"With a view of elucidating the role of glutathione (GSH) in the biochemical pathways of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis, we carried out electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopic investigations of the chromate-GSH redox reactions. The ESR measurements, employing spin-traps, provide evidence for the involvement of the glutathione (GS•) radical, as well as an isolable Cr(V)-glutathione intermediate. These results indicater a new mechanism for the reduction of chromate by GSH in cellular environment and help understand the (unexpected increase in Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks at elevated GSH levels.We report here indirect electron spin resonance (EGR evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl (GS) radical and direct evidence for a Cr(V) intermediate in the reactions of glutathione ¬(GSH) with chromate for the first time.. This work was undertaken to clarify the biochemical pathway of the reduction of chromate by GSH, since this reduction process is thought to be a critical step in the pathogenesis of the chromate-exposure related carcinogenesis. This follows from the literature reports which show that (a) Cr(VI)compounds have been proven to be carcinogens in laboratory animals as well as in human studies2-4, (b) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds are mutagenic 5-7, (c) Cr(VI) and not Cr(III) compounds can penetrate cell membranes 8.9 (d) the final state of Cr(VI) in cellular reductions is Cr(III)', (e) by itself chromate (or Cr(VI)) cannot be directly mutagenic since Cr(VI) is known not to interact with isolated DNA under physiological conditions 10, suggesting the significance of Cr(VI).reduction processes. One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be the GSH, both outside and inside the ce11s 11-13. Other evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity is seen from recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selenite increases the levels' of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand beaks 14, and thatsuch DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to their GSH content 15,16. These observations wereinterpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH, to some reactive intermediate is an important step in the chromatecarcinogenicity 15,16. "INTRODUCTION An electrolytic process for the preparation of metallic cobalt has been developed recently in the Bureau of Mines Experimental Station at Boulder City, Nev. Chemical analysis shows this cobalt to contain impurities in small percentages, chief of which is nickel. It is desirable to be able to determine these impurities spectrographically. This report is concerned with a procedure for the spectrochemical determination of nickel in cobalt.Previous spectrographic work on cobalt was done by Breckpot and Mevis,/ who used the method of homologous pairs of lines. However, it was felt that a more detailed investigation was needed, employing the method of internal standards.ACKNOWLEDGMENTWe are indebted to B. G. The demand on the nation's reserves of high-quality coals suitable for metallurgical purposes is resulting in the rapid depletion of some of the thicker coal beds. These beds are thick enough to permit the use of modern mechanized mining equipment. Many of the thin beds are not being mined at present. In limited areas where the coal is less than 36 inches thick some beds are mined by various conveyor methods. Usually, the room-and-pillar system or some modification of it is used, and often no attempt is made to extract pillars. Consequently, an appreciable quantity of a valuable resource is lost. Many steel companies and coal operators consider reserves of low-and medium-volatile coking coals to be critical, especially in areas where the thin beds are not being mined by modern mining methods. To improve recovery and to promote more-extensive mining in thin beds, methods and devices that are new to American coal mining but applicable to the mining of thin coal beds should be tried. As one of the functions of the Bituminous Coal Mining Section of the Bureau of Mines is to promote improved mining practices and efficiency in the interest of conservation, research in that line is necessary. In 1945 coal planers were observed in operation in Germany by a Bureau engineer member of Solid Fuels Mission to Germany. Planer designs and history of early developments and operations were published. In 1949 an improved planer was again studied by Bureau engineers, and its adaptability to certain conditions in the United States, especially thin beds of friable coal, was considered practicable. After the war the planer was improved, in design and for several years has been operating successfully in the Ruhr. Because of the conviction that the device would be successful, both from the standpoint of conservation and operational prodl1ctivity, under certain conditions in the United States, the Bureau of Mines, through the Bituminous Coal Mining Section, entered into a cooperative agreement with the Coal Division of Eastern Gas & Fuel Associates and Mining Progress, Inc. The purpose of the agreement was to conduct an experiment in modified longwall mining, using a new-type German-built coal plow or planer, known as the Loebbe Habel, supplied by Mining Progress, Inc. The experiment was made to determine if this type of mining equipment operated on a longwall face could be adapted to some of the thinner American coal beds. Such an experiment also would afford many opportunities to study the possibilities and principles of this type of equipment as well as the many factors involved in the mechanical mining of a longwall face.

Ten years ago we surveyed in "Uspekhi Khimii" the mechanism of the synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO and H2 (1).5 With new data obtained since then, mostly by Soviet researchers, our previous work (2), dealing with new forms and catalysts of the synthesis, is brought up to elate by reviewing research in this field. FORMATION OF CARBIDES The hypothesis that carbides are intermecliates in the synthesis assumes that carbon monoxide reacts with the metals of the eighth group and that this reaction is connected with the reversible reaction 2CO[=]C +CO2 (1) in a certain range of temperatures (3).

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study was conducted to model effects of coal properties on the potential for spontaneous heating in longwall gob (mined out) areas. A two longwall panel district using a bleeder ventilation system was simulated. The permeability and porosity profiles for the longwall gob were generated from a geotechnical model and were used as inputs for the three dimensional CFD modeling. The spontaneous heating is modeled as the low temperature oxidation of coal in the gob using kinetic data obtained from previous laboratory scale spontaneous combustion studies. Heat generated from coal oxidation is dissipated by convection and conduction, while oxygen and oxidation products are transported by convection and diffusion. Unsteady state simulations were conducted for three different US coals and simulation results were compared with some available test results. The effects of coal surface area and heat of reaction on the spontaneous heating process were also examined.

Because of leakage through and around permanent stoppings in underground mines, more air must be forced into a mine than would otherwise be required for ventilation. As power costs increase, costs resulting from air leakage add increasingly to the operating costs of mining. The Bureau of Mines evaluated four different stopping construction techniques based on the ideas that (1) airtightness could be enhanced by brushing rather than troweling on mortar sealant and that (2) modified mortars (mortars containing glass fibers and other additives for increased strength and adhesion) would improve sealing performance. Air leakage tests comparing conventional to modified stoppings were done when the stoppings were built, after 6 months, after 1 yr, and following simple maintenance. It was found that stoppings can be built and maintained better if-- The area where a stopping is to be built is properly prepared. Stoppings are constructed using the techniques devised by the Bureau. Stoppings are periodically examined for leaks. Stoppings found to be leaking, especially at the perimeters, are resealed.

Addition of an acid waste to an alkaline cyanide waste was investigated for five different combinations of electroplating wastes. At the optimum final pH values of the mixtures, metals and cyanides were almost quantita¬tively precipitated. No evolution of hydrogen cyanide was detected by a few additional processing steps, significant amounts of variable metals were recovered for recycling the waste-plus-Waste step is attractive because no reagents are required, metals arc concentrated, and a relatively harmless effluent that meets most water quality Standards for cyanide content is produced.

The Bureau of Mines conducted field investigations in two underground mines to determine the actual loads to which bearing plates were subjected when installed in conjunction with full-column resin-grouted bolts and the roof movements generated by the applied loads. Measured loads indicate that the bearing plate is an integral part of the support system. Vertical displacement gauges installed to monitor roof displacements in the test sites show that the highest degrees of loading occur in conjunction with the largest amounts of movement.

Techniques for recovering scandium from uranium plant iron sludges and from wolframite concentrates are described. The best procedure found comprised (1) dissolution with sulfuric acid, (2) preliminary concentration by solvent extraction with a primary alkyl amine, (3) further enrichment and purification by a combination of ion exchange, solvent extraction, chemical precipitation, and calcination. Recovery of scandium from these raw materials, which contained 0.058 and 0.14 percent scandium, ranged from 83 to 90 percent in products analyzing 99.6 to 99.9 percent scandium oxide.

The dynamic value varies with respect to both passage speed through the separating field and time of exposure in a preliminary treatment field . Tests on 16 minerals and solids have demonstrated that both of these factors affect different minerals in different ways .

In June 1942 , ' the Bureau of Mines selected the Zonia copper mine , near Kirkland , Yavapai County , Arizona , as a property meriting investigation in connection with its search for supplies of strategic minerals for use in the war . The following month , representatives of the War Production . Board conferred with Bureau officials and requested that the property be explored with the object of determining the tonnage and grade of ore that could be brought into production quickly and mined cheaply by open-pit methods . The work wa's designed to verify information submitted by the owners in support of an application for a Government loan. It was essential that the investigations be completed promptly , so that operations might be planned and copper produced for war needs . The investigations called for surface trenching , diamond drilling , and check sampling of underground workings . Unable to purchase equipment for trenching without considerable delay , the Bureau saved time by borrowing most of the necessary items from the Golden Queen mine of the Gold Fields Development Co. at Mohave , Calif. This company , whose engineers had sampled some of the old trenches , had a tentative agreement with the owners to operate and manage the Zonia mine in event the loan was granted . Additional equipment was borrowed from two Governmental agencies . The exploratory work , completed in 16 weeks , was carried on 7 days a week .

"The material known as coal has a highly variable composition. As a consequence, coals show a great variation in their physical and chemical properties as a function of coal rank. The situation is further complicated because the preparation engineer must deal with raw coal, as mined. This is an assemblage of coal, upwards of 30% mineral matter and, typically, several percent pyrite. The kind and amount of the mineral constituents is also highly variable from source to source. A knowledge of coal rank and source location, and the kind and amount of associated impurities, is the first step in evaluating the response of a raw coal to preparation procedures. The raw coal must first be characterized before information from one source can be extrapolated to that of another.INTRODUCTIONCoal is a black or brownish-black combustible solid, derived from a heterogeneous mixture of plant remains and associated mineral matter that have undergone chemical and physical metamorphic changes by biological and geological processes without free access to air. It is composed principally of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen with lesser amounts of nitrogen and sulfur. 'Its exact chemical and physical nature has remained poorly defined, because the term 'coal' refers to a broad range of coalified solids ranging in rank from anthracite to a variety of bituminous coals of differing volatile matter content, sub-bituminous coals, and ending with lignite and brown coals. The variation in chemical and physical properties through these ranks is massive. In summary, Luckie's (1988) assertion is apropos: ""There is no such thing as coal; there are coals"". The coal preparation engineer, and, most especially, those scientists and engineers from other disciplines wishing to work with coal, must constantly keep this admonition in mind because what is true for one coal seam is often not directly applicable to another."

This paper describes mining methods and practices of the Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Grant County, N. Mex. It is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. A similar program was conducted from 1928 to 1939, which helped to improve the efficiency of mining operations. The primary purpose of the program is to promote development and conservation of our mineral resources by disseminating technologic information on methods, practices, and related features in mining mineral deposits. It is expected that the program will: (1) Promote efficiency in operating mines; (2) assist operators and engineers in evaluating and developing new mineral deposits; (3) provide data for engineering curriculums in mining schools; and (4) furnish performance and cost data for revising engineering handbooks and for inclusion in engineering textbooks.

The petroleum-refining industry established a new record in fuel efficiency at refineries in 1936, when 597,000 B. t. u. of heat were required to refine a barrel of crude oil, compared with an average of 615,000 B. t. u. in 1935 (see fig. 1). The principal factor in the "indicated gain in fuel efficiency at refineries in 1936 was an increase in crude runs of 11 percent over 1935. A large part of the heat utilized at refineries is consumed elsewhere than under stills, or in ways quite independent of crude-oil distillation. In other words, as the operating ratio (crude runs divided by capacity) for refineries increases toward the maximum of 100 percent, the fuel requirements show progressively smaller increases and the average E. t. u. consumption per barrel of crude refined declines.

[Apparent progress in fuel economy at petroleum refineries, as measured by the average amount of .seat units required to refine a barrel of crude oil, received a set-back in 1935, when the average rose to 562,00 B. t. u., compared with 562,000 B.t.u. in 1937 (see fig. l). The primary factor in the rise in average heat requirement's per barrel of crude oil refined in 1938 wan the decline in total runs to Invariably the average requirement increases when crude ins to stills decline, and vice versa. In other words, annual gains in fuel efficiency at refineries arc masked by the degree to which the capacity is utilized. Additional crude runs give lower average e heat requirements in two ways - first, because they are mane with the c expenditure of comparatively small amounts of auxiliary heat, and, second, because the additional runs generally represent simple topping operations. In 1938 crude runs, to stills declined 1.6 percent (from 1,183,440,000 barrels in 1937 to 1,165,015,000 barrels in 1938), but the total heat consumption declined only 0.4 percent, or from 663,866 billion B. t. u. in 1777 to 660, 56 billion in 1938 .]

Since December 10, 1945, the Mount Weather Branch, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, has been maintaining detailed performance and cost records on the diamond coring bits used throughout the United States by the Bureau of Mince. Figure 1 is a copy of a typical master record sheet showing the scope and type of information recorded for each bit. It is the intention of the Bureau of Mines to issue analytical reports covering the effects of diamond size and quality on the cost of core drilling in different rocks as the information on a significant number of bits used in any one type of rock is accumulated. This report is the first of such a proposed series and is based on the diamond loss and bit costs incurred in the use of 539 AX bits in coring operations on 10 different projects involving 6,097 feet of drilling in gneiss. The 10 projects were located in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey (fig. 2). As a result of the information accumulated on the use of diamond-coring bits in drilling in gneiss, it has been found that the type of bit, the matrix, the percent of core recovered, and the size and quality of diamonds used have a definite effect on the cost of bits per foot drilled.

A study of certain gas making and fuel problems peculiar to the gas industry of California has been made by the Bureau of Mines. The work was done at the request of, and in cooperation with The California Gas Research Council 2, for the purpose of obtaining basic information on the gas-making fuels available to California, and their applicability to the present and future needs of the gas industry in that State. The data obtained have been applied in outlining a construction program, and indicate the possibilities in efficiently utilizing fuels in making gas by other than the oil-gas process. This paper presents an outline of the study and a summary of the principal results obtained, with some of the more important conclusions and recommendations based on this data. Gas is produced in California by processes which are both unique and different from those common to other parts of the United States. The bulk of the manufactured gas is made in and distributed from two main districts which are centers of population - namely, the Los Angeles district and the San Francisco Bay district. The gas manufactured in the Bay district is, almost exclusively oil-gas, whereas that produced in the southern part of the State, where natural gas is available, is mostly mixed natural gas and reformed-gas, but oil-gas is the chief product when the supply of natural gas is inadequate. Practically all of the gas companies are equipped with oil-gas generating apparatus, and anticipate using it in the future. As the continued use of the oil-gas process to the exclusion of all other processes, depends upon a continued supply of oil at a low cost, and the prospect of obtaining such low-priced oil in the future is somewhat uncertain, the questions have arisen: What will the future gas-making process or processes be? When will it be necessary to make plans for the installation of different gas generating equipment, and what will that equipment comprise?

The Malheur-Jordan Resource Areas (MJRA?s) is a tract of approximately 6.5 million acres of federal and non-federal land in the southeast corner of Oregon. This study evaluated the Resource Areas' economically recoverable mineral potential based on geological estimates provided in the USGS report (Smith, 1994). The mineral terranes are believed by geologists to contain undiscovered resources. The geological data is probabilistic; with estimates of the possible number of deposits and their grades and tonnages. Possible future development scenarios range from no development to numerous mines. Based on the analysis performed on these terranes, the most likely (in a statistical sense) future scenario for the resource areas would include the potential for two medium sized, predominately gold, mines. These would supply direct and indirect employment of up to about a thousand workers.
