Volume-rate-of-flow measurements were made of the flow of mercury through porous samples under conditions of no field, magnetic field transverse to the direction of flow, and transverse magnetic field and electric current to determine if a magnetic method might be potentially useful in the study of pore-size distribution. No change was observed in the flow rate from the application of a magnetic field alone. The application of both field and current produced an electromagnetic pumping action with or against the direction of flow, depending upon the direction of the electric current. This pumping effect was observed to be greater in a rectangular porcelain sample than the calculated value for an equal-Sized open channel.

The Rio Blanco massive hydraulic fracturing demonstration has been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines, Atomic Energy Commission, and a group of 15 industry participants. CER Geonuclear Corp. has been retained as program manager to evaluate the stimulation effects of very long fractures, suitably propped open in thick sections containing multiple intervals of low-permeability gas-bearing sands. The zone of interest for this demonstration includes Fort Union and Mesaverde sands from about 5,800 to 8,.200 feet deep in Rio Blanco County, Colo., about 1 mile from the site of the May 1973 triple nuclear detonation aimed at stimulating production from the same reservoirs. Drilling the test well and evaluating the reservoir prior to fracturing was funded by Government participants; fracturing and production testing will be funded by industry. The test well has row been completed at a total depth of 8,170 feet, and data obtained from logs, cores, production and drill-stem tests indicate reservoir conditions to be less favorable for gas production than anticipated. Structural position is lower than expected, resulting in higher water saturation than was determined for the same sands at the nuclear fracturing location. The lower sands of the Fort Union sequence appear to have higher shale content than has been encountered in other wells in the area. Despite the likelihood that gas productivity will be undesirably low following stimulation, the industry participants decided to proceed with the stimulation program with the thought that the resulting data would be useful. The success of the stimulation test probably will have to be judged by production increase rather than by production volume.

The domestic mining industry gained more strength in 1988 as the healthy comeback that became evident in 1987 continued and grew for many commodities. The increasing and more stable commodity prices, still predominantly in the metals sector, reinforced both the new ways of conducting business and the use of technological advancements in successfully lowering operating costs during the last 4 to 6 years. Some commodities and companies still struggled to survive, but increases in productivity and profits were becoming more common.

The real gross national product (GNP) advanced at a annual rate of 3.1 % during the second quarter, following a revised 3.4% increase in the first quarter (see table 1). Export growth continues to play an important role in the rising output. Combined with the decline in imports, it resulted in a noticeably improved trade position. Imports of consumer goods, including automobiles and food, fell while exports rose. Imported cars have been losing ground to domestic cars. The foreign car share of the U.S. market fell from 36% in October 1987, to 29% in May 1988. Business spending for new plant and equipment contributed strongly to the GNP increase. Equipment purchases, particularly of computers, rose at a 14.8% annual rate, following a large first-quarter gain. Purchases of structures rose 11.8%. The other key component of business spending, change in business inventories, declined from the first quarter. Inventory buildup in late 1987 had been considered excessive.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has been developing processes for producing synthesis gas directly from coal, oxygen, and superheated steam. An atmospheric-pressure pilot plant was constructed and operated to: 1. Determine the operability of the plant for gasifying coals of different ranks under various operating conditions. Listed in decreasing order of rank, these coals included a Pennsylvania anthracite, a bituminous A coal from the Sewickley bed, West Virginia, and a subbituminous C coal mined in the Lake de Smet region of Wyoming. 2. Determine the effect of varying operating conditions on: (a) Standard cubic feet (std.c.f.) of oxygen and pounds of coal of different rank required to make M std.c.f. of product gas (carbon monoxide plus hydrogen); (b) carbon gasified, percent; (c) exit-gas temperature, degrees F.; and (d) heat loss, B.t.u. per pound coal. 3. Compare the gasification characteristics, indicated in item 2, of coals of different rank: Bituminous A, anthracite, and subbiturninous C. 4. Determine the concentration of dust in the gases produced and the efficiency of dust removal, and investigate the relation between the sulfur content in the coals gasified and the gases produced.

Brief history of photography Silver- based photographic materials are made for many applications that require different photochemical and physical response characteristics and a wide variety of formats and sizes. All of these products are laminates consisting of a surface-treated support and bonded gelatin layers. Two basic types predominate - films and papers. Films have transparent or translucent plastic supports (mostly cellulose tri-acetate and polyester), while papers have mostly a paper core coated with polyethylene resin layers on both sides (RC type). The front layer contains white titanium dioxide to provide high reflectivity and the back layer a matting agent. However, a few so-called fiber base papers are still supplied. These have a high quality paper base coated with a baryta layer ; i.e. a gelatin layer containing white barium sulfate. The manufacture of photographic film and paper supports requires special procedures and equipment, because of the severe requirements for chemical purity, optical integrity and uniformity (see Table 1 on page 10 for a list of the principal makers of film and paper supports).

A survey of the petroleum pipe lines by the Bureau of Mines as of May 1, 1923, shows that on that date there was a total of slightly more than 90,000 miles of pipe lines in the United States, having a capacity of approximately 15,750,000 barrels, which is equivalent to one-fourth of the nation's average production for one month. These lines varied in diameter from 2 to 16 inches, the weighted average being 6 inches. The total pipe-line milenge was about equally divided between trunk lines and gathering lines, though the capacity of the former was about four times that of the latter. This was due, of course, to the difference in average diameter, that for the former being 7.4 inches as compared with 3.7 inches for the latter. The common size for trunk lines was 8 inches, and for gathering lines 2 inches. Oklahora, with 19,180 miles of pipe lines, is the leading State in total mileage, with Texas second and Pennsylvania third. From point of trunk lines alone Texas is considerably ahead of any of the other States, a position which it owes to its size and to the growth in the rovement to its Gulf ports. Cali- fornia, though the leading State from point of production, ranks only seventh in pipe-line mileage. This is due to the fortunate location of the Los Angeles Basin fields, some of which are within sight of the refineries to which their oil is delivered or of the port of San Pedro through which their oil is shipped. The last survey of this nature, made in the spring of 1924 by the U. S. Geological Survey, recorded a total mileage of nearly 83,000 with a capacity of approximately 14,450,000 barrels. This indicates an increase of 9 per cent in both mileage and capacity during the two years.

To furnish the information frequently requested by producers and suppliers as to the fuel requirements of the Federal Government , the Bureau of Mines , with the cooperation of the consuming departments and establishments , has collected the data herein , showing the Government's fuel consumption during the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1930. The following tables show the quantities and kinds of fuels consumed by the Federal Government in each of its departments and their principal branches , in each State , and in Alaska , Hawaii , Panama Canal Zone , Porto Rico , and the Virgin Islands . The separate departments and establishments were asked to supply information for each Federal building or other plant and , as to vessel fuel , the amount loaded at each port of supply . Fuels consumed in internal combustion engines are not included . The report does not include fuels used by Post Offices of the fourth class , since their fuels are not purchased by the Federal Government but are covered by an allowance in each case for light and heat . In some cases the data supplied represent receipts , which are approximately equivalent to consumption . The present study is believed to be the first effort to bring together the data representing the Government's requirements for the various fuels which it consumes . Figures showing the coal consumed by the Federal Government were gathered for the year 1922. These data are shown in an article by O. P. Hood and R. H. Kudlich of the Bureau of Mines , contributed as a chapter to " Industrial Coal ; Purchase , Delivery and Storage , " published by the American Engineering Council . The figures of coal consumption presented herewith are approximately comparable with those published for 1922 , a relatively small difference being due to the fact that the 1922 figures include the Philippine Islands and all other territory in which any coal was consumed by the Government . At the present time , the only data on Government fuel consumption that are published regularly are those compiled by E. B. Swanson , chief economist of the petroleum economics division of the Bureau of Mines . These are published annually by the Bureau of Mines in " Sources and Distribution of Major Petroleum Products , Atlantic Coast States , " and by the bureau in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute in the annual " National Survey of Fuel Oil Distribution . " It is believed that the data herewith will prove of interest and value to the fuel industries as well as to Government consumers and that it will also afford a basis for measuring future trends in the use of the various fuels by the Federal Government . Figures showing the quantities of the various kinds of fuels consumed by each of the executive departments and independent establishments , are given in Table 1. The Sutherland copper prospect is situated in Floyd County, Va. The immediate area was prospected around 1850, and one of the adits possibly dates from that time. Little or no ore has been mined from the deposit. The deposit is a mineralized sulfide zone occurring in mica schist and consisting mostly of pyrrhotite with minor amount of copper. A magnetometer survey of the deposit by the American Metal Co. in 1939 showed an anomaly that was thought to indicate a zone: of secondary enrichment. The Bureau of Mines diamond-drilled 14 holes, totaling 913 feet, and opened an adit during February and March 1943. No appreciable copper values or indications of secondary enrichment were found.

In distributing natural and mixed gas, the industry is each year confronted with the problem of manufacturing gas in increasing amounts as the supply of natural gas becomes more nearly exhausted. The manufactured gas is now used in mixtures with the still available natural product, and will subsequently be used straight as a substitute gas. The gases that might be considered, and are producible by tried and developed processes, include water gas, carbureted water gas, and coal gas. Singularly, these gases can be used in this manner in ordinary appliances only when proportional amounts of them in the mixtures do not vary beyond rather definite limits, unless burner adjustments are made. The limits are defined by the specific gravity, content of inerts, and burning properties of the respective gases. Anticipating a future standard for city gas lower than that of natural gas during the period when considerable natural gas is available, there is justification for considering the possibility of re-forming natural gas and making a product that has substantially the same properties as other gases which can readily be generated. This report gives the results obtained during a series of tests made under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., re-forming natural gas at Toledo, Ohio, in full-scale operation in a water-gas generator having a grate area of 25.1 square feet. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Ohio Fuel Gas Co. constructed a special water-gas generator for the tests and provided men and the necessary funds for its operation. Appreciation is expressed for the general spirit of helpful cooperation which was evidenced in the activities of all those who took part in the work. This Bureau of Mines report converts published data on the cost of ventilating uranium mines to a common price base and analyzes these data to determine the cost per ton of uranium ore at various levels of radiation exposure control. There appears to be an exponential increase of cost as the radiation level is lowered. The 1967 base costs are extrapolated to present dollars, and some cost comparisons are given for other radiation control measures.

The motor gasoline that is bring marketed in the United States this stunner is slightly more volatile than that sold a year ago. During the past eight years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gaoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the sixteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

The Sullman, Picard & Ballot patent, No. 835120, is a process of concentrating ore which consists in mixing the powdered ore with water, adding a small proportion, a fraction of 1 per cent on the ore, of an oily liquid having a preferential affinity for metal- liferous matter, agitating the mixture until the oil-coated mineral matter forms into a froth and separating the froth from the remain- der by flotation. The process is known as an air-flotation process which consists in the use of a frothing agent in conjunction with such agitation of the ore pulp as will distribute the metallic particles of the ore throughout the mixture and produce bubbles of air and bring them in contact in the mixture with the metallic particles so dis- tributed. The bubbles will become attached to such metallic par- ticles, carrying them separately from the particles of gangue up through the surface of the mixture where they can be readily collected by skimming, by overflow, or by the use of other well-known devices. The air-flotation process was a patentable invention in the discov- ery made in March, 1905, and was not anticipated and is valid. Prior to that time there had been no suggestion in the arts that a propor- tion of 0.1 per cent of oil to ore or of any other fraction of 1 per cent of oil to ore would or might result in successful concentration. While the ascertainment that such a minute proportion of oil would affect a successful concentration of ore through a flotation process was a discovery, it was nevertheless of such a character, viewed with respect to the circumstances under which it was made, as to involve inven- tion and confer patentability. Claims 1 and 12 of the Sullman, Picard & Ballot patent, No. 835120, for a process of concentrating ore, known as the air-flotation process, are valid; but claim 9 is so indefinite as to render the claim void. The object of the Sullman, Greenway & Higgins patent, No. 962678, dated June 28, 1910, for improvements in ore concentration, is to separate metalliferous matter, graphite, and the like from gangue by means of oil, fatty acid, or other substances which have a prefer- ential affinity for metalliferous matter over gangue, and it is valid. The Greenway patent, No. 1099699, dated June 9, 1914, for improve- ments in the concentration of ores is invalid, as in view of the prior art the omission to use acid in the process can not confer patenta- bility.

The Ottoman law, which was in force in Palestine before the British con- quest of the country (1917-18), still forms the basis of the legal system. Nevertheless, with respect to mining, legislation has been considerably re- vised since the British occupation and mandate, some of the Ottoman laws having been either radically altered or wholly abolished, in order that the legal status of Palestine might be more in harmony with that of western States. Legal transition is still far from being complete; however, no further mining legislation is pending at the present time (March, 1931). Revisions during the British military occupation (1917-20) took the form of proclamations of the commander in chief. After the establishment of the civil administration (1920) changes in the legal system were a decided de- parture from the Turkish laws. In 1922 the practice was begun of giving con- secutive numbers and short titles to the ordinances. The basic mining law is the mining ordinance of 1925, No. 19 (amended by mining ordinance No. 10 of 1926), an "ordinance to make provision regarding the winning of minerals, and the conditions under which minerals may be gotten, and to replace the existing Ottoman laws relating thereto." The chief regu- latory provisions are embodied in regulations (A) and (B)--mining ordinance, 1925. This mining legislation of 1925 repealed the following laws:

The San Manuel is a deposit of low-grade disseminated copper ore. It was brought to the attention of the government in October 1942 through an application to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation for a development loan, supported by a report by Henry W. Nichols. Nichols' sampling of two outcrops containing copper silicate and his geologic map indicated that a minable body of copper ore might be developed. The Federal Geological Survey was requested to examine the property. The Survey mapped the geology in March 1943 and cut a few check samples, which substantially confirmed Nichols' sampling of the outcrops and a few shallow workings. The geologists of the Survey recommended some test drilling by the Bureau of Mines. The property was examined by the author and Wm. D. Hughes, associate engineer of the Bureau of Mines on March 22 and 26, 1943, and a preliminary drilling campaign was recommended. Five shallow churn-drill holes totaling 1,480 feet were put down under the supervision of Chas. A. Kumke, one of the Bureau's engineers, from November 23, 1943, to January 13, 1944. This work indicated that the deposit extended deeper than the 350-foot depth attained in the deepest hole and might have very considerable areal extent. Additional funds were allotted, and the drilling contract was extended twice to a final maximum of 17,000 feet with 2,000 feet maximum depth of hole. Drilling was continued by the Bureau of Mines until February 2, 1945, when 15,844 feet of hole had been drilled. The Magna Copper Co. took options on this and adjoining property in September 1944 and commenced drilling with two machines. It also engaged the two contract drills used by the Bureau after it stopped drilling. It exercised its options in August 1945 and organized the San Manuel Copper Corp. to operate the property. That company is continuing to explore the ore body with six churn drills. Thomas Lyon took options early in 1945 on holdings adjoining the San Manuel property on the east and is operating two churn drills. Exploration up to the completion of the last holes started by the Bureau of Mines indicated a block of ore 3,100 feet long, 400 to 800 feet wide, and 500 to 900 feet thick, and averaging about 0.8 percent copper. Subsequent drilling showed that the ore body extends considerably beyond this block. The axis of the ore body strikes about N. 61° E. Copper minerals are disseminated in hydrothermally altered quartz monzonite and monzonite porphyry. Ore outcrops in two small areas over the northeast part of the block. Elsewhere the copper-bearing rocks are capped by Gila conglomerate, which thickens toward the west and south. Drilling showed that the ore is in a thick, tabular body with a steep dip to the south. The ore body lies near the surface in the northeastern part of the block. The south side of the block is much farther below the surface than the north side. There the upper part of the copper-bearing rocks is lightly mineralized, so that the hanging wall of minable ore lies deeper than the base of the conglomerate cap, which thickens southward.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted explosion tests on various full-scale cementitious bulkheads used in abandoned mine areas to evaluate the ability of the bulkheads to withstand gas explosion over-pressures of 20 psig. Tests were performed on 120-ft2 solid-concrete-block seals of varying thicknesses and designs. Of the seven solid-concrete-block seals tested, only the standard-type seal, having a 16-in thickness, keyed at the floor and ribs, all joints mortared, wedged at the roof, and a center pilaster, maintained its integrity when subjected to a 20-psig pressure wave. After being subjected to repeated explosions, the standard seal only showed a small hairline crack and had an air leakage of 87 ft3/min at a pressure differential of 1 in H2O. Tests were performed on cementitious foam seals of varying thicknesses and compressive strengths. Explosion tests have shown that 200-psi strength, 4- and 8-ft-thick seals can withstand a 20-psig pressure wave. At a pressure differential of 1 in H20, no air leakage was detected through the 200-psi, 8-ft-thick foam seal.

The Bureau of Mines has installed passive water explosion barriers in two operating mines to determine their usefulness in U.S. coal mines. The primary objective of this field trial was to determine the effect of the explosion barriers on mining operations. Data were also obtained on the ability of the barriers to withstand the mine environment and on the effect of the barriers on belt operation, ventilation, worker travel, and rock dusting. Fifty barriers were installed at three separate beltway locations, and periodic inspections were made. A year after installation, no defects of the barriers or support hardware were detected, nor was any complaint as to the presence of the barriers made by the mine personnel. To date, 2-1/2 years after installation, the barriers have had no detrimental ef-fect on rock dusting, belt operation, or ventilation. Costs of material, fabrication, and installation are reported herein.

A complete list of permissible mining equipment, rescue apparatus and gas masks tested prior to January 1, 1925, was published in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 3761. The present list includes all equipment tested and approved by the Bureau, up to and including January 1, 1926, and supersedes the list issued as Serial 27202 in November, 1925. It covers electric air compressors, coal drills, mining machines, mine pumps, room hoists, switches, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, flash lamp, methane indicators and detectors, blasting units, storage battery loco- motives, power trucks, self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus and gas masks. The system under which these devices were tested permits the manu- facturer, after his equipment has passed certain tests prescribed by the bureau, to mark his equipment with a seal showing that it has been "approv- ed" by the Bureau of Mines. The tests are designed to insure that the equipment has the minimum requirements for safety in use. The only object of the bureau in making such tests and publishing lists of permissible equipment is to safeguard the lives of workers and to help lessen the hazards of mining.

From remote antiquity stone has been employed for structural, ornamental, and memorial purposes. It was, and still is, so used because of its availability in innumerable localities and its architectural adaptability, dignity, substantiality, and durability. The principal varieties of stone used are granite, marble, limestone, sandstone, and slate. This report deals with granite. OCCURRENCE AND CHARACTER OF GRANITE Granites usually have been classed as igneous rocks derived from molten masses or magmas, but there is wide evidence that the origin of some granites may be attributed to regional metamorphism of preexisting rocks, rearrangement and recrystallization taking place without a liquid or molten stage. In any event granitization is a slow, deep-seated process.
