The mineral price assigned in mining project design is critical to determining the economic feasibility of a project. Nevertheless, although it is not difficult to find literature about market metal prices, it is much more complicated to achieve a specific methodology for calculating the value or which justifications are appropriate to include. This study presents an analysis of various methods for selecting metal prices and investigates the mechanisms and motives underlying price selections. The results describe various attitudes adopted by the designers of mining investment projects, and how the price can be determined not just by means of forecasting but also by consideration of other relevant parameters.

Long-term stability, appropriate taxation and incentive policies are essential to attract and stimulate investment in the mineral sector. An outline of Ontario's $4.6 billion industry and associated tax incentives is presented. Producers are offered incentives under The Mining Tax Act, federal and provincial income tax acts for exploration and development by reducing Me after tax cost to 13-25¢ for each dollar spent. The Mining Tax Act provides generous processing incentives which have positive effects in enhancing investment and economic advantages of building processing facilities. Non-mining companies and entrepreneurial individuals can receive 25% of eligible exploration expenditures in grants/tax credits under the Ontario Mineral Exploration Program.

The concept of sustainable development is not new to the mining industry. Many people involved with mining have argued that the industry throughout the world has always supported the communities where they operated. They say that the mining industry was employing sustainable development practices before the phrase became fashionable. The mines employed residents and supported the local economy through tax payments and the purchase of goods and services from local businesses. In many cases, mining companies have built medical facilities and contributed money, equipment and services to local schools. In modern times, mining companies have donated reclaimed land to the local communities for use as parks and recreational facilities.

Stillwater Mining Co. (SMC) is the largest primary producer of platinum and palladium in North America. SMC operates two underground mines in south central Montana, along the 45-km (28-mile) platinum/palladium J-M Reef in the Stillwater Complex. The Stillwater Mine exploits 9.6 km (6 miles) of deposit strike length and East Boulder Mine exploits 4 km (2.5 miles) of deposit length. The two mines are 20.4 km (12.7 miles) apart with SMC controlling a considerable length along the entire J-M Reef trace. Production at the Stillwater Mine began in 1986 and in 1988 the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) was commissioned, becoming an integral part of mine development at SMC. TBMs have been used for developing production footwall laterals (FWL) to access new mining blocks at the Stillwater Mine, as well as boring twin crosscut ac-cess tunnels at the East Boulder. Two TBM development expansion projects are currently in progress: the Graham Creek project at the East Boulder Mine, which will extend footwall lateral development 2,591 m (8,500 ft) to the west, and the Blitz project, where a TBM will be commissioned to extend east out of the Stillwater Mine to 3,658 m (12,000 ft) beyond the current production mining front. General strike and dip of the Reef is west to east and to the north, respectively.

MFIRE, the mine-fire simulation program of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), is widely accepted as a standard for assessing and predicting the impact of a fire on the mine ventilation system and the spread of fire contaminants in coal and metal/nonmetal mines. MFIRE has been used by U.S. and international companies to simulate fires for planning and response purposes. It is a dynamic, transient-state, mine ventilation network simulation program that performs normal planning calculations. It can also be used to analyze ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence, such as changes in ventilation parameters; external influences, such as changes in temperature; and internal influences, such as a fire. The program output can be used to analyze the effects of these influences on the ventilation system. Since its original development by Michigan Technological University for the former U.S. Bureau of Mines in the 1970s, several updates have been released. In 2012, NIOSH completed a major redesign and restructuring of the program with the release of MFIRE 3.0. MFIRE’s outdated Fortran programming language was replaced with an object-oriented C++ language and packaged into a dynamic-link library. However, the MFIRE 3.0 release included no change or improvement to the fire-modeling algorithms inherited from its previous version, MFIRE 2.20. This paper reports on improvements that have been made to the fire-modeling capabilities of MFIRE 3.0 since its release. These improvements include the addition of the t-squared fire as a new fire-source model and the ability to include available heat-release-rate versus time data, the addition of a moving fire source for conveyor-belt fire simulations, improvement of the fire location algorithm, and the identification and prediction of smoke-rollback phenomena. All of the improvements discussed in this paper will be included in MFIRE 3.1 and released by NIOSH in the near future.

The difficult and often harsh working environment of the mining industry can stress both personnel and equipment to the extreme. Often, the unintended consequences of this environment lead to confrontations between departments, as each goes about its tasks of mining, maintaining or supporting these activities. On occasion, the confrontations may result in criticism of other departments for perceived or real sins or omissions. The offended department may not be able to change the circumstances, but can only complain while frustration persists. The most effective solutions are the actions of the mine manager. By establishing mutually supporting roles of each department and specifying conditions for the interactive conduct of maintenance, the mine manager can better assure that the inherent problems of the mining environment are neutralized.

Perhaps no other mineral commodities in this volume have as many uses as limestone and dolomite. These carbonate rocks are the basic building blocks of the construction industry, the material from which aggregate, cement, lime, and building stone are made. Carbonate rocks, and their derived products, are used as aggregates, fluxes, glass raw material, refractories, fillers, reactive agents in sulfur-oxide removal, abrasives, soil conditioners, ingredients in a host of chemical processes, and much more. Although the use of limestone and dolomite goes back before recorded history, new uses and products are continually being found. Carbonate rocks form about 15% of the earth's sedimentary crust and are widely available for exploitation. Found extensively on all continents, they are quarried and mined from formations that range in age from Precambrian to Holocene. Reserves of carbonate rock are large and will last indefinitely, although high-purity deposits may be absent or have limited availability in certain areas. Limestone and dolomite are so useful and so abundant that in 1989 about 798 Mt were produced in the United States. In fact, about 75% of all stone quarried or mined in the United States was carbonate rock. Sand and gravel was the only mineral commodity produced in greater quantity. In this chapter we have sought to provide the general reader an overview of carbonate rocks, their composition, distribution, production, and uses. The literature on the limestone and dolomite resources of the United States and Canada is so vast and diverse that one can easily become mired in print. We tried to list those references that are easily accessible and that provide the economic geologist with a starting point for more intensive study. The table listing selected references on limestone and dolomite resources in Canada and the United States reflects our attempt to be selective rather than exhaustive and to direct the reader to the best sources of detailed information.

We explain mathematically why underground production scheduling is more difficult than its openpit counterpart and provide directions for research in the underground scheduling arena.

The use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment is well known. Its use to measure grinding efficiency was presented by C.A. Rowland, Jr. at an AIME meeting in 1976. However, due to a bureaucratic error, the paper was never submitted for publication. This metric has nevertheless been adopted by industry as a widely used standard. The purpose of this paper is to re-present and update the application of this tool as a standard for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. Definition ?standard, n. something established for use as a rule or basis of comparison in measuring or judging capacity, content, extent, value, quality, etc.; as standards of weight and measure? The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has observed that many control rooms and operator compartments in the U.S. mining industry do not have filtration systems capable of maintaining low dust concentrations in these areas. In this study at a mineral processing plant, to reduce respirable dust concentrations in a control room that had no cleaning system for intake air, a filtration and pressurization system originally designed for enclosed cabs was modified and installed. This system was composed of two filtering units: one to filter outside air and one to filter and recirculate the air inside the control room. Eighty-seven percent of submicrometer particles were reduced by the system under static conditions. This means that greater than 87 percent of respirable dust particles should be reduced as the particle-size distribution of respirable dust particles is greater than that of submicrometer particles, and filtration systems usually are more efficient in capturing the larger particles. A positive pressure near 0.02 inches of water gauge was produced, which is an important component of an effective system and minimizes the entry of particles, such as dust, into the room. The intake airflow was around 118 cfm, greater than the airflow suggested by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) for acceptable indoor air quality. After one year, the loading of the filter caused the airflow to decrease to 80 cfm, which still produces acceptable indoor air quality. Due to the loading of the filters, the reduction efficiency for submicrometer particles under static conditions increased to 94 percent from 87 percent.

Booster fans increase air pressure to overcome resistance, the objective being to force adequate amounts of air through distant workings. They are used in areas that are difficult or uneconomic to ventilate with main fans alone. Booster fans are currently permitted in underground coal mines in some countries; the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia and Canada have been defined as major users. Booster fans are not allowed in the US bituminous and lignite coal mining operations at the present time due to safety concerns. This paper presents the history of booster fan use in coal mines of the United States during the last 90 years. Changes in regulations, as well as advantages and disadvantages of booster fan use, are discussed. Research and petitions for booster fan use are highlighted in order to bring the debate into focus.

The annual ICGCM China was initiated in 2014. Up to 2023, ICGCM China has been held 9 times. In the 9 conferences during the past 10 years, about 559 papers in 17 topical areas were presented and attendance ranged from 200+ to 400+ each conference. The 42nd ICGCM China was held in Xiangtan, Hunan, China, 10/20–10/22/2023. There were 86 papers presented in 26 topical areas. In addition, an MS and PhD Research Forum was held concurrently with 36 papers presented by MS and PhD candidates in mining engineering from 8 schools. The conference plays an important role in cultivating advanced degree student talents. In this paper, all 559 papers reviewed previously were summarized. In addition, the 42nd ICGCM China is used to illustrate the current and future development trends of coal mine ground control in China. It summarizes the 122 papers (including 36 MS and PhD forum papers) grouping into, and in terms of, 26 topical areas. In addition, its unique and innovative subject areas, short summary of developments as well as conference strengths and shortcomings will also be presented.

In this study, FLAC3D modeling was conducted for ground-structure stability assessment for a pilot tunnel passing under a large shaft excavated in the vicinity of existing structures at Karangahape Station for the City Rail Link Project in Auckland, New Zealand. The analysis involved generation of the geometries and construction sequences in Rhinoceros®, modeling the existing ground condition, calibration of the simulated in situ conditions with the observed behavior of the ground, and excavation of the shaft and the pilot tunnel. A comprehensive interpretation of the results was then performed accompanied by comparison of the predicted behavior with the observed response of the ground during construction.

INTRODUCTION The concern of occupational exposure to diesel exhaust pollutants is an important workplace issue for the mining industry. During the last three decades of diesel operations at Inco, a significant amount of research and improvement has been made in the area of work environment, and effective diesel operation. This paper will review the experience gained by Inco's Ontario Division from the implementation and the use of modern engines, improved fuel quality, and the exhaust control technology, coupled with adherence to proper maintenance and ventilation design and practices. Past monitoring practices and the current occupational monitoring program at lnco are outlined. A major new research initiative involving multi-stake holders in diesel performance is described. MINING IN THE SUDBURY AREA The discovery of nickel-copper ore in the Sudbury area dates back to the year 1856. The existence of this orebody was noticed when a strong compass deflection was observed by a provincial surveyor. This discovery, even though documented in official re- ports, failed to arouse any public attention at that time. In 1884, a rock-cut was blasted through a small hill near the village of Sudbury to permit laying track for the Canadian Pacific Railway (Boldt 1967). The rock-cut uncovered a body of massive sulfides with a copper content of over nine percent. The mineralization is concentrated along the outer margin of the Sudbury Basin, an oval-shaped structure having a dimension of 55 x 95 kilometres. The ore extends down-dip to to at least 3000 metres below the surface. The mining methods at lnco can be divided into two categories: "filled-stope" and 'bulk" mining. This division, in the broad sense, may also reflect the environmental conditions of the mine. In the past, the selection of a mining method was based on the size, shape, grade and the strength of the ore and its surroundings. The recent development of improved technology and mining equipment permitted wider application of low cost bulk mining methods. UNDERGROUND DIESEL EQUIPMENT The first diesel-powered machine, a 145-horsepower scooptram, was put into operation in March 1966, in a cut-and-fill stoping complex at Frood Mine. The number of diesel machines underground in the Inco, Ontario Division, mines was increased to 360 units by 1971,550 in 1977 (Rutherford 1978), and over 830 diesel-powered units in 1995. The following list indicates current mobile diesel equipment. LHD 194 Loaders 81 Trucks 28 Jumbo Drills 78 Personnel Carrier 101 Service Equipment 155 Locomotives 50 Bolters 30 Scissor Lift 113 About 20 percent of the LHD and truck units are equipped with electronic fuel controlled engines. COMPOSITION OF DIESEL EXHAUST Diesel exhaust contains hundreds of pollutants (Watts 19921, including components of unburned fuel and lubricating oil and products of incomplete combustion of the fuel and oil. These pollutants are emitted either as gases or as particles. Gaseous pollutants include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur ox- ides, as well as a variety of organic compounds, such as hydro- carbons, aldehydes, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. The particle phase, also known as diesel particulate matter (DPM), is the filterable portion of diesel exhaust. Figure 1 depicts the trimodal particle size distribution that arises from different mechanisms of aerosol generation (Cantrell and Rubow 1992). Primary combustion aerosols, including diesel exhaust aerosol, are formed as very small particles (in the 0.001 to 0.08 micrometre range), but physical mechanisms such as condensation and coagulation quickly transfer the aerosol mass from the nuclei mode to the accumulation mode. These processes result in a mass median diameter of approximately 0.2 micrometres for diesel particulate matter, and 90% of the particles are less than 1.0 micrometre in size. These particles have a high surface area, permitting the adsorption of different substances produced during combustion. Mechanically generated aerosols, on the other hand, typically contain particles greater than 1 micrometre in diameter. The particle phases of diesel exhaust contain three components (Bagley, et al, 1996) shown by Figure 2, namely: a carbon- aceous fraction composed mainly of solid-carbon particles, a sulfate fraction containing small hydrated sulfate particles, and a soluble fraction that contains compounds that are soluble in organic solvents and are adsorbed or condensed onto carbon core particles. These compounds consist primarily of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and PAH's and may contribute 15% to 45% of the weight of the total particulate matter (Schuetzle, 1983). The control of these pollutants is necessary to ensure a healthy work environment. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to determine the effectiveness of a filtered air delivery system to reduce respirable dust exposure of roof bolter operators in underground coal mines. When performing roof bolting operations, roof bolter operators may experience exposure to high levels of respirable dust during a working shift, especially when working downwind of the continuous mining machine. While drilling and installing roof bolts, this filtered air system supplies a clean curtain of air over the roof bolter operator by means of a plenum mounted beneath the canopy. This experimentally designed air curtain, adapted for roof bolting machines used in this study, is based upon previous design prototypes, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and trial-and-error testing. Both the prototype and final designs were tested in the full-scale mining galleries at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) in Pittsburgh, PA before being taken underground for field testing. Test results of the system in both laboratory and field studies show reductions in operator exposure to respirable dust when the operator is positioned directly under the protected zone of the canopy.

Tracer gas sampling methods are useful for monitoring ventilation systems, especially in remote or inaccessible areas, and can be utilized for analysis of the ventilation system immediately following a mine emergency. However, the success of this technique is largely dependent on the accuracy of release and sampling methods. Analysis of sampling methods is crucial for rapid response and dependable results during emergencies. For the purpose of this study, four well-accepted sampling techniques currently used in the mining industry were compared using solid-phase microextraction (SPMe) fibers with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), an industry standard, as the tracer gas. Current sample collection techniques include plastic syringes, glass syringes, Tedlar bags and vacutainers. SPMe fibers are used in a variety of industries, from forensics to environmental sampling, and are a solventless method of sampling analytes. To analyze these sampling methods, samples were taken from a 0.01 % standard mixture of SF6 and nitrogen and analyzed using electron capture gas chromatography. A relative standard error of less than 10% validated results to compare the accuracy of various methods. The technical and practical issues surrounding each sampling method were also observed and discussed.

Zinc concentrates received in La Oroya zinc refinery are marmatitic in nature, contain about 11% iron and traces of other metal values, Figure 1 shows the zinc circuit. The calcine from the roasted concentrates is leached in spent zinc electrolyte. Major part of the impurities is iron which has been oxidized to its trivalent form, This is the origin of the zinc leach residue for which the ZILERET process was developed and so named. The impure liquor from the leach is sent for purification and thence to electrolysis- zinc deposits on aluminum cathodes from which: it is stripped, melted and cast into slabs Typical assays of zinc calcine and leach residue are given in Table 1. Metal values contained in the leach residue, without counting any value of iron, amount to roughly $130 per short ton.
