Advances in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are transforming mining and mineral processing, and making them more algorithm intensive. The paradigm is shifting from one of detection and control to one of prediction and optimisation. To build up reliable prediction and optimisation models these steps should be passed: collect, aggregate, cleanse, and process large amounts of complex, structured, and unstructured data as a first stage. Next, the right tools must be used to extract meaningful features from the operational data for the build-up of a prediction model. A grinding circuit is one of the challenging areas in terms of determining its overall efficiency and the prediction of product quality. In a processing plant, some of the KPIs are typically unmeasurable or infrequently measured for real-time application, e.g. ore grindability and grind size. However, these variables are required to calculate the grinding circuit efficiency and to model the operation performance. In this paper, advanced analytic tools have been used to extract one selected KPI (cyclone overall P80 or final grind size) and its relationship with measured variables for an industrial dataset. The results illustrate that the performance of the grinding circuit can be predicted for real-time monitoring by means of measured data. "The aim of this paper is to enhance the understanding of the nature of mining input technologies in the South African mining industry. In the context of this research, mining inputs refer to input technology into the activities in mining engineering fields, which include mining-related production activities, rock engineering, mine ventilation, and mine transportation (handling of personnel, material, broken rock, and pumping). Input technologies in supporting fields such as geology, other engineering disciplines, human resource, procurement, finance, as well as downstream fields that include metallurgy, and marketing of minerals, were disregarded.The mining input technologies were divided into 12 nodes, and data from a sample of 150 first-tier mining suppliers was analysed. It was found that, in general, there is a high local content in mining input technologies, particularly as regards technical support services, artefacts, and machine technologies. This points to the presence of mining-induced backward linkages in the South African mining industry. The majority (83%) of companies that provide input technologies into mining are located in Gauteng Province, and relatively few are found in provinces where mining is concentrated such as North-West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Free State. IntroductionSouth Africa is well endowed with minerals, with more than fifty different minerals being mined throughout the country. For this and other reasons, mining is one of the crucial pillars in the South African economy and its importance is well documented (Robinson and von Below, 1990; Creamer, 2010; Department of Mineral Resources, 2015). In 2013, South Africa was the largest global producer of chromium, ferrochrome, platinum group metals (PGMs), and vermiculite and the second largest global producer of antimony, manganese, titanium, and vanadium (Chamber of Mines of South Africa, 2014). In 2013, the mining industry contributed 6.7% to South Africa’s GDP and was the fifth largest sector in the economy, as shown in Figure 1."

Surface coal operations in which mining activities are conducted above old underground workings experience hot holes after drilling. In a coal mine, hot holes are defined as shot holes, which after being drilled have an in-hole ambient temperature of 40°C or above or show a temperature increase of 3°C or more during monitoring. Hot holes and other cavities, such as cracks, pose health and safety risks to workers, such as exposure to hot air and high concentrations of noxious gases released from these holes. In addition, workers may be exposed to premature detonation of explosives caused by in-hole temperature increases and chemical reactions. To this end, Coaltech Research Association commissioned a project to develop a Best Practice Guideline for the management of hot holes. This paper is a compilation of the activities conducted in the development of the Best Practice Guideline between 2021 and 2022. The activities included a review of standard operating procedures and hot-hole temperature-measuring and -monitoring devices, and the assessment of current hot-hole procedures at selected mines. The results indicated that management of hot holes requires a focus on pre-emptive risk assessment of mining blocks, identification of hot holes using the correct temperature-measuring devices, and continuous monitoring of hot holes from the time of drilling until just before blasting. Hot-hole management accessories, such as polyvinyl chloride sleeves, were found to be effective in insulating the hot-hole emulsion from the rock mass temperature, thus preventing the potential for premature detonation.

The size of the particle plays an important role in the flotation of minerals. Comminution allows the release of valuable species and their subsequent recovery. Then, the degree of concentration and recovery will depend on the size of the particle. In this work, we investigated the flotation of coarse particles (-850 +150 μm) of copper ores when using the fluidized-bed separator (HydroFloat® cell) and compared it with the process of conventional flotation with medium size particle (-150 μm) (Metso cell) using seawater. In a FeNi electric arc furnace, the physical properties of the slag (chemistry, viscosity, liquid/solid/gas ratio) are of crucial importance in controlling the efficiency of the process. In this paper, we studied the slag crystallised on the walls of a semi-industrial furnace (freeze-lining), the slag rising through the burden during foaming phenomena, and the casted slag. The freeze-lining is the layer of oxides that crystallises on the refractory wall of a furnace, protecting it from chemical and mechanical aggression. It records changes in furnace conditions (slag chemistry, temperature, oxygen fugacity), which makes it possible to observe the impact of these elements. In the high reduction test, the freezing lining is composed of magnesian olivine. Switching to a low reduction process increases the Fe content of the olivine and causes orthopyroxene to appear, making the freeze-lining mechanically and thermally weak. Thermal incidents in the furnace cause significant slag foaming. This foaming is produced by a massive crystallisation of the olivine (due to the drop in temperature), and inducing an exponential increase in viscosity, preventing the free circulation of gases. These foaming episodes are also recorded in the freeze lining and form layers rich in gas bubbles, and therefore mechanically fragile. The slag casted and cooled in a ladle allows the first steps of slag crystallisation to be studied. Olivine is the liquidus phase, with a magnesium-rich core and an iron-enriched rim, contemporaneous with the orthopyroxene phase. The habitus of these phases is very similar to that found in komatiites for the same minerals. FeNi slag is therefore an industrial analogue that is easy to study and compare to komatiites. The BGRIMM process mineralogy analyser (BPMA) is a new automated mineralogy software platform developed in China. This system consists of the BPMA software platform, controlling a combination of commercially available scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive Xray spectrometry (EDS). The BPMA software controls SEM and EDS through their application programming interfaces, to form an auto-SEM and EDS system that automatically acquires BSE images and X-ray spectra, respectively, and classifies minerals by spectrum-matching. After automated measurement and mineral identification, various quantitative process mineralogical data (e.g., mineral composition, mineral abundance, mineral liberation and intergrowth relationships, mineral associations, particle and grain sizes, particle density distributions, calculated assay, elemental deportments, mineral grade recovery and elemental grade recovery, etc.) would be calculated quickly, accurately and automatically. The BPMA could be used for ore characterisation as a new advanced automated mineralogy technology. The conversion of carbon-containing feedstock into liquid fuels can proceed via the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, which is catalysed using supported cobalt catalysts. These catalysts contain noble metals to facilitate the reduction of oxidic cobalt species in the catalyst precursor to metallic cobalt, which is the catalytically active species for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. This is thought to occur via hydrogen spillover, i.e. the diffusion of atomic hydrogen over the support from the noble metal to the oxidic cobalt moieties. Noble metals may also affectthe dispersion of cobalt in the active Fischer-Tropsch catalyst. The economic aspect of the addition of noble metals to the Fischer-Tropsch catalyst is discussed.

The multi-reef area of Cooke 3 Shaft provides a unique mining challenge on account of the very thin middlings between the pay bands and the marginal values of the reef. It is uneconomic or impractical, because of the excessive heights, to mine the middlings using conventional stoping methods. The development of suitable mining methods is discussed with particular emphasis on the control of water inflow and the policy of not jeopardizing or sterilizing other reef horizons by the mining method implemented. No definite solution is currently available, but with the aid of instrumentation, computer analyses and mechanized mining equipment, the mine continues to attempt to maximize extraction and profits.

A partial shaft pillar extraction project was embarked on at a mine in the West Wits mining region in South Africa. Prior to the extraction, a rock engineering assessment was conducted with the main objective being to establish which areas of the shaft pillar could be extracted without unduly affecting the stability of major infrastructure within the shaft pillar. Standard numerical modelling methods were used to conduct this assessment and several areas were identified for extraction. However, during the extraction process, it was found that the infrastructure was affected more than was originally predicted by linear elastic modelling. In addition to this, several large events resulted in far more large aftershocks than would normally be predicted. In order to gain an understanding of this phenomenon, seismic data was integrated with numerical modelling as follows: > The seismic data in the form of displacements was integrated in 3D space within the model to assess the effect of static stress changes associated with seismic activity > Data from large events was integrated onto specific structures, where displacements associated with large events were integrated onto the plane of structure in question. This paper describes the methodology and results obtained from each of the above processes and include insights into the mining process that were previously unfathomable using standard linear elastic numerical modelling. The way forward for this rock engineering assessment of partial shaft pillar extraction is also discussed.

The results revealed that the pozzolanic activity of the gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases improved by mechanical activation. Under the same activation conditions, the activated mica powders possessed the highest pozzolanic activity index, followed by the activated feldspar, and the activated quartz exhibited the lowest pozzolanic activity index. The addition of calcium oxide promoted the formation of amorphous C–(A)–S–H gel for all paste samples, and stratlingite and hydrotalcite were observed in calcium oxide activated mica paste. The addition of natural anhydrite promoted the formation of ettringite for the pastes of calcium oxide activated aluminosilicates materials (gold mine tailings, mica, and feldspar). Furthermore, the pozzolanic activity indexes of the mechanically activated gold mine tailings and their main mineral phases were tested to be qualified for use as supplementary cementitious material in cement. This paper provided an innovative approach for recycling gold mine tailings as supplementary cementitious materials in cement, which would be environmentally friendly and cost-effective. There are two main types of densifying cyclones currently available in the market, namely polyeurethane (PU) and ceramic. The PU densifying cyclones are currently used throughout the Grootegeluk complex and coal beneficiation in general. It has been identified that PU densifiers wear relatively fast depending on the operating pressure and need to be replaced frequently as a result. The motivation for this paper is to achieve an increase in the densifying cyclone lifetime through less wear and an increase in efficiency resulting in the ability to build higher relative densities (RD) more quickly. This will allow for a reduction in downtimes due to replacing densifying cyclones as well as building RD and a reduction in the operating costs associated with replacing worn densifying cyclones. Some of the major findings of the study indicated that the ceramic cyclone theoretically undergoes less wear than the PU cyclone, but since wear is application-specific and was evaluated, the wear on the polyurethane cyclone was found to be minimal. The RD differential is higher on the PU cyclones than the ceramic cyclones, showing that the PU cyclones perform better in a densifying application. This is the first test conducted on this application and type of cyclones. It should therefore be noted that having the PU cyclone significantly outperform the ceramic cyclone was not expected, due to the only change being the material of construction. This is an indication to take the material of construction into account when selecting cyclones as it can have a significant impact on the cyclone performance in specific applications. Processing confidence for a bankable feasibility study on a green field heavy mineral deposit is inmost cases achieved only through bulk sample processing. Bulk sample is classified as a large enough concentrate sample that is processed into final products to satisfy market sample demand as well as further processing demands such as smelting. In this case study the demand was to produce 500 tons of heavy mineral concentrate from more than 5 000 tons run-of-mine on are mote location with limited to no infrastructure. The various challenges faced and lessons learned are documented as an outcome of the success of this mission.

It is well known that job-related hazards and individual factors influence occupational injuries. However, research involving coalminers has been limited. This case-control study assessed the relationships of job-related hazards and individual/life style factors with injuries among underground coal miners. It compared 245 cases with at least one injury during the previous two-year period with 245 matched controls with no injury. The data were gathered via personal interview and analysed using the conditional logistic model. The significant risk factors were materials handling (adjusted OR 5.15), poor environmental/working conditions (2.63), geological/strata control-related hazards (2.35), lack of formal education (3.00), sleep disorders (1.86), alcohol consumption (2.32), disease (2.23), having a large family (5.40), and risk-taking behaviour (9.40). Machine-related hazards, sleep disorders and alcohol consumption primarily affected workers aged less than 45 years; whereas, environment/working condition-related hazards, presence of disease, smoking, risk-taking behaviour and large family size were more likely among workers aged 45 or over. The Mine Site Technologies, MST BlastPED ST is a wireless/remote blasting system used in more than sixty (60) mines (including two mines in Zambia and one in Tanzania) since its release in 2002. The system consists of a controller and signal tube initiator which communicate wirelessly using spread spectrum frequency. This technique ensures a robust and secure wireless link between the controller and the signal tube initiator. The configuration of the system ensures ease of use with all the instructions for initiating the blast printed on the equipment. This means little or no formal training is required to use the system. The technology enables you to have your blasting point at a distance of up to 4 km, line of sight (LOS), as opposed to the traditional distance of 500m from the blast. This ensures the blast takes place from a safer and secure location. The paper and presentation will provide the audience with the benefit of many years of international mining know-how in this technology as well as more recent local African experiences. There will be references to demonstration blasts done in South Africa, current users in Africa and elsewhere. Practical Return on Investment (ROI) calculations and references to safe blasting practice will also be included.

A knowledge of the steady-state mass and energy requirements of a particular process is essential to a determination of the economic feasibility of that process. A predictive simulation technique can be of great value in this respect. A versatile computer program based on a fundamental thermodynamic approach has been developed for the prediction of process requirements. The equilibrium composition of a multiphase system is determined by the technique of free energy minimization. Energy-balance calculations are performed using the appropriate thermodynamic data for the chemical species present in the composite materials used. All models for the process units under consideration are written in modular form, the output being calculated from the input and the specified operating conditions. The computer program is written in such a way that it can be used easily by anyone familiar with the processes involved, even though he may have no previous experience with a program of this type. The program is structured so as to facilitate the varying of one parameter without any alteration to the others, thus simplifying the investigation of the effects of any parameters considered to be important. The program has the advantage of being able to compare existing and new processes on the same basis, namely from the ores to the molten metal.

"Mapping of hydrothermally altered areas, which are usually associated with mineralization, is essential in mineral exploration. In this research, open source reflectance spectroscopy data from the multispectral moderate-resolution Landsat 8 satellite was used to map altered rocks in the Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa. The unique spectral reflectance and absorption characteristics of remotely sensed Landsat data in the visible, near-infrared (NIR), shortwave-infrared (SWIR) and thermal infrared (TIR) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum were used in different digital image processing techniques. The band ratios (red/blue, SWIR 2/NIR, SWIR 1/NIR), spectral band combinations (Kaufmann ratio, Sabins ratio) and principal component analysis (Crosta technique) were applied to efficiently and successfully map hydrothermal alteration minerals. The results showed that the combination of spectral bands and the principal component analysis method is effective in delineating mineral alteration through remotely sensed satellite data. The validation of results by using the published mineral maps of the Council for Geoscience South Africa showed a good relationship with the identified zones of mineralization. The methodology developed in this study is cost-effective and time-saving, and can be applied to inaccessible and/or new areas with limited ground-based knowledge to obtain reliable and up-to-date mineral information.IntroductionMany developing nations depend on exploration and exploitation of mineral resources to sustain their economic growth. Usually, the traditional mineral exploration techniques require enormous finances, prolonged time, and tremendous manpower, particularly in areas that are not easily reachable (Maduaka, 2014). Furthermore, mineral exploration required state-of-the-art techniques and expertise along with geological, geochemical, and geophysical datasets, which may not be easily available or may be lacking where access is problematic (Kaiser et al., 2002; Bemis et al., 2014). Modern remote sensing technology has proved to be one of the highly efficient and robust techniques used for mineral exploration. The use of remote sensing satellite images for geological mapping and mineral exploration usually involves studying the physicochemical properties of rocks and weathering soils, such as mineralogy, landforms, geochemical signatures, and the spatiall distribution of lineaments (Bhattacharya et al., 2012)."

Perceptions of disaster caused by burning fossil fuels have reached such a pitch that they seriously threaten the very future of the industry. Coal is a dirty word. A leader in Business Day(January 192009) claimed ?There is no disputing that renewable and non-polluting energy sources are preferable to the country?the true cost of so-called cheap coal-fired power stations is neither reflected nor accounted for by Eskom?the true and immediate but unacknowledged cost of continued coal mining is apparent in the catastrophic level of acidification from mining runoff of all significant natural water resources in the country?and their waters have been rendered unfit for human consumption. Air quality is in a similar state with?increases in pulmonary disease causing workforce absenteeism and compromised childhood development, among many other health problems recorded in areas polluted by coal mining.? The upshot is that our latest coal-fired power station, Kusile, is being required to use flue gas desulphurization. The costs are considerable, and the benefits minimal. Meanwhile, exports are being threatened by EU directives and an assumption that South African coal gives off excessive quantities of SOx and NOx when burned. The industry needs to arm itself with clear responses to these and similar misconceptions, and to communicate those responses loudly and clearly, if it is to survive.
