The emerging problem of electronic waste has promoted the interest in exploring metal recovery from secondary sources under the umbrella of urban mining. This study presents the physical and chemical characterization of various components present in end-of-life laptops to help ascertain the sites of metallic values and develop sustainable and environment-friendly recycling. The recycling potential of a laptop is evaluated by sequential disassembly, separation, and characterization of components such as body (49.8 wt.%), printed circuit board (9.7 wt.%), hard disk drive (4.9 wt.%), and battery (12.4 wt.%). The printed circuit boards comprise metallic values, majorly copper (25 wt.%), tin (5.8 wt.%), and lead (3.1 wt.%). The precious metals (Au, Ag) with an economic advantage are abundantly present in electronic components such as integrated circuits, capacitors, resistors, and processors. Critical elements such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements are detected in the discarded laptops' batteries and hard disk drives. The recycling potential representing the amount of material that can be recycled in various components, depending on the type, concentration, and purity, is determined in the range of 36–100%. On average, a unit laptop contains~ 386 g of Cu (14.45 wt. %), 49.73 g Co (1.86 wt. %), ~346 mg Ag, ~141.2 mg Au, ~650 mg of rare earth elements (Nd, Dy). This study presents a database for investigating integrated and economical recycling techniques from different components of a laptop, and an overall process flow is also proposed.

The underground industry is challenged by many complex technical and non-technical issues and risks. The most obvious of these are the traditional technical issues that we usually try to address with risk management techniques. However, there are many other non-technical risks that our projects face on a daily basis which we often fail to fully recognize or appreciate. This paper addresses some of the less-technical broad-based risks in order to put them into perspective with the technical risks we face day to day in underground planning, design and construction. The good news is that Risk Management techniques are not always about bad things. For obvious reasons Risk Management is always thought of in terms of the ?downside? of risk (i.e., the identification and mitigation of things that can go wrong). On the contrary, there is an ?upside? of things that might go better than expected. Fortunately, if a deliberate effort is made, the same principles and techniques that our industry uses in Risk Management can be applied toward identifying and quantifying the Opportunities and Benefits that might occur. In this way, the process of conducting risk management programs can not only identify the downside risk but can be used to identify and direct projects to take advantage of the upside of uncertainty (i.e., Opportunities as they arise). This beneficial aspect of risk management programs will be highlighted in this paper together with the importance of the non-technical issues.

The present work is concerned with selective dissolution of niobium from Gabal El Faliq concentrate sample by using fluoridefree process. The chemical analysis of concentrate sample revealed the presence of high amount of ZrO2, Nb2O5, Re2O3, and HfO2 assaying 33.6, 1.99, 4.8, and 1.2%w/w respectively. Several economic minerals including zircon, samarskite, fergusonite, and xenotimewere recorded in the studied sample. About 98%of Nb content was selectively dissolved at the optimumconditions of 1:2 concentrate sample: KOH weight ratio, 2.5 h fusion time, and fusion temperature of 550 °C. Organic solvent extraction process using Aliquat 336S in xylene was effectively used for preparing pure Nb2O5 (98.95%).

ZJ 201 (modified starch) is a non-toxic, odorless, and biodegradable polymeric depressant, which selectively depressed galena in batch flotation tests while chalcopyrite was not significantly affected. In a plant trial, copper-lead separation was successful for the first time without using dichromate. Moreover, the plant process could be changed to sequential Cu-Pb flotation using ZJ 201 for higher grade lead concentrate. A copper concentrate was obtained with a Cu grade of 24.91% and a Pb grade of 5.11%, which recovered 76.6% of the copper from the original ore; a lead concentrate was also obtained with a Pb grade of 21.90% and a Cu grade of 5.31%, which recovered 52.6% of the lead. In addition to the effective copper-lead separation observed in the plant trial, another improvement observed is that gold was recovered mostly in copper concentrate, which could be sold for higher prices. Au grade reached 230.64 g/t, and its recovery reached 65.8% in the copper concentrate. Au grade in lead concentrate was only 18.90 g/t.

An industrial minerals review involves an attempt to assemble field and statistical data which are obscure, elusive and incomplete. Often, when me statistical data are available, combining or lumping of commodity values conceals the value of specific items. Personal knowledge of the minerals known to occur in the area of concern, combined with whatever available published data may be compiled, together with careful use of several extrapolation methods, may yield an acceptable summary review of the industry. However, it is particularly hazardous to speculate on future trends and economic aspects because of the many unpredictable variables which may affect the industrial minerals business. Among these variables are the effects of diverse geological conditions, the impact of technological changes (including new uses for minerals not formerly considered industrial types), changing socio-economic factors (including growing environmental controversy), use of substitutes and even recycling of some of the industrial minerals (for example, building materials, lime, etc.). My main objectives are to reveal, as accurately as I can, the state of the in¬dustrial minerals situation, and the effects of possible future developments on this industry in Idaho. Where the words...industrial-tyke minerals, .are used in this discussion, reference is made to selected metallic and nonmetallic minerals and related materials, as well as rock (Table I). Industrial minerals known to be present in Idaho may be listed under general use categories as in Table 1. Some of these commodities are being marketed, have been marketed in the past, or occur in potentially marketable quantities. Mineral fuels are neither mentioned, nor are they considered important in Idaho. Based upon our present knowledge and lack of known, economically valuable occurrences of these commodities, they are considered insignificant (Idaho Bur. Mines and Geology, 1964). Earl C. Herkenhoff Publication of the article "The Flotation Behavior of Digested Asphalt Ridge Tar Sands" by R.J. Smith and J.D. Miller has confirmed and again spotlighted a most significant and important development in the field of tar sand and heavy oil mining. This is the ability to recover 95 % of the bitumen in dry tar sands by a hot water process. The initial investigation by Miller and Sepulveda in early 1978, "Separation of Bitumen from Dry Tar Sands," was the first blockbuter. It is disappointing that there has been so little scientific and industry ackowledgement that the authors laid to rest the long entrenched belief that the sand grains had to be "water wetted" for a hot water process to be applicable. Dr. Miller and his researchers at the University of Utah used slightly different mineral dressing terminology in describing their process but it is essentially the old, established technique of high solids attrition scrubbing at elevated temperatures with a conditioner or modifier, followed by dilution and froth flotation. Similar techniques were described in detail for other nonmetallic minerals in the mid-1940s by Stuart Falconer of American Cyanamid Co. The authors used a 15-minute "scrub" period (or in their terminology "digester step") at 73% solids and 95°C (203°F) in a 0.3 m solution of sodium carbonate -about 4 kg/t (8 lb per st) of tar sand. Flotation was at 10% solids. Obviously, the scrub is an expensive step with respect to energy input but the high recovery of bitumen appears to justify it. Two basic questions then arise: • What are the effects of shorter scrubbing time, lower temperature, and less sodium carbonate? • Would a two-stage approach be advantageous? That is, could you get the major proportion of the bitumen with a mild scrub and apply the high power and temperature only to the refractory portion? These variables should be evaluated. Apparently, all results were only for rougher flotation. What would the grade and recovery of bitumen be if multiple cleaner flotation steps were employed? We must concede that a 60-62% grade of bitumen leaves considerable room for upgrading. Finally, it should be noted by all executives who approve funds for heavy oil recovery schemes, most of which are variations of in-situ methods, that mining can yield a 95% recovery of bitumen. That is correct, 95%. Imagine what that does to the total barrels recovered from a heavy oil resource compared with the scrawny 30-35% maximum recovery we are getting now. Miller We, too, share Mr. Herkenhoff s enthusiasm for the mining of tar sands-heavy oil and continue the development of related processing technology. Specifically, it will be noted that by appropriate control of bitumen viscosity in the feed (probably the most important variable for successful separation) the recovery can be accomplished at low digestion temperature and low addition of alkali. A 91 t/d (100 stpd) pilot plant based on our technology is now being operated by Enercor in Salt Lake City (Hatfield, Oblad, and Miller, 1982). In these same pilot facilities, rougher concentrates containing more than 80% bitumen on a dry basis are being produced from Asphalt Ridge Feed. However, the processing of certain other tar sands results in incomplete digestion of bitumen/sand aggregates as discussed elsewhere (Miller and Misra, 1982). Such undigested aggregates are shown in Fig. 1. In this regard, it is intended that a recycle stream will be installed in the pilot plant to provide for redigestion of middling products. Although salmonid fishes (including Pacific salmon and trout) have only intermediate sensitivity to copper (Cu) for traditional toxicity endpoints (survival, growth, and reproduction) and thus do not ?drive? the freshwater Cu criteria (e.g., see species-sensitivity ranking in US EPA 2007), Cu concentrations as low as 1 to 2 µg/L have been reported to impair olfaction (the sense of smell) in salmonids in laboratory experiments using dilute fresh water (see references in Meyer and Adams 2010 and DeForest et al. 2011). Olfaction is crucial to predator avoidance, recognition of kin, and reproductive synchronization (Baldwin et al. 2003); and Cu is of general ecotoxicological concern because it can be present in acid/mine rock drainage, industrial and municipal effluents, agricultural runoff, and urban stormwater runoff (Meyer et al. 2007). Therefore, there is public concern that the current regulation of Cu in surface waters is not stringent enough to protect salmonid fishes against olfactory impairment (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). Because the toxicity of metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry [e.g., acute toxicity of Cu generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ + Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase; Meyer et al. 2007], hardness-based freshwater criteria for metals are lower at lower water hardness. The recently-developed biotic ligand model (BLM) explicitly takes into account all four of those water chemistry parameters and the concentrations of other major inorganic cations (Na+, K+) and anions (Cl-, SO42-) to predict the acute toxicity of cationic metals (e.g., Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) to aquatic organisms; and the BLM has been adopted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to calculate acute and chronic national freshwater criteria for Cu (US EPA 2007). Consistent with observations of Cu toxicity to aquatic organisms, BLM-based Cu criteria generally are lower at lower pH, water hardness, alkalinity, and DOC concentrations. Therefore, although threshold concentrations for olfactory impairment by Cu can be low in dilute fresh waters, the corresponding hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria for the same waters also tend to be low. This leads to a logical question: Are Cu criteria already protective against impairment of olfaction in salmonid fishes, thus obviating the need to decrease those criteria even lower to protect against adverse effects to this physiological/ecotoxicological endpoint? Herein, we demonstrate that in all studies conducted to date, the US EPA?s BLM-based freshwater Cu criteria would have been protective against olfactory impairment in salmonid fishes, but the US EPA?s hardness-based criteria would not always have been protective. This distinction is important because all 50 States in the USA still use hardness-based Cu criteria in their water quality standards, and only some of the States allow use of the BLM to calculate site-specific Cu criteria. Additionally, in the absence of empirical results for calibration of a saltwater Cu-olfactory model, we demonstrate that a proposed unified freshwater-saltwater Cu-olfactory BLM predicts the US EPA?s current saltwater Cu criteria would be protective against olfactory impairment caused by Cu in sea water.

The purpose of this paper is to provide general information about the bioaccessibility of metals and specific information about the use of bioaccessibility in risk assessments (human health risk assessments [HHRA] or ecological risk assessments [ERA]) and a list of sites where regulatory agencies have approved the use of bioaccessibility data in risk assessment. The memorandum also cites current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) guidance as well as state specific guidance where applicable. BRIEF HISTORY OF METAL BIOACCESSIBILITY TESTING AND METHODS The bioaccessible fraction of a constituent is that fraction that dissolves or desorbs from its matrix (e.g., soil) in the gastrointestinal tract and is available for absorption (USEPA 2007a; ITRC 2011; ITRC 2017). This is different from the bioavailable fraction, which is the percentage of the amount of an element that an organism is exposed to that is absorbed by that organism during a given time under defined conditions (USEPA 2007a). The bioaccessibility factor is the percentage of a metal that is potentially available for absorption and, therefore, is a conservative estimate of the bioavailable fraction since all that is available for absorption may not ultimately be absorbed into the organism’s system. Currently, there are two main techniques for estimating bioavailability of metals within a medium: in vivo animal studies (time-consuming and often cost-prohibitive), and in vitro tests that simulate human, or animal digestion in a laboratory setting. In vitro and in vivo test methods and protocols have been extensively evaluated by numerous researchers (Ruby et al. 1996; Rodriguez and Basta 1999; Sips et al. 1998; Sips et al. 2001; Molly et al 1993; Oomen et al 2002; Kelley et al. 2002; Oomen et al. 2003; Furman et al. 2006; Drexler and Brattin 2007; Basta et al. 2007; Wragg et al. 2009; Wragg et al. 2011; Chaney et al. 2011; Bradham et al. 2015; Bradham et al. 2018). The most recent scientific literature demonstrates that protocols used to estimate the bioavailability of metals to mammals also predict bioavailability of metals to birds as well (Beyer et al., 2016).

A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

The present article reports the recovery of potassium from mica scrap using carbide lime waste and NaCl. The acid leaching of mica [4 M H2SO4 at 90 °C] can recover a maximum of 25% potassium. However, in the chlorination roasting (with CLW and NaCl) water leaching process, it was possible to recover potassium to the tune of 94% [900 °C, 50 min roasting; mica:CLW:NaCl 1:0.75:1]. The formation of water-soluble phase like sylvite (KCl) and water-insoluble phases like anorthite ( CaAl2Si2O8) and nepheline ( NaAlSiO4) confirms the complete breakdown of the mica crystal structure. The extraction mechanism proceeds with the formation of a transition state followed by the release of potassium as KCl. The characterisation studies using ICP-OES, XRD, FTIR and FESEM support the proposed extraction mechanism. The salt produced by the evaporation of roast-leached liquor confirms the presence of sylvite and halite only, which can be separated to get the fertiliser grade KCl.

The symposium was held to update the minerals industry, the health community, government agencies and academia on the technical, health and regulatory aspects of minerals to be evaluated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).In October 1996, the IARC met in Lyon, France, to discuss and prepare “Volume 68 of the IARC Mono-graphs on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans on Silica, Silicates, Dusts and Organic Fibers.”

One of the world’s most successful mining shovel manufacturers believes its name is not very well known in North America, particularly in the United States. And there are plans under way to improve on that. Never mind that it is one of the largest mining shovel manufacturers in the world. Or that the mining division has 800 machines in operation worldwide, 100 of them in the United States. And the company currently holds 30% of market share worldwide and 10% in the United States. Forget about the fact that it has already sold more machines world-wide this year than it did during 1995. None of that is good enough. O&K Mining GmbH Dortmund is the mining division of Germany’s giant O&K Orenstein and Koppel. It is one of three divisions of O&K Orenstein and Koppel AG, a US$1.2-billion company. The other two divisions are construction equipment and escalators. The mining division, though, is one of the company’s most successful.

The Zoro pegmatite project in east-central Manitoba occurs 20 km east of the historic mining town of Snow Lake. A composite sample (Master Comp) was prepared fromthree pegmatite zones within Zoro Dyke “D1” including the North, Central, and South Zones for mineralogical analysis and heavy liquid separation (HLS). The mineralogical examination was conducted on a subsample crushed to ca. P80 of 600 μm to determine the overall mineral assemblage, liberation of spodumene, and assess the potential recovery of spodumene by flotation. XRD and QEMSCAN results show that the sample consists of spodumene (10.5%), quartz (29.3%), plagioclase (29.0%), K-feldspars (21.3%), micas (5.1%), tourmaline (2.9%), and Fe-Mn-phosphates (0.1%). Spodumene is well liberated (88%), but also forms complex particles (7%), and middlings with quartz (4%). Liberation of spodumene increases from 81 in the + 600 μm to 95%in the − 106 μm size fraction. Liberation of quartz, feldspars, and micas account for 89%, 94%, and 83%, respectively. Electron probe micro-analyses and LA-ICP-MS showed that the average Li concentration is 3.7% in spodumene, 2196 ppm in micas, 1001 ppm in tourmaline, and 115 ppm in K-feldspars. Thus, spodumene accounts for 96%, micas 2%, Fe-Mn phosphates 1%, and both K-feldspars and tourmaline for < 1% of the total Li in the sample. The mineralogical data indicate the potential to recover spodumene by flotation with minimal Li losses due to other than spodumene carriers. Heavy liquid separation was conducted on the Master Comp which was crushed to − 6.4 mm, while the − 600 μmfractionwas removed fromthis test. The coarse fraction − 6.4mm/+ 600 μmwas subjected to HLS tests with eight heavy liquid-specific gravity cut-points (2.65 to 3.10 g/cm3). HLS indicates that it is possible to produce a high-grade lithium concentrate (close to 6% Li2O) after the rejection of iron silicates with magnetic separation.

The Y2K or "Millenium" bug is a tiny critter, comprising no more than two digits in a date field. This bug, like its' more lethal cousins of biological and computer virus fame, has the potential to derail the economy of the U.S. and the rest of world. Whatever the reader's perception, rest assured that you will be affected by Y2K along with every person in the civilized world. How did we get to this position? It is really quite simple. The Y2K problem is a creation of computer programmers who, in an effort to conserve valuable memory in the early days of computer development, used two digits as shorthand- to define the year in date sensitive applications. Instead of typing in "1982," our experts employed "82." They believed-correctly­that the problem of limited memory would be solved by technology and assumed (nasty word) that software would be modified to take care of any problems associated with a date rollover in the year 2000. Their assumption resulted in the problem facing us today.

Hydrolyzable surfactants such as fatty acids and amines undergo, in addition to micellisation and precipitation, various associative interactions in aqueous solutions to form ion molecular complexes such as acid-soap, dimers etc. depending upon the solution conditions such as pH. The interaction of these collector species with the mineral surface and with other dissolved species in solution will play a significant role in determining the interfacial processes such as adsorption and flotation. Marked differences in the hydrophobicity imparted to the mineral surface depending upon the solution conditions such as Ph can be attributed to possible differences in surface activities of the above complexes. This aspect of solution chemistry of flotation systems is discussed here for two widely used collectors namely, oleic acid and dodecylamine. Equilibrium species distribution diagrams based on the available literature .data and on estimates of energy of interactions between molecules, have been obtained for oleic acid and dodecylamine solutions.

As a cheap, renewable and non-toxic material, starch can contribute to the sustainability of the flotation process, albeit in a minor way as one type of reagent in systems involving materials with far greater impact. But the physical and chemical versatility of starch can help address another issue, namely, that of processing complex ores with decreasing grades of valuable minerals and increasing mixtures of gangue. This paper compares the results of two lab scale flotation studies where starches (native wheat starch (NWS), dextrin and two oxidised wheat starches) were used to depress two common gangue minerals, copper-activated pyrite and carbon (graphite), over a range of dosages. The oxidised starch with the larger molecular weight structures depressed copper-activated pyrite best, and the oxidised starch with lower molecular weight structures was better at depressing graphite. In both cases, the oxidised starches allowed greater recovery of chalcopyrite, pointing to selectivity potential. The extent to which the carbonyl and carboxyl moieties of the oxidised starches contribute to depressant performance is difficult to quantify, but it should not be discounted. Importantly, the results demonstrate relatively simple modifications of native starch by oxidation can yield structures suitable for depressing gangue minerals with diverse surface properties. The challenge remaining for greater application of modified starch depressants is being able to replicate the desired structures at scale in cold-water-soluble form.

The distribution of phosphate in Pliocene-Miocene deposits of the Southeastern United States was controlled by the prevailing geologic setting. For each basin a unique set of conditions in terms of relationship of land mass to shelf, depositional environment and seawater composition, and movement controlled phosphate distribution. Concentration sufficient to recognize the deposits as a resource occurred in lagoons or shallow neritic zones, with clastics and carbonates diluting the section basinward. Each deposit within a basin displays similar metallurgy and lithology, notwithstanding post-depositional alteration.

"Since 2008, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has required the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines (MSHA, 2008). MSHA requires that RAs provide an environment with breathable air for entrapped miners for a 96-hour period. Heat buildup inside an occupied RA is a serious concern. Without a means to dissipate the heat and humidity generated by the occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system, the temperature and humidity inside RAs could lead to severe discomfort or heat stress depending on the mine ambient temperature before and during occupation of the RA. In its 2006 report, the West Virginia Mine Safety Technology Task Force (2006) recommended an apparent temperature limit of 35 °C (95 °F) for RAs. In Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 7.504, or 30 CFR 7.504, MSHA specifies a maximum apparent temperature of 35 °C (95 °F) inside an occupied RA (MSHA, 2016). The apparent temperature is calculated using both air temperature and relative humidity (Steadman, 1979).Calculations can be used to deter-mine if the air within an occupied RA will reach the apparent temperature limit. In these calculations, the mine temperature could be assumed to re-main constant. With this assumption, the effects of the mine strata thermal mass and thermal conductivity on the heat buildup in an RA are ignored. Re-search conducted by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) shows that the mine air and strata temperatures surrounding an RA increase when subjected to the heat of an occupied RA (Yantek, 2014). Thus, calculations performed with the assumption that the mine temperature is constant would underpredict the resulting dry-bulb temperature and apparent temperature for a given RA occupancy. The mine air temperature has been used as the basis for RA temperature calculations. However, there has been no research to confirm that the mine air temperature is the appropriate basis."

The influence of solution ionic strength (IS) and electrolyte valence on the flotation behavior of malachite has been investigated. The microflotation tests were conducted over a range of solution IS (1?300 mM) at a constant speed (340 rpm), pH (9.5), flotation time (10 min), and sodium oleate dosage (5.3×10-7 moles/g). The size of malachite ranged from 45 to 53 µm, and two different types of electrolytes (NaCl and CaCl2) were employed. Electrophoretic mobility was also measured over the same IS range employed in the microflotation study. Overall, strong coupled effect of solution IS and ion valence was observed. Specifically, the flotability of malachite increased with increasing IS in the presence of monovalent cation (Na+) while the flotability increased up to 30 mM and decreased with increasing IS in the presence of divalent cation (Ca2+). Notably, the flotability of malachite was greater with the presence of Na+ compared with Ca2+ under high IS conditions (IS>30 mM). Consistent trend for Na+ versus Ca2+ was observed from the flotation results with different SO dosages. The characterization and flotation results suggested that the trend was likely attributed to the increased unfavorable interaction between malachite and bubble via the charge reversal of bubbles and malachite at higher IS in the presence of Ca2+.

Copper smelter flue dusts containing arsenic are hazardous materials requiring environmentally accept-able disposal, preferably with re-source recovery under the RCRA and CRCLA regulations. However, the known resource recovery processes entail capital and operating costs greater than can be justified by the revenue of the recovered metal. Consequently, the smelting industry is tending to forego resource recovery in favor of encapsulation and storage in a certified class I hazardous waste site, or in a dedicated facility located at the source Superfund site. Order of magnitude costs for this option with portland cement encapsulation are estimated at $100 per ton, not including transportation. Industrial adoption of a new resource recovery process re-quires that its cost, including capital amortization, exceed the cost of encapsulation and storage only by the amount of the offsetting revenue from sale of metal. The lime-roast/ammoniacal leaching process is expected to meet this goal.
