Samarium (Sm), one of the rare earth elements (REEs), and cobalt (Co) are used in the production of SmCo permanent magnets, which have excellent temperature stability, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. Of the two types of SmCo magnets, one contains a high amount of iron, approximately 15.2 percent. This paper focuses on the recycling of iron (Fe)-bearing SmCo. In this study, an oxidative leaching process with nitric acid was developed to eliminate iron through in situ hydrolysis and to dissolve REEs and Co. The influence of experimental conditions on the formation of an amorphous iron compound through the hydrolysis of Fe3+ in a nitric acid environment was thoroughly examined based on a Taguchi orthogonal array. The optimal parameters for oxidative leaching were determined to be an acid concentration of 3 mol/L, a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1/10, and a process temperature of 60 °C.

One of the major problems for us in the earthmoving industry is the analysis of materials under the ground surface. Countless engineering and construction jobs would be simplified if there were an inexpensive and fast way to obtain information on problems such as: Depth and solidith of bedrock? Nature of the materials between bedrock and the surface? Adequate foundation for bridges and drainage structures? Location of supplies of materials to be used in construction? Investigation of tunnel sites? Characteristics of swampy areas and investigation of existing and potential slide areas? These questions are of paramount interest to highway contractors as they bid jobs and plan, equipment spreads to handle them at optimum efficiency. Such information also is invaluable to engineers in the design and construction of bridges, buildings, railroads, canals, and tunnels.

"Sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the biggest difference. In the world of mining, erosion can lead to small cracks, which can then lead to bigger problems that, over time, can eventually lead to a catastrophic event. However, when managed correctly, as in the case of the Manefey Slide at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, the damage can be minimized.Numerous industry conferences, technical papers, studies and resources are dedicated to these issues each year, but what is sometimes overlooked is how the erosion of personal ethics can also have life-changing effects.At the 2019 SME Minnesota Conference, April 15-17 in Duluth, MN, two inmates serving their respective prison sentences at the U.S. Federal Prison Camp in Duluth spoke to the conference about how small cracks in their ethical foundations grew over time, eventually leading each man to his new address at the minimum-security facility.The men’s full names were not released and they were introduced as Jeff and Tony. Other than the matching green uniforms, both middle-aged men could have fit in with the rest of the crowd. They are well-educated and articulate whose career paths eroded thanks to greed and careless decisions.Tony, a licensed professional engineer, enjoyed a successful career working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense. Jeff is a former senior vice president of investments who ran a well-respected investment management team. Both spoke openly about the mistakes they made and emphasized that their crimes were not flagrant violations of the black and white rules but grew from ethical violations that live in the gray area between black and white, and right and wrong.Working in contract oversight for the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), Tony said he was befriended by a wealthy man who was generous with his money. As Tony told it, a few meals with this man led to a few trips to casinos and eventually to gifts of money. The donor did not ask for anything in return, and at the time, Tony said he did not think that he was doing anything wrong. He admits now that the perception of a high-ranking officer in the DOD accepting gifts is not a good one, as it could be construed as the donor might have been trying to gain favor for future contracts; which is how it was presented in court by the prosecution team."

The leaching kinetic of mechanically activated sphalerite with acid FeCl3 solution was investigated. The result has shown that mechanical pre-treatment has greatly enhanced the leaching process. Comparing with the original concentrate, the activated one can be leached more completely at relatively lower temperature with diluter FeCl3 concentration within a shorter leaching time. The activation energy for the activated concentrate is 27 KJ/mol, while for the original one is 52 KJ/mol.

"The Colorado School of Mines has used the Edgar Mine in Idaho Springs as an experimental mine to teach students since 1921. Since the school acquired the former gold, silver, lead and zinc mine, countless students have received hands-on engineering lessons on their way to earning mining engineering degrees. On Dec. 14, the House Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a historic field hearing about the future of mining education in the United States in a classroom about 300 m (1,000 ft) inside the Edgar Mine. Representatives Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Rob Bishop (R-UT), Cresent Hardy (R-NV) and Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) were on hand for the first ever congressional hearing held in a mine where they heard testimony supporting the Mining School Enhancement Act, which was introduced to Congress by Hardy and Perlmutter on Oct. 9, 2015. The act, which is part of a larger mining development and reclamation reform package, seeks to address the absence of a viable pipeline necessary to replenish current faculty vacancies in United States Mining Schools. “What better place to hold a hearing to discuss the need for future mining engineering experts,” Subcommittee Chair Lamborn said in his opening statement. “It is a need felt by industry, states, the federal government as well as nonprofits.” The Mining School Enhancement Act would redirect millions of dollars in fees that are being collected from active mining operations to fund the research and educational programs at engineering schools with mining programs. Those fees now are being used in the form of grants awarded by the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMRCA)."

"The mining industry suffers from a number of incorrect perceptions, one of which is that it is an outdated industry that has not changed for hundreds of years. But the truth of the matter is that mining is a vibrant, highly complex industry that not only employs highly skilled and educated professionals but is also often on the cutting edge of technology. It is an industry with projects that are ever-evolving and among the most challenging engineering feats in the world.Take for instance the U.S. 53 Highway Relocation project in Virginia, MN. While more of a civil engineering job than a traditional mining project, it is still a complex engineering challenge taking place in a mining environment that has called on the skills of eight state agencies, three federal agencies, a host of contractors and many consultants, including many from the local mining industry in the Iron Range of Minnesota.In 1960, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) constructed U.S, Highway 53 on a private easement owned by US Steel that cut across a massive taconite deposit. MnDOT constructed the highway with the agreement that if the highway needed to be moved to access the taconite deposit before 1987, US Steel would foot the bill. And if the move was required after 1987, the responsibility would fall to MnDOT. In 2010, MnDOT received the notice that the highway would have to move as property owner United Taconite planned to access the ore, setting in motion one of the greatest engineering challenges, and the highest risk project, in the history of the states’ transportation department.Pat Huston, U.S. Highway 53 Relocation project manager, opened the 90th SME Minnesota Section Conference in Duluth, MN on April 19 with a presentation about the project that includes 5 km (3.2 miles) of fourlane highway and a new 345-m (1,132-ft) bridge that will be the tallest in Minnesota when it is completed later this year.“This project was not business as usual,” Huston told the packed crowd. “Highway 53 connects Canada and the Iron Range to Duluth and Lake Superior. Underground mining operating costs consist pri¬marily of direct costs such as labor, supervision, ma¬terials, and supplies, plus indirect costs. The material and supply costs vary substantially between mines but commonly range from 35 to 60% of the total direct costs. As part of the preparation of accurate operating cost estimates for a project, information must be as¬sembled to select the material and supply items and to determine the quantities of these items that will be required. Cost data then can be incorporated with the estimated material and supply requirements to determine the total material and supply costs for the project. Estimated quantities will vary considerably between mining projects depending upon factors such as the type of material being mined, the mining method, the equip¬ment selected, drilling and blasting techniques, mucking and haulage methods, ground support requirements, number of men employed, etc. Valuable information often can be obtained from suppliers and manufacturers, including data on current operating practices for similar projects, recommenda¬tions for the specific project, and preliminary cost quota¬tions. However, quotations obtained for estimates are generally higher than the prices paid at the time of purchase. Mines operating in the area, or those mining under similar conditions, also can provide essential design information, but it often is difficult to obtain cost information from the operators. Estimated costs for the most common major items of underground materials and supplies are presented in the accompanying tables. They represent current costs or cost ranges and are intended to be used only as a guide when preparing budgetary estimates for materials and supplies. Cost data were obtained mainly from suppliers and manufacturers, with up to three quotations being ob¬tained for each item whenever possible. In most cases, as noted in the table footnotes, prices were based on quantities representing normal requirements for me¬dium-size mine operations. Every attempt was made to assure accuracy. However, the cost for most items, especially those with multiple sources, can deviate sig¬nificantly for various reasons such as geographical loca¬tion, current market conditions, quantities ordered, size of the customer (which could influence the ultimate quantities purchased), and the ability of the purchasing department. It is also for these reasons that the actual amount individual mines are now paying for specific items may vary from the estimated cost in the tables. The cost for specific sizes of items that do not appear in the tables often can be factored from the data pre¬sented. Costs for many items can be converted easily to a unit that sometimes is more basic, but not as com¬monly used, such as from a length to a weight unit. Other items not listed, such as repair parts for equip¬ment, will involve contact with suppliers to determine specific recommended requirements and to obtain costs for these items as related to each individual project. Costs are expressed in terms of US dollars as of 1978 unless otherwise specified. All measurements, sizes, and weights are expressed in conventional units (i.e. feet, inches, pounds) ; applicable metric conversion fac¬tors follow each table. Costs are represented for drill steel and bits; mining explosives; blasting caps; blasting supplies; ground sup¬port items; ventilation equipment; utility pipe, utility hose, and accessories; mine track and accessories; tires for underground equipment; lubricants and fuels; and miscellaneous supplies.

Introduction Occurrences of platinum group minerals (PGM) in mafic and ultramafic rocks in association with Cu-Ni mineralization are well known. Yet for the Duluth Complex, a large body of dominantly mafic igneous rocks in northeastern Minnesota with significant Cu-Ni mineralization (Bonnichsen, 1972; Boucher, 1975; Watowich, 1978; Weiblen and Morey, 1980), little has been published concerning its platinum group element (PGE) contents and mineralogy. In a previous study of massive sulfide rock, sperrylite (PtAs2) was found in nickel arsenide and recovery of arsenide minerals by flotation has been investigated (Iwasaki et al., 1986; Ryan and Weiblen, 1984). Recently, an announcement was made of the discovery of significant quantities of platinum and palladium [peak assay values of 9 g/t (0.27 oz per st)] in an interval of a drill core with disseminated sulfide mineralization 16 km (10 miles) southeast of Ely, MN (Anon, 1985; Sabelin, 1985). This paper describes PGM from the Pt-Pd-enriched zone and evaluates their potential for concentration. Geologic setting The Pt-Pd zone occurs in the South Kawishiwi in¬trusion near its basal contact at 734 to 737 m (2408 to 2418 ft) depth. The South Kawishiwi is one of several minor mafic intrusions that constitute the western margin of the Duluth Complex near Ely, MN (Fig. 1). It is com¬prised of a 70.1- to 350.5-m (230- to 1150-ft) thick sul¬fide-bearing basal unit of troctolite with minor amounts of anorthosite, norite, picrite, and oxide layers overlain by a troctolite unit with interlayered anorthosite (Bonnichsen et al., 1980; Foose, 1984; and Foose and Weiblen, 1986). The basal unit, in which the Pt-Pd zone is found, is markedly heterogeneous in rock type, lacking any coherent internal stratigraphy, and shows evidence of both pre- and post-consolidation faulting (Foose and Weiblen, 1986). Geochemistry Chemical analyses were made on 0.3-m (1-ft) intervals of crushed drill core material (1/4 core, BX size) at 731.5 to 740.7 m (2400 to 2430 ft) depth and the results are presented in Fig. 2. The analytical techniques used were atomic absorption spectrometry for silver, chromium, copper, and nickel; a coulometric titration method for sulfur; and a combined fire assay-DC plasma technique for gold, palladium, and platinum. Figure 2 shows the significant enrichment of platinum and palladium at 734 to 737 m (2408 to 2418 ft) depth; it corresponds to a stratigraphic interval rich in oxide minerals. Average values for platinum and palladium contents over the 3-m (10-ft) interval are 2520 and 2580 ppb, respectively, or 5.1 g/t (0.15 oz per st) platinum plus palladium. Platinum plus palladium contents from individual 0.3-m (1-ft) intervals are as high as 9120 ppb or 9.1 g/t (0.27 oz per st) and average 7.4 g/t (0.22 oz per st) in a 1.5-m (5-ft) interval in the richest part of the zone. The Pt-to-Pd ratio is nearly 1:1 over the entire 9.1-m (30-ft) interval and the platinum and palladium correlate closely with chromium, which ranges from 1.9% to 5.3%. Copper, nickel, and sulfur contents for the drill core interval are also given in Fig. 2. In¬terestingly, the Pt-Pd high corresponds to a depletion in copper, nickel, and sulfur. In recent years, there has been a growing realization of the importance of ground water as a national resource and increasing concern that this resource be properly managed and protected from a variety of pervasive practices that endanger it. Aquifers have been adversely affected in every region of the country. In dealing w.ith the underground water program, EPA will have the following objectives: to protect human health, and to protect and conserve an important national resource. In pursuing these objectives, EPA will take economic consequences and other national objectives (e.g., energy) into account. EPA intends to pursue these objectives in full partnership with the States. Generally the States should retain the lead in protecting ground water.

The Kaldo furnace is a type of top-blown, rotary reactor that is widely used for the production of precious metals. During the production of doré, a gas jet of compressed air is injected through a water-cooled lance to impinge upon the molten bath surface in the presence of molten metal and a slag phase. A common problem during operation is the difficulty in controlling the distance that the injection lance can penetrate through the reactor mouth without being splashed by the molten phases. Splashing may produce accretions on the lance surface as well as plugging of the nozzle at the lance tip. An additional problem may occur when the gas jet impinges upon the furnace wall and causes rapid wearing of the refractory linings. Because the conditions prevailing in the Kaldo furnace offers poor visibility to the human eye, its operation mostly relies on the empirical knowledge of plant operators and process engineers. A systematic study in a scale model of the Kaldo furnace under controlled laboratory conditions may be valuable to estimate the maximum penetration distance of the injection lance, and thus help improve the operation of an industrial reactor. From a fundamental perspective, the observation of the basic features of the flow patterns in the scale model may help elucidate the relevant phenomena governing the hydrodynamics in this type of system.

Significant effort has been expended and considerable success has been realized m the application of instrumentation and automatic control equipment in the mining and ore processing industries. This effort has been applied principally to process equipment with the objective of increasing throughput, minimizing labor requirements and/or improving grade or product quality. Less spectacular, but quite rewarding has been the successful application of instrumentation and automatic control equipment to a wide variety of material handling equipments. This paper describes some of this work including: (1) automatic weighment of load-haul-dump units and trams underground; (2) automation of skip loading; (3) instrumentation applied in feeders and conveyors; (4) level measurement in bins, silos, vessels and sumps; (5) automatic blending of sized materials; (6) automatic loading of ships, trains and trucks; (7) automatic control of tailings disposal facilities

The RiverRenew Tunnel System project in Alexandria, VA forms part of a CSO scheme aimed at reducing overflows of combined stormwater and sewage into the Potomac River during storm events. A major piece of the project is a 12-foot internal diameter tunnel of approximately 12,000 feet length lined with a single-pass precast concrete segmental liner and excavated by an Earth-Pressure Balanced Shield TBM. The tunnel lies between 120 to 140 feet below grade in the clays of the Upper Potomac Formation with occasional dips of more granular, saturated soils of the Terrace Formation and the Alluvium. The TBM is launched from a figure-8 configuration Pumping/Screening Shaft located within AlexRenew’s operational Water Resource Recovery Facility. This paper discusses the challenges encountered during the launch of the TBM in short mode within a highly congested site and from narrow deep shafts.

"Keep calm and carry on mining. That has long been the conventional wisdom in the mining industry, a largely cyclical one that has weathered roller-coaster booms and busts. But in the years from 2002 to 2016, an unprecedented steep rise in commodities prices that lasted a decade and then took a sharp turn downward had made it hard for gold and silver miners to stay the course.“The last 15 years highlighted some of the structural and inherent challenges that our industry has, from product price uncertainty to long lead times to the capital intensity of our business,” said Mitchell Krebs, president and chief executive officer of Coeur Mining, who was the luncheon speaker at the American Exploration & Mining Association’s 122nd Annual Meeting held Dec. 5-9, 2016, in Reno, NV.Looking back, Krebs said, “We were given this enormous gift of a commodities super cycle, and the industry kind of blew the opportunity.” While gold prices rose 319 percent and silver prices rose more than 200 percent over the 2002 to 2016 period, the XAU index of 30 gold and silver mining companies’ stock prices went up by only 20 percent.Entering 2016, precious-metals prices have made a comeback, with gold rallying strongly from a six-year low at the start of the year. This time, the industry is ready. Companies are leaner and meaner, with lower costs, reduced debt and an increased focus on higher grades and quality ounces. Although opportunities were missed in the past, the industry has got its act together and is now well positioned to take advantage of a price upswing and even to show profits when prices fall, as they did in August 2016, pushed down by a strong dollar."

"So many talks, so little time.One of the toughest challenges associated with attending the SME Annual Conference and Expo is deciding how to allocate one’s resources. After accounting for keynote and plenary sessions, committee meetings, networking events, luncheons and exhibits, attending even one of the 109 technical sessions and more than 600 technical paper presentations can be a labor of love. Many, however, managed to make it to many of the sessions, including the mineral and metallurgical processing technical session on solvent extraction, ion exchange and electrowinning.At one point, that room was seated to near capacity, with a considerable number of the audience members standing by the walls at the back. Brittany Valera of Freeport-McMoRan Inc. was one who came early and enjoyed the session in its entirety. "Everything was pretty exciting," she said. "I really liked the modular plants. I think the future of mining, just like what we talked about in there, lies in thinking about things like remote locations, lifetimes of plants, anything that would be reusable and sustainable; and lower-cost and user-friendly would be really beneficial."Michael Moats, associate professor of metallurgical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, started off the session by presenting on behalf of post-doctoral student Alex Luyima, who, like many before him, had been snapped up by industry and is now working for a secondary-metals refining company in Texas. Their team studied the nucleation and growth mechanism of copper on stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate in the absence and presence of chloride ions and three commercial organic additives: Hydrostar 4208, DXG-F7 and Cyquest N-900. Currenttime data were analyzed using known models, with reference to scanning electron microscope images. Good agreement was achieved between the models and SEM micrographs of deposits at a commercially relevant current density of 30 mA/ cm2. The addition of 20 mg/L chloride was found to increase the size and reduce the number of nuclei. The addition of 2.5 mg/L of each additive did not change the mechanism, but all three reduced the size and increased the number of nuclei, leading to more uniform coverage of the substrate with smoother deposits produced in twohour electrowinning experiments. N-900 had the best deposition coverage while DXG-7 was the easiest to dissolve."

In July 1968, P.T. Inco Indonesia was granted a Contract of Work to explore and develop the nickel laterite resources on the southeastern peninsula of the island of Sulawesi. Since 1970, exploration has centred on the deposits at Soroako as the site for initial project development. This paper describes the exploration methods used to evaluate these rather unique laterite deposits, the geology of which is described in the first section of this volume.

The most promising near-term alternative to fuel cell driven vehicles is probably Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV or EV) technology. HEV technology combines the best characteristics of fuel-driven engines, electric motor drives, and energy storage components. It is designed with a combustion engine that functions as the primary power source, and an electric power storage system that functions as the secondary power source. The presence of the secondary power source allows designers to size the combustion engine for cruising power requirements. A new energy source for HEV or EV market will become lithium ion batteries (LIBs) in the near future. LIBs for HEV or EV has large scale about more 10,000 times than small size one for IT devices in order to achieve high electric density/capacity and high efficiency, etc. In those reasons, physical treatment of the batteries is more difficult for stable dismantling in comparison with the smaller one. Hybrid vehicle sales will grow by nearly 400 percent during the next seven years, according to a new report from analyst firm ABI Research. By 2013 hybrids will make up 6 percent of annual U.S. auto sales. The traction battery pack will become air-cooled LIBs which consists of several modules of Li ion battery and connected in series/parallel configuration to provide about >450 VDC, >150 kW peak power, and >80 Ah capacity. As the use of these batteries tends to increase significantly for the next years, it is relevant issues that development of new recycling methods as well as optimization of existing processes to treat spent LIBs for HEV have being addressed in order to obtain sustainability. In this study, physical treatment containing stable electrical discharge of spent LIBs for HEV was carried out for recovery of valuable metals from the batteries. Also In order to increase the yield of valuable metals through physical treatments such as electric discharge of spent batteries, crushing, and classification, we also focused on the recovery of cobalt from +8 mesh fraction due to its large portion in crushed intermediates.

This proposal, based on the CIEMAN Cajamarca - Hualgayoc initiative, focuses on “Transforming Abandoned Mine Lands’’ We aim to study and assess the feasibility of an innovative rehabilitation method. Contaminated soils will be moved from the upper to the lower site, encapsulated with geosynthetic barriers, and covered with topsoil. The decontaminated upper area will be used for planting trees and large-stemmed plants for hiking and tourism, while the lower encapsulated area will support livestock and short- stemmed crops. This study will evaluate the economic viability and multi-use potential of this technique, promoting sustainable land recovery in Cajamarca, Peru.

The Henderson Mine, a new large scale underground development, is being developed by AMAX. The mine site is located about 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado, adjacent to the east side of the Continental Divide. The mine's three access shafts are in a narrow alpine canyon at an elevation of 10,400 feet. The ore body of molybdenite is to the south of the shafts, 3,000 feet below the surface of nearby Red Mountain. The ore extends over 800 feet vertically and is about 1,700 feet by 2,200 feet horizontally. The eastern and southeastern boundaries of the deposit are still to be defined at the present time. Development mining is advancing at the mine site on a three shift, seven-day basis at the rate of about 2,000 feet per month. About twelve miles of heading have been driven at the present time, and work to sink No. 3 Shaft has started. Development mining was begun in 1967 with the sinking of No. 1 Shaft. This shaft is fully concreted, 23 feet in diameter and 2,441 feet in depth. It is the mine ventilation exhaust conduit. It is also used for development muck hoisting, stand-by mine water pumping and secondary access to the 8,035 foot level. This level is the mine exhaust ventilation level and was mined principally by conventional rail mining methods. From this one station at the 8,035 foot elevation a 5% ramp was driven to the initial production horizon at 8,100 feet with diesel rubber tired mining equipment. Subsequent mining has been entirely by mobile diesel equipment at the mine site.
