This report presents statistical data on individual plants in the fuel- briquet and packaged-fuel industries circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its 1957 annual survey. This survey revealed that 17 briquet and 23 packaged-fuel plants were active part or throughout the year. The annual production capacity of the fuel-briquet industry was 3,088,000 net tons, a decrease of 17 percent from 1956. The decline in capacity was caused in part by the permanent retirement of 4 plants and also by the reduction in capacities of 4 other plants. The rate of production of briquet plants also decreased as the industry operated at 35.8 percent of capacity compared with 40.9 percent in 1956. Every operating plant in 1957 had an annual capacity exceeding 25,000 tons.

The Madison RARE II study area has four prospects with identified resources. These are listed in table 1 and are described in the following text. A high potential for Sillimanite exists at the Placer Creek occurrence (fig. 1, no. 7) and potential for phosphate rack in all areas underlain by the Phosphoria Formation. Some prospects exhibit minor potential for copper, lead, zinc, silver, and gold in the southern portion and very minor potential in the northern portion. Deposits in the northern end also have low potential for rare earth, asbestiform anthophyllite, or kyanite group minerals (including sillimanite).

THE MINERAL INDUSTRIES had a near-record year in 1950, as rising industrial activity in general, greatly accentuated by the outbreak of hostilities in Korea in midyear, called forth increasing supplies of mineral fuels and raw materials. The aggregate value of mineral production was second only to that in 1948, and the aggregate physical volume was exceeded only in 1948 and 1947. Lower coal production accounted for the failure to surpass these earlier years. Growth of production was fairly constant throughout the year, especially for crude petroleum; its physical output for the year as a whole exceeded that of 1949 by 7 percent. According to Federal Reserve Board indexes, other relative gains were 16 percent for coal, 9 percent for fuels in general, and 17 percent for metals. The increase for mining in general was of the order of 10 percent. This was not quite as large as the general increase in industrial production but clearly reflected the total-industrial trend (see fig. 1).

The 1963 performance of the United States economy was impressive. The year was one of continued growth unmarred by a recession. By the end of 1963 the economy's expansion had already lasted almost as long as the 1954-57 upswing, and the net gain in output since the trough in activity in early 1961 compared favorably with most earlier postwar cyclical advances. There was no indication of any slow- down at yearend. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income in 1963 were 5 percent higher than in the previous year. GNP totaled $584 billion, a gain of $28 billion over 1962. Real output of goods and services rose 3.4 percent over the year. Price increases continued to be moderate. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all registered new but unemployment continued high at 5.5 percent and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to use its full potential. Current value of mineral production kept pace with the economy. The constant dollar value of mineral production gained more than real GNP because of the relatively stable price of minerals. Mining production achieved a new high in 1963. Steel production totaled 110 million tons, 12 million tons above 1962, making 1963 the first 100- million-ton year since 1957 and lifting the steel-associated minerals group upward. The gain in ferrous metals mining was insufficient to compensate for the decline of nonferrous metals mining resulting in an insignificant decline in the metal mining total as a whole. This is the second of a series of publications that describes the progress of mechanical longwall coal mining in the United States in which a German coal planer was employed.3/ Details of the equipment, a description of its operation, and the results obtained in mining the experimental panel were published in the preceding report. Experimental mining with the planer in the first panel showed an improvement in performance over conventional mining methods at the coal company's Stotesbury 11 mine. The work, which was begun on an experimental basis, soon proved successful, and the coal company purchased the equipment for continued use. Two panels, adjacent to the first, were developed and mined with the planer. Each of these panels was shorter than the preceding one because water seepage from a surface creek limited development. On completion of mining in the third panel, the planer equipment was moved by the cooperating company to a nearby mine operated in the same coal bed where a large area of coal suitable for planer mining is available.

The various underground rooms in the Bureau of Mines Oil-Shale mine, Rifle, Colo., have been open for periods ranging from 3 to 5 years. During this time 3 roof falls have occurred; 1 was induced, and the other 2 were unintentional. The three roof falls are described in this report. Two causative factors are discussed -a time-dependent deterioration of the roof rock and an unfavorable system of jointing that occurred in the strata overlying the present roof horizon. Irrespective of cause, the operating life of any stoping area would have been short com-pared with the life of the roof (1 to 4 in the most unfavorable instance), if a high-production system of mining had been employed. The report is concluded with several recommendations that should be considered in planning future mining operations.

For a study such as this, which summarizes and amalgamates much information collected, compiled, and utilized by the numerous U.S. Bureau of Mines country specialists and branch chiefs for inclusion in the country and regional reports that comprise the five other sections of 1991 Minerals Yearbook-International Review, it is clearly impossible to cite all sources of information used in its presentation, but some recognition is due. Generally speaking, this study and its related detailed studies on countries and areas would be much more difficult, if not impossible, without the efforts of the personnel of national mining and geological agencies throughout the world. Information that they collect, compile, and then publish, either in their own volumes or those of central statistical agencies in their countries, are the foundations on which this work rests. Thus, appreciation is expressed to the multitude of persons employed by these agencies.

In laboratory experiments, the Bureau of Mines investigated melting, quenching, and sulfuric acid leaching of alumina from mixtures of albite and anorthite, and from anorthosites containing 26 to 32 percent alumina. Variations in pouring temperature, quenching and leaching conditions, were studied with respect to the extraction of alumina and impurities. Virtually all of the alumina was dissolved by leaching melted and quenched California anorthosite in boiling 16-percent sulfuric acid solutions for 15 to 30 minutes. The leach solutions were readily separable from the solid residue by conventional thickening and filtration techniques. Only 2 to 5 grams of SiO2, Fe2O3, or CaO dissolved per 100 grams of alumina. The quantity of SiOz in solution varied inversely with the duration of the leach and with the concentration of the H2SO4 solution used. Melted and quenched Wyoming and Minnesota anorthosites with SiO2:CaO weight ratios of 4.3 and 3.2, respectively, were less amenable to sulfuric acid leaching than California anorthosite with an SiO2:CaO weight ratio of 5.3. However, excellent results were obtained on the Wyoming and Minnesota anorthosites by the addition of SiO2 to these materials before melting, in quantities sufficient to adjust the SiO2:CaO weight ratios of the furnace charges to between 4 and 6.

"These proceedings consist of papers presented at a Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminar on postdisaster survival and rescue research. Several seminars are held each year to bring the latest results of Bureau research to the attention of the mining industry as quickly as possible.INTRODUCTIONThe postdisaster research program is directed toward research and development of technology and equipment that increases the chances of a miner surviving or being rescued after an underground mine disaster. A disaster is an accident of major proportions, and it may result in the entrapment of miners whose normal egress from the mine is cut off. This often necessitates a rescue operation and a means of keeping the trapped miners alive while they await rescue. The Bureau is currently pursuing research to develop the technology that will enhance the ability of miners to survive such an occurrence. The research is divided into two basic problem areas, survival and rescue. Both areas are concerned with the inability of miners and rescue teams to cope with the postaisaster environment, such as toxic gases, unstable roof conditions, water flooding, and lack of oxygen. In addition, research is also conducted to find ways of locating and quickly reaching trapped miners. Most of the research conducted by the Bureau has been directed toward the postdisaster problems associated with coal mines. However, most of the research results are also applicable to noncoal mines as well.The papers presented in these proceedings address some of the recent research conducted by the Bureau of Mines that has been directed toward the postdisaster problems outlined above. The topics covered range from an overview of the technology developed for oxygen selfrescuers to training programs for mine rescue. Any questions or comments pertaining to this research are encouraged and appreciated. The Federal Bureau of Mines, as part of its goal to minimize undesirable environmental impacts associated with mineral processing, has investigated a soda-smelting technique for processing ilmenite into pig iron and a titanium slag that is suitable for a feed to a sulfate-process titania pigment plant. By this procedure, the generation of ferrous sulfate waste and its associated disposal problem is obviated. Molten titania slag was quenched, water leached, and filtered to yield a sodium titanate intermediate product containing about 70 wt-pct Ti02, 1 wt-pct Fe, and 20 wt-pct Na20. This intermediate product, high-soda titanate (HST), was mixed with H2S04, calcined, quenched, and water leached to produce a low-soda titanate (LST) product that contained only 2 wt-pct Na20. Both the HST and LST were evaluated as feed materials for preparing titania by the sulfate process. About 95 pct of the Ti02 was extracted from HST and LST by digestion in concentrated or 50-wt-pct-H2S204 solutions. About 95 pct of the solubilized Ti02 was subsequently recovered from the titanyl sulfate solutions by hydrolysis. Barren solutions from hydrolysis, containing about 26-wt-pct H2S04, were upgraded by vacuum-thermal evaporation or electrodialysis. The regenerated acid solutions were used to digest additional HST and LST.

Over-exposure to noise remains a widespread, serious health hazard in the U.S. mining industries despite 25 years of regulation. Most other categories of illnesses and injuries associated with mining have improved, with the exception of hearing loss. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) coal noise sample data collected from 2000 to 2002 show that 65% of the equipment whose operators exceeded 100% noise dosage is comprised of seven different types of machines. The continuous mining machine is first among all the equipment with 35% of the noise overexposures. The ational Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research to reduce excessive exposure for operators of continuous mining machines and preventing additional cases of oise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) by developing low-cost retrofit noise controls for mining equipment. This paper describes a noise control for reducing the noise overexposures of continuous mining machine operators. Underground results show a 26.4% and 27.4% noise exposure reduction for the continuous mining machine operator. This research is providing the mining community with an additional noise control to be utilized on continuous mining machines, therefore reducing operator noise overexposure. Utilizing this newly developed noise control, along with previously proven controls for the continuous mining machine chain conveyor, will provide operators of these machines an opportunity to be within the MS HA-Permissible Exposure Limit (MSHA-PEL).

Control shearer-generated airborne respirable dust on longwall mining sections. Approach Previous Bureau studies have shown that using high-pressure water can have a significant impact on the amount of airborne dust released into the face airflow while cleaning and controlling the airflow in the immediate cutting zone. The basic concept to improve the drum water spray system was to utilize high-pressure (1,200 psi) inward-facing drum sprays to improve the dust knockdown efficiency of the spray system and confine the dust to the face area. This system would minimize the exposure of the shearer operator through dust avoidance and decrease face dust levels by suppressing the amount of respirable dust that becomes airborne. System Design In-mine tests were designed to provide information that would permit evaluation of the operation with different spray orientations and water spray pressures. This was achieved by comparison with a conventional baseline wet-cutting system consisting of 26 low-pressure bit sprays, located on the hit blocks to provide pick-point flushing. Total drum water flow was 60 gpm and was maintained continuously throughout all tests. The high-pressure inward-facing drum water spray system consisted of sprays located in each bit block, oriented 15° and 30° toward the face. The inward-facing water spray system was operated at either 800 or 1,200 psi.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated calcium fluoride (CaF2) assisted sulfuric acid (H2S04) leaching as an alternative to the melting-quenching procedure to obtain Mn from domestic manganese silicate resources. Pyroxmangite [(Mn, Fe) Si03] ore containing, in percent, 34.4 Mn, 22.8 Si, 2.6 Ca, and 1.3 Fe was leached in a 500-mL resin kettle. Ninety-six percent of the Mn was extracted under conditions of 330 g/L ore, 245 g/L H2S04, 35 g/L CaF2, 90' C, and 2 h. To incorporate electrowinning in recovering Mn, the ore was leached with a simulated spent anolyte solution containing, in grams per liter, 12 Mn, 140 H2S04, 130 (NH4)2S04 (ammonium sulfate), and 5 CaF2. Manganese extraction of 92 pct was achieved from 130 giL ore leached at 90° C in 3 h. The Fe, silica (SiOJ, and other impurities were precipitated from the pregnant solution by neutralization with ammonia (NH3). Manganese of greater than 99-pct purity was deposited at a cathode current density of 50 mA/ cm2 at 30° C, with a current efficiency of 65 pet in a two-compartment cell. A flowsheet was proposed for the leaching and electrowinning procedure.

During the 7-1/2 years (January 1945-June 1952), immediately preceding enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, 26 major disasters3/ in the coal mines of the United States caused the deaths of 491 persons. In the next 7-1/2 years under the act (July 1952-December 1959), only 12 major disasters occurred. The total killed was 148. This improvement is commendable. However, the continuing frequency of minor fires and gas and/or dust ignitions in the Nation's coal mines, many of which could have been of major consequence, are cause for serious concern to the coal-mining industry and those affiliated agencies engaged in promoting safety in the industry. The data presented in this report have been prepared to make available to the coal-mining industry and related groups an overall perspective of the disaster potential from mine fires and gas and/or dust ignitions in coal mines after 7-1/2 years under the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. This act, effective July 16, 1952, which amended the original Federal coal-mine investigative act of May 1941, provides under Title II certain enforcible mine-safety provisions designed to prevent major disasters caused by explosions, fires, inundations, and man-trip and man-hoist accidents in coal mines that employ 15 or more individuals underground.

The final 26 tables of this chapter, tables 14-39, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the "Area Reports: International" volume of the "Minerals Yearbook" and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-88 editions. In this year's edition, for the first time, a column has been added to each of these tables providing a 5 year average for 1985-89, inclusive. This should provide a clearer picture more rapidly of the role of each major producer over the 5-year period. The listing order of major producers, however, continues to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1989. With the inclusion of silver and uranium oxide in the 1988 edition of this chapter, this group of tables now includes each of the crude minerals that ranked from 1st to 19th in 1983 in terms of value of their output (as well as four others of lesser rank). These 23 crude mineral commodities accounted for 93% of the estimated value of world crude mineral of world crude mineral production in 1983. In addition, world output of five key down-stream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil are included because of their significance as products.

This proceedings volume contains papers presented at technology transfer seminars sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on New Technology for Ground Control in Retreat Mining. The seminars were conducted at five locations: Uniontown, PA (March 26, 1997), Norton, VA (April 8, 1997), Pikeville, KY (April 10, 1997), Charleston, WV (April 17, 1997), and Evansville, IN (April 22, 1997). The papers presented here describe several new, highly practical technologies developed by the NIOSH Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Centers3 to improve safety during pillar retreat operations. Two central issues are addressed: pillar design and mobile roof supports (MRS's). Proper pillar sizing is essential for safe pillar extraction. The Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program and its large data base of actual mining case histories are presented. LAMODEL, a second computer program, can be used for analysis of multiple-seam and other complex mining situations. Other papers address pillar design to avoid massive pillar collapses and the proper role of coal strength testing. MRS's have greatly improved safety where they are used for pillar line support. We studied the application of MRS's at 20 mines throughout the Eastern United States. Conclusions regarding the most effective section layouts, cut sequences, and support placements are reported. Field and laboratory tests of MRS's are also described.

"An analysis of coal fragmentation due to the action of a continuous miner is presented. Underground coal cutting by a drum-type continuous miner was simulated in the laboratory using a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS). The rotary coal cutter provided the versatility of varying the operating and in-situ parameters to provide information on the effects of generating 37 pm (0.0015 in) particles. In these tests, coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 50.8 x 35.6x 20.32 cm (20x 15x 8 in) were first subjected to confining pressures equivalent to in-situ conditions. The blocks were then cut by the rotary cutting head of the ARCCS, thus simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-situ and operating parameters a number of other parameters such as (1) penetration of bit into coal, (2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), (3) rotating velocity of' cutting head, and (4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. During the test, all the cut products were collected for size distribution analysis. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photographed and a velocity survey was conducted using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment the cutting paths of the bits in coal were photographed using a camera attached to an optical microscope.The results led to a better understanding of the mechanisms of the fragmentation process during coal cutting and the effect of operating parameters, in-situ conditions and coal type on the size distribution of the cut product:"

The Bureau of Mines has developed several techniques for draining methane from coalbeds in advance of mining. Drilling long horizontal holes from an underground location is one such technique, which was successfully demonstrated in the Pittsburgh and Sunnyside Coalbeds. The same technique has now been applied in the Mary Lee Coalbed at Jim Walter Resources, Inc. 's No. 4 Mine, Brookwood, Ala. , where two holes were drilled horizontally--one to a depth of 1,010 feet (308 m) and the other to 540 feet (165 m). The 1,010-foot (3083) hole proved successful in degasifying a portion of the Mary Lee Coalbed. The hole drained methane for 1 year, during which time the initial gas flow of 200,000 ft3/d (5,663 m3/d) declined to 65,000 ft3/d (1,840 m3/d). Total gas production was 40 x lo6 ft3 (1.1 x lo6 m3 ). The gas was of commercial quality, with 98 pct methane and a heat rating of 990 Btu/ft (36.89 Mj/m3). The methane emissions from the faces of the mine section advancing into the degasified zone were reduced by 60 pct. The 540-foot (165-m) hole was terminated prematurely when it became impossible to maintain an open hole. Because of caving, very little gas was drained through this hole.

THE expansion of the world economy which has been in process since 1958 continued in 1963 and both production and consumption of minerals rose. Gross national product (GNP) rose sharply in the United Kingdom and Japan, continued to expand in the United States and Canada, and maintained a high though slightly declining rate of growth in the European Economic Community (EEC) despite the appearance of excess capacity in certain lines and inflationary pressures in Italy and France. The steel and motor vehicle industries both increased output in North America, Western Europe, and Japan. The less developed areas benefited substantially from an improvement in their terms of trade, and their export earnings increased some 8 percent in 1963; although estimates of GNP for the majority of them are 110t yet available, it is probable that this increase was partly reflected in a substantial rise of GNP.2 In the United States the expansion was steady and extended through all sectors of the economy producing no distortions likely to disturb its continuing growth; at yearend with unemployment still at about 5.5 percent of the labor force and operating rates of industry estimated at about 87 percent of capacity, there was a substantial margin for further expansion. Though the balance of payments was still in heavy deficit for the year, in the last half it was moving rapidly toward equalibrium as net exports rose and capital outflows declined; prices were relatively stable, inventories increased only slightly and the activity of mineral-consuming industries remained high, steel output rising by 11 percent to highest level since 1957 and the auto industry output equalling the 1955 record.3
