A salt dome appears to provide the basic medium requirements for the excavation of the 315 foot diameter, unsupported spherical cavity at a depth of 2700 feet required by the AEC in a proposed "decoupling" experiment. Tatum Salt Dome was a natural choice for a site because more geological and hydrological information has been accumulated on Tatum than any other salt dome on the Gulf Coast. The Tatum Dome is a mile in diameter, roughly flat topped, nearly cylindrical in shape and has some overhang at the top. The salt stock has nearly vertical layering of alternating bands of salt and anhydrite. In the vicinity of the dome, adequate fresh water for solution mining is available in surface streams and in subsurface aquifers. A saline aquifer is available for brine disposal. A tentative cavity location was selected near the center of the dome which meets the design criteria established by the AEC.

Refractory gold concentrates often contain submicroscopic gold that is encapsulated within the crystal matrix of iron sulfide minerals, such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. To recover the gold, the host mineral must generally be broken down chemically by oxidative processes, such as roasting, pressure oxidation or bacterial leaching, which expose the gold for subsequent recovery by leaching in cyanide solution. The focus of attention in these pretreatment processes is usually the oxidation of the sulfides to elemental sulfur, sulfur dioxide gas or sulfate ions. Less attention is paid to the deportment of iron and the changes in its oxidation state, although this can have a profound effect on gold and silver liberation, as well as downstream operating costs. Iron sulfide minerals break down completely during pressure oxidation, and dissolve in the sulfuric acid solution that is gener-ated from oxidation of the sulfides. This dissolution liberates the tiny gold particles that were originally trapped in the sulfide crystals, and gold recovery during subsequent cyanidation is usually very high (>95%). Iron goes into solution in the oxidation process, initially as ferrous sulfate, but this compound is rapidly oxidized to ferric sulfate, which then hydrolyzes and reprecipitates. The form of the precipitate varies depending on the operating conditions in the autoclave and the presence of certain metal cations. When the acidity in the autoclave is quite low (<20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is high (>200°C), the formation of hematite is favored. When the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is relatively low (160 to 200°C), the formation of basic iron sulfate is favored. If the ore or the leach solution contains significant levels of certain cations (such as Na+, K+, NH4+, Ag+ or Pb2+) and the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4), jarosite compounds are favored. Hematite is the desired iron product in the autoclave discharge, for both metallurgical and environmental reasons, but it is difficult to operate an autoclave under the conditions required for effective liberation of gold without converting some of the iron to basic iron sulfate and/or jarosite. These compounds fall into a category of iron compounds known generically as iron hydroxy sulfates, all of which can cause significant processing and environmental problems in the downstream gold process. This paper deals specifically with basic iron sulfate: the conditions under which it is formed in an autoclave, the problems that are caused by its presence in the feed to a cyanidation plant and possible remedial strategies that can be adopted, both in the autoclave and downstream.

Many large. low-grade (refractory) sulfide gold resources exist in Nevada and other parts of the world that are not amenable to concentration by conventional flotation practice, Over the past several years Santa Fe Pacific Gold (SFPG) has investigated flotation process options to economically treat low-grade refractory resources of this type at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks. Conventional flotation technology applied to the original high-grade gold resources at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks was initially unsuccessful. Review and analysis of auriferous (gold-bearing) iron sulfide mineralogical characteristics and flotation chemistry provided a fundamental understanding that led to the development of a new flotation process that SFPG refers to as N2TEC. This paper discusses the development of this technology and compares N2 TEC results with conventional flotation practice.

I have been asked to discuss the "Development of the Twin Buttes Mine for Production." This property, which is a large low-grade open pit copper mine about 25 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, was recently brought into production by The Anaconda Company under a long-term lease agreement with the Banner Mining Company. Since the scope of this paper is limited to the subject broadly indicated by its title I will confine discussion of historical, environmental and other general matters to a brief summary sufficient, I hope, to establish a background of those conditions which influenced our approach to the technical and economic problems that faced us at Twin Buttes. The paper deals primarily with our studies and activities related to the solution of these problems and with the resulting engineering and business decisions that were taken - decisions which culminated last September in the initial commercial operation of another major open pit copper producer unique and interesting in several respects.

Introduction Though temporarily shutdown due to the depressed economy, the Henderson mine is a large underground molybdenite producer, using a continuous panel-caving mining system. The location of the ore body requires access from the surface through three shafts, the collars of which are located about 3.15 km (10,350 ft) above sea level. At this altitude, normal temperatures are such that heat must be added to intake-ventilation air for about half of each year. This prevents ice from building up in the intake shafts, waterlines from freezing underground, employee discomfort, and equipment-related problems such as pneumatic rock drill icing and cold starting of diesel engines. Because of topographic and environmental constraints, the Henderson mill and concentrator are located 24 km (15 miles) from the mine, on the west side of the Continental Divide. All ore from the mine is transported to the mill by an electrified rail haulage system, with 15.4 km (9.6 miles) of the trip being underground through a double-track tunnel. A shaft at the midpoint of the tunnel exhausts air drawn from the mine and from the portal that is at an elevation of 2.7 km (8,950 ft). Intake air at the portal must be heated for part of the year to prevent ice buildup. Mine Ventilation System The mine ventilation system uses three sources of fresh air and two exhausts. The primary freshair intake is No. 3 shaft. It is concrete lined to a diameter of 7 m (23 ft) for a total depth of 698 m (2,291 ft). An airflow of 755 m3/s (1.6 mil¬lion cfm) is supplied to this shaft by two vane-axial 932-kW (1,250-hp) fans on the surface. The air is distributed within the mine by means of fresh-air distribution levels connected to production and development levels by raises. A secondary source of fresh air to the mine is provided by No. 2 shaft, the primary man and material access. This shaft is concrete lined to a diameter of 8.5 m (28 ft) for a total depth of 946 m (3,105 ft). Downcast airflow is induced by a pressure differential produced by the fans in the system such that net intake and exhaust volumes are equal. The No. 2 shaft flow of 165 m3/s (350,000 cfm) enters the mine network from the production and haulage levels. Exhaust air is moved from the various working levels through connecting raises to exhaust col¬lection levels that return it to No. 1 shaft. No. 1 shaft is the primary mine exhaust. It is concrete lined to a diameter of 7 m (23 ft) for a total depth of 788 m (2,584 ft). Three vane-axial 932-kW (1,250-hp) exhaust fans are located at the collar of No. 1 shaft, producing a flow of 850 m3/s (1.8 million cfm). In addition, an airflow of 71 m3/s (150,000 cfm) from the intake distribution level is exhausted via the haulage tunnel, by means of No. 4 shaft located midway in the tunnel. The main features of the mine ventilation network are summarized in Fig. 1. "The Bankei-Kitanosawa tunnel that is located in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan includes a 450m long section near the arrival point where mudstone which can liquate out natural hazardous materials such as arsenic and selenium exceeding the tolerance stipulated by country as well as weathered mudstone and unconsolidated sedimentary rocks with small overburden and the competence factor less than 1.0 are present. The mucks containing hazardous materials were disposed into the waterproof branch tunnels created from the inside of the main tunnel. The full face early ring closure method was employed to ensure the stability of the tunnel in the low strength rock masses having no stand-up time. As a result, the waterproof tunnels branching off the main tunnel can manage water tightness so as to ensure safety and relief against environmental risks of the hazardous materials. It is also demonstrated that the full face early ring closure method enable construction of the tunnel with a small overburden in the low strength rock masses. INTRODUCTION The Bankei-Kitanosawa tunnel includes a 450m long section near the arrival point where mudstone which can liquate out natural hazardous materials such as arsenic and selenium exceeding the tolerance stipulated by country as well as weathered mudstone and unconsolidated sedimentary rocks with small overburden and the competence factor less than 1.0 are present. In order to overcome the restrictions, the hazardous materials were designed to be disposed into large cross section waterproof tunnels which were newly designed and constructed in high strength and hazardous material free Andesite. The lining for the tunnels was composed of with shotcrete. In addition, full face early ring closure (Sato et al., 2013) was employed to stabilize the tunnel so as to enable safe tunnel excavation in low strength rock masses where a ground arch is deemed unachievable. This paper presents the safe disposal method of mucks which are likely to liquate out natural hazardous materials as well as the full face early ring closure method and its mechanical characteristics."

Testing methods are described to help in decisions of selecting the most viable comminution circuits. The authors present a comparison evaluation based on numerous studies to help make initial choices for feasibility evaluations. An update summary of completed Bond grindability and Abrasion Index testwork at Allis-Chalmers Process Research Test Center for all materials is included. "What is the best circuit to comminute primary crusher product to make beneficiation feed?" This frequently asked question has the implication that there is one circuit which is universally the right circuit. The answer has been sought ever since it has been necessary to break rock to liberate entrapped mineral values. With every new contribution to the art and the science of comminution, the scope of the discussions broaden. It is not even possible to define what the abstract term best means.

When originally accepting the assignment, the Client had described the property as vacant land. A prior appraisal was later discovered and revealed that the property included a mineral rights appraisal. Further research disclosed an old dispute with a court ruling based on testimony by AIMA-certified experts. The present appraisal was therefore based on data from findings of the court with a fresh look at discount rate, absorption period, and residual land value. Fortuitously, the property subsequently sold on the market, while meeting all criteria for Fair Market Value. This provided insight into a market-based discount rate. Also, the absorption period could be adjusted in accordance with the current market conditions. The residual land value was minimal (based on comparable sales and projecting trends in market) as the property was affected by a flood zone and the surrounding development was sparse. PROPERTY HISTORY: A GREAT INVESTMENT Briefly, the subject property is located in the floodplain region of the San Jacinto River, a short river in southeastern Texas that flows into Galveston Bay, filled with sand and gravel. This location is on the north side of Houston, north of Beltway 8 on the east side of I-59.

Mineral resource classification relies on the expert assessment of a qualified person (QP) to determine which blocks of a 3D mineral resource model are classified as measured, indicated, or inferred. The decision is often based on a combination of quantitative parameters related to the estimation process and qualitative decisions based on previous experience or preconceptions not captured in the numerical model. As such, the procedure is subject to inconsistency, that is, blocks with similar qualities may end up in different categories, mainly due to the subjective nature of the approach. In this paper, we present a methodology to assist the qualified person in this task by clustering blocks with similar parameters and then classifying them into categories in a consistent and automatic manner that only requires the specification of a few hyper-parameters. The result is a consistent classification into resource categories comparable to the result of a classification done by a qualified person but fully consistent and generated in a short time frame. The procedure begins with repeatedly sub-sampling the block model to determine a distance matrix using an unsupervised random forest approach and then clustering the blocks using the associated distance matrix. Then, all the blocks in the model are classified using a supervised random forest approach, which gives a probability of belonging to each class. The initial class can be determined from the class probabilities. Support vector classification with a radial basis function kernel is utilized to smooth the boundaries between classes and define the final classification. An approach to tune the hyper-parameters of smoothing is provided. The methodology is demonstrated with two examples from two gold deposits. Results are comparable to the classification done by the project qualified person using conventional methods.

During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion and, in several cases, breaches between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced breaches indicates that impacts to the river system are complex and vary significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as both positive and negative. Several floodplain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow have reverted to active riverbed. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers see the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries -Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is performing additional studies of the impacts to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound floodplain decisions regarding mining.

This paper reports on mineral facies, ore textures, distribution of iron in sphalerites, and fractionation of sulfur isotopes in the Anvil ore body, Yukon Territory, Canada. Because the detailed structure and stratigraphy, both regional and local, are being studied by the geological staff at the mine and members of the Geological Survey of Canada, these topics will be discussed only briefly. The results of our study of the Anvil ore body have implications on theories of the genesis of ore deposits of this type, and these will be discussed. The Anvil ore body is the largest and most significant of three lead-zinc discoveries in an area of the central Yukon where major lead-zinc deposits were unknown only twenty years ago. The Vangorda deposit consisting of 22 million tons was discovered in 1953, followed in 1954 by the Swim Lakes deposit consisting of 10 million tons. The Anvil deposit, which consists of three ore zones, was discovered in 1964. The total reserve at Anvil mine is 63.5 million tons, with an average grade of 3.4% lead, 5.7% zinc, 0.16% copper and 1.2 ounces of silver per ton. This study is concerned primarily with the number one ore body which is about 2,400 feet long, up to 1,100 feet wide and 300 feet thick.

Coal waste materials inhibit direct vegetation establishment due to adverse physical and chemical properties, particularly low water retention and high potential acidity. The Moss # I coal refuse pile is located in Dickenson County, Virginia, and was idled in the late 1980&apos;s with little topsoil resource available for final closure. The refuse was acidic (Total-S = .. 38%; pH = 3.6), black, high (70%) in coarse fragments, and had a low water holding capacity (4.5% in < 2.0 mm fraction). A small plot experiment was established on the refuse pile to evaluate the influence of liming rates (50% and 100% of lime req.) and topsoil thickness (15, 30 and 60 cm) on vegetative growth and leachate quality. Liming and topsoil amendment increased the surface soil pH from < 4.0 to > 6.0 over a two-year period, which resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than the control plots. All topsoil treatments resulted in greater vegetative cover and biomass than plots treated with lime only due to improved surface soil physical and chemical properties. A topsoil treatment of 60 cm gave the thickest vegetative cover and biomass yield. Such a treatment, however, would be cost-prohibitive at this location. Application of 27 Mg ha-1 of lime to the refuse surface along with 15 cm of topsoil produced acceptable two-year vegetative cover and biomass, and appeared to be the optimal treatment for this particular situation. Both liming and topsoil had no affect on leachate pH and the electrical conductivity in leachates collected below the plots. This suggests that surface revegetation will have little effect on the quality of water draining through the pile, so long term water treatment requirements may not be reduced by successfully revegetating the pile surface.

Effective October 1, 1958, President Eisenhower imposed, by Presidential Order, fixed import quotas on lead metal and lead concentrates and also on zinc metal and zinc concentrates. He did this in response to an escape clause case under the Trade Agreements Act filed by many of the large and small lead and zinc mining companies in September 1957. It is the purpose of this paper to give the experience of the lead-zinc industry under this order during its first two years and some observations on what might have come about under different conditions of U.S.A. consumption. Before considering these various experiences and observations, it seems wise to first outline briefly the basic problem which prompted such an order. Under the Tariff Act of 1930, the duty on pig lead was fixed at 2-l/8¢ per pound and slab zinc at 1-3/4e; per pound. The ores, concentrates and closely related products of these metals carried closely related duty rates. The Trade Agreements Act of 1934 and succeeding similar acts had given the, President the power to lower these and other duties. As a result-of various negotiations with foreign nations, by 1951 these duties had been lowered to their present day rates of 1-1/16 per pound on&apos; pig lead and 7/10o, per pound on slab zinc. Related ores, concentrates and semi-fabricated forms of the metals received commensurate treatment. Under these acts, the Tariff Commission has the right to recommend to the President duty increases, specific quotas or both if find that imports have injured the affected industry. He has the right to accept or reject such recommendations, in whole or in part, in the light of the national interest,

Clay slurries are normally dewatered using flocculents like sulfuric acid or aluminum sulfate. This type of flocculation is based on the electrolytic mechanism. For certain clay dewatering applications, this method of flocculation is unsatisfactory. Flocculation, based on the bridging mechanism, using organic polymers has been utilized to overcome such problem situations. This method of flocculation offers solutions not possible by previous methods. Normally these flocculents are used to assist dewatering. In this case, not only is dewatering promoted, but also further processing is assisted by a change in the dilatant character of the filter cake that is formed. Discharge of filter cake is easier, extrusion of filter cake on to conveyor dryer is possible or improved, and heat transfer and drying rates of the extruded filter cake are substantially higher. Both natural and synthetic organic polymers have been utilized for this purpose. Selection, application techniques, and economics are described.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has received several reports of filters igniting when high-temperature disposable filters were used on non-cooled diesel exhaust systems in underground coal mines. Based on laboratory testing (to determine the ignition temperature of these filters, which were loaded in the field with diesel particulate matter, or DPM), MSHA determined a maximum safe operating temperature for high-temperature disposable filters. When the results of the laboratory filter ignition testing were reported to the Coal Diesel Partnership (comprised of members of the Coal Industry, Labor, NIOSH and MSHA) the Partnership charged NIOSH with investigating the safe use of high-temperature disposable filters. This paper reports on the design, fabrication and testing of a unique exhaust gas cooling device and the ability of this device to successfully lower filter inlet temperatures and thus reduce the potential for fires.

"In underground continuous mining operations, ventilation, water sprays, and machine-mounted flooded bed scrubbers are the primary means of controlling respirable dust exposures at the working face. Changes in mining arrangements, such as, face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation, and equipment operator positioning, can impact the ability of dust controls to reduce occupational respirable dust exposures. This study reports and analyzes dust concentrations measured by the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research for both remote-controlled continuous mining machine operators and haulage operators at ten U.S. underground mines. Results of these respirable dust surveys show that continuous miner exposures varied little based on depth of cut, but are significantly affected by ventilation configuration. Haulage operators experienced elevated concentrations in blowing face ventilation. The type of cut influenced exposures, with elevated exposures observed for both continuous miner operators and haulage operators when working in crosscuts driven into, or counter to, the section airflow. Individual cuts are highlighted to demonstrate instances of minimal and excessive dust exposure attributable to particular mining configurations. These findings form the basis of recommendations for lowering face worker respirable dust exposures when performing a variety of continuous mining cuts.INTRODUCTION Underground continuous coal mining operations may encounter a wide range of conditions and arrangements during production and development activities. These activities typically produce respirable coal mine dust, putting operators of continuous mining machines and coal haulers at risk for elevated exposures. In order to comply with federal regulations limiting respirable dust exposures for the duration of a working shift, mine operators typically implement ventilation, water sprays, and machine-mounted flooded-bed dust collectors (scrubbers) to dilute and control mine dusts during coal cutting. Nevertheless, changes in operational conditions can limit the ability of these controls to effectively reduce dust exposures. Some examples of conditions that can change during the course of mining include face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation, and operator positioning. Because these arrangements are largely under the control of mine operators, any insight into associated exposures may inform future plans and behaviors, reducing occupational exposures to respirable dust. The objective of this OMSHR study is to evaluate respirable dust exposures associated with a range of continuous mining arrangements by comparing occupational dust concentrations measured during a series of field surveys. These comparisons consider face ventilation configurations, depths of cut, and crosscut mining practices."

Underground sites have great potential for industrial plants, for warehouses, and for other purposes where above-surface locations are now employed. Subsurface locations have generally been over- looked by industrial planners even though they may offer many features of superiority over the conventional sites. There are many opportunities for industries or warehouses to go underground. New space can be excavated expressly for this purpose or openings in existing mines may be converted to useful space. Another possibility is the pre-planned mine-industrial site, in which a mineral product is mined and marketed as a commercial venture while utilizing a mining plan which will permit rapid conversion of the openings created into active industrial areas while mining continues in the adjacent ground. An underground plant located in chambers created by excavating space in solid rock has many advantages, including low construction costs, low heating-cooling costs, freedom from storm damage or other surface weather conditions, absence of traffic noise and vibration, fireproof construction, low insurance costs, excellent working conditions, easily controlled temperature and humidity, almost unlimited bearing capacity of floors, low maintenance costs, no effect upon surface.

The Mission mine, located in southern Arizona near Tucson, is a recently developed open pit which produces 15,000 tons per day of copper ore. The mine lies on a wide and gently sloping bajada sweeping northeasterly from the Sierrita mountains. It derives its name from the nearby Mission San Xavier del Bac, built circa 1700. The ore body is everywhere covered by about 200 feet of alluvium, as are the adjacent Pima and Palo Verde mines. The geology of the Mission deposit is known principally through the study of diamond drill holes spaced 150 to 300 feet apart. The open pit is in an infant stage and has not yet revealed much of the deposit, although information obtained there by the operating staff, and from a few thousand feet of exploratory underground workings, has added significantly to the general fund of knowledge. Permission to publish was granted by the American Smelting and Refining Company. I am indebted to Kenyon Richard and J. H. Courtright for criticism of this paper and for their direction during the several years in which I studied the Mission deposit. Acknowledgment is given to consultant in petrography, Robert L. [First of all I want to thank the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME for the opportunity to present what Industrias Penoles, S.A. is doing in Mexico to reach the basic objetive of the enterprise without compromising, in short or long term, the living conditions of the community or attempting in an irreversible form against Nature. Industrias Penoles, S.A. is one of the largest mining and metallurgical companies in Mexico. It was founded in 1887 and at the turn of the century installed a lead smelting operation close to the village of Torreon, which became city five years after the start up of the Penoles smelter. Now Torreon has a population close to 300,000 inhabitants. In 1974 Penoles is still the largest industry in Torreon and the dynamic growth of the city is close related to this factor. Today Penoles in Torreon has a lead smelter with a capacity of 130,000 metric tons/year of bullion, an electrolitic zinc plant of 105,000 metric ton/year, and it is modernizing its lead smelter to control pollution and expand it to 190,000 metric ton/year of bullion including all the services and refinery. The Penoles complex in Torreon is the biggest in the non-ferrous metals field in Latinoamérica.]

LKAB owns and operates two of the largest underground mines in the world in Northern Sweden. In Malmberget, with a production capacity of about 30,000 t/day of iron ore, the current main 815 m haulage level is rapidly approaching the end of Its life and plans are being made for its replacement on the 1000 m level. Due to the separation of the orebodies, trucks have been chosen for transporting the ore from the orepasses to the crushers. The trucks currently in use have a capacity of 120 tons. To increase the efficiency of the loaded haul, the new main level will have a favorable slope from the drawpoint locations to the crushers. From the new level the crushed ore will be transported by conveyor to the 815 m level for hoisting to the surface. The paper discusses the planned mining and transportation system.
