CoaLiquid, Inc. (CLI) has been in the coal- oil-mixture (COM) business for over five (5) years. The initial pilot processing facility was replaced by a 2000 barrel per day commercial production facility in August of 1979. For over two (2) years CLI has been expanding its efforts and conducting large scale production and combustion demonstrations successfully in many locations across the United States. To facilitate the marketing effort, CLI has recently constructed a special trailer containing all equipment needed for a temporary COM retrofit. CoaLiquid has conducted commercial scale combustion demonstrations in the following types of combustion units: kilns, calciners, industrial boilers, blast furnaces and driers.

In 1976, a decision was made by Anamax Mining Company to install an unusual conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 mi) from the new Eisenhower Mine to the Twin Buttes concentrator. The system, supplied by Cable Belt Limited of the United Kingdom, represents a radical departure from conventional belt conveyors. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes driven by a single 2 240 kw (3 000 HP) drive while the belt acts only as the ore carrying medium. Full production was begun in January, 1979. Start-up problems hampered production for several months but were resolved by a joint Anamax-Cable Belt effort. The system has been operating at design capacity for 4-1/2 years, and has proven itself as a reliable, low cost ore transportation system.

Near misses recorded and reported by workers can provide awarenessto the potential causes of injury and prompt safety management initiatives. Although most companies require near-miss reporting, it is unclear what the value of these reports are, if any, and how they influence subsequent actions or controls to reduce on-the-job risks. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a case study with an aggregates company in which near-miss reports were analyzed at each of their locations over an entire quarter during the summer of 2018. Within that quarter, workers recorded 249 near misses. Of those, 167 were valid near misses that occurred at work. Researchers coded the reports using a qualitative 5 × 5 risk matrix. Of the 167 near misses, 19% were deemed low risk, 25% moderate risk, 30% high risk, and 26% critical risk. Several patterns in the near-miss incidents were documented, including classification of incidents and common corrective actions referenced (i.e., elimination/substitution, engineering control or redesign, work process/procedures, and personal protective equipment). The analysis provides insight into ways that risk communication and management programs can be improved to reengage workers and their situational awareness on the job.

Mr. Chairman, Officers, Members and Guests of the AIME, I want to express my appreciation for the privilege of being on your program at this meeting. Coal mining, in recent years, has become much more competitive than it formerly was. To stay in business, it has been necessary for coal mines to mechanize. This, in itself, has not been enough for after one has mechanized his mine, he must keep replacing the equipment with the latest type and model machines. We, at Olga, have been doing this very thing for the past several years. Olga No. 2 Mine is located at Caretta, West Virginia, in McDovell County, about twelve miles south of Welch, It is a shaft mine, operating in the No. 4 Pocahontas seam. The thickness in the area, we are presently mining, varies from five to six feet. In some areas the immediate roof is slate, ranging in thickness from a few inches to four and five feet; in other places, the sandstone lies on top of the coal, This sandstone is about twenty-five feet thick.

Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) studied the impact of an unregulated dust control technology (the Helmet-CAM) and a regulated dust control technology (the continuous personal dust monitor) within a sociotechnical system (STS) framework to mitigate respirable dust sources. The results address how to best incorporate the overarching principles of meta-design STS during the technology integration process. Specifically, quantitative and qualitative data show that a prominent focus on the social factors within an STS framework could help reduce organizational unpredictability and may improve communication within the system to help reduce technology adoption time.

"The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research on jackleg use and related accidents in underground metal mines. This paper provides an analysis and overview of jackleg drill usage, accidents, operational characteristics and alternatives, based on information from injury reports, legacy research, stakeholder input and published literature. The results indicate that jackleg drills are involved in more groundfall accidents in underground metal mines than any other drill, and jackleg-drill-related injuries are most prevalent at the face in the course of installing initial ground support. Practical mechanized alternatives to jackleg drills for drilling and bolting under incomplete support in narrow underground openings have not yet been realized. Small, versatile mechanized bolting equipment needs to be developed to address jackleg-drill-related accidents and improve safety at mines where jackleg drills are being used. IntroductionJackleg drill is a generic name for a handheld, rotary, percussion rock drill equipped with an attached reaction leg to provide stability and thrust (Fig. 1). All of the drill and leg controls are located near the operator’s handle at the rear of the head portion of the drill. Jackleg drills are classified according to the bore size of their pneumatic pistons, which normally range from 6.03 to 8.26 cm (2.375 to 3.25 in.) (Kurt, 1982; Clark, 2012). Jackleg drills typically weigh 46.7 kg (103 lb), but the weight can approach 54.4 kg (120 lb) after being fitted for operation with drill steel and air and water hoses (McKibbin and Clark, 2001). In underground mines, jackleg drills are commonly used to drill 3.8-cm (1.5-in.) diameter holes up to 1.83 m (6 ft) deep in rock."

Precambrian terranes in the Rocky Mountain region decrease progressively in age from the Archean Wyoming Province (> 2.5 b.y.) to the late Proterozoic in West Texas (figs. 1,2). Within the Wyoming Province, most dates fall near 2.7 b.y. although some are recorded at 2 3.8, 2.9, and 2.6 b.y. Although Penokean (- 1.8 b.y.) deformation and plutonism are recorded in southeastern Wyoming, most Precambrian rocks south of the Wyoming shear zone, which separates the Archean and Proterozoic provinces, are < 1.76 b. years in age. Supracrustal rocks in Colorado, western Arizona, and northern New Mexico fall in the range of 1.72-1.76 b.y., those in central New Mexico about 1.65 b.y., those in southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico about 1.70 b.y., and those in West Texas 1.1-1.2 b.y. The Wyoming Province is comprised chiefly of 2.7 or 2.9 b.y. tonalitic gneiss terranes intruded by 2.6 b.y. granites in the central and southern parts of the province. Supracrustal rocks are minor and include greenstone belts comprised chiefly of pillow- ed tholeiites and graywackes and remnants of quartzite-shale successions. Metamorphic grade in greenstone-gneiss terranes ranges from upper greenschist to amphibolite facies and in quartzite-gneiss terranes from upper amphibolite to granulite facies.

The mining industry collects a significant amount of operational data. However, gleaning useful information from the terabytes of data is difficult, and not just because of the sheer volume of the data. Therefore, an automated tool was developed at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to go through data and apply sophisticated statistical and neural network techniques in order to identify the data streams that are important to a process. This paper presents results from the tool as applied to SAG mill data from a gold mine. The results were compared to results achieved earlier with available commercial modeling tools. The comparison indicates that there was little or no loss in performance by automating the very complicated process of neural network modeling. The device called "Dynastat" which is described in this paper provides in situ borehole measurements of dynamic and static parameters for use in a wide range of design applications. In the dynamic mode, the Oynastat allows measurement of shear and compressional wave velocities. From these velocities in situ dynamic Young&apos;s modulus and other dynamic elastic parameters can be calculated. In the static mode, the device allows measurement of load versus deformation from which in situ static Young&apos;s modulus can be determined. Information on in situ horizontal stress fields can also be estimated from the load deformation curves. In both mining and civil engineering applications, in situ measurements of material properties are indispensable for accurate evaluation of design problems. Laboratory dynamic and static test measurements in comparison to in situ measurements are often misleading due to difficulties in obtaining undisturbed samples and in accounting for effects of discontinuities, etc., for mass properties. The authors contend that among in situ borehole measurements, the method employed with the Dynastat is the most accurate and detailed technique of measurement. The Dynastat employs the crosshole method of shear and compressional wave velocity measurements and also performs as a borehole jack to obtain load-deformation relationships of materials at exactly the same location at depth in boreholes.

Experience at Energy West Mines in the Wasatch Plateau Coal Field, Utah, has shown that longwall face bursts occur mostly near the tailgate when extracting the third adjacent longwall in a panel section where depths exceed 610 m (2000 ft). It is believed that this is due to a combination of cover depth and side abutment stresses created by the widening of a pressure arch formed by interlocking and bridging of large blocks of" very competent strata. The 60-m-thick (200 ft) Castlegate Sandstone probably plays a key role in pressure arching. This paper presents a back-analysis of the location and magnitude of the stresses associated with face bursts that occurred when mining the 7th Right Longwall at the Deer Creek Mine. Improvement of these conditions may be achieved by widening the longwalls to attain critical subsidence width sooner while mining the second long-wall, and to reduce stresses at the face. Wider longwall faces, however, increase the chance of sandstone channel interception often associated with bursts. Satisfactory mitigation of face bursts beyond cover depths of 610 to 670 m (2000 to 2200 ft) may be difficult without using destressing techniques. The hydraulic fracturing/liquid infusion technique seems to offer the best possibilities for application in longwall mining.

The recession that began in late 1980 has proved to be not only prolonged and severe, but in certain ways unique in its effect on the mineral industries among the periods of economic slowdown experienced in the Western world since the end of World War II. This time almost all minerals have been affected. In previous business turndowns, by contrast, some mineral sectors have with-stood economic adversity well. They experienced little or no adverse effect-thanks either to a strong secular expansion in the markets for their particular product or to specific factors that caused demand to be well maintained. For example, aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel are three metals that enjoyed extraordinary growth in applications during the years 1946-1973. These metals were little affected during the recessions that occurred in that era. Similarly, coal did not suffer a pronounced drop in sales in the 1974-75 turndown because, with the price of oil rising sharply, a switch away from oil and back to coal was clearly indicated for some energy-intensive applications. Oil itself was largely impervious to the ups and downs of the business cycle until very recently. And the precious metals, gold and silver, have often been regarded as benefiting from reduced economic activity because labor becomes more available, productivity rises, and operating costs diminish. In the current recession, however, no major mineral has escaped the broad trend. The secular growth factors that were previously so evident for aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel have disappeared, at least temporarily. The stable pricing behavior that previously characterized all three of these commodities has been replaced by extreme price weakness and apparent inability of the major producers to continue their roles as market leaders. Coal and oil both have suffered from a sharp drop in energy requirements. There are those who now anticipate a collapse of the market control over oil prices so clearly exercised by OPEC since 1973. If oil prices are no longer effectively controlled by the governments of the exporting countries, then coal prices are also certain to be affected. And the combination of high interest rates, tight money, and a change in public perceptions of precious metals put the skid under gold and silver quotations in 1981 and early 1982. Although inflation has been viewed as the scourge of most Western countries ever since the oil crises of 1973-74, prices-in constant dollars-of most minerals have not risen. On the contrary, with the exception of the precious metals and oil, for most minerals the prices that prevailed at the end of 1982 were close to the levels of the Great Depression of the 1930s in constant dollar terms. Table 1 compares prices for copper, lead, zinc, and aluminum at the end of 1982 with the average prices in 1934, stated in constant 1967 dollars. This emphasis on prices for mineral commodities reflects the fact that profits of mining enterprises vary directly with the level of prices. Manufacturing and retailing enterprises march to a different tune. They establish sales prices based on costs. Their profits tend to vary with volume. Commodities are for all practical purposes fungible, that is the advantages of known brands in marketing manufactured goods have little application in a commodity market. Thus the individual seller of minerals is unable to establish his sales prices. Except where a monopoly is present, he must sell at the going market. His option is to abstain from selling if he finds the price unremunerative. In past recessions, some mineral producers chose to do precisely that-either accumulating a substantial share of their output in inventory or, in prolonged downturns, abstaining from production. During the current recession, however, private-sector mining companies did not have the option of accumulating inventories to any great extent. Capital costs for new mineral projects or for expansion of existing facilities have escalated at an alarming rate since the early 1970s. Added to this has been the heavy cost of installing pollution control or safety equipment to comply with the regulations adopted in most industrialized countries (and particularly the United States) since 1968. The consequence has been that the financial position of most major mineral enterprises in mid-1980 was already strained. To finance increased inventories meant incurring additional funded debt at high interest costs, thus impairing the concern&apos;s credit rating. Management Choices Private-sector managements have had to face up to the alternative of either continuing to produce at an unchanged rate and marketing output at unremunerative prices or reducing output. As a result of the Farmington explosion, the U. S. Bureau of Mines commissioned the National Academy of Engineering to a determine what steps could be taken in a short time frame to significantly reduce fatalities as a result of underground fire and explosion in coal mines. Three areas were named by the Academy as having the greatest potential; survival, communications, and rescue. The Bureau subsequently awarded a $3-5 million contract to the Special Systems Division of Westinghouse Electric Corporation for the development of prototype equipment and procedures. These were recently tested in a simulated emergency situation and will be delivered soon. Contractor recommendations for utilization and for further development effort will be studied and appropriate action taken.

"Mining plays a key role in the development of modern civilization as a source of essential raw materials and provider of essential fuels, producer of jobs and a factor in support of the international balance of monetary payment (Camm, 2014). Professionals in mining locate, develop, design and manage ore deposits in an environmentally safe and profitable manner. As mineral deposits become increasingly scarce, new challenges face the industry. A current trend is to an increased emphasis on underground mining techniques for deeper deposits. Operations are safer now than before as companies understand better their work environment and the importance of mining responsibly.A continual challenge for the industry is accurately reflecting the costs and selling price of ore. An enduring characteristic of mining is the situation where the market typically determines the price of a commodity; the main control a company has on the bottom line is to control the cost of production.An attempt to bring light and clarity to the cost of their business will give a better idea to investors on the true profitability of the mining business. Gold producers face this struggle to accurately reflect the cost of production while also seeking to attract the interest of the investment community (Hill, 2013). In order to have a consistent format to report on their production costs, leading gold producers, through their alliance inside the World Gold Council (WGC), worked on the adoption of a new cost framework: the all-in sustaining cost (AISC) and all-in cost (AIC).Since 1996, the traditional cash cost reporting has focused only on the mining and processing costs incurred in mining an ounce of gold, which included the costs of goods sold (labor, energy, and consumables costs) and royalties (Table 1). But cash cost reporting ignores many important aspects, like sustaining capital, general and administrative expenses and site rehabilitation at the end of the mine life (Whelan, 2013). The cash cost was used to attract many investors into the business. In fact, the high gross margin (sales minus cash costs) has been promoted in past decades by the industry instead of the net or operating margin. As a result, even when the gold price was high, nearly $61/g ($1,900/oz) in August 2011, gold producers were not reporting excessive profits in their cash flow/income statements, to the disappointment and incomprehension of investors (Milstead, 2014). The truth was simply that the other costs omitted in the traditional cash cost were reducing the apparent profits.The disconnect led to a need for more accurate cost reporting in order to win back investor confidence and provide better understanding of gold mining economics. In 2012, the senior gold mining companies, including Gold Fields, Barrick Gold Corp. and Newmont Mining Corp., worked with the WGC to develop a new measure. This resulted in the June 2013 publication of the new framework AISC and AIC, which has been widely embraced by the sector since Jan. 1, 2014 (WGC, 2013).The adoption of the new cost template would have the dilemma of showing the real profitability of gold mine properties, which might alleviate taxes from governments and legislators, but it might also scare off investors toward more lucrative industries if not winning back their confidence."

Flotation process is particle hydrophobic surface-based separation technique. To improve the essential flotation steps of collision and attachment, and reduce detachment probabilities between air bubbles and hydrophobic particles, a selectively designed cavitaion venture-tube can be used to generate very high numbers of pico-nano bubbles to flotation column. Fully embraced by those high numbers of tiny bubbles, hydrophobic particles are readily attracting those tiny bubbles to their surfaces. The results of column flotation of Pittsburgh No.8 seam coal are obtained in a 50 cm ID and 162cm height flotation column equipped with static-mixer and cavitation-venture tube, using kerosene as collector and MIBC as frother. Design of experiment procedure combined with statistical two-stepwise analysis method are applied and attempted to made the optimizing the grade and recovery. The effect of independent variables on response has been explained. Combustible material recovery of 85-90% at clean coal product of 10-11 % ash are obtained from feed of 29.6% ash, with reduced amount of frother and collector than that used in conventional column flotation. The column flotation process utilizing the pico-nanobubbles can also be extended to the lower limit and upper limit of particle size ranges for better recovery minus 75 µm and 300-600 µm, respectively.

The construction involved in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Contract No. lK0011 (K-1), encompassed some 2,621 meters of single track parallel tube rapid transit tunnels, 335 meters of cut-cover subway station and appurtenant ventilation structures at each end, and a fan shaft at approximately the mid point of the tunnels. The construction contract was awarded June 7, 1974 to a Joint Venture consisting of Intercounty Construction Corporation, Hyattsville, Maryland, and S $ M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio. The former being responsible for performing the cut and cover construction, and the latter being charged with constructing the running tunnels and fan shaft at their mid point. (See Fig. 1) The problems of mining and supporting, the 183 meters of twin tunnels just east of Court House Square Station, by unique mixed face and soft ground mining methods is the main subject of this report, although a general review of the tunnels in their entirety, as well as the geology encountered in the excavations, is presented to give a better overall setting for the problems encountered. "Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure and other types of sensors are increasingly used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in the new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP), while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration and testing methodologies employed by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide IP data transport.IntroductionTo enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry (Zhou et al., 2017). However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies that are part of IIoT.This was the case with a mine in the Western United States. It lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. Therefore, the mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for the real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder communications system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios (NIOSH, 2013; Forooshani et al., 2013; Novak, Snyder and Kohler, 2010; Yarkan et al., 2009). The solution, fully evaluated in laboratory and mine environments, requires no modifications to the existing system, is economical, simple to implement, and reliable. It also allows for transition to higher-bandwidth IT networks, such as fiber optic or WiFi, should they become available."

The world energy crisis has created a greatly expanded exploration program for energy fuels. The demand for materials required for drilling operations such as barite, which is the primary component of drilling fluids, has increased proportionally. As in the case of many other minerals, existing high grade barite mines are no longer capable of producing the required tonnage. Consequently, exploration and development of lower grade ore bodies has been increased. The need to produce a high quality product at maximum recovery rates, along with the ever changing economics affecting both selling price and production costs has triggered accelerated research programs toward more sophisticated and efficient beneficiation methods. Taking into account the specific gravity differential between barite (4.5) and the normal gangue minerals such as silica and calcite (2.7), gravity concentration methods are the prime consideration with flotation as a scavenging process. Greater emphasis on particle size liberation, size reduction and concentration is also indicated. In order to accomplish these objectives, it has been necessary to revert back to the old adage, "Recover your minerals as soon as they are free."

This paper discusses the use of Conditional Simulation (CS) models to provide mill feed grade profiles for different time periods. The conventional approach of classifying block estimates as ore or waste generally does not adequately represent dilution, lost ore and the anticipated grade control data, including variability of mill feed from the pit and possible stockpiles. The detailed simulation of grade control practices can be done, but at the Pre- or Feasibility stage of the project may be impractical, since drawing dig limits on multiple benches is tedious and time consuming. Using the Feasibility Grade Control (FGC) method as developed by the Centre for Computational Geostatistics (CCG, University of Alberta-Edmonton), the CS models can be processed quickly to establish dilution and lost ore, and predict daily or short-term feed to the mill. The simulated nodes can be aggregated into selective mining units with adequate representation of likely geometries to be recovered from the pit, to mimic anticipated selectivity. An example from a large copper deposit is shown. The study provides an estimated stream of tonnages and grades fed to the plant by mining periods of interest and based on a specific mine design and schedule. The resulting cash flows support the economic and financial analyses of the Feasibility Study; also leads to improving mine schedules; and aids in developing blending schemes if necessary. INTRODUCTION The conventional approach of separating mineralized material into ore or waste categories does not always include a realistic amount of dilution and ore loss. Also, often it does not provide a good estimate of the grade that will be fed to the mill. If the grade control estimates are unbiased, they will over the long run represent the long-term average of grades fed to the mill; but the anticipated variability of mill feed from the pit and stockpile sources may be misrepresented. Some references on traditional grade control implementations can be found in Chunnett (1982); Davis et al. (1989); Srivastava et al. (1992); and Nowak (1992). Alternative methods based on economic variables improved significantly on the purely grade-based control methods, see Douglas et al. (1994). Further developments involved the use of geostatistical conditional simulations (CS) and profit models, which in several cases have been successfully implemented (Aguilar and Rossi, 1996; Rossi, 1997; Deutsch et al., 2000; Norrena and Deutsch, 2002; Neufeld, 2005; Jewbali and Dimitrakopoulos, 2009). But they can be impractical, mostly due to the lack of understanding of the methodology involved; even if semi-automatic dig limit drawing is implemented, there is always a need for is tedious and time consuming checking and corrections, even if using a single profit model derived from the simulated grades.

In an autogenous grinding circuit in which feed at approximately nine inches top size is reduced to a size suitable for subsequent processing, the build- up of a "critical size" fraction in the media causes problems. A "critical size" fraction has been defined as, "media too small to effect reduction by impact grinding of ore coarser than a quarter of an inch and too large to be broken by the largest size of media in the charge. 9, (1) The buildup of a "critical size" fraction reduces the capacity of the mill, increases the grinding power requirements per ton of finished product, and generally produces a finer grind than is desired. It is general practice to overcome this problem by the addition of large diameter steel balls to the grinding charge. This has certain disadvantages, such as; (i) an increase in mill liner wear; (ii) wear on the steel balls, and; (iii) some loss in flexibility in grinding circuit operations resulting from difficulties in removing the steel balls by means other than by grinding out.

As part of a funded project we have completed a comparative literature survey of the US regional Proterozoic geology. For our com¬parative study model we used the geological settings of the very large pitchblende deposits in Saskatchewan, Canada and the Northern Terri¬tory of Australia. These occur in a variety of Archean and Lower Proterozoic host rocks, at and below a regional unconformity that is capped by subhorizontal Middle to Upper Proterozoic conti¬nental sedimentary rocks. We find that there have been recorded in some parts of the US similar unconformable sequences of Middle to Upper Proterozoic continental sedimentary rocks that overlie older basement rocks.
