If components of a gas-liquid stream react with each other and with stationary solids, involving parallel and sequential, reversible and irreversible, and slow and instantaneous reactions, the process can be defined by a set of simultaneous differential rate equations and simulated as multistage semibatch re¬actors. Each stage is divided into finite time increments. Within each increment, even the simultaneous reactions are treated as sequential. The proposed method follows process evolution from non-steady state startup to normal operating conditions. It allows computing byproduct buildup in recycles, tracer response curves and, in case of underground processes, expansion to adjacent parts of the deposit.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a ventilation assessment for a recently established underground room-and-pillar stone mine implementing split-mine ventilation. The primary objective was to examine the impact of the length of the in-place stone stoppings on face ventilation efficiency. These stone stoppings serve to separate the intake and exhaust entries and align with the mining direction. To achieve this, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling was utilized. The appropriate turbulence model was selected, and a mesh convergence analysis was conducted for the CFD model. Following that, the CFD model was validated using the conducted ventilation surveys. Two configurations of in-place stone stoppings, designated as Layout-I and Layout-II, were simulated using the validated CFD models. Layout-I featured a shorter in-place stone stopping, while Layout-II had a longer one. The results obtained from the CFD models demonstrated that the increased length of the in-place stone stopping in Layout-II resulted in a notable enhancement in ventilation efficiency at the advanced faces (last stopping), elevating it from 4% in Layout-I to 8.4% in Layout-II. However, no significant impact of the in-place stopping layouts was observed at other faces. In general, Layout-II exhibited a greater circulation of air at the outby stoppings.

To facilitate the installation of the longwall equipment for each extraction panel, West Elk mine develops set-up room roadways that are between 26.5 and 30.5 feet wide. Historically at the mine, the set-up room roadways have been driven in a single 20-foot-wide pass, then incrementally widened to the required width during installation of the longwall shields. The first pass roof is supported with a generic roof support plan consisting of partially encapsulated roof bolts and point-anchored cables. This ground support plan was utilized regardless of the geotechnical conditions encountered in the roadways or consideration of the required stand-up time of the roadway before the longwall shields were installed. This "blanket" approach tends to result in over-conservative or inappropriate roof support designs, particularly in changing geotechnical environments. Guided by the desire to optimize the ground support plans and increase mining efficiency for future set-up rooms, the West Elk mine and Agapito Associates, Inc. have developed and implemented a strata management program. Strata management, as a formal and structured process, allows ground support and mining methods to be tailored to the anticipated and encountered geotechnical environment in a con- trolled manner (Thomas 2007). To arrive at adequate site-specific ground support plans for the set-up rooms at the mine, several struc- tured processes were utilized. Firstly, the geotechnical environment was characterized by examining the roof lithology and geomechanical properties from nearby rock core obtained from exploration boreholes. To increase both mining efficiency and continuity, and to achieve longer stand-up times before the longwall shields are installed, a multi-pass approach was implemented into the design. During mining, the geotechnical conditions of the roadway are mapped, and the roof is strategically surveyed with a borescope. This process was used to ensure that the encountered ground behavior was in alignment with the design standards used for the roof support design. To support this process with measured data, roof extensometers were strategically installed throughout the roadway. This data was used to monitor the magnitude of roof displacement at various horizons and record displacement rates up until the longwall shields were installed. Lastly, a Trigger Action Response Plan (TARP) was used during mining to cater for any unforeseen changes in ground conditions that would warrant additional con- trols such as increased monitoring or the installation of additional ground support. This paper presents two case histories at the mine where the above strata management approach was implemented to arrive at a site-specific ground support plan. The main changes to the mine's ground control plan included a multi-pass mining approach, the utilization of fully encapsulated roof bolts, and the transition to a stiffer roof support system. The geotechnical mapping, the roof borescope results, and the roof extensometer data will be presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the ground support system up until the longwall shields were installed in both presented cases.

Economical dewatering of ultra-fine (minus 74 m) clean coal slurry produced in column flotation to a 20 percent or lower moisture level will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced fine coal cleaning processes. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of three dewatering techniques, namely, hyperbaric, vacuum and screen bowl centrifuge, in dewatering of ultra-fine (D50 -25 m) clean coal slurry produced by the 'Ken-Flote' columns operating at the Powell Mountain Coal Company, St. Charles, Virginia. he hyperbaric filter using 3 bar pressure and 1650 cake formation angle, provided a filter cake with 23.6 percent moisture with a throughput of 800 Kg/m2-h and air consumption of 868 Nm3/t (460 scfm/t). The vacuum filter with 30 percent submergence provided a filter cake with 27.8 percent moisture with a throughput of 122 Kg/m2-h. The screen bowl centrifuge provided a dewatered product containing 32.9 percent moisture at a feed rate of 450 Kg/hr, however, the solids capture was only 65 percent. Addition of 1 Kg/t of a cationic surfactant provided filter cakes with 19.1 percent, 23 percent, and 34 percent moisture using hyperbaric, vacuum, and centrifuge, respectively. Similarly, addition of 0.5 Kg/ton of copper chloride lowered filter cake moisture to 20.7 percent and 24.8 percent, using hyperbaric and vacuum. With the centrifuge no improvement in filter cake moisture was noted. However, use of 80 Kg/ton of 'orimulsion' in the centrifuge provided dewatered product containing 26 percent moisture, and the solids capture increased from 65 to 95 percent. The dewatered product appeared dry and was easily handleable.

This paper initially was to be on the design, construction and operation of the Lucky Friday mill. However, this subject has been pretty well covered in some of the mining publications in the past few years - specifically Mining Congress Journal for April, 1961 and Mining World for March, 1962- : In order to avoid too much repetition, we decided to present in this paper a comparison of the Lucky Friday mill constructed in 1959, and the Mayflower mill built by us in 1962. During the past three years Hecla Mining Company has constructed two relatively small mills: The Lucky Friday mill at Mullan, Idaho 750 T/day; and the Mayflower mill at Heber, Utah - 450 T/day. These mills were engineered, designed and constructed by Hecla, using principally our own personnel, with very little outside (contractor) labor employed. This paper presents a comparison of some of the interesting features of these mills, and where differences occur, it discusses the reasons for the various differences. It compares such points as the testing program, physical layout of the plant, construction costs, the grinding section, the flotation section, tailings disposal, metallurgy, recovery, grades, operating costs, etc. To help illustrate, and to compare these features, we will project pairs of slides showing each of the two mills. "The froth flotation process was patented by E.L. Sulman, H.F.K. Pickard, and John Ballot in 1906 . . . . . . . . . .James M. Hyde installed the first froth flotation process in the U.S., about August 1, 1911, at the Basin Reduction Co. plant, Basin, Montana . . . . . . . . . .By 1914, 42 mining companies were operating or experimenting with the flotation process . . . . . . . . . .The period 1930 to 1960 saw the application of flotation spread to nonsulphide ores and become the key factor in the economic production of many industrial minerals". So states FROTH FLOTATION, 50th Anniversary Volume, published by AIME in 1962. It is interesting, to observe that the Mines Branch, now part of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, was established in 1907 through an act of Parliament entitled, "The Nines and Geology Act". In 1911, a mineral dressing group was formed and a laboratory was constructed. By 1921, an engineer was devoting full time to industrial mineral processing problems.

The Grand Forks Energy Research Center and Commonwealth Edison of Chicago jointly conducted tests in which 400 tons each of subbituminous coal and lignite were dried in a commercial scale dryer, oil sprayed and cooled, then shipped in open-top rail cars from Pekin, IL to Grand Forks, ND and stockpiled. Cars containing raw coal and dried coal that had not been oil sprayed were also transported for comparative purposes. The tests were conducted in August and November of 1974. The subbituminous coal was dried from 26 to 16 pct moisture and the heating value was upgraded from 8,420 to 9,650 Btu/lb. The lignite was dried from 39 to 22 pct moisture and its heating value was increased from 6,420 to 8,300 Btu/lb. Before loading subbituminous coal was cooled to 115° F and sprayed with oil at a rate of from 2 to 6 gal/ton. Similarly, lignite was cooled to 85° F and oil sprayed at rates of from 1 to 2 gal/ton. Both shipments arrived in Grand Forks with a minimum of difficulty. The subbituminous coal was subjected to 2 inches of rain during transit with no change in average moisture content. The cars containing dried and oil treated coal had less material lost to wind than either cars containing raw or untreated dried coal. With both dried lignite and subbitnminous shipments, a moderate increase in temperature was measured during transit. With the subbituminous shipments, ignition occurred near poorly fitted bottom dump doors, but was limited to a very small area. The dried lignite was shipped when ambient temperatures were below freezing, and frozen coal was noted around the edge of the car. At Grand Forks, the coal was stockpiled using proven techniques and has remained stable to this date.

Peña Colorada is a company dedicated to the exploration, exploitation, and beneficiation of iron ore, serving the national steel industry. Established in 1975 as a stateowned enterprise, it transitioned to operating as a private organization in 1991. It is jointly owned by two investors, ArcelorMittal and Ternium, each holding a 50% stake. The mining operation is situated in the municipality of Minatitlan, in the northwestern part of the state of Colima, Mexico (Figure 1). It comprises an open pit mine and a concentrator, covering an area of approximately 2,300 hectares. The pellet mill is in the town of Manzanillo, Colima state, a port on the Pacific coast, about 46 km southwest of the mine. The pellet mill occupies its own property with a total area of 60.4 hectares. A gravity-driven concentrated slurry pipeline connects the mine and the pelletizing plant, located at an average elevation of 1,020 meters above sea level and 20 meters above sea level, respectively. Currently, Peña Colorada produces 4.1 million tons of pellets and 0.4 million tons of iron concentrate annually. In 2018, due to a change in the cutoff grade, the processing volume of the beneficiation plant increased from 9 million tons to 16 million tons annually. This led to a greater amount of information to process and characterize the ore extracted from the pit before its processing in the beneficiation plant. Consequently, Peña Colorada sought new ore control technologies to enhance ore selection, optimize human resources and data management, as well as minimize discrepancies between planning and execution. To ensure adherence to quality agreements with stakeholders, it is crucial to understand the ore characteristics before initiating mining activities.

The seismic refraction technique is probably the most popular geophysical method of bedrock profiling in geotechnical site investigations but is somewhat restricted by the inherent assumptions in the method. This paper describes how Hales' method of profile interpretation is modified to overcome the assumptions of increasing velocity and layer thickness with depth when only first arrival data is available. A further expansion of Hales method enables presentation of refraction data in a form whereby bedrock features, such as changes in velocity, relief and dip in particular, are more readily recognized. Characteristic curves of the more common bedrock features are presented as an aid to bedrock feature recognition.

One of the challenges of mining is the concentration of heavy metals it releases into the environment through a phenomenon called Acid Mine Drainage. Freiberg is no exception due to its long mining activities. The European Union proposes that all rivers and streams must be in a good ecological status by the year 2027 but this would be difficult for large water sources as it would be economically unviable. Consequently, the approach of treating these waters at point sources would be of immense help and hence this column experiment on mine water treatment with carbon sorbents to remove zinc form the Rothschönberger Stolln. For this experiment three resins namely, APTsorb, activated coke, charred fermentation residues (which was produced by the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology) were analyzed through a simple column experiment to determine their sorption capacities. Through their sorption capacity as this experiment seeks to ascertain: we are able to make suggestions scientifically on the best material among the three for the future design of a treatment plant for the RSS. After the experiment whereby a 10 ml peri glass column was used, material A: APTsorb showed the least adsorption capacity (0.01 meq/g) and this could be attributed to the fact that the resin works well under pre-determined parameters such as pH and surface area. Material B: Activated coke showed a better sorption capacity (0.53 meq/g) in comparison to the basis value used for this experiment. Material C: charred fermentation residue which was produced by the University showed the most efficient capacity of (1.69 meq/g). This in comparison with the value used as the basis for this experiment showed that material C (charred fermentation residue) is very efficient for zinc sorption. pH values measured at the effluent of all the experiment were slightly higher than the pH measured in the initiating water.

This paper describes development of a cost report that is descriptive, logically oriented, and concise. Since the costs involved relate to mining, this reporting technique could help bridge any possible communications gap between "mining men" and computer personnel, at the same time giving the computer-oriented mining individual information to assist him in his job performance. As computers become entrenched in the mining world, meaningful report assimilation becomes a major task. No one should be more capable of defining required results than the man requesting a report. If he is able to clearly state his needs and has researched his problem, it will be reflected in the computer output. During 1970, The Anaconda Company's Berkeley Pit Operation, at Butte, Montana, received many different computer-generated equipment cost reports. Up to thirty-six different components for each type (class) of pit equipment contributed cost data to the Berkeley Pit cost system files for both operating and repairs during current month, year-to-date and accumulation-to-date time periods. This reporting approach was taken to facilitate analyzing this voluminous data. SUMMARY A Major Component Cost Analysis (Exhibits 6-A thru 6-C) developed by arranging the top ten operating and repair percentages (component cost divided by total cost) in descending order, and then accumulating these percentages to a possible one-hundred percent. The use of high-efficiency electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) for large scale, open pit mine dewatering operations provides a good example of how technology, products and services from the oil and gas industry can be adapted to the mining industry. In this case, the mine is Goldcorp?s Peñasquito in the Zacatecas state of Mexico, at the Peñasco and Chile Colorado open pit deposits. The technology, products and services are from Schlumberger artificial lift (AL) and Schlumberger industrial water services (IWS). Overview of high-efficiency ESPs This section provides a brief description of the basic components, specifications and operating capacity ranges for the ESPs compared with traditional or conventional dewatering well pumps. This information helps to establish how ESPs provide certain functional and economic advantages over conventional pumps in a mine dewatering application. A schematic of a high-efficiency ESP in an oil and gas (O&G) application is shown in Fig. 1.

The Sales Comparison Approach to estimating the value of a mineral property must always be attempted1 . In addition to other parameters, the approach depends heavily on the availability of transaction data. The consideration for the mineral property must be in form of cash, cash equivalent or other consideration. In other words, “What dollar amount did the property sell for?” Mineral properties are generally real estate, albeit frequently buried deeply under the overlying surface real estate, unless the property may be a quarry. In some states, transactions must be recorded in county courthouses, and the sale consideration must be included. In such cases, the appraiser’s job is made easy. In other locations, the sale considerations are withheld in the courthouse data; but occasionally a local transfer tax is collected and recorded. Again, the appraiser’s job is made easy by back calculation with knowledge of the legislated transfer tax percentage. The worst problem occurs when the consideration for a mineral real estate sale is totally withheld. That may occur in so-called nondisclosure states. An effective maintenance program ensures the adequate availability of production equipment. In turn, this availability enables production to maximize utilization and successfully meet production targets. An overall production strategy is necessary to draw all departments toward this common effort. Only then will production targets be met. From the maintenance view this means that production must comply with PM and repair schedules. Purchasing must supply parts and materials on time. Mine engineering must not overwhelm maintenance with non-vital construction. Accounting must provide correct, timely cost information - - etc. This strategy - - its content, effectiveness and enforcement is the responsibility of the mine manager . . . his alone. This paper describes a successful approach to maintenance within this strategy.

The United States has abundant coal resources that could last at least another century. and probably longer at present consumption rates. Geographically, the coal resources are distributed over the entire nation including Alaska, although there are no coal deposits in the highly populated areas on the two coasts. This allows free access to the coal, but makes transportation more expensive. Not all coals can be utilized equally because they differ vastly in quality. The sulfur content of coals, considered as the most detrimental acid rain-causing element, varies from as low as 0.3 percent in some areas of the western U.S. to 5 percent or more in parts of the Midwest. The chlorine content, which causes corrosion of plant hardware, also varies regionally. The 1990 amendments of the Clean Air Act of 1963 (CAA) require that emissions of sulfur be restricted and rolled back in two stages by the year 2000. There have been a number of reports expressing concern about the future of the industry in the states where high sulfur coal is produced. The remedies devised by the federal government and many coal-producing states in the past to "se-cure" the future of the regional coal industries have focused on the physical task of removing sulfur rather than the economic challenge of doing so at a cost that will enable high-sulfur coals to survive and compete. The past remedies, generally, were not specific enough to account for the characteristics of regional coal deposits and did not look at the coal market as an integrated national and international entity. The State of Illinois has, in recent years, taken a more comprehensive approach to the solution of the problem.

Background of Erie Mining Company Erie Mining Company, managed by Pickands Mather & Co., is one of the largest producers of iron ore pellets in the United States. The plant is located at Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota, sixty-five miles north of Duluth on the eastern end of the Mesabi Range. Taconite Harbor, situated on the north shore of Lake Superior, is the location of its Power Plant and shipping facilities. (Figure 1) Even though the plant commenced operation in September, 1957, its true be-ginning can be traced back to 1931 when Pickands Mather, in conjunction with Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, began investi-gating the possibilities of processing low grade ores. In 1940, Erie Mining , Company was formed. During the early and middle 1940's, laboratory and pilot plant research was proven to a point where a preliminary plant was deemed feasible and built in 1948. This plant had an annual capacity of 203,200 t (200,000 long tons) per year and, until mid-1952, was the only taconite plant in existence using commercial-size equipment. During this period, ownership of Erie Mining Company was expanded to include Interlake, Inc. and The Steel Company of Canada, Limited. In 1953, authorization was obtained from the owners to build a 7.62 M t (7.5 M long tons) per year plant at a cost in excess of $300,000,000.

In this paper, an innovative approach was adopted to automatically calculate the effects of tunnel induced settlement on buildings and utilities. The approach resulted in increased output quality, consistency, reduced time, cost savings and a greater ability to respond quickly to design changes. The techniques described have been applied to the Fairbank Silverthorn Storm Trunk Sewer System project, located within the City of Toronto. The automation allowed a very large area of topography, tunnels (6 km), buildings (9000) and utilities (over 1000) to be rapidly evaluated. Visualization of the settlements and impacts also allowed the project design team to optimize the system design to mitigate the settlement impacts.

This study investigates the changes in seismic velocity of rockmass before and after three major seismic events to determine any potential identifiable precursory velocity changes associated with these events. Induced stress measurement is one of the challenging tasks in deep underground mining, with extreme impacts on the safety and stability of the mine. This study used p-wave passive seismic tomography to image the velocity redistribution within a rockmass, which can indicate induced stress level changes in the rockmass and detect the velocity changes that might precede a major seismic event or a rockburst. The ultimate goal of this research focus is to develop another tool for the deep-mining community that will help to increase safety and efficiency. For this purpose, the hypothesis of conventional mechanics, which implies induced stress at the hypocenter (as inferred by the p-wave velocity) increases until the seismic event occurs, is evaluated. It is found that the p-wave velocity did not increase at any of the three hypocenters prior to the seismic event occurring; however, the p-wave velocity did increase in the closest “zone center” for two of the three events.

Bong Mining Company/Liberia provides the rare opportunity to compare two generations of grate kiln pelletizing plants operating on the same magnetite/hematite ore basis. In this paper advantages and drawbacks are compared: mechanical aspects, energy-savings, pellet quality. Plant I with up- and down-draft drying gas flow. Plant II runs only on down draft drying and incorporates a heat-recoup system. Ferteco Mineracao/Brazil operates a Lurgi straight grate plant since 1977 on hematitic pelletfeed. Energy-political situation and char- coal as energy source in Brazil are reflected also in the search for alternative fuels for pelletizing. First measures and results are reported as well as intended further steps towards a 100 % oil replacement.

"This study focuses on partial leaching of coal pyrite with sodium sulfite in order to increase its degree of liberation from the coal matrix, which might help to increase the removal of coal pyrite, together with trace elements of arsenic (As), selenium (Se) and mercury (Hg) by froth flotation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines’ two-stage reverse flotation process was applied to further reject coal pyrite in the second stage, where pyrite was floated while coal was depressed. The results show that the leached coal flotation with sodium sulfite produced lower pyritic sulfur content in the clean coal by approximately 25% compared to the flotation of unleached coal. The synergism mechanism between the leaching and the two-stage flotation is delineated. The rejection of trace elements (As, Hg and Se) after the two-stage flotation process with unleached coal followed approximately that of pyritic sulfur (64.6%). However, after the two-stage flotation with leached coal, the rejection of Se was as high as that of pyritic sulfur (77.9%), while the rejections of As and Hg were 20% lower than that of pyritic sulfur, or followed approximately the same rejections obtained through the two-stage flotation with unleached coal.IntroductionSO2 is a reducing reagent, but when it is combined with oxygen in an acidic solution, it will become a strong oxidizing reagent for leaching coal pyrite. Sundaram et al. (2001) found that the reagent could leach coal pyrite to produce ferric iron, which, in turn, catalyzed the oxidation of SO2. Similarly, Cho et al. (2009) found that the reagent could leach pyrite as well as mercury from coal. In the present study, coal was preconditioned by partially leaching coal pyrite in water-coal slurry with sodium sulfite at 48° C. The partial leaching of coal pyrite may enhance its degree of liberation from the coal matrix and give a chance to be rejected more effectively during the flotation.The two-stage U.S. Bureau of Mines’ reverse flotation process (Miller, 1975) was used in this study. The first stage is conventional flotation, in which coal is floated while material with higher ash and pyrite content remains in the cell. Kerosene is used as a promoter to float the coal and MIBC (methyl isobutyl carbinol) is used as a frother. In the second stage, the floated coal from the first stage is depressed using a starch-based reagent, while coal pyrite is floated using potassium amyl xanthate. In this second stage, the liberation of coal pyrite from the coal matrix seems to be an important factor for successful rejection of coal pyrite."
