Coal mined-out areas have a significant impact on mining safety and affect the pressure distributions of neighboring coal faces. The PFC3D software is used to study the goaf mechanical characteristics, and the core loading test verifies the rationality of the numerical simulation method. The results from the numerical modeling showed that the void ratio, particle size ratio, and particle size distribution of the rock particle sample (RPS) had a significantly remarkable influence on the compression deformation characteristics of the rock block. The parallel-bond tensile strength and parallel-bond cohesion had a notable impact on the compression deformation traits of the rock block only when the axial stress level was lower than 12 MPa. By contrast, when the axial stress exceeded 5 MPa, the effective modulus significantly influenced the compression deformation features. However, the stiffness ratio, loading rate, and parallel-bond friction angle had almost no effect on the compression deformation characteristics. Furthermore, when the stress level was less than 10 MPa, the stress–strain curves from the rock core samples’ numerical simulation and loading tests were approximately linear. In addition, the Pearson correlation coefficients of the stress–strain curves suggest that the goaf zone’s core numerical simulation results had a robust correlation with the loading test results. The findings of this study can serve as a reference for the field application of PFC3D software and safety assessments in goaves.

Throughout the mining industry, pneumoconiosis is one of the most severe occupational health problems being faced. The goal of completely eliminating pneumoconiosis as an occupational health hazard was underscored by the Federal Government with its enactment of Public Law 91-173 (Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969). Under this law, permissible dust level standards will be placed at 2 mg/m3 in mine atmospheres by December 30, 1972. The mining industry is thus faced with the tremendous technical challenge of achieving this level. Two basic questions can be raised with regard to this legislation. First, does a maximum dust concentration of 2 mg/m3 prevent the occurrence of pneumoconiosis? Secondly, can this dust standard be achieved using presently available methods and equipment? A precise answer to the first question has not yet been developed by the medical profession. Studies are continuing on the origin, prevention, and therapy of pneumoconiosis, and permissible dust levels could become even lower as medical evidence accumulates. "INTRODUCTION Outer space technology and exploration have reached a tipping point so that mining and mineral processing in outer space is now a certainty and not a dream. Several competing companies, worldwide, are well on the way to building spaceships to land on the Moon and eventually mine the Moon and asteroids for volatiles, rare earth metals and Helium-3. The Google Lunar XPrize offers a $30 million prize1. China has recently landed a spacecraft on the Moon. The European Space Agency, with cooperation from the United States, has landed a spacecraft, Philae, on a comet. And, Mars One is planning a one-way trip to establish a settlement of humans on Mars. How and why are the Moon and asteroids and their resources of interest to private space industry and companies? Why are the Moon and asteroids viewed as a potential business venue? GEOLOGY OF THE MOON AND ASTEROIDS –WHY DO WE WANT TO MINE THERE? Space enterprises are actively working towards establishing and operating lunar and asteroid mining locations for resource extraction, resource processing, conversion to salable products, and distribution of the products and services in space and to Earth and beyond2. Forty-five years ago, the Apollo manned missions to the Moon returned rocks and regolith to Earth, which were studied and analyzed. What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water, and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind. The Moon regolith contains valuable rare earth minerals, platinum-group minerals (particularly where the Moon has been impacted by asteroids), volatiles (useful for processing and habitation), Helium-3 and titanium. Almost non-existent on earth, Helium-3 is abundant and accessible on the Moon and can be used in nuclear fusion power plants, producing much more energy than fission reactions and with much less radioactive waste. One of the main reasons Helium-3 is sought after as a fusion fuel is because there are no neutrons generated as a reaction product. Governments and private companies focus on mining of Helium-3 on the Moon as a basis for their economic models. Moon Express, one of the private companies who is planning on mining on the Moon, will recover moon rocks to fund its early operations25. Subsequently, it will recover Helium-3, platinum, and rare earth metals, as it engages in surface mining operations."

In 2009, the Gold Quarry openpit mine experienced multiple large-scale slope failures of the upper east highwall that reduced gold ore extraction for nearly 18 months. The slope failures occurred within a weak, consolidated sedimentary sequence that exhibits strength characteristics that are transitional between soil and rock. Instability initiated as mining exposed the lower, high plasticity subunits of the Carlin Formation. This deformation created preferential flow paths that allowed ground water from the upper sandy subunits to infiltrate low-permeability, clay-rich subunits, thereby enhancing deformation of the slope toe, which, in turn, destabilized the upper portion of the highwall. The outcome was a 160 m high slope failure that had a lateral run-out of 850 m. The effort to return the pit to ore production required geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations and the preliminary remediation mining activity to be concurrent. This required the development of detailed safety procedures and a requirement to modify the remediation design as new results were obtained. An initial challenge was to mitigate a near vertical, 90 m headscarp with localized, blast-induced slope failures. Back-analyses with numerical modeling software indicated that the failure surface could be shallower, which contradicted the initial failure interpretations. Eventually, drilling results confirmed this alternative failure geometry. The final remediation design incorporated shallower slope geometries and an approximately 3 Mt buttress along the base of the Carlin Formation and bedrock contact to reinforce the subunits with residual strength properties. The results are a stable highwall within the Carlin Formation following nearly 10 years of repeated slope failures, and an example of the necessity to conduct appropriate geotechnical and hydrogeological studies during the early stages of a new layback evaluation or new openpit development.

A tube bundle system (TBS) is a mechanical system for continuously drawing gas samples through tubes from multiple monitoring points located in an underground coal mine. The gas samples are drawn via vacuum pump to the surface and are typically analyzed for oxygen, methane, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Results of the gas analyses are displayed and recorded for further analysis. Trends in the composition of the mine atmosphere, such as increasing methane or carbon monoxide concentration, can be detected early, permitting rapid intervention that prevents problems, such as a potentially explosive atmosphere behind seals, fie or spontaneous combustion. TBS is a well-developed technology and has been used in coal mines around the world for more than 50 years. most longwall coal mines in australia deploy a TBS, usually with 30 to 40 monitoring points as part of their atmospheric monitoring. The primary uses of a TBS are detecting spontaneous combustion and maintaining sealed areas inert. The TBS might also provide mine atmosphere gas composition data after a catastrophe occurs in an underground mine, if the sampling tubes are not damaged. TBSs are not an alternative to statutory gas and ventilation airflowmonitoring by electronic sensors or people; rather, they are an option to consider in an overall mine atmosphere monitoring strategy. This paper describes the hardware, software and operation of a TBS and presents one example of typical data from a longwall coal mine.

A majority of continuous mining machines employ a water spray system and a machine-mounted flooded-bed scrubber to suppress and capture dust during coal mining. These machine-mounted dust control systems must be designed to function within the localized face ventilation system at the mining section to control both dust and methane. Spray systems can impede or improve the scrubber effectiveness in controlling dust or methane at the mining face. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of spray type, spray pressure, machine body blocking sprays and scrubber airflow on dust and gas levels, while using a 12.2-m (40-ft) exhaust ventilation curtain setback from the face. These experiments were conducted with the mining machine positioned at the end of a simulated 6.1-m (20-ft) sump and slab cut. Results indicate that the hollow cone nozzles with blocking sprays best complement the flooded-bed scrubber performance in an exhaust ventilation system. This external spray system notably reduced dust and gas levels on the off-curtain side of the mining machine for both the sump and slab cut compared to the flat spray nozzles. Higher scrubber airflows reduced dust and gas levels on the curtain side and in the return of the continuous mining machine. The remote operator position, located on the off-curtain side and parallel to the inlet end of the exhaust curtain, sustained the most stable and lowest dust levels around the mining machine.

As 1979 drew to a close, it was obvious that China would have another good year with output of most industrial products at 3-9% above levels attained in 1978. Most increases were registered on the basis of maximum utilization of existing capacities and nationalization of procedures and methods. There were also distinct improvements in the quality and variety of products. Coal output probably surpassed the 650-Mt level in 1979. Steel output was expected to reach the 35-Mt level, an increase of nearly 10% over 1978. Based on the vast amount of housing and road and project construction, cement production more than likely surpassed 70 Mt. The nonferrous base metal industries improved somewhat in 1978, but actual output levels in recent years may have been a little higher than previously estimated by the outside world. Stagnate world demand slowed growth in the "export metals" sector. Minerals like magnesite and talc were produced at tonnages much larger than previously thought, with gold also falling into this category. Sulfur and pyrite production are still short, although a big pyrite mine was being brought into production. Barite out-put was reportedly up and fluorspar output held its own. Westerners generally concede that difficulties in transportation and power supply are holding back mineral production. Throughout 1979, basic construction continued on the majority of projects started by the Chinese and those few foreign projects contracted before the adjustment of industrial priorities. Foreign Ventures Perspective The foreign connection looms large in China's plan for modernization. In effect, it is an extension of what China wants to do in terms of "walking on two legs"-that is, develop what can be done locally to the fullest extent, then rely on international technology to move into the bigger and more complicated projects. Foreign projects are designed to complement domestic projects rather than replace them. Many foreign projects were started or continued by the Chinese in 1979. Building the necessary infrastructure for the projects is usually a Chinese endeavor and requires Chinese technicians and money. In areas with a strong economic base, this activity proceeds without foreign aid. In other areas, added funds are requested. Foreign funds can come in many forms-equipment technology, low interest loans, equity capital, advance-of-funds on the basis of future delivery in kind, and joint venture money. The Chinese are exploring all these avenues, with the strategy of minimizing foreign exchange needs for individual projects. They feel very uncomfortable with high interest rates, even though interest can be treated as operating ex¬pense rather than capital expense. Then there's the question of rights. This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2013 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analyses of exploration activities performed by the mineral industry. Three sources of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2013: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. nominal dollars provided by SNL Metals & Mining (SNL) of Halifax, NS, Canada (formerly Metals Economics Group (MEG); 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2013 as compiled by the USGS; and 3) regional events that affected exploration activities, including economic, social and political conditions, that were derived from published sources and unpublished discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources are used to develop commodity and regional compilations, reported statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported. The SNL data summarize planned company budgets for worldwide exploration activities in 2013 for 20 nonfuel mineral commodities based on surveys returned by companies primarily focused on precious metals (gold, platinum-group metals and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (coal, iron ore, phosphate and potash), and specialty commodities (diamond, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements, tantalum and uranium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in the MEG overview for the first time in 2007. MEG included data on the commodities lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, rare-earth elements and tantalum for the first time in 2010 because of the increased topical significance of these commodities. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the MEG and SNL compilations. SNL budget estimates exclude aluminum, coal, and oil and gas. Budget estimates for iron ore have been compiled since 2011 but reported separately. The post-1999 budget surveys by MEG and SNL cover at least 90 percent of world?s reported nonferrous, nonfuel mineral exploration budgets; the 2013 survey is reported by SNL to cover an estimated 95 percent of these budgets. The 5 percent that is not covered is accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities.

"Coal is mainly composed of energy-producing elements carbon and hydrogen. In addition to these elements, coal usually contains many other valuable elements, including iron, aluminum, silicon, rare earth elements, lithium, gallium, germanium, vanadium, uranium, titanium, scandium and phosphorus. These coalassociated elements are significantly enriched in coal combustion byproduct fly ash because the majority of the main components, carbon and hydrogen elements, being removed. Table 1 provides the chemical composition range of the main element oxides in 12 Chinese fly ash samples collected from coal power plants located in Northeast China, Northwest China, Southwest China and Southeast China. It can be seen from Table 1 that the major mineral components of different ashes are similar, but the bulk chemistry of different fly ashes may vary due to the changes of ratios of the mineral components in different coals. The major mineral components in various Chinese coal combustion fly ash are silicates, iron oxides and unburned carbon.Chinese coal fly ash usually contains about 5 to 15 percent of unburned carbon, which are generally chars with irregular shapes and wide particle size distribution. In addition to unburned carbon, XRD analysis of four Chinese fly ash samples from Liaoning, Shanxi, Guizhou and Shandong provinces indicates that the fly ash samples are composed of minerals such as quartz (SiO2), mullite (3Al2O3.2SiO2 or 2Al2O3.SiO2), hematite (Fe2O3), maghemite (gamma form of hematite, ?-Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4). The mullite and quartz particles are usually present as spherical particles because they are formed by melting clays, feldspars, quartz, calcite and other common minerals in coal during coal combustion. The silicate particles have usually entrapped gas to yield hollow spherical particles because their lower melting point facilitates gas entrapment.The iron oxides are usually spherical also. The magnetite (Fe3O4) is derived from pyrite (FeS2), hematite (Fe2O3), siderite (FeCO3) and limonite (2Fe2O3.3H2O) in the coal. Maghemite (?-Fe2O3) is formed by dehydration of the mineral hydrohematite (?-FeO(OH)) and/or oxidation of magnetite (Fe3O4) during coal combustion. Maghemite (?-Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4) are strongly magnetic, so they are recovered from Chinese coal fly ash and widely used for coal processing in China (Fan et al., 2005, 2000)."

Event cameras are used for their performance in high dynamic-range lighting conditions which are canonical to active mining environments. Direct labeling of event-based image data to train a model to perform semantic segmentation using traditional methods is slow and error-prone. This study proposes a framework to use roughly hand-labeled color images from a mine as an input to an intermediary probabilistic algorithm called alphamatting to generate a ground-truth data set. These high-fidelity labels can be used to train a semantic segmentation model to differentiate the support strap from the roof. This model can then be leveraged to segment an event-based scene to enable autonomous roof bolting. This pipeline has been shown to achieve an accuracy of 88% with a false positive rate of 3%.

The intent of geomorphic landform design is to mimic the function of the natural landscape. In a surface mine reclamation application, geomorphic landform design has the potential to mitigate stream loss. This research quantified features of reference landforms and performed computer modeling of a conceptual valley-fill design using geomorphic landform principles. A design was created using published design parameters with a software design tool (Carlson Natural Regrade with GeoFluv). Three additional designs, incorporating field-obtained regional geomorphic landform parameters, were completed and resulted in a geomorphic landform design specific to southern West Virginia. This work illustrates the importance of field determination of the ridge to head-of-channel input and drainage density parameters. Values of ridge to head-of-channel distance measured in this study were consistently an order of magnitude greater than software recommended values (SRV); SRV = 24 m (80 ft) versus field= 220 m (720 ft). Similarly, for the drainage density parameter, the software recommended range is 6 to 9 km-1 (80-120 ft/ac). The field measurements for central Appalachia quantified the drainage density to range from 5 to 5.3 km-1 (67-70 ft/ac). This affects Appalachian valley-fill stream construction by making the stream lengths shorter and the land slopes steeper with straighter headwater channels compared with areas in the southwestern United States. While the application of geomorphic landform design to surface mine sites presents challenges, this work provides support for future applications.

An important problem in mine operations is the classification of material as waste, low-grade stockpile, and ore. This classification must often be made with blasthole data that are widely spaced and that have sampling errors. Geo-statistical simulation techniques combined with basic economic principles allows a procedure for classification that maximizes expected profit. Geostatistical simulation methods (Gaussian, indicator, or annealing-based) allow the integration of hard and soft data in the creation of alternative, equally-probable, realizations of the mineral grade(s). At each location, for each realization, we calculate the "profit" if the block were to be classified as ore or waste The optimal classification is the one that maximizes expected profit (a Maximum Profit Se-lection (MPS) procedure). We discuss the theoretical justification of the method and implementation details. The use of blasthole data from different types of mineral deposits, that is, different levels of continuity, is considered. We also show the efficacy of the procedure with different levels of sampling error. The increased revenue due to the MPS procedure and improved sampling is shown. We show the geostatistical simulation procedure and the uncertainty in block grades that result from incomplete and imperfect sampling. The optimal classification is presented. Optimal block classifications are transferred to realizable dig-limits by hand-drawing polygonal boundaries. We compare the results of the proposed method to classification based on kriging. Limitations and areas of future work are identified.

A custom-designed shotcrete system, consisting of an 8-m3 (10-yd3) transit mixer and a shotcrete spray boom carrier, is used bya 2-man crew to transport and place up to 25 m3 (32 yd3) of steel-fiber reinforced, dry, silica fume shotcrete per II-hour shift. Shotcrete is custom blended by a local supplier and delivered predampened. Mix design and quality control is performed with a computer program that develops and graphs a properly balanced mix based upon the materials sieve analyses.

A methodology that is effective creates a corporate environment for alignment to be possible and then transforms operations by embedding the necessary behaviors, processes and practices. The people within the organization then are empowered to find and to implement solutions quickly, as measured business results demonstrate in case histories of diverse mining challenges around the globe and over the decades.Urgent case for actionThe physics of mining does not change fundamentally over time, but the context in which it operates changes rapidly, periodically requiring a new face of mining. “The New Face of Mining,” which has been used as a metaphor for the campus-wide mineral resources research organization at the University of Arizona, has many facets, including societal, generational, technological, financial and environmental, but at the center, always, is humanity. The New Face of Mining is not necessarily about age, it is about people first imagining and then creating a new future for mining. The challenges facing the global industry evolve from year to year and differ in individual companies or mines at any one time.Quantified outcomes from case studies indicate that a methodology, now also offered annually in a four-day, open-enrollment leadership program tailored to the mining industry, is effective at generating breakthrough results in the mining business. Such challenges range from those with important technical components to others that are mostly social challenges. Our focus, however, is the centrality of people in aligning on and enacting the future of mining. We use the phrase New Face of Mining for leadership and ways to empower people in organizations that commonly are overlooked in the mining industry. Some of the material in this article is based on the ideas of Werner Erhard and on the book by Steve Zaffron and Dave Logan (2009), The Three Laws of Performance: Rewriting the Future of Your Organization and Your Life.At Davos, Switzerland in January 1992, nine visionary mining chief executive officers (CEO) gathered to create the Global Mining Initiative. Much has changed in the 26 years since that meeting:• The world GDP has increased from US$25.4 trillion to $75.8 trillion.• The annual number of U.S. patent applications increased from 186,000 to 629,000.• The number of websites has increased from 100 to 1 billion.• The number of academic references to artificial intelligence has climbed from more than 16,000 to more than 1 million.• The number of cell phone subscribers grew from 11 million in the United States to four billion globally."

"Electric and hydraulic shovels are the dominant loading machinery in surface mining operations. Despite their critical role in production and their high capital and operating costs, no reliable and comprehensive quantitative performance metric is available. In this paper, a stochastic shovel effectiveness (SSE) measure is proposed for the purpose of quantifying the performance effectiveness of these shovels. The SSE is based on the widely used method of overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) in the manufacturing industry. The OEE measures the performance effectiveness of equipment by multiplying its mechanical availability, utilization and production quality. In manufacturing processes, quality rate is the ratio of the total number of products minus the number of defective products – equivalent to the number of acceptable products – to the total number of products. The SSE similarly uses the mechanical-availability and utilization terms, but instead of quality rate it uses a new parameter named bucket rate.The variability or randomness of the input data, that is, availability, utilization and bucket rate, are further incorporated into the SSE, and a final stochastic SSE distribution is derived in the form of a probability density function. One hydraulic and one electric shovel in a surface mining operation were selected to test the validity of the proposed method. The SSE scores for the two shovels, operating continuously for one year, were derived and compared. As with the OEE, the three-parameter SSE method yielded more representative results for overall performance measurement than a single-parameter approach. Using Monte Carlo simulation, a three-parameter Weibull and a normal distribution were derived for quantifying the overall effectiveness of hydraulic and electric shovels, respectively. As a decision aid, the proposed methodology promises to render a more informative tool than traditional metrics for mine equipment maintenance and management."

Allis-Chalmers has combined a new heat transfer device, called the ROLLER GRATE, with a unique processing scheme, resulting in the ROLLER GRATE Oil Shale Processing System of Allis-Chalmers. In order to test both the process and the equipment, a batch Process Development Unit (PDU) ROLLER GRATE retort was designed and built. This unit vas designed with the flexibility to process shale over a wide range of test conditions in order to demonstrate the attributes of the oil-shale processing system. Instrumentation on the PDU and extensive sampling of the effluent streams permitted the PDU test data to be used in the design and scale-up of the process. Over 30 tests have been conducted with Colorado shale, and over 25 tests have been run with an Indiana shale. In addition, rests have been run with California and Utah tar sands.

INTRODUCTION Heat stress continues to be a safety concern in underground mining. This is due to a number of reasons including increasing depths of mining, increased levels of heat generated from machines, ventilation systems being constrained from providing suitable levels of airflow and others. In order to assess if a thermal environment is safe for miners under normal or modified work arrangements, or to specify stop work conditions a heat stress index is used to guide decisions. Historically, a number of heat stress indices have been developed and applied in underground mines. These can be classed under three broad headings; single measurement, empirically based and rational indices. Do any of these indices perform better than the others? Which one allows simple determinations and decisions to be made in the mine? This paper aims to provide answers to these questions by comparing and contrasting three indices; effective temperature (ET), simple air cooling power (ACP) and Thermal work limit (TWL) for a range of typical mining wet and dry bulb combinations? The paper concludes with the identification of areas for future research. BACKGROUND Heat stress causes discomfort, increases physiological strain, decreases productivity and performance, and contributes to increased incidents [1]. Effective management and control of heat stress is particularly important in mining where hot working conditions are very common [2]. Heat stress index is a common indicator that is used by mine safety advisors and managers to guide decisions about safe work practices in mining under normal or modified conditions. According to Howes and Nixon [3] A safe heat stress control strategy for an underground mine has three elements: • Application of an environmental measure which reflects physiological strain with sufficient accuracy for the range of conditions encountered underground. • Acceptance of a functional relationship between the environmental measure and human performance which is used to optimise the environmental conditions achievable with either ventilation or ventilation and refrigeration. • A management control strategy based on the environmental measure which is designed to ensure that work in environments where excessive physiological strain may occur is prevented and corrective action is initiated. The link between these elements is an environmental measure that reflects the physiological strain a worker is subjected to. Since the turn of the twentieth century various indices of thermal stress have been developed (McPherson [4], Howes and Nixon [3], Brake [5]). In selecting a suitable environmental measure or index one problem that must be addressed is the ease with which it can be physically obtained relative to it accurately reflecting the physiological strain. No index can be universally applied and there is no single correct measure or index. However if an index has provided adequate control in a particular circumstance, then it can be regarded as correct for that situation.

Due to the unbalanced top coal drawing process, the recovery ratio is low, and the equipment stability is poor in the longwall top coal caving mining (LTCC) with an inclined seam. Aimed at these problems, this paper proposes the dynamic group caving method (DGCM). The basic procedure is that when the drawn volume of top coal from a support reaches about half, the next support begins drawing top coal, and the drawing process between the two supports is half done. Taking the panel no. 8103 in Beixinyao mine as the research object, the characteristics of drawing body shape, particle movement trace, and variation of recovery ratio are investigated by using Particle Flow Code. Furthermore, the effect of mining-caving ratio on the top coal drawing law under DGCM is revealed by the simulation results, and compared with the single-opening sequence caving method (SSCM) and the doubleopenings sequence caving method, advantages of DGCM are determined in inclined seams. The results show that the drawing body can be divided into the left and the right under DGCM. Specifically, the drawn top coal particles in the left are from the upper part of this support, that in the right are from the lower part of next support, which verifies the correctness of the theoretical analysis. The characteristics of the drawing body shape are more significant when the mining-caving ratio is relatively small. In addition, with increasing mining-caving ratio, the recovery ratio of the panel both increases gradually underDGCMand SSCM.When the miningcaving ratio is less than 1:1, the recovery ratio of DGCM is obviously higher than that of SSCM, indicating that DGCM can greatly improve the recovery ratio. While when the mining-caving ratio is larger than 1:1, the recovery ratio of two caving methods is basically equal; however, the advancing time is significantly shortened under DGCM. This study are of great significance to realize high efficiency and precise caving in LTCC with an inclined seam.

Enclosed cab filtration systems are typically used on mobile mining equipment to reduce miners? exposure to airborne dusts and diesel particulates generated during mining operations. Various filter configurationscan be used within the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems of cabs to remove the airborne contaminants. The air cleaning performance of cab filtration systems is highly dependent on the efficiency of the air filters, the number of filters used and their placement within the HVAC system. This paper shows how to mathematically model cab filtration systems and illustrates a methodology for developing other cab filtration system design models. Node diagrams of several filtration system circuits are illustrated with their mathematical models at steady state airflow and concentration conditions. Laboratory and field data are presented to demonstrate the validity and utility of modeling enclosed cab air cleaning performance. The paper concludes that incorporating multiple filters throughout the HVAC system improves the air cleaning performance and robustness of the cab filtration system design

"Early on Jan. 9, 2014, approximately 37,800 L (10,000 gal) of crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (MCHM) leaked from a storage tank sitting on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, WV (WVDEP, 2014; CSB, 2014). MCHM is a chemical commonly used in preparation of fine coal and is considered nonhazardous in terms of transportation, storage regulations and also toxicity (CDC, 2014a). Freedom Industries Inc., a producer and vendor of specialty chemical products, had acquired the storage facility from Etowah River Terminal, LLC just a few weeks prior in December 2013 (WVDEP, 2014; Freedom, 2005). The direct cause of the spill was ultimately determined to be two small holes in the base of the 76-year-old tank, which were created due to corrosion damage (Bauerlein and McWhirter, 2014).The spill site was located a little more than 1.6 km (1 mile) upstream from the intake of a municipal water treatment facility operated by West Virginia American Water (WVAW), which serves a population of 300,000 across nine counties in central West Virginia (CDC, 2014a). In a matter of hours, the leaked MCHM made its way through the treatment facility and into the water of nearby homes and businesses, where its strong smell was noticed almost immediately. On the evening of the spill, WVAW concluded that its conventional treatment processes, which include carbon filters to remove a variety of contaminants from water, were not capable of fully removing the MCHM and a "Do Not Use" order was issued for all customers (WVAW, 2014a).With little information readily available regarding the potential human health effects of MCHM, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quickly issued an advisory ruling that set a maximum screening level of 1 ppm for safe drinking water (CDC, 2014a). Based on this recommendation, the "Do Not Use" order remained in effect for a total of eight days, until Jan. 17, when the WVAW distribution water was confirmed to have MCHM concentrations below the approved level (WVAW, 2014a). However, due to the pungent odor of the chemical, its presence was still recognizable in the WVAW facility and in consumers’ tap water after the order was lifted (Manuel, 2014). Recent studies have shown that the chemical can be detected in water at sub-ppb concentrations, a fact that undoubtedly added to growing public concern (Rosen et al., 2014; Gallagher et al., 2014). In response to numerous complaints and demands, WVAW continued flushing the treatment facility and pipes until Feb. 25 when MCHM levels were measured below 2 ppb (WVAW, 2014b), and eventually replaced the affected filter media (WVAW, 2014c)."
