Hypochlorite leaching system is a strong oxidizing solution for metal sulfides, which are naturally associated with gold extraction. This study evaluated the hypochlorite leaching of refractory gold ore by using the response surface method–central composite design (RSM-CCD) as a statistical approach in determining the optimum condition of gold extraction from refractory gold ore. The studied parameters for the gold recovery were pH (4 to 6), concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 (0.5 to 1.5 M) and NaCl (2.5 to 3.5 M) in the solution. It was found that the maximum gold extraction of 82.46% (13.85 g/t) was achieved at a pH of 4.0 with NaCl and Ca(OCl)2 concentrations of 2.93 M and 1.08 M, respectively. The statistical analysis also revealed that the amount of gold recovery in chloride solution was significantly depended on pH as the main factor, followed by concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl.

This manuscript aimed to examine the impact of operating parameters on the wet grinding of talc in a vertical-type stirred media mill. Within the scope of the research, the effects of operating parameters including media filling ratio, solid mass fraction, grinding media size, and grinding time were studied. The findings were assessed based on the product particle size (d50, d10), surface area (Sw), and energy consumption (Em). As a result of the present research, the following optimum grinding test conditions were determined: 65% media filling ratio, 40% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. After determining the optimum grinding conditions, the Box–Behnken statistical design was used to determine the effect of parameter interactions on the d50 size. The media filling ratio was found to significantly affect the decrease in d50 compared to the other two parameters. Furthermore, the minimum d50 size was also achieved under optimum grinding conditions.

Large surface mining projects in sparsely populated regions of the West have the potential to create disruptions in an area's social and economic character with potential effects on man that can far outweigh the physical and ecological effects on man's environment. The data and analyses involved in addressing the socioeconomic issues are additional to those traditionally associated with surface coal mining, such as those concerning land reclamation and water quality. Appropriate socioeconomic studies in conjunction with mine-planning can identify the potential problem areas in order that project measures can be taken to maximize the beneficial impacts and minimize the adverse effects of surface coal mining. The information required to conduct such socioeconomic analyses, available data sources, and the applicable analyses are described. Overall impacts of some proposed Western surface mines are summarized and potential mitigating steps discussed.

Electric locomotives powered by extensive electrical cabling systems were prevalent in the mining industry in the early days of the 20th Century [1]. Since the movement of tethered electrical mining locomotives was limited, the advent of diesel-powered mobile mining equipment provided more flexibility. This led the mining industry to be dominated by diesel-powered locomotives for most of the 20th Century and the entire 21st Century, to date. However, diesel power has certain drawbacks. Diesel-powered vehicles produce tailpipe emissions such as diesel particulate matter, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide. Mine workers exposed to these emissions were, and continue to be, subject to health issues such as respiratory problems, increased risk of lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease. [2][3]. Extensive ventilation systems are required to dilute the diesel exhaust and dissipate the heat generated by these vehicles. Moreover, as mines are getting deeper due to depleting resources, ventilation costs in diesel-powered mines are becoming increasingly high. These factors, coupled with the trend towards greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction in mine operations, has allowed zero-emission electric locomotive systems to gain traction. As lithium-ion battery technology is becoming more advanced, battery-powered electric vehicles can now perform duty cycles comparable to those of diesel-powered vehicles. Although battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are comparable to diesel-powered vehicles in terms of mobility, they have certain limitations. For instance, the amount of onboard energy is limited by the battery energy density and specific energy. The MT42 diesel haul truck from Epiroc, for example, has a fuel tank capacity of 580L, which is equivalent to around 1450 kWh of net electrical energy [4]. The electrified version of the MT42, on the other hand, has an onboard battery with 375 kWh of usable energy weighing around 4.9 metric tonnes [5]. Moreover, storing and refueling of diesel-powered vehicles is simple and quick, whereas battery energy storage and charging systems require extensive infrastructure development. Charging time is mostly limited by battery chemistry and design. Due to these limitations, the benefits of battery-powered mining vehicles are more likely to be realized with proper planning and optimization of the BEV fleet. This includes optimizing mining layouts for BEV use, charging infrastructure design, and management of onboard energy storage systems.

The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in Spring 1988, just one year prior to the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg open pit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600m above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought their latest open pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. This paper describes the start-up of the operation, highlighting synergies drawn from both the original Ertsberg experiences and the current Freeport Indonesia underground mines.

Broken rock mass and unreasonable stope structure parameters can cause excessive ore loss and dilution in sublevel caving; this is the main problem faced by caving mining in recent years. This paper proposes a stope structure parameter optimization method suitable for steeply inclined medium-thick broken ore bodies and evaluates the reliability and effectiveness through case studies. To solve the problem of large ore loss and dilution in the high-end wall sublevel caving method of Xilinhot fluorite mine, it is necessary to select proper stope structure parameters. Based on the theory of random media, an end-wall ore drawing experiment was carried out, and the bulk flow parameters needed to optimization of stope structure parameters were determined. In the experiment, it was found the draw-out body of high-end wall ore drawing showed a fine top and a thick bottom; the granular media had good fluidity. The reasonable caving step is determined to be 1.2 m instead of the 1.6 m originally used. Through the optimization experiment of the mining route position along the vein, the study found that the best route position is different with the ore body inclination. When the inclination angle of the ore body was 90°, the reasonable route was located in the center of the ore body. When the inclination angle of the ore body was between 85° and 90°, the route moved from the center of the ore body to the footwall at a rate of 22.5%. When the inclination angle of the ore body was between 80° and 85°, the route moved to the footwall at a rate of 54.8%. When the inclination angle of the ore body is not greater than 80°, the route should be arranged on the boundary of the footwall. Field application results showed the dilution rate reduced by 7.66% and the recovery rate increased by 7.31%. Field test results verify the effectiveness and applicability of the optimized stope structure, which corroborates the effectiveness and applicability of the optimized stope structure.

Standing supports have been used in coal mines for decades to enhance roof support capability. Sometimes standing supports are used as a tool to resist the lateral movement of spalled ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting a testing program for different types of standing supports (steel and timber) to investigate the effect of lateral loading on their vertical loading capacities and the factors affecting their lateral loading capacities. In this paper, the mine roof simulator (MRS), at the NIOSH Pittsburgh research facility, was used to determine the response of steel props to vertical and horizontal loadings. Finite element models (FEMs) were developed and verified using the tested steel props. To justify the testing program for testing standing supports with end-conditions of rock-like materials, the verified prop models were used to study the effect of a wide range of roof and floor materials (gray shale, shale, and claystone) on the critical buckling loads of the steel props. Also, several lateral loading scenarios were evaluated in which the steel props were laterally loaded at different heights. The critical buckling load for steel props setting up against a claystone roof and floor was found to be one-half of that shown by the MRS test where roof and floor platens are made of steel. Minimum prop performance was observed when the lateral load was applied at the mid-height of the steel prop, especially at small lateral displacement (less than 2 in).

Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. Huge banks of preparation plant refuse and other non¬saleable materials have accumulated over the years in all major United States coal producing areas. These banks, esthetically and commercially undesirable, can cause air and water pollution and land reclamation and mineral conservation problems for the industry and nearby communities Although some refuse banks have been reworked to recover saleable coal, all remain and accumulation continues. Even those previously processed continue as potential hazards. Among the several problems created by refuse banks, in situ combustion is most treacherous. Of the millions of tons of major accumulations, there are at least 450 refuse banks on, fire at this time Attempts to extinguish such fires are costly, impractical and generally unfruitful. Studies are in progress to evaluate the potential of processing such materials to eliminate the combustion capability and to yield usable fuel and nonfuel products. Aspects of the study now in. development for coal refuse include: (a) evaluation of characteristics (size, sink-float, ash, sulfur and calorific value) of the coal refuse materials which are known to be highly variable, (b) development of an ignition test having significance for in situ conditions, (c) study of processing capabilities (comminution for liberation, pilot plant washing tests), and (d) investigation of potentially significant properties of fuel and nonfuel products which could be altered to enhance their market potential.. Among the latter products are lightweight aggregate, fill for mine slushing operations, construction, etc: Plans are to extend the studies to include the design, erection, and test processing of refuse with a transportable plant,; which could provide basic economic and product utilization data from several locations

"We investigated experimentally and theoretically the adhesion behavior of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (At.f6) to different copper sulfides. The adsorption experiment showed cell densities of 10.74 × 106, 8.06 × 106, 3 × 106, 4.24 × 106 and 2.35 × 106 cells/cm2, respectively, on the surfaces of djurleite, bornite, covellite and chalcopyrite. The order was: djurleite > bornite > covellite > chalcopyrite. The results indicate that A. ferrooxidans has high affinity to adhering to the surfaces of djurleite and bornite in the acidic region. But the thermodynamic approach predicts that there will be no attachment of At.f6 to the surfaces of bornite, covellite and chalcopyrite. This discrepancy is due to the inadequate description of electrostatic interactions. The DLVO approach shows attachment of At.f6 to the surfaces of djurleite, bornite and covellite, and repulsion between At.f6 and chalcopyrite. The DLVO approach can explain the differences of the adhesion of At.f6 to different copper sulfides.IntroductionThe bioleaching of low-grade copper sulfides is a developing technology, and has been applied successfully to the extraction of copper from secondary sulfide minerals (Watling, 2006; Pradhan et al., 2008; Akcil and Deveci, 2010). The bioleaching of chalcopyrite is still a major challenge (Bosecker, 1997; Brierley and Brierley, 2001; Ehrlich, 2004). A study conducted at Billiton Process Research showed the following preferential order of sulfide minerals leached by mesophilic cultures: chalcocite > bornite > cubanite > covellite > pyrite > enargite > carrolite >> chalcopyrite (Dew et al., 1999). The bacteria can solubilize the valuable metals from the orebodies by the oxidation of minerals. Bacterial adhesion plays a critical role in the bioleaching processes (Chen et al., 2008; Harneit et al., 2006). Generally, bacterial adhesion can be explained by surface thermodynamics and the extended DLVO theory, in which the adhesion energy between the bacteria and mineral is calculated as a function of the separation distance (Sharma, 1999; Bos et al., 1999; Sharma and Hanumantha Rao, 2002). These methods take into account Lifshitz-van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions and acid-base interactions (Busscher et al., 2010). These interactions are very well understood and formulated in mathematical equations. The most important inputs in these calculations are surface energy, surface charge, electron donation and electron acceptance on the bacterial cell surface and mineral."

The main goal of this study was not only to investigate the effectiveness of the FGX Dry Separator for removing pure rock from run-of-mine coal producing a better feed stock for conventional coal preparation plants but also to optimize the FGX Dry Separator performance for producing a salable clean coal product without using the conventional wet coal preparation processes. A Model FGX-1 Dry Separator with feed throughput capacity of 10 tph was extensively tested at the Illinois Coal Development Park using two coal samples having distinctly different cleaning characteristics. Statistically designed experimental programs were conducted to indentify critical process variables and optimize FGX Dry Separator performance by systematic adjustments of critical process variable parameters. The coal cleaning performance of the FGX Dry Separator was evaluated for the particle size range of 63.5 x 4.76 mm in most cases, although FGX Dry Separator feed consisted of nominal -63.5 mm run-of-mine coals. The best cleaning performance obtained from the FGX Dry Separator is described by specific gravity of separation (SG50) and probable error (Ep) values of 1.98 and 0.17, respectively. The SG50 and Ep values for individual size fractions were as follow: 1.90 and 0.12 for the +50.8 mm size fraction, 1.95 and 0.18 for the 50.8 x 25.4 mm size fraction, 2.01 and 0.19 for the 25.4 x 12.7 mm size fraction, and 2.03 and 0.23 for the 12.7 x 4.76 mm size fraction. These process efficiency measures produced a clean coal with ash content of 13.38% from a feed coal with ash content of 34.45%. Ash content of tailings and middlings streams were 85.09% and 39.57%, respectively. Total sulfur contents of corresponding streams were 3.87%, 4.68%, 6.87%, and 4.62%. For a relatively easy to clean Illinois No 6 seam coal (Cleaning Index: 0.72), only about 0.42% of the clean coal (i.e., 1.6 float fraction) present in the feed was lost to the tailings stream. For a relatively difficult to clean coal (Cleaning Index: 0.53), about 0.98% of the clean coal present in the feed was lost to the tailings stream.

"Iron as an impurity in pyrophyllite ore affects pottery, ceramics and tile quality. We carried out the characterization of a pyrophyllite ore sample using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and wet chemical analysis. The study revealed the presence of 2.15% iron oxide (Fe2O3 ) along with silica and alumina as the major components, which constituted around 90% of the total sample. We carried out the removal of iron from the pyrophyllite using magnetic separation and acid leaching and found that wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) could remove 28% of iron values while oxalic acid leaching could remove up to 99.3%. The leaching kinetics of iron removal and the effects of pulp density, acid concentration, leaching time and temperature were also investigated. The optimum conditions for leaching were found to be leaching time of 60 minutes, temperature of 90°C, pulp density of 5%, oxalic acid concentration of 0.3 M, and particle size below 100 microns. Iron dissolution from the pyrophyllite sample can be best described by the diffusion of ions through the product layer of constant-size spherical particles. The breakdown of the pyrophyllite structure was evident from the FTIR and TGA studies. The activation energy of the leaching process over the temperature range was calculated to be 43.47 kJ/mol. IntroductionPyrophyllite is a naturally occurring phyllosilicate mineral composed of aluminum silicate hydroxide [Al2Si4O10(OH)2] as the major component and often associated with other minerals such as kaolinite, mica, quartz, rutile and epidote. It occurs in fine-grained sericite schist that is quarried as pyrophyllite (Pandit et al., 2008). In India, pyrophyllite occurs mainly in Madhya Pradesh state, Uttar Pradesh state and the Keonjhar district of Odisha state (Harpavat, 1995). Pure pyrophyllite is a highly desirable material for various applications due to its unique properties. It exhibits high refractive behavior, low thermalelectrical conductivity, low expansion coefficient, low hot-load deformation, low bulk density and high corrosion resistance to molten metal and basic slag (Rieger, 1997). It is used in the ceramics, refractory, foundry, electrical-insulation, sanitary-ware, glassmaking, pesticide and rubber fields. Compared with clay, it has lower thermal conductivity and coefficient of expansion, making it more suitable for refractory applications (Harben, 2002; The Minerals Yearbook, 2011)."

The use of chemical reagents in flotation has been studied in great detail, e.g. (1, 2, 3, 4). Important progress has been made on the understanding of surface chemistry concepts involved in flotation. However, such scientific studies are often very complex even for rather simple idealized systems. Therefore, the deve- lopment of predictive or quantitative tools for plant engineering evaluation is still in the evolutionary stages. Until further progress in fundamental work is achieved, the operating engineer is faced with semi-empirical physical testing of reagent changes on several sizes of the actual equipment under study to be confident of the economic viability of any change.

During the past century, the Florida Phosphate Industry has established an enviable record of innovative technology in nearly all aspects of mining and beneficiation. A notable exception is the lack of technology to improve the present practice of storing waste clay in earthen dams. The rule which has been adopted by the Department of Natural Resources states, "Since storage of clay wastes for long periods of time interferes with expeditious reclamation and since above grade storage of clays takes otherwise useful land out of production and raises potential health and safety problems, below grade storage and rapid reclamation techniques are encouraged." The two waste products from the beneficiation plant are clay slimes (-0.1 mm in size) and sand tailings. The sand tailings do not present a problem since the tailings rapidly dewater to a dry weight of about 100 pounds/ft3 and make good land fill. By contrast, disposal of waste clay slimes is a formidable task. The basic problem is simply that the waste clay not only dewaters very slowly, but also that the ultimate solids content is very low and in most cases the volume of the clay greatly exceeds the available volume of below ground storage of the mined land.

INTRODUCTION The solid fossil and nuclear fuels, but especially uranium, are given prominent, indeed leading, roles by energy experts in most long range estimates of world energy futures. Optimistic forecasts are inspired partly by the disproportionately large solid fuels resource base compared to present rates of consumption or to oil and gas resources, and partly by the vision of inexpensive high technology applications. Such a view overlooks the fact that while resource- use disparities and new technologies give allure to the promise of the solid fuels, they do not guarantee cheap solutions to the basic problems of solid fuel uses: viz., their relatively difficult conditions for efficient ignition and control, including the management of environmentally acceptable residuals disposal. Contrary to the varied versions of this optimistic hypothesis, this paper shows that a great many persistent economic and technical problems interfere with such a simple inference. These act as constraints which qualify or dispute much of the national energy policy based on existing modeling of solid fuel requirements and optimistic engineering evaluations. The assumptions and techniques of such exercises are sometimes at fault. As often as not, however, the distortions created in open market fuel com- petition due to misdirected national energy policies themselves are to blame for misdirected efforts. A number of interesting implications result. Among them are the distinct possibility that the low technology applications will dominate, so that more direct coal and less synfuel or nuclear use will occur; that, accordingly, exhaustion rates for uranium will be low, that the most extensive growth of solid fuel through 2000 will be in conventional pulverized coal cumbustors, and that the traded share of the world coal bum will be much larger than predicted. These trends will place much more pressure on oil and gas prices than forecast by most experts. On the way to these findings the paper demonstrates that solid fuel resource adequacy in situ, balanced against the projections of demands as capacity requirements, mean little as conventionally measured by years to exhaustion or potential supply schedules. Indeed, all stock concepts of demand requirements or of fuel re- sources must be tied to the paths of the unit costs and the deliverable prices of all substitute fuels and systems over time. This requires a dynamic analysis of supply and demand, integrated with geological and engineering constraints, to provide insights into the multiple modes of market and product substitution. Market forces rather than technical promise will determine the allocation of the solid fuels. Moreover, the equilibrium paths of individual fuel prices and market shares are not easily simulated by general or network models, and decision makers will continue to rely on the partial, local comparison of alternatives in their choices of fuel systems at any time. A well-defined geometric model for a mineral system and its liberation by size reduction is used to show the relationship between true volumetric particle composition and the composition estimates obtained by the measurement of linear intercepts or areas of simulated polished sections of particles. Based on this information, a transformation is developed between the areal measurements and the volumetric composition for this idealized mineral system. Molybdenite and chalcopyrite are two often-associated minerals. In Quebec, the Gaspe Copper Company, a subsidiary of the Noranda group, currently operates a molybdenite flotation circuit to recover a one percent trace of this mineral in the chalcopyrite concentrate. The low levels of molybdeni 2 preclude the use of flotation to remove molybdenum directly from the ore while scavenging of chalcopyrite concentrate for molybdenite yields a concentrate of the latter of somewhat inadequate quality. Such a situation could possibly best be solved by hydrometallurgical means, if molybdenite could be leached selectively from the chalcopyrite concentrate. Work in the field of extractive metallurgy was initiated about 22 years ago in the laboratory of the department of mining and metallurgy at Laval University, Quebec. Following a literature search, two objectives were selected. The present talk will outline some of the results obtained to-date and it is hoped the ensuing discussion of the paper can raise questions of immediate assistance to us for the future. First, as an immediate objective of-practical use, the oxidation rates for molybdenite and chalcopyrite in alkaline media would be studied under conditions of possible industrial application. Secondly, the kinetics of mass transfer of gases in pressure reactor are to be studied. Solubility data for various gases in aqueous solutions have been gathered by a few investigators, to mention the work of Pray1, Wadsworth2, Pawlek3 and Gerlach. Scattering in experimental results and discrepancies between authors are ominously present. Kinetics of mass transfer have somewhat been more neglected. A systematic investigation by the school of Berlin has greatly helped in the design of impeller most suitable for gas dispersion, without much reference however to the solid dispersing ability of the various designs. Variables affecting rates of gas transfer to the solution have not been studied. Studies on the aqueous oxidation of sulfide minerals are much more numerous. While molybdenite has been relatively less studied, work has been carried in two areas namely in alkaline oxidation of MoS2 , work performed by Dresher2 and Wadsworth, and in the hypochlorite leach of molybdenite by Bhappu4 and co-workers, These two methods showed appreciable rates of leaching for molybdenite. In general, comparisons between rates of oxidation of this sulfide with that for chalcopyrite have not been made.

Geologic mapping was undertaken in the Sierrita Mountains as part of a Doctoral program at the University of Arizona, Tucson. During the study, approximately 35 square miles was mapped in detail, with particular attention given to specific areas of great or significant structural complexity and their relation to mineralization in the vicinity. A combination, of field studies and photogeologic interpretation was used in order to define regional and local structural controls for disseminated copper-molybdenum mineralization in and adjacent to the study area.
