Keeping an eye on the future while honoring the past, Frank McAllister, chief executive officer of Stillwater Mining Co., and life member of the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, gave the keynote address to a packed house during the 23rd National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum Banquet in Leadville, CO on Sept. 11. McAllister?s company made news just days before the induction ceremony, when it was announced that Stillwater Mining would acquire Marathon PGM Corp. for $118 million (ME, Oct. page 14).

Shallow ore deposits are mined by surface methods but a depth is reached in the case of most deposits after which underground methods are applied for the extraction of the remaining ore. The determination of this depth and its analysis is the subject of this paper. In order to determine transition depth from open-pit to underground mining on the basis of the allowable and economically feasible overall stripping ratios, an economic-mathematical equation is first introduced. Using the achieved equation and an analytical procedure on a particular two-dimensional hypothetical tabulate deposit, an effective formula is then established. The formula introduced here, together with the procedure adopted, could be used in all similar mining situations by the mining design engineer.

INTRODUCTION Flotation equipment is becoming more definitive in design as well as greater in dimension. The last ten years have witnessed the implementation of large flotation cells ranging in size from 28 to 85 cubic meters. However, small plants still operate with cells as small as 3 cubic meters. These changes have increased the operational sensitivity of the flotation system to the chemical reagents used. No scientific study has been undertaken to develop the relationship between the size of equipment and the response of reagents in the flotation system. Hence, this article is an attempt to present several observations from past experience for the purpose of stimulating future research in an area previously ignored and perhaps subsequently not used to advantage. CONVENTIONAL FLOTATION Recent advances in conventional flotation cell design have been made in two areas: a. Flotation cells are becoming larger, and b. Basic design of flotation cells has changed. They can be classified into two types: deep cell and shallow draft cell. Size and design changes of flotation cells have a greater effect on frother performance than on the performance of other chemical reagents. Hence, the discussion in the following sections is restricted to the impact of frothers in the flotation system. Flotation Cell Size The advent of increasing flotation cell size has resulted in the increase of frother consumption. There appears to be a correlation between reduced horsepower (kilowatt) consumption and increased frother consumption per ton of ore processed in the circuit. This is more prevalent when the frother chemistry remains unchanged. Another reason for increased frother consumption is the increased distance between the rotating central shaft and the lip of the cell for larger flotation machines. Increasing this distance results in increased surface area corresponding to the larger cell size. Reduced power input per ton combined with the need for longer, stronger load support of the froth bubble as a result of increasing cell size has resulted in the development of a new series of stronger and more persistent frothers. By the same token, these newer, stronger frothers are difficult to control when applied to the smaller cells. This is true even at lower dosages because the break point between too much frother and not enough frother for optimum metallurgy is normally very narrow. This problem is often exaggerated when operators have established an optimum setting for pulp level and air for the particular frother in use. Generally, the tendency is to operate the flotation cells simply by adjusting frother dosage. The increase in frother strength to accommodate the large cells often results in the realization, after a retrofit, that the existing pump box or sump which is still handling the same volume of concentrate is no longer adequate in size. Flotation Cell Design The two most common flotation cell designs installed during the past ten years are the deep cell and the shallow draft cell. The deep cell provides for complete mixing of air and pulp at the bottom of the cell. The shallow draft cell does all the mixing/pumping in the bottom haft of the cell whereas the mixing of the air is performed further up the shaft and is brought into contact with the pulp midway up the vortex. There are many preferences for one or the other. It is the author's contention that both designs have very valid concepts and must simply be suited to the particular situation as required by the operator. The following comments are subjective observations which should be explored in greater detail. The deep cell mixes both air and pulp together at the bottom of the cell requiring a full depth ascending of the homogenized air to the surface to form the froth layer. This design, in combination with charged air, provides for good concentrate grade control under adverse conditions of selectivity, especially when faced with a fine grind and a slime-laden gangue. A selective frother can be applied without a competitive loss in recovery. One of the conditions for good selectivity in this environment is operating at medium pulp solids concentration in the range of twenty-six to thirty-four per cent (26-34%). When a higher solids concentration is used in combination with a coarse grind, it becomes difficult to maintain the same recovery with a selective frother due to higher pulp viscosity. This condition sometimes results in an unacceptable coalescence of the air bubbles as they ascend the full height of the deep cell. The increased pulp viscosity at higher solids concentration can also retard the flotation kinetics. The combination of decreased surface area of dispersed air and slower kinetics can result in reduced recovery causing coarse particles to continue to drop

Significant strides have been made in optimizing the design of filtration and pressurization systems used on the enclosed cabs of mobile mining equipment to reduce respirable dust and provide the best air quality to the equipment operators. Considering all of the advances made in this area, one aspect that still needed to be evaluated was a comparison of the efficiencies of the different filters used in these systems. As high-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) filters provide the highest filtering efficiency, the general assumption would be that they would also provide the greatest level of protection to workers. Researchers for the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) speculated, based upon a previous laboratory study, that filters with minimum efficiency reporting value, or MERV rating, of 16 may be a more appropriate choice than HEPA filters in most cases for the mining industry. A study was therefore performed comparing HEPA and MERV 16 filters on two kinds of underground limestone mining equipment, a roof bolter and a face drill, to evaluate this theory. Testing showed that, at the 95-percent confidence level, there was no statistical difference between the efficiencies of the two types of filters on the two kinds of mining equipment. As the MERV 16 filters were less restrictive, provided greater airflow and cab pressurization, cost less and required less-frequent replacement than the HEPA filters, the MERV 16 filters were concluded to be the optimal choice for both the roof bolter and the face drill in this comparative analysis case study. Another key finding of this study is the substantial improvement in the effectiveness of filtration and pressurization systems when using a final filter design.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimate of the total remaining reserves of lignite in this country as of Jan. 1, 1967 was about 448 billion tons. This represents 27 percent of the total coal reserves on a tonnage basis and about 17 percent on a thermal basis. Approximately 98 percent of these reserves are in a vast lignite field located in western North Dakota and eastern Montana. This field also extends north into the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Despite these large reserves and relative ease of mining by stripping operations, lignite production historically has accounted for less than 1 percent of the national total. This is largely due to the fact that the lignite deposits are located in an area that has no large centers of population and the economical radius of transportation is limited by its relatively high moisture and low heating value. Commercial utilization of North Dakota lignite for power production became firmly established in the mid-1920's with the development of the first successful lignite-burning equipment. Most of the early lignite-fired boilers were equipped with spreader stokers, but as the size of the plants increased, pulverized-coal firing became the more popular method, and with few exceptions, the plants built during the past 15 years are pc-fired.

San Francisco, CA will host about 1,500 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world during the biannual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), June 19-22. These professionals are gathering in a city that has seen much under-ground work throughout its history. And, today, the San Francisco region has more than $4.6-billion in tunneling projects under way. The RETC will include three-and-a-half days of technical programming, complete with proceedings, two short courses, two field trips and a host of social activities. In addition, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 127 exhibitors in 152 booths, an RETC record. The following is a brief list of activities that will take place during the conference. This paper presents pit slope monitoring and back-analysis case studies con-ducted to evaluate and, if possible, stabilize slopes at the Berkeley Pit in Butte, MT. Two specific slopes were studied in detail. The first slope was determined to be near limiting equilibrium, as evidenced by its response to the initiation and cessation of mining, while the second failed on three occasions. Back-analysis of the failed slope verified the laboratory-derived geomechanical properties of the earth materials. Early detection of slope movement can show a need to take action, including modifying slope geometry, dewatering if the slope were wet, and/or investigating and implementing artificial supports. Monitoring slope displacements in open-pit mines can supply data for predicting collapses and preventing serious damage, injuries, and/or loss of life.

The requirements of metals by modern society have created big challenges for mining engineers minerals processing engineers, metallurgical engineers and economists to produce these metals economically from mineral deposits which contain, with time, less and less value. The advances of science and technology allow, today, the exploitation of mineral deposits which only few years ago would not have been considered economical. However, there are limitations both on the minimum grade of recoverable values contained in the ore to be fed to a mill or on the concentrate to be smelted, and on the maximum content of "impurities" i.e. chemical elements which are difficult or expensive to refine from the ore, from the concentrate or from the metal. It is also known that the cost of treatment in a mill or in a smelter, for unit of metal contained in the ore or in the concentrate, increases as the grade of the recoverable values contained in them decreases and also if the content of impurities increases. Experiments conducted with limestone dusts and dolomitic marble dusts have indicated that when rock dust is wetted and subsequently dried, it becomes a solid, non-dispersible cake. However, in order to be effective, rock dust must be able to disperse as individual particles to inert. To counteract this, rock dust manufacturers created treated rock dusts that will resist caking after moisture exposure. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers conducted a series of laboratory-scale experiments on four base rock dusts and their treated counterparts to assess the effectiveness of various anti-caking additives after being exposed to moisture and then dried. The dusts were exposed to moisture using humidity cabinets having a high relative humidity (99% RH) and by also exposing the rock dust bed to water through bottom wicking. The dusts were then evaluated for dispersibility after drying using the NIOSH-designed dust dispersion chamber. The anticaking additives were different concentrations of stearic acid, oleic acid, and xylene-based surfactants. All results were compared to a reference rock dust used to conduct large-scale experiments in the Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL), Fairchance, PA. When the untreated dusts were dried after exposure to moisture for one day, no dispersion was measured. However, rock dusts treated with anti-caking agents were readily dispersible even after exposure to moisture for six months. This report details the analysis and characterization of anti-caking additives using the NIOSH-designed dispersion chamber and the 20-L explosion test chamber. INTRODUCTION In order for a coal dust explosion to propagate, five elements are required. In addition to the fire triangle in which three elements are necessary to sustain a fire—fuel (coal dust), heat (ignition source), and an oxidizer (oxygen in air)—a combustible dust explosion requires dispersion of a dust cloud (pressure wave) and confinement of a dust cloud (underground mine entry) (1). Coal dust explosions can originate anywhere in a mine. For example, when a small volume of a flammable methane and air mixture is ignited in a closed end, the high-temperature gases rapidly expand to create a pressure wave, sometimes referred to as a “pioneer wave,” that may steepen into a shock wave as it propagates away from the ignition source. The shock wave produces a wind that disperses the dust preferentially from any elevated and exposed surfaces (roof, ribs, belt structure, cribbing, etc.). Factors that are known to affect the intensity of an explosion are the dust particle size, the location of the dust within the entry, the dust dispersibility, and the volatility of the coal dust (1). Particles less than 75 μm (< 200 mesh) in size are most reactive (2). Dusts that are located on the roof, ribs, and elevated surfaces are more readily dispersed than dusts on the floor. Therefore, application of quality rock dust in sufficient quantities is essential to inert coal dust and to prevent continued flame propagation. 30 CFR 75.402 and 75.403 require 80% total incombustible content be maintained within 40 ft of the face, and 30 CFR 75.2 defines rock dust acceptable for use in underground coal mines. It also defined that “when rock dust is wetted and dried, will not form a cake”.

Introduction FMC&apos;s Paradise Peak gold mine was discovered by staff geologists in July 1983. Located south of Gabbs, in western Nevada, the deposit contains about 11 Mt (12 million st) of ore grading at 3.6 g/t (0.105 oz per st) of gold and 129 g/t (3.75 oz per st) silver. It is estimated that the ore contains 34 t (1.1 million oz) of recoverable gold and 933 t (30 million oz) of recoverable silver. The 3.6 kt/d (4000 stpd) mill began operation April 14, 1986, just 18 months after Davy McKee completed a feasibility study and construction, and two-and-a-months ahead of schedule. It also came in about 10% under budget at a cost of about $100 million. Crushing Run-of-mine ore is delivered from the mine in 45-t (50-st) haul trucks to a 272-kt (300,000-st) capacity open air stockpile. Ore is reclaimed using 5 m3 (7 cu yd) front-end loaders that feed a 91-t (100-st) hopper equipped with a 610- x 610-mm (24- x 24-in.) grizzly. A 1.4- x 11-m (54-in. x 35-ft) apron feeder delivers ore from the hopper by way of a vibrating grizzly screen with 127 mm (5 in.) openings to a 1- x 1.3-m (43- x 51-in.) Rexnord jaw crusher. Crushed material is conveyed to a 1.8- x 4-m (6- x 14-ft) Link Belt vibrating screen equipped with a 50-mm (2-in.) manganese grizzly bar deck. Screen oversize is fed to a 1.7/0.6-m (5.5 ft) Rexnord standard cone crusher. Product from this crusher joins the -50 mm (-2 in.) screen undersize and is conveyed to a 136-t (150-st) surge bin. Three hydraulically driven belt feeders deliver ore from the ore bin to three 2 x 6 m (7 x 20 ft) Link Belt single-deck tertiary screens fitted with 6 x 25 mm (0.25 x 1 in.) slotted polyethylene screens. Screen undersize - -6 mm (-0.25 in.) rock - is conveyed to a 3.6-kt (4000-st) ore storage bin. Screen oversize is delivered by way of a conveyor to a 91-t (100-st) surge bin. From this bin, two belt feeders feed ore to two 1.7 m (66 in.) Rexnord Gyradisc crushers, which are in closed circuit with the tertiary screens. Design features include magnetic protection for tramp iron removal and sloping floors and pump sumps for ease of clean up. Dust scrubbers keep the working environment clean and in compliance with state dust emission regulations. Grinding Two 1 x 4.5 m (3.5 x 15 ft) belt feeders deliver ore from the fine ore bin to a conveyor belt that feeds it to the 5 x 7 m (16 x 22 ft) Allis-Chalmers ball mill. The conveyor belt is equipped with a Merrick weightometer. This controls feed rate to the ball mill by speed control on the hydraulic motors driving the feeders. The 2.6 MW (3500 hp) powered mill grinds 3.6 kt/a (4000 stpd) to an average grind of 85% -75 µm (-200 mesh). The mill is in closed circuit with four 660 mm (26 in.) Krebs cyclones. Three of these are normally in operation while one is a standby. Warman pumps feed the cyclones through a cyclone distribution manifold. The cyclone underflow returns to the ball mill, which has a 300% average circulating load. Mill discharge pH is 11, and that is obtained through pebble lime addition to the feed belt. Cyclone overflow is sampled using a Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampler. It then flows to a 27-m-diam (90-ft-diam) Eimco thickener. Thickener overflow is returned to the grinding circuit, while underflow at 50% solids is pumped to the leaching circuit. Grinding-circuit design features include a steeply sloped floor for ease of clean up, an open area over the pumps for maintenance accessibility, and a ball hopper with a self discharge bottom to speed ball addition. Other features include a mill liner handler and an air clutch that connects the mill motor to the mill.

"In his 1989 book, The New Realities, Peter F. Drucker, Clark Professor of Social Science at Claremont Graduate School, Claremont, CA, stated: “Information is data endowed with relevance and purpose. Converting data into information thus requires knowledge. And knowledge, by definition, is specialized” (p. 209).The discipline of mineral valuation is knowledge-based and requires a mineral valuer to collect, analyze and interpret data that are material to a mineral-valuation assignment. In so doing, the valuer turns the data into information (data come first, followed by information as determined by the mineral valuer) for use by the client (from whom the valuer obtained the mineral-valuation assignment) and other intended users. The valuer uses his or her experience and education (each valuer’s knowledge base) supported by a foundation built upon competency, materiality and transparency, the three pillars of mineral valuation (minerals valuation, mineral-property valuation).The International Mineral Valuation Standards Template (IMVAL Template), third edition dated May 2018, defines mineral valuation as: “The estimation of the value of a mineral property in money or monetary equivalent. The word ‘valuation’ can be used to refer to the estimated value (the valuation conclusion) or to refer to the preparation of the estimated value (the act of valuing)” (p. 14).Furthermore, the IMVAL Template clearly separates valuation from evaluation: “The template deals with valuation, which is distinct from evaluation. The distinction inherent in these defined terms is that valuation addresses the estimation of value of a mineral property, whereas evaluation addresses the broader assessment of a mineral property for an investment decision (p. 2).”This is an important difference because the minerals industry commonly makes investment decisions using feasibility studies to evaluate a proposed mineral development and production project. The purpose of such investment-decision analysis is distinctly different from valuation of a mineral property, no matter where that property lies upon the mineral explorationdevelopment- production-reclamation timeline (Fig. 1). Valuation involves terms such as market value, just compensation, fair value, etc., whereas investment-decision analysis is concerned with the economic viability of a given proposed project. Although feasibility analysis and market valuation can both use discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis as a tool, the formulation of the DCFs and their interpretation are different."

The Hurtières Tunnel was built in 1995 with drill and blast method, in metamorphic schist. It is located between Lyon and Torino on the A 43 motorway in the French Alps. During the construction, a geological hazard was encountered, which caused a massive ground collapse. The tunnel was filled up with 3,000 m3of glacial materials. Geological investigations realized after the accident showed that a narrow glacial valley was present at this location the water table was 40 m above the tunnel level. The paper will describe the collapse and the remedial methods which were implemented to proceed through the failure area. These included drainage works,2,000 m3 grouting and 6,200 ml jet grouting columns.

"During the last ten years great strides have been made, on the Mesabi Range, in the practice of beneficiating low grade iron ore material. By .beneficiation is meant all methods of removing impurities, and raising the iron content to a point where it can be sold in open market, the principal impurities being silica and moisture. The • general processes to which low grade iron ores are amenable are as follows:1. Thermal(a) Drying ; removes hydroscopic or atmospheric moisture. .(b) Calcining; removes carbon dioxide from iron carbonate, molecular water from hydrated hematites, and atmospheric moisture.Roasting; removes sulphur, carbon dioxide, molecular water and atmospheric moisture.Agglomeration; primarily for the purpose of preparing finely divided material for blast furnace; briquetting and sintering.2. MechanicalScreen sizing; removes rock and sand.Classification; removes sand by means of currents of water of varying velocities.Log washing; removes fine sand.Jigging; removes larger particles of impurities than is possible by log washing. Ball mill grinding circuits can be subject to upsets that arise from variable characteristics of the feed ore. These upsets are transients in critical circuit variables such as ball mill mass holdup, circulating load, sump level, cyclone efficiency and product particle size. They may occur frequently so that the operation is continuously fluctuating or they may be of such magnitude that some of the equipment is overloaded, resulting in shutdown, or an undesirable product particle size. The feed ore characteristics that influence ball mill circuit behavior in this manner include the grindability of the ore, the eventual transport characteristics of the ore in the mills and the feed ore size distribution. Control strategies for grinding circuits using conventional proportional-integral (PI) control have limitations to their effectiveness in controlling against feed ore disturbances. The first of these are the interactive nature of two or more control loops on a single circuit. Under some circumstances they begin to fight each other, increasing control error and settling time. PI control loop gain constants can be tuned to give best response for some set of conditions but once these change, as they would with a change in the feed ore, they are no longer the "best" ones (Shinsky, 1967). Due to these limitations, alternatives to conventional PI control strategies have been investigated for grinding as well as other mineral processing operations. These alternatives, all computer-based, include self tuning regulators, decoupling control and optimal control (Herbst and Bascur, 1983).

"Minnesota has robust reclamation standards and have proven results in the taconite mining industry. Reclamation of overburden spoils, lean ore spoils and fine tailings from taconite production has generally been successful on the Iron Range, using a low input standard reclamation practice. Success at reestablishing vegetation on these landscapes is likely due to fairly favorable chemical and physical properties (e.g., few limitations due to acidic generating materials, metal toxicities and water and nutrient holding capacities). However, coarse tailings reclamation has proven more difficult, presumably due to lower nutrients and challenges with moisture holding capacities. Research efforts conducted since 1990 have struggled to develop a reclamation strategy for coarse tailings that meets the Minnesota Mineland Reclamation Rules, Chapter 6130. However, new breakthroughs in scram mining technologies are producing fine and coarse tailings that have not been encountered nor reclaimed in northern Minnesota. Scram mining in Minnesota is defined as those mining operations that produce natural iron ore concentrates. Innovative research is underway to investigate and determine successful reclamation strategies to reclaim scram mining tailings from these scram mining operations. The research program is conducted through collaboration with SEH, Prairie Restorations, Inc. (PRI) and Mining Resources, LLC with funding support from the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Laurentian Vision Partnership minescapes grant program.The research program was divided into three phases:Phase I. Bench-scale testing to identify successful treatments to reclaim and restore scram tailings through evaluating surface soils amendments, viable seed mixes and plant germination, growth and densities. Phase I was completed in early 2015.Phase II. Field-scale pilot trial to test larger scale effectiveness of the treatments deemed successful in Phase I and test various vegetative assemblages and planting techniques focused on the unique challenges with scram tailing basins. Phase II was completed in late 2016 with a summary monitoring report.Phase III. Produce a technical report of results for the research undertaken in this study, as well as compile prior reclamation results used during previous Minnesota iron mining reclamation projects on tailings basin applications. Phase III was completed in 2017 with a summary monitoring report and recommendations."

Earlier publications from The University of Alabama have indicated that column flotation performance is improved when operating at low pulp levels and when the feed is directed into the froth phase. To validate these early observations a series of tests were performed in which the position of the feed entry to the column and the pulp-froth interface were systematically varied. The optimum grade-recovery relationship was achieved with high feed entry (WA) of column height) and very low pulp levels (<10% of column height). The position of the pulp-froth interface appears to be the more critical variable. When operating in this mode (1. e. at low pulp levels) column flotation becomes. in reality. a froth separation process.

The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) investigated ways to increase mine airflow to underground metal/nonmetal (M/NM) mine working areas to improve miners? health and safety. One of those areas is controlled recirculation. Because the quantity of mine air often cannot be increased, reusing part of the ventilating air can be an effective alternative, if implemented properly, until the capacity of the present system is improved. The additional airflow can be used to provide effective dilution of contaminants and higher flow velocities in the underground mine environment. Most applications of controlled recirculation involve taking a portion of the return air and passing it back into the intake to increase the air volume delivered to the desired work areas. OMSHR investigated a Nevada gold mine where shaft rehabilitation was in progress and one of the two main fans was shut down to allow reduced air velocity for safe shaft work. Underground booster fan operating pressures were kept constant to maintain airflow to work areas, inducing controlled recirculation in one work zone. Investigation into system behavior and the effects of recirculation on the working area during times of reduced primary ventilation system airflow would provide additional information on implementation of controlled recirculation into the system and how these events affect M/NM ventilation systems. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health monitored the ventilation district when both main fans were operating and another scenario with one of the units turned off for maintenance. Airflow and contaminants were measured to determine the exposure effects of induced recirculation on miner health. Surveys showed that 19% controlled recirculation created no change in the overall district airflow distribution and a small reduction in district fresh air intake. Total dust levels increased only modestly and respirable dust levels were also low. Diesel particulate matter (DPM) levels showed a high increase in district intake mass flow, but minor increases in exposure levels related to the recirculation percentage. Utilization of DPM mass flow rates allows input into ventilation modeling programs to better understand and plan for ventilation changes and district recirculation effects on miners? health.

El petrodiesel es un colector común para la flotación de carbón, pero la partición de compuestos orgánicos de diesel (DRO por sus siglas en inglés) en corrientes de proceso no ha sido ampliamente estudiada. Investigaciones preliminares sugieren que bajo esquemas de dosificación normales los contenidos residuales totales de DRO en aguas de procesos deben estar limitados a la fracción soluble en agua (WSF por sus siglas en inglés) sub-ppm. Es más, los hidrocarburos aromáticos poli-cíclicos (PAH por sus siglas en inglés) debería segmentarse de manera proporcional con los compuestos orgánicos de diesel (DRO). El propósito de este estudio fue confirmar estos resultados en pruebas de flotación realizadas en laboratorio. Se midieron los contenidos totales de DRO Y PAH en aguas asociadas con los flujos o corrientes de concentrados y relaves. Los resultados muestran que las aguas con concentrados tenían de manera consistente mayores cantidades de DRO que las aguas de relaves. Es más, los contenidos de DRO en ambos flujos generalmente se incrementaban con el aumento de la dosis de diesel. De acuerdo con la investigación preliminar, los DRO parecían estar limitados a la fracción soluble en agua (WSF) y los PAH tendían a segmentarse proporcionalmente con los DRO. Bajo condiciones de operación típicas, los DRO residuales no deberían representar una preocupación medioambiental, pero deben evitarse situaciones que permitan una sobredosis significativa de diesel.

The handleability monitor has been specifically designed to provide a simple, rapid and on-site assessment of the whole or part consignment of a coal blend in its ‘as-received’ condition. Evaluation has been carried out at a number of coal-handling plants, on both metallurgical and power station coals from a variety of sources world-wide. The results which are used to predict which coals could routinely pass through a handling plant at line capacity, without causing blockage or delay, have also been correlated with moisture, ash and size analyses of the coal to develop a predictive model of handleability.
