The Polish underground mining has its long lasting tradition. High production of coal, that has recently been approaching 200 milion tons per year, put this small country among the bigest world producers of coal. To achieve such a high production, which mainly originate from very unfavourable mining and geological conditions, Polish scientists and engineers have to introduce new and original solutions to the mining practice. Many of the solutions on mining methods, ventilation, stability, subsidence etc., have had the world wide reputation, however, insufficient translations from Polish cause , that many of the recent Polish mining achievements are not known to foreign specialists.

This study tests the ability of a new air nozzle system, located under the drill deck shroud, to improve the dust capture of the drill deck shroud. The system consists of three air nozzles supplied with regulated pressurized air and located midway down the shroud in the off-inlet corners of the shroud. Laboratory testing produced operating curves for the system that showed an optimum operating point of 207 kPa (30 psi) and generated respirable dust reductions of 48% to 52% from the drill deck shroud.

"The diversification of energy sources in the United States has seen some major shifts during the past decade resulting from:• A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques.• Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy.• The emergence of alternative energy sources proliferated as a result of state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs.Coal was once recognized as the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the United States for most of the last century, providing upward of 50 percent of the total generation capacity during much of that period. However, within the past decade, lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and alternative sources have steadily grown to now account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.West Virginia and Kentucky have not experienced the full breadth of the fuel shift, and, as of 2016, still obtained approximately 80-90 percent of electric power generation from coal. However, as coal plants are retired, there has been a shift toward natural gas for new power plants constructed in the region. The economics of power generation (i.e., lowcost fuel source) has typically been the major factor in determining shifts from one fuel source or technology to another. However, governmental energy policies and incentives have more recently been used to promote the development of new alternative technologies such as wind and solar energy growth to diversify the energy mix. The implementation of these incentives has provided some needed traction and resulted in driving the cost of manufacturing and installation of these new wind and solar systems downward to be more cost competitive with conventional fossil-fueled power sources. Future shifts in the generation capacity by fuel type will also be inevitable and impossible to project accurately as policies change and innovative technologies evolve. Determining factors may include the expiration of current incentives, decreasing capital costs, future environmental regulations, evolution of energy storage systems, technical challenges associated with increasing intermittent sources of generation and the development of unforeseen technologies. West Virginia and Kentucky have been among the least solar friendly states, ranking 44th and 48th of the 50 states (Fig. 1 for WV). This paper describes the grinding circuits installed at two remote sites in northern Canada. One is Cominco's Polaris Project at Little Cornwallis Island; a barge-mounted lead/zinc concentrator. The other is Echo Bay Mines' Lupin Project at Contwoyto Lake, 400 km northeast of Yellowknife, a gold mine, all components of which had to be flown to the site. Logistics and considerations of operating and maintenance presented challenges which were met by innovative design. The evolution of the grinding circuits is discussed. Both plants are operating at design throughput.

The mining industry is at a crossroads. Currently, there is an estimated $25 billion worth of projects around the world that have been stopped as the consequence of a dispute or disagreement with their communities, the government or some other stakeholder. Anglo American chief executive officer Mark Cutifani is one who sees the mining industry in need of change and on Dec. 12, he gave the keynote address for the launch the Kellogg Innovation Network?s Mining Company of the Future Initiative?s Development Partner Framework (DPF). The launch was held at the Ford Foundation building in New York City. The DPF seeks to inspire and support the mining industry to adopt a new way of thinking and a new approach to how it secures, nurtures and revitalizes its social license to operate. Working with a diverse group of people from faith-based organizations, nongovernmental organizations (NGO) and other stakeholders, Cutifani often had the rather uncomfortable position of representing the mining industry in a room full of people who are far from the industry?s biggest fans.

With the rapidly rising cost for electrical energy and the long range pre¬dictions for continued rising costs and even possible energy shortages, operation of rod, ball, autogenous and partial autogenous grinding circuits to efficiently utilize the power delivered to the mills will be demanded. This calls for a method to evaluate grinding circuit performance that is accurate, reliable and readily usable as an operating tool by supervisory, technical and operating personnel. Neither the Rittinger and Kick theories of comminution,(1) which preceded the Bond Theory by more than 50 years, had a mathematical means that could be used to predict and evaluate the performance of crushers and grinding mills used to comminute ores and rocks. This severly limited the practical use of these two theories, which were contradictory to each other. They have been superseded by the Bond Third Theory of Commnution.(1)

One of the critical challenges facing the mining industry ? and not just in the United States ? is the looming labor shortage. A significant percentage of the industry?s professional workforce is, well, getting old, and many will be retiring in the next 10 years or so. This is not a new issue to the industry. It has been discussed at various industry meetings and conferences for many years. How does mining, with its largely negative public image, attract young people to mining schools? And, equally important, who is going to teach them? Mining schools, what?s left of them in the United States, are beginning to lose qualified faculty to retirements, and no one is available to replace them. SME addressed this issue during the keynote session at its annual meeting in February in Denver, CO. This year?s theme was ?Mining: It?s About the People.? Despite a blizzard that blanketed the city on the day most attendees were to have arrived, the meeting still attracted a record 7,202 people. And the accompanying exhibit sold 822 booths, also a record. The U.S. Department of Energy?s National Energy Technology Laboratory contracted with the National Academies? National Research Council to complete a study concerning the availability of skilled workers to meet the energy and mineral security requirements for the United States. The National Research Council, in turn, asked SME to collect and analyze workforce trends in these industries. The result of SME?s analysis is the report ?Emerging Workforce Trends in the U.S. Energy and Minerals Industries.? It is available on the SME website, www.smenet.org. Click on Government Affairs. While the report did not paint a completely dismal picture, there were some disturbing results. It concluded that within 20 years there will not be a sufficient number of skilled professionals to satisfy the labor demand. That said, the report said that most of those positions would likely be filled. However, the U.S. mining will go through a period of time when the workforce will be made up of very young and senior workers.

Investors and other stakeholders are increasingly concerned about the quality and quantity of sustainability disclosures as well as the extent to which such disclosures correlate with sustainability practices of mining firms. This is because disclosure policies vary widely across firms in terms of extensiveness, materiality, and disclosed topic. In this paper, we conduct a preliminary examination of the relationship between sustainability performance and disclosure. We use sustainability performance indicators such as water and energy use and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board’s (SASB’s) standards to evaluate disclosures. Our preliminary results show that some measures of sustainability performance (energy use) are negatively correlated to the amount and quality of disclosures while others (water use) are not. Thus, investors should not judge sustainability performance based solely on the amount and quality of sustainability disclosures. In addition, our results suggest that firm size and ownership as well as institutional membership could impact the strength of correlations between disclosure policy and sustainability performance

In underground mining operations, the over- riding issue has to be protection of worker health and safety. The employees underground, making a living in a dangerous occupation, know these are major issues. These men bargain their lives and health on the presumption that the operating management knows its business, and they, the underground employees, can pursue their occupation with the assurance that management has provided a safe and healthy ambient underground environment. When management assumes the mantle of protection of underground workers, it has to be positive that qualified engineers have designed the project, and that capable operating personnel are in charge and always available. Those persons with these responsibilities must be knowledgeable in the engineering and occupational health aspects of sine ventilation. The ultimate function of a mine ventilation system is to provide a comfortable, healthy and safe ambient environment for the underground workers. The attainment of these objectives has been complicated with the increased application of electrical equipment and diesel-powered mechanized mining equipment underground (discharging toxic diesel emissions); increased production rates with the attendant increased production of airborne dust; and mine development in increasingly hostile mineral formations containing combustible strata gases, radon gas emissions, along with high heat and humidity. In general, the modern mechanization of present mining operations has resulted in a sore complex set of problems for the engineer planning the underground ambient environment.

Acid rain legislation as proposed by President Bush [1], if enacted, will immediately refocus current thinking on the economic decision-making as related to coal preparation facilities. Unit operations currently ignored because of their costs, will become mandatory to coal plant designers and operators to ensure maximum energy recovery and sulfur reduction in the entire coal stream. "With increasing demand for steel and depletion of high-grade iron ore deposits, more research efforts are being directed toward extending the life of existing ore reserves and developing technology to treat low-grade iron ore resources. Among all the reported technologies, biotechnologies in mineral processing – specifically bioleaching and microbially induced flotation – have emerged to be considered as low-cost, environmentally friendly potential alternatives to many of the current mineral processing techniques. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current research on the use of microorganisms for iron ore beneficiation and, further, discusses the applicability of bioleaching, bioflotation and bioflocculation for the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores.IntroductionIncreasing global demand for raw materials has led to diminishing resources of high-grade iron ore. As a result, the mining and utilization of low-grade hematite, limonite, specularite, siderite and goethite ores have attracted more and more attention. However, these types of iron ores are of complex paragenesis and fine disseminated grain size, and often contaminated by phosphorus in the form of solid solution. The distribution of phosphorus throughout the iron mineral crystals prevents the effective use of physical separation techniques, and these complex ores are at present largely untapped due to a lack of cost-effective and efficient processing methods. Chemical leaching and roasting-magnetic separation approaches have been mainly tested only on the laboratory scale and are all either cost prohibitive or ineffective when used on low-grade complex iron ores."

The stress of a coal seam is an important factor that affects the permeability of the coal seam and then affects the coalbed methane (CBM) drainage. In China, adjacent coal seam mining is an important method to reduce stress, which increases the permeability of the coal seam. However, in the process of mining adjacent coal seams, many coal pillars remain, which causes stress concentrations and results in a decrease in permeability. Therefore, it is important to study the influence of coal pillars on the stress of adjacent layers and its distribution and evolution in the floor rock. This paper took the Shendong Baode Coal Mine as a case study and investigated the influence of the coal pillar on the stress and permeability of coal seam #11. The results show that under a coal pillar, the relationship between the vertical stress of different floor depths and the width of the coal pillar can be divided into a negative correlation zone, transition zone, and positive correlation zone. The change in the coal pillar width does not affect the pressure relief range or the degree of pressure relief in the adjacent coal seams below the goaf. The field measurements show that after the mining of panel #81,505, the permeability coefficient of coal seam #11 under the goaf increased from 0.1434 to 26.3545 m2/( MPa2*d), increasing 182.7 times, and the drainage mixing volume of boreholes #1 and #2 increased from 1.24 to 1.52 m3/ min. While the permeability coefficient of coal seam #11 from 12.5 m in the coal pillar has only increased by 2.6 times, the drainage volume of boreholes #3 and #4 did not change significantly.

Rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals are increasingly becoming more important in our technological society and are used in many of our electronic devices (such as cell phones, computer monitors, wind turbines, etc.), batteries, and magnets. Measuring REE and critical minerals in ashed coal approximates the REE and critical minerals in the fly or bottom ash remaining after coal is burned at a power plant, where REE and other critical minerals could be leached. In New Mexico, there are 26 coal fields in Late Cretaceous rocks in the San Juan and Raton Basins. These rocks are being characterized as part of the DOE’s CORE-CM (Carbon Ore, Rare Earth, and Critical Minerals) program. Higher concentrations of REE (as much as 2103 ppm total REE) are found locally in ashed coals from the basins. More chemical and mineralogical analyses are required to fully understand the distribution and origin of REE in these deposits. As the demand for REE increases because of increased need and short supplies, the dollar value per ton of ore rises, enhancing deposit economics, perhaps even from coal.

In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. In the mining industry and particularly in the processing plants, we use some large and unusual equipment. Understanding what it is and what it does is important to good operations, but how do you teach a new employee. When I started out in this field, the information on the processing equipment was easy to come by. Equipment manufacturers readily supplied it; their salesmen, often engineers themselves, knew how important the availability of this information was. Old engineers used their notebooks to train the new engineers. Over time this has changed. Equipment manufacturers have changed hands or gone out of business, and often the older engineers are gone. As a start in reversing this, this presentation will be an introduction to sizing, selecting, and operation of some of this equipment, in particular gravity separating equipment. Major portions of this have been excerpted from A Mining Engineers Notebook: Mineral processing (2).

The measurement principle of the Coulter Counter for particle size analyses is described. The application of the Coulter Counter to cement particle content and size analysis and to the size distribution of clinker from standard grindability tests are described. Methods of calibration, sample preparation and data reduction are presented. The results of the analyses obtained are compared with characteristics associated with performance showing both concordance and non-concordance of test data., Future uses of the Coulter Counter for particle size analysis in research and plant control adaptations are indicated.

One of the critical parameters of any automated coal mining system is the ability to only cut coal and not the rock / waste surrounding it. To do this the system must be able to detect where the coal-rock/ waste interface is. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating a new approach to vibrational coal interface detection (CID) by utilizing an adaptive signal discrimination (ASD) system to perform feature extraction and classification of complex vibrational signals. Accelerometers, geophones, and piezoelectric films are mounted on mining machines and/or strata and are used to monitor vibrations produced during mining operations. Selected data are digitized and the ASD system is trained on known types of vibrations (e.g., "cutting coal" and "starting to cut roof"). A signal classifier is then generated which can be used to identify unknown waveforms. The ASD system can be retrained if mining conditions change significantly.

The American Concrete Institute defines "shotcrete" as "mortar or concrete conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity unto a surface." This definition thus includes what is traditionally known as "gunite," which is a pneumatically applied mortar. In mining practice, the term shotcrete is restricted to pneumatically applied concrete, and this differentiation will be used in this paper. In 1914, following the invention of the mortar gun in 1907, the then Chief Engineer of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, George Rice, developed the guntie process for underground test work at the bureau facility at Bruceton, Pennsylvania. After World War I, gunite was used extensively in American mines and was also utilized for underground civil works such as the San Jacinto Tunnel in California. The greatest development was In Europe where, as early as 1911, gunite was successfully used as an overlay for deteriorated tunnel linings. In 1951, the Swiss firm Aliva developed a pneumatic gun capable of handling coarse aggregate, thus making possible the first use of shotcrete at the Maggia hydropower development. Intially, shotcrete was used to reduce manpower requirements for forming; and placing conventional concrete. However, by 1954 Sonderegger was reporting that the structural advantages of shotcrete were derived from its flexibility and from the fact that it could be applied almost immediately niter the opening had been made. The incorporation of wire mesh into the shotcrete led to the New Austrian Tunnel Method, or NATM. The use of shotcrete in American mines has been implemented more recently. This delay seems to be due to previously unsuccessful experiences with gunite as a structural material and to the U.S. reliance on wood or steel supports in main line haulageways. The long experience with the apparently more substantial rigid supports led mine operators to be reluctant to the new and seemingly unrealistic lighter shotcrete support.

This paper presents considerations in support of a U. S. oil import policy more restrictive than the present Government import program. A lower level of imports and greater long-range stability in the relationship between imports and domestic production are recommended. Reference is made to increasing world-wide surpluses of oil and wide disparities in foreign vs. domestic costs. Resulting economic forces are held responsible for the increase in imports (excluding residual fuel oil) of almost 300 percent and the change in ratio to domestic crude production from 5.4 percent to 13.9 percent during the period 1946-1956 prior to import restrictions. It is pointed out that these imports continued to increase during the years of import restrictions to a ratio of 17.3 percent of domestic production in 1961. Data are presented showing that increasing oil markets outside the United States provide an outlet' for more than 80 percent of total foreign production, with 90 percent of the increase in foreign production going to foreign markets. Attention is called to the fact that, if there had been no increase in United States oil imports during the past five years, foreign production would have increased by 45 percent in contrast to a static level of domestic crude oil production. The need for a less restrictive import policy in the interest of encouraging foreign oil development, therefore, is questioned. Declines since 1956 in the range of 30 percent in domestic exploratory crews, rotary rig activity and wildcat well completions in the United States are cited, together with a decrease of 9 percent in industry employment and increases of 9 to 18 percent in elements of cost. Recognizing that factors other than imports affect the domestic industry, it is concluded that continuing declines in the vigor, capabilities and competitive structure of the domestic industry can be expected unless further import restrictions are imposed. The public interest in assuring adequate domestic supplies is considered in the light of the role of oil and gas as a source of almost three-fourths of U. S. energy requirements and the economic benefits from petroleum production with a value exceeding the combined value of all other minerals in the United States.

It is the opportunity for miners to reinvent their business models. Generating attractive new business cases with sustainability-oriented innovations meets investor and stakeholder expectations from the beginning. This contribution guides managers on their pathway towards sustainable success. Contextual sustainable business model patterns will be presented that can be adjusted individually, regardless of actor’s size. It will also point out, how sustainable value creation can be measured on business model level.
