Large scale surface mining has a major impact on land use. Without reclamation, abandoned mining sites are usually less productive than before mining. With increasing and completetive land use demands in the United States, it becomes increasingly evident that multiple land use should be considered for all areas that will be mined, with special emphasis on coal, sand, gravel, and stone. The mining of these commodities affects the largest land areas and the latter two are commonly mined near population centers where high land-use pressures justify serious consideration of multiple use. Typically, sequential use will mean restoration of the mined land or at least transformation of the land into a useable state. Determination of land reclamation capability is a viable approach to planning reclamation of surface mined land. The natural resource base--geology, soil, and water--controls the type and intensity of land-use practices which can be sustained following mining. Evaluating physical limitations can eliminate consideration of uses which would severely impair the environment or which are impractical. This approach provides for an environmentally and economically sound land use at very little cost. In addition, it can save or make money for the mining company and landowner. Sand and gravel is an especially significant resource because it is mined throughout the entire country and commonly extracted near cities. Increasing urban growth and industrial activity require increased supplies of sand and gravel. This translates into expanded surface mining and an increase of disrupted land. Oftentimes this land is within an urban area and has potential for real estate or water-based activities. "To explore blast furnace slag as a secondary resource for rare earth elements (REEs), blast furnace slag containing lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), erbium (Er) and neodymium (Nd) in concentrations of 17, 16, 4 and 44 ppm, respectively, was processed with sulfuric acid while optimizing the parameters of acid concentration, temperature and pulp density. The experiments showed that recovery rates of 92, 36, 35 and 52 percent for La, Ce, Nd and Er, respectively, were achieved at 1 to 5 weight/volume (w/v) percent pulp density using particles smaller than 250 µm and treating with 1 M sulfuric acid for one hour at room temperature. Raising the temperature to 95 °C promoted the dissolutions of Ce and Nd to 89 and 84 percent, respectively, for the same 1 M acid concentration and one-hour duration at 5 w/v percent pulp density. Cyanex 923 was preferred over Cyanex 301 for the purification of REEs from leach liquor. In another route, the leach liquor was subjected to precipitation with 0.5 to 1 M oxalic acid, resulting in a product with 4 to 5 percent concentration of REEs.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) are important materials in numerous high-technology applications, but they have high supply risk, giving rise to the study of new sources. The recycling of REEs has been well researched, especially on a small scale, but has not been widely implemented. Less than 1 percent of REEs were recycled in 2011 (Binnemans et al., 2013). REEs occur in a large number of minerals in oxidic compounds, such as oxides, carbonates, phosphates and silicates, and are present as mixtures at 10 to 300 mg/kg concentrations in many rock formations, such as basalts, granites, gneisses, shales and silicate rocks. The most abundant REE in the Earth’s crust is cerium (Ce), at a concentration of 20 to 70 mg/kg, followed by neodymium (Nd) and lanthanum (La), with heavier REEs being less abundant (Binnemans et al., 2013). Working with junior mining companies as a valuer, my experience with regulators is that simplicity works and the sales comparison method is the way to go. What I like about Mr. Ellis?s approach (as in his Table 7) is the integration of commodity prices with the timing of acquisitions and the implication of price changes in gold on the adjustment of individual project valuations. However, the sample gold-related appraisals in Ellis?s paper are pre-2008 transactions and readers should be made aware of the current market for such projects. Before moving on, to be noted is that the effective date of the Las Brisas appraisal (Ellis?s sample Appraisal 3) is Feb. 10, 2006; given that the subject value of Transaction 9, Choco 10 in Ellis?s Table 6 was listed as $353 million for a 95% interest in the con-cession, I am uncomfortable accepting that the acquisition was suddenly worth the adjusted value of $1,205 million (as given in Ellis?s Table 7). In some cases, illiquidity discounts can apply, and commodity-wise, in the one-month period between the acquisition in January 2006 and the adjustment to the Las Brisas conditions as of February 10, 2006, the indicated gold price change was only 41 cents/g ($12.60/oz); i.e., from $17.50/g to $17.91/g ($544.40/oz to $557/oz).

"Twin Creeks is a gold mining complex that is part of Newmont’s Nevada operations. The mining complex is composed of two openpits, Mega and Vista, external ore sources and a set of existing stockpiles, all of which provide ore for an autoclave, an oxide mill and a heap leach. Mega pit provides sulfide ore for the autoclave, whereas Vista pit provides oxide ore for the oxide mill and the heap leach. Both pits operate the same mining equipment and their extraction sequence must, therefore, be optimized simultaneously. Stringent blending requirements are associated with the operation of the autoclave for the sulfide ore. Strategic blending optimization on a large scale has brought significant value to the operation by increasing synergies. This paper presents the implementation of a stochastic optimization framework for the long-term production planning at Twin Creeks that simultaneously optimizes mining, stockpiling, blending and processing decision variables. The uncertainty and variability associated with the different sources of material are incorporated in the optimization model by means of stochastic simulations. The stochastic solution generated shows substantial benefits by increasing forecasted recoverable gold, leading to increased cash flows, while reducing the risk of not achieving forecasts by increasing the probabilities of meeting production and blending targets.IntroductionMine operations consist of multiple components such as mineral deposits, stockpiles, external sources, mills and autoclaves. These components represent a mineral value chain, also known in the literature as a mining complex (Montiel and Dimitrakopoulos 2015; Goodfellow and Dimitrakopoulos 2016). The material extracted from the mines flows through the different components and is transformed into sellable products. This flow of material in a mineral value chain involves complex, nonlinear transformations that render the use of industry-standard optimizers difficult. Furthermore, the optimization of a mining complex can be formulated as a mixed-integer, nonlinear optimization program with millions of integer variables representing mining, blending, stockpiling and processing decisions, prohibiting the use of conventional nonlinear optimization approaches. Previous methods that consider the joint optimization of multiple components of the mineral value chain are available (Hoerger, Seymour and Hoffman, 1999; Chanda, 2005; Stone et al., 2005; Wooller, 2005; Whittle, 2007, 2010; Bodon et al., 2010). Although these methods add value by increasing the synergy between the different components of the mining complex, they rely on simplifying assumptions that constrain their efficacy, while ignoring a most critical aspect. The latter aspect includes the geological uncertainty and actual variability of the materials in the mineral deposits mined and are supplied to the related mineral value chain, similarly to conventional life-of-mine planning methods used for individual mines (Dimitrakopoulos, Farrelly and Godoy, 2002; Godoy and Dimitrakopoulos, 2011; Spleit and Dimitrakopoulos, 2017). Additional simplifying assumptions may include: the consideration of a limited number of components, the combination of different methods, the aggregation of variables, fixed production schedules the definition of policies prior to optimization, such as cutoff- grade definition or destination of mining blocks, the linearization of nonlinear transformation functions and/or the disregard for the uncertainty of several critical parameters (Whittle, 2007). The simultaneous optimization of multiple components of a mining complex was introduced by Newmont. Hoerger, Seymour and Hoffman (1999) implemented a mixed-integer programming formulation to optimize Newmont’s Nevada operations. This session has been organized to suggest to you that the development of direct reduction is important to the iron ore mining and coal mining industries. The papers presented this morning will include a discussion of the costs of making direct reduced iron (DRI), the iron ore and coal supplies needed to produce DRI, the financing of direct reduction (DR) projects and, probably most important, the impact of the DR development on the iron ore and coal industries. For starters, this opening presentation offers a brief statement about DR practice and DRI, under the title that should surprise no one: "Direct Reduction: What Is It?" There is always the chance? that a brief statement may become long and complicated. But, by mixing some slides borrowed from Hal Lownie with a larger number of photographs accumulated from other sources, I hope to avoid such pitfalls.

The underground mining evolution for block cave mines in Chile and worldwide has made important strides in the last decades. Nonetheless, reserves determination in the initial stages of these types of projects—mainly for long-term planning—is not studied in as much detail as it should be, especially regarding the impact on the final value of the enterprise. Today, the first estimation of the size of a block cave mine, typically expressed in tons, tends to determine very large footprints and ore bodies. The resulting large-scale mine is obtained by applying the marginal cut-off grade (COG) to determine reserves. Yet, in many cases, it is possible to obtain an equal or higher benefit, extracting fewer reserves in less time, with a smaller active area, which significantly reduces the project’s uncertainty. To explore scenarios obtained by applying a higher marginal COG in the initial phases of the project, the Hill of Value methodology is used to estimate the net present value (NPV) in relation to the production rate and the COG. However, the application of this methodology considers certain simplifications that generate results which are not completely satisfactory in specific cases. This paper suggests an improvement of this method to obtain more reliable results regarding determination of a COG profile that will optimize the NPVof a block-cave project. The methodology was developed and applied in a massive polymetallic deposit with zinc, lead, and silver mineralization, corresponding to a real block caving project. The methodology provides NPV results that differ by approximately 15% in comparison to the real mine plan, while also being considerably simpler and faster to calculate. In summary, the proposed methodology provides a reasonable and fast procedure to estimate higher than marginal COG that increases the NPV of block cave mine projects.

A ventilation research study was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and a cooperating trona mine in the Green River basin of Wyoming, USA. The mine operation uses the longwall mining method in trona bed 17, a commonly mined unit in the region. The longwall face length is 228 m (750 ft), and caving on the face occurred up to the back of the longwall shields. The mine is ventilated using a main blowing fan and a bleeder shaft. For this study, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas was released in two separate monitoring experiments. For the first experiment, tracer gas was released on the face, this test focused on airflow along the longwall face of the active panel. Face test showed the airflow patterns to be more complex than just head-to-tail flow in the main ventilation air stream on the active panel. For the second experiment, tracer gas was released 2 crosscuts inby the face on the headgate side, this test focused on gas transport in the mined-out portion of the same active panel. Gob test showed a pathway of movement through the front of the active panel gob that moved outby from the tailgate corner. The primary pathway of tracer gas movement in the active panel gob was towards the headgate and tailgate bleeders and out of a bleeder shaft. The rate of movement towards the back of the gob was measured to be 0.19 m/s (37 fpm).

"The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), a concept that combines sensor networks and control systems, has been employed in several industries to improve productivity and safety. U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are investigating IIoT applications to identify the challenges of and potential solutions for transferring IIoT from other industries to the mining industry. Specifically, NIOSH has reviewed existing sensors and communications network systems used in U.S. underground coal mines to determine whether they are capable of supporting IIoT systems. The results show that about 40 percent of the installed post-accident communication systems as of 2014 require minimal or no modification to support IIoT applications. NIOSH researchers also developed an IIoT monitoring and control prototype system using low-cost microcontroller Wi-Fi boards to detect a door opening on a refuge alternative, activate fans located inside the Pittsburgh Experimental Mine and actuate an alarm beacon on the surface. The results of this feasibility study can be used to explore IIoT applications in underground coal mines based on existing communication and tracking infrastructure.IntroductionThe U.S. approach to health and safety in mining has historically been reactive in the sense that health and safety regulations and mandates have traditionally been passed as a result of tragic mining accidents. An example of this is the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006, which was passed as a result of several mining accidents where tracking of and communication with underground personnel were severely limited. While this reactive approach has led to the development and implementation of highly impactful safety interventions and safety practices, there exists a technological revolution that can shift the paradigm toward a proactive approach based on preventative methods: Internet of Things (IoT).IoT is the network of physical objects, or “things,” embedded with electronics, sensors and connectivity to enable that network to achieve greater value and service by exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected devices (Atzori, Iera and Morabito, 2010; Gubbi et al. 2013). It should be noted that IoT has been defined from various perspectives, and hence numerous definitions exist in the literature. The apparent ambiguity of the IoT definition might be due to the fact that IoT is syntactically composed of two terms: the Internet and things. The first word pushes toward a network-oriented vision, while the second tends to put the focus on generic objects. The traditional Internet can be viewed as an internet of computers, so things connected to the Internet are computers only. IoT extends the internet by allowing other generic things that are commonly found in daily life, such as refrigerators and cars, to be interconnected through the Internet, thus creating a bridge between the virtual world and the physical world"

This paper proposes a framework for applying surrogate-based approaches to evaluate SEM construction, which can both benefit the uncertainty analysis in the design stage and real-time calibration during the construction process. The performances of four surrogate modeling approaches, namely back-propagation neural network (BPNN), support vector regression (SVR), random forest (RF), and polynomial chaos expansions combined with Kriging (PCK), were evaluated and compared. A variance-based global sensitivity analysis (GSA) was performed on the surrogate predictor to quantify the impacts of geotechnical parameters on the deformation responses induced by SEM tunneling. The Regional Connector Crossover Cavern project constructed in Downtown Los Angeles was set as the benchmark problem to demonstrate the efficiency and reliability of the proposed procedure.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) Purple Line Extension Section 1 (PLE1) is a $3.12 billion USD design-build, underground heavy rail project, connecting an existing station at Wilshire Blvd. and Western Ave. and extending 3.92 miles under Wilshire Blvd, terminating approximately 550 feet west of Wilshire and La Cienega Blvds. The project alignment runs immediately adjacent to the La Brea Tar Pits, world renowned for Pleistocene fossils and continuous seepage of asphaltum (locally known as tar) and gas in an urban setting. This paper presents a successful case history of the planning, design, and construction efforts to safely construct the bored tunnels through Reach 3 of the alignment (between Wilshire/Fairfax Station, and Wilshire/La Cienega Station), in a designated Methane Zone in the City of Los Angeles. Historical context on decades of challenges and studies is summarized. Further, this paper outlines the pro-active partnership between the Owner: LA Metro, the Design Builder: Skanska-Traylor-Shea Joint Venture, and geotechnical design services provided by Golder Associates to safely manage pressurized face tunneling through a confined gas zone near the La Brea Tar Pits. Specifically, a program of in-situ oxidation and soil gas extraction was designed to test and analyze risks associated with pressurized face TBM tunneling through the complex subsurface geological conditions, then implemented during construction. In advance of tunneling, a network of wells was used to draw air into the gas zone to oxidize the 6,500 ppm hydrogen sulfide gas, as well as determine methane recharge rate. During TBM tunneling, the wells were converted to a gas extraction system to evacuate, filter (H2S) and burn (CH4) the gas as the Tunnel Boring Machine passed, providing a preferential pathway for the gas to migrate toward extraction wells, and preventing the migration to adjacent buildings. The team extracted and treated 3,857,000 cubic feet of mostly methane gas over 40 days as the TBMs passed through the zone. Gas behavior, pressures, and concentrations were monitored not only from the extraction system, but also in basements and utility vaults along this section of the alignment.

Buckhorn ore is hydrous, argillized basaltic andesite, and is at least 60% clay composed of kaolinite and subordinate montmorillonite. Moisture content runs from 10% to 25%. The original crushing plant was a typical compression type, employing a jaw crusher, and two cone crushers. The system was plagued with constant plugging and unable to meet production plans. The three compression crushers were replaced with a Stamler Feeder Breaker followed by a Hazemag Impactor. Production plans are now exceeded. Agglomeration has progressed from an agglomeration drum to cascading conveyors, to introduction of the lime and cement into the primary crusher.

The aim of this paper is to assess the effect of microwave treatment on copper sulfide ore for ball milling and bed breakage. Liberation analysis of ground products in eight size fractions showed that microwave pretreatment liberated more chalcopyrite particles from the bed breakage product than the ball mill product. In bed breakage, microwave pretreatment caused a 2% increase in chalcopyrite liberation on average. Microwave pretreatment produces more elongated particles in ball milling and more rounded particles in bed breakage, respectively. Microwave pretreatment produces coarser chalcopyrite particles with a wide range of sizes. This effect is more significant in bed breakage compared with ball milling. Micro-flotation test results showed that in ball milling, treated and untreated materials have similar metallurgical performance and there is a little difference (1%) between the average Cu recovery values. However, in bed breakage, the average recovery for the treated materials is about 5% higher than the untreated materials.

In a shearer longwall mining operation, the longwall bits are responsible for breaking into and chip-ping the broken coal blocks away from the coal face. However, underground observations have found that a large number of longwall bits are always working under various degrees of wear. Reduction of the bit wear could be realized by using better designed longwall bits and properly selected shearer operating parameters. A computer program has been developed to simulate the performance of the longwall bits. The shape of the bit head, the installation of the bits on the drum and the operation parameters are the information required by the program. Through the simulations, the main factors affecting the bit wearing process are identified. Suggestions are also made for improving the design of the longwall bits.

Tailings are made of ground rock that is left over from removing valuable minerals. The tailings are usually fine particles that cause environmental issues for storage and disposal. Disposal of tailings is a growing concern, as more tailings are produced from the increasing demand for mined material (ITRC, 2008). This project proposes a way to convert the mine waste to a useful product. Tailings were selected from a South Carolina crushed stone quarry, the products of which are used for road beds, sidewalks, asphalt and driveways. These tailings were processed to generate synthetic aggregates for construction applications. The synthetic aggregate creates a product that could be used for many purposes, including aggregate for sidewalks, driveways, roads and building materials. Testing methods followed the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) guidelines for physical testing of coarse natural aggregate, which are sieve analysis, Los Angeles abrasion, absorption, specific gravity and soundness test. The synthetic aggregate produced passed all tests for NCDOT and, in some instances, rated better than a natural aggregate. Using the tailings from the crushed stone and mining industry would convert the waste into a valuable, marketable product.

A patent issued to J.N.J. Leeman (1957) described the change in performance that takes place when a cyclone is installed in the horizontal position rather than the vertical position. Although this patent was directed more toward improvements that could be realized in the heavy medium cleaning of coal, it contained specific references to reducing the quantity of fine solids that would report in the underflow, and an example for fine sand classification is also included. The three cyclone installations for which data is given in this paper demonstrate that horizontal mounting of large cyclones can improve classification efficiency, eliminate some operational difficulties, and reduce cyclone maintenance requirements in closed circuit grinding installations. Cyclone Experience at Serrana S.A. Each of four grinding circuits at the Serrana S.A. de Mineracao Apatite flotation plant in Brazil have a 2.7 X 4.6 meter (9 X 15 foot) rod mill and each originally operated in closed circuit with two vertically mounted Model D20B (500m nominal diameter) Krebs Cyclones. New feed size is 25mm. The Apatite is liberated at a relatively coarse 35 to 28 mesh grind, but the 500mm cyclones had to be fed at 66 pct. solids in order to obtain an overflow analyzing 12 pct. coarser than 42 mesh. Because dilution water in the cyclone feed had to be limited, classification was inefficient, and there were other significant circuit difficulties as summarized in a recent article by C. A. Busnardo (1984):

This paper highlights the use of an innovative mine production scheduling scheme for grade-control planning tasks that take into consideration grade-model uncertainty. The scheduling exercise has been carried out with the help of a multiobjective genetic algorithm (MOGa) for the production scheduling operations. The underlying motive behind the use of MOGa has been the generation of a set of pareto optimal solutions to meet the goals of the target-grade specifications for the considered multiple grade attributes. Several new concepts related to MOGa formulation, in particular the mutation operation and the convergence criteria of this algorithm, are proposed in this paper. The modeling of grade uncertainty into the scheduling outputs has also been incorporated through a set of conditional simulated grade maps. The proposed scheme of production scheduling operations has been applied for the grade-control planning operations in an iron ore mine to meet the targeted grade specifications of iron, silica and alumina, and a risk analysis has been performed to this end.

Treatment of plant effluent including waste water and associated soluble and insoluble substances, is of a primary concern of many process industries including mineral processing operations. The major objective of such treatment is the removal of such impurities which can interfere with the process through the use of recycled water, and/or to comply with environmental ordinances. For example, Ramirez and Clements (1978) state that molybdenum contents in the range of 19 mg/1 eventually poison ion exchange resigns used for the extraction of uranium. In addition, recent restrictions by the EPA on molybdenum discharge values for mining waste water necessitate removal of this metal to (0.5-1.0 mg/1).

An operating problem encountered at the Moa Bay operation in Cuba, where nickeliferous laterite ore is processed by sulfuric acid pressure leaching, is the formation of alunite and hematite deposits on the autoclave walls. The AMPX Extractive Research & Development, Inc., metallurgical laboratory (Golden, Colorado) has made substantial improvements in the Moa Bay process in the areas of metal recovery, energy consumption, and feed versatility. One of the advantages of AMAX's process is its ability to treat substantial portions of nickel- and magnesium-rich serpentine while maintaining acid utilization efficiency. The process minimizes scale formation by combining staged acid addition with vigorous agitation and 270°C operation, but does not eliminate scaling. This paper describes how advantage can be taken of MgSO4?XH20 precipitation both to inhibit alunite scaling and to disperse hematite scale within the MgSO4?XH20 matrix. Cooling the autoclave from its 270°C operating temperature down to 180°C takes advantage of the reverse solubility of magnesium sulfate. The magnesium dissolves, liberating entrained hematite, thus providing a means for control of autoclave scale with minimum process disruption.

Autogenous grinding, broadly defined as the self-comminution of ore in a cylindrical tumbling mill without using auxiliary grinding media, was first applied in the early thirties in the so-called Hadsel mills (Figure 1) mainly used in gold mines on the U.S. West Coast. A number of these mills were built in sizes of 20 to 24 ft. in diameter and five-six feet in length but were later abandoned because of operating and maintenance problems. Further development of autogenous grinding led to the Hardinge wet grinding mill (Figure 2), the Aerofall dry grinding mill and others. A tabulation of all known autogenous and semi-autogenous installations around the world was sent recently to the authors by Hr. G. J. Kushner of the Koppers Mineral Processing Division. In the size range of 24 to 32-ft. in diameter, it lists a total of thirty mills used in the processing of copper ores. An additional 120 units are listed in the same size range for the processing of iron ores and other minerals. The largest mills in existence are 36-ft. dia X 15-ft. long mills in Minnesota, powered by 12,000 hp. motors and used in taconite beneficiation. It is indicative of the phenomenal growth of this technology that none of the above one hundred and fifty mills was in operation prior to 1964.

This work is a first-order study to assess the suitability of an organic acid lixiviant to extract rare earth elements (REE) from coal preparation fines refuse sourced from a Pennsylvania mine with a total REE of ~ 300 ppm. The extraction of REE using an organic acid, in this case 0.1Mcitric acid and 0.5Mtrisodium citrate solution, is compared against 0.5M(NH4)2SO4, 1MHCl, 1.2MH2SO4, and 0.5Methylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Ashing the coal waste material prior to leaching tests with the citrate solution nominally improved REE extraction. Buffered citrate solution recovered 7% of the total REE in the as-received Isabella Fines as compared to 11% in ashed samples, whereas (NH4)2SO4 extracted 5–6%, respectively. EDTA recovered up to 33%of the total REE, most likely due to the higher coordination chelate bond. Mineral acids, however, outperformed the organic acids on ashed material (16–52%REE recovery), suggesting that organic acids may not be a suitable competitive option for REE extraction from these types of feedstocks.
