide interruption-free and safe haulage. Schrecengost 2 lists the following as major advantages of track haulage: 1. Safety in transporting men in and out of the mine in personnel cars. 2. Easy and rapid transportation of supervisory personnel. 3. A temporary shutdown occasioned by a roof fall or power failure along the haulage system will not shut down the production areas. 4. Quick availability of repair parts and supplies. 5. Large pieces of coal or rock can be handled without damage to the haulage equipment. 6. In areas where quality fluctuates noticeably, different cars may be separated out for special preparation. 7. Rock or equipment may be loaded and moved out of the mine without interference with the production or preparation of the coal. 14.1.1-MINE CARS Mine cars with steel bodies are used in all types of present-day mining. Wooden cars usually are more bulky and less resistant to wear and damage, but are more easily repaired. Regardless of the type of mine car selected, it is most practical to standardize on one type or make to simplify repairs and limit the amount of spare parts necessary to stock. Rigid-body flat-bottomed cars are simpler and usually lower than others of equal capacity. Advantages are: ease of loading because of the low sides, simplicity, cheapness and high ratio of capacity to weight. The disadvantages include the

Grinding balls, simple in shape, are actually sophisticated machine components, and essential elements of mineral grinding mills. Their physical properties and quality must be adequate to achieve design life and grinding mission with few failures. Consistant properties and freedom from breakage are essential. Size, mass, hardness profile, chemistry, and microstructure are important variables which should be designed, specified, controlled, and verified to achieve optimal mill performance. Failure to specify ball properties in detail or failure to obtain required ball properties and quality can cause milling productivity losses and excessive costs that could endanger a milling operations survival in the competive mineral industry.

The paper describes a technique by which large concrete boxes are unobtrusively inserted beneath existing highway and railway infrastructure to form new subways, culverts and under-bridges, thus avoiding the inconvenience and costs of disruption to traffic associated with traditional cut and cover techniques. A series of project examples, undertaken in the United Kingdom and United States, are used to illustrate the design and construction of the box structures, together with the technology required to control ground disturbance in the tunnel face and around the box, and the jacking systems necessary for box installation.

An investigation an4 analysis of slip/fall accidents specifically pertaining to underground coal mines was conducted. From a population of 751 accident reports, three major sources of injury which account for over 80% of the incidents have been identified. The specifics of this study are presented in this paper. Based on the results, several recommendations are made to reduce such accidents in underground mines. In addition, a brief discussion of the slip-hazard analysis laboratory at the University of Utah, which will be useful in future analyses of these accidents is presented. Work in this facility includes the simulation of certain mining activities in a controlled setting. Foot forces are measured and work methods subsequently developed to minimize the slip potential of these activities.

"INTRODUCTIONThe shales of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) have been known to experience time-dependent deformations (TDD); those initiated by excavation-induced stress relief which progress with time as a function of rock porewater salinity, access to freshwater (or air) of lower salinity, clay and calcite content, and the buildup of swelling pressures within the rock mass. These deformations can induce long-term pressures on shaft walls and tunnel linings, especially if the permanent works are constructed soon after excavation, with very little time delay. This paper presents measurements of time dependent deformation of recent shaft and tunnel projects constructed in the GTA, and draws conclusions regarding the main influences on the TDD. The key input parameters for the numerical predictive model are critically assessed. Projects which are discussed include the Billy Bishop Airport Pedestrian Tunnel, Hydro One Midtown Tunnel and Hanlan Feedermain (Contract 3).MECHANISM OF TIME DEPENDENT DEFORMATIONExplanation of MechanismThe Georgian Bay Shale unit consists of typically moderately weathered to fresh, grey to dark grey, fine to very fine grained fissile shale interbedded with slightly weathered to fresh grey, fine grained calcareous siltstone and limestone interbeds. There are two distinctive features of the shale in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). One is a high horizontal stress regime, and the second is long-term time dependent swelling behavior which develops when the following factors occur (Lo and Micic, 2010):• Stress relief of the rock mass• Outward salt concentration gradient from pore fluid of the rock to the ambient fluid• Availability of fresh waterThe swelling is a consequence of the reduction in confined stress in the rock which occurs upon excavation in combination with a differential gradient in salinity between the saline rock porewater and freshwater or even humid air. Osmotic and diffusive processes result in a decrease in the salinity of the rock porewater achieved by an overall increase in the water content, resulting in volumetric expansion of the shale rock over time. The bacterial oxidation of arsenopyrite has been shown to be an efficient, economic and environmentally acceptable method for the liberation of any gold content . The mechanism of the process is not certain but is usually considered to involve direct and indirect reactions with respect to bacterial involvement. The direct reactions are those in which the bacteria attached to the mineral surface cause its dissolution, with dioxygen being the oxidant. The iron(III) produced in solution is the chemical oxidant in the so-called indirect reactions. Barrett et al 2 showed that a synthetic bio-oxidation solution (with no cells present) could dissolve up to 15% of an arsenopyrite sample, the products of the chemical oxidation being iron(II) and arsenic(III). This paper describes an extension of the investigation of the chemical process and its imp! ication for the mechanism of the bio-oxidation of arsenopyrite.

Caro's acid (peroxymonosulfuric acid-H2SO5) is used to destroy cyanides in tailings slurries due to its rapid reaction and low capital and operating costs. Due to its instability, Caro's acid is generated at the mine site using a hot or cold process. The majority of gold mines that use Caro's acid use the FMC hot process. In the FMC hot process, it is not necessary to cool the Caro's acid to minimize decomposition since it is used immediately upon generation. In contrast, the cold process uses a chiller to cool the raw materials and product. This paper will show, using laboratory and field data, that there is virtually no difference in Caro's acid yield between the cold and the FMC hot processes. Caro's acid yield depends on the mole ratio and concentration of sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide and is independent of operating temperature.

The life cycle assessment and the performance of pine fence posts treated with water borne preservatives and oils after 18 years exposure in ground contact were examined in this study. Vacuum CCB treated fence posts were subsequently treated at their lowest part (ground contact) with creosote using the open hot and cold tank process and exposed under warm dry temperate climatic conditions in Greece. After 18 years exposure, samples were taken from the above ground contact, top, middle and ground contact and tested for toughness using a Denison single blow impact bending test machine. There was no significant reduction of toughness in any of these zones. Chemical analysis of the residual CCB of unexposed and exposed samples by ICP showed that copper and chromium losses were insignificant while boron losses were significant (more than 50% of the initial content). This was attributed to an effect of creosote treatment.

In mining operations, conveyors hold one of the most important keys to productivity. Sudden belt or belt-splice failures and extended repair downtimes can contribute to low material-handling system availability. Consequently, operations and maintenance personnel should have a thorough understanding of the available splicing and repair alternatives and how each method can affect the productivity and cost-effectiveness of their operation. The two primary methods of joining belt ends - vulcanization and mechanical fastening - affect the likelihood of sudden failure and repair times in different ways. The time-honored method of vulcanization remains popular in many conveyor-intensive underground and above-ground mining operations around the world. At first, vulcanization may seem attractive because, when done properly by trained and experienced craftsmen, it can match the original belting fairly closely and give the splice a smooth, continuous surface with no edges or seams to invite snagging.

Diesel engines are used in underground mining 1 throughout the world. Exhaust gases from those engines contain toxic components. To protect quality in underground mines, diesel emission control was introduced decades ago, many years before the first surface applications. Today, emission controls, such as catalytic converters, are standard on underground diesel engines in countries concerned with occupational safety and health. Nett Technologies manufactures a range of diesel emission-control devices for underground mining. Emission problems are not the same at each mining operation. And there is no universal control technology. The selection of exhaust aftertreatment technology depends on raw exhaust emissions, particular emission problems, fuel quality and economics. Some of the technologies that have been used in underground mining to control diesel emissions include catalytic converters, diesel filters, fume diluters and water scrubbers. Table 1 compares the effectiveness of these technologies to control the particular components or aspects of diesel emissions.

Formalized technical audits for mining machinery during manufacturing are a fairly new concept to the North American mining industry. Although used extensively elsewhere, especially in Australia, the concept of independent auditing of machinery design and manufacturing has been slow to gain acceptance in the United States and Canada. Simply stated, a technical audit is an independent, third-party review of all or specific portions of machinery design, manufacturing and assembly to verify compliance with purchase specifications and suitability of the machinery for the specified application. If specified correctly, the useful life of different kinds of structural and mechanical components can be extended beyond normally accepted usage. There is no reason why, if properly designed and built for the application, major structural components on mining machinery cannot be made to last for 20 years before being rebuilt. Also, gearing can be made to routinely last for 15 years.
