"The Mount Todd gold mine is located approximately 50 km (31 miles) north of the town of Katherine in the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia just off the Stewart Highway, and was operated in the 1990s until 2000 (Fig. 1). After cessation of mining operations, meteoric precipitation and acid rock drainage (ARD) associated with surface water runoff continued to report to the retention ponds across the mine site. In 2000, the mine site entered receivership and the NT government became responsible for the care and maintenance program. In 2006, Vista Gold Corp. (as Vista Gold Australia) acquired the rights to resume exploration on the mine site without the financial responsibility of the environmental liability. In January 2007, Vista Gold assumed the care and maintenance activities on behalf of the NT government, with the environmental liability remaining with the NT government, with the goal of reinitiating mining operations. A critical path component of the planned upgrades to the existing mine/milling facilities and infrastructure was the development of a cost effective treatment and dewatering program for the approximately 11 GL (2,900 million gal) of ARD stored in the Batman Pit (RP3), which has a maximum capacity of approximately 12 GL (3,200 million gal). The Batman Pit must be dewatered in order for Vista Gold to restart mining activities. The Batman Pit Lake had reached a maximum water depth of 104 m (341 ft) when Vista Gold initiated water level monitoring. It is important to note that the ARD water in the Batman Pit has been pumped into it from 2000 to 2012 under an NT government-approved environmental control program.The Batman Pit has virtually no connection to the local ground water regime due to the intensive silicification that accompanied the mineralizing event. In October 2012, just prior to treatment, the pit lake profile was characterized by uniform acidic pH (approximately pH 3.2) and oxic conditions (dissolved oxygen greater than 7 mg/L with depth (Fig. 2). The temperature decreased by approximately 4 °C (39 °F) between the lake surface and approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep, and remained near constant with increasing depth. This temperature difference is believed to be associated with an existing shallow mine bench at approximately 20 m (66 ft) deep around the perimeter of the pit. Similarly, electrical conductivity, an estimate of total dissolved solids, decreased by about 85 microSiemens per centimeter (µS/cm) from 2,800 to 2,715 µS/cm between 10 and 20 m (33 and 66 ft)."

"More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. School speakers in full mining gear were especially interesting to the young children.Other speakers were Michael Linn, Paradise Valley Unified School District — Business and School Partnerships; and Greg Kruse, Central Wyoming Section of SME — What makes a successful section?Engineering Competency ModelAmerican Association of Engineering Societies and the U.S. Department of Labor, with a grant from the United Engineering Foundation, developed a guide to the set of skills necessary for success in the engineering community -- Knowledge – Skills – Abilities — needed for all disciplines.Various engineering societies are now writing the Tier 5 occupation-specific requirements. Maximizing production of oil from sandstone petroleum reservoirs is aided by use of non-damaging drilling and workover/completion fluids. Various tests, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microsccpy, petrographic microscopy, porosity and permeability are conducted on core samples. Several fluids are selected, on the basis of these results, for return permeability tests. A report is then written giving the results of all tests, potential reservoir problems, and recommended practices for exploiting the reservoir.

Phosphate ores are the source of many commodities, such as phosphorus element, P2O5 and fertilizers. Discarding a large percentage of fine phosphate particles produced as slimes during phosphate ore processing represents a severe environmental problem, besides making the beneficiation process uneconomical. The phosphate industry is interested in a process that is efficient, with high grade and high recovery; ensures economical feasibility, with low operating cost; and is environmentally sound, with low toxicity. Numerous investigations have been conducted to try to find better processing techniques and reagents. However, reagent requirements and recovery limitations may be so high that the end does not justify the means. Reagents of biological origin are of special interest because they offer specific interactions with minerals, reduced operating costs, environmental acceptability and flexibility in adaptation. Recently, there has been a growing interest in using microorganisms as flocculants for mineral fines and as flotation collectors.

"It is almost a given that post-disaster mine conditions will have compromised the mine ventilation system, resulting in a hazardous atmosphere in portions of the mine, and often complicated travel through debris fields and roof falls. Robotic technologies provide the opportunity to gather valuable information to assist decision making or lessen exposure to dangerous conditions. MSHA's Mine Emergency Operations Division (MEO) has utilized a fully permissible mine robot, the V2, for a number of years, constantly updating the unit as new technologies became available. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, as part of the MINER Act Extramural Contract Program, examined the need for additional robotic units and ultimately funded three different types of prototype technologies: two robots, the Snake Robot and the Gemini-Scout, and a mine rescue robotic assist vehicle known as the ""Mule"". The Snake Robot is designed to be lowered through a borehole and to conduct surveillance (gas monitoring, video and audio) in the immediate vicinity, while the Gemini-Scout, designed to be deployed in the mine opening, serves as a more mobile and agile exploratory tool as compared to the MSHA V2 robot. The Mule was developed in response to needs expressed by mine rescue teams for a versatile remotely operated support vehicle and it will move from prototype to MEO utilization in the near future. This paper describes the development of the robot prototypes and discusses their limitations in the prototype stage, possible enhancements and potential applications, as well as the utilization of the Mule. INTRODUCTION The conditions in a coal mine may be dramatically altered after a mine fire or explosion. For example, the ventilation system may not be functioning correctly as control devices may be compromised or damaged beyond repair. The visibility in the mine opening may be limited due to accumulated smoke and dust. Roof support systems may be damaged or no longer functional. Equipment and materials may be strewn about the mine opening. Debris fields, blocked openings, roof falls, flooded areas, gas accumulations and active burning make it very difficult or impossible for those managing the post-event emergency to permit mine rescue teams to enter the mine to conduct search and rescue operations. With the evolution of robots and robotic assist technology there has been a proliferation of purpose-built units for the military, police and law enforcement agencies, urban search and rescue and those contending with hazardous environmental conditions. In each case, the technology used is designed to limit human exposure to the unsafe conditions or to provide access to areas under difficult conditions. For example, a specially-designed marine robot has been deployed into the damaged core of the Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant to assess the conditions of the containment vessels, where melted fuel is believed to have accumulated. Human access to the area is prohibited due to dangerously elevated levels of radioactivity [1]. Multiple robots were deployed in Amatrice, Italy, to assist in the response after the 6.2-magnitude earthquake devastated the town. The robots were used to explore two medieval churches that were severely damaged and deemed too dangerous for human entry [2]. Tactical robots are regularly used by police and law enforcement agencies when the conditions of the emergency place intervening officers directly in harm's way [3]."

Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modeled with conditional simulation, which generates multiple possible realizations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable). M ethods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time-consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modeling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimization, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially available software. An example for R esolute M ining Ltd.?s Syama gold project in M ali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.

"Understanding ground control problems continues to remain a focus of the mining engineering community. To aid mine operators and engineers in identifying and responding to ground control issues, the Ground Observation System (GOS) is being developed. The GOS is an integrated, web-based graphical user interface that displays ground response data collected wirelessly from an underground mine. It presents data in an intuitive manner to assist mine personnel, who are on- or off-site, in quickly identifying hazardous areas. Geotechnical instrumentation will be connected to wireless transmitters that will relay data in real-time to a surface computer that stores the information in a database. The GOS website will then display the geotechnical data in graphical and tabular forms, as well as in conditionally formatted mine maps. Data from each measurement device will be able to be viewed in its entirety or within a time interval, and can be downloaded for further analysis. The ability of the GOS to quickly interpret and communicate mine hazards to personnel of varying technical ability should prove to be a useful tool in understanding ground control and thus improving mine safety.INTRODUCTION Computer-based data information centers that convey operating parameters and conditions are prevalent in modern underground mines. Today’s systems are popular in showing ventilation controls and monitoring equipment performance (Jyothi & Meena 2013). In ground control monitoring, Conover, Ross, and Bigby, 2010 have installed a wired telltale roof monitoring system that sends roof displacement data every ten minutes to a computer on the surface. The computer receives, stores, and displays the data in real time. Data can also be viewed remotely through a password protected internet connection. Additionally, an internet connection allowed for remote updates to the system which streamlined software development and maintenance by eliminating travel (Conover et al., 2010). Currently, no such system beyond Conover et al.’s design has been accomplished. The Ground Observation System (GOS) is being developed to fill the void of real-time geotechnical monitoring in underground mines. A wide array of data will be transmitted wirelessly and broadcasted to on- and off-site mine personnel through the internet. The GOS will incorporate geotechnical data from roof deformation, borehole scratch testing, photogrammetry, and seismic monitoring into one interface, all while achieving permissibility for the use in gaseous mines. As a result, a comprehensive view of rock movement due to mining will be available. The overall purpose of the GOS is to deliver warnings; to ensure reliable data is relayed to personnel for the identification of potential ground failures, provide mine engineers information to design more stable mines, and assist with further geotechnical research."

Introduction With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive, but it leads to greater losses in slimes. Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25 to 50 µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Ore from the South Crofty mine near Redruth, Cornwall, was subjected to thermal pretreatment in the hope that differential thermal expansion of the minerals would lead to intergranular cracking, and thus enhanced liberation. South Crofty ore contains about 1% tin as cassiterite associated with a complex assemblage of quartz, chlorite, tourmaline, and hema¬tite in granite and slate. Recovery of cassiterite can be as low as 70%, as overgrinding occurs during stage reduction of the material to 1 mm (primary grinding) and 180 µm (regrinding). Cassiterite is present in grain sizes ranging from submicroscopic to + 10 mm, the bulk being predominantly in the range of 50 µm to 3 mm. Experimental Flat polished sections of the ore were photographed in reflected light using a Vickers M17 microscope. The sections were then heated in a Carbolite LMF4 muffle furnace. The heating rate and temperature were monitored by a thermocouple immersed in the bed of particles. Previous work by Sherring (1981) on the same material showed that a 55% reduction in grinding resistance occurred when the material was rapidly heated and cooled through the quartz inversion tem¬perature (573°C), where a volumetric expansion of 0.86% occurs. The samples were therefore heated to 650°C at 26°/min, and were then water-quenched to room temperature. The effect of heat treatment on the mineralogy and fracture network was assessed by examining the same area after treatment. Results Most of the sections examined showed that extensive transgranular cracking occurred as a result of heat treatment. Such cracking, although weakening the rock and hence reducing the work index, would in no way enhance the liberation of the cassiterite from the host minerals. Intergranular cracking, which would lead to enhanced liberation, was difficult to discern under reflected light, but there was evidence of such cracking in some of the sections examined. Figures 1 and 2 are examples of typical sections before and after heat treatment. Figures la and lb - show cassiterite in hematite, Fig. lb, in normal incident illumination, illustrating clearly that after heat treatment, transgranular fracture is evident in the cassiterite. If any intergranular cracking has occurred, it is not evident in this photograph. Figures 2a and 2b show cassiterite in quartz before and after treatment. Fracturing in both minerals after treatment can clearly be seen, and there is evidence of intergranular fracturing. However, protruding "arms" of cassiterite are severed by transgranular fracture. Subgrains of quartz have also been isolated by trans¬granular fracture. There is major transgranular cracking across the wider sections of cassiterite. Discussion The effect of rapidly heating South Crofty tin ore to 650°C, followed by water-quenching to room temperature, has been studied by observing the fracture networks in mineral grains. The choice of 650°C as the heating temperature was influenced by the work of Sherring (1981), who found considerable reduction in grinding resistance after thermal pretreatment of the same ore. Scheding et al. (1981), however, have shown, by means of a crude calculation, that heat treatment cannot be justified solely on the basis of reduced grinding costs. The cost of heat treatment far out-weighs that of grinding, resulting in the combined costs for heat treatment being over six times that for grinding unheated material. The most economically attractive aspect of heat treatment is the possibility of enhanced liberation of the valuable mineral due to increased intergranular rather than transgranular fracture. Grinding costs would be greatly reduced by improved liberation at coarser sizes, and the costs of ancillary processes, such as dewatering and tailings disposal, would be reduced. The most significant economic effect, however, would be in improved metallurgical efficiency. Improved liberation would increase concentrate grades, and recoveries would be higher, particularly in the case of ores where high slime losses are produced due to the excessively fine grinding required to produce adequate liberation. Manser (1983) has shown that only a 1% increase in tin recovery, at the same concentrate grade, would be sufficient to offset heat treatment costs on South Crofty ore. Heavy liquid analysis and shaking table separation have been used to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment on processing (Binns, 1984; Scheding, 1981; Sherring, 1981). However, treatment of unheated and heated samples of South Crofty ore, ground to the same product size, by such methods have shown little evidence of improved metallurgical efficiency after thermal pretreatment. The large amount of transgranular fracturing revealed by reflected light studies helps to explain this lack of improvement. Samarium (Sm), as one of the rare earth elements (REEs), has gained significant attention in the production of samarium- cobalt (SmCo) magnets due to their high corrosion and oxidation resistance, as well as their high-temperature stability. SmCo magnets find applications in various industries, including but not limited to national defense, aerospace, military and medical equipment. Sm and Co have been classified as critical metals due to their economic importance and supply risk. Recovering Sm from SmCo magnets is an effective method to ensure a stable supply. The present study investigates an integrated hydrometallurgical treatment and combustion process for the preparation of rare earth oxide (Sm2O3 ) powders from SmCo. Initially, SmCo powders are exposed to nitric acid, and the resulting slurry is selectively oxidized at 250 °C to obtain Sm(NO3)3 , Co2O3 and Fe2O3 . Subsequently, the selectively oxidized powders are leached with water to extract Sm. Sm2O3 powders are produced from the obtained leaching solution using an energy- and time-efficient solution combustion process. Finally, the optimal conditions for the production of Sm2O3 are identified, and the produced powder is characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis.

This paper presents a vision system capable of providing an accurate estimate for the volume of stockpiles using 2D images. By imaging a stockpile from multiple viewpoints with a two-camera system, a 3D point cloud of known scale is generated using image-based 3D reconstructions. With a small amount of user interaction, the points that correspond to the surface of the stockpile are extracted and used to measure the volume. The hardware required for the two-camera system is light enough to be carried by a small unmanned aircraft and is a cheaper alternative to LiDAR while still being competitive in terms of accuracy. When testing the volume measurement algorithm on a stockpile of known volume, the measured output was found to have less than a 3% error from the ground truth.

Mt. Newman Mining Co. is now completing an expansion program, begun even before initial construction was complete, which will result in facilities with the ability to ship over 30 million tons of iron ore per year by early 1973. Confidence in such rapid future growth was evidenced by careful planning for the future expansion of those facilities provided for initial operation of the project which first shipped ore on 1 April 1969. Ore sales contracts totaling more than 300 million tons have been negotiated, thus justifying the optimism which led the joint venturers to provide over $200 million in initial investment and a like amount in capital required to finance the continuing expansion program. Members of the Mt. Mining in Mexico is one of its post traditional activities, whose influence in the development of important cities and communications has been decisive. Precious metals and, to some extent, copper and tin were known and used before the Colonial period, but from the sixteenth century to tie end of the nineteenth century, mining and metallurgical industries were concentrated in the precious metals, mainly silver. This silver was exported to Spain and other countries under the Spanish. Rule, Mexican peso was known world wide since the end of the sixteenth century and Mexico ranked as the first silver producer since the eighteenth century.

The rare earths in elemental form are required for a variety of scientific and technological purposes. They are not easily obtained in this form, due to the great chemical stability of the rare-earth compounds and the strong tendency of elemental metals to react with everything they come in to contact with, especially at high temperatures. Beginning in the 1950s, when sufficient quantities of separated rare earths became available, as the result of intense research and development, three processing routes were developed to accomplish the preparation of all 16 naturally occurring rare-earth elements. They are chemical reduction of the halide intermediates, the oxides and electrochemical reduction of chlorides and oxide-fluoride mixtures. Not all the processes are effective with all the rare earths. In spite of the celebrated similarity of trivalent rare earths, the physical properties of individual rare-earth elements are sufficiently different that a variety of techniques are required for their preparation. The development of reduction processes for the rare-earth metals are covered in this paper, with focus on the oxide reduction routes. The strong reliance of effective reduction processes on the fundamental science of reduction reactions is highlighted.

In longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining with an inclined seam, the recovery rate is low and equipment stability is poor due to the unbalanced top-coal drawing process. To address these problems, this paper proposes the dynamic group caving method (DGCM), whose basic premise is that when the drawn volume of top coal from a support reaches about half, the next support begins drawing top coal, and the drawing process between the two supports is half done. Using particle flow code (PFC), the caving mechanism of top coal under DGCM was investigated. The results are of significance to realize high efficiency and precise caving in LTCC mining with an inclined seam.

The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel project involves the construction of a bored tunnel under Thimble Shoal Channel in Chesapeake Bay (VA), between two artificial islands and parallel to the existing tube tunnel, built in the sixties. It will be the first transportation tunnel constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), a 44-foot-diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) named "Chessie," manufactured by Herrenknecht, and which was assembled at the CBBT's southernmost island, with extremely limited room, live adjacent traffic, and difficult access. "Chessie" was successfully launched in February 2023 and this paper describes this complex and challenging process.

"INTRODUCTION Located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas State, Mexico, the Peñasquito Operation is comprised of the Peñasco and Chile Colorado (Brecha Azul) deposits. Open pit mining (pre-stripping) began in 2010 and full production commenced during 2011. The open pit mines feed both a sulphide concentrator (mill) and a heap leach pad. The project is owned by Goldcorp, Inc. Penasquito is a poly metallic deposit with Au, Ag, Zn and Pb being recovered as payable metals. As a consequence of lower grade ores expected with advancing mine-life Peñasquito is facing a declining metal production profile. To maximize returns and asset value plant modifications including the addition of a carbon pre-float circuit and a pyrite leach circuit to improve recovery are currently being undertaken. This carbon pre-float circuit will enable the recovery of precious and base metals from carbonaceous sediments. This material is currently being stockpiled. With the associated increase in complexity in the process circuit, the requirement of the ore control system to accurately predict ore feed characteristics is critical to maximizing metal recovery at the Penasquito operation. The addition of the carbon pre-float circuit was also a key driver in allowing the Chile Colorado open pit to be developed. These conditions alongside Goldcorp’s drive to increase profitability, and maximize net asset value has created challenges. These challenges are numerous and are multifaceted, however the ability to accurately route materials from the ore control system is critical to site success, and some of these challenges have been overcome by the adoption and implementation of a new ore control (OC) technology. Examples of these technological innovations in the ore control program are discussed in this paper and include improvements in geo-modeling, material routing and reconciliation. Successful implementation of these elements has led to significant improvements in selectivity, performance, and data management, while reducing the variance between planning and execution, thus helping to drive overall improvement across the operation."

[Screening by centrifugal force is an unique, subject, for with the exception of only one vibrating screen presently on the market, all vibrating screens depend upon, gravity to pass material through a sizing mesh or screen cloth. This one screen that sizes by centrifugal force and utilizes gravity only to convey materiel along the screen, is the SYMONS V-Screen. This screen was designed by Loren Symons, a member of the family that has contributed so much to the metallic and non-metallic mineral processing industries. Among Symons' other outstanding contribution to these industries are the original Cone Crusher which revolutionized reduction crushing practice, the first high-speed horizontal vibrating screen, the original Rod Deck Screen, and one of the earliest vibrating Bar Grizzlies.]

The second underground coal gasification experiment conducted by ERDA's Laramie Energy Research Center at a site near Hanna, Wyoming, was completed on July 30, 1976. During the experiment production reached 0.32 Mm 3/d (12 Mft3/d) of 6.9 MJ/m3 gas (175 Btu/ft 3 ). Approximately 6100 tonne (6700 ton) of coal were gasified during the experiment. Energy return ratios of 4.5 to 5.3, cold gas - thermal efficiencies of 76 to 89 percent, and overall process efficiencies of 65 to 74 percent were achieved during the second Hanna experiment. This paper describes the experiment and the results obtained with emphasis given to the determination of the energy recovered relative to energy consumed in conducting the test. Data from this determination are compared with previously published data from the first test conducted at Hanna during 1973-1974.

Underground room-and-pillar mining operations in the Warrior Coal Field in Alabama frequently suffer instability due to soft floor and thinly-laminated immediate roof. The investigation covered by this paper concerns a mine that was experiencing ground-control problems with weak floor conditions. Four hundred ft above the presently producing seam, another seam has been mined out. Several roof falls occurred locally, and as much as two ft of floor heaves have been experienced.
