State geological surveys promote sound procedures for evaluation of mineral resources before development-procedures that protect the environment and accrue maximum benefit to citizens. Sophisticated laboratories have been equipped for geophysical, geochemical, petrographic, and mineralogic characterization of materials to assist citizens in land-use planning and optimum development of natural resources, activities clearly within purview of the state. Proper use of these facilities in support of exploration in a competitive, free-enterprise system should be based on achieving ultimate benefits to the public, but, in general, should not entail competition with commercial laboratories.

"The aim of this study is to give a better understanding for the performance of the composite material RRS and the synergy effect of its components under different stress regimes and while an excavation face advances during tunneling. The lower part of the Q-system scale (i.e. Q-values of 0.4 or less for a tunnel span of 10m) is commonly used for tunnel applications in softer rock formations. This is implied in the updated Q-chart, where the dimensioning of rock support by using Reinforced Ribs of Shotcrete (RRS) comprises the use of fiber reinforced shotcrete, S(fr), rock bolts and shotcreted beams reinforced with steel rebars. In this study, an effort has been made to simulate RRS in a numerical code and to study its behaviour in a real case study. A double tube, triple lane tunnel in weathered tuff has been chosen as reference material for testing RRS under changing load. A rather extensive parametric study has been run by using the same key input rock mass parameters and three different in situ stress regimes (sH/sv =2, sH/sv =1 and sH/sv =0.5). Changes have only been made to the RRS key input parameters in order to simulate the changing loads during the face excavation process in tunneling. The critical part of this numerical modelling work that is under investigation in this study under each stress regime, is the period just after the excavation: i.e 4 hours; 16 hours after excavation; and finally after the complete curing (28 days) of the cement based components. The RRS are installed in three consecutive numerical steps as follows: a) the application of S(fr) on the rock surface in order to even it up for the RRS application; b) radial bolting; and c) installation of the reinforcing steel rebars, that form the reinforced beam. The results are varying and are strongly dependent on the imposed stress regime and they show in general the following tendencies: The axial forces on S(fr) show that S(fr) is almost overloaded during the first 4 hours in all 3 stages. More particularly: For the case with sH/sv =2 a) the axial forces on S(fr) and on the steel rebars are reduced after 16 hours and 28 days; b) the same is observed on the shear stresses in S(fr) and on steel rebars, they are decreasing after 16 hours and 28 days; and c) the bolts loads are almost unchanged. For the case with sH/sv =1 a) the axial forces on the S(fr) are reduced after 16 hours and 28 days; b) the same is observed for the axial and shear stresses, as well as moments on the steel rebars, they are decreasing after 16 hours and 28 days; and c) the bolts loads are almost unchanged."

It is no mystery why the mining industry has such lofty safety standards. In dealing with Mother Nature and gravity, the combination of the two can create significant hazards from high wall and tunnel collapses to huge landslides. The loss of production from a major disruption could be enormous. The price tag on the loss of human life is immeasurable. The evolution of geotechnical instruments and software has been ongoing for years. But the biggest innovations have occurred during the era of cell modems, internet, and wireless networks, allowing for real time data and alarms to be delivered globally anywhere and anytime to one?s computer, laptop and smartphone. Yet in some ways you can thank the urban construction projects for developing much of the technology in use by today?s mines. Due to the density of population and the billions in dollars of structures and infrastructure in cities throughout the US and the world, urban projects have faced intense scrutiny for years. Out of this scrutiny was born the necessity of real time automated monitoring of instrumentation and sensors, a defence against catastrophic failures, and real time early warning systems through alarms that can and do saves lives. It is also possible to identify areas of concern with subsequent remediation prior to failure.

Wet magnetic separation methods for recovering hematite and chromite fines and ultrafines are investigated in this paper. These methods include wet high intensity and high gradient magnetic separations, carrier or "piggy-back" magnetic method, magnetic field-induced aggregation and magnetic seeding. This investigation indicates that wet magnetic separation is more efficient for fines and ultrafines whereas other methods can be used to enhance the particle aggregation and/or the magnetic response. The magnetic behaviour of these minerals with respect to magnetizing field, particle size and temperature is also presented.

The Cripple Creek Mining district is located in Teller County, Colorado, 30 km west of Colorado Springs and 9 km southwest of Pikes Peak (Fig. 1). Since its discovery in 1891, the district has produced almost 21 million tr oz of gold (Gott et al., 1967), most of which has been from high-grade vein deposits. Globe Hill is located in the northern part of the district (Fig. 2). Production from its summit has yielded over 100,000 tr oz of gold. Early production was concentrated along high-grade veins and fault structures, but emphasis was soon placed on the extensive, low-grade (0.0X oz/t), breccia-hosted mineralization. From 1977 to 1981 Newport Minerals, Inc., a subsidiary of Gold Resources, Inc., mined 680,000 t of low-grade gold ore from the Globe Hill pit (Fig. 3) and production is expected to resume in 1986. These strongly-altered and -oxidized breccias are amenable to bulk-mining methods, and thus similar deposits are currently being sought elsewhere in the district. Numerous publications and reports discuss the breccia-hosted mineralization at Globe Hill. They include Cross and Penrose (1895); Argall (1905, 1908); Lindgren and Ransome (1906); Keener (1962); Peters (1982); Thompson, Trippel, and Dwelley (1985); and Trippel (1985). This preprint is a summary of the recently-completed research documented by Trippel (1985).

As the total cost of labor has significantly increased over the past ten years, older underground mines have found it more difficult to compete- in a limited demand coal market. Many of the older mines were developed extensively into a reserve requiring a large number of workers to maintain and rehabilitate extensive track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, a large number of fans were required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. This paper focuses upon problems which beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability.

"THE MINES OF THE FUTURE The mines of the future present a host of challenges, which may appear exciting or daunting depending on one’s perspective. Whether some sectors of the public recognize it or not, the demand for raw resources is not going away any time soon. In fact, it is rising as global population grows, urbanizes and attempts to steadily increase quality of life. Yes, at the same time that much of the highly developed world is calling for greener goods, reduced consumption, and cleaner production, in other areas there are cries for clean water and sanitation, consistent energy supply, access to health care and education, personal security, and support for basic human rights. The balancing act for sustainable development of our global society is indeed precarious, and the mining community is necessarily a key player. Fortunately, many industry members have accepted this role and the responsibility to provide leadership and a solid foundation for progress. Looking ahead, we need new generations of leaders, many of whom will be mine engineers, which are ready to tackle all sorts of complex problems. There are tremendous needs just for technological innovations. Increasingly tough deposits will require that we continue to expand scale toward “super” pits and “deep” underground mining fully develop unconventional recovery techniques like in-situ leaching and gasification or deep-sea extraction, and seriously consider off-earth endeavors. Such work will take entirely autonomous equipment; novel separations, processing and recycling methods; and systems that can withstand extreme physical conditions – just to name a few. It will also take a level of systems integration never-before seen in our field, complete with big data issues, sophisticated analytics and modeling efforts, and cyber-security challenges. Moreover, increasingly complex environmental problems will require creative solutions. Addressing issues like pollution control across multiple media, emerging contaminants, optimal management of wastes, selective mining, and shared use of resources between mine operations and surrounding communities and ecosystems are among top priorities. Really, a complete paradigm shift must occur, such that our focus is on overall improvement of environmental conditions, rather than minimization of impacts. A similar shift will be required in the social realm. How can we make miners safer and healthier on-site and off? How can we contribute to communities such that they are better off, now and long-term, for having a mine next door? How can we help transform artisanal mining practices to also contribute to sustainable development? How can our work be a factor in increasing economic and political stability? How can we improve the public understanding of raw resources and the need for mining enterprises?"

Soda ash is the common name for sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), an alkali compound that is the 11th largest inorganic chemical in terms of production of all domestic inorganic and organic chemicals, excluding petrochemical feedstocks. Despite that most people have never heard of soda ash, it is an important industrial compound used to manufacture glass, chemicals, soaps and detergents, pulp and paper, and many other familiar consumer products. Natural alkalis have been used by mankind for thousands of years; however, their industrial manufacture dates back to only the latter half of the 18th century. Natural deposits of sodium carbonate have been known as early as about 3500 BC, when the Egyptians used natural soda ash in making glass. They also mixed lime and soda ash to make sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) that was combined with silicate minerals found in the Sinai desert. This made a soluble silica, which when added to aluminum-rich silt from the Nile River, produced a silica- aluminate cement mortar with excellent bonding properties for construction. The Romans in the first century AD also used natural soda ash in glass manufacture but expanded its use medically for the treatment of colic pains and skin eruptions, and in the making of bread. Elsewhere, people used the ashes of wood to obtain their source of alkali. People learned over time that different types of wood yielded various ashes with different properties; therefore, various plants were burned specifically for their ashes. Ash from plants grown in salt-bearing soils (such as saltwort) and from kelp and other seaweeds, especially Spanish barilla, were so different from ashes obtained from other vegetation that it became known as soda ash (due to its sodium content) versus pot ash, a potassium-based alkali ash. About 13 t of barilla ashes produced 1 t of sodium carbonate and 14 kg of iodine as a byproduct. The difference between these two ashes was relatively obscure until Duhamel Dumonceau made the distinction clear in 1736. The word soda ash developed from common usage and is perhaps more well known today than its synonym sodium carbonate. One of the primary ores of soda ash is trona, a sodium carbonate-bearing mineral that's name is traced back to Arabic origin. Trona also is known internationally by other names such as urao (Venezuela), kaum (Nigeria), natron (from Greek nitron and Latin natrium), and szekso (Hungary). The beginning of the Industrial Revolution in Western Europe in the late 18th century soon put a strain on the availability of raw materials to meet consumer demands. One of these scarce materials was soda ash. Because of the Seven Years War with England and the Napoleonic wars with other parts of Europe, France could not obtain sufficient quantities of Spanish barilla or other supplies of vegetable alkali to meet the growing demand. Efforts were needed to synthesize soda ash. In 1775, the French Academy of Sciences offered a large prize of 2,400 livres to someone who could find an inexpensive method to make soda ash. In September 1791 at St. Denis, Nicolas Leblanc (1742- 1806), a French chemist, developed such a technique using salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. The French Revolution interfered with its development, and his patent and factory were confiscated with Leblanc receiving only token compensation. Napoleon returned his factory to him; however, Leblanc was not able to raise enough capital to reopen it, and he committed suicide in 1806. A small, but not particularly successful, Leblanc plant was established in England in 1814. It was not until 1823 when the process first became commercially successful in Liverpool, England. The process was introduced in Germany in 1843 and in Austria in 1851 (Harness and Coons, 1942). Soda ash production by the Leblanc process reached its peak of about 599 500 t in 1880, after which it began to decline as the Solvay process became more popular. The Leblanc process was used to a limited extent in Europe during World War I but had disappeared by World War II. The Solvay process, also known as the ammonia-soda process, was developed by Alfred and Ernest (1 838-1922) Solvay in 1861 based on a concept by Fresnel that had been known since 1811. For the next 50 years, the implementation of the idea evaded industrial chemists because no large-scale and economic means could be found to commercialize the concept. Although Ernest Solvay was unaware of the existance of an ammonia-soda concept, he solved the problems by utilizing carbonating towers. The Solvay process produced soda ash from salt, limestone, and coke, with ammonia as a catalyst. With a capital of 136,000 francs, the first plant was built by the Solvay brothers at Couillet, Belgium, in 1863 with production commencing in 1865. Synthetic soda ash production amounted to 1.5 tpd in 1866, but reached 10 tpd by 1872. They patented their use of carbonating towers in 1872 that had made ammonia-soda manufacturing a successful continuous process. Their second plant was built in 1872 at Dombasle, France. In 1874, the first Solvay plant in England was built at Northwich by Ludwig Mond, the namesake of Brunner Mond and Co. (formerly Imperial Chemical Industries), the company that currently operates the two English Solvay plants. In the United States, William B. Cogswell in February 1879 heard a presentation on the Solvay process and sailed to Europe to meet with the Solvay brothers to seek their support for using their process in New York. At first, the brothers were not interested; however, Mr. Cogswell was persistent and ultimately gained their support. The Solvay Rocess Co. was formed Sep. 2 1, 1881, and construction began immediately on the first Solvay plant at Geddes, near Syracuse, NY. The plant came onstream Jan. 10, 1884, and produced 11 180 t in its first year of operation. In 1910, rotary calciners were installed that increased capacity to 1 000 tpd. By 1930, plant capacity was up to 2 400 tpd. The facility remained in continuous operation for more than 100 years. By 1939. 10 Solvay soda ash plants were in operation in 6 States throughout the nation. The Syracuse plant was officially closed Jan. 6, 1986, with total shutdown completed by Feb. 1986. Ironically, this facility was the first Solvay plant as well as the last. "In recent years, significant strides have been made to optimize the design of filtration and pressurization systems used on enclosed cabs of mobile mining equipment to reduce respirable dust and other contaminants and provide the best air quality to the equipment operators. This synergetic effort has involved original equipment manufacturers building mining equipment, manufacturers of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for mobile equipment, filtration and pressurization system manufacturing companies, as well as the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and other government organizations. Considering all the advances made in this area over the last decade, one aspect that NIOSH still needs to assess is the longevity of optimal cab performance with respect to the quality (filtering efficiency) of the filters used in filtration and pressurization systems. In today’s culture, most health and safety professionals automatically believe that HEPA quality filters need to be used to provide the greatest level of protection to workers. Researchers at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research for NIOSH hypothesized that HEPA quality filters may not be optimal for the mining industry and speculated that MERV 16 rated filters would be more appropriate in most cases. In order to test this hypothesis, NIOSH performed a two-year study comparing both HEPA and MERV 16 quality filters on two pieces of underground limestone mining equipment, being a roof-bolter and face drill machine. Testing showed at the 95 pct. confidence level that there was no statistical difference between the two efficiency filters on both pieces of mining equipment. Since the MERV 16 rated filters were less restrictive and provided greater cab pressure, and since they did not have to be replaced as often as the HEPA quality filters, researchers concluded the MERV 16 filters were the optimal choice for both pieces of mining equipment in this case study comparative analysis. INTRODUCTION When most health and safety professionals today think about filtration efficiencies and their correlation with protecting workers’ health, the normal assumption is the higher the efficiency of a filter, the greater the protection afforded to the workers. The next logical step is to believe that HEPA filters deliver the greatest protection for workers because they provide the highest filtering efficiency. Obviously high-efficiency intake filters are a necessity for an effective cab filtration and pressurization system on mobile mining equipment, but what is the optimal filter efficiency rating for achieving high levels of cab protection factor performance over the service life of filters? To address this question, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has performed an in-depth laboratory research study over the years simultaneously with numerous field studies to retrofit used enclosed cabs on mobile mining equipment with newer and more effective filtration and pressurization systems."

There are two approaches to developing a minicomputer based application for an industrial grinding circuit. Usually, the control program is coded and compilation-debugged on a large-scale scientific computing system or the minicomputer itself if the machine is available. Final debugging and testing must wait for installation and checkout of the entire minicomputer system. Two immediate disadvantages of this approach are the need to obtain, install and check out the hardware before the final debugging stages of program development can begin, and interference with normal mill operation during such final testing. This work reports on an alternative to the usual procedure. Here both compilation and execution bugs are eliminated from the application program before hardware installation by testing the control program against a reasonable dynamic simulation of the entire process. Thus, software development can be completed before the target mini is installed. Such off-line development requires a reasonably accurate mathematical model for the entire process system as well as a suitable simulation package for communication between the simulated environment and the minicomputer application program. Specific data describing the design configurations and dimensions of the mills, cyclones, sumps, pump characteristics and analog controller configuration were supplied by ANAMAX for a grinding division consisting of a rod mill followed by two ball mills in parallel. This information was used to set up a plausible model structure. Steady state ANAMAX data on particle size analysis at various points in the circuit and corresponding values of flow rates, pump speeds, sump heights and slurry densities were used for model parameterization. The preferred operating control strategy - "best grind at operator-set rod mill feed rate" - was set by ANAMAX. An inferential particle size analysis technique using the cyclone cluster as an on-line particle size sensor was used in a novel control strategy_ to achieve the stated objective. Two disturbances common in the ANAMAX circuits - rod mill scoop pluggage and shut down/start up of one of the ball mills - were studied in detail. This report out- lines the steps in system development and testing and the results obtained.

Over the last few years, new methods to characterize the flow properties of bulk solids have been developed. Abrasive wear and particle attrition can now be accurately measured in a laboratory and scaled up to field conditions. In addition, the effect of large particles on a material's flow properties (cohesive strength, bulk density, wall friction) can be determined as well as the effects of various additives such as Freeze Conditioning Agents. New developments have also taken place in terms of devices to improve the reliability of solids flow. Much attention has been paid to finding ways to provide a mass flow pattern with relatively shallow hopper walls through the use of inserts. Such devices can also provide reliable in-bin gravity blending of bulk solids and/or completely non-segregated discharge. Other developments have occurred in the area of belt-to-belt transfer chutes and sealing screws. Many of these developments have direct application in the mining and minerals processing industries. Examples of each will be highlighted.

The third edition of the Underground Construction Association of SME?s (UCA) Cut-ting Edge series of conferences focused on a challenge every underground construction and tunneling project faces: controlling ground water. The conference, held in New York City in November, is a partnership between the UCA and The North American Tunneling Journal. It featured more than 20 technical presentations by professionals from around the world. Each described specific challenges unique to their projects and the solutions employed. More than 175 professionals attended the two-day conference that included an exhibition featuring 17 companies. In addition to the technical program, the Cutting Edge conference featured a site visit to the $10.4 billion East Side Access Project. Sponsors of the meeting included Soil Freeze, Traylor Bros., Kiewit, Skanska, Moretrench, Aecom and The Robbins Co.

Coal-water slurry preparation requires fine grinding and cleaning of coal by flotation. Finer grinding leads to increased ball wear and its effect on the surface properties of coal becomes of concern. Marked ball wear tests were performed to study the effects of oxygen, pH, the soluble species of coal and the addition of pyrrhotite on ball wear. The synergistic action of coal and oxygen greatly enhanced the corrosion of mild steel balls during grinding. Electrochemical measurements on a mild steel electrode in coal slurries and SEM observations of grinding ball surfaces were carried out to explore the corrosive wear mechanism.

The wear behaviors of grinding media with different chemical compositions and microstructures in wet grinding of a quartz-pyrrhotite mixture was investigated under various environments. The marked ball wear tests showed that the wear rate could be minimized by a suitable combination of martensite and ferrite within the same ball. A ball composed solely of hard martensite exhibited increased wear under an oxygen environment, while balls composed of both soft ferrite together with hard martensite exhibited decreased wear due presumably to the difference in their passivation? behaviors. The galvanic interactions between the two phases as well as among these phases and an electroactive mineral were investigated through electrochemical measurements under abrasive conditions in a slurry. The rates of formation of passive films controlled the corrosion currents of the high chromium steel media. Corrosive wear and its effect on flotation are discussed using the passivation kinetics model thereby developed.

Accidents involving powered haulage and mobile equipment like haul trucks are a major safety concern in the U.S. mining industry. They account for more than 50 percent of surface mine fatalities each year [1]. A recent National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) analysis of 91 fatal incidents identified loss of vehicle control and situational awareness as key contributors [2]. However, the first-hand perspectives of operators are often missing, emphasizing the need for deeper insights into operators’ decisionmaking, lessons learned, sensory cues and mental strategies used during near-miss events. The findings in this analysis will help inform the development of training and safety solutions to prevent or reduce haul truck accidents.

High-G centrifuges from five preparation plants were sampled to determine and quantify the various operating factors affecting performance. The operating factors that were considered include feed rate and percent solids, size of feed material, screen-basket type, hardness of coal and age of the flights. The performance parameters that were measured include product surface moisture, recovery and degradation of the coal. Regression equations with good significance levels were developed.

Construction materials indeed face a dilemma...as does the building industry as a whole. A stop & go economy; a severe drop; in housing starts; lingering indecision over just what corrective steps are to be taken or to their degree of commitment; no less basic disagreement in regard to which of the, Nation's problems is really the most pressing -- inflation or recession? Optimism has become a rare quality these days. At moat the cautious view is that this new year will see a long, hard struggle back, with hopes that 1976 at least can truly mark a dual anniversary celebration for the United States and its economic health. Yet the paradox is that once recovery does return, those very construction minerals and materials --which in recent years have experienced the ups and downs of overcapacity, shortage, and now declining demand again-- will once more face the spectre of mass inability to service revived and growing needs for its product. Mounting costs, present marginal expansion investment, and substantial lead times required for new facilities to come into production, could well form a bottleneck to economic upswing. The result again can be another cycle of shortage-induced inflation, and with it continued gyrations within the demand supply relationships of the country's building industries.
