PROPERTY AND PRODUCTION: Around 100 Million Tons of Recoverable Coal are available from the approximate 10,000 acres allocated to the mine. Over 1300 acres of surface land holdings extend well beyond the limits required for plant site, storage tracks, water supply reservoir, settling ponds and waste disposal. COAL: Extensive core drilled testing confirmed the early indicated high quality of the #6 Seam Washability data show less than four percent of the' coal seam required removal to provide a superior product for the available market. PREPARATION PANT DESIGN: The limited needs enabled Preparation Plant Design to meet the requirements without inclusion of novel equipment. The simplified needs afforded ample opportunity for considering increased automation where advantage or economy was antioipated. Plant design included protection of opportunity for pre-drying in advance of air cleaning the fine coal and accommodations for addition of Dense Media separating equipment in event warranted or required by future market changes. Protection is also afforded for addition of Raw Coal Storage accommodations in event warranted. Figure I shows the Preparation Plant Flow Sheet.

The largest hard rock TBM ever to bore in the USA, an 11.6 m diameter Robbins Main Beam TBM, recently underwent a planned in-tunnel diameter change to a more compact 9.9 meters. The first-of-itskind conversion process for the Main Beam TBM was undertaken 2.8 km into the bore and was not done inside a shaft or pre-excavated portal. This paper will detail the unique dual-diameter machine designed for the Mill Creek Drainage Relief Tunnel in Dallas, Texas, USA, machine performance, and successful size conversion process that took place in early 2021—a process that utilized the four C’s of construction to enormous benefit: Communication, Cooperation, Collaboration and Coordination.

In 1988, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) imposed a no-blasting specification (blasting is restricted to the construction shaft and shaft bottom or boot) on the Deep Tunnel project. This was prompted by numerous complaints from residents in the vicinity of the project and controversies experienced on previous projects from blasting the rock overlying the tunnel. This paper will describe the methods used by two major contractors driving 20 km (12.5 miles) of tunnel, and drilling more than 36 shafts under this restrictive specification. The impacts are detailed on design, construction, schedule, cost and the environment.

The Kemmerer Coal Company's Sorensen Mine is located approximately 7 miles Southwest of the Town of Kemmerer, Lincoln County, Wyoming. The coal it produces is delivered via conveyor directly to Utah Power and Light's Naughton Steam Generating Plant. The Plant went on the line in the spring of 1963 and the Sorensen Mine has been producing coal since February of that year. In this period, approximately 2, 000, 000 tons of coal have been delivered to the Plant. Present Sorensen mining operations are being carried out in the upper seams of the Adaville Formation. The formation contains, in some places, up to 30 coal seams of varying quality and thickness. Thirteen seams are considered major and are given numbers; the rest are considered splits off of the major seams and are so named. The lowest seam stratigraphically is the No. 1, or Elkol seam. So far, it has not been committed to power production but is being held in- reserve. It is the thickest seam with 80-90 feet of coal as its average thickness. The other major seams vary from 10-50 feet thick, with most of the seams averaging 17-26 feet of thickness. Each major seam has been opened at least once' to obtain a true gross sample of the coal's performance in the Plant.

The Meadow River No. 1 Preparation Plant, owned by Sewell Coal Company, a subsidiary of the Pittston Company, was commissioned in the spring of 1974. The plant is designed to process 400 TPH of 5" x 0 raw coal. The 5" x 114'l fraction is processed in a Heavy Medium Vessel with the 114 x 28M reporting to Deister Tables for cleaning. The 28M x 0 fraction is cleaned in flotation cells, with the froth going to clean coal vacuum filters and the tailings to a static thickener where the underflow is reclaimed on Refuse Filters prior to disposal. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the noise exposure in that particular environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: [ ]

The stresses in the materials surrounding an underground opening are dependent upon the virgin stress field, the geometry of the opening and changes in boundary conditions as mining progresses. For most underground openings especially in coal mines, roof bolts are installed to help stabilize the opening. While most parameters in roof bolt design and installation have been thoroughly investigated, the effects of the initial stress field on the effectiveness of roof bolts have not been recognized. This paper summarizes the results of investigation of the effect of the initial stress field on the performance of mine roof bolts. Roof bolt installations are duplicated in the laboratory utilizing conventional roof bolt frame, commercial roof bolts and shells, mine torque wrench and encapsulated rock specimens for anchorage. A special and primary feature of the laboratory set-up is the addition of a loading system for generating stresses at the anchorage specimens. For this preliminary study, different levels of hydrostatic stress fields were induced at the anchorage specimen, instrumented roof bolts were installed in the usual manner, and the bolt load loss-with-time observed. Statistical analysis of data showed that the stress field at the anchorage horizon has a considerable influence on the performance of mine roof bolts, i.e. the higher the stress field, the higher the anchorage efficiency. From this observation, methods of improving the performance of mine roof bolts utilizing new shell designs and methods of installing them are suggested.

Generally speaking, erosion, as a process which entails degradation of surface layers of earth under the influence of the mechanical energy of surface waters, and from the point of view of biosphere sustainability, is a harmful process. This is absolutely true when agricultural and forest areas are concerned. However, if erosion is viewed selectively, this general definition about its harm raises serious questions. In other words, the erosion which takes place in the terrains where there is no vegetation because of the geological composition of the soil, does no harm. On the contrary, if the mineralogical composition of such terrains is characterized by a presence of precious and rare metals, erosion can be very useful. It contributes to the creation of new alluvial deposits of these metals in the waters in the plain land. It is here that torrents from hills come down and cause erosion. And finally, if there were no erosion, there would be no renewable deposits of gravel and sand.

"The topic of ground movements in Germany has been studied extensively in the past, especially in the field of active mines. The active hard coal mines were finally shut down in 2018 in Germany and lignite mining is expected to take place only until 2038. The so-called long-term liabilities of the mine operators in Germany include, among other things, the long-term guarantee of stability and thus the monitoring of ground motion.So far, the economic use of underground mining in Germany was mainly the supply of raw materials. In the future, the underground storage of compressed air, methane, or hydrogen will play an important role in renewable energy supply and climate change. Therefore, underground storage space will become more important and spatial planning is essential to ensure availability of safe underground openings for the various options of environmentally friendly energy storage.However, this renewed usage of underground openings may also bring new and sometimes unknown challenges of geomechanical influence. On the one hand, the aftermath of hard coal and lignite mining will be an increasing challenge in mining subsidence engineering. On the other hand, new possibilities due to underground spatial planning may lead to subsidence and/or heaving of the upper surface.INTRODUCTIONBoth hard coal and lignite have a long tradition in Germany. The Prosper Haniel mine in the Ruhr area was closed at the end of 2018 after 150 years, which signalled the end of hard coal production in Germany. Lignite mining still takes place in the Central German, Lausitz, and Rhineland districts. However, lignite mining in Germany is expected to be phased out gradually by 2038 (MDR, 2019). With the closure of these mines, however, mining damage is not over. The long-term consequences of mining, which extend far beyond the closure of the mines, are associated with the liability and responsibility of the individual mining companies. The so-called eternity burdens on the mining company continue to apply. In the field of lignite production, the discontinuation of dewatering and the resulting possible elevations of the surface will be a relevant topic for the future of mine surveying. The same applies to the hard coal mines, which are partially flooded in Germany and therefore require extensive monitoring of soil movements in the future.The discontinuation of energy from hard coal and lignite calls for a change in the energy mix. With the renewable energy revolution in Germany, the focus is on a sustainable and environmentally compatible climate and energy policy based on renewable energies. Sustainable use of the subsoil, both natural and anthropogenically produced cavities, will play an essential role in the objectives of this policy. For example, disused mine cavities can be used to store electricity from renewable energy sources. (Umwelt Bundesamt, 2018) These functions will again cause classical ground movements such as subsidence and uplift, but will also bring new challenges for the mine surveyor. Challenges can be underground cavity exploration in inaccessible areas or legal aspects of underground competition."

The Surface Mining control and Reclamation Act (public Law 95-87) (here-inafter the "Act" or "SMCRA") passed by congress in August of 1977 represents a comprehensive federal scheme for controlling surface coal mining and the surface effects of underground mining through permitting requirements, performance guidelines, and reclamation planning. While the provisions of the Act have been the subject of numerous legal challenges and court battles over the years, it is difficult to identify a more controversial program within the Act than the provisions for designating lands as unsuitable for surface coal mining operations. The lands unsuitable designation process provides for the acceptance and review of petitions submitted by citizens or organizations seeking to have specified land areas designated unsuitable for all or certain types of surface coal mining activities. In filing these petitions, the interested parties or petitioners are required to make allegations about potential adverse impacts on people or the environment and submit evidence supporting their allegations.

The Lake Mead Intake No. 2 is a project constructed for the Southern Nevada Water Authority which includes a 12-foot diameter lake tap and intake shaft constructed in over 225 feet of water; 1650 feet of 16x14-foot horseshoe-shaped tunnel leading to a forebay that is 165 feet long, 35 feet tall, and 30 feet wide; twenty-two 4-foot diameter steel lined well shafts extending 325 feet from the ground surface to the forebay; 3500 feet of 12-foot diameter pipeline crossing a bay in Lake Mead that has water depths of up to 80 feet; and 2700 feet of 9-footdiameter steel-pipe-lined tunnel. Major site grading for a future pumping station in the area above the forebay is also included as part of the project. The project is on the schedule’s critical path for completing the first phase of a $2 billion water supply program for the Las Vegas Valley. In this paper, the owner, the designer and the construction manager present a discussion of the risk management strategies that were used to control costs, minimize project delays, and facilitate problem resolution. The discussion includes an assessment of the effectiveness of the risk management strategies in meeting these objectives. This paper will be of interest to owners and engineers planning underground projects, especially those projects that present unique risks during the construction phase.

The Zarafshan/Newmont Joint Venture operates the Muruntau heap leach project, located in the Kyzylkum desert of central Uzbekistan. The mine produces more than 12.4 t/a (400,000 oz/year) of gold from low-grade oxide ore stockpiles adjacent to the Muruntau open pit. It is op¬erated by the Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combine and is one of the largest gold resources known (Fig. 1). Since commissioning in 1995, total heap leach production has exceeded 21 t (675,000 oz). The joint venture uses four-stage crushing and screening to produce a final product for heap leaching, Merrill-Crowe processing and local refining.

The Southern Company is one of the nation's largest electric utilities and is the parent firm of five operating companies: Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power, Mississippi Power and Savannah Electric and Power. Another subsidiary is Southern Company Services (SCS) which provides engineering and technical sup-port to the five operating companies. This technical support includes the procurement and supply of over 40.9 Mt (45 million st) of coal annually for the 22 coal fired plants in the system. Approximately 80 percent of this tonnage is purchased under long term contracts and the remaining 20 percent is purchased on the spot market. The coal is principally supplied from Alabama, Illinois Basin and the eastern Appalachian coal fields. Most of the coal is delivered by unit train and barge but one plant in Alabama receives all its coal by truck and conveyor belt.

"INTRODUCTION Urban tunneling is often related with special geotechnical risks. Typical causes are difficult (hydro)geological conditions, a very low overburden and the presence of critical and vulnerable (infra)structures in the influence zone of the construction (e.g. existing tunnels, roads and pavements, sewer pipes, gas and power lines, landmarked buildings, historic monuments). To manage these risks appropriately, an early detection and warning of unexpected behavior of the affected geotechnical objects ground and tunnel, as well as existing structures are mandatory. To accomplish this, the design and execution of a dense geotechnical monitoring program is of high importance. In more detail, this means specifying and performing a systematic and continuous acquisition, processing and analysis of monitoring data to support decision making. In recent years the development of new automatic sensors and (wireless) data transfer techniques and the general trend towards an automatic acquisition of monitoring data has led to an enormous increase of data production frequencies and volumes. In order to handle this data explosion efficiently, information systems and geo-databases have been developed and used successfully in many projects. They represent IT tools that support the different tasks of a given geotechnical monitoring program including data acquisition, transfer, check, processing, backup, analysis, distribution, reporting and, last but not least, alarming. Meanwhile, some tools already have developed the capability to connect to other theme-specific databases used in the project and, thus, serve as a central data management system for all kind of digital data produced. This makes possible the implementation of further useful functions and services supporting tunneling tasks such as machine control, tunnel simulation, geological prediction, process optimization, etc. where data from different engineering disciplines must be combined and processed in an integrated way. In the following chapters our aim is to describe how monitoring data management, geotechnical monitoring, alarming and reporting are organized and technically implemented at the metro project Cityringen in Copenhagen (Denmark). We want to highlight the specific role and tasks of the used tunnel information system in the project, and particularly inform on the most relevant challenges."

Both Mines operate in the Pittsburgh Seam, primarily producing Metallurgical Fuel destined for by-product ovens in the Pittsburgh District. INTRODUCTION Effective mine ventilation is required to maintain a healthy underground environment for humans. Without effective ventilation, the environment can become unhealthy or hazardous as a result of the depletion of oxygen, contamination with toxic gases, or the buildup of an excessive amount of particulate matter (dust). Each contaminant has an upper limit of concentration that should not be exceeded within an 8-hr period. This is known as the threshold limit value (TLV). The TLV represents an acceptable level of exposure that should produce no ill effects. Unfortunately, more than one contaminant may be present at any one time and the effects of the individual contaminants may be additive, i.e., the effects of each contaminant must be considered simultaneously to determine the potential danger to miners. Possibly the greatest threat to mine-air quality is the uncontrolled underground use of the diesel engine. The diesel engine was invented in 1892 by Rudolf Diesel. His intention was to develop a power source that could burn coal dust as a fuel, but he was unsuccessful in that attempt and had to resort to liquid petroleum fuels (Johnson, 1975). In 1898, the diesel engine was intro¬duced into the United States by Adolphus Busch, who anticipated using it as a prime mover in factories and generating plants. At that time, the diesel engine was a very large and very heavy engine, designed for fixed installations. By 1919, lighter engines were being developed, and by 1931, Caterpillar was marketing a diesel-powered, track-type tractor (Henderson, 1975). Since 1931, the diesel engine has evolved into an extremely popular prime mover in medium and heavy-duty applications. Efficiencies now are on the order of 40% and improvements such as turbocharging and aftercooling have produced engines capable of generating power at a ratio of 0.3 kW/kg (1.0 hp per 5.0 lb) of engine weight. Although the diesel engine is relatively efficient as a mobile power plant, it is far from efficient in terms of the energy produced from the energy potential of the fuel. About 60% of the heat value of the fuel leaves the engine as wasted heat, with about 50% of that heat being emitted through the exhaust pipe and the other 50% being emitted through the radiator or cooling fins. Perfect combustion in an engine would produce only water vapor (H_0), carbon dioxide (CO_), and nitro¬gen (N2) as the byproducts. Since the diesel is not a perfect engine, each pound of fuel burned generates 5.6 m° (200 cu ft) of exhaust gas, containing about 0.009 m3 (0.33 cu ft) of carbon monoxide (CO), 0.009 m' (0.33 cu ft) of nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2, and NOD), and 0.57 m3 (20 cu ft) of carbon dioxide. The balance of the exhaust emission consists of free nitrogen and water vapor (Hurn, 1975). Contrary to popular belief, the diesel is not inherently dirty. Under normal operating conditions, a well-maintained engine neither smokes nor smells. However, the same well-maintained engine can and does produce toxic emissions. A diesel engine is not inherently safe and constitutes a distinct hazard to personnel. This chapter is devoted to a description of the various toxic substances that may be generated by a diesel engine. Although some of these substances may also be produced by blasting or natural causes, the focus of this chapter is on the relationship between the internal- combustion compression-ignition engine (the diesel) and the quality of the mine air. CARBON MONOXIDE Combustion Process During the combustion process (burning) of organic fuels, each atom of carbon combines with two atoms of oxygen, provided that a surplus of oxygen atoms is available. Thus, the carbon is oxidized to carbon dioxide. Most open flames, such as trash fires, camp fires, gas ranges, etc., produce carbon dioxide. However, with insufficient oxygen, incomplete combustion results as the carbon atoms each combine with one atom of oxygen to produce toxic carbon monoxide. Burning charcoal briquettes produce carbon monoxide because the combustion takes place inside the briquettes where sufficient oxygen is not available to the combustion process. Internal-combustion engines, whether burning gasoline or diesel fuel, also produce carbon monoxide. The only oxygen available to the combustion process is that trapped within the cylinder. If the amount of fuel delivered to the cylinder is excessive, there is insufficient oxygen for complete combustion and carbon monoxide production results. In a normally aspirated (nonturbocharged) diesel engine, the amount of air "sucked" into a cylinder is the same on every intake stroke, resulting in complete combustion only at low levels of engine loading, when small amounts of fuel are injected. Higher levels of engine loading cause larger amounts of fuel to be injected into the same volume of air in the cylinder. Unless the volume of air is increased, the combustion process becomes progressively less complete as the amount of fuel increases. Turbocharged engines are able to compensate some¬what for increased loading and increased fuel consumption. The turbocharger acts as a compressor for the intake air, forcing a larger volume of air into the cylinders as the engine speed increases. Hence the turbocharged engine burns cleaner than a naturally aspirated engine and produces slightly less carbon monoxide (Marshall and Fleming, 1971). Much of the underground equipment used today is powered by turbocharged indirect-injection diesel engines. Although these engines emit fewer toxic contaminants than naturally aspirated engines, they do not eliminate the problem. Since the turbocharger is driven by the exhaust gases, rapid accelerations can cause temporary overfueling of the engine until the turbocharger attains a speed sufficient to restore the correct air-to-fuel ratio. During this "turbocharger lag," the combustion cylinders contain insufficient oxygen, causing severe smoking and an increased output of carbon monoxide.

In reviewing available vacuum filtration equipment in this paper, several types of filters have been included which are probably not familiar to operators in the mining industry. However, it was felt that these units might be of interest in the event that an application should arise for the filtration of a product in the future that does not exist today. In addition, exposure of our industry to equipment used in other industries might have a tendency to be thought provoking and perhaps lead to the development of equipment and/or applications in our industry which do not necessarily exist at this time. Most innovations in filtration equipment have been confined to the improvement or design change of components and accessories, particularly reflecting the availability of materials of construction that have been developed. Recent developments in the application of horizontal belt filters have been innovative. The application of this unit as a substitute for or an adjunct to thickeners in a CO circuit can certainly be innovative and perhaps provide a basis for reduction in capital and operating costs in this area. For example, mill tails are generally pumped at the highest possible density that will adequately flow. Tailings ponds and dams with their attendant design requirements are based upon this estimated water volume. Availability of a much dryer, non-flowing filter cake opens up several new options for disposal. Considerable cost savings could result in the design and planning of disposal areas for containing dryer material. . No attempt has been made in this paper to provide a manual for the operation of all of the many types of equipment that are available. Rather, the paper tries to present an overview.

Personnel at Utah Copper Division's Bingham Canyon Mine use current computing technology to compile pertinent production statistics and mining plans. Within hours after the day's work has been completed, concise reports summarizing the previous day's production statistics, actual production vs. budget statistics, the location of shovels relevant to the mining plan, the performance of equipment, equipment next scheduled for maintenance, etc. are available at the terminals located throughout the mine. Also, engineering personnel us e computerized systems, directly from their offices, to assist them in the timely development of mining plans. Timely and concise reporting and planning capabilities such as these assist mine personnel in their efforts to review mining progress and equipment performance, and as such they are in a better position to detect adverse trends early and to seek appropriate resources or make changes in plans or practices.

Heap leach mining has long been an economical method for mining oxide copper ore, and with the U.S. Bureau of Mines' discovery of a way to economically strip gold and silver from carbon, it has become the standard in the gold and silver indus­try as well. Sulfide leach in copper recovery has always been a byproduct of oxide leach mining, although the methods and recovery rates have increased with technology. SX-EW has kindled a new interest in large deposits and dormant dumps of low grade sul­fide ore. Gold ore bio-oxidation was developed in the 1980's, but not tried on a large scale until US Gold built the Tonkin Springs Mine. This mine was dedicated to the large scale production of low grade sulfide ore that could be recovered through the newly discovered bio-oxidation method. On a small scale the method worked, but as time went on, problems with the process were costly and recovery was poor. US Gold did not have the finan­cial backing to perfect the process, and the mine was closed in 1990. Since that time, Newmont Gold Company has taken the lead and has dedicated a lot of resources to the perfection and implementation of this method. Some small mines have discov­ered that if they can use this technology they may be able to dou­ble and triple current ore reserves, because they will be able to mine deposits previously considered not to be economical.

Optimisation of many oxide gold processing facilities, in most cases, either does not really take place or if it does take place it happens too late or takes too long. This is unf01tunate as extra profits and early cash flows are lost, in new projects, and/or may not be realised at all in others. The situation is easily avoid­ed by ensuring that the plant optimisation happens immediately following commissioning or for an established operation simply 'biting the bullet' and making it happen immediately as a 'better late than never' decision. This type of optimisation requires intense undiluted focus on each and every problem or restriction that contributes to reduced plant performance or bottlenecks, without letting go, until the predetermined outcome is produced. Thus a dedicated person with specific quantative goals is required for these tasks. Methodology and strategies for optimi­sation are discussed and numerous examples presented. The secret of successful heap leaching is discussed.

There is a need for direct tailpipe sampling of diesel vehicles in mines in order to determine the effects of an emissions-based maintenance program, evaluate control technologies such as diesel particulate filters and identify the worst diesel particulate matter (DPM) emitters in a fleet of vehicles. therefore, this study examined the performance of three portable instruments: a personal dust monitor (PDM) manufactured by thermo Scientific, a prototype elemental carbon monitor (Airtec) manufactured by FLIr and a prototype Ae91 instrument from Magee Scientific. These instruments were evaluated on the basis of their ability to provide direct reading tailpipe analysis for DPM. It was determined that the average bias of the tailpipe results from the PDM and the Airtec were 3±12% and 4±20%, respectively, when compared to the standard method of determining tailpipe particulate concentrations from a diluted exhaust. It was also determined that the Ae91 instrument correlated with the standard method.
